the fog series artist statement My work honors the creative process, focusing on the craft and physicality of production. I explore space and form through gestural, intuitive mark-making which affirms the tactile manipulation of the materials. Every layer, texture, and mark attests to the meaningful equality of the process of creation and the final work itself. I cherish the quiet, reflective moments found in the folds of our lives, almost undetected as we hurry through. These moments hold the most sincerity in life and greatly influence me. In our natural environment I find a sense of peace and serenity often absent from the everyday. My intention is to bring about one of these subtle pauses in which I can share this sensibility for nature. This series is inspired by fog and mist and its ability to alter landscape in a tangible manner- settling in, creating a veil of tiny water droplets felt on skin and noticed collecting on surfaces. My interest in the physicality of paint correlates with my attraction to mist. Unlike light, wind, or temperature, mist is a tactile cloud descended from the sky- nature’s way of painting something new and permeating into the landscape. I want to capture the evanescent quality of fog in nature while maintaining the perception of paint on canvas- to not forget that it is paint on canvas, paying tribute to both phenomena at once.
