people in all walks of life including leaders, teachers, sales people, managers and parents.
Nancy is one of the pioneers in the field of energy healing, with over 35 years’ experience, studying and using a combination of modalities that ranged from Polarity Therapy to Bio-Dynamics, Archetypal Astrology, Intuitive Skill Development, Meditation and much more. After years of teaching energy workers and others she developed Realizing Your Sublime Energies (RYSE) to help healers learn to deal with the complex dynamics of
energy transference. The work proved to be valuable not only to healers in all modalities but
The breakthrough quality of RYSE was the understanding that people can consciously manipulate their energy fields and the development of tools to help them learn to take full mastery of their energy. Where yoga, meditation and other disciplines were helpful in giving people ways of affecting their energy indirectly, RYSE goes directly to how you can clear and maintain your energy system to reach your optimal performance and sustain your perfect balance.
START ON YOUR PATH TO A NEW CAREER NOW! IT’S ALL ABOUT ENERGY!
Polarity Therapy teaches you how to create the optimal environment for healing to occur naturally. Underlying everything we do is Energy. Having your energy system cleared and aligned changes everything. That’s why knowing how to clear your own energy as well as how to help others to clear themselves is at the core of any successful healing practice.
TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE
EXPERIENCE AND WISDOM ARE ESSENTIAL
Learning energy work is extremely powerful when properly taught by experienced professionals who have a solid foundation in the science and application of energy work. Polarity therapy is a well-defined, structured and integrated system for working with energy that unlocks the body’s natural healing ability.
If you want to transform your life and career or take your current healing work to a higher level, learning Polarity Therapy and RYSE are an important next step.

Dearest Readers, Have you ever felt something in your gut? Have you ever heard that little voice inside your head, guiding you? According to the old adage, you should “always trust your intuition.” Well, learning to trust this instinct may not always be as easy as you think! Outside influences and the pressures that come from others can often pull you away from your true instinct. Constantly hearing "do it this way" or "most people would" or, "what are you, crazy?" can make listening to that inner voice difficult. The secret is to listen to the messages your body gives you and to tap into your innate ability to go deep within yourself. There come many instances in our lives where we must make difficult decisions. One of the most difficult can be the moment when you’re faced with the decision of choosing medical care, whether it be for ourselves or for a loved one. We’ve all been there. And that is the time to trust your intuition. When it comes to our health, or the health of those we love, there’s nothing more important than being an advocate for good health. Being your own advocate is pivotal in living a healthier life. But it’s not always easy. The key is to start planning now. If you are diagnosed with a serious illness, you can become inundated with an avalanche of information regarding treatment options, choosing a medical team, etc., which can become overwhelming. Trusting your instincts can be so important when making decisions. Believe me, I know this firsthand. In November of 2012, I was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease, and I went from feeling like Wonder Woman to feeling like a 90-yearold almost in the blink of an eye. But in the midst of the chaos, I learned something important. My intuition was telling me that there was a reason for this, that the Lyme disease was something that I needed in my life at that time for some yet-to-beunderstood reason. I didn’t know yet how or why, but I knew that if I trusted my gut, I’d get my answer. That answer came nine months later. Having felt a pain under my arm, I had myself checked, and it was discovered that I had non-invasive breast cancer. I was told that it was found early enough, thanks to me having Lyme disease. I was so in-tune with taking care of my body to help treat the Lyme disease, that a small pain, which I probably would’ve otherwise ignored, would’ve gotten much worse. With my surgery now behind me and as I am on my path to healing, I believe everything happens for a reason. And I’ve learned that listening to that inner voice can be crucial. So don’t ignore it. Thank you all so much for your continued support of our publication and of me, your wellness advocate! My passion to bring Healthy Living Magazine to you is stronger than ever.

LYME DISEASE
Lyme Disease Survivor calls for an Immediate and Compassionate End to an “ Epidemic of Our Time”
by Katina Makris
Every year, tens of thousands of Americans contract a disease that can devastate their brains, debilitate their central and autonomic nervous systems, and weaken many other organ systems including musculo-skeletal, digestive, respiratory, and more. Oftentimes victims suffer for years without an accurate diagnosis, their bodies ravaged—without any sign of relief. The terrible effects of this tickborne disease are exceeded only by the staggering lack of awareness and training in the medical community. Below are facts regarding Lyme disease: Lyme Disease is the most commonly reported vector-borne illness in the USA. •
In 2009, according to the CDC, nearly 30,000 new cases of Lyme disease were reported. •
30,000 new Lyme cases amounts to: 2,500 cases per month 82 cases per day … more than 3 new cases per hour ~since this number represents only verified cases, the CDC estimates that the number of actual cases could be ten times as high, or about 300,000 new sufferers each year. •
Official infection rates in New England states are currently most alarming: as high as 111 out of every 100,000 people. •
3
Lyme disease is indeed an exploding epidemic, having eclipsed HIV as the fastest growing infectious illness in the USA. Already affecting the entire eastern US (as well as the west coast and the Ohio river valley) Lyme is infecting people everywhere due to the migration patterns of carrier birds and mild winters, allowing ticks to ‘winter over’ and reproduce readily. •
• Yet, only a tiny percentage of doctors diagnose acute and chronic Lyme disease—in some New England states, according the Journal of Pediatrics, only about 2% of Lyme cases are actually detected. "Enough is enough," say Katina Makris a Classical Homeopath host of weekly talk show "Lyme Light Radio" and author, promoting Lyme disease awareness nationally. Katina struggled for five years with a misdiagnosed case of Lyme disease before forging her own path to wellness by combining the best of Western and Complementary Alternative Medicine (CAM). Katina reports: ”Our present-day health care system has proven itself ill equipped to diagnose—much less cure—the tens of thousands of Americans who suffer from this devastating disease. It's time for a paradigm shift”, she says, “and that means educating patients, doctors, and those holding the purse strings alike.”

& How To Reverse It
Autoimmune conditions affect over 50 million Americans, a large percentage of whom are women. In fact, I myself had an autoimmune condition called Grave's disease. Autoimmune diseases are considered a top 10 leading cause of death in women under the age of 65. They come in many different varieties, including rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, and more, and can cause many different types of symptoms all over the body that range from mild to severe in nature. But what are they, what causes them, and how can they be treated? What are autoimmune diseases? Although there are many different types of autoimmune diseases and they can affect many different organs, at their core they are all similar in that they are an immune response caused by systemic inflammation that leads your body to attack itself. Your immune system has a very sophisticated system for keeping you safe that leads it to identify all of the foreign substances that enter your body or that you come into contact with. If your immune system deems
anything dangerous, it will produce antibodies to ward off the harmful intruders. Autoimmune diseases are born when your body is working hard to defend itself against something potentially dangerous, such as an allergen, a toxin, an infection, or even a food, and it fails to differentiate between the intruder and parts of your own body. Mistaking certain types of tissues
"They come in many different varieties, including rheumatoid arthritis, type I diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus, psoriasis, multiple sclerosis, and more." for harmful substances, your body turns these antibodies against itself, wreaking havoc on your organs. What causes autoimmune diseases? There are many underlying factors that can cause people to develop an autoimmune condition. There is certainly an underlying genetic component. However, whether these
genes get expressed or turned on is actually caused by a host of other factors, such as toxins from heavy metals like mercury or mycotoxins from molds, infections like Candida, Epstein-Barr and the herpes simplex virus, and most significantly, chronic inflammation tied to food sensitivities — particularly gluten intolerance. There is a significant link between autoimmune diseases and gluten intolerance. 10 Signs You May Have an Autoimmune Disease If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, especially a combination of several of them, you may have an autoimmune disease. 1. Joint pain, muscle pain or weakness or a tremor 2. Weight loss, insomnia, heat intolerance or rapid heartbeat 3. Recurrent rashes or hives, sunsensitivity, a butterfly-shaped rash across your nose and cheeks. 4. Difficulty concentrating or focusing continued on page 6 . . .
Garlic to Aid Illness!
Garlic vinegar. Infuse garlic in vinegar, and it’s a great way to get the raw qualities of garlic. Eat the vinegar straight when ill or day-to-day, use it in salad dressings or recipes that call for vinegar.
In about a half hour, rub the oil on your feet. You can do this on your kids as well when they have a bad cough or they have a chest cold. You can also place garlic pieces between your toes (but not for kids).
Garlic your feet. Yes, you read right. Here’s what to do: crush a few garlic cloves, put them in a little jar or bowl, and cover it in olive oil.
Put your socks on for the night and go to sleep. When you wake up, you will have garlic breath, so you know it works! No kidding! Garlic enters your

