Sébastien Casaert :
an entire life dedicated to the pigeon sport In the modern pigeon sport, Sébastien Casaert has been known for many years for his ability to adapt to his environment as well as for his pioneering vision of the pigeon sport. Throughout his career as a fancier, he has had the opportunity to be the caretaker of three differents lofts where he imposed his vision and his methods. The results were always astonishing as they all quickly climbed to the top. Everywhere he went, he saw and conquered. After several new starts, he finally settled in his own loft in Russeignies to concentrate on building his own family of pigeons.
B
orn on the 26th of March 1972 in Tournai (Belgium), Sébastien is the son of the famous pigeon champion Maurice Casaert & his wife Julienne Vandenbulcke. He is the second son of three sons, namely Maurice Jnr, Sebastien & Gregory, all of whom were infected by the pigeon bug. Born in the Flemish village of Wielsbeke, Maurice Snr moved with his parents from his native village to land in the area of St Léger. That’s where he met Julienne who would soon become his wife and the mother of his children. After they got married, they decided to stay in their adoptive village. A pigeon loft was quickly built and it was the beginning of the mythic pigeon career of Maurice Casaert. This was back in 1947, just after the second world war.
It was the time when pigeon fanciers only kept a few pigeons for themselves and where all the pigeons were housed in the same and only compartment, old pigeons and young birds together. The majority of the members were only racing the sprint races, while the long distance races were only to be raced by the biggest lofts, most of the time owned by wealthy people. It was in this post-war context that Maurice Casaert proved to be a very talented fancier. He started to build a very good reputation, a reputation that would soon have no borders and which will never be forgotten despite his death in May 2013. At the time, Maurice didn’t realise that this was only the beginning of a family story that we now recognise as one of the most mythic 5
& emblematic pigeon families of the modern pigeon sport. Maurice certainly had the necessary skills to get his pigeons to do well, but apparently he also did what he had to do to make fanciers out of his sons, three very talented pigeon managers. The patriarch probably never thought he would transmit his passion to his three sons and yet, the pigeon sport is deeply anchored in the genetic heritage of his family.

His second son, Sebastien, quickly distinguished himself from his two brothers. He was infected by the pigeon bug at a very young age and followed his father at the age of 8 during his free time.

Specialist of the young birds races for the partnership Hétru-Casaert (1995)
In this context, he is recruited a second time in 1995 by the french pigeon fancier Claude Hétru, owner of a breeding station and considered at the time as one of the biggest pigeon magnates in Europe. Hétru bought the best lines available at the time from the biggest names in Belgium and the Netherlands. These purchases are used to spearhead of his breeding station. But Hétru has another idea and has the burning ambition to test the results of his purchases himself. Sebastien perfectly fits his plans. He will again prove that he is the right person to lead the project for his new boss. During the season of 1995, the domination of the young team of the partnership Hétru-Casaert is impressive and each race is an unique occasion to show the world the quality of their pigeons. However, it looks more like a firing squad for their opponents. This partnership will only last for one season.
Manager of the Golden Ladies in Otegem (1996-1998)
At the head of one of the best Belgian lofts of the 90’s, Sylvère Toye also heard about the talent of this young phenomenon and decided also to approach him. Toye was at the owner of several butcheries but had just sold them. He had then more free time to spend in his pigeon lofts but he really wanted
to do the opposite. Toye wanted to enjoy his hobby more casually. At the time, his colony was at the top and he wanted somebody who was able to maintain it at the same level or, why not, try to do better. After he bought the Invincible Montauban, the national winner of the very hard Montauban race in 1992 won by the Casaert family (the first of the six national victories for Maurice), Toye has good contacts with the whole family. He saw the level of skill of Sebastien and decided to hire him just before the season of 1996. His tasks were to manage the entire racing team and especially a team of hens raced on the widowhood system. Toye was one of the very first to race the hens. Indeed nobody was, at the time, aware of what a hen was able to accomplish. But the master is nobody else than Sebastien and for the umpteenth time, he will prove to the world that Toye was right when he decided to hire him. From the start at the head of the Toye colony in 1996, Sebastien won 16 first prizes. In 1997, he did even doing better as the Toye colony took 22 victories. But together, they also won the 2nd national Argenton against 15,453 young pigeons as well as the 2nd national Périgueux from 5,594 pigeons. It was however, a small taste of what was going to happen during the next few seasons. Indeed, Sebastien helped the Toye colony, which was then racing at its highest level, to achieve domination in the Belgian pigeon sport. In 1998, the first national race of the season, Bourges, was a veritable demonstration of the abilities of Casaert.
The Golden Ladies team simplys mashed up the race achieving one of the very best performance from that time. In fact, it was a never before seen domination of a race. Against the 3,397 hens at the national level, the Toye team won : 1, 3, 5, 8, 9, 13, 15, 18, 26, 27, 36, 37, … At the end of the season, the loft had taken 5 provincial victories. No comment! One year later, the same racepoint, let’s take the same and start again. Against the 4,202 hens at the national the Toye colony achieved the following performance : 1, 12, 31, 47, 50, 57, 58, 63, 66, 73, 75, 78, 80, 97, … But the Toye colony was also to be seen at end of the season leading the national race of La Souterraine against 1,334 old pigeons. The balance of the season 1998 was simply unbelievable : five provincial victories as well as numerous national top 100 positions! Sébastien concluded his experience at the Toye loft in the most beautiful way possible. Because the season 1998 was his last as a caretaker at Toye’s loft. Tired of the distance between his home and the 9

