2018: The Year in Numbers 18
ON THE COVER PAGE 12 - SCHOOL PHILANTHROPY Photo taken during the City Reach Summer Camp in 2018.
As you will all be aware our fundraising focus at Canford in recent years has been very much centred on transformational bursaries. These bursaries focus on young people from backgrounds which would otherwise preclude access to Canford and who are thus given what is truly a life changing opportunity. One of the organisations we have worked closely with to engage with such deserving young people is The Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation (RNCSF). This is a charity giving life-transforming opportunities to disadvantaged and vulnerable children. These young people typically come from a background of social deprivation. To quote from the RNCSF website: ‘Some of our children have experienced parental death, abuse, or sibling/parent disability and are at the edge of care, others come from loving and supportive environments but have some measure of social deprivation. We also support Looked After Children through our work with local authorities. Our mission is to improve and transform the lives of young, disadvantaged children by supporting their educational opportunities in both state and independent boarding schools. By doing this, we seek to improve their educational attainment, employability, and aspirations.’
Canford is about to accept our fourth RNCSF pupil in September 2019 and we are committed to increasing the numbers we can support in the years ahead. The RNCSF works in close co-operation with boarding schools and partner organisations in the areas from which the young people come. This provides a joined up and year round support network to ensure the experience for each young person is a high quality one with significant and successful outcomes.
In relation to outcomes I have included below some extracts from the recent RNCSF impact update. This work is truly making a difference. •
The mental well-being assessment process is growing and developing; this has been invaluable for the schools and the pupils. We now have data which shows that boarding school is having a notable positive impact on the well-being of our pupils.
• The retention rate in schools for all our children is 93%. •
All the children who started in September 2018, through both routes, have made successful starts in their new schools. This is really impressive and testifies to the depth of pastoral support given by the schools, the support of Royal SpringBoard and most importantly the strength of the pupils themselves.
• We are also very proud of our existing pupils, two of whom have become Heads of School. • From our last survey of school leavers, 100% had fulfilled post-18 aspirations - 87% went to university; 13% took a gap year, and 7% took up apprenticeships. •
‘Inspire young people to embrace learning in all its forms and to use their educational experience to make a real and positive difference to their own lives and to the lives of others.’ Engagement with the RNCSF/EYLA partnership is just one of the routes by which we are seeking to support deserving and needy young people at Canford. It is wonderful to see that for the second year running our Canford Charitable Annual Bursary Fund has secured sufficient donations to support a pupil from The Bourne Academy in Kinson, Bournemouth, which is sponsored by Canford, through the Sixth Form at our school. Beyond bursaries, Canford continues to work hard on community partnership programmes. We currently have 56 separate community projects with over 245 pupils involved weekly. Last year over 8,000 pupil volunteer hours were given to supporting these projects which had a real impact on the local schools, care homes and charities we have links with. On top of this Canford staff are involved with teaching, as serving governors in local schools and we have supported a wide range of local school events through access to our facilities. Staff and pupils have raised £33K for local charities and £70K for international charities. If we can further increase our efforts in any of all of these projects that would be magnificent. Any help and support you can give in any way will be greatly valued - not least by those whose lives are transformed.
Over the last two years 94% of SpringBoard pupils secured five GCSEs (Free School Meal national average 36%). Of 2018 leavers, pupils have gone on to top universities across the country (inc Oxford,Warwick and King’s College, London) and in the US.
• In the not too distant future we will have more than 100 accredited boarding schools.

DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT
Canford has built close links with both the RNCSF and also, it’s partner, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy (EYLA), in Newham, East London, where our RNCSF pupils have joined us from. Ray Lewis, founder of EYLA spoke very powerfully at our Gala Fundraising dinner in November 2018 and I am looking forward to visiting EYLA soon.
RNCSF pupils are imbued with a strong sense of service both by the schools they attend, by RNCSF and by the partner organisations in their communities. They have been given an amazing chance to change their own lives but they are also very committed to giving back to their communities in whatever way they can. This sits naturally with Canford’s own vision and mission to:

We are fortunate to be able to visually capture many of our events and this seemed a fitting way to showcase what we have been involved in over the last year, hence our year in pictures (opposite).
ATES Whilst this is a reflective report, it EBR EL is good to look forward and there C is much to celebrate in 2019/20. The first female pupils arrived at Canford in 1969 so much of our programme from September will focus around Canford’s CO-EDUCATION celebration of co-education. The centenary of Canford is not far away either in 2023 so watch this space ...
We have a lot of fun with our events and we certainly hope you enjoy them too but alongside this, there is purposeful meaning to our work. Some of our events have a fundraising element, for example the Gala Dinner, and funds from these are directed to the Martin Marriott Foundation for bursaries. You will read in this report details about how your support is having an impact on the lives of Canfordians. Thank you, your support really is making a difference. We have big ambitions to support many more children to access a Canford education so if you are in a position to help us, our future bursary pupils will be extremely grateful.
The Development Team

The Development team are in good form! Syrie, our Supporter Engagement Officer continues to be your main point of contact. She is the face behind many of the logistical elements of our events and answers numerous emails from you every day. Lauren, Marketing and Communications Officer, continues to produce all things visual for us from email adverts to this report. We were sorry to say goodbye to Joanna, Database Officer as she left in October to pursue her career in Law but we welcomed Louise Tegerdine who has slotted into the team seamlessly.

We were delighted to once again welcome parents, OCs and friends to the Gala Dinner and silent auction in November, where we raised £10,000 for the Charitable Annual Bursary Fund. Guests were entertained by OC James Aiken and Chris Sparkhall on the piano before a fabulous three course meal in the beautifully decorated Great Hall. Canford pupils provided a musical interlude during dinner and our speaker, Ray Lewis from the Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy, provided a thought provoking speech about the work of EYLA with injected humour about some of his experiences working with young people from challenging circumstances. During the evening there was some frenetic bidding via iPads. The auction was available on line prior to the event but only guests present at the dinner were able to bid further on lots. The top prize was a walk on part in Doc Martin closely followed by a 3-night stay in a lighthouse cottage. We are extremely grateful to our main sponsors PKF Francis and to members of the Canford Community who generously provided auction lots. Next year’s gala dinner will be held on Saturday 16th November. Save the date!

Everyone! This is the opportunity for Old Canfordians, parents and friends to join forces and offer a life-changing opportunity to a deserving young person. WHAT DOES IT COST TO SUPPORT A PUPIL AT CANFORD? The current cost to support a day pupil is £27,723 a year. The current cost to support a boarding pupil is £36,420 a year. A bursary place includes the fees listed above plus 10% to cover essential extras including uniform, books, laptop and trips.
With your help, we can transform lives. Thank you.
GALA DINNER Bursary Recipients At the end of the Summer Term, I now try to meet with all of our pupils who have been in receipt of a bursary and are about to leave Canford. I am keen to find out what difference this opportunity has made to these young people. I have to admit that this part of my role is the most rewarding. Fundraising isn’t always an easy path to tread and there are knocks along the way. However, hearing from pupils who have benefited from the hard work put in by so many at the school and the wider Canford Community is a real joy. Rowena Gaston
Finding the right pupils for our bursary programme is vital. Once a place has been offered at Canford any pupil whose family circumstances meet our criteria may apply for a bursary, some may be Scholars, others may not be. The level that we award varies according to individual circumstance and families have to demonstrate a genuine need. Canford works closely with partnership organisations and has developed excellent relationships in order to identify and select pupils who will benefit from a bursary. Our partners include The Bourne Academy, HMC European, Eastside Young Leaders’ Academy and the Royal National Children’s SpringBoard Foundation (Royal SpringBoard). Royal SpringBoard is an educational charity which seeks to select suitable pupils from economically and socially disadvantaged backgrounds who would benefit from a bursary place which covers the entire cost of a private, boarding education. Whilst ensuring that such children will be academically able to thrive, we do not support just the
“At Canford I feel that I have been able to truly be myself and have been accepted for who I am. There is no prejudice here and in my U6 year particularly, I have made friends that I know I will stay in touch with for many years. With my interest in politics, they are very keen for me to run for President of Venezuela - in time, this is something I would very much like to consider, to make the country a better place for all.”
most able or talented, but those who stand to gain most from, and contribute to, a boarding education. Once at Canford, there is subtle but additional pastoral care in place for bursary pupils to ensure that their transition to Canford is smooth and enables them to thrive. In addition, Royal SpringBoard provide support to pupils in their home environment during holiday periods. There are currently 100 Royal SpringBoard partner schools in the UK awarding 465 bursaries to date. Canford has been a Royal SpringBoard partner since 2016 when we welcomed the first bursary recipient into the Shells. Since then we have been able to support one pupil per year.

