Serving South of Boston to the Cape in Print and Online During my year-long health journey in recovering from breast cancer, I spent endless hours in waiting rooms and on Facebook with my “Breast Friends,” as we called ourselves, who were struggling with similar medical issues. The discussion of alternative therapies always surfaced because it was very much a part of my treatment and I always had a healing practitioner with me on my medical visits to offer their support, wisdom, companionship and services. Alternative therapies were always easy for me to access because of what I do and who I know. I was quite surprised that other patients around me were really very accepting of receiving shared Reiki in the waiting room as we all waited for our appointment. Wink! However, I always felt a tinge of guilt when I’d hear that others would love to have someone accompany them to these appointments on a regular basis, but it was just too expensive and insurance wouldn’t cover it. Complementary medicine and interventions are not typically covered by insurance and, therefore they can really create an economic strain for people paying out of pocket. Now, as we are required to pay for “health” insurance coverage, those who may choose a complementary/natural/holistic approach as opposed to traditional health care, are feeling an additional cost burden due to insurance premiums that have to be paid. From what I’ve learned, in most cases, people who would normally turn to alternative therapies are being forced to forego them, despite the fact that they find them so useful. Our very own South Shore State Representative, Garrett Bradley, of Hingham, is sponsoring House Bill 1892, which will REQUIRE health insurance companies to provide benefits for natural/holistic therapies to the citizens of the Commonwealth, including my “Breast Friends.” Therapies that would be recognized by the bill include: acupuncture, aromatherapy/ flower essences, Ayurvedic medicine, bio-feedback, chelation therapy, chiropractic care, essential oils, guided imagery, herbology/herbal remedies, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, hypnosis/self-hypnosis, iridology, massage, meditation/visualization, mind-body-spirit healing (using the unconscious mind), movement and exercise therapy, naturopathy, nutrition therapy, osteopathy, Reiki/energy medicine, relaxation response, Reflexology, therapeutic touch and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). I cannot express what a significant role some of these therapies played in my recovery process from breast cancer. Let’s afford these opportunities to others who may not be as fortunate, and can benefit from such alternative therapies. PLEASE take a moment to let their voices be heard by calling your local representatives and senators, and let them know House Bill 1892 helps support, maintain and improve our health, wellness and recovery. To stay up to date with this movement, check us out on Facebook at Massachusetts Health Option Thank you for your support, and I hope to see you all at our "10th annual Healthy Living Expo" at the Radisson Plymouth Harbor on Sunday, April 19 and at the "Move your Soul Summer Event" at the Nantasket Beach Resort in Hull on July 16th.

Chemicals and Cancer

by Julia Brody, PhD

The statistics on worldwide increases in breast cancer risk are grim. Rapidly increasing risk in the developing world, where mammography is still rare, tells us we are seeing more disease, not just more diagnosis. The increase cannot be due to inherited genes either, because inherited genes can’t change over just a couple of generations. Studies that show increased risk for women who move from low-incidence regions to high-incidence countries, like the United States, point to something about the way we live in industrial societies. Thus far, scientists have been able to explain less than half of breast cancer risk with all the identified risk

factors. That means that additional, unknown causes must be at work. If we can find out why incidence is increasing, we can learn to prevent future disease. Where should we look for clues to prevention? Synthetic chemicals that poured into the marketplace after World War II are one promising direction, because laboratory studies point to three mechanisms that could link various chemicals to breast cancer: chemical carcinogens that can damage DNA; tumor promoters that can make cells grow; and developmental gland toxicants that can leave the mammary more vulnerable to carcinogens.

HCP All Natural Hair Salon

The U.S. National Toxicology Program has identified 42 chemicals as breast carcinogens in laboratory animals, and about 100 have been identified internationally. Many are common. For example, we are exposed to carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in grilled and smoked food, tobacco smoke, and air pollution from auto exhaust, power plants and other fossil fuelburning processes. Until recently, ethylene oxide was commonly used in hospitals and medical facilities to sterilize instruments, though the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration set limits to reduce Continued on page 4 . . .

breast cancer risk. We now know that synthetic chemicals can also make human breast cancer cells proliferate in laboratory studies. Drs. Ana Soto and Carlos Sonnenschein at Tufts University pioneered the study of estrogen mimics in breast cancer cells after they found a chemical that was accidentally leaching from plastic tubing in their experiments was causing cell growth. Estrogen mimics are part of a larger group of chemicals known as endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) because they affect hormones. EDCs are found in some plastics, pesticides, detergents and cosmetics, among other sources. Most recently, scientists at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency discovered a third way that chemicals may increase breast cancer risk. When they dosed laboratory animals with the pesticide atrazine during certain weeks of pregnancy, the offspring never developed fully mature mammary

a complex mixture of pollutants over a lifetime. But the laboratory studies can help us target precautionary public health policies to reduce exposure, and they point us to urgent areas for breast cancer studies. For more scientific detail and a list of mammary carcinogens and EDCs, read “Environmental Pollutants and Breast Cancer,” from Environmental Health Perspectives.

Love burgers but want to skip the bun? Enter the cabbage leaf. This is an incredibly healthy and delicious alternative. The crisp texture of the leaf works perfectly with the soft and flavorful mushroom, lentil and herb burger.

