Chas Luchford, Sales Director As part of Canford’s growth plans for
2015 we opened our first office in Dubai and the response from our customers working in the region has been fantastic. Although we have been operating successfully in the region for over 20 years we now have a new dedicated sales office supporting our customers, whether locally based in the GCC or UK / European customers working in the Middle East. In 2016 we will be celebrating our 40th Anniversary, who could have imagined the changes in the Broadcast sector in that time period. We are now seeing convergence with IT, Commercial AV and Broadcast coming together, with new challenges of IP Networking and many systems moving towards software solutions and cloud storage. During 2015 and I am sure continuing in 2016 we are also seeing an increasing demand for Fibre systems where higher speeds and greater bandwidth are required. Our investments for 2016 include a Fibre Termination facility to enable fast, efficient terminations to support you with your ongoing applications. Many of you may not be aware, that Canford manufactures 40% of the products we supply, currently operating out of two UK manufacturing sites at Washington (Tyne & Wear) and Portland (Dorset) providing bespoke customer solutions to meet your specific application. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your business in 2015 and we look forward to supporting you in 2016. Programme Making & Special Events
(PMSE) – Wireless Mics and In-Ear Monitors – Current UK Licensing Situation In general, it can be stated that most PMSE wireless audio devices require some form of licence in order that the user, for it is the users’ responsibility, conforms to the WT (Wireless Telegraphy) Act. Licensing terms, however, vary depending on the area of spectrum that the piece or pieces of PMSE equipment is or are operating in; and at what output power. Spectrum Option 1 - 470-606 MHz The vast majority of wireless microphones and in-ear monitors operate in what is referred to as the UHF Band. Currently, this band starts at 470 MHz and extends up to 790 MHz. 470 to 606 MHz is commonly referred to as interleaved spectrum. The primary user is broadcast, using multiple 8 MHz blocks to deliver Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) multiplexes to peoples’ TV antennas, be they rooftop, or located indoors – PMSE is classed as a secondary user. However, at any one given geographical location not all of the 8 MHz channels are used creating ‘gaps’, which are referred to as interleaved frequencies or TV White Space. Furthermore, the pattern of DTT usage of spectrum differs across the UK and so, accordingly, the pattern of available usable TV whitespace frequencies for PMSE varies around the country, too. This goes some way to explaining why PMSE systems have tuning ranges, as a frequency that might be available and usable in for example, Brighton, might not be available in Newcastle. Interleaved frequencies are the best choice for fixed installations or for professional touring applications, however, to remain within the law their use must be licenced, wherever they are used. The frequencies are licenced on a ‘where, when and for how long’ basis and apply to each frequency or an entire 8 MHz band. As previously mentioned, the responsibility for licensing rests with the user – fines and confiscation of equipment potentially await users who fail to do the right thing.
Spectrum Option 2 - Channel 38 – 606-614 MHz 606 MHz to 614 MHz is an 8 MHz channel that, in theory at least, is kept clear for PMSE use across the whole of the UK. This situation is unique to the UK, so users who are looking to take their equipment abroad should be aware of this fact.
4 | Source Material by Canford
Channel 38 is strictly off-limits in other countries. Licensing for channel 38 differs to the licensing for interleaved spectrum in that the licence takes the form of a shared licence. One licence can cover multiple pieces of PMSE kit and users are expected to coordinate frequency use with each other. A one off annual cost of around £80 keeps the user of this band legal for one year across the whole country.
Spectrum Option 3 – 614-790 MHz Licensing terms are identical to Spectrum Option 1.
