Canisius College Community Report 2014

MEssAGE FROM PREsIDENT JOHN J. HURLEY Canisius College isn’t just located in Buffalo. We’re part of Buffalo and the region. for nearly 145 years, it has been our home. And like any good neighbor, we take an active role in helping to further the city’s growth and development by using our resources – intellectual, financial and spiritual – to support and enrich the Western New York community. Our core mission is to prepare outstanding graduates, many of whom will actively contribute to the intellectual capital and leadership of our region. But universities do so much more. At Canisius, our faculty contribute their expertise to the region’s business and service organizations. Administrators volunteer their knowledge and resources on countless community boards. The campus community, as a whole, shares its commitment to the city of Buffalo and all of Western New York, through a number of partnerships, outreach and service initiatives. Our efforts are palpable as evidenced on the following pages of this Community Report for Canisius College.

Canisius is a medium-sized institution that has a big impact on the local economy. The faculty and staff we employ, the purchases we make and the capital projects we complete create economic benefits throughout the region. Our 2012-13 annual budget of $93,000,000 would rank Canisius as the 12th largest private company in Western New York.*

sCIENCE HALL Canisius is a leader in science education and our newly-opened Science Hall enables us to build upon that academic strength. Canisius has completed Phase 1 of the facility’s renovation, which now houses the Institute for Autism Research, the George E. Schreiner ’43, Md, Pre-Medical Center and the departments of Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematics and Statistics. When completed, the facility will consolidate all of Canisius’ science programs under one roof. The outstanding preparation students receive at Canisius will contribute to the world-class research already underway in Western New York’s growing life sciences industry.

“Just as we are creating a world-class medical facility in downtown Buffalo, it is exciting that Canisius is creating a world-class undergraduate science learning center just a few blocks away.” MATTHEW K. ENSTICE MBA ’04, president and executive director of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus and member of the college’s Science Advisory Council.

Canisius’ commitment to community begins right in our own backyard. It is the college’s driving philosophy that all initiatives must enhance the historic Hamlin Park community as well as Canisius College.

Hurley and conducted in partnership with Belmont Housing Resources, the Hamlin Park Initiative is a housing program designed to refurbish and return college-owned homes in the Hamlin Park neighborhood to owner-occupiers. Canisius has also donated college-owned homes to Habitat for Humanity. The Canisius chapter partners with Habitat for Humanity Buffalo on most Saturdays throughout the school year to help those in need achieve the dream of home ownership.

EMPLOYER AssIsTED HOUsING PROGRAM Canisius established the Employer Assisted Housing (EAH) Program in 2002. The first program of its kind in Western New York, the Canisius EAH Program provides forgivable loans to employees who purchase homes in the areas surrounding the college. The program encourages Canisius employees to live in the city and to contribute to the uplift of the neighborhoods surrounding the campus. Since its establishment, 38 employees have benefitted from the program. ANdREW d. STEWART, PHd, ASSISTANT PROfESSOR Of BIOLOGY >

officer authority. Canisius officers patrol the safety and quality of life for all residents. Our Public Safety department works closely with the Buffalo Police department (BPd) and the Niagara frontier Transportation Authority (NfTA). This relationship is facilitated by Canisius’ computer-aided dispatch system, which enables the college to share information with the BPd and other local law enforcement agencies. In addition, all of our supervisors are trained at the same level as New York State police lieutenants. GARY M. EVERETT, dIRECTOR Of PUBLIC SAfETY

St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, dedicated the Jesuits in service to the cities and the people who live there. In keeping with this Jesuit tradition, we believe it’s not enough to live in our community. We have a responsibility to help transform it for the good of others.

INsTITUTE FOR AUTIsM REsEARCH Children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder have an opportunity to participate in leading-edge treatment and research programs at the Institute for Autism Research (IAR) at Canisius. The institute’s summerMAX program was one of the first comprehensive treatment programs proven effective for children with high-functioning autism. The success of summerMAX is now the foundation for the IAR’s latest research, which tests the effectiveness of its treatment program in school settings, a largely overlooked area of research. To date, more than 250 children in the Buffalo area have benefited from IAR services. The Institute for Autism Research remains competitive with national research institutions for grant funding. In 2013, the IAR received a $3.4 million research grant from the U.S. department of Education Institute of Education Sciences – the largest research grant ever awarded to Canisius College.

Kaji Sunwar’s dreams became a reality when he opened Sagarmatha Groceries on Buffalo’s West Side. A Bhutanese immigrant, Sunwar received assistance from Canisius Enactus students who designed the store’s business plan. Opened in 2012, Sagarmatha Groceries fills an important need for Buffalo’s nearly 2,000 Bhutanese refugees, who are unable to find their traditional foods in area grocery stores. A student club, Enactus harnesses entrepreneurial opportunities to develop innovative projects that lead to sustainable change. Examples of this include programs whereby Canisius students teach Bhutanese refugee women to earn a living by sewing while caring for their children at home, and the Youth Entrepreneurship Showcase, which teaches future entrepreneurs basic business skills.

Rich with intellectual capital, the Canisius community leverages its resources to provide solutions to Buffalo’s challenges.
