Blazing the “Open Studios” Trail in May
Fourteen local and regional artists will inspire you with their talents during the 3rd and 4th of May as the seventh annual Studios of the Scenic Rim start in Canungra and Beechmont. Beechmont this year has Wendi Trulson and Nicole Crosswell at the Beechmont Community Centre displaying a diverse array of mixed media art, textile and bundle dyeing. Workshops are available. Wendi’s love of nature and natural fibres has lead her to the alchemy of natural dying using the technique of bundle dyeing. The bundling pot will be on site so if you wish to learn more about this practice for yourself please make a booking Nicole is a Visual Artist who has worked with fabric sculptures and installations for many years. Andy Reimanis, mixed media will be celebrating the beauty of the Green Cauldron in his work at Binna Burra Lodge. Situated at Wallaby Ridge Retreat, Wonglepong, six very individual artists are covering water colour, photography, ceramic, sculpture and mosaic. There will be demonstrations, displays, poetry readings and workshops for all the family. There is delicious country cooking and original art for sale. Tamlyn Geiger’s Red Door Studio in Appel Street, Canungra, will be open with beautiful watercolour mixed media and demonstrations throughout the weekend. Farewell
After 11 years, Gail Morris and Cheryl Barnes of Flutterby Fantasy closed the doors for the last time on Monday 31st March 2014. Gail and Cheryl started Flutterby Fantasy in 2003 in Lawton Lane - selling a range of gift, books, crystals, clothing and hand made items. They moved to the building adjacent to the Canungra Motel in 2007. Gail and Cheryl said they will both be semi-retired and are looking forward to spending more time with family. Rain Welcomed!
Canungra received 160mm of rain overnight on Thursday 20th March, bringing total rainfall for the month to over 200mm throughout the area. While the downpour was welcomed, it also caused widespread flooding in some areas, particularly those with low lying causeways. Rymera Road and Coburg Road and were impassable for over 24 hours, while residents of Illinbah also waited for floodwaters to reside before being able to travel into town. O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard Manager, Tamil Mani said he arrived at the Vineyard in the morning to find chairs and tables in the fence, washed downstream by floodwaters. Flooding receeded quickly in all areas, with all roads reopened within 48 hours. The Bureau of Meterology has predicted rainfall of over 200mm over the next three months for the region.
Show Society Update
At the Canungra Show Society’s Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 5th March, a Committe was not elected due to a lack of volunteers. The meeting was then postponed until Wednesday 2nd April. If a Committe is not elected at this meeting the future of the Show Society will be in doubt. The postponed AGM was held after this edition of The Canungra Times went to print. Tamborine Village Lions Club – Community Spirit By Rayna Bond
Tamborine Village Lions’ main goal is to raise funds for the community and the people within. The biggest fundraiser is a monthly market, held the first Sunday of every month, and the raffles run there. We are lucky to have businesses support our raffles by donating goods and services. Without their support we would not be able to run the raffles and raise the amount of money we do. One of our main supporters is Tamborine Village Traders. Eric and Christina Ball (owners) have been part of our community for over 14 years. They have been generous in donating a wheelbarrow for our Father’s Day raffle last year. They have also contributed to other initiatives that Tamborine Village Lions have been involved with. Last year they donated twine and razor blades that were included in packs sent to Papua New Guinea to help support local women in home birthing. Last but not least they stock Lion Club Fudge and Mints! What a great effort.

On Sunday 6th April the Tamborine Village Lion market will start a new raffle. First Prize - Trade Wheelbarrow filled with gardening goodies.
Second Prize - Vehicle Service to the value of $150 from On the Road Automotive Repairs. Third Prize - Trailer load of firewood – donated by a Tamborine Village Lions member. The raffle will be drawn at the Tamborine Village markets on Sunday 1st June. Tamborine Village Lions are also donating all monies raised from the sale of food at the April markets to Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. The vision is 100% survival for kids with cancer. Every child deserves a chance at a healthy life! This is a very worthwhile project for everyone in the community. Canungra Library will soon be starting a junior reading club on Wednesday afternoons, and we are looking for volunteers who might be interested in sitting with children and listening to them read. Landslip Repairs
Department of Transport and Main Roads has said motorists should continue to expect delays on Lamington National Park Road while seven landslips are repaired. Delays of up to five minutes should be expected Monday to Friday from 6am to 6pm. Intermittently, longer delays of 15 - 30 minutes may also be experienced. These delays are unavoidable as some construction activities can only be done during the day. Night work to install large metal nails into the landslip sites is progressing well. Lamington National Park Road is closed Sunday to Thursday from 7pm to 5am. During these works, a drill rig and other machinery is taking up most of the road. Night work is expected to be complete by mid April 2014. Work at all seven sites will be complete in mid 2014.

