MEN’S LACROSSE • SEASON PREVIEW

lost their five conference games by a combined seven goals. “Our leadership is strong this season,” Mearns said “We now know that we need to work our butts off and be as prepared as possible and with that, we think the one-goal games can go our way. The MAAC is so tight and there is so much parity, so we need to play a full 60 minutes to win in this conference.” Offense Each of the last two seasons, Canisius had been led by the high-scoring duo of Adam Jones and Nick LoCoco. The two entered as freshmen in 2008 and immediately led the Griffs to unchartered success. Now as the two enter the junior campaigns, one looks to continue his successful career, while the other will start the season on the sideline hoping for a return in 2010. A preseason All-American by Inside Lacrosse, Jones has led the Griffs in goals in each of the last two seasons, recording 38 as a freshman and 33 last season. The Preseason MAAC Player of the Year, Jones has led all midfielders nationally in goals in each of his two seasons. “Adam is a unique player,” Mearns said. “He just has a presence. You have to develop schemes and try to keep the ball out of his hands if possible. He is gifted with the stick, has great vision and he can finish with the best of them. What really separates Adam from others is that he can create his own shot.” LoCoco, however, will start the season on the sideline for Canisius due to a leg injury hoping for a return this season. In 2009, LoCoco led the Griffs with 39 points on eight goals and 31 assists. The quarterback of the Canisius offense, LoCoco ranked third nationally with 2.38 assists per game.

Adam Jones has led all midfielders nationally in goals during his first two seasons at Canisius.

“There is an outside chance that Nick can get back, but we need to be ready and have guys step up and fill the hole left by him,” Mearns said. “As much as we can’t replace him, somebody needs to step up and replace him.”

The 2008 Canisius College men’s lacrosse team was the most successful in the program’s history. The Griffs won a school-record 10 games, earned their second MAAC regular-season title in three years, won their first MAAC Tournament Championship and advanced to their first NCAA Tournament.

Mearns will look for a group of players to fill the void left by LoCoco and to spread out an attack that was too reliant on two players last season. Jones accounted for more than a third of the Griffs’ goals last season, while LoCoco recorded more than half of the team’s assists.

Returning a good portion of their championship team, the Griffs had high expectations entering the 2009 season. However, a string of close defeats led to Canisius finishing short of its goals.

“We need to create more offensive opportunities and not rely on one or two players to be are only threats,” Mearns said. “We relied on Adam and Nick last year but we need other players to step up this year. We need better offensive schemes and other players to create. I think that we are getting to that point.”

“I think we couldn’t break out of the mindset that we were good and are just going to win,” said Canisius head coach Randy Mearns. “We didn’t work hard enough and that responsibility is on my shoulders and I won’t let that happen again. We just thought we were going to win because of our talent.”

The players that Mearns will look toward to create some scoring depth are seniors Mike Benzinger and Alex Caldiero, juniors Greg Michael and Tom Vivian and sophomores Mike Allaire, Jon Domres, Simon Giourmetakis, Jimmy Haney and Brendan O’Hagan.

The good news for Canisius is that it should not be a long journey back to the top. Six of the top eight scorers from the 2008 team remain on the roster and mixed with two talented classes, the Griffs are primed and determined to once again contend for the MAAC Championship.

“We need those guys to take their experiences from last year and build off them,” Mearns said. “They are all very skilled players with a lot of talent. They are all a year older with more experience and we need them to step up this season and help contribute to our success.”

“We have a bitter taste in our mouth from last season,” Mearns said. “We have grown a lot from last year. We are more focused and there is more energy. We are more athletic and there is more cohesion on offense and defense.”

Benzinger, Caldiero and Michael combined to record 43 points and 30 goals during the Griffs’ MAAC Championship season of 2008, but had their totals slip to 11 points and six goals last season. Mearns expects

Also, with a better and more prepared attitude, Canisius looks to turn the close defeats into wins. Last season, the Griffs weren’t that far off as they

Mike Benzinger, a senior captain, totaled 17 points and 12 goals during the Griffs’ 2008 championship run.

Tim Rowley placed 11th nationally last season by winning 56.6 percent of his faceoffs.

the three to reclaim their success from two years ago and lead the young attacking group.

Defender Matt Barkas earend second-team All-MAAC accolades in 2009.