Mushroom Lentil Herb Burgers & Crisp Slaw Serves 4

For the Burgers 1.5 cups beluga lentils 1 large red onion 3 cups chopped wild mushrooms of choice (I used shiitake and maitake) 3 garlic cloves, minced 3 teaspoons coconut oil, divided 2-3 sprigs rosemary 3-4 sprigs thyme 8-10 sage leaves ¼ cup sun dried tomatoes (soaked for a few minutes if too dry) 1 cup walnuts 2 tablespoons tamari 1 tablespoon olive oil Salt + pepper Scallion for garnish (optional)

Preparation 1. Boil lentils in 2.5 cups water until they are soft but not mushy. 2. While lentils are boiling, prepare the caramelized onion. Heat the olive oil on med-low heat, chop onion and saute with a pinch of sale for approx. 15-20 min until onion is brown and beginning to crisp a little. 3. In a separate pan, heat 1 teaspoon of coconut oil and add mushrooms. Saute for approx. 5 minutes or until they lose some of their water. 4. Add the garlic, chopped herbs, sun dried tomatoes, tamari, salt and pepper, and saute for another 5-7 min. Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes. 5. In a food processor, blend the walnuts seeds until you have a fine flour. Add the lentils, mushroom and veggie mixture, and blend until most lentils are broken down and mixture is sticky. Take out from processor and add the caramelized onions, mix well. 6. To form the patties, form the mixture into a ball approx. the size of your cupped palm. Press until burger is 1.5-2 inches thick.

7. Heat the remaining coconut oil on med. heat and add 3-4 burgers at a time (depending how big your pan is, make sure you leave enough room to flip them). Flip the burgers after 3-4 min on each side and serve warm! Add chopped scallions on top of burgers if you wish. 8. For the slaw, grate or shred the cabbage, carrots, and finely slice the apples. Mix all ingredients for the dressing until emulsified, then add to slaw and mix well. Alena Grahn is the founder of Red Nail Green Veggies blog, which celebrates whole, plant based foods. How to Create Irresistible Desire in Relationships

by Shelly Bullard

Desire. It's that energy that wakes us up, focuses our attention, gets our blood flowing and makes us feel alive! Desire is one of the most enjoyable human experiences there is: wanting something and anticipating getting it. Desire is the energy that surges us into evolution. So what are the qualities that inspire this delicious feeling of desire between two people? I had the pleasure of listening to the lovely Esther Perel speak (the author of the revolutionary book Mating in Captivity), and she had some phenomenal tips on the subject. Following are four qualities that Esther mentioned as being paramount in creating desire in relationships. If your relationship ever starts to feel a little stale (which, of course, is natural from time to time), infuse yourself with

these qualities to bring yourself, and your love, back to life. 1. Playfulness Even the word playfulness makes me feel giddy, so it makes sense why it's a key to desire. Playful energy is light, silly, flowing and uplifting. In a world where we get bogged-down by responsibility of all sorts, playful energy can be the antidote. The reason playful energy makes us feel desire is really simple — it's fun! We all want to laugh and enjoy ourselves. When we experience playfulness with another person, we want more. Voilà! Desire is created.

pirit essages Featuring:

In life, we don't tend to prioritize playfulness over "responsibility" (picking the kids up at school, finishing up a project at work — the to-do lists feel never-ending!). But this seems crazy! What's the point of life if we're not enjoying ourselves?! So let playfulness take the stage in your relationship and you'll absolutely reignite the spark. 2. Admiration I love that Esther listed admiration as one of the qualities that creates desire, and here's why: We feel admiration for others when we recognize them as separate, other, external to ourselves. They are complete individuals in their own right. You are you, I am me. This healthy separation — or recognition that we are each individually whole — is so important in the feeling of wanting more.

3. Novelty Ever notice how you love having sex on vacation? Traveling induces the feeling of newness into our lives, and this a huge aphrodisiac. So, you might be wondering, how do you create novelty in an ongoing, long-term relationship? It's actually easier than you think ... Here's the thing — you're always growing. You are an expanding being. You're in a constant state of evolution. When you're fully committed and engaged in your own growth (through self-exploration, by pushing your own limits, by pursuing your passions, etc.) you are constantly becoming new. This not only creates an interesting life for you, but it creates excitement in your relationship, too. Relationships that value and support the growth of each individual thrive. When we grow, we become new and exciting, both to ourselves and to each other.

4. Presence & Engagement Schedules — while necessary — smolder desire. Why? Because in the midst of day-to-day life, we turn on autopilot and turn off life force. Needless to say, autopilot isn't sexy. Here's the thing: autopilot (or unconsciousness) is the same thing as disengagement — from ourselves and others. We do it as a preservation mechanism, but it backfires. When we shut off, the juice of life shuts off, too. So what's the solution? Well, it's simple: meditation! Meditation is so helpful in increasing our satisfaction in life because it re-engages us to the present moment. It turns us on! If you find yourself moving through your relationship in autopilot, stop, get present and spend some quality, engaged time with your partner. Doing so will be sure to reignite your flame. As I'm sure you recognized from the list above, desire is all about the feeling of expansiveness — growing, being engaged and becoming more of who you really are. When you commit to exploring the freshness of life — in yourself and in others — desire emerges. Get back in contact with the spark that lives within you, and your relationship will surely come alive as a result. awakening

We're all familiar with the fantasydelusion that another person is supposed to "complete you." Well, as it turns out, if you want to feel attracted to another person for an extended period of time, this isn't the actual case. Because if you truly believe someone "completes you," you're in a dependent relationship — and that can be one of the biggest relationshipbuzz-kills ever. Dependency leads to neediness, and we all know what that does to the spark of passion. So instead, work on allowing your partner to be completely separate from you, and then admire him or her for their differences. By doing so, you are sparking the flames of passion in your relationship.

