ARTS, CULTURE AND TOURISM
The region’s diverse array of arts and tourism attractions are highlighted in this year’s Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim Studios and Events Guide. Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games, Jann Stuckey, launched the 2013 guide to representatives from the Scenic Rim’s arts and tourism communities at The Centre. Mayor John Brent said the Cultural Trails guide shines a spotlight on the region’s thriving tourism and creative industries and offers a treasure trove of information for locals and tourists alike. “Visitors are drawn not only to the natural beauty and stunning landscapes of our region, but also to its rich heritage and wide range of recreational activities and experiences on offer here, everything from horse riding or rock climbing to relaxing at a local café or art gallery.” Among the attractions featured in the guide are country markets, agricultural shows and rodeos, wining and dining experiences, accommodation, tours and more. The program also incorporates the popular Studio Trails event, which this year features 86 local artists exhibiting at 24 locations across the Scenic Rim. The event will take place over five weekends in May and June. The free 2013 Cultural Trails of the Scenic Rim Studios and Events Guide is available from local visitor information centres, cultural centres, libraries, customer service centres and selected studios and galleries. Orchid Show Attracts Tourists and Locals Over six hundred people came through the doors of the Canungra School of Arts Hall for the Beaudesert and Districts Orchid and Foliage Society’s Autumn Show held on 9th and 10th March. Society President, Peter Rice said 622 people attended the show, many of whom had never been to Canungra before. Well-known orchid and foliage plant enthusiast, John Roberts, spoke on “Orchids for Beginners” on both days John’s talks are a regular event at the BDOFS Shows and his knowledge and experience are appreciated by the crowd. Several local growers had orchids for sale and were also able to give advice to visitors about growing orchids. Trade tables were busy selling orchid and plant growing accessories and plant products. Morning and afternoon tea was also available. The BDOFS Raffle winners were: Garden Hamper Raffle: • First Prize - Kerry of Nerang. • Second Prize - Rob Stinson of Bunburra. • Third Prize - Judy Balmer of Beaudesert. The Lucky Door Prize was won by Lyn Ives of Brighton. Peter said the Society’s efforts to promote the show were assisted by a grant

‘Lady Lee’ Supports National Breast Cancer Foundation
Lyncor Mining Group’s second ‘pink lady’ left for the mining area of Chinchilla on Thursday 28th February. The scraper was painted pink at Lyncor’s offices at Tamborine, in conjunction with the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Lyncor owner, Mark Rankin, said Lyncor will donate $5 per hour of the Caterpillar 637D Scraper’s running time to the National Breast Cancer Foundation for the lifetime of the machine.
Lady Lee is the second scraper Lyncor has painted pink and used to raise funds for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and is named after Lee Wilson, the wife of a CAT salesman who has survived breast cancer twice. The first scraper, named ‘Eveylyn’ was painted off site and left Lyncor in October last year and has raised over $3,000 so far. The scraper is working in the gas fields of Western Queensland. “The our support will remain in place for
the life of both of these machines,” said Mark, “So if the machines run for 10 years, we will keep donating $5 per machine for each hour of their running time to the National Breast Cancer Foundation.” The Rankin family’s philosophy is based on giving back to the community to help find a cure for this terrible disease which can affect mothers, wives and girlfriends. HOGS for Homeless gathered at Canungra Hotel
Footballers Raising Funds for Homeless Kids HOGS for Homeless charity ride started on 1st March, travelling through Nowra, Goulburn, Kurri Kurri, Tamworth, Canungra, Tweed Heads, South West Rocks, and finished at Parliament House, Sydney, on 7th March. The tour raised money for Father Chris Riley’s Youth Off The Streets charity while raising the profile of rugby league and the State of Origin series. Money raised included a $10,000 donation by the New South Wales government. During the tour, riders slept under the stars on some of the most famous football grounds in NSW to bring homelessness issues to attention. Along the way Brad and Nathan were joined by Andrew Johns, Glen Grief, Trent Barrett, Andrew Ryan, Alan Tongue, Paul Gallen, Kurt Gidley, Anthony Minichiello and Luke Lewis and held training clinics and fan meets during the tour.
HOGS For Homeless Ride Into Canungra Chance to Meet Football Heroes There was no State versus State tension in the air when Canungra State School’s rugby league team got the chance to meet foodball legends Brad Fittler and Nathan Hindmarsh at the Canungra Hotel on Tuesday 8th March. Brad and Nathan travelled to Canungra as part of their HOGS for Homeless Ride. The New South Wales Origin players were happy to chat to the boys and sign autographs for them. After lunch at the Hotel, the riders travelled on to Tweed Heads with a local motorcyclist club. “It was great to share the road with local riders and the track we rode was as good as any we’ve travelled on so far,” said Brad. “I can’t thank everyone enough for all their support during the Blues Hogs For Homeless Tour. I’m already looking forward to next year and making the tour bigger and better than ever!” he said.

