THE SCHOOL VISION
A school community where all are inspired to explore, empowered to express and challenged to excel.
As our vision states, a Canford education aims to offer every pupil the chance to explore their talents, to express their personalities and views and to be the very best they can be. These are powerful statements to make. How they are borne out in reality through the experiences of the pupils themselves illustrates that they are not merely words, but are truly embedded through the School’s culture. I hope you will enjoy reading the latest edition of our Impact report demonstrating how our vision for our education manifests itself in reality not only through facts and figures but crucially also through personal stories and pupil experiences.

OVERSEAS OPPORTUNITIES Five Canfordians are heading to US universities when they leave Canford this summer. Flora is following in her brother Robbie’s footsteps and has a place at Colgate in New York, while Alicia, Charlotte and Rhys (pictured) have been awarded scholarships - Rhys’ SAT score on the 96th percentile meant that he received offers from Drake, UCLA and Florida before settling on the University of Maryland reading Business Administration. Alicia’s high level sport, particularly Hockey, sees her moving on to Bellarmine in Kentucky, while Charlotte has a scholarship to Pepperdine in California to pursue the next stage of her Golf career. Head of School Arian is holding a full scholarship to Columbia, New York with a number of applications still pending before he makes a final decision.

Education can be used to make a difference to the person who receives it and to others who interact with them.” DR DAVID NEILL, DEPUTY HEAD CO-CURRICULAR

A school does not sit in isolation. We want our pupils to think globally, to explore cultures and continents and to use this in their learning. Visiting speakers with stories to tell of experiences around the world are complemented with a celebration of cultural events and talks by international pupils on the political, social or historical side of life.
Pupils help to deliver Shell Geography lessons surrounding development in the partnership regions.
Pupils can take part in trips to Canford’s partnership communities in India, Ghana, Argentina and Cambodia.

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.” Emerson’s quote epitomizes what we aim for for our pupils. We want them to challenge existing wisdom, to create, to share their passions, views and opinions. We are educators, but we have much to learn from our pupils and a culture where all feel able to express thoughts, ideas and feelings makes for a dynamic and accepting school community.
“The sense of achievement on the final night of a performance is second to none.”

EQUALITY, DIVERSITY & INCLUSION Canford is welcoming to all regardless of socioeconomic background, race, religion, physical ability, gender or sexuality. Equality, Diversity and Inclusion here is very much a shared approach with pupils, staff, Governors and the wider Canford Community working closely together. Through our programmes we enhance and enrich experiences for all across our School who are able to express their individuality, excel in the global community and explore the rich diversity of our world. As Nelson Mandela said “Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world”.
“I believe every youngperson should feel wanted at school and know that they are valued. There is so much we can learn from each other if we are prepared to listen.”