Strategies to Help You Sleep Better

by Ananta Ripa Ajmera

It's easy to think nothing of missing a little sleep here or there, especially to accomplish more work. I used to believe this, and stayed up many a late night to try to take advantage of the quietness that nighttime provides. The reality of losing sleep, however, is quite grim. Whereas proper sleep gives you the ability to receive knowledge, the ancient Ayurveda texts teach us that lack of proper sleep not only puts us in poor mental states, but also deteriorates our memory, and hampers our focus, creativity and decision-making abilities. In this sense, regular lack of sleep easily gives rise to ignorance, in terms of both thoughts and behavior. Modern health experts agree. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) even conducted a study that found that poor sleep at night can impair our behavior just as much as being legally drunk does. As a lifelong student, and now teacher and practitioner of Ayurveda, I am most passionate about promoting the subscience of Ayurveda called Svasthavritta, which includes many all-natural, dietary and lifestyle-based solutions to a variety of health challenges, including insomnia. As someone who used to suffer from chronic insomnia, these four all-natural

I now find that waking up early (between 4:00am and 6:00am) gives me even more and higher-quality quiet time than I used to experience by staying awake late at night. Waking up early also helps you sleep more easily at night.

Ayurvedic insomnia solutions have all worked wonders for me, and I'm delighted to share them with you. 1. Sleep by 10pm and arise by 6am. "Early to bed, early to rise" is not only a popular colloquial expression; it's also one of Ayurveda's most important insomnia solutions. By going to sleep no later than 10:00pm each evening, and arising no later than 6am, you benefit from the time frame it's easiest to fall and remain asleep. You also live in greater overall harmony with the natural cycles of day and night. The atmosphere during the time period between 8:30pm and 10:00pm is dominant in a quality known in Ayurveda psychology as tamas, which is essentially inertia or dullness. Tamas is a very helpful quality for making it easier to sleep. During the daytime, starting at 6:00am, the atmosphere is charged with the quality of rajas, which is connected with activity and movement.

2. Turn off your T.V. and laptop after 8:00pm. Your mind and psyche is constantly bombarded with inputs from a variety of media sources throughout the day. By turning off the television and computer screens at night, you can do our sleep a big favor by allowing yourself to stay away from mental distractions and start to prepare for the upcoming act of sleep. 3. Create a bedtime ritual. Speaking of preparing for sleep at night, Harvard Business Review recently published an article about the importance of having a meaningful practice to help wind down your day. The science of Ayurveda has recommended this for thousands of years, via its various dinacharya (daily routine) practices. According to Ayurveda's dinacharya protocol, you should spend the hours of 6:00pm and 10:00pm in the company of the people, pets, books and activities that give you a sense of peace, calmness and grounding. Just before bedtime, it's also recommended to adopt a practice that inspires you, such as reading an uplifting book, writing in your journal, going for an evening walk, listening to soothing music, or practicing meditation. 4. Oil your feet, the top of your head, and the back of your ears. Another wonderful health ritual Ayurveda recommends for sound, quality sleep is the practice of oiling the soles of your feet, the top of your head, and the back of your ears with warm sesame oil. Doing so not only promotes healthy sleep; it also helps counteract the aging process and combats stress. Following Ayurveda's insomnia solutions has greatly transformed the quality of sleep I experience. Try these timeless solution, and you, too, can also start to sleep deeply, thanks to Ayurveda. Trends in Yoga & Meditation

by Andrea Rice

If you want to enhance your usual yoga practice or invite more spirituality into your life, here are 14 things to try that you may not have before.

1. Tantra You may associate Tantra with Sting's notorious (and probably exaggerated) marathon sex sessions, but the goals of Tantra and intercourse are actually quite different. While it can still be sexy in practice, Tantra's main focus is to cultivate a connection with the divine by consciously channeling our sexual potency. Earthshattering orgasms are just a bonus. It is believed by both Tantric and Taoist study that our sexual energy is Ad powerful for healthy source Living 1-2 theSSYS most of page.pdf energy 1

in existence. By harnessing this power, we may have the ability to clear blockages within our body and psyche, potentially ridding ourselves of disease and anguish. And though the form has been practiced for centuries, it's becoming more of a buzzword in yoga circles among practitioners, with myriad workshop offerings around the world, and renowned teachers like Keith Mitchell advocating its benefits.

