Moriarty Park was alive with colour on Saturday 21st July as RimFest took over the sports ground. The idea for the event began little over a month ago when Michelle Plant realised the financial impact cancer was having on a close friend. “I saw a window open for some help that was needed – because my friend is so used to giving to people, not receiving herself,” she said. Together with Ingrid Gill, she set
about organising a family fun day with money raised going to two families in the Canungra area affected by cancer. Ingrid and Michelle were overwhelmed by the response. “We would like to thank the remarkable generosity of members of the Canungra and Tamborine communities for their contributions and attendance,” said Michelle. Ingrid said every business she
approached for donations of raffle prizes, entertainment or their time was happy to help. Over $4,500 was raised from raffle ticket sales, a silent auction, entry fees and donations on the day. Michelle and Ingrid are confident they will reach their goal of $5,000 with donations still coming in and two donated autographed football jerseys being sold on ebay. More photos page 16.

EARLY SWITCH TO DIGITAL FOR CANUNGRA
Analogue retransmission sites at Kooralbyn, Canungra, Rathdowney and Mt Alford are expected to be upgraded to digital during September by TX Australia Pty Ltd. This will free up surplus digital-ready equipment owned by Council at these sites to be installed at the region’s fifth self-help location, servicing the Maroon area. The Federal Government’s Digital Switchover Taskforce will be conducting a series of public information workshops in communities serviced by the self-help sites during August to ensure residents in these areas are prepared for upgrade. Two public information workshops will be held at Canungra on Friday 17th August. The first from 2:30pm to 4:30pm and an evening session from 5:30pm to7pm. The sessions will take place at Canungra School of Arts Hall 3-6 Pine Street (Beaudesert - Nerang Road) Canungra. The proposed timetable for switch to digital at the self-help sites is: • Canungra - Wednesday, 5th September • Rathdowney – Wednesday, 12th September • Kooralbyn – Wednesday, 19th September • Mt Alford – Wednesday, 26th September • Maroon – Subject to the completion of upgrades at other sites Residents may experience some reception issues in the lead up to the full switchover as related infrastructure is upgraded.
DVD-quality pictures, CD-quality sound and features such as an Electronic Program Guide and widescreen format. To continue watching free-to-air TV after analogue signals are switched off, households and businesses will need to ensure their TVs can receive digital TV services by either: • Connecting a set-top box or digital TV recorder to their existing analogue TV, or • Upgrading to a digital TV with a built-in digital tuner. It may be necessary to re-tune your existing digital television to access the new service. The Government’s Household Assistance Scheme provides free practical assistance to switch to digital TV. To be eligible for the Scheme people must have a working television, be unable to reliably receive the full range of digital TV channels, and receive the maximum rate of the Age Pension, Disability Support Pension, Carer Payment or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs Service Pension or Income Support Supplement payment. The Scheme opened in the early switchover areas on 9th July 2012. For more information call the Department of Human Services on 1800 556 443. To find out more about how to get ready for digital television visit www.digitalready.gov.au or call the toll free Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13.
Canungra residents will switch to digital on Wednesday 5th September
To find out more about the switch to digital and to ensure you’re prepared visit www.digitalready.gov.au The upgrades mean these areas will switch from analogue to digital-only free-to-air TV earlier than the 28th May 2013 switchover date announced last week by the Minister for Broadband, Communications and the Digital Economy, Senator Stephen Conroy. Early switchovers happen when broadcasters switch off analogue TV signals on the same day that digital TV signals are switched on. This is because the towers being upgraded are unable to broadcast analogue and digital TV services at the same time. After the early switchovers, people will be able to access all sixteen free-to-air digital channels for the first time. Digital TV also provides