“My outlook on life has opened up tremendously since joining Canford. I have higher aspirations regarding what I can achieve. Being surrounded by hard working, intelligent friends has allowed me to excel and develop lifelong friendships. I doubt I would have applied to the universities I have offers for and I am confident that I have a bright future ahead of me. I will always be keen to come back!”
“Academically Canford has been good for me, as it has pushed me to work hard. At Canford, it is cool to be clever - not something I had encountered at my other school. You can try new things and feel comfortable about having a go.”

Leaving a gift to Canford in your Will is a wonderful way to ensure that the school continues to thrive and provide tremendous opportunities for young people for generations to come. All gifts big or small are greatly appreciated. Providing for Canford in your Will demonstrates a tremendous commitment on your part, one that we think should be honoured during your lifetime. The Nineveh Legacy Society is our way of honouring and thanking those who remember Canford in their Will.
The Society is named in honour of the lasting legacy of the Assyrian Frieze brought from Nineveh by Sir Austen Henry Layard and the impact of this on the development of Canford. Membership of the Nineveh Legacy Society is granted to all those who have signalled an intention to make a bequest to Canford. Nineveh Legacy Society members are invited each year to a lunch at Canford to honour their commitment to the school. If you would like to find out more about leaving a legacy to Canford, including the inheritance tax benefits please contact Rowena Gaston www.canford.com/Nineveh-Legacy-Society

When I was in my 50s I reflected on my life and realised that Canford had given me a tremendous start, academically and professionally, as well as instilling an ethos that had allowed me to overcome many difficulties despite a severe disability from early childhood. I wanted others to have that opportunity, so both my wife and I decided to leave legacy bequests to give others the same chance in life.” John McFarlane S67