Spectrum Option 4 – 863-865 MHz Often referred to as ‘channel 70’; in reality, just 2 MHz of channel 70 are available for ‘wireless audio applications’, which can include wireless microphones. The attraction is that the spectrum is licence exempt – no licence required, therefore no associated costs. The downside is that it has to be shared with all manner of other audio devices, so inter device interference can be an issue. It is also just 1 MHz away from the new 4G phone networks so interference from mobile user equipment could significantly increase, over time. Bottom line, it’s a free for all in there. Traditionally, for the last 15 years or so, the above frequency bands have been the core bands for PMSE use. However, recently other bands have been made available, although, as guard bands between mobile phone networks, their usability, in terms of freedom from out of band emissions (interference) from those networks, has yet to be fully established. The two bands in question are 821-832 MHz and 1785-1805 MHz. Both of these bands were mandated for PMSE use by the European Commission in the middle of 2015. They are not licence exempt bands, hence licences are required – at least, that is, in the UK. Another band that is increasingly being utilised for wireless audio links is the 2.4 GHz band, the same band that is used by Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. As with 863-865 MHz, licence exempt use is permitted, but the users’ audio links have to slug it out with a whole host of other users. The issuing of PMSE licenses was recently taken back in-house at Ofcom UK and further details can be found here: https://pmse.ofcom.org.uk/Pmse/Ecom/LoginPage.aspx

IBC 2015 Best Of Show Award, PSNEurope Designed to be safely worn by athletes participating in major contact sports like rugby, the new QT-5100 PlayerMic wireless transmitters from Q5X will withstand the huge shocks generated during full speed collisions on the playing field. The miniature, remote controllable transmitters are only 42mm wide, 9mm thick and are available in two lengths - 78mm and 99mm. Operating times are 4 and 8 hours respectively at 50 mW transmit power. QT-5100 PlayerMic transmitters have a rubberised, water resistant casing with two flexible antennas and a flying lead for attaching a microphone. The transmitter is typically worn inside a pocket stitched into the back of a sports compression vest and the mic is taped to the front of the vest. The team shirt hides the audio system. Using a handheld QG-H1 MicCommander wireless remote control, Q5X PlayerMics can be remotely configured. Programmable features include mic on/standby, battery check, mic gain, transmitter power and RF channel selection. Once the player is mic’d up, controlling the transmitter settings remotely avoids disturbing the athlete’s concentration. “The practice of putting mics on athletes has become well established in the USA, Australia and Canada,” commented Product Manager, Mike Reay “And that concept has been generating a great deal of excitement among UK broadcasters who want to bring an extra dimension to the audience’s involvement by transporting them right into the heart of the action.” Winning the Best Of Show award from Pro Sound News Europe at IBC was a great endorsement for the efforts of the Q5X design team who have produced a remarkably versatile transmitter in a tiny package.

SPOILSPORTS – OR The case for SAVIOURS? headphone limiters.
Why do we want to ‘limit’ your headphone listening experience? Well, we don’t BUT there’s a strong link between listening to high level sound – however desirable – and long term hearing problems. The precise mechanisms are still not fully understood and vary from individual to individual but the evidence is sufficiently strong for legislators to have imposed legal constraints on the level of sound to which an employee may be exposed. Early versions of such law were aimed at obvious risk areas, such as mines, quarries and heavy industries like steel and shipbuilding. Later, despite arguments about the nature of ‘noise’ itself, the risks inherent in environments occupied by professional musicians and office workers were brought within the legislation. In the early 1980s, the introduction of the ‘Walkman’ type of personal music player – the forerunner of the now ubiquitous personal listening devices – led to consideration
of whether extended headphone listening could lead to similar levels of sound exposure as the more ‘traditional’ culprits. The conclusion was that such exposure could, and should, be treated as an equivalent risk and this led to investigation of mechanisms to mitigate this risk. One obvious professional use of headphones is in broadcasting and the BBC designs department was asked to look at the issue of headphone volume limiting in the early 1980s (coincidence?). Headphone limiters installed and calibrated by Canford rely heavily on that early BBC work but with continued development and (hopefully) improvement. Whilst the design seeks to minimise impact on the quality of the listening experience, it has to be remembered that the object is to provide organisations with the means to mitigate the risk of long-term hearing issues amongst the employees, whose jobs now include call centres, security and surveillance in addition to the broadcasters.

Technical know how
Canford Techzone A lot of information can be gleaned from our web site – you just need to know where to look really. In the menu bar at the top of the screen, on the home page, is a tab called Techzone. A click here produces a wealth of information under four headings:
1. Cables 2. Connectors
3. Regulations & Standards 4. Miscellaneous
Many topics are covered – here are just a few:
Maximum Transmission Distances
Mains Distribution Selection Tool
“I need to send 3G Digital Video signal over 50m – what cable will do that?”
So you’ve got your new rack and lots of equipment to put in it. Now for a Mains Distribution Unit – but which one – there are over 200 on the web site…...!! Never fear – an active table is at your disposal.
Have a look at this section for the answer. Look under the first of the two columns headed 3G. Underneath is a list of distances associated with our range of Canford and Belden cables. SDV will handle 50m under all conditions. In most situations there is even some spare capacity as we have a conservative approach to maximum lengths for operational use.