After he successfuly obtained the maximum potential from the pigeons that were put at his disposal and after he had led the colony to its bestever level, it was simply the right moment to call it quits. He left but stayed on good terms with Sylvère who became a friend for life. Moreover, Sebastien has now a very precise idea in his head…

To race on his own : St Léger chapter (2000-2007)
After he became the father of his own child, Hugo (born in 1998), Sebastien finally decided to stay in his native village, St Léger. Everybody was now aware of what he was able to do with his pigeons. Sebastien was now truly living for his hobby and he had the ambition to get his own place amongst the national elite. He built new pigeon lofts at his new propriety and decided to race under the name Casaert-Sénéchal, testifying at the same time his respect to François Sénéchal,
one through whom all this had happened. His new pigeon lofts quickly housed pigeons from the best colonies of Belgium : Georges Bolle (line of the Generaal), Eric Limbourg (line of the Blue Slimmen), Gaby Vandenabeele (lines of the Kolonel and of the Wittenbuik) and, of course, pigeons from the colony of his father and his brother, Maurice & Grégory Casaert (lines of the Nasdaq and of the Limoges King). This golden basis would help him to his first success. From 2000 until 2004, he was exclusively racing the young bird competition, mostly
because of his professional career. Since the end of the 1999, he had been working in the information world, a job he would leave in 2006. During this four year period, Sebastien became one of the best specialists of Belgium in the young bird competition, the season 2003 being probably the best of all. He always left his mark on the races where he entered his pigeons thanks to a characteristic that will probably never cease to pursue him : he crushed the opposition. In fact, its not uncommon to see him winning
the first 10-15 prizes of a race, thanks to his impressive series of clockings. Most of the times, the prize percentage and the amount of prize per 10 was bordering on excellence as well. In fact, over the years : he became the reference loft of the young birds competition, the best from the south side of Belgium. He also started to challenge his father ,Maurice as well. But he quickly came to the conclusion that stopping his pigeons after their young bird year was a real mess. That’s why he decided to build a yearling team to enter the competition during the season 2005. Raced on widowhood, his small team, composed of 16 racing cocks and 8 racing hens, achieved great performances and Sebastien ended in 10th place in the yearling national championship. It was the end of the young birds exclusivity. He then decided to adapt his professional lift to suit his hobby, and not anymore the opposite. Sebastien left his job in the information world and became a delivery driver for a private society. He was getting up early each day and returning home at 15 o’clock, a perfect situation to take care of his pigeons. He could also count on the precious help of his wife, Anne, who took care of the pigeons in the morning, while his son, Hugo, was also starting to get interested in the pigeon sport.
The season 2006