CANFORD WISH LIST Donations and contributions that enhance education and life at Canford are tremendously valuable to our pupils and staff. Canford prides itself on providing a rounded education for all pupils involving as many varying opportunities as possible. There are certain items or projects that can enhance this education further and make an immense difference.
“Today, I enjoy friendships with several Old Canfordian schoolmates: each different, each successful and not always positive of our era’s erstwhile, most macho regime. Back then, learning difficulties attracted stern correction.
We are extremely grateful to our donors who have invested in equipment which will enhance pupils’ education for years to come. DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT
Today, in perfect contrast, Canford encourages each student to achieve his or her fullest potential. I regularly encounter both staff and happy pupils and find, better still, intuit something good, positive, something fine: it’s in the air.
In 2018 Canford was fortunate to receive donations from a number of parents and OCs that enabled us to purchase items from our Wish List. These items included a gel electrophoresis kit for Biology, enhanced football coaching, Chamber Choir folders and the refurbishment of the Steinway Grand Piano (match funded by the school).
We were so sorry to hear of Michael Toosey’s passing in July 2018. A charismatic man who had such fond memories of Canford, he entertained both staff and pupils with stories of his time at school during the war. He was most generous in donating a significant sum of money to enable Canfordians in receipt of a bursary to access all that Canford has to offer by giving additional financial assistance for extension activities such as trips, tours etc. His legacy lives on through the Dr Toosey Awards and will help future Canfordians. Thanks to his donation, in 2018 pupils were able to take part in a hockey tour, the CCF trip to Norway, a pre-season rugby tour, a Geography trip to Naples and an extensive work experience project in the USA. Canfordians return with useful skills, as they have been required to undertake several days of teaching while they are away. Other benefits, too, are tangible even if they are more ephemeral. There is an appreciation of what they have in material terms and also in terms of opportunities. They have a greater ‘global awareness’ and one hopes this will influence them in the future when they go on to be decision makers and opinion formers. Furthermore they have witnessed the potential for positive change. Education can be used to make a difference to the person who receives it and to others who interact with them.
GHANA - 2018 Our group of ten pupils and three teachers spent two and a half weeks at Awutu Winton High School. Awutu Winton High School provides free secondary education and is totally reliant on charitable donations. Some of the money raised by pupils prior to their visit is put towards new projects within the school such as buying chemicals for the newly built laboratory but the majority funds the upkeep of the school, such as maintenance and staff salaries. Without such donations, it is likely that most of the 440 students aged 15-22 would never receive secondary education.
Much of their syllabus interestingly is very similar to Canfordians in the UK. This allowed Canford pupils to help AW pupils revise for their Geography exams, but, in turn, the Canfordians learnt as much as the Ghanaian students with the trip itself being a truly valuable experience. The hospitality and goodwill shown by the Awutu students is tremendous as they share their traditions and cultures. Almost every evening, the students gather in the school playground and encourage Canfordians to get involved with traditional dances, songs and games. Teaching Canfordians African dances provides the Ghanaian students with much entertainment! In turn, our pupils taught them some popular songs and dances from the UK, which they found very amusing. The Ghanaian girls and boys set up Canford vs. Awutu volleyball and football games, which attract a large crowd of students who would gather in high spirits, cheering and singing from the sidelines, no matter what the score. Canfordians also take part in their annual 16km walk down to the beach, which provides the opportunity to get to know the students in an out-of-school environment.
The sense of community and joy at the school is remarkable and Canford pupils and staff always feel welcome and truly appreciated. In addition to teaching students at the school, Canfordians get involved in practical projects and complete DIY to improve the school environment. We left behind benches that we had built during the week for them to eat lunch on, but more importantly, we left Awutu Winton with a taste of our culture, just as we have all returned with a different outlook on life and a true love of Ghana. As we flew back (wearing the Ghanaian shirts and dresses that had been tailored for us) we were reassured by the fact that next year, another group of Canfordians will go and provide even more support to the school. The trip was an experience of a lifetime and many of us are considering returning to Ghana during our gap years. Deya Shergill
DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT
The Canford overseas partnership programme is now in its 23rd year. Interest in the trips amongst pupils remains strong, both from our partners and Lower Sixth volunteers. Competition for places each year is fierce and less than half of those who want to volunteer are able to secure a place on the trips. Of course, the money we take with us is also important. Each Canfordian participant is encouraged to raise money for the host community and the visit means that they can ensure that donor money reaches its intended targets in an effective manner. However, the effect on our friends overseas is more than just monetary. Our friendship makes them feel more important and respected, and the focus of our visits helps to reinforce the value of education in poor communities, especially for women.

