A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Canisius College has been making an impact in the Western New York community for nearly 150 years. Woven into the fabric of the region, Canisius exemplifies our Catholic, Jesuit values in the excellent education we provide to students and in the service and contributions we offer to the community where we live and work. As one of the largest independent colleges in the area, Canisius plays a significant role in the economic progress of Western New York. Our faculty members share their expertise with area businesses and service organizations. Our outstanding graduates contribute to the region’s intellectual capital as innovators in their fields. They inspire their communities and lead by example. The campus community, as a whole, illustrates its commitment to the city of Buffalo and all of Western New York through a number of partnerships, outreach and service initiatives. I am proud of the tangible difference Canisius makes in our community and pleased to share our current accomplishments through this Impact Report .

HAMLIN PARK INITIATIVE

EMPLOYER ASSISTED HOUSING (EAH)

Developed by Canisius President John J. Hurley, the Hamlin Park Initiative is a housing program designed to refurbish and return collegeowned homes in the Hamlin Park neighborhood to owner-occupiers.

The Employer Assisted Housing program, established in 2002, was the first of its kind in Western New York to provide forgivable loans to employees who purchase homes in the areas surrounding the college.

INSTITUTE FOR AUTISM RESEARCH (IAR) Established in 2009, the IAR has developed several new and successful treatment programs that have garnered the attention of the clinical and research communities.

CENTER FOR URBAN EDUCATION Canisius partnered with the National Urban Alliance for Effective Education in 2017 to form the Center for Urban Education which enhances the quality of teaching and learning in urban schools across Western New York.

TEACHER RESIDENCY PROGRAM A leader in urban education, Canisius has established the Western New York Teacher Residency Program. The program includes a year-long teaching residency, and graduates make a three-year commitment to teach in an urban school in the Buffalo Niagara region.

TEACH FOR AMERICA (TFA) TFA chose Canisius as its exclusive Buffalo partner to recruit, educate and support corps members to become highly-qualified teachers. Corps members teach full-time in low-income communities while completing required coursework.

CANISIUS AMBASSADORS FOR CONSERVATION (CAC) CAC students are trained through intensive field studies and then share their research and knowledge with the local community as public educators at zoological institutions and local schools, and by producing pro-conservation videos.

Students teach entrepreneurial skills to Buffalo’s migrant and inner-city populations with a goal of financial independence.

St. Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Society of Jesus, dedicated the Jesuits in service to the cities and the people who live there. In keeping with this Jesuit tradition, we believe it’s not enough to live in our community. We have a responsibility to help transform it for the good of others.

C ULT U RAL I M PACT Canisius invites the community to campus throughout the year to enjoy educational, enriching and entertaining programming. ArtsCanisius fills the calendar with concerts, exhibits and other arts events. The celebrated Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra (BPO) performs on campus every year. Informative and engaging lectures are presented by guest speakers on a variety of topics under the auspices of the college’s many lecture series.
