Teaching adolescents takes experience, understanding of pedagogy, and knowledge of the subject you’ll be teaching. Earning your initial certification in adolescence education will prepare you for this complex task. Our program includes more than 100 hours of field experience – from observation to assisting classroom teachers to student teaching. It allows you to specialize in a subject of your choice, combining educational theories with content area expertise. You’ll graduate with a strong foundation of knowledge, equipped with the tools to pass that knowledge along to the next generation.

Teaching children requires knowledge of many different subjects, classroom management skills, and a keen understanding of how children learn. Our initial certification program in childhood education combines academic study with classroom teaching experience to help you launch your teaching career with confidence. You’ll get more than 100 hours of field experience in classrooms – observing, learning, and student teaching. In addition to educational theory courses and practical experience, you’ll also develop your educational philosophy. At Canisius, we’ll prepare you to become a leader in education and make a difference in the lives of children.

Earning your initial certification in physical education will prepare you for a career as a physical education teacher. Our program leads to initial certification in New York – one of the most rigorous state certifications in the nation. Our clinically-rich program will give you real experience teaching every aspect of PE – from team sports to healthy living. You’ll study theory and put it into practice. You’ll research, analyze, test, and synthesize. Our program will prepare you for the real work of teaching physical education – and by the time you have your own classroom, you’ll already be an experienced, certified professional.

stUDY PHYsICAL EDUCAtION FROM ANY LOCATION. MS in Physical Education, Professional Certification Online – 30 credit hours

If you want to help students get moving, choose our online master’s program in physical education. It focuses on K–12 physical education and leads to professional certification for those already initially certified in teaching PE. We designed the program to meet the needs of working professionals – so it can be completed entirely online. You’ll get the flexibility of online study, but the experienced, qualified professors of a prestigious brick-and-mortar college. You’ll learn theory. You’ll research. You’ll take courses in adapted PE, coaching, sport psychology, and health education. Our graduates embark on careers as PE teachers, coaches, exercise and fitness professionals, and conditioning coordinators. It’s just the education you need to hone your physical educational skills.

tEACH EVERY stUDENt AS AN INDIVIDUAL. MS in Differentiated Instruction On campus – 30 credit hours

No two students enter a classroom with identical abilities, experiences, and needs. Learning styles, language proficiencies, background knowledge, readiness to learn and many other factors vary from student to student. Differentiated instruction is an instructional theory that will allow you as a teacher to plan and deliver instruction taking all of this into account. Earning a master’s degree from Canisius in differentiated instruction will prepare you to meet every learner’s needs. Our program pairs academic research with practical experience. You’ll design and run a camp called Canisius for Kids. It’s just one of the many ways we help you put your learning into action – so you graduate experienced in the art of teaching.

LEARN tO tEACH TO EVERY NEED. MS in Special Education On campus – 30 to 54 credit hours

Our master’s program in special education will help you understand the unique needs of students with disabilities. You’ll learn theory and gain a strong foundation of knowledge in educational approaches and learning needs. You’ll also research and practice. You’ll study etiology, psychological and social factors, and techniques for effective teaching. By graduation, your understanding will match your passion for teaching, and with a practicum already on your résumé, you’ll be ready to meet the educational needs of every unique student you teach.

COMMUNICAtE WItH EVERY STUDENT. MS in Deaf Education On campus – 58 credit hours

Our masters program in deaf education partners with St. Mary’s School for the Deaf to give you field experience starting in your first semester. Here, you’ll join a tight-knit cohort with just eight graduate students. You’ll learn and work in our dedicated suite at St. Mary’s School, which includes classrooms, a graduate student lounge, and faculty offices. The program is intensive. It combines educational practice with a strong theoretical framework, wrapped in a comprehensive program philosophy. So by graduation, you’ll be ready to teach deaf children – from pre-nursery age through high school – in residential schools or day schools or resource rooms, and help them better navigate the world.

Our graduate program in educational technologies and emerging media is flexible yet rigorous, to keep you at the forefront of an emerging field. You can choose from four program tracks to receive either a master’s degree or an advanced certificate, and any one will fully prepare you for a career in educational technology. It will help you integrate many types of media into your classroom – from video to iPods to cameras to internet resources to whatever technological tool emerges next.

