In this bustling world, it’s tough to find time to stop…to think…to explore an idea to its very core. But here, it’s easy. Our academic approach is firmly rooted in Ignatian contemplation. You won’t just explore a variety of subjects, you’ll think deeply about individual ideas. You’ll have time to reflect, to exercise your imagination and put it to use solving the problems of the world.

02 JESUIT TRADITION

Whatever your faith, you are welcome here. Our Jesuit heritage dates back 450 years, but we continually reinvent its expression. Every day, we explore new ideas. We search for truth. We take time to reflect. We serve others. At Canisius, you’ll think from new perspectives and discover new abilities. You’ll consider what you stand for. You’ll explore your faith and work with a purpose. You’ll prepare for a fulfilling life.

SPIRIT At Canisius, you’ll be challenged on many levels. It’s a part of our Jesuit education, built around ideals like cura personalis – “care for the whole person,” the pursuit of excellence and finding the good in all things. It’s built around magis (being and doing more), justice and living as men and women for others. These may sound elaborate, but the ideas aren’t complex. They just mean we’ll give you a strong and broad foundation that will expand your mind, strengthen your body, and enrich your spirit. No matter your field of study, you’ll take core curriculum courses that will prepare you—mind, body, and spirit—for whatever adventures lie ahead. Here, you’ll learn to… express your thoughts effectively Cogent Writing — gather and analyze ideas Information Literacy — think across disciplines Breadth of Knowledge — appreciate differences Diversity — strive for what is right Ethics — see from many perspectives Global Awareness — treat all people fairly Justice — exchange ideas Effective OraL Communication — work for the sake of others Public Service

There’s an old saying that reads: “The hardest thing in the world is to convince someone to move to Buffalo. The second hardest thing in the world is to convince them to leave.” We love our city, and we’re confident you’ll feel right at home.

At the beginning of his career, he joined the Peace Corps. There were three choices to help determine his placement location: urban, semi-rural, and rural. He checked “rural” and wrote, “Put me in a place where no Peace Corps volunteer has ever been.” They placed him in Swaziland, Africa, where he taught math and science in a sparse cinderblock building. Now, he’s an expert on financial and information systems auditing and a published author on diffusion of innovation. He serves on the Board at the Boys and Girls Club of East Aurora, NY. He’s a Certified Public Accountant and a Certified Information Systems Auditor. He is an avid golfer. You’d think someone like this would work at, say, PricewaterhouseCoopers. He used to. But now he’s a professor of accounting. He’s chair of the department and an award-winning teacher. This is Joseph O’Donnell, PhD. If he doesn’t have all the answers, he probably knows where to look.
