MEN’S SOCCER • SEASON PREVIEW

Backs The Griffs’ defensive unit boasts more experience than any other position this season. Three senior starters return in Mike Globits, Adam Studniarek and Sean Vella in addition to 2008 MAAC All-Rookie selection Kyle Westerholt. The four players have combined to start 134 games during their careers and Hesch will look toward the four to stabilize the team’s defensive effort. “We have a senior-stacked back four,” Hesch said. “They will lead our defense this season but we need an overall team effort. It is 11 players attacking and 11 players defending. If we can keep the ball out of our own net, we will have a real good shot in the MAAC.” An All-MAAC selection in 2007, Vella will anchor the unit during his senior campaign. The team captain missed all but two MAAC contests due to injury in 2008 but still totaled two goals in 13 games as a junior. Studniarek has started 54 games during his career, posting six goals and three assists. The Poland native tallied three goals in 2008 after moving to the back position from forward. Globits has appeared in 38 games with 23 starts during his career, while Westerholt netted two goals and an assist in his rookie campaign. Goalkeepers Serving as the last line of the defense behind the backs are sophomores Adam Miller and Luke Seymour. The duo provides the team with different options based on matchups and both players are capable of helping the Griffs reach their goal. “Both goalkeepers bring different qualities to the table and both are competing for playing time,” Hesch said. “They each have different strengths and weaknesses and depending on the situation, we will call on that goalkeeper.” A 2009 team captain, senior Sean Vella will anchor an experienced defensive unit this season.

Miller earned MAAC All-Rookie honors last season and led the conference with 6.86 saves per game during league games. Seymour started seven games in goal, posting a 4-3-0 record.

As arguably the most successful class in the program’s history is set to take the field for one final season, the seven Golden Griffin seniors will look to complete their college careers by accomplishing the one thing that no other class has been able to do - winning a MAAC Championship.

Forward Another unit that the Griffs can count on for strong senior leadership is the forward position with captain Alan McGreal manning the position. McGreal enters his senior campaign tied for first in the school’s record book with 75 career points and ranks third in both career goals and career assists.

“Coaches always talk about senior leadership being the difference between a good team and an average team,” said head coach Jim Hesch. “This is the biggest and one of the most talented senior classes since I’ve been here so I’m looking for that to stay true.”

“Alan is an all-around good player,” Hesch said. “He shows up each day and brings his best. His effort day in and day out is a great example for the rest of the team. Alan has been such a success on an individual level and now we are hoping to build on that and have it translated into team success.”

Since first arriving on campus, the senior class has totaled 21 wins and 11 MAAC victories, the most in any three-year period during the program’s history. During the 2006 season, the Griffs posted eight victories, the most in the school’s Division I history, and advanced to the MAAC Tournament semifinals for the second time in the program’s history.

A three-time All-MAAC selection, McGreal was responsible for 55.9 percent of the team’s scoring in 2008, registering seven goals and 12 assists. He led the MAAC and ranked sixth nationally with 0.60 assists per game.

Now the seniors will look to add that final piece of the puzzle by winning the conference championship. The Griffs welcome back 14 letterwinners from the 2008 season, including eight starters and the seven seniors, to join with 13 newcomers, forming a 2009 squad with championship expectations.

The key for the Griffs this season will be finding additional players to contribute on the offensive side. Canisius graduated its second and third-leading scorers last season and Hesch will look to newcomers Sam Margetts and Casper Rej-Kleczek to fill that role.

“Our goal every year is to win a MAAC Championship,” Hesch said. “It is what you come into each season hoping to accomplish. We think that with our mix of returning veterans and talented newcomers, that we can reach that point in 2009.”

“Sam bring a wealth of international experience, playing for the New Zealand School Boys National Team,” Hesch said. “Casper is a bigger, more goal-scoring type player who we will target to have an impact on the offensive side this season.”

Victor Gonzalez posted 12 points, four goals and four assists in his first season with the Griffs.

“We will look for those five players to have a more defensive role in the midfield this season,” Hesch said. “They will be counted on to do the dirty work for us.”

Another option at the forward position will be senior Matt Sprague. Hesch is hoping that Sprague will make the same successful transition this season as Brian Patterson did last year. Patterson finished second on the team with 13 points in 2008 after starting the first 33 games of his career as a back.

