FLEET AND CONTRACTS

DEAR READER

Christmas 2014 is upon us and you are now reading the 9th Edition of the Olympic Magazine. The magazine will provide an insight into what has happened within the Olympic Group throughout the year, and we hope you will enjoy it. Thanks to Cann AS for design and layout, and to May Britt Haukås, who has written the articles with Rune Grande, Martin Eysturdal and Monica Kolseth. For photos and stories sent to us from all the vessels, thank you all for the contribution. We welcome new stories and photos in the year to come! The editors hereby wish all readers a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

THON HOTEL FOSNAVÅG IT’S MORE THAN A HOTEL

October 13th Thon Hotel Fosnavåg was officially opened. The hotel has 115 rooms, and is located on the quayside in the center of Fosnavåg. Many of the rooms, and also the restaurant with seats for 220 persons, have a great view of the sea and the bird island Runde. The hotel has very good conference facilities. In connection to the hotel you will find Fosnavåg Concert Hall and Fosnavåg Cinema. Fosnavaag

is

connected to the hotel and is a 1000 m2 full scale ship simulator. All the simulators

can be used together to simulate advanced offshore operations. The courses at Fosnavaag Ocean Academy is coordinated by Ålesund University College. Crew from Olympic have already attended several courses at the academy, and there is plenty more to come in 2015. We will develop our own courses, conduct joint training and be able to simulate complex operations together with our customers. Olympic is one of the two largest investors in the academy and the hotel, and the biggest contributor to the concert hall. Now we have a unique venue for training, conferences and social events. We welcome you all to Fosnavåg!

Just wishing fishing could happen more often. ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY On the job, Grande is responsible of the day to day support of three subsea vessels. They are six, soon to be seven, with the title of “Vessel Manager” in the Office, plus the technical manager. The number of ships each is determined by the types. The job involves repairs, planning during dockings, budgeting, being in touch with classing agencies and governmental agencies, and more. Subsea vessels are the most advanced and demanding. In addition to the base crew of around 25 people, they often have up to 75 other representatives on board, specialists working with underwater remote operating vehicles (ROV) and other advanced specialist equipment for the operations under the waterline and at the bottom of the sea. -I have a very free role, for better or worse, Grande smiles. Here, as so often in life, being forgiven is easier than asking permission. Decisions have to be made fast and there’s no one looking over his shoulder, telling him what to do. The social aspect is the main goal of this activity during her periods off work, not the prospect of a huge income. -It’s fun, a great way to meet people and keep updated on the latest news, she laughs. WOMAN ON BOARD The question of how it is, being the sole or one of very few women on board, is familiar. She understands why people ask. She has also heard stories about young women having a hard time on board. -I have been very fortunate with my coworkers. They have taken care of me and taught me well, we are a stable and coherent bunch, she says. When looking back, she understands that she was a little more protected than the other apprentices, the boys got to try things a bit faster. But it doesn’t matter, she knows it’s all about caring for her, not an attempt to keep her back. She is fond of her colleagues and their workplace, they are good team. -Olympic Zeus was among the best and most advanced in the market when the vessel was delivered five years ago, she proudly says. The ship is an OCV, built for anchor handling, laying cables, under water operations and with a 250-ton offshore crane. The flexibility gives them a wide range of missions. She finds that both exciting and challenging. It’s not unthinkable that in a few years from now, she will be in command on board. She’s got plans, but there’s no hurry. FUTURE The house on the hilltop is watertight, before Christmas it will be fully finished outside. Inside she is planning to lay the floor and put on the wallpapers herself,

Crane work for Reliance Industries. During the last year, Olympic Canyon has been called to assist on two unfortunate incidents. The first was an Indian Navy Torpedo Recovery vessel that sunk and we were asked by the Indian navy to search for it with our ROV. The vessel was located sitting upright on the seabed. The total crew number was 28, and unfortunately 4 of those are still not found and are probably still trapped inside the vessel. The second one was a fishing boat that capsized with 7 crew members, near to our location. 5 persons were rescued and 2 were missing. We engaged in the search as on scene commander together with two other offshore vessels, but with a surface currant of 4 knots, we did not manage to find the missing fishermen. A few days later the Indian coastguard found the casualties and they were brought to the port of Kakinada to their families. It was also agreed onboard that the ship´s welfare would contribute to the families for their troubled condition.

A CHILD IS BORN IN BETHLEHEM

The never ending story, some say. That is correct. Same story every year. About Jesus, born in a stable in Bethlehem. Joseph and Mary, who traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem to enroll in the census. All guesthouses are fully booked. Mary is heavily pregnant and have to give birth among animals and put the baby in a manger. The shepherds who are terrified when an angel shows up for them. Fear not said the angel. A Savior is born. Jesus was born more than 2000 years ago, and still we celebrate his birthday, year after year after year. Also in 2014, we celebrate that Christ came to earth. On ships with Christians on board, the 24th of Desember (or 25th ) the celebration take place just as surely as the wind blows and the waves do not stop to turn in land. The bridge, mess-room and dayroom are nicely decorated

with

Christmas-decorations.

It is eaten traditional Christmas food. All dress up and gather for the Christmas meal that day. Perhaps reads the Captain the Christmas story, from the Bible (Luke 2.1-20). This is about our Christian heritage and tradition. It is important for all people to know their identity and preserve their traditions. Christmas can be the time when many should have been with their family somewhere else in the world. When you not can, the traditions can help to stave off slightly for homesickness. You know that you do the same things and eat the same food as your loved ones at home. You know where you belong. You know you soon will be on your way back home. Norwegian Church all over the world are a carrier of the Christian tradition and culture. We want to be present for those who need us both now at Christmas and throughout the year. We wish you all a blessed Christmas and thank you for many good conversations in the year that is soon to an end. Greetings from Ole Dagfinn, Morten and Jostein Offshore group Norway OLYMPIC CHRISTMAS MAGAZINE 2014