Golden Award for El
By Chloe Pickard Local natural light photographer, El Hogan, won a Gold Award and Merit in 2012’s Australian Professional Photography Awards. After winning a Silver Award in 2011, El entered two photographs in the annual competition despite not quite knowing what to enter. The APPA awards receive entries from Australian and New Zealand professional photographers. Entries are judged by panels of fellow photographers, with over 3200 images being judged this year from 25th to 27th May at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. El said that she has always been interested in photography after growing up in an artistic household, but did not initially believe she could make a living from it. When her
children were born, she changed her mind and has now run her business for three years. Her inspirations are “Mainly my own kids, friends, travelling, discovering new music, other photographers, light and sun,” she said. She most enjoys photographing families and children. “My photographs are fun, relaxed, full of laughter, love, light and personality,” she writes on her blog. Her advice to anyone wishing to become a professional photographer is to educate themselves about the business aspects, promote in an appropriate way and to see things differently. Her winning photographs can be seen on the APPA website www.appa. aippblog.com and El’s website elhoganphotography.com.au/blog/.
Pregnant Pause A six-year old boy kept telling his teacher about the baby brother or sister that was expected at his house. One day the mother allowed the boy to feel the movements of the unborn child. The six-year old made no comment. Furthermore, he stopped telling his teacher about the impending event. Weeks later the teacher asked, “Tommy, whatever has become of that baby brother or sister you were expecting at home?” Tommy burst into tears and confessed, “I think Mummy ate it!”

Canungra’s History
Canungra Show This year, the Canungra A H & I Society will hold the 74th Canungra Show. First run in 1938, the Show is run and organised entirely by volunteers which in itself is an amazing achievement. This small but dedicated band of volunteers work throughout the year to put together one day of entertainment for the community. In the early years, the Cattle Sections were well contested, however the main focus was on dairy cattle. The Stud Beef Cattle Section was introduced in 1982, abandoned in 1997, but reintroduced for the 60th Anniversary of the Show in 1998. It remains a competitive Section to this day. The Horse Sections have increased considerably with the growth of the Shire as an equine recreational hub. From miniatures to thoroughbreds, the Horse Sections are always popular and draw both local competitors and those from around South-East Queensland. In 2008, the Draught Horse and Plough Horse Categories have been phased out, replaced by a Heavy Horse Category but a myriad of breed classes have been
introduced over the years including Appaloosas, Arabians and Australian Stock Horses. Of course the Photography, Produce, Cookery, Art and Crafts displayed in the Fine Arts Pavilion remain a focal point of the Show. Competitors take great pride in their creations and these Sections are always well represented by the locals, giving people the opportunity to showcase talents which might otherwise be hidden at home! One Section which caused a great deal of angst over the years was the Dogs and Pet Parade. In 1938, the Dog Section included fox terriers, greyhounds, Pomeranians, cattle dogs and kelpies and this Section continued to run until 1952. After this time, the only dogs to be shown were in the Pet Parade, which had to be discontinued as uncontrolled dogs caused havoc around the grounds during the day! The 74th Canungra Show will be held at Canungra Showgrounds, Coburg Road, Canungra on Saturday 25th August. Gates open 10am. For more information visit www. canungrashowsociety.org

Massage Therapist Jane Evans with Kym and Steve Crook
Jane Joins Canungra Beauty
Massage Therapist, Jane Evans, has joined Kym and Stephen Crook at Canungra Beauty. Jane is experienced in Remedial, Deep Tissue and Swedish Massage and has been working as a massage therapist for the past eight years. She moved to Canungra earlier this year and said she is enjoying the country lifestyle and is looking forward to working with Kym and Stephen. Jane worked on Hamilton Island for a time, where her clients included singer Shannon Knoll and footballer Brendan Fevola. “It was a bit embarrassing,” said Jane, “I had no idea who Brendan Fevola was. I was just asking what he did and he said he played a lot of football. It wasn’t until afterwards when people I worked with were saying ‘that was Brendan Fevola’ that I realised he was famous.” Despite her lack of knowledge of the footballer’s identity, or perhaps because of it, Brendan did return as a client. Jane is available for massage therapy at Canungra Beauty. For bookings phone 5543 5060.
Queensland Country Women’s Association of Australia members gathered from across the Gold Coast region for the Wonglepong branch’s 87th annual meeting on Saturday 21st July. Visitors from the Beenleigh, Coomera, Eagleby, Mermaid Beach, Springbrook CWA branches came to honour the Wonglepong branch’s efforts. Third time elected President Gai Johnston thanked everyone in attendance for their time and her executives for their hard work. “Throughout the year our members have worked a total of 4794 voluntary hours,” she said. Division 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carroll was honorary Chairman and Division 3 Councillor Virigina West thanked the branch for its support of the community. “It’s very admirable to see with your generosity that you cater to all the community, not just women but men, children and families,” she said.

