Life-changing Events
It is in conjunction with nearly one hundred and fifty associates that Cankarjev dom’s new season is being devised. Naturally, in close and creative collaboration with numerous individuals and organisations from all over the world. The scope and complexity of events staged by a cultural and congress centre the size of Cankarjev dom, still one of the most prominent venues of its kind in Europe, often make our work fairly difficult. Notwithstanding, even when encountering the gravest of difficulties we are greatly encouraged by the thought of almost half a million annual visitors for whom our centre has become a place of shared experience. It is immensely reassuring and inspiring to know that we are hosting cultural, congress and social events that have been changing countless lives for decades.
existential issues. Doubtlessly, the events staged at Cankarjev dom raise new questions about these issues or, alternatively, propose innovative solutions.
Cankarjev dom is a place of dialogue. Dialogue with art, and with science. It is a place for social dialogue established at various meetings that create opportunities to communicate our ideas to complete strangers and initiate personal contact because we exchange our views about
Join us in our desire to make the new season a shared experience. A life-enriching experience.
Apart from the forthcoming season’s fascinating variety of events, I would like to draw attention to CD’s spring tribute to William Shakespeare. The bard’s plays provide for a matrix within which we ponder on our quotidian existence, and his dramatic characters (Romeo, Hamlet, Lady Macbeth, etc.) represent present-day cultural types. It is even today that we tend to term dramatic or tragic events as dramas of Shakespearean proportions. Opening in April, the exhibition dedicated to Nikola Tesla, which commemorates the 160th anniversary of the birth of this ingenious inventor, shall begin our exploration of interrelations among art, science and technology in the coming autumn.

French director and actor Bartabas is pioneer of original forms of expression and an active campaigner for animal rights and environmental preservation. In 1984 he established the Zingaro Equestrian Theatre (named after his first horse), and subsequently also the Equestrian Academy based in the stables of the Palace of Versailles in the outskirts of Paris. Bartabas’ art is an ode to the Horse, an animal he worships as a magnificent creature and a being of nature. Known as Opéra Equestre, his shows Chimère, Eclipse, Triptyk, Longta, Calacas, etc, have toured some of the most prominent world theatres EUR 16, 19, 22, 26, 14* Main sponsor:

Blending various genres, Bartabas regularly devises also more intimist pieces, which he both writes and performs in cooperation with other artists. Bartabas’ latest show, Golgota, was created in partnership with one of the most talented contemporary flamenco stars, Andrés Marín. The creators drew inspiration from Spanish baroque painting and the music by Tomás Luis de Victoria, a Spanish Renaissance composer, whose mystical, liturgical motets are to be performed live during the show. The Ljubljana audiences have already had the pleasure of enjoying the pianism of Grigory Sokolov, whose musical genius has earned him a legendary status. He is considered by many today to be the world's greatest living pianist and a worthy heir to piano masters such as Gilels, Sofronitsky and Lipatti. Ever since his first major piano recital in Leningrad at the age of 12, playing pieces as challenging as those by Bach and Shostakovich, Sokolov has amazed everyone again and again. In the 40 years since the 16-year-old Grigory Sokolov was awarded
first prize at the International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition in Moscow in 1966, the world has been blessed with what a critic recently called “a kind of pianism, musicianship and artistry one thought had vanished forever. Owing to the limited travelling allowed under the Soviet regime Sokolov's international career began to flourish only towards the end of the 1980s. Sokolov, whose dedication is unwavering and stance uncompromising, has recently significantly reduced the number of his concerto performances, preferring to give recitals. Concert sponsored by:

As Vienna’s cultural ambassador and premier concert orchestra, the Wiener Symphoniker handles the lion’s share of symphonic activity that makes up the musical life of its city. A promoter of humanitarian values, the orchestra that boasts as many as 128 musicians is one of Europe’s most prestigious ensembles. Richard Strauss, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Herbert von Karajan, Wolfgang Sawallisch, and Hans Swarowsky are among the many prominent conductors who have shaped the sound and interpretive style of this tradition-rich institution. The orchestra’s current principal conductor is Philippe Jordan. The orchestra, which has also been in residence at the Bregenzer Festspiele, is precisely the right vehicle
for the great Romantic works that constitute its core repertoire. Charles Dutoit is principal conductor and Artistic Director of London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and a sought-after guest of the world’s most prominent ensembles. He has appeared in Ljubljana on a number of occasions, among others with the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and the French National Orchestra. A conductor particularly noted for his interpretations of French and Russian 20th-century music, Dutoit has received numerous prizes and distinctions including the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed by the International Classical Music Awards in April 2014. Containing traits of virtually every great hero of classical and romantic literature yet being entirely original and individualistic, Peer Gynt holds a special place among dramatic characters. Deriving inspiration from the Norwegian treasury of folk tales, the story is actually a disclosed projection of Henrik Ibsen’s most intimate existential dilemmas. Peer initially shows himself as a poet who can transfix us with the power of verbal expression and imagination, and grows to become a callous social climber and profiteer, inhabiting with the same determination the roles of lover or

murderer, truth-seeker or a man possessed. Edward Clug outlined his choreographic vision of this Nordic character as contemporary narrative ballet incorporating elements of objective surrealism, absurd rationality and humorous self-irony – the dominant psychological traits of Peer Gynt, re-imagined as a state – or moment – of dance. The musical score includes the original incidental and theatre music written for the 1876 premiere of Ibsen’s play by Edvard Grieg, who is widely considered to be one of the leading Romantic composers.

The CNPOC (The China National Peking Opera Company) was established in 1955 on the initiative of Mei Lanfang, the celebrated actor whose life served as the main inspiration for the Farewell My Concubine movie. CNPOC regularly tours all over the globe, performing at all major theatre venues, from the Kennedy Center in Washington to Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris. The company preserves the heritage of the celebrated traditional Chinese theatre known as Peking opera (Chinese: Jīng jù), dating from the 13th century. There are no connections between Peking and European opera. Although the actors are accompanied by an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, there’s no conductor. The players are equally adept in the sophisticated acting technique as well as acrobatic skills and martial arts. The story’s protagonist, Sun Wukong or Monkey King, is one of the most enduring Chinese literary characters. A sly and dexterous ape, Sun Wukong has supernatural powers, can perform magic and is a skilled fighter. The classical staging of The Monkey King with as many as fifty performers is a true visual treat, featuring lavish costumes and elaborate make-up; before the show each actor puts on his own make-up, a ritual that takes him approximately two hours. The western audiences can look forward to a journey into Far East as well as an unparalleled beginning of the New Year, the year of the monkey according to Chinese lunar calendar. The dramatic character of Guiseppe Verdi’s Otello, tinged with nuances of gothic style, the story of Macbeth and his power-thirsty wife in the heart of Africa as a struggle for dominion over diamond mines, Hamlet as Aki Kaurismaki’s black comedy, Hamlet as the ongoing challenge confronted by Slovenian actors, the timeless Ophelia as seen through the lens of contemporary Slovenian photographers, Shakesonnets as a musical experience for young audiences… The new year will begin with a tribute to playwright and poet whose mastermind has marked the world to the extent that the dramatis personae from his majestic dramas
appear even to inhabit contemporaneity. Indeed, four hundred years after Shakespeare’s death it seems that, inherently, human nature has not changed at all: political intrigues, riots and wars, thirst for power and manipulation, ruthless power struggles, confused sons and daughters, forbidden and doomed love between the descendants of families engaged in long-standing feuds, between hostile clans, nations, religions or races. Life as a cruel yet nevertheless magical, invariably unique game of destinies and interests replete with passion. Shakespeare forever.

