“Alan was a great player for us and his talents are going to be greatly missed,” Hesch said. “But it also opens the door for other players. We are looking forward to other players stepping up and filling the void that Alan left. “This year, I think we can come together as a team and get the job done instead of relying on one individual to carry us. This just has the making for a more competitive and well-rounded group than last year. We are strong at all positions and are confident that everybody can get the job done.” Leading the Griffs during the 2010 season will be elected captains Adam Kingston and Hector Rodriguez. The two seniors each bring different experiences and will hope to help Canisius reach its goals this season. “Hector is in his fourth year here and he brings a lot of Canisius College experience,” Hesch said. “He will hopefully use that – both the good and the bad – to lead this team in a positive direction. Adam is in only his second year at Canisius but he brings a lot of experience from successful teams in the past. We are now hoping that he can bring some of that success here at Canisius.” Backs Kingston is in his second year anchoring the Canisius back line in 2010. The senior started all 19 games in his first season with the Griffs and will now need to anchor a talented but young unit. “Adam has gained a lot of experience since last year, coming into a new team with a lot of seniors,” Hesch said. “He had to sit back a little bit and take it all in but I feel over the course of the year, he has grown as a player and grown as a leader. Hopefully, it translates into a positive year.” Joining Kingston in the defensive unit is junior J.J. Hughes and newcomers Philip Smithers, Aaron Ramos-Gonzalez and Robert Ryan. Hughes is the second-most experienced player in the unit, starting nine games during his career. “We are lacking a little Canisius College experience at defense but we bring a wealth of playing experience from junior colleges or club ball,” Hesch said. “They have all accomplished a lot in their young careers and hopefully that will continue into this season.”

A senior captain, Hector Rodriguez leads all active players by appearing in 47 games as a Griff.

Gone is the winningest class in the program’s history and the school’s all-time leading scorer, but the expectations have not changed for the Canisius College men’s soccer team. The Griffs return a talented squad in 2010 and with an even deeper team, this year’s unit has visions of outperforming its predecessor.

Goalkeepers Playing behind the defensive unit this season is a trio of goalkeepers. Junior Luke Seymour, sophomore transfer Kareem Gray and freshman Ryan Arvin are all competing for playing time and the starting goalkeeper job.

“We are a more balanced and a more well-rounded team,” said Canisius head coach Jim Hesch. “With the addition of a talented class, we have a lot of depth at key positions and because of that, we will be a better team as the season progresses. With the returners that we have and with our newcomers, we have a definite chance to achieve our goals, which includes a MAAC Championship.”

“Kareem joined us in the spring after playing for the University of District Columbia,” Hesch said. “He had a really good spring season and we are looking for him to compete for the starting job with Luke, while freshman Ryan Arvin adds to our depth.”

The seven-member senior class from last season totaled 26 wins during their careers and were led by the program’s all-time leading scorer Alan McGreal. While the goals and assists tallied by McGreal will be tough to replace by one single individual, Hesch envisions each member of the team filling the hole and leading the Griffs to victories.

Seymour started the final five games of the season for the Griffs last year, posting a goals against average of 1.33 and a save percentage of .774. In his only season at the University of District Columbia, Gray registered a .724 save percentage to anchor the team’s defense.

In his first season with the Griffs, Adam Kingston was one of just three players to appear in all 19 games.

During his rookie campaign, Sam Zarka finished tied for second on the team with three assists.

Regan Steele totaled three points during his freshman season in 2009.

Midfield The midfield unit will also see a number of new faces in 2010 but will be led by a rising sophomore in Sam Zarka. As a freshman, Zarka showed his promise with five points on a goal and three assists and Hesch will look for him to take the next step in 2010.

Steele recorded three points during his rookie campaign, while Rej-Kleczek was limited to just seven games due to injury, registering one assist.

“We are looking for Sam Zarka to be our offensive threat and playmaker in the midfield,” Hesch said. “Sam is very technical and is a offensive-minded player who we think will spark the attack this season.”

Schedule The Griffs kick off the 2010 season on Wednesday, September 1 with a road contest at Drexel. Canisius then plays at Delaware on Sept. 3 before returning to the Demske Sports Complex for the team’s home opener against Buffalo on Sept. 10. The Griffs also host local rival St. Bonaventure in non-conference action, while playing at Cornell, Robert Morris, Syracuse and Dayton.