of the strongest loft in the country for the coming years. In 1. National Champion Middle Distance Youngsters KBDB ‘07 2006, while the 6. Highlights St Léger
By the way, it might be very interesting to know that the only fancier who was able to beat him that day was his father Maurice. At the time, the pigeon journalist Jean-Philippe Delmarle wrote on his report: ‘We never saw the same family leave as much its brilliance on a such 11
In 2007, he added another golden reference to his name, winning at the same time his first title of national champion : 1st National Champion Small Middle Distance Young Birds KBDB. Once again, history repeats herself : at the top of his game, Sebastien decided to finish
the chapter of St Léger. With his wife Anne, he wanted to build a new house and they both decided to sell their house in St Léger. Sebastien turned the final page to start a new chapter. He would soon understand that it would be the most beautiful of his whole career…
Two unique consecrations in Russeignies (2008-2014)
Being a very passionated fancier, Sebastien made sure that his new lofts would be finished before the house. It’s a common point for most fanciers. During the construction, he lived in a house in Pecq. However, as his first loft is finished, he placed the young birds born in 2008 in their new sanctuary. The first results won in his new loft are of course similar from those won in St Léger. Splendid fact : the pigeon master from Russeignies was now managing, with his old birds and his yearlings, the same series of arrivals he managed to achieve when he was exclusively racing his youngsters. And he is the only one to do it. Here is a small overview of the first results won in 2009 : Etampes – 688 yearlings : 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16, 18, 19, 21, 29, 33, 35, … (37/43) Bourges Nat. – 22,499 yearlings : 7, 8, 16, 37, 75, 122, 137, 162, 243, 309, … (37/48) Issoudun Iprov. – 5,848 yearlings : 25, 27, 32, 38, 39, 44, 46, 49, 52, 56, 65, 86, 87, 93,... (37/48)
Châteauroux S-Nat. – 7,871 yearlings : 3, 6, 7, 20, 23, 34, 35, 55, 58, 71, 75, 94, 113, 138, 143, 144, 145, … (40/64) When you take a look at these results, you can only be impressed. Who would not? Eager to continue, Sebastien analyzed the results and one name often came to his mind in 2009 : a certain Gaston Van de Wouver. A few weeks later, he went to Berlaar to buy some pigeons. Less than two years later, he would understand it was the best deal of his life. In addition, did some exchanges with his friend Joost De Smeyter-Restiaen. The season 2010 was to be at the same level as the previous seasons. At the end of the campaign of 2010, the loft had 17 different titles obtained in various championships. But what can we say about the next year! The 2011 season started on a impressive rythm. Almost unbeaten after the first races of the season, Sebastien managed to win another impressive victory in the interprovincial race from Vierzon as he won the laurels against the 6,659 yearlings entered in the race (highest speed of the 17,021 pigeons), thanks to Amalia. A few months later, this hen was to be crowned as National Ace Pigeon Great Middle Distance KBDB, one of the most prestigious awards of the Belgian pigeon sport. Her mother was Palme d’Or, a hen purchased two years before after he visited Gaston Van de Wouver. Palme d’Or is a granddaughter of the legendary Kaasboer, the basis pigeon of Van de Wouver. 13
2013, between laughter and tears
This unique achievement darkened after Hugo was diagnosed a brain tumor early in 2013. It was the darkest days of the family. But the Casaerts decided to cope and to stick together. The numerous hours spent in the loft were now spent on a daily path to the hospital. In such a situation, the pigeons were of course put in second place. But several weeks later, fate stroke again. This time, Maurice, the patriarch of the family, whose health had strongly declined during the last few weeks, passed away at the age of 81. In these hard times, Sebastien made his best to achieve a decent season in 2013. He didnt have enough time during the 24 hours of a day to do everything he wanted to do. But he could count on the unwavering support of his family who helped him greatly. He also received excellent help from his friend Bernard Henry who acted as the care taker of the loft and who is always ready to help in case of need. At the end, the final result is simply incredible : two years after his first title of National Ace Pigeon won by Amalia, it is the turn of Nikolaas to achieve the same performance : he is crowned as National Ace Pigeon Great Middle Distance Old Pigeons KBDB! Winning this title for the second time in a period of only three years is an exceptionnal fact. But it’s simply unthinkable when you know that both ace pigeons were bred by the same mother! That’s why Palme d’Or can be truly considered as one of the best breeding hens of the entire history of the pigeon sport worldwide.
Winning two national titles of ace pigeons in three years is an incredible fact. But finding the same mother at the basis of these two unique performance is a potentialy unequalled fact.
A very strong philosophy
When you read about his personnal story, something directly comes to your mind : his will to win. Since his childhood, Sebastien has been natural born winner spurred on by his thirst to win and the fact he has always loved to enter in competitions. With these characteristics, the practice of the pigeon sport perfectly suited to his temperament and his winning mentality. We wanted to use his words to illustrate this personnal characteristic: ‘’the pigeon sport is for me very exciting and motivating. If you want to progress, you gotta be constantly questioning.’’ The explanation of his passion has to be found
in such words. That’s why he wakes up each morning with the focus to give the best of himself,to make sure he obtains the maximum out of his pigeons. In addition, a constant questioning is also a characteristic fact similar to great pigeon champions. Sebastien is no exception. And if you want to know more about the racing management, his philosophy is quite simple. Of course, you need to race with the best pigeons possible and it’s only after having made an analysis of the results that you will be able to get your own idea about the name of the fancier you should visit. It was after this personnal analysis that Sebastien found out he should pay a visit to Gaston Van de Wouver. The rest of the story, everybody knows. Afterwards, concerning the ‘game’ aspect,
14
the method is also really simple : to breed-to race-to select. And it will be only after hard work for several years that you will be able to shine in your discipline. Sebastien Casaert is the best example.
A well deserved break
The whole colony, except the biggest part of the young birds born in 2014, will be auctioned during this winter. This decision probably surprised several people but it has been carefully considered. If he successfully managed to reach this level, Sebastien only owe it to his hard work over 365 days a year. Over the last few months, the Casaert family has lived some very intensive emotional moments, both negative and positive. Sebastien admits he is physically and mentally tired and he wants to recover a bit. That’s the main reason behind his decision to sell.