Goaltender For the third-straight season, Canisius must replace its last line of defense. In 2009, Bryan Jack started all 13 games in goal, posting a goals against average of 9.49 and a save percentage of .508.

“We need our seniors and juniors to lead the way on attack,” Mearns said. “The increased production starts with them and will hopefully spread to our younger players. The sophomores are now more skilled and are in better shape and we hope that translates to more production as well this season.”

Filling the hole this season will be sophomores Sean Callahan and Kyle Bell. The two combined to play just 22 minutes of action during their freshman seasons learning the ropes of Division I lacrosse but have shown a lot of promise early in the spotlight.

Defense While some questions remain on offense, the defense is a tight group and will provide a steady front on the back line.

“We are excited about our goaltenders,” Mearns said. “They didn’t get a ton of experience last year but they both worked their tails off all summer and fall. They worked on their sticks and they worked on their position and our defense has a lot of confidence in them. They have shown all the dedication and hard work to do it.”

“I think the strength of our team this year is our defensive midfielders and our defensive core,” Mearns said. “We have a tight knit group of 10 guys. We are excited because they are all athletic and they have size.”

Schedule The Griffs one again face a daunting schedule in 2010, highlighted by hosting perennial power Cornell.

Anchoring the unit is 2009 second-team All-MAAC honoree Matt Barkas. Last season, Barkas led the Griffs with 22 caused turnovers and finished second on the team with 68 ground balls. Barkas will team with seniors Dan Coates and Garrett O’Neill plus sophomores Alex Nowak and Ryan O’Hagan on close defense.

“Hosting Cornell is the biggest home game in our program’s history,” Mearns said. “Having an established powerhouse come our place is great for Western New York lacrosse and will only help our program grow.”

Senior Tim Rowley, juniors Drew Caldiero and Mike Rautenstrauch, sophomore Justin Maderer and freshman Hugh Weir will lead the Griffs’ defensive midfield unit this season.

The Big Red advanced to the NCAA Championship Game last season and enter 2010 ranked sixth nationally. Canisius opens the season at No. 14 Harvard on Feb. 27 and also plays Hobart at home and at Denver and Robert Morris in non-conference action.

“I’m really excited about our defenders this season,” Mearns said. “They all know the defense and when to slide. I think this is the best athletic group of defenders we have had in the program. We have some size that will help us with some matchups because the sport of lacrosse is just getting bigger.”

Canisius opens MAAC play at Mount St. Mary’s on March 20 before returning home to face Manhattan on March 27. The Griffs also host Marist, Detroit and Siena in conference action, while traveling to face Saint Joseph’s, Wagner and VMI.

Rowley will also anchor the team in faceoffs this season. The senior ranked 11th nationally last season by winning 56.6 percent of his draws and 10th with 6.15 ground balls per game. Mader and Brendan O’Hagan provide additional options at the X

The top four teams in the MAAC regular season qualify for the MAAC Championship, held on the campus of Marist on May 7 and 9.

Randy Mearns Head Coach • 12th Season • Canisius ‘92, ‘02 Guiding the Canisius College men’s lacrosse program to new heights during his coaching career, Randy Mearns is in his 12th season leading his alma mater. Mearns has enjoyed a number of memorable moments during his 11year coaching career, highlighted by a magical 2008 campaign. Among the many bright spots, Mearns’ 10th season leading the Griffs included:

• • • •

• The Griffs earned their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. • Canisius won its first MAAC Championship, posting dominating victories over Manhattan (11-2) and VMI (14-5) en route to the title. Mearns mentored the Griffs’ first All-American during the 2008 season. Adam Jones was honored by USILA and was one of only three freshmen in the country to earn All-America accolades. The Griffs won the MAAC regular-season title for the second time in three seasons. Canisius also earned a share of the 2006 championship. Nick LoCoco was named the MAAC Rookie of the Year, marking the second-straight season a Griff earned the honor. Tim Rowley was named the conference’s Co-Rookie of the Year in 2007. Canisius set school records with 10 wins and seven conference victories. The Griffs also set a program record with eight-consecutive wins during the season, doubling the previous standard.