Senior Matt Sprague plus sophomores Ian Buzzio and Andrew Incho round out the unit and provide the needed depth at the position.

Newcomers Sam Guibert and Steve Mahon join Zarka in the midfield unit and will be looked toward to fill the void left by last year’s seniors. Senior Greg Anne, who netted two goals in MAAC play last season, junior Zak DuGuay, sophomore Jared Ott and freshman Justin Montero will all add depth in the central midfield position, while sophomore Paul Klopfer and freshman Zack Schwartz give the team options out wide.

The quest for the 2010 MAAC Championship begins on Oct. 8, playing host to Fairfield. Canisius also welcomes regular-season champion Iona, postseason champion Loyola, Rider and Niagara to the Demske Sports Complex and plays at Manhattan, Saint Peter’s, Siena and Marist during the conference season.

Forward The forward position is a unit that will benefit in 2010 with another year of playing experience. The two mainstays in Regan Steele and Casper RejKleczek are both back for their sophomore seasons and will be joined by junior transfer Gavin Falconer.

The top four teams during the MAAC regular season qualify for the MAAC Championship, hosted by Loyola on Nov. 12 and 14.

“We are hoping for Regan and Casper to both build off their freshman seasons,” Hesch said. “Those two players along with newcomer Gavin Falconer are the keys to us being able to put the ball in the back of the net.”

Jim Hesch 10th Season Cortland State ‘94 The winningest coach in school history, Jim Hesch is in his 10th season at the helm of the Canisius College men’s soccer team. Hesch continues to raise the bar at Canisius as he has graduated the most successful class in the program’s history following each of the past three seasons. The Class of 2009 graduated with a school-record 26 wins, capped by an eight-win total and five conference victories in 2007, the most in the program’s Division I history. The third-longest tenured head coach in the MAAC, Hesch became the program’s winningest coach when the Golden Griffins defeated Marist by a score of 3-2 at home Oct. 12, 2007. The 2007 season also saw Canisius win the second MAAC Tournament game in school history as the Blue and Gold advanced to the conference tournament’s semifinal round for the second time in school history. Individual accolades have become common under Hesch during the past nine seasons. He has mentored five players to be named to the All-MAAC Team a total of nine times, including Alan McGreal, the first four-time selection in the program’s history. Under Hesch’s leadership, McGreal, who was a member of the successful 2009 class, graduated from Canisius with school records in career points, goals and assists. McGreal also earned the conference’s Rookie of the Year award in 2006 and was a two-time all-region selection. In addition, Fabien Lewis was named the league’s Co-Defensive Player of the Year in 2003, while Anthony Palmiero and Brian Brehm were honored as the MAAC Men’s Soccer Scholar Athletes of the Year in 2003 and 2004, respectively. The Syracuse, N.Y., native played in the National Professional Indoor Soccer League from 1995-2002, which included a stint with the Buffalo Blizzard from 1999-2000. In 2000, Hesch played in 38 games and tallied 21 goals and 14 assists. He played with the Harrisburg Heat from 1996-99 and was named an NPSL All-Star in the 1997-98 season after posting 119 points, the eighth-best single-season total in Heat history. In 2002, Hesch captured a Major Indoor Soccer League Championship as a member of the Philadelphia Kixx, tallying 36 points in 28 games. As a collegiate player, Hesch won a national championship with Southern Connecticut University in 1990 before transferring to Cortland State, where he played from 1991-93 and was named a first-team All-American. He earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1994. He owns a USSF A coaching license and is the president of the newlyformed Black Watch - New York West Premiere Soccer Club. Hesch and his wife, Linda, reside in Amherst with their daughter, Ryan, and son, Connor. Jim’s brother, Dave Hesch, is the associate head coach at cross-town rival the University at Buffalo.