Soloists, choir and orchestra of the Slovenian National Theatre SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana..................................................................................................... Directed by: Manfred Schweigkofler; Music Director: Jaroslav Kyzlink; Set design: Walter Schütze; Costume design: Mateja Benedetti; Light design: Andrej Hajdinjak; Choreography: Lukas Zuschlag; Co-production: SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, Cankarjev dom Otello is Verdi’s penultimate masterpiece, a work of great maturity whose operatic nature dramatically blends with the story’s narrative arc. It is precisely with this opera that the composer exercised his genius in dramatising the musical movement and thus closely approaching the principles of a total work of art. Shakespeare’s play provides a gratifying basis for the tragic and dramatic story about the sincere yet fragile love between a heroic Moorish captain and the beautiful daughter of a Venetian senator, a love thwarted by driving ambition, resentment and conniving jealousy. The director Manfred Schweigkofler has already staged the resoundingly

successful The Rhine Nixies at Cankarjev dom. Walter Schütze’s set design follows the director’s aim to establish an abstract historical context. In adopting a certain gothic style, the problems of concrete historical and iconographic frameworks have been sidestepped. This enables an establishment of imaginary historical dimension and, alongside a visuality leaning towards a harder kind of aesthetics, generation of dramatic force. Costume designer Mateja Benedetti has asserted herself internationally by working with various German and Italian opera houses, and Music Director Jaroslav Kyzlink is the Principal Conductor of the Ljubljana Opera House. A world-renowned South African director, Brett Bailey’s shows have been presented across most of the continents. “Our African Rimbaud”, as the director has been termed by one of the critics, has been transplanting old European stories onto African soil. After seeing the shows such as Medea, Orpheus or Macbeth the spectators might wonder whether it isn’t the other way around, and the stories are actually intrinsically African. In this radical take on Verdi’s Macbeth, Shakespeare’s story of a power-thirsty nobleman and his even more ambitious wife is set on the shores of the Great Lakes in Central
Africa, in the midst of wars for the control over diamond mines. Bailey imagined Verdi’s opera about witches, tyranny and the thirst for power “as a colonial cathedral – lost in the forests or grasslands of Central Africa; a memento of a prior era, now crumbling, shot full of bullet holes, sprayed with graffiti, collapsing under the weight of vines”, and has inhabited it with excellent South African vocalists who are also brilliant performers, thus creating a bloody musical drama that, alas, resonates across the present-day Africa all too authentically. The enigmatic drama by the French author of Romanian descend hovers somewhere in-between surrealism, magic realism and the absurd and has been a perfect vehicle for Robert Wilson’s imagination and creative drive. In company with a 30-member ensemble from the National Theatre Marin Sorescu Craiova Wilson has created a theatrical madness, in which imagination runs wild, pushing the limits of logic and classical perception of the world. People are slowly turning into rhinoceroses, reality gives way to irreality, and the theatre magic dispels all bleak visions of the world and affords views further beyond,
across other dimensions. What Ionesco aimed to do with language, Wilson does with images, showing us a world beyond our wildest dreams. The corpulent bodies and expressive faces of brilliant Romanian actors draw on the rich tradition of European avant-garde theatre and silent movies extending from Gordon Craig and Max Reinhardt to Charlie Chaplin and Cabaret Voltaire. Commemorating the twentieth anniversary of Eugene Ionesco’s death, Rhinoceros is a lesson in history of the twentieth-century avant-garde theatre and a proof that great directors are like fine wine. They get better with age. Show sponsored by:

Nikola Tesla – A Man of the Future Within the scope of the Art Science Technology Series
“If you want to find the secrets of the universe, think in terms of energy, frequency and vibrations.” Nikola Tesla
An ingenious scientist, engineer, inventor and discoverer of natural principles and laws, Nikola Tesla (1856, Smiljan – 1943, New York) received European education and spent most of his life in the USA, where he realised his numerous patents – altogether he registered around 300 patents in the field of electrical and mechanical engineering. The significance of some of his innovations lies in their global character and universal application. In 1900 he wrote and published Problem of Increasing Human Energy, a study in which he exposed some of the issues that humankind will face in the near future, and suggested specific solutions.
The Nikola Tesla exhibition, held within the scope of the Art Science Technology series, will not only deal with life and work of this great man but also with the history of some important scientific and technological ideas, with problems of creativity and innovation and especially with interrelations among technology, culture and education in our modern civilisation. The exhibition will consist of several thematic units shown in combination with the following exhibits: multimedia information boards, models of inventions, working, interactive, 3D-digital models, etc.
The project is being developed in cooperation with the Nikola Tesla Museum in Belgrade. Concept by: Branimir Jovanović, Museum Director and author of Tesla's World of Miracles ( source: The Nikola Tesla Museum, Belgrade)