LEARN HERE, TEACH ANYWHERE. MS in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL), Online – 30 credit hours

Our master’s program in TESOL will give you the qualifications and practical skills to teach English in any setting – from an inner city public school to teaching English in Korea. You’ll learn to teach students who speak many different languages, and you don’t need to be bilingual to enroll. We’ll give you the certification and experience to begin teaching right away. And since TESOL is a growing field, job opportunities are expanding, especially in urban areas. So with this certification, your degree will be portable to wherever many different languages are spoken.

Advanced Certification in TESOL Online – 18 credit hours

Our advanced certification in TESOL equips master’s holding classroom teachers to teach English to speakers of other languages. Our program meets New York certification requirements for grades K–12. You’ll study cultural issues, theory, and linguistics. You’ll participate in research and field work. So you’ll complete the program not only certified, but genuinely prepared.

In the Buffalo area alone, there are 3,862 English language learners. Having this in-demand skill set can help you attain quality positions in a competitive job market.

Bilingual Education Extension Online – 15 credit hours

Our bilingual education extension is designed to help teachers meet New York requirements in bilingual education. Teachers who already hold initial certification, a master’s degree, and foreign language proficiency can complete the program entirely online. Our flexible program allows you to start in fall, spring, or summer, and will prepare you for the satisfying work of helping students learn to speak, write, and understand the English language.

AN EDUCAtION tHAt WILL TEACH YOU TO LEAD. PROgRAM OVERVIEW Our educational leadership programs are all part of a single master’s program. The program has three sequential segments, customized to meet different student needs. So you complete one program, two, or earn the entire master’s degree.

School Building Leader Program On campus or online – 26 credit hours

Our school building leader program prepares certified teachers to become administrative school leaders. We prepare experienced teachers to become Pre K–12 headmasters, principals, assistant principals, and school directors. You’ll learn to build a curriculum, to supervise, mentor, and peer-coach. This demanding yet rewarding career takes rigorous preparation, and we give you the academic background and experience necessary to conquer the task head-on.

School District Leader Program On campus or online – requires completion of School Building Leader Program + 6 additional credit hours

Completing our school district leader program will qualify you to become a leader on a district level. After completing our school building leader program, it takes just two additional courses to complete this program. You’ll learn supervision skills needed for effective administration and develop an understanding of business administration within the educational system. After completing the program, you’ll be ready to make a lasting difference in the broader educational system.


MS in Educational Leadership On campus or online – requires completion of School District Leader Program + 9 additional credit hours

Once you’ve completed our school district leader program, earning a master’s degree in educational leadership requires only three additional courses. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills to effectively create, implement, and evaluate a curriculum. You’ll prepare to face the ever increasing demand to make appropriate legal educational decisions. You’ll study current issues in educational leadership, and you’ll graduate prepared to be an agent for change in the educational system.

MS in Counseling – Community Mental Health Counseling On campus – 60 credit hours

Our master’s program in community mental health counseling will help you change lives. You might work in the field of mental health, helping individuals with recognized mental struggles. You might study substance abuse counseling and support people working hard to get and stay sober. Or you might choose rehabilitation counseling and help those with disabilities or developmental concerns. Whichever aspect of counseling you choose, our program will give you a solid foundation of knowledge and field experience. You’ll learn to practice counseling skills and study every aspect of counseling – from cultural dynamics to chemical dependency to social behavior.

LOVE COLLEgE? MAKE IT YOUR CAREER. MS in College Student Personnel Administration, On campus – 36 credit hours

Earning a master’s degree in college student personnel administration will prepare you for work in many aspects of higher education. Our program combines rigorous coursework with experiential learning – through two internships and opportunities for graduate assistantships. Plus, you’ll learn on a college campus, which is like studying investment strategies on Wall Street. With a strong combination of theory, research, and experience, you’ll graduate prepared to pursue any aspect of collegiate administration – from residence life to career counseling to student services to multicultural affairs.

Program Highlights • Start in the fall. • Participate in two internships at Canisius, or other universities, nationally or internationally • Obtain an assistantship and earn financial assistance toward your tuition. • Attend two national conferences alongside your professors.