2. AcroYoga A true exercise in trust, AcroYoga is more about letting go of inhibitions than it is circus acrobatics. More yogis everywhere are experimenting with this form of "divine play," building trust between 2/11/15 6:26 PM partners alike. strangers and

Until recently, yoga was traditionally a solo practice of self-study — just you and your mat. But AcroYoga goes deeper, encouraging participants to embrace vulnerability and curiosity, with emphasis on having complete faith in another person to support their body. This form of "therapeutic flying" uses the force of gravity and bodyweight to enhance the stretching and strengthening of many familiar yoga poses. Each partner takes on the role of either "flyer" or "base." It's also feasible for all shapes and sizes of yogis.

mantras harmonized with the Rabab and harmonium, live music can help deepen your practice. Many studios now incorporate live music, DJs and, of course, Kirtan into their regular schedule rotation, offering a more spiritually uplifting experience for students. 4. Hot Barre Yoga A hot topic last year, barre classes were a were a hit with those tired of yoga — now, Hot Barre Yoga classes are offered at many studios across the country. It's a combination of hot yoga with ballet, Pilates, and weight and interval training — with room temperatures averaging around 95 degrees Fahrenheit. 5. Yoga Pole Dancing Women everywhere have rewritten their beliefs about pole dancing, as it becomes a more widely acceptable, and even empowering form of intense exercise. Yoga Pole focuses on teaching

6. Kids Yoga Children can benefit from a regular yoga practice, and even teachers will agree. Regular yoga and mindfulness practices can help children succeed not just in school, but also later in life. Many studios and schools now offer yoga programs to children, but if you're interested and you don't have access to a program, here's a great sequence you can do with your young yogi right at home.

inversions like headstands, handstands and forearm stands by using the pole to help practitioners hold steady. While providing support and stability, the pole also allows students to enter deeper, challenging poses with more ease and less fear. According to Yoga Pole Studio in Brooklyn, "Yoga Pole does not teach you how to strip. There is no spinning in this class, no sashaying. No heels. You don't pant maniacally so much as you breathe, deeply. During class, you don't realize just how much your muscles are working until you wake up the next day and feel that your body has changed." Michelle Grigalunas1-6 Ad.pdf

7. Restorative Yoga With selfcare on the rise, restorative yoga offers a therapeutic approach to asana, minus the rigorous practice of Vinyasa. Restorative yoga invites us to stay in restful poses longer, by using props like blankets, blocks and eye pillows. When we allow ourselves to completely relax, let go and invite in healing, total restoration of our bodies on a cellular level can take place. 10. Reiki Reiki was developed in the Japanese Buddhist tradition in the early 20th century as an energy healing modality. The Reiki practitioner acts as a conduit for universal energy, to rebalance and clear blockages in the chakras, or energy centers of the body. Now, more certification programs are becoming available for practitioner and master-level status. Many Western healers like acupuncturists also offer hands-on Reiki treatment to their patients as part of their therapy. Reiki circles also serve as an opportunity for practitioners to come together as a community, and offer healing to participants or distance healing to those in need.

Sound healing workshops can be offered at yoga studios, and you'll probably notice your teacher playing the bowl at the end of class. 13. Temazcal Sweat Lodge These can be hard to come by, but if you have the chance to attend a traditional Mayan sweat lodge, you must not pass it up! Outside of retreat destinations like Tulum or Nosara, most of these are typically wordof-mouth, and can take place anywhere from the desert in Arizona, to a community park in the Bronx. Safely led by a Shaman, a Temazcal sweat lodge is a highly spiritual purification ceremony. But it is not for the faint of heart. Seated cross-legged

on the dirt floor of a small, pitch-dark hut with a dozen other people for two hours can be claustrophobic for some. There's also the blazing fire pit that's filled with scalding hot stones, dusted with aromatic Copal smudge — to help you purge your inner demons, of course. Aho!

EDITOR'S PICK!! Chant at a Kirtan!! A Kirtan is an ancient participatory music experience. Kirtan can carry us effortlessly to a place of stillness. One of the oldest sacred music traditions of the world, the kirtan call-and-response chanting genre comes to us from India. Using ancient Sanskrit mantras, the kirtan calls upon sacred energies which serve to quiet the mind, remove obstacles, and bring us back to the center of our being. By repeating simple mantras over and over, the kirtan is an easy way for people to experience some freedom from the daily chatter of the mind. And while it is true that we can sing these chants in the solitude of our own home, there is nothing like the magic of chanting live with other participants-from and adding energy to the chant. People often say they feel "buzzed" for days following such a chanting experience. If you want to enhance your usual yoga practice or invite more spirituality into your life, here are 14 things to try that you may not have before.

Your Eyes Are Not Just Windows to the Soul, But to the Body

The eye is literally a window that allows your eye doctor to see what’s going on in the rest of the body. Oftentimes, systemic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, or stroke are discovered during a dilated eye exam. Your eyes can be especially vulnerable to systemic inflammatory conditions such as sarcoidosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease and HLA B27 associated disease. Uveitis, an inflammatory condition of the eye, can be a feature of one of a number of these systemic conditions and can

14

cause damage to the eye tissue and potentially lead to vision loss. It may be a tip off or red flag to doctors that there are problems elsewhere in the body. Typical symptoms include eye redness, light sensitivity, pain or floaters. The challenge is to uncover the mystery behind the red flag, then treat it effectively while working in close collaboration with other specialists such as rheumatologists, pulmonologists, infectious disease specialists and primary care doctors to effectively manage a patient’s care. Testing such as blood analysis for infections, inflammatory markers and genetic predisposition to certain inflammatory disorders, as well as a

chest X-ray or MRI may be ordered in the workup of uveitis. Patients diagnosed with uveitis need frequent monitoring by a healthcare provider specially trained in uveitis. This involves a lot of interaction and communication with patients and their families to help them navigate the complexity of this diagnosis. Fellowship-trained in uveitis and board certified, Dr. Lana Rifkin, MD, is accepting new patients at Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston’s newest office, OCB Plymouth Eye Center, as well as at her Sandwich and Boston offices. An appointment may be scheduled by calling 800-635-0489 or by visiting www.eyeboston.com.