Radio Mics Radio Mic frequencies have long been a source of much confusion. Hopefully a look here will help. Basically you need to decide on your requirements: Q) “I am worried about possible local interference from other radio mic users?” A) Use Channel 38 - you will need a license from Ofcom. Q) “Is my use of radio mics quite small and are there no other users near bye?” A) Use Channel 70 and save money as you do not need a license.
At the top are eight filter boxes. Just click on the arrow in each box and select your requirement. The total list gradually reduces with each filter selection making your choice of MDU much simpler. If you want to start again then just reset the filters by clicking on the top of column one.
Cable Drum Capacity Calculator Long cables should be kept on cable drums to protect them and to provide ease of use in operation. This active table allows you to insert figures for cable diameter, cable length and weight. Hitting “Calculate” will highlight in green a range of suitable drums. They come in different styles – click on the appropriate stock-code for full details.
These are just a few of the topics covered. Scan the QR code to visit the Techzone page and see how it can help YOU! www.canford.co.uk/Technical/ Call UK sales on +44(0)191 418 1122 or email sales@canford.co.uk

NEW CHALLENGES John Slider, Canford CEO
Born just after the Second World War I entered industry in 1962 as a young apprentice engineer and was completely oblivious to the challenges facing many industries. That era was known as the “Swinging Sixties” and it was a great time to be young and filled with the exuberance and optimism of youth. The UK had emerged from the War as an industrial giant with manufacturing as its bedrock and UK manufacturers completely dominated the domestic market and were also hugely successful in the export arena. Unfortunately successive UK governments failed to grasp the challenges that lay ahead for the manufacturing industries especially in the unproductive nationalised industries and sadly we witnessed the decline and devastation of once great industries such as Coal, Steel and Shipbuilding. The lessons to be learned are that no matter how successful you or your company are you must prepare and plan for the challenges that will surely come.
I believe we are facing several crisis that can and will have an impact on the way future business is conducted Fifty years on I am now in the twilight of my career and can say in all honesty that the “new challenges” we all face today are totally different 12 | Source Material by Canford
from those in my past. I believe we are facing several crisis that can and will have an impact on the way future business is conducted. The first crisis is one of an economic nature. We all know that growth especially in Europe has been dismal but the sad fact is there seems to be no respite as all indicators suggest this will continue for the foreseeable future. The decision taken many years ago to introduce a common currency without a common fiscal policy has been disastrous and you only need to look at the situation in Greece to realise the effects it is having on the markets. The second crisis and one that has impacted many UK and German companies is the political situation in Russia and it is clear that they will not give up on Crimea hence incurring the wrath of the West with sanctions hitting both economies. The third crisis and one that worries me the most is to coin David Cameron’s words “the swarm of migrants” from the troubled Middle East. One or two countries such as Germany have shown willing to open their borders but frankly speaking the numbers entering is just not sustainable. Now if you consider the above three points you can only have concerns for the future as
Call UK sales on +44(0)191 418 1122 or email sales@canford.co.uk
there does not seem a willingness on the part of the European nations to cooperate in solving the issues. Quite apart from the economic issues that we are dealing with we also need to consider the terrible impact that terrorism is having on business with the slaughter of innocent people in Tunisia, the bombing that took place in Istanbul, the downing of a Russian airliner and the most recent tragic events in Paris. Having just returned from a business trip to Turkey I can say that apart from these events impacting the tourist industries there is a very deep concern within the business community that the lack of border controls will lead to jihadists finding an easy route into the countries of Europe spreading their poison and disrupting everyday life that will in turn hurt an already depressed economy. And what of our friends across the pond whose actions precipitated many of the crisis facing Europe today? They have not only a strategic interest but also a moral duty to assist Europe in its hour of need. Will they “step up to the plate”, only time will tell. For the strategists among you, you will know that wisdom and experience tells us to concentrate on the things where we can exert some control. I hope you would agree that what I have mentioned so far is well beyond the control of any normal trading company.
There is no doubt that the traditional Broadcast industry is in a state of transition which is creating uncertainty and a reluctance for companies to invest. Hardware sales have been declining for some time whilst we see a growth toward software solutions. There is also a move towards the commercial AV and IT markets and this means broadcast companies need to review not only their product portfolios but also their skills sets. Fibre technology although not new by any means is being embraced by the industry which is creating opportunities for some companies whilst posing a real threat for others.