Garrett Ferdinand Fitzgerald
24 May 1918 - 8th March 2013 Garrett Fitzgerald was born on 24th May 1918. He grew up on the family Beechmont dairy farm and attended Beechmont school. When the attendance was low at another small school at lower Beechmont the Fitzgerald children went there. Some had horses so they could get home in time to milk the cows but the rest had to walk. Garrett never really got over that four mile walk to and from school! Garrett finished school at age 13. At 14 he was sent out to a neighbouring property to chip corn. One memory he had of those days was having to eat on his own as workers were not allowed to eat with the boss. He slept under the house with washed corn bags for blankets. At about the age of 16 he got a horse and wagon to cart pigs and calves from Beechmont to Canungra. When work became very hard to find some of the family, including Garrett, went to Dalby on the Darling Downs to cart grain to the big silos. Garrett enjoyed horseriding and at one time took a horse from the farm without his father’s permission and then rode back to Beechmont to milk the cows. He also entered bull riding competitions and won the Queensland bull riding Championship. Bull rides were at Southport and the big win was at Merrimac. In 1939 he joined the 2/14 Light Horse Division and went to Enoggera to do a veterinary course. After completing the course he was posted to Caloundra, or Fraser’s Paddock as it was known then. One of his duties was to take sick horses to Fort Lyntton by train. Garrett remembered riding a horse while leading another from Yandina to Coolum with only a compass to find the directions. It was very scrubby country and he had been told to look out for the body of a missing girl who was feared to have been murdered. After leaving the army, he bought a 1939 truck and worked for the Main Roads Department. Gravel was loaded by a hand shovel and Garrett said you never looked back, just kept shovelling. In 1946 he bought a caravan to live in at Flagstone to be closer to work. Then he married Pauline Lois Henley on 12th December 1947 and they moved the caravan to Beechmont near Marshall’s Farm. Later Garrett bought the Shell depot known as Shell Villa in Appel Street, Canungra. Burlings service car used to leave from Shell Villa they transported passengers to Brisbane. Fuel was sold from the depot and delivered in 44 gallon drums. In 1950 their first child, Jennifer Margaret, was born. In 1950 Garrett bought his first brand new utility, then much to his wife’s disgust, traded it a few months later for a Diamond Tee truck to commence a transport business. He obtained permits to carry goods from Brisbane to Canungra. Later he purchased land near Canungra Creek from Alf Finch, the land

having been set aside for the proposed amalgamation of the shires. Mick O’Leary built the first depot in 1952, consisting of two ramps and a small office. During this time Garrett purchased another truck and employed a driver. Garrett built his home on this land and carted all the timber for it from Nerang. The house was built by Fred Quail in 1953. Fred went on to build the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Garrett and Pauline’s second child, Noela Joy, was born in 1954. By this time Garrett had several trucks and employed an office girl. In 1956 he won a ballot to run the transport and no longer had to apply for permits. He purchased a block of land from J and V Smith and a small piece off the railway which adjoined the original block. Keith Rawes built the second depot building which was not concreted at first. After being reported for carrying passengers on the trucks to Brisbane Garrett bought a hire car licence then later a taxi licence. In 1961, Garrett was elected to Beaudesert Shire Council, lost the seat for a couple of years but was reelected in 1964 where he remained until 1973. Garrett’s tales of his council years are many and varied. Projects completed during this time include: • The Lions Road to Kyogle; • Garrett applied for and got Rosin’s Lookout as a reserve; • Tamborine - Oxenford Road; • The Gorge road which had been talked about for many years was finally put through saving the long journey over Beechmont to the coast; • Sewerage and water for Canungra; and • Lighting for the showgrounds.
In 1961, Garrett bought a school bus to bring children into town from Flying Fox and Witheren schools when they closed down. He drove the bus himself much of the time and ran the school run for 25 years. In 1963 he bought a cream run and Golden Fleece fuel agency and house from Keith Kamholtz at Pine Creek. He obtained a permit to sell fuel from a pump and started the driveway at Canungra. Next came a passenger coach to transport soldiers from Brisbane to the coast during National service training. During the Vietnam war years the road to the coast was still over Beechmont. Garrett also transported pigs and calves to Casino. Many tales are told of pigs jumping off the top deck of the truck. One time, after losing a pig off the truck down near Woodenbong, Garrett continued on to Casino, bought some corn on the way home, found the pig, caught it and returned it back home. In 1975 Garrett purchased a unit at Northcliff Terrace on the Gold Coast. In 1980 Garrett had visions of building shops in Canungra, mainly a supermarket. At that time he was running a bus service to the Sundale Centre at Southport. He thought it would be better to keep the business in Canungra. His wife Pauline passed away suddenly at this time and things were put on hold. After taking a trip to America he spent the next few years planning Fitzgerald Plaza, Canungra. By 1985 the plans were completed and the shopping complex of five shops was built. Today Canungra FoodWorks, Flesser’s Bakery and InStyle occupy this building. In November 1985, he married Bonney Jannette Murray. Kevin Chidley bought the school bus in 1986 and Douglas Cameron purchased the transport business in 1987. Garrett opened the supermarket again after it had been closed for six months. He operated that business for the next eight years while also running the service station until 1993 when he leased that side. Garrett went to the Brisbane markets twice a week for fresh fruit and vegetables and drove either to Nerang or Beaudesert to do the banking as all the banks had closed in Canungra. Three times a week he went to the coast for fresh meat for the shop. In 1996 Garrett had a ruptured aneurysm of the abdominal aorta and spent twelve days in intensive care at Pindara Hospital. While recovering from this he bought a unit at Ocean Sands, Main Beach. He was still going to the Brisbane Markets at the age of 78. The supermarket was leased in January 1997. Two years later he sold the shopping complex, then the driveway. Over the years Garrett bought and sold several houses in Canungra – one in Appel Street, one in King Street, two in Lawton Lane. Garrett passed away on 8th March 2013. The Canungra Times, April 2013