‘Problem Learners’ Suffer Poor Vision
Sixty per cent of children who are ‘problem learners’ have been found to suffer from undetected vision problems, warns North Tamborine optometrist Nicky Carr, who is encouraging parents to have their children’s eyes tested as part of Children’s Vision Day 2012. A review undertaken as part of the National Children’s Vision Screening Project reported most children with academic or behavioural problems fail one or more visual tests. According to Nicky, “Vision plays a significant part in the learning process for a child and there’s a definite link between vision impairment and educational outcomes. We all rely on good vision to see clearly and sharply. Vision problems make learning difficult and prevent children from achieving their full potential.” “Parents and teachers should watch for signs that a child may have a vision problem, including avoidance of reading and writing, lower comprehension and short attention span. These are sometimes incorrectly suspected as the outcomes of learning disabilities such as dyslexia or attention deficits,” said Nicky. “Most importantly, the common vision problems among school-aged children can with early detection be easily managed or corrected by an optometrist.”
Tamborine Mountain Optometrists is participating in Children’s Vision Day on 15 August 2012, which aims to raise awareness about the importance of looking after the health of children’s eyes throughout their schooling. Optometrists Association Australia recommends that children have a full eye examination with an optometrist before starting school and regularly thereafter. Eye examinations attract a Medicare rebate and no referral is required. For information on Children’s Vision Day visit www.optometrists.asn.au/childrensvision or contact Tamborine Mountain Optometrists on 5545 0277 or tamborinemountainoptometrists.com.

Canungra RSL Services Club is the place to be if you like singing or playing an acoustic instrument. The first acoustic Jam Night at the RSL was held on Friday 6th July with a few guitar players coming along to play some of their favourite songs, and a few more ‘having a look’ before bringing instruments next time. Most of the songs played on the night were simple, well-known songs, from Pink Floyd’s Wish You Were Here to Bruno Mars’ Lazy Song. Jam Night is the first Friday of each month from 6.30pm. All levels are welcome - it is a great opportunity for beginners to play with other people and to learn from each other. The advice for those too nervous to play? Bring your guitar, leave it in the car and come along for a look - you can always get it out if you feel game! To ensure the comfort of other patrons, Jam Night is for acoustic instruments only. For more information call 0407 671 286 or come along on the night.

Sam’s Yoga Classes in Good Hands
Sam Lindsay-German has only been in Canungra for two years, but she made a big impact on the community during that time. Last year, Sam served as President of the Canungra Community Kindergarten and also introduced yoga to the students at Canungra State School. Sam and her family are moving on due to work commitments, however she has been fortunate to find another Yoga Instructor to take her classes. Cheryl Fraser has lived in Canungra most of her life, but has spent most of her working life running businesses in Brisbane - with the exception of the Canungra Newsagency which her family owned when her children were young. She and Sam met while studying for their Kundalini Yoga instructor’s qualifications and were surprised to find they both lived in Canungra. Cheryl has been practicing Kundalini Yoga for the past four years and other forms of Yoga for many years before. She says she welcomed the opportunity to teach Kundalini yoga. “It is different to other forms of Yoga in that it is very specific in the benefits and areas you concentrate on. Kundalini Yoga works on the lymphatics and the nervous system using sets of movements and chanting,” said Cheryl. The folllowing quote from Maya Fiennes’ book Yoga for Real Life,