Rounding out the Griffs’ roster in 2009 include newcomers Ian Buzzio, Charles Crook, Andrew Incho, Paul Klopfer, Brian Koetter, Jared Ott and Nick Sperrazza. The seven rookies will all compete for playing time at a number of positions and will allow Hesch to use their talents based on matchups.

“Matt Sprague will compete for quality playing time,” Hesch said. “We are going to try him up front this season after seeing the success of Brian Patterson last year and we look for him to contribute to the team as a senior.”

“One of our biggest strengths this season is our versatility,” Hesch said. “We have a number of players who can play different positions and different styles. With this group of newcomers, it gives us plenty of options and allows us to play to our opponents’ weaknesses.”

Midfield Highlighting the Griffs’ returners at the midfield position is senior Victor Gonzalez, who earned All-MAAC Second Team honors in 2008. Gonzalez totaled 12 points on four goals and four assists in his first season at Canisius.

Schedule The Griffs kick off the 2009 season on Tuesday, September 1 with a home game against Drexel. Canisius will also host Cornell, Robert Morris and Dayton during the non-conference season with trips scheduled for Cincinnati, Loyola (Chicago), St. Bonaventure, Western Michigan, Duquesne and Buffalo.

Joining Gonzalez on the midfield lines will be junior Hector Rodriguez, sophomores J.J. Hughes and Jason Marks and freshman Sam Zarka. “Victor is a returning all-conference performer and will be key for us in the midfield,” Hesch said. “Jason, Sam, J.J. and Hector will look to give us offensive power from the flanks.”

The quest for the 2009 MAAC Championship begins on October 9 when the Griffs welcome Saint Peter’s to the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius will also host conference games against Manhattan, Marist and Siena and will play at Rider, Loyola (Md.), Niagara, Iona and Fairfield.

Senior Peter Leoni and sophomore Zak DuGuay will join with newcomers Greg Anne, Adam Kingston and Regan Steele at the defensive midfield position. Leoni has played in 41 games with 10 starts in his three-year career, while DuGuay scored one goal in rookie season last year.

The top four teams during the MAAC regular season will qualify for the MAAC Championship, hosted by Loyola on Nov. 13 and Nov. 15.

Jim Hesch Ninth Season Cortland State ‘94 The winningest coach in school history, Jim Hesch is in his ninth season at the helm of the Canisius College men’s soccer team. During his tenure, the Golden Griffin soccer program has seen steady signs of improvement, capped by eight overall wins and five conference victories in 2007, the most in the program’s Division I history. Canisius has won 15 games in the last two seasons, the most in any two-year span during the school’s history. The third-longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Hesch became the program’s winningest coach when the Golden Griffins defeated Marist by a score of 3-2 at home Oct. 12, 2007. The 2007 season also saw Canisius win the second MAAC Tournament game in school history as the Blue and Gold advanced to the conference tournament’s semifinal round for the second time in school history. Individual accolades have become common under Hesch during the past eight seasons. He has guided eight players to be named to the All-MAAC Team. In addition, Fabien Lewis was named the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, while Alan McGreal earned the conference’s Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and has earned all-conference honors in each of his three seasons. In addition, two MAAC New York Lottery Men’s Soccer Scholar Athletes of the Year came from Canisius as Anthony Palmiero earned the honor in 2003 and Brian Brehm won the award in 2004. The Syracuse, N.Y., native played in the National Professional Indoor Soccer League from 1995-2002, which included a stint with the Buffalo Blizzard from 1999-2000. In 2000, Hesch played in 38 games and tallied 21 goals and 14 assists. He played with the Harrisburg Heat from 1996-99 and was named an NPSL All-Star in the 1997-98 season after posting 119 points, the eighth-best single-season total in Heat history. In 2002, Hesch captured a Major Indoor Soccer League Championship as a member of the Philadelphia Kixx, tallying 36 points in 28 games. As a collegiate player, Hesch won a national championship with Southern Connecticut University in 1990 before transferring to Cortland State, where he played from 1991-93 and was named a first-team All-American. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1994. He owns a USSF A coaching license and is the president of the newly-formed Black Watch - New York West Premiere Soccer Club. Hesch and his wife, Linda, reside in Amherst with their daughter, Ryan, and son, Connor. Jim’s brother, Dave Hesch, is the associate head coach at cross-town rival the University at Buffalo.