Planning Scheme In Pipeline
The first step has been taken towards the development of a unified planning scheme for the Scenic Rim region. Council adopted the commencement report for the project at its meeting on 26th March, marking the beginning of a three-year process to draft the new document. Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Jennifer Sanders said the commencement of the project was an important milestone for the region. “Since the formation of the Scenic Rim region in 2008 we have been operating under three separate planning schemes. A single scheme will bring consistency to planning and development requirements across the region.” Currently the Scenic Rim operates under the Beaudesert Shire Planning Scheme 2007, Boonah Planning Scheme 2006 and the Ipswich Planning Scheme 2006. Mayor John Brent said delivery of a singular planning framework for the Scenic Rim would be a key achievement for the current Council. “Just as the Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011-2026 was a milestone document for the previous term of Council, the new planning scheme will be the legacy of the current Council in helping shape the Scenic Rim of the future,” Cr Brent said. Cr Sanders said extensive community consultation will be undertaken throughout the different stages of the project. “There will be many opportunities for residents to give their thoughts, ideas and feedback on their vision for the document and we will inform the community of future consultation dates once scheduled,” she said.
Putting the Bite on Wild Dogs
Council’s annual baiting program is once again putting the bite on wild dogs, and affected Scenic Rim land owners are being encouraged to get involved. The program, which has been running for a number of years, is designed to assist land owners with the management of wild dogs on their property. Mayor John Brent said wild dogs were an ongoing issue for residents, farmers and property owners across the region. “Council is committed to proactively assisting people with the control of wild dogs and other pest animals on their property. “Wild dogs can travel up to 30km per day and cross into other local government areas, so it is important for us to work collaboratively with other local councils and the State Government on this program.” In the 2011-2012 financial year Council conducted 50 wild dog baiting and trapping programs across the region. 170 land owners participated in the baiting program in the same period. “Generally areas with limited participation in the program have increased wild dog problems, so the more people we have actively engaged in this program, the more
Council is encouraging land owners to get involved in the wild dog baiting program
effective it will be,” Cr Brent said. Anyone wishing to participate who has not baited on their property before, or at any time in the last 12 months may contact Council to apply for a free Information Pack. Cr Brent said the baiting program formed part of Council’s comprehensive approach to wild dog management. “Baiting is just one of a number of control measures available, and I would encourage affected land owners to contact Council to discuss their options.” For further information about the baiting and wild dog management programs, or to report a wild dog sighting, contact Council’s Pest and Animal Management team on 5540 5444.

Show Society Committee At the Canungra Show Society’s AGM on Wednesday 6th March, President Darrel Biss and Secretary Shona Kraayvanger were reelected. Jodie Devlin was elected to the position of Treasurer and Andrew Kruger to the position of Assistant Treasurer. Community Groups Share In Over $40,000 Thirty-six community groups will share in more than $40,000 funding from Council’s Community Grants Program. A total of $41,463 will be divided among the successful groups under Round 3 of the 2012/13 program, including: • Tamborine Equestrian Group (purchase PA system and microphones); • Canungra RSL Sub-Branch (purchase PA system); • Canungra Owls Soccer Club (conduct field maintenance); • Beechmont State School P&C (purchase a stage for the Hall on Graceleigh); • Canungra Social Swim Club (purchase a laptop and printer). Council has allocated $175,000 to fund the four rounds of the program this financial year, with submissions for Round Four closing on 10th May. The Community Grants Program provides assistance to community groups within the region to help fund projects and events that benefit the community. More than $73,000 was provided to community groups in the previous two funding rounds.

ANZAC Day Celebrations
By Keith Cogzell At 5.30am on Thursday 25th April, local residents and visitors will gather in the early dawn silence to remember those who created the ANZAC legend. Almost a century after the historic Gallipoli landing, observance of ANZAC Day has never been stronger. Last year more than 1,000 people attended the dawn service in D J Smith Park, Canungra, to show their respect and gratitude. Later in the morning, a similar number turned out for the ANZAC march and memorial service which followed. Canungra RSL has organised our ANZAC Day services for many decades and this year the day’s activities start with the stirring Dawn Service at 5.30am in D J Smith Park. The ANZAC Day march will step off from Canungra State School at 9.30am and travel up Christie Street for the morning memorial service, also in D J Smith Park. Ex servicemen and women, current serving personnel, relatives of those who
served, community groups and students from Canungra State School will remember those who so bravely served, suffered or made the ultimate sacrifice. It was those young men on the Gallipoli Peninsula 98 years ago who established the ANZAC name and more importantly, the ANZAC spirit. Their ideals of courage, endurance and mateship are relevant to all Australians today as we deal with the hardship of cyclones, floods and bush fires in our daily lives. In 1916, the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, ANZAC Day gained its official name and the first services were held in Australia, New Zealand, England and Egypt for the troops still stationed there. In the 1940s, Second World War veterans joined parades around the country. In the ensuing decades, returned servicemen and women from conflicts in Korea, Malaya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Iraq, Timor and Afghanistan have taken their place with pride.