encapsulates the benefits of Kundalini Yoga: ‘Do you long for more time in your day, to do things without rushing? Or for a better, deeper relationship with your partner, your family, your friends (yourself)? Would you like to look and feel younger, more vibrant and alive? I believe that Kundalini Yoga can do all of this for you and more. It is something you can introduce easily into a busy life, and it will give you more energy, more creativity, more fun and real peace. What’s more, you’ll start to feel its benefits almost immediately. It has changed my life immeasurably for the better, and I know it can change yours. For me, it is the secret of true joy.’ To find out more about Kundalini Yoga and Cheryl’s classes, please call Cheryl on 0430 177 013 or email c.fraser@skymesh. com.au.

Canungra District Not Forgotten in Budget Division Three Councillor, Virginia West, said Canungra has done well out of the Scenic Rim’s 2012/13 budget. “There are several projects in Canungra that received funding,” said Virginia, “I am pleased that Canungra has done as well as it has. We aimed to put forward a responsible budget for the entire Scenic Rim and I think we have managed to do that.” Funding for Canungra district included: • Canungra Pool’s concourse concrete being resurfaced - $60,000. • Repair balance tank lid at Canungra Pool - $15,000. • Lions Park’s walking track upgrade - $25,000. • New picnic shelter at James Sharp Memorial park. • A white-ant ridden picnic table in D J Smith Park will be replaced. • Funding for Christmas lights in D J Smith Park during December. • Continuation of the free buses to Gold Coast, Logan and Ipswich. • Duck Creek Road Capital Works - $380,000 allocated (in association with NDRRA works). In addition, community groups are able to apply for funding through Council’s grants programs. Every year, an average of 200 community groups receive financial and in-kind contributions through the Community Grants program. Mayor John Brent said the work of local not-for-profit groups was invaluable to the community. “It is important for Council to support these community groups for their tremendous contribution to our region and its residents,” he said.

Council Delivers 2012/13 Budget At a special meeting on 13th June, the new Scenic Rim Council voted unanimously to adopt the 97.1 million dollar 2012/2013 budget. Rate payers will see an average rise of 4.5 per cent, 1.7 per cent of this being due to the carbon tax. Council does not receive carbon tax compensation like households. Mayor John Brent said that he was proud of his fifth budget as Mayor and that many hard decisions had been made to prioritise essential developments over highly desirable ones. “The budget includes future planning and employment growth,” he said. The road network and bridge works program has been allocated $19.3 million, with old wooden bridges such as Bruxner being replaced around the Scenic Rim and roads such as Tarome Road being upgraded. $3.5 million will be spent on replacing bridges. District 3 Councillor and Deputy Mayor, Virginia West, said that the council had an obligation to protect their assets. “All councillors were very mindful of the economic pressures experienced by households and businesses when formatting the budget. Council is obliged to manage and maintain assets such as roads, bridges and other infrastructure.” she said. Flood recovery work to the value of

$25 million is expected to be completed in 2012/2013 with the focus being reconstruction and more flood-resilient infrastructure. At the meeting, Councillor Nigel Waistall raised concerns about drainage being left out of the budget. “In some parts of the Scenic Rim, and Tamborine Mountain is no exception, drainage and foot paths are the two most important assets,” he said. Three areas on Tamborine Mountain have been selected as part of a stormwater management program. Funding for grants continues with the community grants program, RADF, environmental and sporting grants allocated funds. This includes: $175,000 for Community Grants Program. • $77,000 for environmental grants. • $70,000 for RADF (Arts Queensland having contributed $43,333). • $50 000 will be given as part of council’s new Sporting Grants Program for clubs to buy sporting equipment. Council libraries have been allocated $60,000 to establish e-book collections and access to the Project Gutenberg e-book collection. Making 2012 Your Best Year Yet!
By Adele Spurgin
So often I hear from people amazing stories of what it is that they want to have in life, their private dreams, goals and aspirations. It is truly amazing what happens when we allow ourselves and our thoughts the freedom to think beyond any self imposed barrier. This - have - is a fundamental ingredient in the “have, be, do” model of thought. As always starting with the end in mind, state what it is you want to have, your deepest most amazing desire. Step two, is sometimes the stumbling block. The “be” part. Who do I need to be in order to get what I want to have. What do my beliefs need to be? What do I need to believe of myself and perhaps which beliefs do I need to get rid of in order to serve me in the attainment of my goals. Step 3, the do! Gen x is notorious for their “doing”, actually too much do-ing and too little being. A balance in all three gives the desired outcome, so next time you start with a project you desire. Aim for what you want to have, ask who do I need to be? and lastly what do I need to do to achieve this? Confucious said, man who wants to move mountain, must start by taking two stones! Start picking up I say! Correction In the July edition of The Canungra Times, it was reported that Allan Ford received his National Medal for service in the Rural Fire Brigade. This was incorrect. Allan served in the Auxilliary Fire Brigade.