Alonzo King LINES Ballet
Concerto for Two Violins, Men's Quintet, Writing Ground Choreographed by: Alonzo King Music: Johann S. Bach, Edgar Meyer, traditional music LINES Ballet is a celebrated contemporary ballet company based in San Francisco that has been guided by the singular artistic vision of Alonzo King. Collaborating with noted composers, innovative musicians, and visual artists from around the world, Alonzo King creates works that draw on a diverse set of deeply rooted cultural traditions, imbuing classical ballet with new expressive potential. When in 2010 LINES Ballet first appeared in Ljubljana we had the opportunity to experience the ballet dancers’ exceptionally supple moves expressing vulnerability and tenderness alongside the release and rapture of a liberated body. The company is returning with a ballet triptych. The first piece in the repertoire, Concerto for Two Violins is choreographed to Bach’s Concerto in D Minor, replete with King’s signature sensuality. The short Men's Quintet draws from the outstanding quality of male dancers, the men’s inner geometry and passionate devotion. Writing Ground forms the triptych’s central part. An emotionally searing and lyrical work, set to a collection of sacred early music from the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, and Tibetan Buddhist traditions, Writing Ground challenges Alonzo King to explore new physical territory using dance as a mediator of compassion among languages and religions. Nuptial Melodrama in the Neapolitan Style Directed by: Katja Pegan; Performed by: Saša Pavček, Bine Matoh, Ivo Barišič, Teja Glažar et al.; Co-production: Koper Theatre, Slovenian National Theatre SNG Nova Gorica Saved from a Neapolitan brothel by the wealthy Domenico Soriano twenty-five years ago, Filumena Marturano has been taken seriously ill. Throughout all this time Filumena has been harbouring the hope of becoming Domenico’s wife. To bring her some comfort and relief in her final hours Soriano marries her on her deathbed – when all of a sudden Filumena miraculously regains health. LD
A story about marriage and love that seems comical turns out to be a complex and critical work that both problematises the position and perception of women in Catholic and patriarchal Italy and addresses the misery and tragic condition of marginalised people; de Fillipo invariably takes the side of people like Filumena who have suffered the most.

A central line will be drawn in the middle of the hall, extending between its two entrances. Along the whole length of the hall – like the continuous, solid white line between traffic lanes. An endless walk will be performed precisely and exclusively on this line. The line aims at being a living, perpetual
calmingly sublime flatness of the empty space and can at the same time represent precisely this ‘line, limit or contact’ ‘between science and art’, which we persistently seek for in contemporary discourse on art, science and life in general. The Secrets of Duša Počkaj
Europe (photo Peter Uhan)
50
Named after the legendary principal actress of the Slovenian National Theatre Drama Ljubljana, the ethereal muse of Slovenian director Boštjan Hladnik who starred in his films Dancing in the Rain and Killing Me Softly, the Duša Počkaj Hall is the smallest theatre auditorium of Cankarjev dom. Just as Duša Počkaj convincingly portrayed countless heroines, playing hundreds of dramatic or cinematic characters, the eponymous Hall is a mysterious space that hosts numerous Slovenian theatre or dance artists. That is why one can never know with certainty what awaits behind its door. Namely, the Hall is a platform for articulation of myriad artistic visions that reflect the current sensitivities and views on art, mankind and society.
It is for several decades that Cankarjev dom has been ardently promoting the so-called independent creativity, artists and companies in search of new artistic expressions in theatre and dance; our cultural centre offers a haven to artists whose idiosyncrasies tend to prevent them from finding artistic residence in repertory theatres. The Duša Počkaj Hall that is available for long creative processes has witnessed the emergence of a number of iconic shows, including Frogs by playwright Gregor Strniša and director Damir Zlatar Frey, Brigades of Beauty by director Vlado G. Repnik, Schneewittchen by playwright Robert Walser and staged by Ivica Buljan, as well as a multitude of other artistic experiences.
In the 2014/15 season Duša Počkaj Hall hosted Europe, a show written by Ivana Sajko and directed by Primož Ekart, which received the Marul Award for Artistic Achievements at the 25th Festival of Croatian
Drama ‘Days of Marko Marulić’. It has also entered the competitive selection of the 50th Borštnik Theatre Festival. Photograph of a scene from the show.

