SCHOOL COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

The Bourne Academy SCHOOL COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP Canford is one of only seven independent schools in the UK to fully sponsor an Academy, offering The Bourne Academy in East Howe time, exper tise and suppor t. It is a par tnership both schools derive real benefit from.

The effect of the sponsorship can be easily seen in the improvement of exam results, the behaviour and the numbers attending the school. Ofsted inspection grades have moved from Failing to ‘Good with Outstanding features’. The younger year groups are now full (against a background of falling numbers in the borough).

“I am grateful to you and to Canford School for your support of the Bourne Academy. It is clear that this has had a positive impact on the school’s educational outcomes, demonstrated by the encouraging 2018 results.” LORD AGNEW

SCHOOL COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP

“For one student it has been described as ‘life changing’ where she has found her confidence and is now challenging herself to be entered for the Higher paper.” CANFORD TEACHER

CANFORD/BOURNE ACADEMY PROJECTS INCLUDE: • Science tutoring to help Year 10 students who are struggling to achieve a C-grade • A Year 9 Book Club which meets regularly at each school • Par ticipation in Canford-led Years 7 & 8 Geography Quiz • Year 12 Careers Symposium • Canford Sixth Formers – classroom assistants for TBA pupils • Bourne Academy pupils are invited to join the annual Academic par tnership day at Canford • SALPs train Canford pupil panel interviewers • Bourne Academy pupils join Canford pupils on a CCF RN sailing trip

SHINE SERIOUS FUN ON SATURDAYS

Canford introduced the SHINE project in 2012 to provide local children from deprived areas with the oppor tunity to acquire the skills and confidence they need to turn their potential into success at school and beyond. Funding from SHINE ceased in 2018 but colleagues at Canford and par tnering primary schools were determined to continue with this great work. The programme for gifted and talented children involves staff from almost every depar tment across the school as well as a number of senior pupils. Pupils from three local state schools come to Canford for some ‘Serious Fun on Saturdays’ – a vibrant and dynamic series of workshops and lessons in all disciplines of sciences, humanities, languages and the creative ar ts, allowing every pupil to experience and cultivate a deeper understanding of these different areas of knowledge.

“For those who come to Canford, we see a marked difference in their enthusiasm to learn back at school and real sparks of aspiration and so much more possibilities for their future education.” PARTNER SCHOOL “For many of our pupils, SHINE is a chance to raise their aspirations and for them to spend time in a quality environment outside their own school, where learning is paramount.” PARTNER SCHOOL

“SHINE has ensured that families can look to the future with a sense of purpose and hope.” HEAD TEACHER, KINGSLEIGH PRIMARY SCHOOL

LOC AL SCHOOL LINKS

20+ local state schools and education centres have community links with Canford

“They have all had a positive influence on the children. We hope that the Canford students continue to want to help us for a long time to come.” BEARWOOD FIRST SCHOOL

“We wanted to share some feedback with you that we received this morning concerning one of your students. The teacher reported that one of her students was unhappy yesterday afternoon and was refusing to do his work. Your student worked with the boy calming him down and, in her words, “was amazing”.” PARTNER SCHOOL

“I have really enjoyed helping the children and teachers in different activities. I really want to make a difference at the school.” CANFORD PUPIL

“Every Monday I have been going to Colehill First School to teach French. I always feel a sense of achievement knowing that I have helped them.” CANFORD PUPIL

“On Mondays I go to Fernhill Alzheimer’s home where I spend time talking to the residents and help to plan and run activities which are hopefully stimulating and fun for them.” CANFORD PUPIL

“We just wanted to send a note to say a very big thank.

“I have very much enjoyed getting to know everyone at the SeaView Centre and trying to brighten up their days. I have learnt just how far compassion and kindness can impact someone’s life.” CANFORD PUPIL

Please thank all the students for the effort that they put in to making it a very enjoyable afternoon and also to the Music Teacher who led it very well. We are sure that all the older people appreciated it.” CARE HOME STAFF

COMMUNITY PROJECTS

CITY REACH

Northam Project This project is a long-term par tnership between our pupils and the inner city community of Nor tham involving a programme of visits and activities. Nor tham is a small neighbourhood in Southampton near the hear t of the city which is geographically quite isolated and with few local amenities. For the people of Nor tham, the project provides an oppor tunity to take par t in a range of activities which it is sometimes difficult for them to access and also provides suppor t for the work of the Community Centre and its leaders.