Identifying which autoimmune disease is affecting you can be a difficult process. Symptoms may be vague, and autoimmune diseases can present themselves in so many different ways, affecting the thyroid, the brain, the skin, or other organs. Working closely with a functional medicine physician to review your family medical history, understanding your risk factors for infections, food sensitivities and toxins, as well as listening to you closely to discover how all of your symptoms are related is an essential part of getting well. A functional medicine physician will help to narrow down which labs they recommend in order to help find the root cause of your condition.

Probiotics
are Not Just for
by Leanne J. Sotir
Digestive Disorders
Most people are familiar with bacteria, but it is usually associated with something negative. Our digestive tract contains large amounts of something called good bacteria. This beneficial bacteria keeps the bad bacteria such as viruses, fungi and other foreign pathogenic microbes from causing problems with our health. This healthy bacterium is also used to manufacture B and K vitamins, increase absorption of nutrients from our foods, as well as manufacture neurotransmitters that are needed for healthy brain function. If we cannot process nutrients from our food, our health can suffer greatly, causing problems with digestion, mental health and immunity. The Health of our digestive tract is important because 70% of our immune system is in or around our digestive tract. Keeping a healthy balance of good bacteria in the gut is necessary for disease prevention. Probiotics are a form of good bacteria that can be purchased in supplement form. The two most researched forms of beneficial bacteria are lactobacilli, found mainly in the small intestine, and bifidobacteria, found mainly in the large intestine (colon). These strains are the most abundant forms found in the intestines. Supplementing with probiotics will help the body replenish the good bacteria that is lost when we consume a poor diet or when we take certain medications. Today even mainstream medicine is open to the concept of probiotic therapy for many gastrointestinal problems. Most people would never think that symptoms and conditions such as allergies, skin
8
conditions, arthritis, depression, or even a more serious condition such as cancer could be helped by replenishing the good bacteria in our digestive tract. Extensive research has been done using probiotics showing beneficial results with various gastrointestinal issues. However, some new research has emerged showing that the integrity of the digestive tract can improve conditions that affect the immune system as well. Current data suggests that probiotics may be useful in controlling inflammatory diseases and autoimmune conditions, treating various allergies, preventing cancer, and stimulating the immune system. One of the ways this healthy gut bacteria enhances immune function is by increasing the body’s number of immune system cells. Not all probiotics contain enough good bacteria to replenish the healthy flora in the gut. Be sure to choose a high quality one that contains at least 50 billion microorganisms. Whether someone suffers from a mild digestive issue or a more serious medical
condition, adhering to a whole food diet and adding a probiotic to their daily regimen is a great start. This is a positive step forward to improving digestion as well as immunity. and Changing Moods of Fall and Winter
by Juli Ford
As the days grow shorter and the hours of sunlight diminish, it can be frustrating to say good bye to the higher energy levels and longer, more productive days of summer. I know I find myself feeling like I’m ready to call it a day and crawl into my PJs as soon as darkness falls (at 5 o’clock!). And, for some of us, the reduction in sunlight leads not just to lazier evenings and tighter jeans but to more serious mood changes. So how can we enjoy the falling leaves, crackling fires and softly falling snow while still feeling like getting out of bed every day?
rest. What can you do to embrace this time? Plan less, daydream more, lighten your schedule. Say "no" more often. Expect less of yourself. Really. A lot less. When we stop fighting against the natural pull to turn inward, sometimes we find that instead of feeling resistance to a darker mood and darker days, we find a welcome space of fertile ground for honoring our inner world and tending our spirit.
"Plan less, daydream more, lighten your schedule. "
First, please get your Vitamin D levels checked. You can ask your doctor to do this for you or order a kit and test yourself at CanaryClub.org. There are differing opinions on what a healthy Vitamin D level should be but most health professionals will agree that your levels should be 30 ng/ mL or higher for optimum health. I tested mine last December and found mine was 21! Once I got my levels up with a Vitamin D supplement, I felt my energy lift dramatically and my vitality return quickly (in less than 2 weeks). Next, consider not fighting against the seasonal shifts. If your seasonal mood swings are severe, please be sure to seek professional help. But if your struggle with the changing days is milder, consider taking a radical approach. Don’t fight it. The shift into fall and winter is a natural time of turning inward. A quieter time for introspection and

This was stress. my little girl truth at the time and Do you tell the truth in your life? I the only place I felt mean really tell the I could be heard was truth? To yourself, to in a journal. Since the people you love? that time I have sung Do you find yourself and written songs afraid to speak up " . . . encourage others as a way of sharing in situations or are around you to sing." truth, empowering you the one always others, and healing interrupting others, myself. These songs, both the writing insisting you are right? Both of these of them and the singing, is a part of scenarios are signs of imbalance in the how I believe I keep myself well and throat chakra. When our throat chakra happy. The throat chakra, also know is vibrating in wellness, we can listen as Visudhha, is said to be a place of and express with equal joy, grace and communication. When I was singing power. at Wanderlust in VT this past June, Singing and allowing sound to move I was lucky to take a workshop with through your body helps to open and Suzanne Sterling called “Sing Yourself balance not just the throat chakra, but Awake.” In this workshop, she talked all chakras. As you may know if one about trauma and how many of us place in your body feels out of sorts, as children, because of experiences it can effect the whole. I often feel in our communities or families, felt the throat as the bridge between heart the need to be silent. She went on to and head. We are living in a time now suggest, that because we don’t gather where it is more and more important as community to sing and dance, our to drop into your heart. If we have

blocks in our throat, this can be more difficult. Chanting, which I began doing regularly two years ago is an easy and fun way to free the throat chakra as well as open and awaken the heart. Whether you are singing in the shower, singing with your kids or singing in your car, know that this is an action of well-being and encourage others around you to sing. If you are afraid to sing or used to sing and haven’t in a longtime, being in a group might help; find a chorus or go to a kirtan It could open you to your true and happy self in miraculous ways. There is a growing understanding of the intricate relationship between many types of health disorders and the personal experiencing of emotions, stress, attitudes and beliefs. If we can have a positive impact on these factors there is an important opportunity to reduce the burden of illness and the suffering illness causes. A growing body of research demonstrates that a variety of creative engagements (the arts) can positively impact these emotions, attitudes and beliefs, contributing to greater health and wellness for the individual. Additionally, the arts have long been recognized for their power to bridge differences — connecting individuals of different backgrounds and experiences through the shared experience of art, music, literature and dance, thus healing communities as well as individuals.
Dr. Jeremy Nobel, MD, MPH Foundation President and Founder of The Foundation for Art and Healing in Brookline recognizes that much has been learned already about the benefits of art in preventing illness and generating a sense of well-being, but that there is still much more to learn through scientific research. Additionally, further effort must be put into broadening awareness of the power of art to discover, explore and share what is most important to us as individuals and ultimately through that process, to heal. Whether it is expressive writing, music, movement or visual arts, all share the ability to change people’s perspectives, moods, and overall health. Learn more www.artandhealing.org
JAKE KOBRIN LAURA TRYON JENNINGS My paintings represent the complexity and intricacy of life and relationships. Within each piece I use an amalgam of color and composition to depict the wavering tension between tranquility and chaos. My perspective is achieved by physically viewing my subject as though I am looking down at a puzzle, connecting the shapes that don't appear to fit but somehow work to complete a scene. Some works include articles and details that are seemingly out of place, just as relationships and life are not always in tidy order. Other paintings have a feeling of peacefulness, serenity, and enlightenment. Each piece conveys the message that we ought to take time from our hectic pace to reflect, treasure life's simplicity, if only for a moment. www.LTryonJennings.com