Broadcast companies need to review not only their product portfolios but also their skills sets One thing that I can say with certainty is that Canford is reviewing every aspect of its business from product offerings, technical competencies to internal skill set requirements for the future and unlike those giant industries of the sixties Canford will plan and prepare to meet and embrace the “new challenges” of the future.
So what are the challenges we face where we can actually influence matters?

DANTE AUDIO NETWORKING
An overview
Intended primarily for use in professional and commercial audio environments, DANTE is a combination of hardware and software used to transport multi-channel, digital audio over a standard Ethernet network, developed by Audinate Pty. Ltd. Audinate licence other manufacturers to use the DANTE system, so as a result, there are (as of Autumn 2015) over 500 products with integrated DANTEcompatible hardware, from over 170 manufacturers.

FIBRE
(OR FIBER)
By Dave Holloway Lynx Technik (UK) Limited
OPTIC TECHNOLOGY An introduction As fibre becomes more common within AV, audio and broadcast systems it is important to understand the basics of the technology and terminology. The benefits in certain circumstances are clear. By converting electronic signals to laser light and guiding them through a glass fibre core it is possible to transmit them over far greater distances than would be possible with copper cable, whilst also making them immune to EMC and RFI interference. Additionally, multiple signals, of mixed formats if required, can be carried by a single fibre in both directions simultaneously. Reducing weight, bulk and installation time. Multimode and Singlemode There are two basic types of fibre optic transmission, Multimode and Singlemode. It is a common misconception that Multimode can carry multiple data signals and Singlemode only one, but the reverse is actually the case. The terms refer to the way in which the light is emitted and travels through the fibre. From the outside both fibre and connector types look identical although the jackets will be marked and colour-coded to indicate the type. They can, but should not be inter-mated. Multimode systems use a low power, 850nm or 1300nm wavelength LED for slower data rate LANS, or a low cost/ spec lasers for Gigabit speed LANS. Both produce multiple rays, or modes, with a wide bandwidth that ricochet from side to side as they travel down a 50um diameter (OM2, OM3, OM4) fibre. (A 62.5um MM fibre design is now all but obsolete.) MM suffers from high losses as a result of leakage through the cladding around the glass and data errors due to phase delays between the rays, known as dispersion. Transmission distances are severely limited and depend on the data rate, typically 100m at 10Gb/s up to 4km at 2Mb/s.
Multimode
16 | Source Material by Canford
Singlemode systems however use higher power singlemode lasers emitting light with tightly controlled wavelengths in bands between 1270 and 1610nm, in 20nm increments (CWDM system.) These are fired straight down a 9um (OS1, OS2) fibre (occasionally referred to as 8um.) Singlemode signals suffer significantly lower losses through leakage and negligible phase distortion resulting in fewer bit errors. CWDM optical transmitters can be specified to achieve distances of 10km, 40km or 80Km. The vast majority of new equipment and systems use singlemode technology, as the bandwidth is almost infinite with a practical limit of 200k Gb/s!
Singlemode
What is CWDM? CWDM stands for Course Wavelength Division Multiplexing and is a process of combining several optical signals of different tightly defined wavelengths in a singlemode fibre link. Because laser lights of different wavelengths do not interfere with each other, up to 18 ‘beams’ can be combined into a single fibre using optical multiplexers/de-multiplexers. MUX/De-MUX units consist of a series of refractive filters to combine or separate the light colours; much like a prism splits ‘white’ light into its a rainbow constituents.
They are usually passive and bidirectional. This is not a multiplex in the single-direction interlaced datacom sense, but a simultaneous transmission of all the wavelengths, so Call UK sales on +44(0)191 418 1122 or email sales@canford.co.uk
light can be transmitted along a single fibre in both directions simultaneously. The wavelength bands are tightly controlled so crosstalk is avoided. The tight tolerance is the main difference between CWDM and non-CWDM or the cruder WDM lasers, neither of which can be multiplexed. (However LYNX Bi-directional WDM modules can be muxed in special circumstances.) The ‘course’ in CWDM indicates the light bandwidth rather than the tolerance.