The 2008 season is just one of the many highlights during Mearns’ successful coaching tenure. In his 11 seasons, Canisius has won 62 games and 49 conference games. Mearns led the Griffs to their first postseason appearance in 2003, earning a trip to the MAAC Tournament. Canisius has since participated in five of the last seven tournaments, winning its first title in 2008. Individual success has also been a common theme under Mearns. A total of 19 Griffs have earned all-conference accolades, including Jones, LoCoco and Matt Barkas following the 2009 campaign. Along with Rowley and LoCoco, Kevin Ross was another Griff to earn an individual accolade, picking up MAAC Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2006. Mearns has also helped guide many of his student-athletes to the next level. Four Canisius standouts have been selected in the first round of the National Lacrosse League (NLL) Draft in the last seven seasons. Mark Miyashita, who graduated from Canisius in 2003, was the first overall selection in the 2003 draft. Mearns also was an assistant coach on the Canadian national team that won the gold medal at the 2006 World Lacrosse Championship. The team was inducted into the Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2007 and Mearns also earned induction into the Ontario Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2008. The Canisius head coach will once be on the sidelines for the 2010 World Lacrosse Championship. While coaching the Griffs, playing in the NLL and working as an investment advisor, Mearns conquered another personal goal and again graduated from Canisius College with a master’s in sport administration in 2002. Playing Career After helping the Canadian Junior National Team to a silver medal in the 1988 World Championships, Mearns was part of the first Canisius College recruiting class in 1989. Under former head coach Ed Van Tine, Mearns thrived offensively during his three-year stay and currently ranks second in career scoring with 190 points. He also still holds the single-season records for points (94) and assists (49) and is the Griff’s all-time leader in assists (95). Upon graduating cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in finance, Mearns was drafted by the Buffalo Bandits in the 1992 entry draft and was a member of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League World Champion Bandits team in 1993. Mearns joined the Rochester Knighthawks in 1995. As their team captain, he lead the Knighthawks to four championship appearances (‘96, ‘97, ‘99, and ‘00) during his seven-year tenure and raised the Champions Cup with a 1997 victory over his former team, the Buffalo Bandits. In the summer of 2001, the 1999 NLL All-Star Game MVP was picked up by the Calgary Roughnecks in the National Lacrosse League expansion draft and was immediately traded back to the Bandits. The 2002 season saw Mearns have his best offensive output in his nine-year career, scoring 14 goals and dishing out 24 assists for 38 points. Balancing out the winter and spring months while at Canisius and playing professionally, Mearns played in the Canadian Junior A and Canadian Senior A Lacrosse Leagues. During a 10-year stint beginning in 1990, Mearns appeared in eight National Championships, five of them as team captain. Of these eight appearances, Mearns and his teammates were crowned champions six times. They include the 1990 Minto Cup Champion St. Catharines Athletics, the Mann Cup Champion Brampton Excelsiors (‘92, ‘93) and the Mann Cup Champion Six Nation Chiefs (‘94, ‘95’ ‘96).

The Start of a Coaching Career While succeeding as a player, Mearns was also heavily involved in developing and coaching field lacrosse in the traditional box lacrosse hotbed of his hometown of St. Catharines, Ontario. He was the co-founder, coach, administrator and fundraiser of St. Catharines minor field lacrosse and was a significant participant in the development of the Ontario Minor Field Lacrosse League; A league that started with just under 10 teams in the early 90’s and presently flourishes with over 140 teams. In 1994, Mearns relinquished many of his duties with the St. Catharines minor program and took over the Junior and Senior Niagara Raiders field lacrosse teams. In 1996, he was named as an assistant coach on the Canadian Junior National team that competed in the World Championships in Japan and helped guide the Canadians to a bronze medal finish. A year later, the assistant coaching job at Canisius was vacated and Mearns returned to Canisius to serve under Mike Greco. Returning with a silver medal from the 1998 World Championships in Baltimore where Mearns served as a tri-captain for the Canadian men’s team, he found himself with a glorious opportunity. Greco, after six years at the helm, stepped down as the head men’s lacrosse coach and Mearns was offered the job by retired Canisius athletic director Dan Starr. A 2005 inductee into the Canisius College Sports Hall of Fame, Mearns and his wife Connie reside in East Amherst with their two sons, Tanner and Owen.