Jake immersed himself in an inner world of his own creation. During his youth and throughout his adolescence, his artwork was his sanctuary, and during that period of hermit-like dedication he fostered a passion for visual art that has only grown throughout his life. “My artwork strives to revitalize the medium of visual art as a spiritual tool to communicate to the viewer a rich inner world that is accessible to all. In this way it serves as a sacred mirror, a vehicle of self discovery for both the artist in the process of creation and for the viewer as a reflection of a numinous and uncharted aspect of the psyche. My artwork manifests almost entirely from a subconscious place, influenced by the automatist techniques of the great surrealists. My artwork is also greatly influenced by nonordinary, shamanic, and transpersonal experiences, Eastern philosophy and psychology, the thriving psychedelic avant-garde of Burning Man, and the burgeoning Visionary counter-culture. I strive to blend an eclectic array of artistic and cultural influences with a classically-informed aesthetic to produce artworks that are both visually and conceptually interesting.” www.kobrinart.com

Ignite The Genki Spark
WOMEN ARE CONDITIONED to suppress or think of our needs, ideas, or dreams as secondary. We are not trained to think of ourselves as visible leaders. This conditioning is especially prevalent among Asian women. The Genki Spark is an all women pan-Asian, multigenerational (teen50+) performance troupe that uses community building and the arts as vehicles for self-expression and leadership development. We model cultural pride, promote the message of respect for all and use the security of community (over 30 women and girls) to bravely step out, resist the pressures of assimilation and show ourselves in our strength and vulnerability. Our primary art forms include Japanese taiko drumming, spoken word and personal narratives. Taiko combines movement, rhythm, voice and spirit to challenge the conditioning that many Asian women grow up with. Taiko is extremely physical requiring focus, stamina and a strong, confident stance. Drumming in unison with other women provides an experience of what it means to be

powerful that nurtures our spirits and builds confidence. We undo the internalized conditioning of oppression by sharing our identities and life stories and developing the safety and confidence to speak on stage. For many of us it’s the first time we’ve reflected on the effects of oppression and pressures of assimilation, publicly identified as a woman of color, or spoken in public with our accent! Our audiences love our Genki (happy, healthy alive!) performances and role modeling. We have had young people proudly claim, 'I speak two languages too!' or 'My father is from India too!' or 'I'm also adopted!' Yoga and Ayurveda
The effects of seasonal change are upon us! As we left summer and have transitioned into fall, we feel the effects of seasonal change. The heat and high energy of summer leads to a "drying out" depletion, and dissipation, of energy in the Fall. Plant life begins to wither. The days gets shorter, darker, and with less sun, our energy goes down, too! We're all hard-wired for being in step with nature and its rhythms, whether we like it or not! But, we can do some small things to help us cope, and choose foods and health practices that can benefit the body and aid in seasonal transitions. According to Ayurveda, (yoga's sister science, known as "The Science of Life"), there are three primary life forces or 'doshas' that govern the body and also correspond to our seasonal environment and the Five Elements. Kapha dominates winter into spring, Pitta the summer season, and Vata dominates fall. When the Vata dosha is balanced, one feels creative, light, inspired, exuberant and has mental clarity. Steadiness and stability are important for transitioning with ease from one season to the next. (The qualities of steadiness
13
and ease are integral to Yoga practice itself, regardless of season)… The environmental "winds of autumn" add to the "Vata" qualities of Fall, which are: quick, light, cool, dry, govern ether (air) and dawn and dusk. We may start to notice this effect on our bodies in terms of skin dryness, constipation, or perhaps increased aches and pains, especially in pelvis and hips. We may experience insomnia or nervous anxiety, Vata

is most aligned with the body's nervous system but also influences all movements and impulses, the cavities, spaces within our bodies. Some simple Ayurvedic practices for mitigating dryness and improving health: Sinus cavity nasal rinsing using a Neti pot and pharmaceutical-grade salt keeps nasal cavities moist and germs out. Neti pots are found all drug stores now and are quite effective in keeping colds and mitigating indoor dryness. It takes 60 seconds to do it, its painless and easy - once you get the hang of it. Turning off computers and TV's at least two hours before bed help the body's natural circadian rhythm adjust to the seasonal darkness: excess blue spectrum light from computers, small devices and TV's can stimulate the brain and make it difficult to sleep deeply. A half hour of quiet downtime before bed, and oiling the soles of the feet (using a dry body oil, or pure cold-pressed sesame oil with a few drops of Lavender essential oil) helps excess dryness and "grounds" the body for quiet rest. Yoga practice can help us to mitigate the undesirable continued on page 15 . . .

effects of seasonal change, too! Spinal stabilization should be emphasized now as well as a yoga practice centered on calming the nervous system. The Standing Poses help gain stability and steadiness while developing and holding warmth: such as Tree Pose, the Warrior Series, and Downwardfacing Dog, with the added benefits of inversion for increased circulation and immunity. Viparita Karani, or "Legs-up-the-Wall" is calming to the nervous system and eases tension in the legs, while also circulating the Lymphatic System. "Child Pose" done with supports of pillows for the front of body is very calming and great for opening tight hips. Wide-leg seated or standing postures feel great right now, too. Breathing techniques such as Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) is calming and helps to balance the nadis (central channels in the body that govern our life-force). If you can't make it to a class, just a few simple yoga postures for five or ten minutes a day can improve your mind as well as your body! Partake in the activities and foods connected with fall and winter… Walk the forests that are changing with vivid colors, pick crisp apples from a local orchard and bake them… make some hot chai tea to ward off the cold…Eat warm, cooked root vegetables and allow yourself some quiet time by a fire, outside or in, to regroup and wind down. Staying connected to the Earth and its seasons will bring you a quiet happiness and health for the long term . . . enjoy!

The first step in slimming down your hips is creating strength in the deep abdominal and back muscles. Did you know leg exercises generate forces that are transmitted through the hips to your spine? Therefore your choice of "hip slimming" exercises must consider what your body's individual strengths and weaknesses are in order to safely improve the hip area. If core strength and spine stability are overlooked when performing hip retraining exercises, the hips won't be able to find their sense of balanced strength. Certain muscles create flexion at the hip joint, as when you’re climbing. Opposing muscles extend the hip, such as in flutterkicking. There are muscles that lift the legs to the side(abduction) and opposing muscles which bring them together(adduction). Skating, for example, would require both of these motions. The hips also include muscles that allow rotation of the leg inward and outward, such as in golfing. Since there is a direct connection from the pelvic floor to the abdominals, these muscles too have a role in proper hip muscle balance. Often, the stabilizers of the hip and spine become weak, leading to instability at the base of movement. As a result of this unstable base, the larger leg muscles compensate to help create stability; unfortunately this creates even more unsteadiness. If your focus is on the
17
hip area, remember that most hip muscles have an effect on the pelvis and spine. By first assessing which muscles are weak, tight, shortened or lengthened, you can learn to develop a proper training program to improve hip function and appearance. A common occurrence in chronic lower-back and hip issues is a weakness in the abdominal and gluteal connection, combined with tight hamstring and hip flexors. This is especially prevalent in those who sit for extended periods of time. No matter what causes a hip muscle imbalance, training that includes core strengthening, along with proper leg stretching and strengthening, can save you from chronic hip, lowerback, sacroiliac, knee, or ankle pain.

