Explore Havlandet Runde – Fosnavåg – Herøy
Where the land edge meets the open sea you will find Havlandet – a beautiful island community in the Herøy Municipality
Herøy When the ice retreated after the last great ice age, Havlandet’s outermost islets were the first to emerge. Some even say that the ice never settled here. People clung to the narrow strip between the ice and the sea, and when the ice melted, the fishing grounds remained close by, ensuring a good life for the locals. On the large coastal brim between the mountains and the shore, we find remnants of people who have lived here for thousands of years; bronze knives and stone axes, not to mention ships, burial mounds, and rock carvings.

We offer rafting, diving, fishing, and kayaking experiences at sea. Here, we have both rough pebble beaches and beaches with the finest, whitest sand. But could perhaps the temperature of the water in the Sunnmørsbadet indoor bathing complex tempt you more than the Atlantic Ocean? Do you long to cycle along roads that take you over both land and sea, across spectacular bridges between islands, along dizzying cliff edges teeming with birds or gentle coastal heaths? And when you are filled up on experiences, how about filling up on fish or seafood
delivered directly to restaurants by local fishermen? While Explore Havlandet’s brochure may give you a taste of Havlandet, visiting www. opplevhavlandet.no will show you a little more of everything we offer. Here, you will find ideas for tours and activities. We want you to see as much as possible when you are here to visit, but don’t forget to sit down in the heather, take in the view and enjoy life, as well.

FROM FOSNAVÅG TO ÅLESUND AND BACK TO FOSNAVÅG The trip goes from Fosnavåg to Ålesund, via Ulsteinvik and Hareid. From Hareid you take a small detour to Brandal and the Arctic Ocean Museum Aarvåk before taking the speedboat from Hareid to Ålesund. Ålesund is known for its Art Nouveau buildings, and is reputed to be one of Europe’s most beautiful harbour towns. From the city centre in Ålesund you can walk 418 steps up to Aksla, the mountain overlooking the town, where you can enjoy the spectacular view of the sea, the town, and the surrounding islands. On the way back to Fosnavåg, you can enjoy the evening sun and the sunset.
FROM FOSNAVÅG TO LOEN AND BACK TO FOSNAVÅG The trip to Loen starts from Fosnavåg, which lies far out on the coast, via Volda, through narrow valleys, and ever higher mountains, and on into Stryn and Loen. This area is surrounded by alpine mountains and topped with glaciers, with rushing waterfalls crashing down the mountainside and green meltwater in Lake Lovatnet. Take a bike ride along Lake Lovatnet, enjoy a refreshing bath and the view of the lake. Fancy a tour with Loen Skylift to enjoy the view from the restaurant at the top along with a good dinner? The trip back to Fosnavåg passes through a beautiful fjord and mountain landscape, allowing you to take in the view, with the sunset often painting the sky orange.

FROM FOSNAVÅG TO GEIRANGER AND BACK TO FOSNAVÅG The trip to Geiranger passes through the most beautiful landscape Norway has to offer. From the coast and the sea in Havlandet, you will find a winding road to mount Dalsnibba 1500 masl. Arriving in Geiranger, we recommend an overnight stay at Havila Hotel Geiranger. Take an evening hike to Storseterfossen waterfall. Take the ferry on the Geiranger fjord the next morning to Hellesylt. The Geiranger fjord is considered to be the most beautiful in the world. Arriving in Hellesylt, you drive to Øye and Urke, and take a ferry to Sæbø. Before driving back to Havlandet, you will pass Ørsta on your way back to Fosnavåg.

FROM FOSNAVÅG TO THE STAD PENINSULA AND BACK TO FOSNAVÅG The trip to the Stadlandet peninsula goes through mighty fjord landscapes via Larsnes, Fiskå, and Åheim to Leikanger. Make an exciting stop at the Norwegian Olive Centre in Åheim, a true gem where you can see the world’s most complete olive collection, - a gemstone. We recommend staying at Stad Hotel in Leikanger. After a delicious breakfast, the trip traverses Stadlandet to the surfing paradise in Hoddevika. On the trip back to Fosnavåg, take the Hakallestranda costal road and pay a visit to farm Hakallegarden. To return to Fosnavåg, take a ferry from Åram to Larsnes. Take the outer road back to Fosnavåg and enjoy the sunset on Hidsneset, which is perhaps the most beautiful sight you can see.
Dear Guest, welcome to Havlandet! Visit rules Dear Guest, welcome to Havlandet! Here, you will enjoy one of the most spectacular and most vulnerable nature areas in Norway. Please show consideration during your visit by following some simple rules. This way you can help ensure that your visit does not ruin our nature – or other people’s experiences.
8
01
Use designated camping areas
02
Do not leave traces behind you when walking in nature.
03
Follow marked trails. We will make sure we create new ones, too!
04
Keep dogs on a leash. In several places, sheep graze outside all year round, and on the island of Runde, the birds need rest to nest.
05
Bring waste to your own disposal spot. Do not leave litter in nature.
06
Use an available toilet. If that is not possible, dig a hole in the ground, and cover it after use. Do not use wet wipes because they take a long time to biodegrade in nature.
07
Respect private property. You are not allowed to camp less than 150 metres from a house or cabin in the countryside.
08
Respect bird and animal life wherever you go. Remember: You are the visitor, whereas animals and birds inhabit their natural habitat, doing important work.
09
Use existing campfire sites.
10
More than 70 per cent of planet Earth is covered by water. Norway manages seven times more sea than land. Please join us in our efforts to take good care of nature in Havlandet.