Raising Funds for Leukemia Foundation
Josh Bell-McNee and Brie Perryman took part in the World’s Greatest Shave on Saturday 15th March at Canungra State School hall. Brie and Josh had family members take turns shaving their heads, including Josh’s brother Aiden who had taken part in Shave for a Cure the week before. Brie raised $1,000 and Josh and Aiden raised $540. Both of them would like to thank everyone who donated money and helped on the day.

Motorists can expect short delays on Mundoolun Connection Road from Monday 10th March 2014 until the end of June 2014. These works are part of a Safer Roads Sooner project from Beaudesert-Nerang Road (Wonglepong Road) to Beaudesert-Beenleigh Road.

Council Restructure To Enhance Efficiency

An internal restructure of Scenic Rim Regional Council is being undertaken to enhance efficiency and deliver cost savings to the community. “Council is continually reviewing its resourcing and examining more efficient ways to deliver services to the community and this restructure is one such outcome,” Council Chief Executive Officer Craig Barke said. “The changes being implemented represent the first significant organisational restructure of Council in almost three years and will result in the number of managerial positions being reduced by three. “In addition to streamlining the management framework, Council is also seeking expressions of interest from staff in relation to voluntary separation from the organisation. “This EOI process is voluntary and may provide staff who were considering leaving the organisation for a range of reasons, such as retirement or relocation, with an opportunity to do so. In all likelihood a number of these applications will be declined due to the present and future needs of the organisation. “We expect this process will result in an approximate reduction of five per cent in staff numbers within Council. Mayor John Brent said following the 2008 amalgamations, the newly formed Scenic Rim Regional Council was categorised as financially weak but, as a result of hard

work and fiscal discipline, Council had turned this around and was now ranked among the most sustainable local government areas in the State. “We remain on a well-documented path to long-term financial sustainability, but that is not to say we need not continue to review our operations and identify areas where we can achieve improved efficiencies and savings,” Cr Brent said. “The community and ratepayers expect Council to deliver value-formoney outcomes and this includes acting in a prudent and proactive manner to manage staff numbers against our financial position and the service levels required to support the region. “The savings created by this restructuring process will be directed to delivering infrastructure projects and community initiatives which respond to the needs of the region.”

From 1st March 2014, Canungra Valley Medical will be a mixed billing practice.
Due to the rising costs of running a medical practice and the Government Rebate remaining the same, bulk billing all patients is no longer viable. Bulk billing will be still be available for patients who are Health Care card and Pension card holders and all children under the age of 16 years.

ANZAC Day Celebrations Continue 100 Years On By Keith Cogzell
It was one hundred years ago this year that young Australians from all walks of life first answered the call of their country to enlist and serve in World War 1. A century on, Australians from all walks of life will gather on Friday April 25th in the cities and towns around the nation to remember and pay their respects to those who served and created the Anzac legend so long ago. For Canungra residents, commemorative services will start in the silence of the early dawn with a stirring Dawn Service in D J Smith Park commencing at 5.30am. Later in the morning, veterans, ex servicemen and women and a contingent of current serving personnel from Kokoda Barracks will lead off the Anzac Day March. It commences at 9.30am from Canungra State School and will travel up Christie Street and into DJ Smith Park. The morning service will immediately follow at the cenotaph with traditional readings and prayers, keynote address, Last Post and the laying of wreaths by community groups and individuals. The morning service will conclude around 10.30am. It was in 1916, the first anniversary of the Gallipoli landing, that Anzac Day gained its official name and the first services were held. Australians gathered then to remember the young men who fought in France and on the Gallipoli Peninsula and established the Anzac name. More importantly, those young men established the