Greg Campbell Assistant Coach • Third Season • Canisius ‘04 Former Golden Griffin standout and assistant coach for the 2008 MAAC Championship squad, Greg Campbell is in his first season back on the sidelines for the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team. Campbell, who is in his third season overall as assistant coach, also spent the 2007 and 2008 seasons with the Griffs. In his first stint with Canisius, Campbell helped lead the Griffs to their first MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance in 2008 as the team’s defensive coordinator. During its run through the MAAC Tournament, Canisius allowed only seven total goals in two games en route to the conference title. As a player with Canisius, Campbell played in 53 games, recording 99 points, 62 goals and 37 assists. He ranks 15th in the program’s history in both career points and career goals and helped lead the Griffs to their first two postseason trips in 2003 and 2004. Campbell earned a bachelor’s degree in history from Canisius in 2004 and his master’s of business administration in 2008.

Jason Levesque Assistant Coach • Second Season • Canisius ‘04 Jason Levesque is in his second season as an assistant coach for the Golden Griffin men’s lacrosse program. Levesque assists with the day-to-day operations of the program and serves as the team’s defensive and recruiting coordinator. Levesque returned to his alma mater in August 2008 after spending three years at Lees-McRae College in Banner Elk, North Carolina. The St. Catharines, Ontario native led the Bobcats’ defense and recruiting efforts during his time in North Carolina, with the 2007 team finishing the season with the fifth-ranked man-down defense in the country. A member of the first two teams at Canisius to earn a MAAC Championship berth, Levesque played for the Golden Griffins from 2000 to 2004. A defensive midfielder, Levesque recorded six points, four goals, two assists and 101 ground balls during his career. Levesque also played in the Ontario Lacrosse Association and Major Series Lacrosse for his hometown St. Catharines Athletics junior and senior teams. In 2001, he helped the Athletics win the Minto Cup, awarded to the top junior team in Canada. Levesque earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Canisius in 2004 and in sports management from Lees-McRae in 2008. He is currently pursuing his master’s in sport administration at Canisius.

Brian Lalley Volunteer Assistant Coach • First Season • Ohio State ‘09 Brian Lalley is in his first season as a volunteer assistant coach with the Canisius College men’s lacrosse team. Lalley joins the Golden Griffin program after wrapping up a four-year playing career with Ohio State. In 45 career games with the Buckeyes, the midfielder totaled 14 points, nine goals, five assists and eight ground balls. Lalley was also a two-year starter at Orchard Park High School, earning All-America, first-team All-Western New York and first-team All-ECIC honors. A three-time Academic All-Big Ten Selection, Lalley earned his bachelor’s degree from Ohio State in consumer affairs with a minor in business and a concentration in coaching. He is pursuing his master’s in sport administration at Canisius.

Department of Athletics What is a Griffin? The Griffin is a mythical creature of supposed gigantic size that has the head, forelegs and wings of an eagle and the hindquarters, tail and ears of a lion. They are well known for their speed, ability to fly and having eyes like an eagle as well as the strength and courage of a lion. Griffins have been known for centuries as symbols of strength and vigilance, have been called “The Hounds of Zeus” in Greek mythology and are said to have mastery of both the land and sky. They are thought to be from India, where the natives of the land made their talons and claws into drinking cups because the talon of a Griffin was said to detect poison in a liquid. Griffins would find gold in the mountains and line their nests with it and as a result, were forced to become great guardians of the nests to keep the hunters away. According to Charles A. Brady in Canisius College The First Hundred Years, “Though the problems of when and where the Griffin began his reign as King Herald of the Canisius College of Arms are not easily settled, the whence is simple to establish. Our Griffin flew to us from the prow of LaSalle’s lost Griffon, the Flying Dutchman of the Great Lakes, which disappeared after making a safe voyage from the Niagara River to the Strait of Detroit. LaSalle’s illfated caravel, the first ship ever built on America’s inland seas, with its 45 tons and five cannons, had its beakhead adorned ‘with a flying Griffin, and an eagle above it,’ in honor of the two heraldic beasts on the armorial bearing of the great Frontenac.” The Griffin became the symbol for Canisius athletics in the mid-1930s. Steve Weller wrote in The Buffalo News Jan. 22, 1962, “You can have your Chihuahuas, Piranhas, Horned Frogs and Iguanas. The best all-around athletic mascot in business today has to be the beast adopted by Canisius College – the Golden Griffin.”