"Eat food, not too much, mostly plants”.

The simplicity and accuracy of those words, written by Michael Pollan in his masterpiece In Defense of Food, are unmatched. Why are plant based foods so powerful? Why do I repeat over and over to my heart patients to get 7-10 servings a day of brightly colored fruits and vegetables? For example, just this week the news channels reported a story that blueberries improve both blood pressure and the healthy flexibility of arteries making them act younger. The secret that blueberries and other selected whole foods possess is that they are rich sources of polyphenols. Let’s get to know these powerful chemicals a bit more. Time to pay attention for a one minute food chemistry lesson. Polyphenols are a group of plant based chemicals that have at least one phenol group (don’t ask me why we don’t call some monophenols – I don’t know). One broad type of polyphenols are phenolic acids including red fruits, black radishes, onions, coffees, cereals and spices. The second broad group are the flavonoids including isoflavones found in soy, anthocyanidins found in berries and wine, flavones found in herbs, flavonols found in broccoli, tomato and tea, flavanones found in citrus fruits and juices, and flavan3-ols found in cocoa, tea and wine. Finally, some famous ones don’t fit into any class and include resveratrol and stilbenes from wine and nuts, curcumin in spices, and lignans in flax seeds.

Polyphenols Improve Your Health in Six Ways 1. Lower cholesterol 2. Lower blood pressure 3. Improve artery (endothelial) function 4. Prevent platelet clumping

www.myhealthylivingmag.com

5. Improve arterial flexibility 6. Improved lifespan

The evidence for the heart benefits for foods rich in polyphenols comes from hundreds of studies. One example published last year was a large study in Europe reporting that a higher intake of polyphenols, particularly stilbenes from grapes and nuts and lignans from flax, was associated with a longer lifespan. In another recent study in over 500 European subjects healthier arteries were found in those who ate raw vegetables and avoided high-fat dairy products. Consumption of fresh fruit, wine and avoidance of high-fat dairy products was also associated with less inflammation in the same subjects. More? In over 34,000 post-menopausal women, intake of flavonoid reach foods such as bran, apples, pears, grapefruit, strawberries, red wine and chocolate were associated with a lower risk of heart disease and all cause deaths.

Honorable mention goes to sage, rosemary, spearmint, thyme, capers, basil, curry, strawberries, and coffee. There is no doubt that food is information. Food can act as a natural medicine, your dinner can determine your destiny, and your fork can decide your fate. Polyphenol rich foods found in fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds are a pharmacy to enhance your bodies “chemistry set”, moving the needle away from inflammation and disease and towards healing and vitality. As the deputy director of the USDA said in a rare moment of candor “Eat your damn vegetables”, a path to health, energy and a long life free of illness can be found at the end of your intelligently placed fork. Dr. Joel Kahn interpreventional ™ cardiologist, America’s Holistic Heart Doc is the director of Corporate Wellness and Preventive Cardiology at the Detroit Medical Center. He is an advocate of lifestyle choices that prevent heart disease. Learn more log into www.drjoelkahn.com

The top 100 richest foods in polyphenols has been studied and published but the top 10 are: 1. Cloves 2. Star anise 3. Cocoa powder 4. Mexican oregano, dried 5. Celery Seed 6. Black Chokeberry 7. Dark Chocolate 8. Flaxseed meal 9. Black elderberry 10. Chestnut

Circles, Spirals, Mandalas, and Labyrinth the path to your connection

by Heather Plett

Circles teach us how to gather – looking into each others’ eyes, sharing our gifts, leaning in, and supporting each other through change and growth.

Incense Natural resins, gums and herbs have been burned as incense since ancient times for their spiritual, medicinal and healing properties they unfold. Different types of incense can provide guidance during your quest to set intention in your life or perfect while meditating during quite reflection. My favorites are: ANGELICA: Which burns for protection, harmony, integration, insight and understanding, stability and meditation. GARDENIA: Which burns for peace, love and healing.

Helpful Tip!

Look for all these tools at: Hafta Havit in Pembroke OpenDoors in Braintree Women of Wisdom in N. Easton

Spirals teach us how to learn and how to live – going inward, seeking the source of our truth and our strength, and then going outward, serving the world with our gifts. Mandalas teach us how to engage our minds and our hearts – slowing down to the speed of contemplation, exploring our creativity, and trusting the intuitive truth that arises.

Heather Plett is a writer, speaker, coach, and teacher whose specialties lie in the areas of creativity, leadership, storytelling and community. At the heart of everything she does is the circle, a shape that brings people back into connection with each other, themselves, the sacred, and the earth. Manitoba, Canada www.heatherplett.com

Sound has been utilized in various cultures for thousands of years as a tool for healing. Whether through the use of mantras as with the Hindis, the Icaros (medicine melodies) of various Indigenous peoples from Central and South America, or Pythagoras' use of interval and frequency, these various techniques all have the same intention: to move us from a place of imbalance to a place of balance.