Adam Reekie Assistant Coach First Season Canisius ‘05 A former team captain with Canisius, Adam Reekie is in his first season as assistant coach with Canisius men’s soccer team. Reekie rejoins the Griffs after spending the last two seasons as the head coach of the Louisburg College women’s soccer team, where he guided the Lady Hurricanes to a 29-11 record. During his tenure, he mentored the 2008 Region X Player of the Year in addition to seven first-team all-region student-athletes. Reekie also spent one season as an assistant coach with Lock Haven. The Griffs’ team captain in 2004, Reekie played two seasons for Canisius, starting all 34 games he played in as a defender and midfielder. He also attended Louisburg for two seasons before arriving at Canisius, earning Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2003 and helping the Hurricanes to two NJCAA National Tournaments. A native of Folkestone, England, Reekie graduated from Canisius with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He also earned his master’s in liberal arts from Lock Haven University.

Matt Hamilton Athletic Trainer Third Season Cortland State ‘05 Matt Hamilton is in his third year as a full-time athletic trainer at Canisius College after serving as a graduate assistant in the department for two years. He is responsible for the College’s men’s soccer and men’s basketball teams. He is also an approved clinical instructor in the CAATE accredited undergraduate program in athletic training at Canisius. While earning his master’s degree at Canisius in health and human performance, Hamilton was responsible for assisting with laboratory and teaching duties within the athletic training program. A native of Peru, N.Y., Hamilton served as the head athletic trainer at the 2006 and 2007 MAAC Tennis Championships at the United States Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Hamilton came to Canisius in 2005 after graduating Cum Laude from SUNY-Cortland with his bachelor’s degree in athletic training. A certified athletic trainer (NATABOC), Hamilton received Cortland’s 2005 Dr. Karel Horak Outstanding Athletic Training Student Award, as well as the school’s 2004 Athletic Training Peer Recognition Award. He currently lives in Buffalo.

Jon Rowan Strength & Conditioning Coach Second Season West Virginia Wesleyan ‘94 Jon Rowan enters his second year as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Canisius College athletic department, joining the Golden Griffins in September 2008. Rowan came to Canisius after serving as the head strength and conditioning coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the past 10 years. At RPI, he was responsible for designing, teaching and implementing year-long training and conditioning for the Engineers’ 23 varsity sports programs while also working with various faculty, staff and students. He was the supervisor and fitness educator for a 30-person student staff and also assisted with the development for the school’s weight room and strength and conditioning equipment. Rowan has served as a consultant for player performance for the Albany Conquest, an arena football team that competes in the AFL2. In addition to his strength and conditioning duties at RPI, Rowan spent five seasons as a defensive backs coach for the school’s football program. He was also an assistant football coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., and at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va. A 1994 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Rowan has certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and he is an IFA Certified Sports Nutritionist and an IFA Certified Senior Fitness Instructor.

Golden Griffin Soccer Highlights Under Head Coach Jim Hesch • Won eight games in 2007, the most in the program’s Division I history. • Won a MAAC Tournament game and advanced to the semifinals for only the second time in school history in 2007. • The senior class in 2008 graduated with more wins than any other class in the program’s history. • Fabien Lewis was named the 2003 MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while Alan McGreal earned 2006 Rookie of the Year accolades. • Eight players have earned All-MAAC honors. • Two Griffs have been honored as MAAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Academic Advisor for Athletics Services The Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius: • Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility. • Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study. • Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress. • Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans. • Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors. • Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial Program In order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.   Study hall is to be used for course work only.  A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tradition of Excellence 2008-09 Canisius Athletics Highlights • Natalia Tarasova of the synchronized swimming team won the national championship in the solo event. As a team, Canisius finished third at U.S. Collegiate National Championship. • The Canisius softball team captured its 12th MAAC Championship since 1990 to advanced to the NCAA Tournament. • The women’s basketball team won a schoolrecord 24 games and earned its second postseason invitation in the program’s history with a trip to the Women’s NIT. • Three Griffs were drafted after graduating from Canisius. Matt Friedman of the men’s lacrosse team was taken by the Buffalo Bandits in the sixth round of the NLL Draft, while Kevin Mahoney and Kevin Mailloux were selected in the MLB Draft. • Two former Griffs competed in the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup. • Three Canisius coaches were named the MAAC Coach of the Year. • Marie Warner of the women’s basketball team was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