Slimming Your Hips Is Not A Simple Task
STRUCTURAL THERAPIES
Holistic Intervention is Key
To Facilitating
Whole Body Wellness
by Ian L. Rubinstein, M.P.T. The physical body tends to be a receptacle for life’s traumas that affect us on a day-to-day basis since conception. As trauma affects us, it is either immediately processed and released, or it winds up creating a “knot” that alters our physiological functions. A simple ache or pain in your body may have not-so-simple, far-reaching “root” causes. A root can be defined as an issue or restriction in the body that causes the body to alter its normal function. These interconnected issues can lie anywhere in the body, including in organs, bones, connective
tissue/fascia, nervous systems, and energy systems. Energy pathways may be altered, organ functions may diminish, and physical mobility may be hampered. Initially, this issue could be addressed with a simple intervention. However, new incoming traumas will stack themselves upon these existing ones, creating even more complexity, great unrest and multifaceted dis– eases. Here is an example of just how entangled the body can become. Let us say that a young boy fell on the ice and hurt his tailbone (sacrum). He had headaches and some back pain
for a while, but it seemed to fade away. Then, as a teenager he sprained his ankle, which caused him to walk funny, but it, too, “healed” over time. Adulthood arrived and stress seemed to arrive with it. The stress produced some bowel issues (ex: irritability, constipation). This seemed to connect to his back and caused stiffness and limitations. Now, for the cherry on the sundae, he wound up in a car accident. This occurred right after he heard of the passing of his favorite relative. Well, needless to say, his whiplashed neck and grief-burdened chest are producing migraines, which have taken the place of his occasional

He has developed a unique combination of therapies, combining manual soft tissue release techniques with traditional physical therapy. This not-so-typical intervention has proven key to addressing his patients’ many states of “dis— ease”. Ian’s specialties include, but are not limited to: Neck/ Back Pain, Headaches/Migraines, Bulging/Herniated Discs, Pinched Nerves, Tendonitis/ Bursitis, TMJ Dysfunctions, Fibromyalgia. Experience has taught Ian that under physical duress, restrictions develop that cause an individual’s body tissues to feel restricted, burdened, and/or “dis—eased”. Remove the core restrictions and the body

returns to its relaxed, balanced, healthy state. He has developed a unique therapy that focuses on listening to the body, identifying the trouble areas, and intuitively responding to its needs. Unlike traditional chiropractic and physical therapy methods which emphasize routine manipulation of the symptomatic body part, Ian utilizes a distinctive approach by incorporating techniques like Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation and other forms of soft tissue release. This is what he refers to as “Light Touch” therapy. This diverse blend provides a patient with a therapy flexible enough to address many causes of the symptoms.

Where and how should a person who contains unresolved restrictions begin the road to facilitative correction? Medications have the tendency to mask the symptoms for the goal of immediate “relief" and Surgery may result in the removal of"damaged" tissues, with the originating core issues remaining. An integrative approach involves interventions that respect the body’s individual needs. Holistic bodywork may be required to facilitate releases of restrictions through a variety of different body-directed techniques. 1. Craniosacral Therapy – a manual technique utilizing a light pressure at specific locations on the body to release restrictions within the entire central nervous system and all of its connected tissues. 2. Reiki – healing energy that is applied to deficient areas to help the body perform necessary corrections down to the cellular level. 3. Visceral Manipulation – gentle mobilization technique designed to release adhesions and restrictions within the organs and other viscera that have produced compensatory, protective movement patterns. 4. Chinese Energetic Medicine – energetic technique that provides the body with key information necessary for the nervous system to enact the corrections necessary for healing of a multitude of issues. 5. Myofascial Release - The "Myofascial release" is the soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. First described by Andrew Taylor Still and his early students, the therapy relaxes contracted muscles, improves blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulates stretch reflex in muscles
19
6. Somatic Therapy - The somatic bodywork techniques are designed to correct soft tissue problems involving muscles, ligaments, tendons, myofascial muscle coverings and repetitive strain injuries. Injuries can produce scar tissue and cause muscles, fascia, joints and tendons to adhere to bone and muscles. Fascia can lose its suppleness and no longer slide smoothly over other tissues. Muscle, ligament and tendon fibers can separate, twist and become unconsolidated. Tense, stuck or mispositioned muscles can impinge on nerves, produce chronic pain and restrict movement. 7. Structural Integration - A bodywork modality focusing on fascial manipulation, increased body awareness, and movement education. Intended to improve postural balance and functional ease by aligning and integrating the body in relationship to gravity. 8. Thai Bodywork or Nuat Thai is a system of massage and assisted stretching developed in Thailand- is unique among massage therapies in combining both physical and energetic aspects. It is a deep, full-body massage progressing from the feet up, and focusing on sen or energy lines throughout the body, with the aim of clearing blockages in these lines, and thus stimulating the flow of blood and lymph throughout the body. 9. Neuromuscular Therapy - (NMT) is an approach to soft tissue manual therapy in which a practitioner applies quasi-static pressure to soft tissue in order to stimulateskeletal striated muscle. Through applied knowledge of trigger points, neuromuscular therapy addresses postural distortion (poor posture), biomechanical dysfunction, nerve compression syndrome, and ischemia. The bottom line to the intricacy of chronic dis–eases is to utilize an approach that considers all of the possible issues lying deep within the
Healthy Living Magazine FALL/WINTER 2013-2014
body’s layers. Holistic therapeutic regimes have been created to accomplish just such a task. They function as catalysts for the release of restrictions by listening to the individual’s body and providing just the right amount of intended physical touch or energy application to facilitate the release process. These, and many other skilled applications, provide the body with the tools needed to systematically unwind its dis–eases, and restore the functions it once possessed prior to the traumas.

"In the process of nature there is no throwing away" - Catherine Osgood Foster Why compost? First It is the way of nature. Mother Nature has been composting since the beginning of time. Second it's free! In these economic times who couldn't use a freebie now and then. Third It is GOLD! It is by far one of the best things you can do for you garden, lawn and all your plantings. Most importantly it is vital to soil health. No amount of fertilizer can make up for poor soil, nor will your plants withstand disease drought, pest and other stresses. Compost contains nutrients that your plants need for optimum performance and it has the microbes in it that will hold onto those nutrient instead of letting them leach away into our water table. In some cases you may not even need to fertilize soil that is enriched with compost. Compost also improves soil structure. The organic matter combines with the soil particles of sand silt and clay and creates small aggregates or crumbs. Crumbly soil is good structure as apposed to sand or clay. These crumbs hold onto moisture on their surface making it available to your plants all the while making air pockets and spaces for oxygen and room to grow, and good drainage. Microbes Decomposition has been going on for millions of years. Microbesmicroscopic bugs- make this happen. In 1 Tbls of compost there are over 1 billion forms of life! Each of these tiny bugs has a job and they all work symbiotically with each other for an end result . . . LIFE. They help break down the millions of tons of organic refuse produced on the Earth each day, leaves, garbage, industrial waste, everything! AND they do this in your lawn and garden too. Without these microbes there would be no

