Freedom camping on Independent Tours

What is Freedom camping?

Freedom camping is the ultimate outdoor experience. Just you, your fellow travellers and nature. It means you won’t have to worry about plugging your campervan into power, and you can really explore New Zealand’s beautiful, legal camping grounds. You’ll have the comforts and facilities of your motorhome, with uninterrupted, stunning views of the great outdoors.

There are districts in New Zealand that do not permit you to freedom camp. These areas may or may not be clearly sign posted so we recommend you always check with a local first. Visitor Information Centres or ‘iSites’ will always be able to advise you.

Department of Conservation (DOC) Campsites

These are often in some of the best locations around the country – in national parks, alongside the Great Walks and in tranquil and secluded spots. The campsites are usually quite basic, offering ‘back to nature’ style accommodation and facilities and very reasonably priced.

There are six categories of DOC campsites: Serviced campsites – include a wide range of amenities with flush toilets, kitchen/cooking facilities, hot showers and rubbish collection. These campsites can be booked at a DOC visitor centre.

Scenic campsites – Usually in high-use, coastal locations, these campsites have toilets and tap water supply and often barbecues, cold showers and rubbish bins. Some scenic campsites can be booked in advance.

Standard campsites – Limited range of amenities including a pit or composting toilet, a water supply and some may have cold showers, barbecue and rubbish facilities. These campsites generally cannot be booked.

Basic campsites – You really need to be self-sufficient to stay at these campsites with basic toilet facilities and water from a tank, lake or stream. Basic campsites generally cannot be booked.

Backcountry campsites – Usually have toilets and a water supply from a stream. They may also have basic cooking facilities and picnic tables. These campsites generally cannot be booked.

Great Walk campsites – There are 60 Great Walk campsites situated along all Great Walk tracks (except Milford) and they offer basic facilities including toilets and a water supply. Bookings are usually required and can be completed online.

The areas in the outback are often rest areas – keep your eyes open, as some of these have a part which opens up behind the rest area, so you can get further off the road. Sometimes these might be beside a river, or overlooking a nice view.

Campsite Options

In addition to the many catered and self-catered places to stay in Southern Africa, there are hundreds of camping, campervan and motorhome sites that are in or near popular nature reserves, wildlife parks and famous landscapes, tourist attractions, tour routes and the gorgeous coastline that stretches for thousands of kilometres.

The smell of the bush, the sound of animals calling, light as it casts its yellow glow over the savannah, the crisp morning air, and the warm rays of the African sun. There are few better ways to get really close to the Southern African outdoors than by pitching a tent or setting up a campervan or motorhome in the heart of this raw beauty.

There are basic camp sites, where visitors come to enjoy the serenity of the outdoors without the hustle and bustle of city life. Some of these have electricity and ablutions available, while others are more rustic, little more than a clearing in the verdant vegetation. On the other side of the spectrum, there are luxurious tented camps, where tents stand on raised platforms and boast king-sized beds, inviting linen, mosquito nets, and electricity. Affectionately dubbed ‘glamping’, this is a real treat for those that want to enjoy the camping experience with a touch of the glamour and convenience that comes with modern living.

The majority of campsites offer powered sites for campervans and motorhomes. The shared bathrooms and toilets at campsites are often basic but usually well attended to. Easy access to shared kitchen and bathroom facilities is generally available on these sites. The majority of campsites offer a private barbeque facility where campfires are permitted. Some sites even offer a private ablution and small kitchen wash-up facility.

Many campsites in Southern Africa form part of a hotel or lodge and campers may utilise lodge facilities such as restaurants, swimming pools and laundry facilities.

Some of the most popular camping destinations in Southern Africa include the Kruger National Park and the Garden Route in South Africa, Sossusvlei and Etosha National Park in Namibia and the beautiful Chobe National Park in northern Botswana.

The Southern African camping experience is a truly special one. Whatever your preference, Southern Africa has something for everyone, and you will find yourself planning your next camping trip even before you have concluded your Southern African holiday and returned home.

Weather

Despite Canada’s size, weather patterns are mostly the same across the country, with defined seasons similar to those in Europe. Coastal regions are usually more temperate than prairie provinces and mountain ranges attract higher rainfall and snow in some areas than others. It’s cold everywhere in winter and warm in most locations in summer. The summer months offer sunny days and pleasant temperatures. Springtime reveals forests and wildflowers and the re-emergence of Canadian wildlife from winter hibernation. September is the peak of the salmon run, attracting large numbers of bears. It also marks the start of autumn, with spectacular fall foliage lasting into October.

• Usually larger pitches with more privacy

• Often they will not offer any hook-ups and at best only offer a partial hook-up

• There are minimum amenities and often there are no showers or flush toilets

• It is unlikely that there will be a mobile phone signal or Wi-Fi

Private Campgrounds

• Are mainly located outside of Provincial, State and National Parks

• They can be in nature but are mostly close to a town or city, and are close to activities

Itinerary

Days 1 – 3: UK – Las Vegas

Arrive into Las Vegas in the early evening and watch the city as it comes to life with its famous neon lights, Vegas has got to be seen to be believed with each hotel seeming like a destination in its own right.