The Outpost Cafe has beaten pie giant Goldsteins Bakery to claim the title of ‘Best Pies’ in Gold FM’s Best of the Gold Coast competition. Breakfast announcers Richard Fowler, Bridget Daley and Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt named a ‘Best of’ category on air each weekday over four weeks. Listeners nominated and voted for their favourite business in that category. Outpost Cafe owner, Andrew Covino said the award meant a lot to the staff and management at The Outpost Cafe, particularly when they were
nominated against Goldsteins Bakery which has over a dozen stores on the Gold Coast. “We’ve had a lot of new people coming in to try the pies,” said Andrew, “Being handmade on the premises means they are really fresh and we use the best local ingredients. We are really happy to have been recognised by our customers in this way and would like to thank everyone who voted for us.” Andrew and his brother Michael opened The Outpost Cafe at Coco’s Shopping Centre,

Goat Track Time Frame ‘Not Yet Known’
Tamborine Mountain Road between Mt Tamborine and Canungra, locally referred to as The Goat Track, has been closed since 26th January 2013 due to a severe pavement and embankment failure along a one way section of the road. This was caused by the extreme wet weather associated with ex-tropical cyclone Oswald. The subsidence runs along the full width of the roadway for approximately 100 metres. The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is undertaking investigations including drilling bore holes and geotechnical assessments to determine the amount of damage done to the road foundation and the surrounding batters. However, further subsidence has been observed since the original slip and with the continued wet weather even more subsidence is occurring. In a statement TMR stated that until the full extent of the damage is determined, the treatment methodologies and timeframe for reconstruction can not be determined. Local residents are able to access their properties. However, it should be noted that motorists using the section of The Goat Track between Beaudesert-Nerang Road and the slip zone are responsible for their own safety and should access this section with due care. No vehicles, including motorcycles are permitted past the road closed signs to the slip area due to the dangerous conditions. Motorists are advised to take alternative routes to access Tamborine Mountain. TMR understands the frustration that detours can cause the travelling public and appreciates your patience as a solution to re-open the road is investigated. A timeframe for re-opening the road is not yet known. Updates on the status of the road will be available on the 131940 website (www.131940.qld.gov.au).

Gareth worked methodically with his new team to learn the bike and the extensive electronics package. He said he is ready to start racing at the Lausitzring for round 1 of the IDM Championship. “I feel right at home with the Yamaha family and I am excited and confident about the challenge ahead,” said Gareth. Monster Energy Factory Yamaha team have returned to home base in Germany and will be on track for the final pre season test at the Lausitzring from 5th to 7th April.

From My Window...
I found a quote on the internet recently by Czech novelist Milan Kundera: “Dogs are our link to paradise. They don’t know evil or jealousy or discontent. To sit with a dog on a hillside on a glorious afternoon is to be back in Eden, where doing nothing was not boring--it was peace.” Let’s face it - dogs rarely look anything but happy. They are always happy to see you when you get home (unless they’ve done something they shouldn’t have, then they look guilty). They aren’t thinking of the million things they should be doing. They are in the moment. They are here, now and that’s all that matters. How often do we make time to do nothing? To watch a sunset or take a breather without talking on the phone, checking Facebook or surfing the net? Doing nothing is not really doing nothing. It is recharging, letting yourself have space. Too often I find myself thinking hours, days or weeks ahead and not concentrating on here and now. I think I don’t have enough time to enjoy what I am doing right now - I have to be thinking about what comes next. Well, in reality, here and now is all we have. Worrying about what comes next isn’t going to achieve anything. I’m not saying don’t plan for the future, just that sometimes we all need to enjoy what is happening now. Everyone seems to lead incredibly busy lives these days. I drive to work because I don’t think I have time to walk the 10 minutes into town. Lazy? Absolutely. But I think I am so time poor that those eight minutes could be used for something else. Riduculous. Have a great month, everyone. I’m going to get my dogs ... and sit on a hillside. Peace.

Again our Society conducted another successful Show in your most appealing township with 622 visitors having been attracted from a wide range of locations, many of whom had never been to Canungra before. However, many of the visitors were from within the immediate Canungra area and many of these have visited our Shows on many previous occasions. Thus, I would consider them to be our regulars whose awareness of our Shows is undoubtedly heightened by the promotion that you so generously and freely provide. So, to the locals who are so supportive of our efforts, we are most sincerely grateful. Similarly, your local councillor, deputy mayor, Virginia West , is so supportive and regardless of whatever else demands her attention, Virginia always finds time to attend. Lastly, our efforts to promote our Shows have been appreciated by the Scenic Rim Regional Council resulting in our having received an additional grant which was used to have produced promotional signs and a banner that were positioned so widespread that very few within the Beaudesert, Mt Tamborine and Canungra would not have been aware of the holding of another “Orchid and Foliage Show” in a most supportive Canungra. Local Farrier Tim Heeb has been rewarded for his dedication by taking out the 2011 and 2012 Australian Farriers and Blacksmiths Open High Point. Tim competes at shows around Australia including Toowoomba Royal, the Ekka, Heavy Horse Competition at Gatton, Tamworth Nationals and Adelaide Royal to score points in the national Farriers and Blacksmiths compeition. H also competed at the Calagary Stampede for the first time in 2012. Tim placed 7th out of 72 in a blacksmithing event against 9 previous world champions. Although Tim has been around horses all his life and has ‘aways’ ridden, his career path was not clear until Year 12 when Tim did work experience with his uncle who is a farrier. He decided immediately that was what he wanted to do. Upon completing Year 12, Tim went on to Scone where he achieved Dux of Scone Agricultural College - Equine. Tim is currently studying to do the Farriers International Testing System exam