ARGENTINA - 2018 The Argentina Partnership is with Hogar El Alba, a children’s home in a suburban shantytown on the outskirts of Buenos Aires. Our link with ‘The Hogar’ as it is affectionately known is now over ten years old. While at the Hogar El Alba orphanage this year, Canfordians assisted in renovating the sports hall, which was dilapidated and falling apart. This sports hall is used by the population of the surrounding neighbourhood and therefore not only benefits the children but a whole community.
DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT
14
In addition to the sports hall, pupils also sanded, stained and built the frames for two greenhouses, to allow the home to grow its own fruit and vegetables all year round. This helps their bakery and kitchen, where children from the neighbourhood as well as the Hogar come to learn a trade. Although the work we do affects a community, the children are without a doubt the most important aspect of the Argentina Partnership. They have an amazing impact on pupils who spend a considerable amount of time with them, either playing with them, generally spending time entertaining them or listening to their stories. As well as enjoying celebrations with the children, they also learn of their horrific stories. For example, five years ago, Aaron, now aged twelve, was living under a bridge in a tarpaulin house with his older sister, mother and stepfather. The stepdad was an alcoholic and violently abused him and his sister. His mother was a drug addict and was unable to look after them. They were taken in by the Hogar, but Aaron’s sister left him there after three years when she decided to go and live with her biological father. Two years later and Aaron has been adopted by new parents and has earned himself a scholarship at a private school in Buenos Aires. Despite such horrible beginnings, the Hogar has given all the children their childhood back and is enabling happy endings for lots of children in their care.
The work that Canford does is invaluable and this was highlighted by something one of the residents of the Hogar said to one of our pupils this year… ‘‘Everybody here waits all year for Canford to come and visit. It is the highlight of the year. We count down the days.’’
The time Canfordians spend building and helping the home is important ‘‘but it’s what you leave in their hearts, which is far more important,’ ’ Kareena, one of the owners, told us on our last night in Argentina. So I am grateful to have helped a community but, most importantly, to have given 53 children all our energy and love for three weeks and to have had them bring perspective to our own lives and help us understand how fortunate we are. Kitty Arnold
INDIA - 2018 During this trip Canfordians stay mainly at the Goodwill Children’s Home in Thandiguidi. They spend their days teaching the children – aged five to eleven – predominantly English and Maths, along with arts and crafts, book readings and games. In the afternoons they play for hours with the children. Pupils visit a girls’ home and a boys’ home down on the plains, where the children from Thandiguidi go once they reach 11 and stay until they are 18. The annual Canford vs India cricket match at the boys’ home - which Canford won is always a highlight! After we visited the boys, we went on to stay with a Tribal Outreach Program (TORP), which offers education to children living in tribal villages. Here we delivered stationery and school supplies and played with the children.
We had no showers during our stay in India and had to use buckets filled with cold water in order to wash. This was definitely something we were all a bit apprehensive about, but we all learned how to have the quickest ‘showers’ of our lives and it was certainly a memorable aspect of our time in India, Whilst it was amusing and sometimes frustrating, it made us grateful for the facilities and privileges we have at home that we often take for granted. Eating with our hands was also a new experience that took a while to get used to, but we were so good at it by the end! The India Partnership was an incredible experience that will undoubtedly be one of my most treasured memories of my time at Canford. We made a real difference to lives while enriching our own, and had our eyes opened to how lucky we truly are. Amelia Godel DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT
We managed to walk through several villages, including the ‘Canford village’, with which we have a connection. All the villagers
were curious and stood outside their homes while we walked past, but they were all so friendly and some spoke to us – it was lovely to feel involved in their community.

Community Groups OLD CANFORDIAN SOCIETY The OCS has met a number of times this year to discuss how we develop our alumni services to become more agile and inclusive to all OCs. DEVELOPMENT ANNUAL REPORT

