SHIKOKU

Tell me about the fascination of Shikoku!

Blessed with a warm climate, Shikoku is a treasure island where you can enjoy untouched natural beauty of the sea, mountains, and rivers including the Shimanto River, the last undammed river in Japan and the secluded region of Iya. You can find a peaceful and warm culture of hospitality rooted here: the Shikoku Pilgrimage with its 1200 years of history, historic townscape where you can interact with people preserving the classic way of life, and local cuisine using the fresh ingredients to the full.

A

FAQ on First Visit to Shikoku FA Clear up any simple questions about Shikoku before your trip, and plan an itinerary that suits your interests perfectly!

q

What’s there for sightseeing in Shikoku?

2014 marks the 1200th anniversary of the initial opening of the Shikoku Pilgrimage. In recent years, this pilgrimage is seeing increase in walkers from overseas as well. People who have walked “Way of Saint James (El Camino de Santiago)” in Spain also visit this Shikoku Pilgrimage too. Also, a friendship agreement was formed with the Korean Jeju Island Walking Group “Jeju Olle”, and the exchanges and interaction of people has begun setting the former pilgrim trails with ancient natural trails as a “friendship trail”.

A

When is the best season to visit?

q

March to April when the cherry blossom front moves from southwest to northeast, and November when the autumn leaves front moves from north to south are both ideal times to visit with great climate. Its characteristic is also defined by beautiful seasonally blooming flowers and lush vegetation.

A

q

Is Shikoku famous for art?

Shikoku is dotted with highlights of art. The island also features a museum of architecture which is designed by the Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Toyo Ito, a garden replicating Monet’s paintings in Kitagawa Village called Monet’s Garden Marmottan, and many other art attractions. It’s also worth a look at the collection of life-sized reproductions of world-famous artworks printed on ceramic boards at the Otsuka Museum of Art (→P.19).

A

q

How many days do I need for a Shikoku tour?

At least three nights and four days are needed in order to enjoy the fascination of the four prefectures of Shikoku as much as possible. If you can, arrive the night before to allow for five days trip, then you can fully enjoy Shikoku with plenty of time to spare for traveling.

A

→ P.11

q

How can I get there from Tokyo, Osaka, Hiroshima, or Fukuoka?

Choose toppings

Add the broth

There are over thirty toppings to choose, from mixed vegetable tempura to squid leg tempura. A single stick of fish paste tempura is very filling.

11:10 Add seasonings

Which one should I have?

Put the noodles in a strainer called a tebo, and warm them briefly (5 to 10 seconds) in the hot water, drain the water, and put them back to the bowl. Watch and copy what others do.

11:12

Top your noodles with green onions, ginger, tempura crunchy bits, and more as you like. If you put too much, you’ll be missing out on the delicate flavor of the broth so season in moderation.

Pour broth into your bowl from the tap on the tank and voila! Here is your self-serve udon. Take care not to spill on the way to your seat.

Eat “Kake udon”, served with fragrant small sardine broth is the standard Sanuki Udon dish. Eat it piping hot with a slurp in a dynamic way.

Eating “Sanuki Udon” is a must in Kagawa! In Kagawa, there are approximately 800 to 900 udon restaurants, making it what people call the udon prefecture. Each restaurant has its own ordering system and there are lots of different styles, so master the basics before you go.

Ordering Glossary Kake

●かけ

Hot noodles in broth. The orthodox udon.

Kamaage ●釜揚げ Noodles are served in the hot water used for boiling, and dipped in a side of broth for eating.

Ordinary Restaurants

This restaurant offers style just as common ones, where staff will come to your seat to take your order. Pay after you eat.

Before sitting down, go to the counter to order and pay for your food, then bring your food to your seat yourself. After eating, return your dishes to a designated place. There are precise other rules that differ from restaurant to restaurant, so

Kochi people are well-known for their love of good drink, and they have fun with lively atmosphere at banquets. One popular game is called bekuhai, where people spin a top, and whoever the shaft of the top is pointing at when it stops spinning has to drink out of the mask that shows on the top. It s a great game for people who love to drink. Unique bekuhai sets with mask-shaped cups are popular souvenir items.

Iya Sightseeing Highlight The Secret Story of the Iya Kazura Bridge

he Kazura Bridge in Iya, home of the legend of a Heike fugitive clan, has long been a place where the sad story of the Heike clan is told. It is said that kazura bridges, strung across a deep gorge, were built by the Heike clan approximately 800 years ago when they escaped to Iya after losing the battle at Yashima to the Minamoto clan, and the bridges were made of natural kazura vines so that they could be cut down quickly if the clan had to make an escape from pursuers. In those days, many bridges were used as a part of common pathways, but now they are only located in two places, Iya and Oku-Iya, and preserved for sightseeing purposes. The Iya Kazura Bridge is a nationally designated important tangible folk-cultural asset, and in February of 2012, the bridge was rebuilt as it is once every three years. The Niju-kazura two vine bridges in Oku-Iya, the man s bridge and woman s bridge, was rebuilt in April 2012.