The film series features an appealing blend of traditional and alternative cinematic approaches. While for the past two years the viewers have been astounded by modern takes on classical plays set in urban environments (e.g. Romeo + Juliet by Baz Luhrmann and Hamlet by Michael Almereyda), one has to acknowledge the overwhelming visual and dramatic impression of classical approaches (e.g. Othello by Orson Welles and Henry V by Kenneth Branagh). Equally compelling are

the films that render a classical text in a form that is ‘incompatible’ in terms of genre (Hamlet by Aki Kaurismaki as a black comedy, Romeo and Juliet as Latin musical in West Side Stor y), while the procedures whereby the directors address a particular Shakespearean motif or minor character to construct an original cinematic narration are indisputably challenging (e.g. Chimes at Midnight by Orson Welles and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead by Tom Stoppard)...............................................

"In the news, human rights and touching real-life stories more often than not turn into statistical data or get to be reported in short, cruel sentences. Stinging fragments of information that tend to be eclipsed by the next news item. Reports from human rights organisations, including those published by Amnesty International, do not top the reading lists – and fail to receive due public attention. That is why I am overjoyed every time I hear someone say that he/she has seen a film about this issue and that the matter should be addressed urgently. Human rights documentary films are far more effective in publicly revealing people’s stories and related social issues; invariably also evoking understanding and compassion, followed by the desire to take action. That is why since 2008, the year when our jury started to present best human rights award at the Documentary Film Festival, I see this collaboration as a joint venture in an endeavour for a better future."

Tomaž Lavrič
18 November 2015 – 14 January 2016
The Magical Language of Comics
Cartoon artist, caricaturist and illustrator Tomaž Lavrič boasts a fascinating career and rich bibliography. While some years ago the Museum of Modern Art featured an extensive retrospective of Lavrič’s gigantic cartoon oeuvre, Cankarjev dom is organising a different, research study of his creativity in collaboration with art historian Jure Mikuž. Highly proficient in all elements of comics, Lavrič’s visuality can switch between narrativeness and realism, or alternate between constructivist abstractness and tender lyricism. The cartoonist draws from various
GC
elements of visual culture, ranging from cinema and painting to drawing and video, fusing them idiosyncratically in a language t hat’s very much his own. The exhibition will thus highlight those series that establish the particularities of this idiom. It is only the greatest masters of comics, among whom Lavrič indisputably ranks, who are capable of predicting a viewer’s ability of associations between successive scenes and their interpretative editing caesurae, of creating the requisite tension with artistic elements and verbal twists. This suspense can be generated only by the perfect mutual dependency and synergy between image and text: the visual and verbal dimensions are able to most efficiently communicate the idea they both strive towards only in two-way interaction.

The Zagreb School
Born in 1955 in Zagreb. Belonging to a generation of established Croatian fine artists, Vrkljan has been on the faculty of the Academy of Fine Art Zagreb since 1987, currently as associate professor. Since 2014, he has been regular member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts. Recipient of all major Croatian awards, the artist represented Croatia at the 1999 Venice Art Biennial, has held numerous solo exhibitions and has participated in various group shows in Croatia and abroad.
The current exhibition features 15 largescale paintings, composed for the Ljubljana showcase over the past two years. His painting is a sombre one, predominantly dark and ponderous with strong pictorial accents. Namely, in his late period the artist is returning to themes he was exploring in his student days, yet applying them to his current motifs with a present-day sensitivity, knowledge and artistry, in a time that’s illdisposed towards painting.