Adam Reekie Assistant Coach Second Season Canisius ‘05 A former team captain with Canisius, Adam Reekie is in his second season as assistant coach with Canisius men’s soccer team. Reekie rejoined the Griffs after spending two seasons as the head coach of the Louisburg College women’s soccer team, where he guided the Lady Hurricanes to a 29-11 record. During his tenure, he mentored the 2008 Region X Player of the Year in addition to seven first-team all-region student-athletes. Reekie also spent one season as an assistant coach with Lock Haven. The Griffs’ team captain in 2004, Reekie played two seasons for Canisius, starting all 34 games he played in as a defender and midfielder. He also attended Louisburg for two seasons before arriving at Canisius, earning Student-Athlete of the Year honors in 2003 and helping the Hurricanes to two NJCAA National Tournaments. A native of Folkestone, England, Reekie graduated from Canisius with a bachelor’s degree in physical education. He also earned his master’s in liberal arts from Lock Haven University.

Kevin Kotsko Athletic Trainer First Season Slippery Rock ‘95 Kevin Kotsko is in his first season as assistant athletic trainer at Canisius College where his primary responsibilities lie with the men’s basketball and men’s soccer teams. Kotsko joins the Golden Griffins after spending the previous 10 years at West Virginia University. With the Mountaineers, Kotsko worked directly with the men’s soccer, wrestling and swimming and diving teams and also served as the head trainer for the Shell Facility athletic training room. Prior to West Virginia, Kotsko spent one season as head athletic trainer at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford and three years as the head athletic trainer at Seton LaSalle High School. Kotsko also has experience as an athletic trainer with the United States Paralympics Track & Field Team and at the World Blind Track & Field Championship - both held in Brazil during August 2007. A graduate of Slippery Rock University, Kotsko earned his bachelor’s degree in health science in 1995. He also earned his master’s in physical education from the University of Virginia in 1996.

Jon Rowan Strength & Conditioning Coach Third Season West Virginia Wesleyan ‘94 Jon Rowan is in his third year as the head strength and conditioning coach for the Canisius College athletic department, joining the Golden Griffins in September 2008. Rowan came to Canisius after serving as the head strength and conditioning coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute for the past 10 years. At RPI, he was responsible for designing, teaching and implementing year-long training and conditioning for the Engineers’ 23 varsity sports programs while also working with various faculty, staff and students. He was the supervisor and fitness educator for a 30-person student staff and also assisted with the development for the school’s weight room and strength and conditioning equipment. Rowan has served as a consultant for player performance for the Albany Conquest, an arena football team that competes in the AFL2. In addition to his strength and conditioning duties at RPI, Rowan spent five seasons as a defensive backs coach for the school’s football program. He was also an assistant football coach at Methodist College in Fayetteville, N.C., and at West Virginia Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, W.Va. A 1994 graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College, Rowan has certifications with the National Strength and Conditioning Association and he is an IFA Certified Sports Nutritionist and an IFA Certified Senior Fitness Instructor.

Golden Griffin Soccer Highlights Under Head Coach Jim Hesch • Won eight games in 2007, the most in the program’s Division I history. • Won a MAAC Tournament game and advanced to the semifinals for only the second time in school history in 2007. • Each of the past three senior classes have graduated as the most successful in school history, including the Class of 2009 with 26 wins. • Fabien Lewis was named the 2003 MAAC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while Alan McGreal earned 2006 Rookie of the Year accolades. • Five players have been named to the All-MAAC Team a total of nine times, including McGreal, the first four-time selection in the program’s history. • Two Griffs have been honored as MAAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Academic Services Canisius College Academic Services provides academic, personal and career support programs that foster the total development for the studentathletes. A comprehensive program on life skills provides student-athletes with educational experiences. Service programs preparing students for the demands of a well-balanced lifestyle are also provided. Academic Services for Student-Athletes offers the guidance and direction needed to prepare student-athletes for success beyond graduation.

Academic Advisor for Athletics Services The Academic Advisor for Athletics provides the following support services to best serve the student-athletes at Canisius: • Provide effective academic advising; conduct individual advising appointments with student-athletes who have concerns abut their major choice, progress toward graduation, grades, or any other aspects that may impede their success toward graduation and NCAA eligibility. • Pay particular attention to the “at-risk” student-athletes and students who have not yet chosen a major course of study. • Schedule meetings with designated student-athletes to assist in the monitoring of academic progress. • Assist student-athletes with the development of academic recovery plans. • Develop travel contracts for student-athletes to share with their course instructors. • Provide assistant with scholarship and award applications.