decomposition, they are the alchemist, garbage collectors and mini refineries all rolled into one.
"Compost contains nutrients that your plants need for optimum performance . . . "
4 Basics Needed to Make Compost Carbon- an energy source, Nitrogen- a protein source, Oxygen & Moisture Carbon- Just like you and I, we need carbs to give us energy. Same for your compost. This is the tough dry material or the "browns", like dried leaves, straw, sawdust and corn stalks.
ll
Nitrogen- This is the activator. This gets things cooking, like manure, grass clippings, green vegetation, blood meal or kelp. These are high nitrogen materials. It is helpful to think of the carbon materials as the food and the nitrogen materials like our digestive enzymes.
bacteria called AEROBES.When there is not enough air the aerobes cannot survive and the ANAEROBES take over slowing the process by up to 90%. The aerobes will do a more complete job of composting than their counter parts. Moisture- Not enough moisture slows decomp, to much water forces out air suffocating and creating a stinky mess. Moisture content should be about 45-50% . . . like a rung out sponge. Nan Ingraham has worked at Hyannis Country Garden on Cape Cod for over 17 years and has a specialty in turf management. The Green
This month, local rawist and avid juicer, David O'Brien and his co-partner Rosangela Parsons, will be opening the South Shore’s newest juice bar, aptly named ‘The Green Light,’ at 808 Washington St., Route 53, in Pembroke. Smoothies, fruit nectars, and superfood addons, such as chia seeds, will be available, and O’Brien plans to use organic products and partner with local farms whenever possible. What’s more, the menu will feature exotic and seasonal selections far beyond what you’ve come to expect at a juice counter. When asked where he came up with his smoothie recipes, O’Brien said, “I have been working on these recipes over the last few years. I make an amazing raw vegan yogurt made with my own probiotics as well as raw vegan cheeses. They are so good for you. I have a raw, vegan coconut cream that people eat with their eyes closed. It’s hard to explain how good it is. You have to taste it to fully appreciate it.”
Light to good health
Kale is an ingredient O’Brien uses in many of his recipes. “Kale is full of calcium,” he said. “You can order it in our soon-to-be-famous ‘Green Light Juice,’ as well as add it to your superfood smoothies. Hail to kale! I also make a great kale avocado salad that tastes so good as well. I use a ton of kale, it’s one of my favorites.” Have you seen the documentary ‘Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead’? According to O’Brien, “It shows how sick we can get from eating the Standard American Diet (SAD). The good news is, you can heal yourself back from being super sick to being super healthy. I see it happen to everyone who chooses to make the changes. “I have learned a lot over the last 7 years,” O’Brien said, “and I know that The Green Light, which offers the best juices, smoothies and classes, as well as great raw food specialty items, is not for everyone. However, EVERYONE is always welcome.
Feeding the likes of kale, spinach and ginger into his juicer, O’Brien said, “I am
excited to be opening my first place. It has been a dream of mine for the last seven years. My goal is to offer people an unexpected experience of excellence and to provide them with the best. I would like to invite everyone to stop by and check it out. The Green Light is a place where you will leave feeling better than when you came in.”

FIGHTING DIABETES
Diabetes Remission Possible By Dr. Mercola
with Diet, Exercise
It has taken decades, but medical professionals are finally starting to give diet and exercise for the prevention and reversal of type 2 diabetes some welldeserved attention. ". . . the new study can give people with the disease hope that through lifestyle changes, they could end up getting off medication and likely lowering their risk of diabetes-related complications," Reuters Health reports.1 The research, also featured by MedPage Today, demonstrates that diet and physical activity are the answer diabetics have been searching for, which is exactly what I've been teaching since I started this web site, 16 years ago. Some Findings; The Only Way to Avoid and/or Reverse Type 2 Diabetes Amazingly, one in four Americans has some form of diabetes or prediabetes. If this is not a clear sign that conventional health recommendations are flawed, I don't know what is. I too have personal experience with this disease. I developed it myself for a short while, when I tried to implement an Eat Right for Your Type program in the late 90s. Additionally, most of my paternal relatives (my dad included), have, or have died from, diabetes. My personal experience with diabetes and subsequent review of the literature made it very clear
to me that virtually every case of type 2 diabetes is reversible . . . And the cure for type 2 diabetes has nothing to do with giving insulin or taking drugs to control your blood sugar. In fact, giving insulin to someone with type 2 diabetes is one of the worst things that can be done. The truth of the matter is that type 2 diabetes is a fully preventable condition that arises from faulty leptin signaling and insulin resistance, both of

which are directly diet- and exerciserelated. It is NOT a disease of blood sugar. Once you understand that, the remedy becomes clear: To reverse the disease, you need to recover your body's insulin and leptin sensitivities. The ONLY way to accomplish this is through proper diet and exercise. Bariatric surgery, which is being increasingly recommended as a diabetes treatment, will NOT do the trick, and there is NO drug that can correct What The Law Says leptin signaling and about who can attend an IEP meeting? “Chosen insulin resistance. by the discretion of the parent or the local Adhering to the educational agency, other individuals who have following guidelines knowledge or special expertise about the child.” Candita Mamet, MSW can help you do at Former School Adjustment least three things & behavioral What The Law Means Counselor that are essential for specialist with over 8 years The school or parents may bring other people successfully treating experience. to the IEP meeting. • Exercise regularly. Exercise is an absolutely essential factor, and without it, you're unlikely to get this devastating disease under control. It is one of the fastest and most powerful ways to lower your insulin and leptin resistance. • Avoid trans fats. • Get plenty of omega-3 fats from a high quality, animal-based source, such as krill oil. • Optimize your vitamin D levels. Recent studies have revealed that getting enough vitamin D can have a powerful effect on normalizing your blood pressure and that low vitamin D levels may increase your risk of heart disease. • Optimize your gut flora. Your gut is a living ecosystem, full of both good bacteria and bad. Multiple studies have shown that obese people have different intestinal bacteria than lean people. The more good bacteria you have, the stronger your immune system will be and the better your body will function overall. Fortunately, optimizing your gut flora is relatively easy. You can reseed your body with good bacteria by eating fermented foods (such as fermented vegetables, natto, raw organic cheese, or raw milk kefir) or by taking a high-quality probiotic supplement. • Address any underlying emotional issues and/or stress. Non-invasive tools like the Emotional Freedom Technique can be helpful and effective. • Get enough high-quality sleep every night. • Monitor your fasting insulin level. This is every bit as important as your fasting blood sugar. You'll want your fasting insulin level to be between 2 and 4. The higher your level, the worse your insulin sensitivity is.

" So, what IS
by Betsy Powell-Pelrine
Polarity Therapy?"
“So, what is polarity therapy?” you ask. Well let me tell you this question certainly comes up a LOT! And the answer to this question gets explored often in the course of training for polarity therapists. There are plenty of polarity therapists out there and the work can be profound. But exactly what is it and how does it work? Polarity therapy is an approach to wellness that includes diet considerations, movement in the form of polarity yoga, and polarity therapy bodywork. Dr. Randolph Stone, an osteopath and naturopath developed polarity therapy and his completed works were published in the mid 1980’s. The American Polarity Therapy Association or APTA is the professional organization that certifies professionals and upholds the standards of practice and code of ethics. Polarity therapy is extremely effective in getting more of the life we want and works directly with the all the anatomical systems of the body as well as the subtle energy fields. The theory behind polarity therapy as recognized by Dr. Stone is that energy has a positive (+) and negative (-) pole and when these poles are connected there is a neutral flow. Energy “steps down” into form as elements becoming denser: ether, air, fire, water, and earth. These elements make up the entire physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual being. Dr Stone identified that energy in motion is health, and stagnated energy is dis-ease. This movement or lack of movement affects “subtle energy patterns” throughout the being as well as their relationships and reflexes to one another.