The Red Poppy Fields exhibition focuses on WWI, one of the most dramatic events in contemporary European history. ................ The group exhibition reflects on the reasons and consequences of war and its far-reaching social implications. Centred primarily on the media of photography and video, the curators and artists articulate different views about this turbulent time, and draw parallels between the past and present. Even though the project links partners (curators) from Hungary, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia, i.e. the countries that experienced war when under the AustroHungarian Empire, the artists are examining the said phenomena from a wider European perspective..................................
Comprising artistic visions of professional documentary or stock photographers as well as fine-art photographers addressing the theme of historical memory, be it personal or collective, the exhibition forms part of a broader project that tours across Central European cities (Ljubljana, Vienna, Bratislava, Budapest, Slupsk). Partly cofinanced by the International Visegrad Fund, the project has been devised in collaboration with reputed regional institutions (SEDF Bratislava, House of Photography & Association of Hungarian Photographers Budapest, Baltic Gallery of Contemporary Art and Photon Ljubljana & Vienna.)

William Shakespeare: Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. Directed by: Osip Šest; National Theatre Ljubljana, premiere on 26 January 1922. The photograph shows Zvonimir Rogoz in the role of Hamlet. (Source: Slovenian Theatre Institute)
It is for more than four centuries that William Shakespeare’s Hamlet has been inspiring theatre artists, poets, thinkers and ‘common’ people – and has entered the consciousness of the people who have never read the play or seen its staging. In Hamlet, each period in human history finds new challenges and undertones. The exhibition will attempt to at least partially resolve the
question about Hamlet’s timeless appeal, why it holds an enduring fascination on its readers or spectators, and at the same time by presenting an historical overview of Hamlet in Slovenia explore its power of attraction throughout time as well as the textual aspects that were relevant in different periods.

Thread, gap, lace, the symbol of time and transience. The relationship between repletion and depletion, a sublime bond that links or tears asunder. A singularity that grows into multiplicity with steadfast insistence. A line that is the drawing of time, a shape of finality, the link to yesterday and a fine line leading into tomorrow. A memory of autonomous past, a diagram of the network of future that links, through the holes of existence, the DNA of time and that of humans. Janin Maj Dark Light
Branko Čeak Domen Pal Jože Maček Ljubljana – A Different Perspective
Branko Čeak
Intensively involved in photography – amateur and professional – since young age, Janin Maj’s series of nudes was taken between 2010–15. The Dark Light show delves into the intricacies of bringing order into the chaos of colours, creating a balance between structure and texture and visualising the play of light and shades. Apart from the explicit yet subdued eroticism, the visual and aesthetic dimensions of his nudes are especially appealing. It is the photos whose content is not readily apparent that are especially compelling.
"And while one begins drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes the brainstorming session yields a plan: let’s direct all our lights into the spaces of our city that are invisible to the eyes of the broader public, purposefully overlooked or seen from certain viewpoints. However, there are alternative, as yet unseen and surprising perspectives. We have lights galore and the urban spaces are incalculable."

Igor Škafar Photo Album
A major landmark in Jerko’s career was photographs of hats by Alja Košak, which the Ljubljana-based milliner designed for Jovanka Broz and the Queen of England. Since then, he has specialised mainly in fashion and commercial photography. He discovered the feminine, physical as well as inner beauty of numerous girls, thus contributing to their breakthrough as catwalk models as well as the establishment of the Slovenian fashion scene. The exquisite photographs evoke the golden era of Slovenia’s fashion and entertainment circles.
Igor Škafar, who has recently asserted himself with the visually and thematically invigorating Mladina magazine’s Ulica column, last year participated in an exhibition by the Mladina magazine photographers, entitled Multitaskers. The current one-man exhibition is aimed at joining the artist’s two pursuits of the past decade. Škafar is recording a 13-track album in his studio. While each of the compositions will be supported by a staged photograph based on its title, sound players will be arranged around each of the compositions associated with an exhibited photo.

Segulin is an artist noted for selecting her photographic motifs with heightened sensitivity, an art she thoroughly masters in both the black-and-white and colour techniques. With a pure, minimalistic approach, Segulin’s photography is composed with a view to establishing inner peace as an antidote to our stressful, chaotic lives. She aims at highlighting the stillness that is more than simply silence, it is the sound of silence, the sweetest music that we hear and feel in this endless universe that looms infinitely over us. Although these timeless images could have been captured anywhere, they are defined by precisely determined place or landscape. Accompanying text by: Andrej Medved

Jakša’s photography emerges from the magical realm between sharp and indistinct outlines, the blear and the blur, unusual views and perspectives, ‘photogenic and non-photogenic subjects’, from black-andwhite and monochromatic techniques to colour pictures. In the kaleidoscope of stage lighting, this colour palette – spotlighting the musicians and their surroundings – acquires expressly artistic dimensions, entirely independent aspects that reveal themselves beyond the representation of concrete portrayees. The produced ‘snapshots’ give the impression of being artistic allusions of a musical atmosphere permeated with sounds and resonances, of multilayered ‘scores’.