Anzac spirit with its enduring ideals of courage, endurance and mateship . Although a century has passed since the start of the first World War, observance of Anzac Day in the wider community has never been stronger. Last year more than 1,000 people attended the Canungra dawn service and a similar number turned out for the march and memorial service that followed. Canungra has a long history of Anzac Day observance with the Canungra Sub Branch of the RSSAILA formed at the end of the First World War. During that same period, a fund was established to raise public monies to erect a suitable memorial resulting in our historic stone memorial being unveiled on Anzac Day
in 1938, 76 years ago. Today we remember those who bravely served, suffered or made the ultimate sacrifice in all wars in the service of our country. Servicemen, servicewomen and the families of those who served in World War 2, Korea, Malaya, Indonesia, Vietnam, Iraq, Timor and Afghanistan. Following the Dawn Service at around 6.30 am, local residents and visitors are invited to attend the traditional Gunfire Breakfast at the RSL Club. This important fundraising event helps the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch fund the memorial services it conducts on Anzac Day and Remembrance Day. Cost is just $5 per head and the Club is located at 25 Pine Street.

Scrambled Eggs with Smoked Salmon, Asparagus and Goat Cheese Ingredients:
• 1 tbsp butter • 8 stalks asparagus, woody bottoms removed, chopped into 1” pieces • salt and black pepper to taste • 8 eggs • 2 tbsp fat-free milk • 1/4 cup crumbled fresh goat cheese • 4 oz smoked salmon, chopped.
Method:
Heat the butter in a large nonstick skillet or saute pan over medium heat. When the butter begins to foam, add the asparagus and cook until just tender (“crisp-tender” in kitchen parlance). Season with salt and pepper. Crack the eggs into a large bowl and whisk with the milk. Season with a few pinches of salt and pepper and add to the pan with the asparagus. Turn the heat down to low and use a wooden spoon to constantly stir and scrape the eggs until they begin to form soft curds. A minute before they’re done, stir in the goat cheese. Remove from heat when the eggs are still creamy and soft (remember, scrambled eggs are like meat-they continue to cook even after you cut the heat) and fold in the smoked salmon.

Planning Scheme
The three-year process to develop a single planning scheme for Scenic Rim has reached an important milestone with Council endorsing the Strategic Directions Paper which is now out for community consultation. The document details Council’s proposed policy directions in relation to drafting the new scheme. I strongly encourage all residents to view this document either online at www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/have-your-say or to pick up a hard copy at any Customer Service Centre or library. The Planning Scheme Project Team have endeavoured to use simple every day language where possible, being mindful that we are not all qualified planners. They will also be hosting an information sesson at Canungra Library on Wednesday 2nd April from 2pm - 4pm.

The re-establishment of birthing services some weeks ago has been probably the most significant March event for our region and I am pleased to advise that the birthing numbers are increasing and even one caesarean birth has been perfomed. The reintroduction of these services and employment of a diverse skill mix of medical expertise will allow the introduction of so many more services to our community,ones we have lacked for many years. We can expect more news on this in the coming months.

Hoping for good news... The night The Canungra Times went to print last month, I went to the Canungra Show Society’s Annual General Meeting. I walked out of that meeting shaken. I don’t know what I expected, but I didn’t expect the future of our Show Society to be in jeopardy. The result was that there were not enough volunteers to take on committee roles, which meant if a committee couldn’t be formed within 30 days the Show Society may be dissolved. Hopefully many of you have seen the flyers in the paper, posts on facebook and flyers around town asking for people to help with the Show and Rodeo this year. As I send the pages away to the printer today, I am not 100% sure what will happen at the postponed AGM tonight (Wednesday 2nd April), but I am hopeful that people will come. I am hopeful that they will be willing to do the (unpaid) work that will continue the tradition of the Canungra Show - a tradition that has remained alive through a World War, and many great changes within our society. Thank you to everyone who offered their assistance to the Canungra Show Society, every person’s time and effort is appreciated. Let’s hope I see you at the Rodeo and Show later this year.