Study Hall/ Tutorial Program In order to assist student-athletes in achieving optimal academic performance, the Athletic Department provides a Study Hall Program. Study hall is open to all student-athletes and is an opportunity to do academic work at consistent time in a quiet place where tutors are available to answer questions and concerns.   Study hall is to be used for course work only.  A total of six hours each week are required for all first semester freshmen and first semester transfers.

Tradition of Excellence 2009-10 Canisius Athletics Highlights • Natalia Tarasova of the synchronized swimming team won her second-straight national championship in the solo event. As a team, Canisius finished third at U.S. Collegiate National Championship. • Carl Hudson of the Canisius hockey team became the first player in the program’s history to sign a contract with an NHL team, joining the Florida Panthers. • Steve McQuail of the baseball team became the fifth Griff in the last three years to be drafted by a MLB team. McQuail was selected in the 30th round by Toronto. • Head coach Randy Mearns and former Griffs Angus Dineley ‘07 and Matt Vinc ’05 helped Canada to a silver medal at Men’s Lacrosse World Championship. • A total of 31 Canisius student-athletes were named to the all-conference team. In addition, Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year and Allison Daley earned MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Year honors. • Ian Choy of the baseball team and Michelle Fridey of the softball team were both named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Team. Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2010 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Cory Conacher was named the Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year, while Female Athlete of the Year Sylvia Kowalski earned All-MAAC and ECAC All-Star accolades.

Administration John J. Hurley President John J. Hurley was appointed the 24th president of Canisius College on Monday, October 19, 2009 by the college’s Board of Trustees and assumed the position on July 1, 2010. He is the first lay president in Canisius College’s 140-year history. A 1978 alumnus of Canisius College, Hurley has served as executive vice president of Canisius College since 2007 and vice president for college relations since 1997. In these roles, Hurley is the designated senior administrative official, responsible for the college’s strategic planning, integrated marketing, legal and compliance issues and athletics marketing. He also oversees the college’s advancement operation, which includes development, public relations, creative and Web services, alumni relations and government relations. Hurley currently directs all phases of the college’s current campaign, A Legacy of Leadership, which has a $90 million goal. He also led the college to the successful conclusion of its Imagine Canisius fund-raising campaign (1997 – 2000), which surpassed its $30 million goal by $8.8 million. The Imagine Canisius capital campaign was the most successful fund-raising effort undertaken by Canisius College and was recognized in 2001 as the top fund-raising accomplishment among the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities. Hurley played a significant leadership role in the college’s $142 million capital investment in the campus, and negotiated the college’s acquisition of the HealthNow building on Main Street. Plans are underway to convert the building into a comprehensive state-of-the-art interdisciplinary science center at Canisius. Hurley is the architect of the college’s innovative Employer Assisted Housing program, which offers incentives to Canisius employees who purchase homes in neighborhoods surrounding the college. He also led the branding initiative that developed the college’s positioning statement Canisius College: Where Leaders are Made. A native of Buffalo, Hurley graduated from St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute in Kenmore and earned a bachelor of arts degree, summa cum laude, in English and history from Canisius College. He was awarded a full scholarship to the University of Notre Dame School of Law, where he earned a juris doctor degree in 1981. Prior to Canisius, Hurley practiced law for 16 years, including 13 years at the Buffalo firm of Phillips, Lytle, Hitchcock, Blaine & Huber. He concentrated his practice in the areas of secured lending, bankruptcy and insolvency, creditors’ rights and acquisitions of troubled companies. Hurley was appointed by Bishop Edward U. Kmiec to serve on the Fidelis Care New York Board of Directors, a health maintenance organization that serves the poor in New York State. He is also chair the Bishop’s Council on the Laity for Bishop Kmiec. Hurley is a past member of the city of Buffalo’s Charter Revision Commission and past president of the St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute Board of Trustees. He is the recipient of the 2002 Canisius College Distinguished Alumnus Award, which recognizes alumni who have distinguished themselves in their chosen careers. Hurley is also a recipient of the college’s LaSalle Medal (1996), the highest honor conferred upon an alumna/us for service to alma mater, and was inducted into the Signum Fidei Society of St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute (1998). Hurley is the son of Doris Y. and the late Paul B. Hurley. He is married to Maureen O’Connell Hurley, executive vice president and chief administrative officer of Rich Products Corporation in Buffalo. They have three children: Caroline, Brian and Millie.

Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”

Bill Maher Director of Athletics Named Director of Athletics in May 2005, Bill Maher is in his sixth year back in the Blue and Gold. Since taking over at Canisius, Golden Griffin athletic teams have won 21 conference or regional championships, with the softball team advancing to the NCAA Tournament three of the past four seasons and qualifying for the NCAA Tournament 11 times in the last 16 seasons. The baseball program has won two of the last three MAAC regular-season titles and has the most wins (116) of any program in the Northeast and Midwest during the past three seasons. The synchronized swimming program won its 13th consecutive ECAC Championship in 2010 and also finished third at the U.S. Collegiate Championships for the third consecutive season. The women’s soccer team set a program record with 13 victories in 2009 and has played in two consecutive MAAC semifinals for the first time in program history. The 2008 team also won a program-record six MAAC games and advanced to a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1994. The 2008-09 women’s basketball team set the program’s Division I record with 24 wins and advanced to the Women’s NIT for the first time in program history.

The 2008 men’s lacrosse team advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history and won a share of the regular-season MAAC Championship for the second time in three seasons. The 2006 volleyball team set a program record for victories, the 2008 team qualified for a four-team MAAC Tournament for the first time since 1994 and during the past four seasons has had the most wins during any four-year stretch in program history. The hockey program has improved its record in the Atlantic Hockey standings during each of the past four seasons. The men’s swimming and diving team defeated Niagara in a dual meet in 2010 for the first time in more than 10 years while the women’s team defeated its rival at the 2009 MAAC Championships. The Class of 2009 was the winningest class in program history for the men’s soccer program. The women’s lacrosse program has qualified for the postseason four times in the last five years after never making the MAAC Tournament before the 2006 season. The men’s basketball program has improved its record during each of the last three seasons, winning 15 games in 2009-10 - the most in a decade. The current senior class earned its undergraduate degrees by the end of its junior season. The cross country teams have each won four consecutive Little Three Championships. The golf team has finished fifth at the MAAC Championships each of the past two seasons with Drew Creighton tying for first place at the 2009 MAAC Championship. During the past five seasons, 22 student-athletes have won conference player or rookie of the year awards. On the academic level, Canisius has had 16 studentathletes recognized on the district level as ESPN The Magazine CoSIDA All-Academic, including two Academic All-Americans in 2010. Canisius has claimed the Battle of the Bridge and won the Canal Cup in two of the last three seasons, which is an all-sports competition with rival Niagara University. Maher has overseen numerous renovations to the Koessler Athletic Center and the Demske Sports Complex. A new Center for Athletic Training opened in May 2007. New locker rooms were constructed for all female teams and finished in 2008 while the men and women’s basketball teams each received new locker rooms in the summer of 2008. The Demske Sports Complex received a $1.7 million facelift with the installation of new A-Turf as well as new scoreboards. New offices for coaches along with new locker rooms for all of the men’s teams were constructed in 2010. Maher is the MAAC’s representative to the NCAA Legislative Council, which has one representative from each of the 31 Division I conferences. A Canisius graduate and former assistant athletic director at the school, Maher spent seven years at the University at Buffalo and served as the Bulls’ interim athletic director from 2003-05. During his tenure as the interim athletic director at Buffalo, Maher helped UB Athletics oversee $3.6 million in capital improvements to its athletic facilities, restructure the school’s Blue & White Club fund drive for athletics, which generated $1 million during the 2003-04 season, and develop marketing campaigns which increased attendance at athletic events. He also oversaw the development of the men’s basketball program, which set a school record for victories and earned the first postseason bid in school history with an invitation to the 2005 National Invitation Tournament. Under his watch, the Bulls’ RPI increased from 284 in 2003 to as high as 34 during the 2004-05 season. Maher was a four-year letterwinner on the Canisius College football team from 1985-88 and earned All-America honorable mention honors as a senior. He received his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 1989 and his master’s degree in sport management from East Stroudsburg University in 1990. Following an internship with the New York Knicks, Maher returned to Canisius in 1991, becoming the assistant athletic director for compliance in 1994. He became the director of compliance at the University at Buffalo in 1998, where he moved up the ranks and was named senior associate athletic director in 2002. In that role, he managed the day-to-day operations of the Division of Athletics, including the direct supervision of Buffalo’s football and men’s and women’s basketball programs, in addition to the office of compliance and the office of student-athlete services. Maher resides in East Amherst with his wife, Kristin, and sons, Danny and David.