Which SFP to chose? Typically the SFPs plug into sockets accessible from the outside of the equipment (always in the case of LYNX products) making it very simple to select and install the desired wavelength unit, and convenient to change configurations or wavelengths if required. CWDM SFP modules are more expensive than the nonCWDM versions so if only a single channel, point-to-point, fibre link is required up to 10km a non-CWDM is the lower cost option. For single channel transmission up to 40km or 80km a higher power CWDM SFP should be used. In both cases the wavelength chosen would typically be 1310 or 1550nm. For all multiplexed multi-channel, mono or bi-directional systems, a selection of CWDM SFPs of different wavelengths, with either 40km or 80km capability, must be used. SFP fibre receivers have a broad input range typically 1260 to 1620nm and thus support all 18 wavelengths, so it’s not necessary to specify wavelengths for fibre receivers.
What is an SFP? LYNX and most other audio, broadcast and AV equipment use proprietary (frequently own-branded) SFP (Small Formfactor Pluggable) modules to convert the electronic signal to light and vice versa. Irritatingly there is no Standard to which all SFPs are manufactured although many conform to the MSA (Multiple Source Agreement) Group design specification, so it is strongly advised that both the electronic unit and the SFP are sourced from the same manufacturer to ensure correct electrical connection.
For a fuller introduction to fibre and CWDM fibre please download the pdf Fiber Primer and CWDM Primer from the LYNX Technik section of the Canford website. SPOTLIGHT ON CANFORD
PORTLAND By Gavin Drake, Production Manager
The name Canford Audio expectedly for most brings to mind the main operation based in Washington, Tyne and Wear. It therefore still comes as a surprise to some that for the past 16 years the group has manufactured all of its own metalwork products from an 11,000 square foot factory situated close to a cliff top in a former Naval base on the Isle of Portland in Dorset! When the group purchased Swift Precision based at the site back in 1999 it was always intended that the acquisition would be a further expansion of the group commitment to the design and manufacture of its own product ranges. From the initial re-design of the now market leading Canford 3G MUSA connectors to the introduction of our extensive range of 19 termination panels and accessories we have from the start listened to our customers and delivered the products they wanted. At a fairly early stage in development it became clear that service and quality was also going to be key to our success and that the most effective way to control this was to bring much of the process in house. With a high level of investment in the site over a number of years we now boast of a plant list which includes a full sheet metal workshop, three CNC vertical machining centres, a powder coating suite and extensive assembly facilities. Though very much a part of the Canford family another significant decision was to make the site largely autonomous from the main operation in Washington which meant we could locally manage our own resourcing, stocking levels and planning. Effectively this created a focused specialist cell within the main organisation that was dedicated to satisfying the demand for both
standard product and customised solutions. Direct customer contact, in the UK and internationally, was also critical and would allow us to build strong relationships and confidence in our capability. Without any doubt the most important factor over the past 16 years has been the support of our dedicated staff on site. The majority of the team have been with us from the beginning which brings with it a significant depth of knowledge and experience relating to both products and customers. Coupled with this is the fact that they have witnessed how the business has grown and developed directly from our commitment to delivering quality product and consistently meeting even the tightest deadlines. The result is a real pride in what they have achieved to date which is reflected very much in their work, attitude and culture. Taking into consideration all of the above it come as no surprise that we are now the preferred source for many of the major Broadcast/AV Systems Integrators both in the UK and globally when it comes to standard or customised metalwork solutions. We equally have a very strong presence with many smaller installers and end users. Our reputation is built not only around the capability to supply 8,000 fully assembled 19 panels to one customer in 6 weeks but also the belief that a single product required quickly for a small project is just as critical. Developing the local capability on Portland to accommodate both ends of this spectrum was the aim at the outset and as a team we are very proud to say we did it! Looking to the future we are well placed to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing market and remain committed to working with our customers to develop solutions and product as demand arises.

RACK BUILDING FUNDAMENTALS After initially working in the commercial sector of the AV industry, Nick began running a team of rack wiremen for a large system integrator. He later went on to set up Visualization Limited, a reputable rack build and resource partner who provide integration services to the residential, commercial, retail and higher education installation industry. In recent years Nick and his staff have embraced the IPC620 certification, recognised as a quality standard within the cable assembly & wiring industry. Nick now teaches CEDIA’s own Rack Build & Wiring Fundamentals training course from CEDIA’s St. Neots HQ. Graeme Lyon, Product Manager of Canford’s rack brand Enclosure Systems (ES) asks Nick; “What are the key fundamentals of good rack design and what considerations should be given when planning the build...?” Nick Pidgeon, Director of Visualization Limited
Racks are the heart of any system whether the build be an audio visual, broadcast or network project. With this outlook we encourage our clients and partners not to overlook the detailed planning required to result in a fore mostly functional system, whilst not deferring from serviceability and presentation. Every Visualization rack goes through the following stages; pre-plan, pre-build and offsite-commission prior to just in time delivery with a constant focus on standardisation throughout. In each element the specific’s often can and do vary depending on clients requirements although this article focuses on the best practices.