WEEK
Eat Local Week, held from 24th June to 1st July, had another successful year, with many events and activities achieving record attendance. Beechmont’s Zest Fest set the pace for the week on the first Saturday, doubling its crowd numbers from last year. Approximately 400 people enjoyed live music, storytelling, sustainable living, gardening workshops, local food, art and craft. Other popular activities included the

Towri Sheep Cheeses tours, the Kalfresh Carrot Field Day and the Dennis family’s ‘Robotic Dairy’, all drawing visitors from as far as Brisbane and the Gold Coast. The Canungra Producers’ Dinner, Boonah Dines Out! and FEAST dinners were all sell-out events. Around 220 people attended the FEAST celebration at Aratula, held to acknowledge the hard work and determination of the region’s farming community.

From My Window...
Ok, there are three questions I’ve been asked about a million times in the last few months: • Where have all the jokes gone? • What have you done with the lolcats? • Don’t you have a sense of humour? Well, no one has actually asked that last one out loud, but I know you’re thinking it. I admit it - the jokes and lolcats have gradually faded out of The Canungra Times over the last few months. In trying to include as much local news as possible I have run short of space every month for the last six months. So the lolcats got the chop. Laughter is important. We all need it, every day, a few times a day if possible - like food really. So, I’m aiming to bring back the jokes, and the lolcats, and make space in The Canungra Times once again for all things funny, absurd, odd and unique. If you read something that tickles your funny bone, email it to office@canungratimes.com.au, post it on our facebook page or drop it in to the office. Just remember, it does need to be suitable for all ages - we’re not going brown paper wrapping no matter how funny it is. In the meantime, if you hear raucous laughter coming from the Canungra Times office, you’ll know I’m searching the internet for jokes! Have a great month and remember: “Laugh at yourself first, before anyone else can.” Elsa Maxwell