Sessions can be received with clothing on and typically last about 90 minutes or so including the intake and exit interviews. Clients come for sessions for relief of various symptoms such as stress and tension, lack of motivation, trouble finding a good job or relationship, etc. For example; a client comes with complaints of headache, slow digestion, and is consistently angry with her boss and frustrated that life is not more fulfilling but can’t seem to make any positive changes. The polarity therapist will recognize what elements are contracted or not moving, in this case fire, and use a

variety of bodywork techniques during the session to create expansion, movement, and balance in the being and then recommend foods and yoga postures that will enhance the continued neutral flow.
The CNS is responsible for receiving and integrating internal and external sensations and responding to that stimulus. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is all the nerves and nervous tissue outside of the CNS. The PNS includes the sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) and the parasympathetic nervous system (rest and digest). Information gets to the brain by way of electricalchemical messages from nerves and the spinal cord, then the brain

Sessions focus quite a bit on the nervous system so let’s explore that a little. The central nervous system (CNS) includes the brain and spinal cord and lives in the skull and spine, completely protected by bone and bathed in cerebral spinal fluid (CSF).

Polarity sessions activate the parasympathetic nervous system to relax the client and include work on the head and spine, and skeletal alignment. This allows the entire nervous system to better do its job of sensing and integrating information and sending out proper response signals. When the nervous system is freed up all the tissues of the body have the opportunity to rest and repair. We can begin to really hear and respond to our inner signals. The brain is also where our perceptions, attitudes, and beliefs
come from which are completely effected by our “story’ or the thoughts and memories we have and what we feel is absolutely true. It’s like a filter that might be clear and clean and it might be clogged and dirty. Think about it: every stimulus creates a unique electrical-chemical response that alters cells, tissues, organs, organ systems and yes, the entire being that are all filtered through beliefs and attitudes. Your reaction to my statement is creating an electrochemical response in your body right now that is affected by your perceptions. Receiving sessions can help clear up or “repair” our thinking as clients often have “ah-ha” moments during and after sessions. Imagine life with fewer negative thoughts and emotions running the show and how that might affect overall health.

Cancer Survivors Get Empowered
by Pauline Alighieri
Nearly 14 million people in the U.S. have survived cancer, estimates the American Cancer Society. Yet many -whether they are newly diagnosed, receiving treatment or have completed treatment long ago - still worry with questions about how to stay as strong and healthy as possible. To give cancer survivors and their caretakers strategies and inspiration to move beyond cancer and experience life with all its joys and challenges, the Friends of Mel Foundation is hosting its annual conference, The Art of Living - Life Beyond Cancer, on Saturday, Nov. 2 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel in Quincy. The Art of Living - Life Beyond Cancer conference addresses many issues
cancer survivors confront on a daily basis. Keynote speaker Mitch Golant, Ph.D., a senior vice president of strategic initiatives for Cancer Support Community, kicks off the event with a much needed discussion on distress - a byproduct of depression and anxiety - which is prevalent among cancer survivors, yet often dismissed by the medical community. This innovative conference features 16 professionally-led workshops that explore and discuss fitness plans for cancer survivors, nutrition, supplements, techniques to manage brain fog and that miserable feeling of lethargy, how to get back into the job market after a devastating cancer diagnosis, dealing with
the cost of cancer, dating and romance after treatment, and many more important topics. It’s time for cancer survivors and caretakers to feel heard and empowered. Registration is $25. Go to www.Friendsofmel.org or call Cancer Survivors Get Empowered 781.878.8639.

Life Over Cancer
I personally know the healing power of eating fresh, simple foods and avoiding processed sugary foods – I made the change 10 years ago and feel so much better – I can't go back! When my dad was recently diagnosed with inoperable mesothelioma, I searched all around the country for a realistic, comprehensive treatment plan that included an integrative approach to cancer care. While the major cancer centers we visited all recommended he try chemotherapy, they couldn't offer any nutrition advice. So I kept searching . . . "Integrative oncologist" may seem like an oxymoron, but they really do exist! I also needed to find someone who could be realistic. My dad would never juice 80 carrots a day, but he would be willing to improve his diet while undergoing chemotherapy, something he wanted to do. I had a chance to sit down with Dr. Keith Block at the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Care in Illinois and author of Life Over Cancer and asked him if eating fresh, whole foods really makes a difference in the fight against cancer. He says the simple answer is yes. Everything you eat or drink changes the chemistry of your blood. For nearly three decades, Dr. Block and his research staff have studied how diet and lifestyle changes (two things patients can control) can slow cancers, ease chemotherapy side effects, improve quality of life and give survivors an edge. Dr. Block has noticed that nutrition has a profound effect. Patients who take control of their daily choices are in better shape to fight cancer and respond better to treatment. Dr. Block advises his patients eat more: • Egg whites • Legumes (lentil beans, chick peas) • Seeds • Nuts • Good fats (olive oil, flaxseed oil, fish oil) • Cold water fish (wild salmon) • Whole grains • Cruciferious vegetables (broccoli, cabbage)
29
• Berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries) • Green tea Dr. Block advises his patients avoid: • Dairy products (promotes inflammation and mucus production) • Red meat (iron supports cancer cells and too high in bad fats) • Processed sugary foods (promotes inflammation and fuels cancer) • Bad fats (trans fats, saturated fats in processed baked goods)
Dr. Block says sugar can give cancer the upper hand.
He sites studies that suggest breast cancer patients who add exercise and cut out processed sugar are able to keep their insulin levels under control and cut their risk of recurrence in half and decrease cancer death by twothirds. He adds, "Cancer cells are glucose guzzlers. Think about this, the way a Petscan works is by introducing glucose into a patient to see the cancer cells that would divide more rapidly because of the glucose. There are many studies that show in various cancers that show as you increase blood sugar levels, you speed up growth of cancer. In fact the survival, response to treatment the outcomes are all clearly associated with the ability to maintain or lose control of sugar levels and its impact on insulin." Dr. Block has also noticed patients who eat nutritious foods and take certain supplements during chemotherapy ease side effects.
• Take fish oil (anti-inflammatory) • Take curcumin (anti-inflammatory) • Sit outside in morning sun for 15 minutes Dr. Block has his patients mix powdered glutamine in water before, during and after chemotherapy to prevent mouth sores and neuropathy – tingling of the hands and feet. Dr. Block says,"What we have our patients do is take 10-20 grams of glutamine in a bottle of water and have them sip it during chemotherapy. It will help prevent mouth sores. It will boost immune function and it will protect from some of the nerve damage that can occur from chemotherapy."
Heather Van Nest is a journalist, on CBS/10Connects News. You can watch this video interview with Dr. Block on Heather's Natural Health website www. heathersnaturalhealth.blogspot.com
Dr. Block advises his patients try these things before chemotherapy: • Take two 500 mg capsules of ginger root 15 minutes beforehand • Exercise for 15 minutes an hour before treatment (walk, ride bike) • Check vitamin D levels in advance (simple blood test)

How You Can Change Adversity into Abundance
Local medium and Spirit Artist, Nancy Smith, has written an inspirational passage in the new book No Mistakes: How You Can Change Adversity Into Abundance, released this summer by Hierophant Publishing. Nancy is included alongside twentynine other amazing individuals, including best-selling authors Madisyn Taylor, Sunny Dawn Johnston, and HeatherAsh Amara, just to name a few!
basement, and I ran downstairs…but everything was fine—the furnace was humming, nothing as out of place.
This book is a compilation of thirty inspirational personal stories about taking the moments that the authors thought were the most horrible of mistakes and how they turned out to be the greatest blessings anyone could imagine. Each of our thirty authors have contributed an intimate story about a moment like this in their lives.
Had I made a mistake in choosing this house? I couldn’t hear a clear answer from spirit, but I had to trust it would show up.
Nancy’s chapter is called “How to Tame a Ghost”. This is a story about living in a “Haunted” house and having the experience of a spirit leading her into deeper healing in her life after a devastating divorce. Nancy writes: “After a long day of homemaking, the temperature dropped suddenly at sunset, and I had to turn up the furnace. Around nine o’clock that that night, KABOOM! What sounded like a large explosion came from the
I was rattled by not having found the reason for the noise….That night as I went to bed, I was unnerved and feeling out of sorts. I woke up with a start shortly after I fell asleep. Something had happened in the house. I had an eerie feeling of being watched.
SAMPLES OF NANCY'S "SPIRIT ART" WORK
It wasn’t long before I met my new neighbor, Tom. He welcomed me and was thrilled to tell me about my house. Apparently, the previous owner’s husband had a bad temper and she eventually threw him out of the house. A few years later, she brought her husband back into the house. He was in the final stages of lung cancer. He was on oxygen, yet he continued to smoke. One day the cigarette lit his oxygen on fire. The whole room exploded, and he inhaled the flames. He died shortly after being rushed to the hospital. I realized I was living with a spirit who had the same profile as my ex-husband. Wonderful. How was

SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT
No Mistakes
Dystocia is defined as difficult labor and is something every woman wants to avoid. In addition to the pain and exhaustion caused by long, difficult labors, dystocia leads to multiple, medical interventions which may be physically and emotionally traumatic to both you and your baby. Some of these interventions are the administering of pitocin, the use of epidurals, painful episiotomies, forceful pulling on the baby’s fragile spine, vacuum extraction, forceps and perhaps even c-sections. Each of these procedures carry a high risk of injury to you, your baby or both! However, all of these procedures used to hasten the delivery process can be avoided if delivery goes more smoothly to begin with.
uterus to function at its maximum potential. Published studies have indicated that chiropractic care does in fact reduce labor time. We asked Dr. Amanda Halstead of Seaside Chiropractic in Norwell a couple of questions to shed some more light on the issue. Is chiropractic care safe throughout pregnancy? Absolutely! Chiropractors who work with pregnant women receive extensive post-doctoral training learning about the unique needs of pregnant women and their babies. Adjustments are very gentle and specific, promoting optimal health for mom and baby.
Tell us more about reduced labor time through receiving regular chiropractic care during pregnancy. In a study of women who received chiropractic care throughout pregnancy, Dr. Joan Fallon found that first-time mothers averaged a 24% shorter labor, while experienced mothers had a 39% reduction in labor time. This is because pelvic imbalances lead to a difficult labor
whereas proper alignment of the spine and pelvis allows for a more straightforward birth, thus reducing labor time, pain, and trauma to mom and baby. What should I do if medical intervention was part of my labor and birth? As it is for many women, it is important to have your child checked by a chiropractor. A chiropractor can determine whether or not your child’s delicate nerve system was stressed during the birth. If necessary, adjustments will remove any nerve system interference. This allows your child the best opportunity to grow and thrive! Dr. Amanda Halstead is the owner of Seaside Chiropractic in Norwell. She specializes in providing high quality, gentle, holistic chiropractic care to pregnant women and children as well as anyone else who seeks to further their health and wellbeing. When reviewing the obstetric texts, the reported reasons for dystocia are caused by pelvic imbalance and its resulting effects on your uterus and your baby’s position. Chiropractic care throughout pregnancy restores balance to your pelvic muscles and ligaments and therefore leads to safer and easier deliveries for you and your baby. Additionally, the chiropractic adjustment removes interference to the nervous system allowing your

PRENATAL CARE
Preparing for a Safer Birth
by Deb Barrett
Stress has become an epidemic. We all recognize stress as the accumulation of distressful moments that collect within our body, mind and emotions. The outer world can be so distracting that our inner world becomes overlooked as a place of refuge. Luckily, there is a simple way to reconnect to your personal inner peace. As vibrational beings every atom of our being is moving, vibrating at different rates. Much like an orchestra, our body, mind, spirit, and emotions are all different instruments, all playing different notes. Without practice, the instruments continue to play, each in their own way, banging and clashing their different sounds in what is experienced as chronic stress. We can bring our aspects into resonance by using the vibrations of Sound. In the study of Vibro-acoustics there are two important terms to be familiar with, entrainment and laminar flow. Entrainment is the scientific fact that the dominant vibration will cause surrounding bodies to match this dominant frequency. There is also laminar flow which is the outcome of entrainment. Laminar flow refers to all of the layers of our being coming into phase with each other. As vibrational beings we can use sound to alter our vibration. Let's apply this information to our need to slow down and re-harmonize. For your Do It Yourself sound healing mini session you will need three things. Intention, music and a quiet space. You will need at least 20 minutes; an hour is ideal. 1. Intention Quiet your mind, ask, what would make me feel better? You know what it is, something to
33
do with taking care of yourself and/ or feeling worthy of what you wish you had. Some simple intentions are, I AM Relaxed, I now allow myself to feel truly loved, I AM Balanced, or any I AM statement. Write down your intention, say it out loud three times. 2. Music Music effects our emotional body first. As in, how does this make me feel? In choosing your music it's important to know: drums, didgeridoos and percussion instruments open and balance energies below the waste; cellos, violins, piano, the human voice work with the heart and solar plexus; singing bowls, bells, and high angelic voices work on the upper energy centers, throat, third eye and crown. Before choosing your music, check in with your body, where do you carry most of your tension?
deeper. Now, let go and let the music carry you. Congratulations ! You have chosen to make yourself a priority. Your inner-self is already smiling. Make it a habit. You will notice your kneejerk reactions becoming conscious responses to life. Raising your frequency will positively effect everything and everyone around you. Enjoy your experience. Deb Barrett is a Vibro-Acoustic specialist, energy artist and Reiki Master. She has been working with the DreamWeaver, sound and sacred geometry healing temple since 1995. Deb recently opened a new sound healing studio, Sound Therapeutics in Duxbury to continue her passion for moving energy and teaching others how to connect deeply with their own inner wisdom. theblessingchair.com/sound-therapeutics/
3. Quiet Space Find a quiet space. Put a note on the door, "do not disturb unless your hair is on fire" works well. Set up your music, get your intention. Recline, take time to adjust yourself until your body says "Yes". Read your intention out loud, three times. Say it with gusto and turn your music on. An eye pillow or towel to cover your eyes and headphones will help you go

Q: Why does my cat want to drink from the sink faucet, the toilet, the fish tank, or anything other than her water bowl? A: As a fledgling member of “CCLC” (Crazy Cat Lady Club), I have experienced the same phenomenon with most of the cats I’ve shared my home with over the past 45 years. It's so ironic that an animal that notoriously “hates water” can also be so fascinated with it in so many forms, particularly when it’s moving. Most feline experts will agree that cats will instinctively choose to drink moving water over still water because in the wild, moving water is likely to be cleaner. Domestic cats may also prefer to drink in a place away from where they eat and defecate for similar instinctive reasons. There are a number of drinking fountains on

the market that can entice most cats to drink. Wet cat food is 70 to 80 percent water, so your cat may not have much interest in a water bowl. If you feed him dry food, make sure your cat always has access to plenty of fresh water. Additionally, if your cat suddenly develops excessive thirst, you should consult your veterinarian, as it

A: In my opinion, yes. Effective flea and tick treatments can be expensive and nobody loves the idea of applying insecticides to their pets. But the risk of a flea infestation or a debilitating case of Lyme disease from a tick bite compels me to remain faithful to the monthly spot treatments for all of my dogs and cats. Fleas can be transferred to your pet even if they are just in close proximity to an infested animal. Can you be certain that every animal that is with your pet at the vet, groomer, kennel, pet sitter or daycare is free of fleas? Probably not. At our daycare, we require all of our clients to be on effective treatment year-round. But just in case, we always check for fleas if we observe any unusual itching or scratching in our clients. The tick is another problem that doesn't just go away after Labor Day. Ticks are born to do three things: climb, eat and make more ticks. Ticks are born on the ground and instinctively climb upwards on whatever they can find, usually grass. They hang around and wait for something warm and furry to walk by. They hitch a ride on a passing animal, have a meal, drop off and can lie around for months until they get hungry again. Ticks that don't get lucky keep climbing and may end up at the top of bushes or in trees. In the Fall, these ticks drop to the ground with the leaves and now have another chance to find a passing meal. Unless there is a deep cover of snow on top of these leaves, you and your pets are fair game. For those who choose not to treat their animals, there are now ways to treat your environment, including your outdoor living area. Jonathan Boyer, an Associate Certified Entomologist and principal of Ecologic Entomology, a Boston-based, pest-