How does it work? Sound helps to facilitate shifts in our brainwave state by using entrainment. Entrainment synchronizes our fluctuating brainwaves by providing a stable frequency which the brainwave can attune to. By using rhythm and frequency, we can entrain our brainwaves and it then becomes possible to downshift our normal beta state (normal waking consciousness) to alpha (relaxed consciousness), and even reach theta (meditative state) and delta (sleep; where internal healing can occur). This same concept is utilized in meditation by regulating the breath, but with sound it's the frequency that is the agent which influences the shift. What is it like? A sound therapy treatment is both a passive and participatory experience. The passive aspect is that you become more relaxed by laying down and slowing your breath. By doing this, you prepare yourself to become the receiver of sound. It's in this place of stillness that you participate by becoming more open and aware of each sound that comes in. Sound helps create the pathway to this place of stillness the same as a mantra helps you to arrive at the still point of meditation. Some of the tools I use are voice, drumming, tuning forks and Himalayan singing bowls. It's important to note that awareness plays a huge role in our own healing. I find that vocal toning is an incredibly powerful practice that gives us the ability to fine-tune our greatest vibrational instrument: our own body. I always encourage clients to incorporate simple, but effective breathing exercises and vocal toning exercises in their daily

18

routine, to help bring a greater sense of balance into their lives. How do we define the energetic body? If we are able to shift our perspective, we can change our relationship to the issue that may be preventing us from experiencing our optimal homeostasis. Sound not only helps with inducing relaxation, but also has a way of moving through areas of blockage. These energetic blockage areas can be located in our physical bodies, our subtle bodies, or both. The physical body is where we experience localized pain and discomfort. Using tuning forks, especially osteophonic tuning forks (they vibrate at lower frequencies), we can stimulate the release of Nitric Oxide, a free radical molecule that has been proven to positively affect pain transmission and control. Which, in short, means that these frequencies help to create a physiological reaction, while the sound itself helps to influence our auditory system, enabling us to modify our relationship to the pain.

Our "subtle body" is our energetic body. This body is where our life force energy exists, commonly referred to asQi, Chi or prana. In Chinese medicine, meridian points are used to pinpoint areas that have restricted energetic flow to our physical and subtle bodies. The body is known to have thousands of these meridian lines that are mapped out through the body, in the same way we've mapped out the latitude and longitude of the earth. The subtle body holds imbalances and traumas that can eventually manifest in our physical bodies, which is why it's important to look at healing and balance not only from a physical perspective, but as a complete holistic experience that includes mind, body and spirit. Sound has the ability to positively affect our whole being. Eileen McCusick, author of Tuning The Human Biofield, has been exploring the theory that our subtle body acts as memory storage. For example, a tree has rings that extend outward as the tree grows. McCusick suggests that our subtle body expands and stores our life experiences in a similar way. If we apply frequency with tuning forks we can help blocked energy from past experiences move toward the energetic filtration system of each chakra, so that the stuck energy can be recycled back into our life force.

What can sound heal? Using sound as therapy can provide results for a variety of issues including: Sleep disorders Anxiety Depression Stress management PTSD Pain management

Our body, mind and spirit always want to be moving in a direction toward balance, yet we often have too much outer stimulus and noise and not enough time to dedicate to ourselves, which can prevent us from achieving a better state of harmony. Sound has a way of helping us get to the source of this inner peace we all desire.

Nate Martinez has spent most of the past 25 years as a professional musician. Martinez always experienced a sense of healing by being able to express himself through music. His passion for music broadened, from solely creating and performing, to learning how music and sound can actually heal us. Martinez went on to study shamanism with Denise Guerringue, intuitive healing with Peter Roth, and earn a Sound Therapy certification through the Open Center. Martinez launched a private sound therapy practice in 2014. For more information please visit www.ntmsoundhealing.com

Many of us already have a pretty good understanding of the benefits of healthy eating, and the same can be true of sound. This is another example where mindfulness practices like chanting and vocal toning, can help us to find a center and feel grounded. In doing so, when we do have those stressful trigger moments, we may be better equipped to appreciate and discern the sounds more as our own unique symphony constantly happening around us, rather than feel overwhelmed by random cacophony.

Is our environment a factor? It's important to consider what kinds of sound we take in from our living environments. Anyone who's riden on a train knows how painful the sound of a subway train screeching to a halt feels and sounds. Loud sounds can elevate our stress levels, create imbalances in our nervous system, lower our immunity and in extreme cases, cause hearing loss. When we are stressed, our whole relationship to sound changes, and regular everyday sounds can become magnified and contribute to the feedback cycle of the stress, amplifying it even more. By utilizing sound therapy techniques, we can become better listeners and more aware of the sounds we take in.

Holding Space

When my mother was dying, my siblings and I gathered to be with her in her final days. None of us knew anything about supporting someone in her transition out of this life into the next, but we were pretty sure we wanted to keep her at home, so we did. While we supported mom, we were, in turn, supported by a gifted palliative care nurse, Ann, who came every few days to care for mom and to talk to us about what we could expect in the coming days. She taught us how to inject Mom with morphine when she became restless, she offered to do the difficult tasks (like giving Mom a bath) and she gave us only as much information as we needed about what to do with Mom’s body after her spirit had passed. “Take your time,” she said. “You don’t need to call the funeral home until you’re ready. Gather the people who will want to say their final farewells. Sit with your mom as long as you need to. When you’re ready, call and they will come to pick her up.” Ann gave us an incredible gift in those final days. Though it was an excruciating week, we knew that we were being held in spirit by someone who was only a phone call away. In the two years since then, I’ve often thought about Ann and the important role she played in our lives. She was much more than what can fit in the title of “palliative care nurse.” She was facilitator, coach, and guide, rolled into one. By offering gentle, nonjudgmental support and guidance, she helped us walk one of the most difficult journeys of our lives. The work that Ann did can be defined by a term that’s become common in some of the circles in which I work. She was “holding space” for us. What does it mean to “hold space” for someone else? It means that we are willing to walk alongside another person in whatever journey they’re on without judging them, making them feel inadequate, trying to fix them or trying to impact the outcome. When we hold space for other people, we open our hearts,