Tim’s wife, Shannon said Tim goes above and beyond what most people would do for their job. “It’s his hobby and his occupation,” said Shannon, “He starts work between 4 and 5am, comes home, lights up the forge and practices into the night.” Originally from Gympie, Tim has lived in Tamborine for the last three years. Shannon said Tim has learned a lot through competing and his study. “They all talk about their work at the shows he goes to and it helps them learn from each other,” she said. Unfortunately, Tim has been unable to work for several months following an accident when his leg was crushed by a tree on his property at Tamborine. It has been a slow recovery but he is now back in full work and looking forward to finishing his studies and competing at the World Championships at the Calgary Stampede again this year. AWL Pets of the Month Oscar 15158: With those gorgeous green eyes and beautiful grey coat, how could you not want to take him home? He is an affectionate boy who enjoys some company. He’d make a beautiful addition to the family as he enjoys being with people. Oscar is five years old and is a domestic medium hair cross. Oscar is $120 and is already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated.
Richard 16316: Richard is a dog who turns heads. He has a great personality and would love a home to call his own. Richard is a mixture of two active breeds - Bearded Collie and Australian Kelpie - so he will need a lot of exercise and preferably a large yard to run in. However both these breeds are known as active, lively, affectionate, alert and great family pets. Beardies take two to three years to mature, so you might need to be prepared for typical puppy activity for a little longer than usual. Richard is $240 and is already desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated.

Eulo-Currawinya National Park, South-West Queensland By Melissa Whitby Recently, two friends and I headed to inland Queensland to re-discover the amazing world of desert birds. Our destination was the small township of Eulo located between Cunnamulla and Thargomindah. My mission was to photograph the Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo. We decided to stay at the Eulo Queen Hotel and use this as a base to visit birding areas around Eulo, Bindegolly National Park and Currawinya National Park. Our first morning in the Eulo township blessed us with views of Spotted Bowerbird, White-breasted Woodswallow, Grey-crowned Babblers, Blue Bonnets, Horsefield’s Bronze-Cuckoo, Diamond Dove and a small flock of Budgies flying over the nearby Paroo River. Early morning is the best time for viewing birds in Australia. We heard of a bore about 20 kilometres from Eulo which is a great place to see two unique inland birds, the Bourke Parrot and Hall’s Babbler. After a morning of searching we found the Bourke Parrot, Brown Treecreeper, Hooded Robin and Chestnut-breasted Quail-Thrush but no Babbler. For three avid birdwatchers, this was a great start to our trip. Our next stop was Lake Bindegolly. This wetland area when full of water is an important area for birds to breed. Although the lake was down it still provided some amazing views of the birds that live within its systems. Water birds such as Pelicans, Royal Spoonbills, Blacktailed Native Hens, Pink-eared Ducks and Freckled Ducks were very easy to view. Small birds such as the Orange Chat, Crimson Chat, White-winged Fairy Wren and Budgies were easily viewed close to the water’s edge either drinking or feeding. I was concerned to see several feral cats in the short time we visited the Lake. Feral cats have huge impacts on native wildlife in Australia and have no place in our natural environment. To finish our day off, we visited Thargomindah and enjoy the feel of a great outback town! Last but not least, we visited the iconic Currawinya National Park. It was here I finally photographed the Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo and spent time observing them. Currawinya National Park has extensive inland Lake systems which are a World recognised RAMSAR site for birds breeding in Australia. Some of the amazing birds we encountered in this National Park were Mulga Parrots, Mallee Ringnecks, Red-necked Avocet, Pelicans, Hoary-headed Grebes and Royal Spoonbills. When visiting Currawinya, I recommend a good 4WD and be self-sufficient with food and other supplies. My short trip out west was an incredible success and I would recommend others to visit this amazing part of Queensland.