Traci Murphy is in her sixth year as Associate Athletic Director and Senior Woman’s Administrator for the Golden Griffins. Murphy joined the Canisius staff after spending seven seasons at the University of Louisiana at Monroe. Murphy is responsible for all NCAA rules enforcement of Canisius’ 16 Division I athletic programs in addition to all areas of student-athlete welfare. She supervises compliance, academic counseling, strength and conditioning and athletic training. She also oversees the Life Skills program, and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Murphy is the sport supervisor for women’s soccer, men’s soccer, volleyball, women’s cross country, men’s cross country and softball. She serves on MAAC committees for Athletic Administration, Finance, Gender and Minority Issues, Women’s Basketball and chairs the MAAC Swimming and Diving Committee. She also organizes the annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) at Canisius and helped found the WNY Girls in Sports Program. The program, in collaboration with the City of Buffalo Public Schools, area colleges and universities, the Buffalo Bills, focuses specifically on young girls (ages 9-12) and their involvement in sports. Murphy began her career in 1992 as associate head athletic trainer at St Mary’s and moved to ULM in 1998. She added the responsibility of senior woman administrator in 2001 which involved the monitoring of women’s sports and mentoring the SAAC. In July 2003, she was promoted to the position of director of academics, compliance and student-athlete services. Murphy worked to develop and implement an enhanced academic development and compliance program for ULM’s student-athletes and the athletics department. Prior to ULM, Murphy served five years as the head athletic trainer at St. Mary’s College of Maryland. She is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University with a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. In 1992, Murphy earned a master’s degree in health education from the University of Arkansas. The Maryland native and her husband, Pat, a vice-principal at Amherst Central High School, have two children, Sean (9) and Sarah (5).

John Maddock is in his 30th year with Canisius College athletics and his 14th as associate athletic director for external affairs. Originally hired as the Golden Griffins’ sports information director, the native of Washington, Ill., was named an assistant athletic director prior to the 1987-88 season and moved into his current position in 1997. Maddock is responsible for corporate partnerships, marketing, promotions and merchandise sales, licensing, special fund-raising events and over sees the operations of the ticket office. Maddock is the sport supervisor for hockey, baseball, swimming and diving and synchronized swimming. The 55-year-old Maddock oversaw the operation of the department of athletics during Spring 2005 before Bill Maher was named the director of athletics. Maddock also assisted the MAAC with plans for its 25th Anniversary celebration during the 2005-06 athletic season. He chaired the search committee for the Griffs’ head football coach in 2000 and men’s soccer coach in 1998. He serves on the Hall of Fame and the MLK Awards Selection Committees and oversaw the development of the athletic department’s current logo. He was also instrumental in planning the season-long 100-year anniversary celebration for men’s basketball in 2003-04. Maddock arrived at Canisius in July 1981 after spending two-and-a-half years as the administrative assistant to the athletic director at Brockport State College. Prior to his job at Brockport, he was the ticket manager for the Atlanta Braves Triple-A farm club in Richmond, Va. A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor’s degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master’s degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) and the former chair of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee and is on the Board of Directors for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame and is a member of the MAAC Baseball Committee. Maddock spent two seasons as the public relations director for the North Atlantic Conference and served as the host for the 1990 ECAC-SIDA conference at the Buffalo Hilton. He chaired the Baseball Committee for the 1993 World University Games and was the assistant media coordinator for the 2000 NCAA Division I men’s basketball opening round games played at Buffalo’s HSBC Arena. Maddock was honored in 1998 by ECAC-SIDA with the Irving T. Marsh Award for contributions, dedication and excellence in the field of collegiate sports information. John and his wife, Priscilla, reside in Snyder with their daughters Mackenzie and Mikaela.