Culture for New Generations
Amazement and mischief, playfulness and vibrancy, dexterity and creativity, contemplation and imagination, curiosity and interest, laughter and tears – the CD programme for children and young people evokes all of these emotions and sensations. This year’s cultural education programme is just as daring as ever, embracing all generations of our young audiences. We have devoted close attention to accessibility of our programme, since one of the primary aims of cultural education is social inclusiveness, reduced vulnerability of disadvantaged groups and, consequently, equal opportunities for all. No matter how hackneyed this may sound – it’s important that the siren gets sounded! In the forthcoming season, we will take advantage of our being a cultural centre – each audience member attending one of our programmes within the scope of his school’s cultural day will receive a complimentary ticket for the CD Gallery exhibition or an invitation to join a tour of CD’s backstage. We look forward to new performances: the
music performances Enci benci Katalenci and Chord after Chord, musical staging entitled Shakesonnets and children’s opera Brundibar. Of course, there will be reprises of all the past season’s finest productions – performances, concerts and workshops that inspired enthusiasm and appreciation in our young audiences. As executive producer of the Cultural Bazaar, Cankarjev dom enhances and expands the festival of Slovenian culture, while in company with the Puppet Theatre Ljubljana we have established the Golden Wand Festival, a cultural-education platform for performing arts, which will – alongside the Cultural Bazaar – raise the standards of quality art and facilitate a firm communication channel for exchange of information between education and culture. In the desire to enable expression to art and promote creativity, Cankarjev dom organises a traditional festival of secondary-student creativity, Trans-generations, and hosts outstanding secondary-school productions.

“As annual manifestation of educational, pedagogic and animation programmes of various cultural institutions Cultural Bazaar is an example of responsible public politics within the scope of culture and education, representing the successful Slovenian national platform linking these meaningful areas. In view of the Montenegrin context and taking into account the wider regional and European situation, the Festival addresses one of the key issues of contemporary cultural politics – i.e. participation in culture. The spotlight on the young people is the primary challenge of strengthening future projects; the future holds many new challenges, nevertheless, such approach raises new developmental possibilities that change the systems of culture REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA

Drawing attention to new approaches with quality presentation of artists and cultural producers, be it cultural heritage or most recent contemporary art practices, Cultural Bazaar also facilitates greater openness of cultural institutions. The artists and producers have ascertained that the artefact they possess or create can be more understandable and publicly accessible. Thereby, we touch upon all the relevant issues of contemporary society, a society that knows how important it is to develop cultural identity of a community, despite numerous negative influences of globalisation. This identity is aff irmed and expressed precisely and only through participation in cultural life, and more – through creating circumstances for new generations of artists who will foster a lifelong appreciation of culture.”

First Honey in the City By pollinating plants bees enable their fertilisation and survival. Plan ts and crops enable human survival. As an urban beekeeper Cankarjev dom is helping bees survive. It is not only that Cankarjev dom fosters culture and the arts as well as our shared human heritage with great sensitivity, but also shows deep concern for nature. In keeping with this philosophy, the first four beehives were installed on one of CD’s rooftop terraces in spring 2011. It is with great pride that Cankarjev dom can profess to be the pioneer of Slovenian urban beekeeping. The bees fly within a radius of three kilometres. Ljubljana’s urban environment with its flowering trees and gardens in the Tivoli Park, the Rožnik green and Castle hill provides profuse bee pasture. The honey delivery of our bee families – nine in 2015 – depends on weather conditions at the time when the plants are in full flower. The annual honey production ranges between 40 to 100 kilos. The honey produced by the bees of Cankarjev dom has been analysed as excellent honey by the Reference Laboratory Bremen and has earned a certificate of quality.