FLOOD/RAIN EVENT RECOVERY As the recovery from the recent rain continues, we in the Scenic Rim are beginning to find the road ahead long and challenging. However our community is resilient and strong and we will overcome this adversity that has tested us all so severely. With the sun finally appearing and the creek levels dropping the road crews have finally been able to commence repairs on the most urgent damage and assess further damage as a result of the prolonged wet weather. Bitumen and gravel roads do not generally fare well in prolonged wet weather. Road and Bridge damage to date: • Sealed roads $5 million +; • Unsealed roads $3 million +; • Culverts $1 million; • Minor bridge repairs $500,00; • Repairs to NDRRA projects from previous years rain events $3 million +; • Villis Bridge, Tarome replacement $1.5 - $2 million; • Head Rd,Carneys Creek damage $3 million+; • Gap Creek Culvert repair $250,000+; • Murphy Bridge and Geiger Bridge Canungra - still under assessment but likely replacement. In the lead up to this recent event Council was finalising the awarding of contracts for works to repair damage from the 2011 flood and now finds itself managing infrastructure repairs from 2011, the rain event of 2012 and the 2013 storm. I can assure you Council is working with all levels of government to attain funding and assistance during the reconstruction process. Retired Brigadier Bill Mellor has been appointed as a direct link between councils in South East Queensland and the State Government to streamline this process and ensure a timely delivery of work. So you can see we have a long recovery period ahead of us all. For regular updates on road repair work check Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov. au. All residents will be receiving a flyer in the coming days documenting the progress of all recovery works within Scenic Rim. COUNCIL COMMUNITY GRANT Applications for the next round close on 10th May, so I encourage all sporting and community groups to submit an application for any events or assets your club may require. The first round for the year brought successful applications to Canungra Swim Club, Canungra Owls Soccer Club, Canungra RSL, Beechmont School P and C and Beechmont Sporting Association. Congratulations to you all. WILD DOG BAITING PROGRAM Any landowners who have not baited in the last 12 months, or who wish to participate in the program, are encouraged to contact Council’s Pest and Animal Management Department on 5540 5444 to determine eligibility and receive a 1080 Information Pack. The program is being coordinated with other South East Queensland councils in an attempt to gain a more effective outcome. CONDOLENCES Sadly Garrett Fitzgerald, a former resident of Beechmont, business owner in Canungra and councillor for a number of years in the Beaudesert Shire Council passed away recently aged 94 years. I know the community’s thoughts are extended to his wife and family who are known to so many of us. Garrett left a legacy to the town of Canungra with Fitzgerald Plaza being the shopping area where Foodworks is currently situated, and in his time as councillor he was instrumental in getting the township of Canungra on reticulated water and sewage, lights at the Canungra Showgrounds, the “Gorge Road” past the army barracks constructed to make the Gold Coast more accessible, Lions Road to Kyogle finalised for easier access to NSW, and at Beechmont the acquisition of the land at Rosins Lookout which is now a valuable site for hangliders and paragliders. 5th March - Open Night The school’s annual open night was an opportunity for parents to meet their child’s teacher, visit their child’s classroom and become familiar with the expectations for homework and class behaviour. Teachers presented a short talk, then the children are able to show their parents around their classroom, as well as the library, computer room, and other areas. 7th March - Combined Senior Band Day At Beechmont The Senior Band travelled to Beechmont State School to practise and perform with their band. This was a great opportunity for all students involved to perform with new musicians. 12th March - Playground Leaders Announced Selected Year 7 students have been training in Group Management Skills, Communication Skills, Games Leading Skills and Responsibility for making a contribution to the school. They will be rostered in the Prep and Year 1 - 3 Playgrounds to teach and supervise games for small groups of children, to help these students play co-operatively and fairly and to make the games fun. The 2013 Playground Leaders were presented with their badges at parade.

This is a fantastic opportunity for students to meet authors and attend sessions given by authors. 15th March - Clean Up Schools Day Students helped to collect rubbish around the school grounds, to help keep the school tidy and clean. 15th March - Interschool Sports Selected Years 4 to 7 students were involved in Interschool T-Ball/Softball/ Kanga Cricket at Tamborine Mountain, competing against students from St Bernards’ State School and Tamborine State School. 16th March - Creekbank Cleanup Students, parents and staff volunteered for a weed clean up maintenance day on the Kindy site as well as other areas. A sausage sizzle was provided after the working bee for all volunteers. 19th March - Choir Captains Announced The 2013 Choir Captains were announced on parade. Congratulations to Ebony Thompson and Morgan Lee.

School Happenings - Canungra State School - March 2013 22nd March - Harmony Day Everyone was encouraged to wear orange to school to celebrate Harmony Day and the theme of “Everyone Belongs”. Harmony Day was established in 1999 and provides an opportunity to celebrate cultural diversity and to commit to the values of mutual respect, fairness and acceptance, and saying ‘no’ to racism.

28th March - Easter Parade And Raffle On the last day of term, the whole school participates in an Easter Parade, followed by a monster Easter raffle. All students are encouraged to decorate a hat, make an Easter bonnet or basket, or make an Easter mask or poster. All students received an Easter egg following the parade.
Clean Up Working Bee
By Jodie Clifford, Green Team The Canungra Green Team hosted our first Working Bee event for 2013 on Saturday 16th March with a Weed ‘clean up’ of our Kindy Planting project. We registered as a Clean Up Australia Day site in addition to hosting a School’s Clean Up day on Friday 8th March. What a resounding success the day was! After having to postpone the event due to rain a fortnight ago - we were blessed with perfect weather and 38 keen participants willing to make a difference. Recent weather conditions have ensured that plant growth has been prolific over the last few months. Both native and exotic plant species have seen terrific growth and volunteers hand-removed 27 bags of weed species. The focus of the event was to clear an area around native species to ensure a clear area for managing the remainder of the site with a spraying program. Many of the volunteers attending were involved in the planting of the Kindy site in September 2012 and it was fantastic to see participants take ownership of the site. A number of the attendees were children and they will reap the rewards of being involved in such an inclusive community event. Not only will they have the satisfaction of planting and watching the growth of these plants, but they will also learn the importance of maintaining a project and being involved with people from the local community caring for the fantastic area in which they live and learn. We would like to thank all volunteers who contributed to the event, particularly our groundsman, Trevor Skelton, and Principal, Colleen Murphy, for their tireless enthusiasm for Green Team projects. A special thanks to FoodWorks for again supplying the food for our sausage sizzle. This Green Team Event illustrates the important contribution that a group of committed individuals can make to our community and local environment.

Canungra C&K Community Kindergarten held an Easter Lunch for children and parents on Tuesday 26th March. Centre Director, Karen Price said it was a lovely day with many parents enjoying their time at the Kindy. Canungra State School held their annual Easter parade on Thursday 28th March. The students were delighted by a visit from the Easter Bunny during the parade.