Over many years, musical luminaries including Michael Fix, Nadia Sunde, Rose Bygrave and Paul Robert Burton have graced the verandah and back yards of The Summit with their great music and this year the MacKinnon family is pleased to introduce the Wendy Murray Trio to the local community. Wendy’s influences are eclectic. She has the ability to adapt her voice to suit the many and varied styles of the songs she loves, whether sultry blues, smooth Latin jazz, quirky cabaret show tunes or beautiful folk and pop melodies, Wendy presents her elegant style with warmth and humour. She is also a vocal coach, songwriter, dancer, guitarist, band manager, beekeeper, gardener and farmer along permaculture principals, yoga practitioner, meditator and nature lover. Wendy loves music and is deeply grateful for the opportunity to practice her art. In 2001 Wendy undertook a trip to Cuba. Under composer, bandleader, bassist Jose Joaquin Alayo Mulen in Santiago de Cuba Wendy studied the wonderful traditional music, songs, dance, Spanish language and Cuban culture. Orchid and Foliage Show
Dear Keer, Once more I write to congratulate your wonderful Canungra Times and the residents of Canungra for supporting our recent Autumn Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants. Again we were able to put on a most successful Show to which over six hundred visitors were attracted. On both Saturday morning and Sunday morning the hall was abuzz with visitors admiring a truly magnificent display of orchids and foliage plants. Unusually, orchid plants dominated which is uncommon at this time of year with 168 orchids being benched as well as only 125 foliage plants. In Autumn, the reverse is generally the case. The weather obviously has played havoc with the growing practices of the plants. For the first time the Mayor, John Brent, was able to attend and he was most impressed with our efforts. Similarly with the judges who ranked our presentation as one of the best five they’d seen this year so far. Our raffle was most successful with winners being:

Party animal Gray King (Simon Pegg) was on top of the world when he graduated from high school back in the 1970s and attempted to drink at twelve pubs in one night - a feat called the Golden Mile - with his four friends. It’s now 2013 and Gary is a recovering drug addict with no purpose in life. Desperate to finish what he started, Gary coaxes his old friends back to their hometown Newton Haven for a second attempt at the Golden Mile. As the five friends make their way from pub to pub, resentment and old grudges flare up and threaten to ruin the night. But before the group can fall apart, they realise a sinister change has come over Newton Haven, and getting out alive might not be as easy as it was the first time.
The World’s End is the third film in Wright’s Cornetto trilogy, coming after Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz and like the first two it is filled with laughs and surprises. However it has a darker feel than either of them and its humour is surprisingly bittersweet in places, although there are still some great jokes. Keep an eye out for the placement of the Cornetto, as it is a great and easily-missed gag. All the actors who play the five friends have an instantly believable chemistry and both Simon Pegg and Nick Frost show their acting chops in the film’s more dramatic moments. The World’s End is well worth checking out on DVD if you, like myself, missed it in cinemas. I hope it’s not the last film that Pegg, Frost and Wright make together.

Kenyan Ranger Fundraiser By Melissa Whitby This month I am writing to inform readers of another wildlife-related issue that is close to my heart and to ask for your help. Worldwide, rangers are risking their lives to protect wildlife with very little resources. Many lose their lives protecting the environment and wildlife. This year I will travel to Kenya, Africa with four colleagues to volunteer with the South Rift Association of Landowners (SORALO) on the Game Scout Project. Our key role will be to provide training to Game Scouts (equivalent to Park rangers), who are responsible for conserving and protecting wildlife and managing humanwildlife conflicts and sustainable farming practices. This training will centre on providing information for basic first aid, compliance, customer service and wildlife survey and monitoring techniques. In addition, we