Palme d’Or BE09-6111726 Mother to Nikolaas Mother to Amalia
During the season 2009, Sébastien was really impressed of the results won by Gaston Van de Wouver. Before the last national race of the racing calendar, Guéret, Gaston achieved a spectacular result on Argenton & La Souterraine. Sébastien noticed it and contacted him in the morning of Guéret to know if it was possible to buy some pigeons, wishing him at the same time good luck for the race. A few hours later, Gaston won the national victory against 14,245 young birds. During the next week, Sébastien went in Berlaar to see the pigeons for sale and came back with a.o. Palme d’Or. «She was a few months older than the others and she was simply exceptionnal when i handled her. I had a great feeling and brought her back to Russeignies. Despite the fact i was convinced she would breed me super pigeons, i never thought it would be that much. She totally deserves her title of ‘Amazing mother’.»

1. Nat Ace Great Middle Distance KBDB 2011 Amalia*
During the struggle that would lead her to the title of national ace pigeon in 2011, Amalia achieved some great performances. But the role of her manager was also important. Indeed, Sebastien managed to have her in top condition from the very first race of the calendar until the very last. On the 21st of May, Amalia won the 1st interprovincial Vierzon against 6,659 yearlings. It was the first prize she won for her national title. The fourth ,and last one, was won more than three months later, on the 27th of August from La Souterraine.