Broken City
Rated: MA. Length: 1 hour, 49 mins. Director: Allen Hughes Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones. Broken City is a modern day film noir directed by Allen Hughes, who also directed The Book of Eli with his brother Albert Hughes. Billy Taggart (Mark Wahlberg) had to leave the police force after he was exonerated of shooting a suspect in cold blood. However, the mayor Nick Hosetler (Russell Crowe) promised one day he would be repaid. Seven years later, Hosetler hires Taggart, who now scrapes by as a private detective, to see who his wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones) is having an affair with. Of course, the real reason why he’s been hired is much darker than that and Taggart soon finds himself in over his head in shady deals and political skulduggery. Broken City is nothing new in terms of its genre but good performances from all involved make it highly enjoyable. Alona Tal, whom some may remember as Jo from Supernatural, plays Billy’s secretary and Barry Pepper is in fine form as Hosetler’s opponent for election.

Eat Local Week Back For 2013
The Scenic Rim’s popular Eat Local Week is back for a third course in 2013. This year’s event will be served up from 23rd to 30th June with an array of activities already in the planning stages. The inaugural Eat Local Week was staged in June 2011 to promote the region’s agriculture sector, food producers and tourism operators who were passionate about local food. With the rain events experienced in early 2011 and again in early 2012, Eat Local Week provided an opportunity to raise the profile of those local food producers who were seriously impacted. “We find ourselves in a similar situation in 2013 and Eat Local Week will provide increased exposure for our primary producers, the food and beverage trade, and tourism operators,” Mayor John Brent said. “The quality of our local produce is second to none and Eat Local Week is a showcase of the finest food the Scenic Rim has to offer. The event continues to increase the profile of the Scenic Rim as a
destination for both tourists and foodies alike.” Last year’s Eat Local Week was a great success with many activities and events selling out. Beechmont’s Zest Fest set the pace for the week, with 400 people enjoying live music, storytelling, sustainable living and gardening workshops and local food, art and craft in a scenic location on the mountain. Kids Holiday Cooking Classes at Boonah and Beaudesert taught school children about healthy eating and nutrition. Other popular activities included the Towri Sheep Cheeses tours, the Kalfresh Carrot Field Day and the Dennis family’s ‘Robotic Dairy’, all drawing visitors from as far as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The Canungra Producers Dinner, Boonah Dines Out! and FEAST dinners were all sell-out events. The median house price for the Canungra district rose by 4.5% in 2012 to $450,000. ‘We have already sold five properties in the area so far this year’ said John Tetlow from Geoff Brand Real Estate. Buyers remain cautious and still expect a bargain, as it is a buyer’s market. However, it is already starting to become a more balanced market place. Last year there were 67 properties sold in the local area, up about 15% from the previous year. There are numerous houses under construction and plenty of buyers showing interest in reasonably priced properties. Great Start To Home Ownership
Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause is urging local residents considering buying their first home to apply for the State Government’s $15,000 Great Start Grant. Mr Krause said more Queenslanders were realising their dream of home ownership thanks to the grant, which is available to first home buyers who are building or buying a new house, townhouse, apartment or unit, including off-the-plan properties and owner-builder projects. “I realise that for young couples and families money is always a constraint, which is why I am encouraging all eligible residents in the Beaudesert Electorate to take advantage of the $15,000 on offer,” Mr Krause said. Mr Krause said a new Great Start Grant website and advertising campaign aimed at promoting the advantages of the grant has been launched. “We want to make sure all residents looking to move into their first home are aware of the grant,” he said. “The advertising will really tap into the aspirations of first homebuyers and their families.
“The Great Start Grant is also about boosting construction industry in the Beaudesert Electorate, one of Queensland’s four economic pillars. Mr Krause said the Great Start Grant was a sustainable and targeted investment in the property and construction industry. “It’s not a short-term sugar hit. It’s here to stay,” he said, “Knowing there is a $15,000 grant available will encourage Queenslanders to buy new, rather than old. “The Great Start Grant is just one of many initiatives we have implemented to make home ownership more affordable. “Last year we reinstated the Principal Place of Residence Concession, saving residents up to $7,000 on the purchase of the family home, whether it be new or well established. “We’ve also made it easier to buy and sell homes by scrapping sustainability declarations and giving people the choice to include rainwater tanks and energy efficient hot water systems in new homes.” Full eligibility criteria and application forms for the Great Start Grant are available at www.qld.gov.au/greatstartgrant.

Defence training includes firing practices with live ammunition, explosives and lasers that generally occur daily between 0700h – 1600h. Night time practices also occur and are generally completed before 2200h. Unauthorised entry to the training area is prohibited and exposes any trespasser to serious injury or death. Unexploded ordnance from Defence activities are extremely dangerous and should not be handled. Persons found trespassing within the Canungra Training Area boundary will be prosecuted. Canungra Girls Clean Up at Nationals in Sydney
The Miniature Horse Association of Australia held its annual National show at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre at Horsley Park over the Easter weekend. Competitors travel from all over the country to attend the most prestigious event on the calendar, including Western Australia. Some bring one horse and others bring 10 or more - all out to win that important title. There were over 250 miniature horses attending this year’s show. Vicki Cogzell, Karen MacAndrew and Monique Morcus took a show team of four horses between them. They are thrilled with their winnings including three National Champions, a Reserve National Grand Champion and several top five awards in the variety of classes they entered. There was only one class entered where they didn’t claim a ribbon and at the time of writing they still had one day left of showing. The Show runs for five days, starting at 8.30am with some classes running late into the evening. The classes range from halter, trail, jumping, harness and youth. There is also an annual Trans Tasman Youth Challenge with the MHAA youth team Competing against the New Zealand NZMHA youth team, which is great for the crowd to get involved. Monique said this may be her last year attending the Show, as she found it difficult to prepare and exercise the horses to be in their best possible condition due to her work commitments. “It ended up working out well, three weeks out from the competition, Vicki brought her lovely colt to our place and I did the morning shift, and Vicki did afternoon shift while I put in some late hours at work. It was a Champion combination and I couldn’t have done it without Vicki or Karen,” said Monique.