Three hundred locals are involved in the event, playing important roles behind the scenes and working in teams alongside professional actors. Kayaking in Havlandet
A calm sea between idyllic islets or giant waves heading out into the Atlantic? Herøy and Havlandet offer good paddling experiences for most visitors. You can feel the swells of the sea on a fine weather day, experience porpoises playing around your kayak in Skorpesundet, come across curious otters in Sævikane, and watch birds flock on the surface of the sea at Runde. And if the conditions at sea are perfect, then a kayaking visit to the cave on Runde is an experience you will never forget.
18
Diving in Havlandet Whether you want to go scuba diving in caves, wreck diving, or scuba diving in fantastic, colourful kelp forests, Havlandet offers fine and varied diving spots. In good weather, would you like to spend a long time at sea, perhaps hunting for more treasures off the coast of Runde? When the sea is at its calmest, the caves in the colourful bird cliffs on Runde are also worth investigating.
19
If the sea is rough, take a diving trip farther inland in the water between the islet and the skerries. Here you can see the giant pots that lie below the sea surface at the island of Herøy. Whether you’re diving far out at sea or closer to the shore, the water is always clear, with good visibility, and you’re likely to come across fish and seals. Or how about catching some scallops and catfish for dinner? Several finds are also worth exploring. Perhaps the most famous is Akerendam, which sank off Goksøyra on Runde, where the great gold find was made. Several canons still lie dotted around the seabed.
Havlandet – all year round Gold strewn on the seabed, majestic sights in the air, and stretching so far into the distance that the ocean looks

History of Herøy and Havlandet Open boats, oars, and sails. That’s how the locals fished the waters for hundreds of years. Then, towards the end of the 19th century, more and more deck boats arrived, and the beginning of the 20th century saw the arrival of the motor boat. And that changed everything. Fishermen could venture farther out to sea and the new boats were better equipped to withstand bad weather. And plenty of bad weather there was!
Fosnavåg is a traditional fishing village with urban qualities, where fishing has been important for the development of the city since the beginning of the 20th century. From now on, fishing is important in today’s modern society, and we make arrangements for fishing to be important for Fosnavåg in the future. Creating value in fisheries has a ripple effect on land because fish needs to be landed and processed. Boats need rebuilding and repairing, as they do on-board equipment, from high-tech kit to food provisions and bedding. A workplace on board a seiner provides two workplaces on land.

The flavours of Havlandet From catch to barrel. Life in Herøy and Havlandet has always been about fish and sea. Fishermen would venture far out to sea, looking for new species of fish and new fishing grounds. Nowadays, though, fishing boats also make shorter trips, ensuring seafood turns up straight on restaurant guests’ plates.
In Herøy and around Havlandet, there are several good restaurants to visit when you are hungry and thirsty after your excursion. After a great outdoor experience, there’s nothing better than sitting down to enjoy some good food and drink. Check out the many great eateries we have in Fosnavåg and around Herøy Havlandet. For top-notch gastronomical experiences, we recommend a trip to Kami Skotholmen. The urban coastal town of Fosnavåg, which is the furthest out at sea, offers many tasty local dishes full of special flavours, not to mention the salty taste on your lips as the wind blows in from the sea. We also offer magical sunsets while you enjoy a good meal with your tour companion! Don’t mention it – you’re welcome!

You will love shopping in Fosnavåg Where the land edge meets the open sea lies the urban coastal town of Fosnavåg, with its green lungs and Fosnavåg Park.
Make sure no boats will enter or leave the port of Fosnavåg, you may push the button – and take the Vågsbrua – a footbridge that takes you over to the other side at the far end of the sea in Vågen, and take a walk in historic surroundings through the new district on Vågsholmen, via Nørvågen, through Ura and back to downtown Fosnavåg. Prepare to get splashed by sea spray in the centre of town and see some major breakers coming in from the sea. Fosnavåg’s main street is, in fact, a seaside route into the harbour. In Fosnavåg, speciality shops lie dotted in a row. They offer a café culture, a view of large fishing boats passing by, and a view of the locals going about their day. Fosnavåg is your home harbour for new experiences.

Havlandet Herøy This is where people wait to get good enough weather to cross the Stadhavet Sea and gather together. With the sea in the midst of it all. The place is overwhelming. Sea and sky. Allowing you to cast your gaze for miles on end. This is Havlandet. A region difficult to leave. Though we know you must be keen to be getting home, we are happy to welcome you back!