LOUISA: ART I’ve loved Art since an early age, however my real passion for it definitely started to develop when I took Art at GCSE and continued it at Pre-U. We were introduced to such a wide range of different mediums and there were no limitations as to what we could create. With so many different possibilities of outcomes for each project - from animations to sculptural fashion pieces to tape art - I started to love Art for more than just creating aesthetically pleasing pieces. The creativity and experimentation involved in the process really inspired me.
MUSIC
Canford has given me a lot of confidence in my Art. This has been shown through my recent work where I have stepped out of my comfort zone and started creating large scale pieces. I’d say that the Art department has definitely encouraged me to be a lot more ambitious and the teachers are always there to help you find ways to achieve any challenging idea you have.
DRAMA “The Art department has definitely encouraged me to be a lot more ambitious with my work.”
“Drama at Canford has helped me feel much less anxious in social environments and it’s given my confidence a big boost.”
SPORT
FREDDIE: DRAMA I’ve always had a very large passion for film and acting so when I got to Canford I wanted to get involved with as much Drama as I could. This led to me also developing a love for musicals and theatre through the productions performed here. Including Drama as a GCSE and A Level option has allowed me to study what I love in a much greater depth than I can do alone. This, along with the multiple productions which are always going on and available to get involved with, means that I’ve always got something drama-related on the go in my life. Once you overcome your initial fear of being on stage with hundreds of eyes watching you, other things don’t seem as daunting. Drama has helped me feel much less anxious in social environments and it’s given my confidence a big boost. I also feel much more at ease during public speaking.
I constantly talk about the Drama department, whether it’s the fantastic attitude of the teachers or the feeling of family within the cast by the end of a production. The sense of achievement on the final night of a performance is second to none.
“The idea of working hard for something larger than the present moment is the key skill for material success.”
WILL: MUSIC My passion for music really started to come out when I was about 15 and started playing around with songwriting on a piano. From then whether running House Music, song-writing with friends or simply just playing piano in house in the evening, I’ve tried to encourage and inspire others in a love of music. My favourite musical event in the year is without doubt House Music. It was my year in Upper Sixth to run it with my friends and I managed to put together 2 mash-up tracks, one of which would go on to be sung by 60 boys and the other by a select few. The event is entirely independent from staff until the final day. It was extremely rewarding and fun to take part in. Jazz Band is by far my favourite ensemble. I’m on the drum kit, and playing with other musicians to make more contemporary music who equally enjoy it is definitely a highlight of the week.
Playing for the musical has also been an interesting experience, being a part of the creation of something so large is very rewarding. Playing music teaches you a lot. Not only do you have to practise, you also have to perform, listen to others, shine, help others shine, work with people and have good time management. The biggest thing I’d say music teaches though is to delay gratification. In the modern world with everyone staring at their phones 24/7 looking for the next funny video or trend it can be easy to forget the value of being a part of and creating something that seems difficult. I can’t count the number of ‘challenging’ first rehearsals where I’d find myself looking around thinking “Goodness me, there’s no way we can put this together!” But I also couldn’t name a time where we didn’t manage it. The idea of working hard for something larger than the present moment is the key skill for material success and I believe it is something that music couldn’t teach you better.
“The leadership opportunities through my role as an NCO have been fantastic.”
PHOEBE: CCF Before joining Canford in Lower Sixth I was a member of the Wiltshire ACF and I have really enjoyed continuing my training here in the Army section. We are lucky to have so many opportunities in CCF and amazing facilities both at the school and in Dorset and Devon for weekend expeditions and exercises. The leadership opportunities through my role as an NCO have been fantastic and have given me the opportunity to develop skills such as organisation, planning and confidence. I have applied these into my academic work, friendships and general school life. I decided at the end of the summer to apply for an Army scholarship to combine with a degree course in Biological Sciences, hopefully at either Durham or Exeter. As part of the process, the two day Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB) assessment at their base in Westbury required many different skills – a fitness test, obstacle course, computer test involving numerical and abstract reasoning, a current affairs essay, a planning exercise and academic and current affairs interviews. Without the chance to develop my sport, interview technique, academic ability and global awareness through my Canford experience, I would definitely not have felt so well prepared to give it my best shot. I was both thrilled and surprised to receive my letter offering me a scholarship and I am excited to see where my military career takes me.
A place to EXCEL
We are ambitious for Canfordians, and you can read about achievements at the very highest levels by our talented pupils on these pages. Yet we define excellence as taking many forms and want to inspire our pupils to excel to the very best of their own abilities. Fine academic results, sporting records and top university offers are fantastic, but we commend those who grasp the opportunity to make a positive difference, as a Pupil Leader, as part of a team or offering support to a friend. These are all ways in which our pupils excel across their school lives.

MARY: ART SCHOLAR Canford has helped me be more patient, productive and experimental with my work. All these skills transfer over to my personal artistic endeavours and have made me be a better person and creator. I try to experiment in other subjects as much as I do in Art, and it really helps me with concepts that I can’t find my way around in. I love the fine skills that pursuing Art has given me.
ROBBIE: AC ADEMIC AND SPORTS SCHOLAR Canford has always been supportive of my swimming and helped me to balance my academic work with my sport. As a result I have been able to reach my potential in both - I was really pleased with my GCSE results and am enjoying my A Level subjects, while also representing the Swim England U18s Squad for two years in a row now. Swimming has helped me develop my leadership skills through my role as club captain, helping at galas and giving motivational team talks. I lead by example. Swimming at a high level takes a lot of courage and nerve, especially in finals against the best swimmers in the country, and I feel very lucky to be in a school which has helped me develop my talents in so many different areas.