Pre-plan At the outset take into account the equipment specified and the wide range of rack types and accessories available today, thought should be given to the most suitable size and depth of the rack and its intended environment on site. This may lead you to consider further options such as fan trays, stabilising plinths and heavy duty castors for transportation. It’s also crucial that consideration is given to rack accessories such as cable tray, lacing bars shelves and blanks. Canford stock 20 | Source Material by Canford
a varied range of these products to allow wiremen to choose what best fits their system as these are fundamental elements to any build. Determining a clear intention of connectivity between rack and site at this stage allows options such as floor or wall connection panels and rack mount patch panels be considered for the best circumstances. A clearly defined numbering system will speed up any build and result in a more serviceable system in future. With the above taken into consideration and prior to moving into build, you should now be able to produce a precise set of system designs. These include rack elevations & wiring schematics, clearly defining the various details of the project including patch panels, connection boxes and alike. This will enable the wiremen to interpret requirements and will also assist procurement at time of purchasing.
Pre-build The Visualization wiremen are a very process driven team. This means that standardisation of cable types, connectors and even the approach to every system allows them to produce racks, time after time with the same look and feel no matter which wireman works on it. Some of the best advice we can offer is:
• Attention to detail is imperative throughout the build • Always give consideration to cable tray and lacing bar placement
• For identification purposes, separate signal paths on cable tray • Neatly present cable lay & be conscious of cable flow within the rack
Call UK sales on +44(0)191 418 1122 or email sales@canford.co.uk
• Allow for re-termination with service loops
(you will thank me later for this as a failsafe)
• Be conscious to avoid tight bend radiuses as this can
affect the performance of cable as well as looking particularly unsightly.
Offsite Pre-commissioning Within our workshop we offer various options for offsite testing and commissioning. Ultimately each all have the same aim, which is to ensure as much of the system is functional prior to delivery to site. With tight timescales being a concern on many projects, allowing an element of time in your build plan will ensure this factor is given the attention needed. All racks should undergo power, continuity and an equipment power cycle test as standard. This often provides clients with a chance to deal with any issues caused from out of the box failures that would cause delays if only found when installed on site. When consultants are involved, there is often a requirement for witness testing. This gives the client an opportunity to see their system working offsite prior to final installation with equipment such as microphones, speakers and monitors plugged up as if in situ.
commissioning stage presents the opportunity to consider programming and setup of control systems, Digital sound processors and alike prior to delivery thus compacting time needed after installation.
Just-In-Time Delivery This method of delivery ensures expensive equipment isn’t being installed on site into an environment not ready, which is more often than not dirty, dusty and with other trades incomplete and working around the wiremen. Hopefully this article will have shown time taken to pre-plan, considering all elements will result in an efficient, serviceable and presentable system.
Whether continuity or witness testing, the offsite pre-

ENCLOSURE SYSTEMS
Whilst already an established brand within the Canford portfolio for in excess of 10 years, the acquisition of Enclosure Systems from Kentinental Engineering in May 2012 brought an added focus to both the brand and the product range. Initially centred on a range of 19” floor standing data and server racks, a series of steel wall-mount cabinets and a selection of open frame options, recent years have seen the portfolio expand, not only with additions to established ranges, such as 1000mm/1200mm deep floor standing racks to incorporate deeper blade servers. However, Canford has continued to innovate and has added products such as wooden racks, including wall mount, desktop and floor standing options along with IP rated wall mount cabinets, protecting against dust and water ingress for both internal and external applications. We strive to keep the product range constantly evolving, reacting to both market demands and specific client requests. Most recent additions to the range being our 466 Series
of IP66 rated steel wall-mount cabinets, suited for use in open areas subject to the full force of the elements, harsh environments such and Chemical/Pharmaceutical plants or even marine applications. The 414 Series of wooden AV Wall racks and the 415 Series of wooden desktop pods, both recently made available with either tinted acrylic or solid wood door options. Over the years Enclosure Systems have had the opportunity of supplying into a wide variety of market sectors, the following to name a few: Audio Visual, home install, corporate, education, networking, telecommunications and broadcast. In keeping with the core values of Canford we believe the Enclosure Systems 19” cabinet and accessory range offers a tried and tested quality solution at a competitive price point. With our years of experience, a dedicated team waiting to help and a comprehensive portfolio of products, Enclosure Systems have the solution for you.