DEADLINE The deadline for articles and advertising for the September edition of The Canungra Times is 12 noon on Saturday 25th August. The September edition will be distributed on Friday 7th September.
Vintage High Tea at Olive Farm
Oliva di Tabrabalba will host a Vintage High Tea on Saturday 11th August at the property on Biddaddaba Creek Road, Biddaddaba. Owner Anita Bunch said they are planning an old fashioned Vintage High Tea with homemade lemonade and everything they would have had at a tea party in a bygone era. The event is being held to raise money for a close friend of Anita’s who is battling breast cancer. Silke is on her own with two little boys. She is struggling with her illness and treatment as well as the financial cost of day to day living. “As a community we have come together from Tamborine Mountain and Canungra and have decided to hold a Vintage High Tea at the Olive Farm,” said Anita, “This is solely to raise financial support for Silke as she has been and will continue to be without any income for sometime as she goes through chemotherapy.” Oliva di Tabragalba is the perfect place for a High Tea and Anita has been fortunate enough to have wedding planners Supplize
Decor Hire volunteer their services to decorate the venue on the day. “We are also planning to line the olive trees on the driveway with pink sashes so the whole thing should be really beautiful,” she said. A charity auction will feature on the day. Items to be auctioned include: • Canvas painting of Paris and the Eiffel tower donated by Emma and Jason Treasure; • French provincial furniture (mirror, seat and vanity table) also donated by Emma and Jason Treasure; • Pearl and Swarovski crystal necklace donated by Belle Bijou. Any businesses who would like to donate items for the auction can contact Mandi on 0420 978 096. The Vintage High Tea will be held from 1pm to 4pm on Saturday 11th August at Oliva Di Tabragalba, 169 Biddaddaba Creek Road Biddaddaba. Tickets are available from Barewood Gallery, Canungra, and the Last Tango, Tamborine Mountain.
Council has granted a 10-year extension to the Tamborine Pony Club’s lease at Middle Park and will also lease the former Beechmont rural fire brigade shed and grounds to a local Landcare group. The Tamborine Pony Club has an existing lease at Middle Park until 2014, but sought an extension to cater for expected growth and to maximise the possibility of securing grants and funding. “The club has operated the facility effectively and has demonstrated a commitment to ensure community access to the facility through other equestrian groups as well as informal community activities,” Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Nigel Waistell said.
Beechmont District Landcare Association will move into the former rural fire brigade shed and grounds on Beechmont Rd, with Council granting the group a fiveyear lease. The rural fire brigade located to an adjacent site in 2007 and the old shed has been used for storage purposes. “Since 1992, Beechmont Landcare has worked to improve the environment of the district through education and community projects,” Cr Waistell said. “Given this level of commitment to the local community it is appropriate that Council provides this support to the organisation.”

Council Comment
By Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council Deputy Mayor and Councillor, Division Three
2012/2013 BUDGET Council have approved this year’s budget, again focussing on long term financial sustainability to continue to build a strong future for our residents in Scenic Rim but at the same time continuing to fund our infrastructure assets and services to the community. It has been challenging to say the least, and council has been extremely mindful of the economic pressures experienced by all sections of the community, business and Council itself. Some key points: • $19.3 million to roads and bridges throughout the Scenic Rim, showing a continued commitment to our vital infrastructure. • Funding to commence work on a singular Scenic Rim Planning Scheme. • $70,000 to continue the free monthly bus service to the Gold Coast. • $60,000 investment to update library collections of both books and E-Readers. • Continued funding for Community Grants, Envirionmental Grants and RADF grants. • $50,000 to support sporting groups with capital expenditure to facilities. There is certainly a focus on delivering services and infrastructure to cater for a growing community. Specific funding for Canungra includes $75,000 for upgrades at Canungra Pool, funding to upgrade picnic shelters at D J Smith Park and James Sharp Memorial Park, funds to fix damage to the path from Lions Park to Riverbend Estate and funds to replace the lights on the pine tree in D J Smith Park. Further Budget information is available on Council’s website: www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au or you are welcome to contact me to discuss further. Canungra Sewage Treatment Plant I know this is not something we all get excited about but it is a tribute to QUU (Queensland Urban Utilities), that they recently won an environmental excellence award at the 2012 Healthy Waterways Awards for the upgrade to the Canungra Treatment Plant. This means the water quality discharging into the Canungra Creek now has minimal environmental effect. Environmental Grants And Radf Grants Open The 2012/2013 round of Environmental grants is now open for residents and community groups to assist in environmental stewardship on both private and public land. Applications close on 24th August. The second round of RADF grants close on 17th September and details are available on Council’s website. RimFest What a wonderful initiative formulated by local mothers Michelle and Ingrid which then grew to a significant event thanks to the incredible generosity of local residents and businesses, all to assist some local families with loved ones affected by cancer. We do live in an amazingly caring community for which we need to be very proud . This is very much the country small town feeling that residents tell us they came to the area to be part of. Contact Me I am always available on mobile 0407 630 052 or 5540 5403 or email virginia.w@ scenicrim.qld.gov.au.