OUR HEADS OF SCHOOL
MIMI Canford has given me the confidence to believe in myself and always strive for the best. I have been able to improve my communication skills greatly and to seek the views of others. Canford has helped me develop these skills by providing opportunities for me to work with groups of people within our community, helping to foster my leadership skills and enabling me to become a better listener and to cultivate a positive attitude. I have been involved in setting up and promoting a number of initiatives to help pupils support each other, such as the Wellbeing Committee, the Forum, Rainbow Alliance and an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion working body. My role as Head of School has enabled me to empower, encourage and provide opportunities for other pupils to become more involved in and therefore have a larger voice within the School. I love being able to promote things that I am passionate about and help make Canford the best possible school for everyone.
MATTHEW The most enjoyable part of this role for me has been being able to be the bridge between pupils and the staff. Being the voice for the pupil body and being able to improve and make changes in the School that I know my fellow pupils want and need has given me such a high level of self-satisfaction. Since joining Canford, I’ve truly developed my communication skills into being one of my greatest strengths. My ability to communicate with such a large range of people from varied backgrounds is something I don’t think I’d have been able to have honed to this extent if it wasn’t for Canford. Canford presents you with a wide range of challenging opportunities outside the classroom. One such area is CCF. Here I’ve been able to push my leadership abilities, organisation, and discipline to the maximum with the many mentally and physically tiring tasks that need to be solved and completed.
ARIAN My appointment as Head of School has further strengthened the positive feelings I already had about Canford. I have thoroughly enjoyed seeing how valuable the school community is to so many people, spanning across generations. It has been an honour to be in a position to promote its very special spirit. I feel that the main purpose of my role is to be a good ambassador for Canford and its values. My aim has been to set a positive precedent for all pupils by getting involved in a range of school initiatives. I also try to attend at as many sports fixtures and drama productions as possible, as I believe it is vital to support the hard work of my fellow pupils and to share a sense of strong community values. I am a proud member of the ‘Mighty Oaks’- our 1st XI football side. I feel there is a great sense of camaraderie amongst all sporting teams at Canford, regardless of ability. It is great to see many pupils and teachers venturing down to support on pitch side and making their voices heard.
ROSIE In my opinion, the main purpose of being a Head of School is to be a face of pupil initiative and change. We have had this approach in mind, setting up ‘The Forum’ as a space where ideas can be shared between pupils without staff intervention. By moving to Canford in Lower Sixth and experiencing a very turbulent period during Covid, I gained a sense of awareness, learnt to appreciate every opportunity and to make the most of small successes. Canford has helped me to develop my balancing skills, providing me with a jam-packed schedule of socialising, sports, and academia, and asking of me to manage the load and look after myself. While there has been plenty of help along the way, the independence and, at times, struggles, have taught me coping mechanisms and valuable life skills which a less busy timetable would not have provided.

Each house varies in layout but all are staffed and equipped to be welcoming, social environments, small enough for each pupil to feel well known and large enough to allow a variety of personalities to flourish. There is a collegiate atmosphere with houses co-located – boy boarding near the Astros and girl boarding near the Sports Centre. All pupils eat together in the main dining hall, are allowed to socialise in other houses and there are many mixed day and boarding events throughout the year, making for a true school community.

BURSARIES

Our fundraising focus at Canford in recent years has
pupils currently benefiting from 75% or more bursary support
Children’s SpringBoard Foundation and its partner,
been centred on transformational bursaries. Canford has built close links with both The Royal National Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy.
“Put simply, bursaries change lives. We want to provide the opportunity to add structure, substance and reality to the dreams and ambitions of young people whose life chances are likely to preclude this. This is very much a partnership as not only will pupils accessing a bursary benefit greatly, but their presence within the Canford community will add breadth and richness to the educational and life experience of all within it.” BEN VESSEY, HEADMASTER