Q: I just got a new puppy and would love for him to go jogging with me. When can he start running with me? A: Exercise has many health benefits for pets as well as humans, but there are some considerations that you need to make before you take your new puppy out for a run with you. To best answer this question, I consulted Dr. Agata DeMarco, DVM, of Kingston Animal Hospital. “Puppies do not know their physical limits," DeMarco said. "Many veterinarians, researchers and breeders agree that puppies and growing dogs can develop skeletal problems and premature joint damage from excessive, prolonged or forced exercise. There is no rule of thumb on how much activity a dog can safely endure, but the common sense approach is to wait until 15 to 18 months of age before engaging in intensive, vigorous, high-impact activity." Dr. DeMarco and I agree that moderate activity, frequent walking, swimming and social play with dogs of similar age and size will
Q: My dog seems so friendly at home and plays great with other dogs at the dog park and at daycare, but whenever I am walking him on his leash, he turns into “Cujo” at the sight of anyone approaching us, with or without a dog. What's wrong with him? A: This is something I witness, firsthand, at my daycare and on dog walks. Dogs that seem to be the best buddies on the playroom floor appear to be arch enemies if crossing paths in the lobby or in the parking lot when leashed and with their parents. To better answer this one, I enlisted the help of our trainer, Karen Lambrecht, Certified Pet Dog Trainer and owner of PAWS-itively Obedient. "There is likely nothing ‘wrong’ with your dog," Lambrecht said. “There could be some underlying issues causing your dog to overreact to other people and dogs while on a leash. One reason may be that your dog simply likes other dogs a great deal and becomes frustrated with being restrained from playing and greeting. Unrestrained, sociable dogs usually approach each other in an arc, coming together gradually with wagging tails, soft eyes and friendly interest. Contrast this scenario with two leashed dogs meeting on the sidewalk."Lambrecht deals with behavioral issues of all kinds in her practice. "These leashed dogs are forced to meet each other head-on, and make direct eye contact which can be threatening to some dogs,” she said.

“The owners pulling on the leash and apprehension can add tension to the situation that the dogs can sense. All of this can confirm to the dogs that a threatening situation is at hand.” When working with dogs like this, we at PAWS-itively Obedient teach our clients to never allow a pulling dog to greet another dog or person. Once they learn to walk with a loose leash, we introduce greeting behavior. The owner always decides which people and dogs their dog may greet. If they decide a greeting is safe, then a three-second greeting is allowed. They then instruct their dog back to them and keep their dog in a ‘sit’ or ‘down’ position beside them while they chat with the other owner or choose to move on.”

IMMUNE SUPPORT
Fight the Flu with Elderberry
by Cindy Hebbard
It is time to strengthen our immune systems naturally before this winter's flu season hits. An ideal herb for the job, Elderberry has been revered throughout much of the world for more than a thousand years for boosting immune health to support prevention of colds and viruses, and it's helpful for fighting off the flu once it has struck. My introduction to Elderberries was making jam, wine and pies with my elder neighbor as a girl. I have appreciated this nutritious food and valuable herbal remedy ever since. My first sighting of the vibrant, deep purple umbels of berries each late summer brings feelings of euphoria and comfort to my entire being. Elderberries are both nourishing and detoxifying. Very rich in vitamin C and flavonoids, including quercetin, as well as tannins, amino acids, carotenoids (pro-vitamin A) and much of the B complex, Elderberries help to alkalize and strengthen most of our organs and systems. They’re also known to benefit the eyes, skin, sinuses, tonsillitis, cholesterol levels, fevers, cardiovascular health, the
genitourinary region and are calming for the nervous system. Can you imagine getting so much wellness from a simple little berry? Your local co-op or Mom-and-Pop health food store likely carries a fine selection of elderberry products in their wellness section. Prevention never tasted so good! My favorite Elderberry syrup, called Sambu (or Sambu Guard) from Flora Health, has been sold on the European market for more than 100 years. My favorite local brand is Elderberry Syrup from Honey Gardens Apiaries of Vermont. Look for other excellent capsule and tincture products, including Gaia, New Chapter and Herb Pharm. One way Elderberry syrup was traditionally used over the centuries was one half to one teaspoon in the morning and again in the evening to keep the immune system strong throughout cold and flu season; smaller children would use about one fourth teaspoon morning and night. If a cold or the flu was coming on, the usage would be increased in frequency.
Some products contain honey, so please use caution in this way if desiring to administer to babies less than one year old. Cindy Hebbard, Certified Herbalist and Wellness Educator, has practiced herbalism, flower essence therapy, shiatsu, and used food as medicine for her family for almost four decades. She studied with Rosemary Gladstar, Stephen Harrod Buhner, and Paul and Barbi Schulick, among others. Cindy provides comprehensive Herbal Wellness Consultations, herb walks, cooking workshops and an Herbal ‘Kids’ Camp, for children, families and people of all ages. Having healed herself from decades of chronic pain from arthritis, eczema, fibromyalgia and multiple chemical sensitivity, Cindy has put her deep exploration of the healing arts to work teaching people with chronic pain and autoimmune issues to heal themselves. HELP RAISE MONEY FOR The Breast Cancer Fund: Who’s cause is dedicated to eliminating the environmental causes of breast cancer. Ready for a night out that gives back? ATTEND THE LUNAFEST FILM FESTIVAL APRIL 6th This season’s program of nine selected films will compel discussion, make you laugh, tug at your heartstrings and motivate you to make a difference in your community. Incredibly diverse in style and content, LUNAFEST is united by a common thread of exceptional storytelling by, for and about women. Take a peek at the films selected for the 2013-14 Season
DATE WITH FATE When it comes to blind dating, some things are meant to be—whether you like it or not.
FIRST MATCH Fourteen year-old Monique “Mo” Morris is the only girl on what used to be an all-boys wrestling team.
FLYING ANNE The more you look at beautiful, eleven-year-old Anne, the
more you’ll notice her “tics.” Anne suffers from Gilles de la Tourette’s syndrome, a condition that makes her body do things she doesn’t want it to, such as suddenly spinning around or licking everything in sight.
GRANNY’S GOT GAME follows a group of septuagenarian women
who don’t let age and ailments stop them from doing what they love—playing basketball. Called the “Fabulous Seventies.” Despite their competitive natures, these women know that friendship is as important as winning.
MARIA OF MANY After being mistreated as a part-time hire, Mexican immigrant María finds her voice, a community, and dignity within the San Francisco Women’s Collective—an all women worker-run group that provides cleaning jobs in exchange for activism on behalf of the rights of domestic laborers.
RUNNING DRY With no job and the power cut off at home, Athina takes
her last 64 Euros and heads to the electricity company, hoping to make some sort of settlement. On the way, she meets an unemployed dad and his hungry child, a woman searching through garbage cans for food, and an elderly gentleman who can’t afford his medications. This is a journey into a contemporary Athens rocked by recent economic crises, with an expected ending.
SIDEWALK A woman walks through life, confronts her changing body and learns to love herself.
TINY MINY MAGIC Sam Cabbage decides to show her appreciation for
her mailman by leaving him a present in her mailbox, and is delighted when he leaves her a present back. A gift giving exchange ensues, culminating in a twist ending and love connection Sam could never have imagined.