20

offer unconditional support and let go of judgement and control. Sometimes we find ourselves holding space for people while they hold space for others. In our situation, for example, Ann was holding space for us while we held space for Mom. Though I know nothing about her support system, I suspect that there are others holding space for Ann as she does this challenging and meaningful work. It’s virtually impossible to be a strong space holder unless we have others who will hold space for us. Even the strongest leaders, coaches, nurses, etc., need to know that there are some people with whom they can be vulnerable and weak without fear of being judged. In my own role as teacher, facilitator, coach, mother, wife, friend, etc., I do my best to hold space for other people in the same way that Ann modeled it for me and my siblings. It’s not always easy, because I have a very human tendency to want to fix people, give them

Healthy Living Magazine spring/summer 2015

advice or judge them for not being further along their path than they may be, but I keep trying because I know that it’s important. At the same time, there are people in my life that I trust to hold space for me. To truly support people in their own growth, transformation, grief, etc., we can’t do it by taking their power away (i.e. trying to fix their problems), shaming them (i.e. implying that they should know more than they do), or overwhelming them (i.e. giving them more information than they’re ready for). We have to be prepared to step to the side so that they can make their own choices, offer them unconditional love and support, give gentle guidance when it’s needed and make them feel safe even when they make mistakes. Holding space is not something that’s exclusive to facilitators, coaches or palliative care nurses. It is something that ALL of us can do for each other – for our partners, children, friends, neighbors and even strangers who strike up conversations as we’re riding the bus to work.

decisions for other people (such as when they’re dealing with an addiction and an intervention feels like the only thing that will save them) but, in almost every other case, people need the autonomy to make their own choices (even our children). Ann knew that we needed to feel empowered in making decisions on our mother’s behalf, and so she offered support, but never tried to direct or control us. 4. Keep your own ego out of it. This is a big one. We all get caught in that trap now and then – when we begin to believe that someone else’s success is dependent on our intervention, or when we think that their failure reflects poorly on us, or when we’re convinced that whatever emotions they choose to unload on us are about us instead of them. It’s a trap I’ve occasionally found myself slipping into when I teach. I can become more concerned about my own success (Do the students like me? Do their marks reflect on my ability to teach? etc.) than about the success of my students. But that doesn’t serve anyone – not even me. To truly support their growth, I need to keep my ego out of it and create the space where they have the opportunity to grow and learn.

5. Make them feel safe enough to fail. When people are learning, growing or going through grief or transition, they are bound to make some mistakes along the way. When we, as their space holders, withhold judgement and shame, we offer them the opportunity to reach inside themselves to find the courage to take risks and the resilience to keep going even when they fail. When we let them know that failure is simply a part of the journey and not the end of the world, they’ll spend less time beating themselves up for it and more time learning from their mistakes. 6. Give guidance and help with humility and thoughtfulness. A wise space holder knows when to withhold guidance (when it makes a person feel foolish and inadequate) and when to offer it gently (when a person asks for it or is too lost to know what to ask for). Though Ann did not take our power or autonomy away, she did offer to come and give Mom baths and do some of the more challenging parts of caregiving. This was a relief to us, as we had no practice at it and didn’t want to place Mom in a position that might make her feel shame (such as having her children see her naked). This is a careful Continued on page 22 . . .

Inner Healing

Here are the lessons I’ve learned from Ann and others who have held space for me. 1. Give people permission to trust their own intuition and wisdom. When we were supporting my mother in her final days, we had no experience to rely on, and yet, intuitively, we knew what was needed. We knew how to carry her shrinking body to the washroom, we knew how to sit and sing hymns to her and we knew how to love her. We even knew when it was time to inject the medication that would help ease her pain. In a very gentle way, Ann let us know that we didn’t need to do things according to some arbitrary healthcare protocol – we simply needed to trust our intuition and accumulated wisdom from the many years we’d loved Mom. 2. Give people only as much information as they can handle. Ann gave us some simple instructions and left us with a few handouts, but did not overwhelm us with far more than we could process in our tender time of grief. Too much information would have left us feeling incompetent and unworthy. 3. Don’t take their power away. When we take decision-making power out of people’s hands, we leave them feeling useless and incompetent. There may be some times when we need to step in and make hard

dance that we all must do when we hold space for other people. Recognizing the areas in which they feel most vulnerable and incapable and offering the right kind of help without shaming them takes practice and humility. 7. Create a container for complex emotions, fear, trauma, etc. When people feel that they are held in a deeper way than they are used to, they feel safe enough to allow complex emotions to surface that might normally remain hidden. Someone who is practiced at holding space knows that this can happen and will be prepared to hold it in a gentle, supportive, and nonjudgmental way. In “The Circle Way,” we talk about “holding the rim” for people. The circle becomes the space where people feel safe enough to fall apart without fearing that this will leave them permanently broken or that they will be shamed by others in the room. Someone is always there to offer strength and courage. This is not easy work, and it is work that I continue to learn about as I host increasingly more challenging conversations. We cannot do it if we are overly emotional