FIBRE HDMI
RANGE EXTENDING CABLES
OxLinx cables offer a considerably more elegant and cost-effective solution for long HDMI cable runs than Cat5E cable with converter box systems. They are intended for commercial AV installations and broadcast where longer cable run lengths than those obtainable with standard copper HDMI cables are required. Applications may include professional AV systems interconnection, digital signage (DOOH) and kiosks, plus home theatre systems in larger properties. EMI and RFI immunity makes them also useful where the cable needs to pass through environments with high electrical interference. OxLinx cables are HDMI 1.4 compliant and compatible with video resolutions up to and including 4K @ 30Hz, 1080p @ 60Hz Full HD deep colour 48bit, 3D and multi-channel embedded audio to include PCM 8 channel, Dolby Digital True HD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Two versions are offered, LHM-N terminated with standard HDMI Type-A connectors and LHM-P which are terminated with micro HDMI Type-D connectors. Also known as the “pluggable versions, LHM-P cables were developed to aid fixed installation. The micro HDMI connectors reduce the likelihood of snagging as the cable is pulled through conduit, fed through voids or behind plaster board. Other benefits may include applications where cables must pass through congested and/or small apertures, such as internally wired brackets and mounts.
Unlike many other HDMI range extending products, no external power supplies are required. OxLinx cables are powered via the HDMI sockets of the connected device and power consumption is low @ 0.5W. All cables have a dual rated jacket which conforms to both LSOH (low smoke zero halogen) and CMP-OF (UL Plenum) standards for use in public buildings. Contractor friendly, the cable diameter is only 3.4mm and comprises four optical fibres for the video and audio signals, six copper wires for HDMI control signaling and CEC functions. Kevlar reinforcement gives a pulling strength of 500N (50kg). The directional plug & play hybrid cable assemblies are available now exclusively from Canford in the UK and are offered in incremental lengths ranging 10 to 100mtrs. See the Lusem OxLinx page for details. www.canford.co.uk/Lusem Lusem is a subsidiary of LG Corporation in Korea and focuses on design and manufacture of display circuit devices for LG Display & LG Electronics. Stock available NOW please contact Canford Sales on 0191 418 11 22
Custom screw-locking micro HDMI-D to HDMI-A adapters are supplied with LHM-P pluggable cables. The active electronics, which convert the electrical signal to optical and back, are housed within the body of the HDMI connectors with minimal effect to the overall size (cross section of 19.6mm x 11.2mm). Music
LICENCE. . . Do you need one? By Stephen Gallagher, Product Manager
If you play or intend to play recorded music or music videos in a business, community building or public place, including radio or TV, then the short answer to this question is almost certainly: Yes, two in-fact. It is a legal requirement that venues hold a valid PPL and PRS for Music licence. Music has become undeniably extremely important in commercial settings. It can be used to form part of a company’s corporate identity, drive consumer activity or raise staff moral and help increase productivity. As such background music systems are commonplace and while commercial audio system integrators may offer licensing guidance, in all cases it is the responsibility of the venue proprietor to ensure the appropriate licences are obtained. PPL (Phonographic Performance Limited) licence the use of recorded music played in public or broadcast on radio,

TV and on the internet. Established in 1934, PPL exist to ensure that those who invest their time, talent and money to make recorded music are fairly paid for their work. PPL collect and distribute licence fees for the use of music on behalf of record companies and performers. PRS for Music (Performing Rights Society) collect and distribute licence fees for the use of musical compositions and lyrics on behalf of songwriters, composers and publishers. Licencing costs are determined on a number of factors which include the type of premises, size, activity; community building, school, house of worship, restaurant, office or leisure centre for example, and the way you intend to play music. As background music or live music performance. By purchasing the correct music licences, businesses and organisers of social activities can play recorded music in the confidence of being legally compliant. Some instances may exist where the licence fees can be discounted or waived, such as in qualifying charitable, community buildings or healthcare premises. For more information and to learn the cost of the appropriate licences for your business or organisation please contact PPL and PRS for Music using the details below: www.ppluk.com www.prsformusic.com