Nikolaas
Despite his very impressive career, Sebastien never managed to clock one of his big money pigeons ahead at the national level. But it was obvious that it would happen some day. Nikolaas managed to do it in 2013 in the La Souterraine national race. Sebastien was very confindent on him after he saw the weather forecast : hot and strong head wind. He managed to win the interprovincial victory and ended in 9th place of the national result. That’s why Nikolaas has always been a very special pigeon to Sebastien.

Montluçon 2013 The local result of this race held back in 2013 is the best example that the ace pigeon blood will help you easily to win great performances. Against the 250 old pigeons sent in the club result of this national race, the Casaert-Sénéchal colony managed to win a hat-trick! The victory was won by the future national ace pigeon, Nikolaas, while the second place was to be given to his nestbrother, Maurice. Finally, a son of Geert (the father of Amalia, national ace pigeon in 2011) added the third place to his performance list. Easy game…

Stan - World Class Breeder Stan
BE04-9134039
BE01-2342676 Spencer – E. Limbourg
Born in 2004, the most beautiful chapters of Stan’s stories were however written from 2006 and especially the 10th of June 2006 during the semi-national race of Châteauroux. That day, this pigeon who would soon become a genious breeder won the 2nd semi-national against 11,526 old pigeons after a very hard race. Only a pigeon raced by his father Maurice was able to beat him. But an incredible fact is that his son, a yearling christened Slim, did better as he won the semi-national palm against 7,495 pigeons, reaching at the same time the highest speed from the 19,021 pigeons basketed for the race. Sébastien directly noticed his breeding potential and decided to place him straight in the breeding loft. Stan quickly became the basis pigeon of this young colony at the time. The rest of the story is known, with an exceptionnal list of victories and early prizes won at each level and at all distances by his descendants.

Nasdaq 1st National Souillac Casaert M&G Maurice Casaert & Nasdaq
Born in 1998, the famous Nasdaq gets his place in the hall of fame in 2000 after he took the victory in the national race from Souillac against 7,154 pigeons, a very hard race with a strong head wind and heat. Born out of the Limoges King (2 x top 10 national Limoges) paired to Arcadia (a daughter of the basis pair of the loft in the ‘90s), this pigeon was placed in the breeding loft after his victory and the least we can say is that he performed some miracles. Indeed, the Nasdaq line dominated the Belgian pigeon sport for the first years of the new millenium. The fact that they won so many victories in various lofts is the best proof of this. Some big names directly understood it and introduced this winner’s blood into their stock. These trendsetters of the pigeon sport made this line famous in every corner of the world. Now, 14 years after his national victory, his superior genes are still highly researched. The Nasdaq family can be seen as the ultimate gift from Maurice Casaert, a gift he offered of course to his sons and Sebastien took a lot of benefit from it.

