Pez, “fish” in Spanish, started to paint in 1999 on the outskirts of Barcelona. At first he used to write his signature, and soon it evolved into a fish. Pez, empezó a pintar en el año 1999 en las calles de Barcelona. Al principio lo usaba solo como tag, pero más tarde lo convirtió en un pez.

When did you start this? Why? I started in 1999, I had a need to go out and show everyone what Iwas doing and bring my two cents to the movement.

Why a fish? Some friends gave me that nickname, it seemed affectionate and I started testing out ideas with the letters... In a day of inspiration I created a logo/tag that was original and seem to be good enough to bombard the city with. In a few months this logo/tag became my character and I started to bomb with the signature logo. You are an icon for Barcelona and Spain, do you receive this recognition from the movement? The truth is that if I have many friends and acquaintances within the guild that always convey good vibrations.

PEZ INTERVIEW

Do you have a reference on your beginnings? In the beginning I started making tags, as well as a tag with half my logo. This signature showed a was a mixture between a fish and the word fish. I soon realized this was more my character and that I could paint more than a few letters, I enjoyed watching my character jump on the walls. I would sit on any wall and laugh at everyone who passed by in front of it.

Chicago 1976, MUL crew

Uno de los pilares o el director dentro del movimiento graffitero de Chicago.

Introduce yourself as if nobody knew. I write C3PO and come from the Made U Look crew out of Chicago. How old were you when you started taking an interest in graffiti? And to paint? I started writing graffiti pretty early. My older brother was already writing in high school, at the height of the graffiti wave in the early 90s. This was before the internet and before all the traveling. Graffiti magazines roamed the earth. It was the time when graffiti started its second renaissance and built the foundations of what we call graffiti today.

What’s your favourite surface? My favourite surface has to be steel (trains). There is something about how the paint covers and sticks to it. What do you think the current scene (graffiti)? Graffiti is always evolving and changing. There are some cool things happening right now. There are definitely guys out there that are pushing the limits with the scope of how they’re bombing. There are guys out there putting in serious work and risking their freedom. You know, keeping on with the mission. On the legal shit, there are all kinds of dudes bringing nice design elements to their graff and making real innovations and taking full advantage of the new paints and tools now available to them. I think when the art is on the next level, the overall culture benefits as a whole. Define your style. I have a traditional letter style. Style is subjective, but if I had to define myself, it probably falls into the world of emphasizing the simple lines and basic understanding of structure. Throw-ups, tags and pieces should be able to stand up on their own. What are your references? I have been writing graff for more than 20 years now. I am well-respected as a mainstay and director of the Chicago graffiti movement. I made an early and consistent name for myself mostly from my work done on the transit system. I am also currently a contributor in the scene Rocking Walls, and as one of the unofficial ambassadors of Chicago. How is the movement for Chicago? Chicago right now. For the past 30 years it has been consistently producing quality writers, bombers and piecers. The quality of work that is coming out of Chicago is crazy! Chicago is one of the best graffiti-producing cities in the states.

Pretending to accept the graffiti without the essence of illegality is to misunderstand its basic cause of production.

ATMOSPHERE INTERVIEW

A prominent theme in Slug’s lyrics is his allegorical usage of women, especially in his earlier work. A notable use of women by Slug is in the song “Woman with the Tattooed Hands”, which Slug has said is “a metaphor for that same stuff that everybody has already made songs about”.