2009 Canisius Male Athlete of the Year Kevin Mailloux was drafted by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009 MLB Draft, while Female Athlete of the Year Natalia Tarasova won the solo event at the U.S. Collegiate Championships.

Administration Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. President President of Canisius College since 1993, Rev. Vincent M. Cooke, S.J. has transformed Canisius College from a commuter college serving primarily the Western New York market into a residential comprehensive university drawing students from across the Northeast and beyond. Under Father Cooke’s leadership, Canisius has invested nearly $142 million in 24 major capital projects on the Main street campus, including $85 million in eight major residence hall projects during this time. Plans to develop Science Hall, an interdisciplinary science center at the college, are underway. Educating students for the demands of an ever-changing world is a high priority for Father Cooke. New majors in emerging fields such as bioinformatics, international business, accounting information systems, health and human performance and digital media arts have recently been added to Canisius’ comprehensive curriculum. Canisius faculty, students and staff are heavily involved in a wide variety of service learning and volunteer activities throughout Western New York and beyond. Father Cooke received high marks in a Buffalo News poll of Western New York leaders which ranked Father Cooke as the second most influential civic leader and the college as the second most influential institution overall in terms of their positive impact on the community. Father Cooke was also recognized by The Buffalo News as one of its Outstanding Citizens for 2001 and named the 2003 Renaissance Man by the Buffalo Renaissance Foundation (BRF). He received the 2005 Humanitarian Award from the Niagara Lutheran Foundation, and the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC) of Western New York presented Father Cooke with a 2007 Citation Award for his community leadership. In early 2008, Father Cooke served as a delegate at the Jesuits’ General Congregation 35 that elected Father Adolfo Nicolas as the new General of the Society of Jesus. Father Cooke was also a delegate at General Congregation 33 in 1983 that elected Father Peter-Hans Kolvenbach as General. Prior to joining the Canisius community, Father Cooke served as executive and academic vice president of John Carroll University. Born in New York and raised in Hoboken, NJ, Father Cooke received a bachelor of arts degree from Fordham University in 1960; a Licentiate in philosophy from Loyola Seminary, Shrub Oak, in 1961; master’s degrees in teaching and philosophy in 1962 and 1965; respectively, from Fordham; advanced theology degrees from Woodstock College in 1967 and Yale University in 1968; and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in 1971. Father Cooke’s academic area of expertise focuses on ethics, the theory of knowledge and the philosophy of language. Father Cooke is currently a member of the board of trustees of Fordham University, and a member of the finance committee of the New York Province of the Society of Jesus.

Dr. Ellen Conley Vice President for Student Affairs Ellen O. Conley, PhD, a member of the Canisius Community since 1970, was named vice president for student affairs in 1998. One of her many accomplishments in her role as vice president includes spearheading the upgrade of the athletics program at the college. Dr. Conley earned a bachelor’s degree from Slippery Rock State College (1967), advanced education degrees from the University of Pittsburgh (1968) and Buffalo State (1973) and a doctorate in higher education from the University at Buffalo (1981). During her tenure as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Conley supported the formation of the School of Education and Human Services, developed a mentoring program for new faculty, initiated the development of majors in criminal justice and environmental science and guided the initiative to implement a Master of Science in Organizational Communication and Development. She also established the Fine Arts Department and facilitated the development of MusiCanisius, which has since evolved into the ArtsCanisius program. While acting dean, she coordinated the promotion of the school’s graduate education program to the Canadian market and guided the implementation of the Master in Sport Administration. From 1987-89, Dr. Conley was the assistant director of athletics for women’s sports and financial aid, and from 1987-90, she was the athletic scholarship coordinator. Under her direction, the women’s athletic program was formed and grew from one club level team to seven varsity teams. In addition, she implemented and monitored an athletic scholarship program for men’s and women’s non-revenue producing sports. From 1982-1990 Dr. Conley served as chair of the undergraduate Physical Education Major Program and Coordinator of the Physical Education Graduate Program. In 1989, she developed alternative curricular tracks for physical education majors to enhance enrollment, and in 1986, she co-wrote the New York State Professional Preparation Council’s position paper for “Strengthening Teaching in New York State.”