Working groups for events, communication and careers have taken shape and it has been encouraging to have input from OCs on what they would like to see from a programme of events. Look out in the coming year for regular reunion lunches, OC university get-togethers, networking events, the usual OC fixtures and Fifty Years of Co-education celebrations.
FRIENDS OF CANFORD MUSIC Vivace! The lively pace set in the Music School at Canford has continued, perhaps even accelerated this past year. The annual staples – Sung Evensong at Winchester Cathedral, Christmas Concert, Carol Concert, Jazz Concert, French choral singing at Christchurch Priory, House Music Competition (streamed on YouTube), Sounds of Canford concert series, Leavers’ Concert, Summer Concert and many more – were augmented with professional musicians’ concerts including the renowned Soprano Julia Doyle and now-regular recording of A level recitals and masterclass with members of The Britten Sinfonia. The public swelled attendance at the evening of French choral music at Christchurch Priory too. Events are regularly supported by Friends of Canford Music (FCM), comprising predominantly of parents. Its aim is to support the department in both publicity and in warmly welcoming you to events, often with a beverage and a programme! The instrument donation scheme is also
operating. Perhaps you have a good quality but unused instrument gathering dust and would like to donate it, thereby helping more young people to make even more music? If you are interested in joining our mailing list to hear about forthcoming events simply fill in the online form at www.canford.com/join-fcm or email fcm@canford.com. We look forward to welcoming you to the Music School very soon. Ben Davies S88, Chair FCM
Sincere thanks to all of our OCs and Friends who work so hard to make our programme fun and successful.
FRIENDS OF CANFORD Why is Friends of Canford important to you? This is the question I posed to some parents who have involved themselves with the Friends of Canford during the time their teenagers have attended the school. “Initially I wanted to get involved to support the school’s philanthropy. My objectives shifted to being more about opportunities to connect parents with each other and the school and feel part of the Canford Community.” “I am someone who is keen learn or try something new. It’s also a great way to enjoy the stunning facilities and meet other parents and members of the Canford Community.” “It’s all about having fun. At the same time, it’s good know we are raising funds which will make a difference to the lives of other young people who do not have the chances which ours do.” “We have made new friends and it’s great to be part of the Canford experience. Everyone usually lingers long after the events have finished to continue to chat and enjoy the good food and drinks prepared by the Canford catering team.”
“I enjoy the quiz night and the talks about the history of the school and all the unusual trees in the school arboretum.” “With so many great events, it’s tough to pick a favourite event. The Canford staff make the lacrosse, real tennis & rowing mornings so much fun and the chance to shoot on the school’s rifle range is amazing.” “I love the golf day in June. The weather is always glorious and the school grounds are looking their best.” The Friends of Canford events were incredibly well supported again in 2018. Our thanks go to everyone who attended and all the Canford staff who supported us. The result is that we have been able to provide some important funds to support the school’s community programmes with City Reach, Shine and other broader learning activities for Canford pupils. New events in 2018 included the return of the much-cherished Spring Lunch. “The guest speaker at the Spring Lunch was a jewellery designer, artist and OC daughter. She gave an entertaining and thoughtprovoking presentation on her artist father, her career as an artist, and a fun outlook on her jewellery creations.” All of the Friends of Canford events are promoted on the Canford website www.canford.com/Book-Events. As always, everyone is welcome. Do come along! Anita Ambrose-Hunt, Chair FCS
The summer rowing season drew to a close with the Girls’ Double Scull and J16 Quad both qualifying for Henley Women’s Regatta. The Boys’ 1st VIII matched this achievement qualifying for Henley Royal Regatta, where Friends of Canford Rowing hosted lunchtime drinks on a scorching hot day on 4th July. It brought the season to a very pleasant conclusion with many OCs and friends present. Meanwhile, the House Regatta and Boat Club dinner were a sell-out! Much fun was had at the House Regatta and pupils were presented with their medals by Sarah Winckless MBE whilst guests were treated to her exceptional after dinner speech - truly inspirational for all who attended. Other rowing events were supported throughout the year by parents willing to give up their time to see their children row, cook the occasional rasher of bacon or sausage, pour a hot cuppa and socialise with other parents. The Friends of Canford and City Reach Some may ask why the Friends of Canford charges for its events. Money raised covers basic costs and supports some specific projects chosen by the FCS committee each year but priority at present is given to the City Reach project. This project is a long-term partnership between our pupils and the inner city community of Northam involving a programme of visits and activities. Northam is a small neighbourhood in Southampton near the heart of the city which is geographically quite isolated and with few local amenities. For the people of Northam, the project provides an opportunity to take part in a range of activities which it is sometimes difficult for them to access and also gives support for the work of the Community Centre and its leaders. Typical events include activity weekends at an outdoor education centre, weekend summer camps for 50 youngsters at Canford, theatre visits, trips for the elderly and joint fundraising campaigns. Canford’s involvement with youth work in inner city Southampton reached its sixteenth anniversary in 2018.

GIVE BACK
At the end of 2018 we launched our brand new alumni platform – Canford Global Connect. This is a completely new online platform for Old Canfordians. It allows you to find, re-connect and reminisce with fellow OCs as well as enabling you to utilise the trusted Canford environment to expand your professional network. This new initiative, supported by the Old Canfordian Society will serve as an effective communication tool for Canford events and will enable you to find out ‘who’s going’ - something that we are constantly asked about! If you are considering changing your career path and need advice, looking for a new job or seeking to recruit someone for your organisation, this network will be invaluable. Already we have many OCs who have offered to help by giving advice or being a mentor. Thank you! For this platform to become increasingly effective we need as many OCs to join as possible. You can edit your profile as with other social media sites and offer (or not) what works best for you.