The Canungra Times Crossword
Your Stars - August 2012
By Phil Keeble - Answers page 30
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
Mars goes into Scorpio. Life intensifies. Feelings are a little more difficult to penetrate. Defences are a little more sharp and protective. Also, breakthroughs are more astonishing and magical. Though tricky to navigate, the payoff from emotional honesty is significant.
1
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
The only way you are going to find the roar of your power is to be completely undivided within. This is quite a task. You aren’t going to get there by thinking about it, even craftily. You are going to get there by being fully present in your heart. Align action and soul.
CANCER (June 22 – Jul 22)
When you are true to yourself, everything goes swimmingly. The moment you think you have to be somebody else, you become a stranger in a strange land and lose all your power. It’s not heretical to be as you are. There is such a thing as a maverick crab. Be one.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Mercury wanders around a bit but stays in Leo. The Virgin must find her growl. The time has come to tap into the pulse of your inner banshee. In other words, it wouldn’t do any harm whatsoever, to make a bit of noise. If you sense danger, injustice or mediocrity, roar!
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
It’s busy in the constellation of the Scales. Mars crosses in front of Saturn. Courage confronts all that would like to restrict and constrain it. He comes through with flying colours, even if a little frayed around the edges. Conquer something that has been dogging you.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Mars arrives in the latter parts of the month. His arrival adds fire to all the contemplating you have been doing. This means that you are likely to come tearing out of your hideaway and step into the fray. When you move, you do move. Many will be taken by surprise.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Sign off on something that you have been working on. Or sign on to something you have been considering for an eternity. The time is here to open one door as you close another. You have a good handle on how to flourish by now. Stay playful and you’ll do well.
11
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Uranus appears to be going backwards. In so doing he is inviting you to consider whether all the reactivity you have been feeling might actually have its source inside you, rather than in the behaviour of others. There is great dignity in owning up to being a big galoot.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
How deep is the ocean? Your guess is as good as another’s. There really is only one way to find out. Go swimming. Relationship is your mountain stream, your rolling river, or coral sea. Find that special part of the one you love that is fond of immersing itself in bliss. © M.J.Dean 2012

You can attend as many one on one

By Stephen Crook sessions as you like throughout the week or form your own group session times with others if the above do not suit. All members in the challenge must attend the initial weigh in where we will take weights and measurements and I will give a lecture on diet and healthy eating to help you through the challenge. Diet can be the one thing that makes weight loss hard so I will be discussing what should and shouldn’t be in your everyday eating plan. The Challenge will start on 24th August 2012. If you would like to register please call Stephen Crook on 0431 208 588. There is no cost to join the challenge, all you have to do is attend one session a week (group or private) to stay in the competition. Please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions.
By Chloe Pickard This is a darker take on the story than this year’s previous version Mirror Mirror, but truer in tone to the original fairy tale. The evil queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) has taken over the land and holds her step-daughter and true heir to the throne Snow White (Kristen Stewart) captive. When Snow White escapes, the queen summons the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) to find her. Snow White and The Huntsman will appeal to fantasy fans of both genders. While the plot was fairly standard, I still enjoyed the film and the world it created. I loved the special effects used for the queen’s magic mirror and that she got her own backstory rather than being just another two-dimensional villain. Performances were generally good, but I wish Kristen Stewart had showed a little more expressive range. Florence and the Machine’s ‘Breath of Life’ is worth staying around for at the ending credits.