“The sound of laughter and the sight of many smiling faces were apparent at every activity and the children’s enthusiasm was infectious. The Fairthorne Manor weekend helped Canfordians make a real difference to young people’s lives.” PROJECT LEADER “Over the activity weekends we try and get them to push their boundaries and achieve goals they didn’t really believe were possible.” PROJECT LEADER

“The children have been given the opportunity to behave like children again away from the home where mum often needs emotional support from them at low times.” FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER

“He is a different child. He has experienced activities that he would not have had the chance to participate in.” YOUTH WORKER

“He has found so much confidence and his physical and mental health has greatly improved.” FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER

IMPACT OF BURSARIES

BURSARIES CHANGE LIVES

26

pupils currently benefiting from 75% or more bursary funding

Our fundraising focus at Canford in recent years has been very much centred on transformational bursaries, which focus on young people from backgrounds which would otherwise preclude access to Canford and who are thus given what is truly a life changing oppor tunity. Canford has built close links with both The Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation and also, it’s partner, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy. This is a charity giving life-transforming oppor tunities to disadvantaged and vulnerable children. These young people typically come from a background of social deprivation.

“My self-confidence increased considerably. I feel able to let other pupils know that children from different backgrounds can achieve, I cannot imagine what my life would be like now if I hadn’t attended Canford.” BURSARY RECIPIENT

“Never in a million years did I expect to come to a school like Canford. It has had a major impact on my life.” BURSARY RECIPIENT

IMPACT OF BURSARIES

“If I could sum up what Canford gave me, I would say that it gave me the confidence to aim high. Without it, I’m not sure I would have applied for Medicine at Oxbridge, never mind succeed in my application. I am extremely grateful for the scholarship and bursary that I received from Canford, and believe I wouldn’t be where I am today without it.” BURSARY RECIPIENT

My mother and family back in Venezuela are incredibly proud. They are very keen for me to run for President of Venezuela!”

“Receiving a bursary to attend Canford has been a life changing experience and has made such a difference to me. It is not just about the two years Sixth Form education that I have received, it has changed my whole perspective and opened up an incredibly valuable network.” BURSARY RECIPIENT

“I fully support what the school are doing to support young people like myself and I am keen to give back and help whenever I am able to.” BURSARY RECIPIENT

GLOB AL PARTNERSHIPS

GLOBAL PARTNERSHIPS Each summer Sixth Formers have the oppor tunity to work in one of our overseas community par tnerships, which are currently based in India, Argentina and Ghana. From new school buildings to basic clean water supplies, the money raised by pupil initiated fund-raising activities allows the Par tnership to flourish.

INDIA PARTNERSHIP EST. 1994

Goodwill provides residential care for orphans, children from impoverished one parent families and children from deprived tribal families. During this trip Canfordians stay mainly at the Goodwill Children’s Home in Thandigudi. They spend their days teaching the children – aged five to eleven – predominantly English and Maths, along with ar ts and crafts, book readings and games. In the afternoons they play for hours with the children. As the conditions at Thandigudi have improved we are adapting the project to suppor t and educate children in surrounding tribal villages.

Over

£120,000 raised for global partnerships in the last 5 years

GLOB AL PARTNERSHIPS

“Mama Lynn told us some amazing recovery stories of the children she had rescued. One of them was Patrick, who was left to die by a water duct weighing 7.8 kg at twelve years of age. Given no chance of survival, he now leads a full and happy life.” SIXTH FORMER, INDIA PARTNERSHIP

“Canfordians teach English, Maths and much more through a series of active lessons. The Canfordians showed not only willing and ability but also inspired some of the local teachers who sat and watched or at times couldn’t resist but give the answer!” PROJECT LEADER

GLOB AL PARTNERSHIPS

GHANA PARTNERSHIP EST. 2014 Canford’s latest Par tnership link is with the Awutu-Winton Senior High School in Ghana. The school has been set up by the EDP Trust, which was formed in 2009 with the aim of promoting educational initiatives in the developing world. Our par tnership in Ghana focuses on contributing to the ongoing successful development of the only free secondary school in the country.

“In addition to teaching students at the school, Canfordians get involved in practical projects and complete DIY to improve the school environment.” PROJECT LEADER

“Some of the money raised by pupils prior to their visit is put towards new projects within the school such as buying chemicals for the newly built laboratory but the majority funds the upkeep of the school, such as maintenance and staff salaries. Without such donations, it is likely that most of the 440 students aged 15-22 would never receive secondary education.” PROJECT LEADER

GLOB AL PARTNERSHIPS

ARGENTINA PARTNERSHIP EST. 2001 The Argentina Par tnership is with Hogar el Alba, a children’s home in a suburban shanty-town on the outskir ts of Buenos Aires. They take in as many children as they can afford to and provide them with food, shelter, education, and all the love they require.

“While at the orphanage this year, Canfordians assisted in renovating the sports hall, which was dilapidated and falling apart. This sports hall is used by the population of the surrounding neighbourhood and therefore not only benefits the children but a whole community.” SIXTH FORMER, ARGENTINA PARTNERSHIP

“I am very thankful to have the chance to give 53 children all our energy and love for three weeks and for them to bring perspective to our own lives.” SIXTH FORMER, ARGENTINA PARTNERSHIP