Days 4 – 5: Kingman (171 km / 107 miles)

Transfer to the Las Vegas motorhome depot for a full orientation session before you hit the road. Start your journey via Lake Mead and the impressive Hoover Dam. From there, you’ll encounter your first taste of the old west in Chloride, home of the oldest silver mining camp in Arizona.

Days 6 – 7: Grand Canyon National Park (275 km / 172 miles)

Cruise in the shadow of the Aquarius and Juniper Mountains as you head towards one of the ‘Seven Wonders of the World’ – The Grand Canyon. Just over an hour outside of Kingman, you’ll encounter another Route 66 gem – Seligman. Home of the Roadkill Café, it’s an Arizona institution and a great stop for breakfast.

Days 8 – 9: Lake Powell (214 km / 134 miles)

Drive to Lake Powell, a man-made reservoir on the Colorado River which straddles the border between Arizona and Utah. The amazing backdrop of dramatic red rock against the shimmering water is breathtaking.

Days 10 – 11: Monument Valley 195 km / 122 miles)

Rise early and journey east to Monument Valley, where monolithic sandstone rocks rise up to 1,000 feet from the desert floor. Feeling a bit of déjà vu? The valley has been used as a setting for countless Western movies since the 1940s, so it’s bound to feel familiar.

Days 12 – 13: Moab & Arches National Park (234 km / 146 miles)

Enjoy wall-to-wall scenery on your way to Moab, set in the heart of Utah’s dramatic Canyonlands. Most of Utah lies on a plateau 4,000 feet above sea level. Explore Arches and Canyonlands National Parks, as well as the lesser-known but equally magnificent Dead Horse State Park. Excursions including white water rafting along the Colorado River, or a 4x4 jeep tour deep into canyon country can be arranged.

Days 14 – 15: Capitol Reef National Park (250 km / 156 miles)

Be sure to include Goblin State Park along your way today as you travel to Capitol Reef National Park. The strange and colourful landscape is full of strange rock formations that resemble a huge gathering of goblins!

Days 16 – 17: Bryce Canyon National Park (174 km / 109 miles)

Drive via one of America’s most dramatic routes – Highway 12 National Scenic Byway. The road is very narrow at the top, twisting through Dixie National Forest and across Boulder Mountain which exceeds 11,000 ft. and is the highest timbered plateau in North America.

Days 18 – 19: Zion National Park (139 km / 87 miles)

Continue on the scenic byway all the way to Zion, Utah’s oldest national park. Once in Zion, you’ll understand why a writer experiencing the park once commented, ‘It is here that the grandeur of the natural form unites with brilliancy of colour.’ From sunrise to sunset, the changing scenes pass before you in extraordinary hues.

Day 20: Las Vegas (264 km / 165 miles)

Today you should consider taking a slight detour and take a gentle drive through the flaming colours of Valley of the Fire State Park, Nevada. Continue on to Las Vegas for your final night in your RV.

Campsite Options

Campgrounds are a major part of any motorhome holiday in the USA and whether you like to plan every aspect of your holiday or prefer the freedom to plan as you go, you will need to know where you can find campgrounds.

USA Campsites

There are thousands of campgrounds situated throughout the United States of America, made up of independents and franchises and below is a selection of links to the major Camp Ground & RV Park websites in the US:

National Park Service

America’s National Parks boast some of the finest campgrounds in the country. nps.gov/subjects/camping/campground.htm

State Parks USA

America’s State Parks also have beautiful campgrounds and are similar to those in the National Parks. stateparks.com

GoRVing

A great platform to help you find your RV campground and lots more. gorving.com/where-to-find/campgrounds

Reserve America

One of the leading online providers for campsite reservations at campgrounds across the USA. reserveamerica.com

Woodall’s

Find your US campgrounds by state. camping-usa.com/campgrounds

KOA

Kampgrounds Of America are found across the USA and are known for their high quality standards. koa.com/find-a-koa

Free Campgrounds

For bargain-hunters, is a list of places where you can camp for free or nearly free. rvtravel.com/free-and-cheap-rv-camping/

As a minimum we recommend you pre-book at least your first night in advance as this will give you peace of mind as to where you are going. Most Americans travel to campgrounds over weekends and bank holidays so we strongly recommend prebooking your campgrounds in advance during these periods and during peak times.

When booking your campgrounds, we recommend booking a ‘pull through site’ as this will allow you to drive in one end and pull out the other when you leave.

Full ‘Hook Ups’ allows you to connect to Mains water, Mains Electricity (powers the roof air conditioner and plug sockets) and waste.

Please be aware that campgrounds in more rural areas may not have all amenities.