are fundraising and collecting field supplies to help our Kenyan ranger counterparts. The Game Scouts have few resources to do their vital work. They are in urgent need of field equipment such as Digital cameras, First Aid supplies, GPS and mobile phones, rechargeable batteries and SD cards, waterproof field notebooks and raincoats. The website www.soralo.org provides information on the Game Scouts’ work and the role SORALO has in providing support to local communities and conservation. All monetary donations to the Kenyan Ranger Fundraiser will not be utilised to get my work colleagues or myself to Kenya. Each of us will be paying our own way. All funds raised and equipment received will be given to the Game Scout project at SORALO. Book Now For This Year’s Arts In The Olives Festival
It’s that time of the year again when everyone has the opportunity to decide what exciting workshop to do at this year’s Arts in the Olives Festival on Sunday 11th May. BADCAP (Beaudesert and District Community Arts Projects) in conjunction with the Lost World Valley community are responsible for this festival which is now in its seventh year. Proceeds from the festival continue to help BADCAP organise community arts projects and with another exciting sculpture symposium in the pipeline the committee is planning for this year’s event to be the best ever. Mothers from all over south-east Queensland will be pleased to hear the festival is again being held on Mothers’ Day and what better way to be treated on their special day than to be transported to another world (The Lost World in fact) for an Arts in the Olives experience. “Music, Masks and Masquerade” is what the 2014 festival is all about and this theme is featured in many of the workshops. Arts market, arts demonstrations and a full music programme will run alongside many gourmet food outlets under the cover of the beautifully shady olive trees. A big feature of every Arts in the Olives festival, is the number of arts workshops included in the program. There are half day and full day workshops available and prices start at $30 per half day (plus material costs). Most of the workshops are
on the Sunday but basketry with Therese Flynn-Clarke, blacksmithing with Gilbert Louttit and magical monotypes with Sandra Pearce are on the Saturday as well. The ATO has announced the indexed superannuation contributions caps for the financial year commencing 1st July 2014. The amount of concessional (or ‘before tax’) contributions that may be made by a taxpayer to their superannuation fund has increased from $25,000 to $30,000 for the 2014/2015 year, while the amount of non-concessional (or ‘after’) contributions that may be made has increased from $150,000 to $180,000. Further, the higher concessional contribution cap currently applicable to persons aged 59 and over (being $35,000) will from 1st July 2014 apply to persons aged 19 and over. These changes mean that a person aged under 65 may bring forward the following two financial years’ non-concessional contributions and make total contributions of up to $570,000 in the 2014/2015 year without incurring any excess contributions tax (or $575,000 if the person is aged 49 to 64). The allowable contributions are up to $100,000 greater than what is available in the current financial year. This is good news for owners of commercial property who may be seeking to contribute all or part of their real property holdings (held directly or in a family discretionary trust) into their self-managed superannuation funds as a superannuation contribution. Thank you to everyone who attended and to FoodWorks who provided food for the barbecue.

Parents had the opportunity to visit their children’s classrooms and have a presentation from teachers about classroom rules and regulations and ask questions about homework and lessons. About 175 parents came to the school in the various classrooms. It was also a great opportunity to meet teachers and see where the children spend their learning time.

There was a great response to the Moriarty Park Disco. The students’ behaviour was very good and they all had lots of fun.
Thursday 20th March Somerset Literature Festival
Each year the Year 5 students have the opportunity to attend the Somerset Literature Festival. This is a fantastic chance for students to meet authors and attend sessions given by authors.
Friday 21st March Harmony Day
The school celebrated Harmony Day. Since 1999, community groups such as schools have staged more than 25,000 Harmony Day events. Harmony Day is a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home – from the traditional owners of this land to those who have come from many countries around the world. By participating in Harmony Day activities we can all learn and understand how Australians from diverse backgrounds equally belong to this nation and enrich it. Students celebrated Harmony Day by wearing orange to school and participating in ‘buddy’ activities with other classes. Students then ate their first break food together.

I am typing this article whilst listening to the soothing sound of drenching rain on the roof! What a relief – and a great reminder of how changeable SEQ weather can be. The Green Team Working Bee held on Saturday 8th March was again a resounding success! We had over 50 attendees which is an amazing turnout! The Green Team is incredibly proud of the commitment and passion evident in all of our volunteers – you all consistently make an effort to make a difference! Thank You.