Foodworks February Sportsperson The Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month for February is rising swimmer Erynn Phillips. The 2012/13 swimming season has seen Erynn’s skills as a swimmer develop some real form. She started the season off in October with the Canungra Social Swim Club as a nine year old and competed in the Beaudesert Swimming Carnival in November in this category. At Beaudesert, Erynn achieved three third places in breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle. Throughout the season she has swum in carnivals at Miami, Southport and Canungra. At the inaugural Canungra Swimming Carnival, Erynn won two bronze medals and a silver and achieved qualifying times to attend the Gold Coast Regional swimming carnival. She won all her events at the school swimming carnival and went on to represent Canungra at the District Championships held at the Runaway Bay Sports Super Centre. At the Canungra Swimming Club’s end of season trophy night, Erynn was first in the 10 year old girls category and received the Junior Girl Champion perpetual trophy. Following her outstanding progress this season, Erynn plans to swim throughout winter and make the next summer swimming season even better. As the winner of the February Foodworks Sportsperson of the Month, Erynn will receive a$50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. Sport Women’s Team Kick Off
By David Baker, Canungra Owls Soccer Club The Canungra Owls women’s team returned to the competition on Wednesday 20th March under lights at Moriarty Park with a hard fought two-all draw with Tugun. Well done ladies. The first game of the season is never easy but at least the nerves will be gone, if not the aches and pains. Thanks to the combined efforts of coach David Huynh, manager Lana Rankin and President Bren Dalby the women’s team was put back together after a year off with a few old heads and some young blood. George Dalby had the field and linemarking in very good order for the first game of the year . Thanks George. A working bee was conducted on 9th March to prepare the fields, goals and equipment for the new season. Thank you to Canungra Foodworks for supplying food and drink to the appreciative workers. Thanks also to Tim Daniels for answering an SOS and slashing the field when the mower played up like a two bob watch. Many thanks to Pete Teveluwe, George and Bren Dalby, Alesia and Greg McCabe, Bec and Don Bell-McNee, Connie Sutherland, Nathalie and Peter Parry, Sandy and Lane Middis, Sam Wilson, Lana Rankin and the many young players who put in a big effort. Without volunteers Canungra would not have this community sporting club which this year boasts just in excess of 100 players. Canungra is fielding Under 6, 7, 8, 9 Green; 9 Gold; 10,11,13,15 Green and 15 Gold teams this year. Their seasons kick off 12th and 13th April. Good luck to all the players, coaches and managers. We hope you all have a great time, make new friends and that the many parents and guardians also make new friends in the community! The club relies on volunteers to coach these teams. This is a large commitment so we applaud the community spirit shown by Kellie Linnehan, Ricky Salisbury, Stephen Mills, Colin Hasler, Greg Mathers, Shane (Jack) Jackson, Daryl Skerke, John Harrison Snr, Will Sayer and David Huynh for taking this on. Football Gold Coast is conducting FREE grass roots coaching courses on 7th April at Moriarty Park. If you are interested please go Football Gold Coast website to register. Anyone interested in football or who has a child playing and wants to learn more about the game and how it is coached is encouraged to attend. The more the merrier. The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to conduct meat tray raffles every second Sunday lunchtime. We require volunteers for this vital fundraiser which keeps our fees low. Scenic Rim Spectacular Swim Meet The day dawned in a blaze of sunshine, to the relief of the organisers of the Scenic Rim Spectacular Swim Meet held at Canungra Swimming Pool on Saturday 23rd February 2013. Over 200 competitors registered for the event with approximately 400 people attending the day. Canungra Swimming Pool had never seen anything like it. The grounds were full of colourful tents and excited competitors, with cars parking all down Monarch Drive. The Scenic Rim Swimming Club, based in Beaudesert, were the organisers of the event but the swimming venue selected was Canungra. Canungra Swimming Club manned a BBQ on the day.
By Robyn Lee Swim Clubs attended from within the Scenic Rim and the Gold Coast area such as Beaudesert, Southport, Coomera and Palm Beach-Currumbin. Canungra Swimming Club can be proud of the children who competed on the day. They all swam personal bests. The stars of the team were Joseph Sheppard winning five medals and Erynn Phillips winning three medals. It is encouraging that a small town such as Canungra can be host to such a major sporting event. There were many favourable remarks made on the day by visiting swimmers about the friendly nature of the town.

By Robyn Lee On Saturday 23rd March the Canungra Social Swim Club held its Trophy Night at the Canungra RSL. Everyone enjoyed a buffet meal followed by dancing to music provided by DJ Visual Beats. It was a great night for members, with their families and friends, to reminisce about the season that had been and what lay ahead. It was also an opportunity to thank Ann from Foodworks for their generous support throughout the Swimming Season. President, Amanda Thorogood, presented the trophies and medallions to swimmers who had participated in the Championship Swim Night held a week previously. The Perpetual trophies and shield winners for the 2012/13 swim season were announced.
