MISSIO N IN AC TION A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT This is a special time for Canisius as we celebrate our sesquicentennial anniversary and reflect with great pride on the college’s rich history of excellence and leadership in the city of Buffalo and all of Western New York. This year’s launch of the New Buffalo Institute (NBI) at Canisius is a testament to the college’s continuing efforts to further the city’s growth and development by using all of our resources – research, service and educational programming. Rooted in the Jesuit ideal of faith that does justice, the NBI provides a vehicle for refocusing and prioritizing the college’s existing connections and activities in the community and developing new initiatives to better align our efforts with community needs and priorities. This year also marks an unprecedented time for our city, region and country. As we face the COVID-19 pandemic, our college community continues to show what it means to live our Jesuit mission. Our faculty, staff and students have been volunteering in the community with myriad agencies. Our students are holding fundraisers and delivering food to those in need. Our faculty are working on the development of ventilators to supplement shortages, and serving as experts in the media for an array of topics related to the pandemic including its economic impact. Our Women’s Business Center is providing resources and counseling to local businesses. And when Catholic Health put out a call for personal protective equipment, members of our Biology Department answered with a delivery of 6,000 pairs of nitrile gloves to Mercy Hospital in South Buffalo. We are also thankful for our alumni healthcare workers across the country for their selfless devotion to combat this pandemic and protect our communities. I am extremely proud of the tangible differences Canisius is making in our community,

THE MOVEMENT TO RESTORE TRUST (MRT) In October 2018, President John J. Hurley was instrumental in establishing The Movement to Restore Trust with a group of eight concerned, Catholic lay people. The MRT was formed to assert the laity’s rightful role in the church, and to help lead a movement to restore trust and confidence in the church in the wake of the shocking disclosures about the Diocese’s handling of sex abuse cases involving clergy in Buffalo. Following a series of public symposia hosted by Canisius, meetings with church leaders and coordination with Leadership Roundtable, a national organization that promotes best practices in church management, the MRT made bold recommendations about the future of the church in Buffalo and worked with the faithful in this community to discern the qualities necessary in the next Bishop of Buffalo. President Hurley, the role of the college, and the MRT have been nationally recognized for their great pastoral work on behalf of the Diocese of Buffalo by Catholic media and Leadership Roundtable. President Hurley received the 2019 St. Thomas More Award from Buffalo’s St. Thomas More Guild.

especially at this time in our history, and pleased to share our accomplishments through this Impact Report.

ALTERNATIVE POWER CONTRIBUTES TO REDUCTION IN CARBON FOOTPRINT Canisius is committed to addressing sustainability, both in terms of the college’s operations and the education of our students about the global climate crisis and our collective responsibility to address it. Canisius developed a new sustainability plan that positions the college to reduce consumption and introduce new green practices. Among its initiatives, Canisius partnered with BQ Energy to develop an off-campus solar energy field. The project, completed in August 2015, generates solar energy, which is sold to National Grid for electric credits.

EMPLOYER ASSISTED HOUSING (EAH)

Canisius celebrated the successful conclusion of its Hamlin Park Initiative in 2019. Created in 2010 by President John J. Hurley, the housing initiative returned college-owned homes in the historic Hamlin Park neighborhood to owner-occupiers.

Neighborhood safety begins with the Public Safety Department. It is important that our students, faculty, staff and neighbors are able to work, study and live in an environment that is safe and secure.

Canisius believes in the strength of its surrounding neighborhoods. The Employer Assisted Housing program, established in 2002, was the first of its kind in Western New York to provide forgivable loans to employees who purchase homes in the areas surrounding the college.

SOCIAL IM PAC T MEN AND WOMEN FOR AND WITH OTHERS

SERVICE LEARNING

St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, dedicated the Jesuits in service to the cities and the people who live there. In keeping with this Jesuit tradition, we believe it’s not enough to live in our community. We have a responsibility to help transform it for the good of others.

The union of academics and community is what service learning is all about. It’s a teaching method that engages students in organized service activities to benefit the community and those receiving the service.