Administration Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. President President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. has transformed Canisius College from a commuter college serving primarily the Western New York market into a residential comprehensive university drawing students from across the Northeast and beyond. Under Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius has invested nearly $142 million in 24 major capital projects on the Main street campus, including $85 million in eight major residence hall projects during this time. Plans to develop Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center at the college, are underway. Educating students for the demands of an ever-changing world is a high priority for Father Cooke. New majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, international business, accounting information systems, health and human performance and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius’ comprehensive curriculum. Canisius faculty, students and staff are heavily involved in a wide variety of service learning and volunteer activities throughout Western New York and beyond. Father Cooke received high marks in a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the college as the second most influential institution overall in terms of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also recognized by The Buffalo News as one of its Outstanding Citizens for 2001 and named the 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF). He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Niagara Lutheran Foundation, and the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York presented Father Cooke with a 2007 Citation Award for his community leadership. In early 2008, Father Cooke served as a delegate at the Jesuits’ General Congregation 35 that elected Father Adolfo Nicolas as the new General of the Society of Jesus. Father Cooke was also a delegate at General Congregation 33 in 1983 that elected Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as General. Prior to joining the Canisius community, Father Cooke served as executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University. Born in New York and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Father Cooke received a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University in 1960; a Licentiate in philosophy from Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, in 1961; master’s degrees in teaching and philosophy in 1962 and 1965; respectively, from Fordham; advanced theology degrees from Woodstock College in 1967 and Yale University in 1968; and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1971. Father Cooke’s academic area of expertise focuses on ethics, the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language. Father Cooke is currently a member of the board of trustees of Fordham University, and a member of the finance committee of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill Maher Director of Athletics Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his fifth year back in the Blue and Gold. Since taking over at Canisius, Golden Griffin athletic teams have won 18 conference or regional championships, with the softball team advancing to the NCAA Tournament in each of the past three seasons and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in the last 15 seasons. The 2008-09 women’s basketball team set the program’s Division I record with 24 wins and advanced to the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history. The 2008 women’s soccer team won a program-record six MAAC games and advanced to a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1994. The synchronized swimming program won its 12th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2009 and also finished second at the U.S. Collegiate Championships for the second consecutive season.

The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program hisCanisius College (1991-1998) tory and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. Assistant AD for Compliance Director of Intramurals and Facility Supervisor The 2008 baseball program earned a share of the regular-season title for the first time in 14 years, set a program record with 41 wins and has advanced to the MAAC Tournament each of the past three seasons while qualifying for the MAAC Championship game for the first time in 2009. The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories, qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament in 2008 for the first time since 1994 and during the past three seasons has had the most wins during any three-year stretch in program history. The hockey program has improved its standing in the Atlantic Hockey standings during each of the past three seasons. During the past four seasons, 99 student-athletes have earned all-league honors, 20 have won conference player or rookie of the year awards and 45 were voted to all-tournament teams. On the academic level during the past four athletic seasons, 273 student-athletes were named to the MAAC AllAcademic Honor Roll, while 75 hockey players made the Atlantic Hockey All-Academic Team and 15 synchronized swimmers were honored as U.S. Synchro Academic All-Americans. During the past four years, Canisius has had 13 student-athletes recognized on the district level as ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-Academic, including six during the 2008-09 academic year. Canisius has claimed the Battle of the Bridge and won the Canal Cup in each of the past two seasons, which is an all-sports competition with rival Niagara University. Maher has overseen renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in 2008 while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards. Starting with the 2007-08 academic year, Maher began a four-year term on the NCAA Division I Management Council. A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05. During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events. He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994. He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services. Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci Murphy is in her fifth year as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Women’s Administrator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joined the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Division I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the CHAMPS/Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, women’s cross country, men’s cross country, softball. She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Bills and Girl Scout Council, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports. Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC. In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas. The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, have two children, Sean (8) and Sarah (4).

John Maddock is in his 29th year with Canisius College athletics and his 13th as associate athletic director for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill., was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in 1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, marketing and promotions, licensing, the Blue & Gold Club and ticket sales. Maddock is the sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, golf, swimming and diving and synchronized swimming. The 54-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of athletics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of athletics. Maddock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season. He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the seasonlong 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04. Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va. A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee. Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena. Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information. John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela.