When Too Much Sport is Just Not Enough!
Canungra has a wealth of sporting options for many age gropus and with the recent Scenic Rim Regional Council Be Healthy and Active programs, people have been able to try many more fitness options at very affordable prices. Canungra Golf Club ran a very successful ‘Come and Try’ Day on Sunday 23rd March as part of the Be Healthy and Active program. Children and adults alike took the opportunity to go to the Club and try golf under the guidance of the friendly Club members. Kara of Canungra Yoga has been running beginner yoga classes every Saturday at 10am for only $3 as part of the program. Kara said the classes have been very popular, particularly with people who haven’t tried yoga before. Kara also runs the walking group which leaves at 7.30am every Tuesday from Canungra Yoga’s building at 17 Appel Street. Walks are adjusted to suit the fitness and health levels of the people who attend each morning. For more information about yoga or the walking group, contact Kara on 0421 871 264. “It has been quite social as well,” she said, “Especially for older people who like to come and chat either before or after the class.” Local tennis coach, Brett Day started a social tennis group on Wednesday evenings at 6.30pm at the tennis courts at Moriarty Park. The cost is dependent on numbers but Brett said it is usually $6 which pays for the court hire and lights. Brett has been encouraged by the

number of people who have started coming regularly to the social tennis group. “We cater for anyone who is keen to play,” he said, “I try to match people up with someone else of the same standard so we might have better players on one court and beginners on the other court.” Brett said there is no pressure to attend each week so there is the option of coming along when you can without
worrying about letting other people down. Under the Be Healthy and Active program, Kym Crook has been running a 30 minute high intensity fat burner class every Tuesday at 9am. All classes and events which have been supported under the Be Healthy and Active program will conclude at the end of May, however the walking group and social tennis group will continue indefinitely.

Take time to buy a few tickets in the Easter Raffle and give yourself a chance to win one of the worthwhile prizes. The raffle will be drawn on the day. Tuesday night Bible discussion has started and this provides an opportunity to freely discuss biblical topics with the result of a better understanding of parts of the scripture. We are commencing a monthly Friday night gathering of drinks and nibbles (BYO) from 5.30pm until 7.00pm on the last Friday of each month from Friday 28th March. Last month I mentioned Rev Valerie will be collated as the Area Archdeacon. This role will cover all parishes from Sunnybank in the north to Coolangatta in the south and west to Beaudesert. No doubt Valerie will be kept very busy. On Sunday 13th April a choral Palm Sunday Evensong will take place at St George’s Anglican Church, Dapsang Street on the mountain. Tamborine Mountain Voices group will lead and engage with the congregation. All welcome to attend and light refreshments will be served. FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month
The February Sportsperson of the Month is 12 year old Abbey Thorogood. Abbey swam at the Queensland State Relay Titles, the Queensland State Titles and the Gold Coast Regionals this year. She was also selected to swim at the Districts for Tamborine Mountain State High School Abbey has been a keen swimmer for many years. She was Age Champion for 2012 and 2013 at Canungra Primary School and Age Champion for 2012, 2013 and 2014 at Canungra Social Swimming Club. She was also Senior Champion for Canungra Social Swimming Club in 2012 and 2013. Abbey won the Senior Coaches
award for Canungra Social Swimming Club for 2014. Her achievements are not limited to swimming, however, she competed in the District Shotput in 2012 (with a broken arm) and also in 2013. She also played Goal Keeper for Gold Coast North in 2013. As the February Sportsperson of the Month, Abbey will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. On The Green - Canungra Area Golf Club With Wendy Brown and Kim Sami A fabulous ‘Come and Try’ morning was held at Canungra Area Golf Club on Sunday 23rd March. The golf club, in conjunction with the Scenic Rim’s Be Healthy & Active promotion, gave adults and children an opportunity to come and try golf for free. Over 40 participants came and enjoyed the hospitality and experienced the game of golf. The morning was filled with fun, laughter and loads of giveaways and was finished off with a complimentary sausage sizzle and ice blocks. The Canungra Area Golf club would like to thank the Scenic Rim Regional Council for their support in making this day happen and also thank all of their wonderful members for their assistance in making the day possible. A working bee was held on Sunday 16th March. The main focus was on the new club house where great progress was made despite the hot conditions.