ourselves, if we haven’t done the hard work of looking into our own shadow or if we don’t trust the people for whom we are holding space. In Ann’s case, she did this by showing up with tenderness, compassion and confidence. If she had shown up in a way that didn’t offer us assurance that she could handle difficult situations or that she was afraid of death, we wouldn’t have been able to trust her as we did. 8. Allow them to make different decisions and to have different experiences than you would. Holding space is about respecting each person’s differences and recognizing that those differences may lead to them making choices that we would not make. Sometimes, for example, they make choices based on cultural norms that we can’t understand from within our own experience. When we hold space, we release control and we honor differences. This showed up in the way that Ann supported us in making decisions about what to do with Mom’s body after her spirit was no longer housed there. If there had been some ritual that we felt we needed to conduct before releasing

her body, we were free to do that in the privacy of Mom’s home. Holding space is not something that we can master overnight or that can be adequately addressed in a list of tips like the ones I’ve just given. It’s a complex practice that evolves as we practice it, and it is unique to each person and each situation. Unlike traditional chiropractic and physical therapy methods which emphasize routine manipulation of the symptomatic body part, Ian utilizes a distinctive approach by incorporating techniques like Reiki, Craniosacral Therapy, Visceral Manipulation and other forms of soft tissue release. This is what he refers to as “Light Touch” therapy. This diverse blend provides a patient with a therapy flexible enough to address many causes of the symptoms.

We are beings of energy. All of the matter you experience and that which is not experienced by the simple five senses is energy in one form or another. Energy moves and, therefore, we have Tai Chi – movement of energy. Tai Chi is the practice of becoming aware of, enhancing, strengthening and directing one’s own energy and that of the environment around us. Tai Chi Chuan uses energy to

www.myhealthylivingmag.com

defend one’s physical being. However, the practice of Tai Chi form without the intent of martial application is tremendously beneficial to one’s physical, mental, emotional and spiritual well-being, and this is because the awareness of self and energy (Chi) transforms the wholeness of our being. Qi Gong is moving energy in awareness so that it can be manipulated and directed to bring about changes within the organic structures of our physical systems. We have come to know Qi Gong as the healing modality yet the only difference between Tai Chi and Qi Gong is the intent and use of the Chi.

In meditation we are paying attention to ourselves and to the energy systems of our minds, mostly. We don’t often think of thoughts as having energy but they have very strong, powerfully influential energy. Just ask yourself to change a habit or desire and you will experience the strength of mind energy. In martial art application, known as Yi Quan (mind boxing), we harness the power of mind energy to affect ourselves and others. In meditation practice we learn to harness this thought energy to experience ourselves free of desires, needs and old patterns of thought, word and action.

Thinking about taking a vacation this year? Who’s going to take care of your pet while you’re gone? Do you even know where to begin your search for care? In a perfect world, our pets would go almost anywhere with us, but the reality is that you can not always take your pet on vacation with you. Finding the perfect person or place to care for your pet while you are away can mean the difference between a relaxing vacation and a stressed-filled time away from your four-legged loved one. Not all pets can and should be cared for in the same way. They each have specific needs based on species, age, temperament, health and personality. The pet-care industry is so diverse that almost any pet can be properly cared for if you know what you are looking for in a provider. Here are some examples of the various services and accommodations that may be available to you when it is time to pack your bags and get away from it all. Traditional Boarding Kennel A "kennel” is usually a facility that houses dogs, and sometimes even cats, in individual cages or “runs.” A standard “run” is 4-by-8 feet with access to an individual outside area or a common area for fresh air, potty breaks and exercise. A well-run and supervised kennel is usually an affordable and safe accommodation for young, healthy dogs that don’t need a whole lot of “extras” and do not have separation anxiety. Many traditional kennels may provide additional services such as leash walks, playgroups and personal play time for additional fees. Daycare and Boarding Facility Many dog daycares also provide overnight boarding for dogs that are well socialized and enjoy the company

www.myhealthylivingmag.com

of other dogs. These facilities may board the dogs in individual runs or allow groups of dogs to crash together in a common room with an overnight attendant. Group play in a daycare allows the dog plenty of physical and mental stimulation which may help them to rest better at night while you’re away. This service is great for active, healthy, well socialized dogs. Home-style Boarding For pets that need a little more comfort and personal attention, there are pet sitters that can care for your pet in their own home and treat them like one of their own. These caretakers should be carefully interviewed and references should be checked. They should be licensed to do their business out of their home and be completely insured. Make sure the home is clean, safe and that the pets will be well supervised. Most professionals limit the number of pets they have in their care at one time to 5 or 6. This service is great for senior pets, pets with health issues or those that need regular medications. In-home Pet Sitting If your pet prefers the comforts of home, there are professional pet sitters that can come to you house to feed, walk, play with, medicate and even “sleepover” with your pet. Many also offer additional services such as picking up the mail, putting out trash, turning lights on and off and basically making your home look “lived in” while you’re away. Of course, these individuals should be thoroughly checked out and interviewed before you hire them. Insurance is a must and many can also provide you with a CORI report for additional peace of mind. Once you have decided what level of care your pet should have, how do you choose which company to use? The best advice is to ask all of

your like-minded, pet-loving friends, relatives and neighbors for suggestions and also check with your veterinarian. Interview the sitters, visit the facilities and ask plenty of questions! Finding an individual or company that you feel comfortable with is vital to you and your pets all having a well-deserved vacation.