laying a key role on the belgian pigeon map for many years now, its quite normal that fanciers came from all over the world to purchase descendants of the best lines. They managed to achieve remarkable performances everywhere, winning many victories and ace pigeon titles up until the national level and leading their new owner to a supreme level of racing. However, we only listed here the most regular of them, those who won great results for many years with the Casaert-Sénéchal pigeons. And being clear and concise, we limited this list to the main area of their fame: Belgium. They have a common link: these pigeons are born to win.
Gaie Brothers (La Bouverie, BE) Gaston & Jean Gaie are racing with great success with the pigeons from the late Maurice Casaert since many years. In 2010, they wanted to introduce new blood in their stock and decided then to pay a visit to his prodigious son. ‘We wanted to stay as close as possible to our basic strain while introducing some fresh blood. The crossings done by Sebastien were an amazing job and that’s why our decision was quickly made.’ They paid him a visit and came back home with several couples of eggs destined to be paired to each other the next year. In 2011, two eggs obtainted at Casaert-Sénéchal became parents of ‘Loulou’. The next year, this pigeon was simply one of the best yearlings of Belgium winning : 1. Nat. Bourges 16,442 p. 1. La Ferté 529 p. 1. Soissons 469 p.
Frédéric Beukenne (Bruyelle, BE) In 2008, Frédéric received a hen from Sebastien to couple her with his ‘Gaby’, freshly crowned as 1st Nat Ace Middle Distance KBDB. The ‘Son Gaby 093’ was bred out of this pair and, coupled later on the ‘white pen 095’, he will form an incredible breeding pair that will lead the Beukenne loft to sensational successes. The children bred out of this pair won in the national races the following results : 1. Nat. Zone Bourges ’12 5,193 p. 2. Nat. 16,859 p. 1. Prov. Bourges ‘13 2,379 p. 3. Prov. Vierzon ‘12 1,010 p. 5. Carlos & Xavier Vandemeulebroecke (St Léger, BE) Carlos obtained his first Casaert-Sénéchal pigeons thanks to his son, Xavier, who often helped Sebastien in his own lofts. At the time, both fanciers were close neighboors, living both in St Léger. The basis hen of the Vandemeulebroecke loft, ‘Paris’, was bred in the lofts of Sebastien, out of his first successful breeding lines. She became mother of ‘Topaze’, 3rd national Bourges against 19,024 old pigeons in ’08 before she became greatmother of ‘Chelsea’, 2nd national Narbonne against 7,027 yearlings in ’11. ‘Paris’ is also great-grandmother of ‘Xavi’, 3rd best belgian long distance pigeon on 4 long distance races in 2013 winning at the same time 5x top 3 provincial in his whole career! The nestbrother of ‘Paris’, 76
‘Farenheit’, became also father of ‘Poséidon’, a pigeon who won no less than 5 national top 100 positions in his whole career! But Carlos Vandemeulebroeck was also very successful with the descendants of Staaf, grandfather of two provincial victories for their own count, being the 1st provincial Poitiers against 935 pigeons and the 1st interprovincial Agen against 1,231 pigeons. Best results won by the Casaert-Sénéchal descendants : 1. Iprov. Bourges ’08 2,339 p. 1. Prov. Argenton ’12 1,864 p. 1. Iprov. Limoges ’14 1,851 p. 1. Prov. Brive ’09 1,726 p. 1. Iprov. Agen ’14 1,231 p. 1. Prov. Cahors ’12 942 p. 1. Prov. Poitiers ’14 930 p.
François Michaux (Mariembourg, BE) In 2011, François bought a young cock from Sebastien, the nesbrother of a hen that will be soon christened as ‘Bijou’, an excellent racing hen who became mother of ‘Kate’, both being racing stars of the Casaert-Sénéchal racing team. This cock, christened ‘Hugo’, became one of the best racers of the Michaux loft thanks to some astonishing performances : 1. Gien 1,631 p. 1. Nanteuil 323 p. 1. Bourges 125 p. 22. Nat. When you give good pigeons to a skilled fancier, the results are never too far. The Pierre colony from Pecrot is the best example of this. As great friends of the family, Roger and his son David had the opportunity to choose several couples of eggs from the racing team before the beginning of the season 2014. The main goal was to test as quick as possible these new reinforcements on the races. And the results were directly good as most of the pigeons who came out of the eggs became pigeons with a high potential. The season came to an end with a wonderfull performance as the father and son combination won the 8th national Guéret against 16,619 youngsters with a direct CasaertSénéchal pigeon. This hen was bred out from a son of ‘Ludo’ coupled on a niece from ‘Palme d’Or’. Roger & David Pierre also ended at the 2nd place of the General Championship KBDB. The 4 prizes that were needed to be won with the youngsters were all won by three different pigeons coming all from Casaert-Sénéchal! The Russeignies stock made a great entrance in the racing team from Pecrot!