We are off to a ripping start in the competition season with the Women taking Mudgeeraba 3-0 at home in their first game and both the Under 12’s and under 14’s winning convincingly in their first games. Needless to say weather will most likely hinder the early part of the competition but hey, isn’t this rain good to see, and soon we will be raking up the grass at Moriarty Park again (volunteers can sign up now)! Canungra ran their first preseason event for the year, with a 5-side women’s competition on 8th March. Bob Richards had donated some great trophies to the club which prompted David and Bren (to a lesser extent) to throw together a community event with entertainment all day. Local sponsorship and assistance was tremendous and so very much appreciated. Thank you also to Faime Hedges for wonderful face painting and looking fabulous in elaborate Blue Fairy outfit! local talent Chris and Jamie entertaining us with great guitar and vocals was just perfect. I believe all who attended enjoyed the day and whilst we had a few teams pull out at the last minute, having Nerang and Runaway Bay come along and start off what we hope will be an annual big event, was very much appreciated, and we are assured they are keen to come back. Canungra (one of our teams) came up with the goods however and the trophy stays on our pie warmer! We have several new faces helping out with various tasks this year which is great. Chris Jarvis has kindly offered to mark our field lines which takes a lot of pressure off us. We should be shortly in full swing although it has been a bit of a struggle organising teams and coaches this year. Thank you for everyone’s patience ... it is a huge job and Sam Wilson has been unbelievable in orchestrating this process, and juggling all the other things she does. Please watch out for our home games (Wednesday and Friday night games) and come and support our locals and have a curry ! Go the Owls!

Canungra’s Weight Loss And Fitness Challenge Swimming Season Extended By Stephen Crook
If you are looking for a great way to get motivated and lose weight or tone up then come and join our fifth Challenge. You will not only learn how to exercise for weight loss and fitness but also how to maintain a healthy diet and lifestyle to stay healthy all year round.
Winners of previous challenges have lost 17.1kg, 18.4kg, 16.8kg and 11.3kg Previous Challenges have just focused on weight loss but now I have added the Fitness Challenge for those who do not need to lose weight but want to improve fitness and strength. There will be a weigh in for those taking part in the weight loss challenge and then everyone will do a
fitness test which will be redone at the end of the challenge to see who has improved the most. There will be five group classes to attend and many one on one sessions available. All members in the Challenge must attend the initial weigh in where I give a lecture on diet and healthy eating. Diet can be the thing that makes weight loss hard so I will discuss what should and shouldn’t be in your everyday eating plan. The Challenge will start on Thursday 24th April 2014 for the weigh in at 5:30pm at Moriarty Park hall. If you would like to register please call Stephen Crook on 0431 208 588. It only costs $15 to join the challenge, all you have to do is attend one session a week (group or private) to stay in the competition. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions.
Due to anticipated warmer temperatures over the coming weeks, the swimming season at local pools has been extended. The swimming season would normally conclude on 31st March but an extended time table of operating hours has been scheduled for the benefit of patrons. Revised operating hours are as follows:

State Champion Mitchell Achieves His Dream
Last month The Canungra Times ran a story on twelve year old Mitchell McKay who had been selected to compete in the Little Athletics State Titles in Cairns on 21st to 23rd March. The Jimboomba Little Athletics Club Secretary, Peta Smith, had described Mitchell as an exceptional talent and his performance in Cairns proved her right. Mitchell competed in four events and successfully took out the Boys Under 12 400 metres. He placed second in the Boys Under 12 200 metres - the winner, Harris Yell of the Gold Coast, broke the Queensland Under 12 record. Mitchell is a student at Tamborine Mountain College under a Sporting Scholarship. Mitchell and his father, Craig, said they would like to specially thank Tamborine Mountain College Principal June Melbourne and staff for supporting him in his sporting endeavours. “We would also like to thank Michelle Aldridge and the staff at the Canungra Op Shop who sponsored Mitchell’s accommodation in Cairns; Simon