Legal Talk Understanding
Legal Profession By Suzanne Roberts Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers the
What does a solicitor do? A solicitor is the first ‘port of call’ for those seeking legal advice or assistance. Although most people turn to a solicitor if they have a legal problem, there are many other areas of life where solicitors are able to offer legal advice and guidance. When should I see a solicitor? This is a common question. Below are some general rules of thumb, but please be aware there are many other situations that may call for legal advice: • Preparing or before signing a legal document e.g. a contract; • Preparing a will; • Buying or selling a home; • Setting up or changing your business; • Negotiating financial changes e.g. increase or decrease in wealth; • Changing insurance; • Experiencing domestic change; • When liable for, or the potential recipient of, compensation; • If you believe a good or service breaches the law. Solicitors also provide an alternative method of dispute resolution to avoid going to court. What are the costs likely to be? Most solicitors charge on an hourly basis, however, some solicitors offer retainers (fixed fees) for specific legal services. Costs depend on a number of factors – the level of experience of your solicitor; the size of the firm; the geographic location and the type of work.
Page 22
The Canungra Times, August 2012
What if I am unhappy with the costs? The Legal Profession Act 2007, requires all legal firms to disclose the client’s rights with every invoice. You can request an itemized bill that lists each item of work and the amount charged for. There are time limits to challenge a legal bill, so it is essential to speak to your solicitor as soon as possible if you have an issue. If you have a complaint regarding legal services provided, please contact the Legal Services Commission on 1300 655754 or lsc.qld.gov.au Disclaimer: This article is intended for general information only and no person should rely on its contents. Nature’s Gems Osprey (Pandion
haliaetus)
By Melissa Whitby
One of the most beautiful birds of coastal Australia is the majestic Osprey. I am positive that many Australians would have admired this impressive bird of prey and wondered what it was called. The Osprey is best recognized by its brown wings, white head/body and the dark brown streak through its yellow eyes. In the field, this bird can be mistaken for the White-breasted Sea Eagle or Brahminy Kite. White-breasted Sea Eagles differ from Osprey by being a larger bird and having a completely white head. The Brahminy Kite is a bird that has a completely white head and rufous-brown wings which differs to the Osprey which has brown wings. Ospreys are incredible birds to observe in flight and are often seen patrolling coastal beaches. Generally, these birds can be seen singly or in pairs. When not patrolling, these birds will readily perch on man-made structures such as masts, ocean depth markers and communication towers. Ospreys will readily catch fish feet first and then carry the fish to a suitable place to feed unmolested. These birds can be seen in a variety of habitats including bays, coasts, inlets, islands, reefs, coral atolls and water bodies that are situated inland not far from the ocean. This beautiful bird is notorious for placing its nest on made-made structures such power lines and communication towers. In northern Australia, Osprey breed from April to July and in southern Australia, the breeding season is from July-September. The nest is placed high and is made of sticks, rope, seaweed and other material that the birds may find. Osprey have an extensive coastal range throughout the Australian continent. However, their numbers have reduced in coastal areas in some southern states such as Victoria and New South Wales. The Osprey may also be observed in other areas of the world such as America, Africa and Asia. For anyone interested in viewing this bird, I would suggest spending time in your local coastal areas. I can be fairly confident in saying that this is one bird of prey that is not hard to observe and one can spend many hours watching them patrol over the ocean!
AWL Pets of the Month
Tabby (7963): Tabby has had a bit of a raw deal, earlier this year her lovely owner passed away so she ended up at the AWL where she is much loved by the staff and volunteers. An independent cat, 10 year old Tabby is happy to laze around with you or go and sleep in a nice cozy sundrenched spot. A quiet home with no children would be puurr-fect! Tabby is $70 and is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated. Alisa (8232): Alisa is Cattledog-Kelpie cross with a loving and very willing nature. She learns quickly and loves big dinners; chasing the frisbee, sticks and balls; and being under water. Alisa has boundless endless energy so needs a home where she will get lots of exercise. She loves to play with other dogs and has learnt many commands such as sit, weave through legs and spin. Alisa has been in the shelter for over three months and dreams of a place to call home. She is $240 and is desexed, microchipped, vaccinated, wormed and flea-treated. If you would like to meet Tabby or Alisa, contact the Gold Coast Rehoming Centre on 07 5509 9000 to see if they are still available, or visit the AWL QLD website: www.awlqld.com.au for more information.

Canungra Owls Soccer News
By David Baker Any women interested in playing the 2013 season please call Bren on 0414 435 919 to register your interest as the club has secured the services of a coach and do not want to repeat this season’s non fielding of a women’s team. Sana Henderson is doing a great job with the Under 6 team and she reports, “U6’s have gone well this year considering they only have just enough players. The boys went from being worn out in 10 minutes to being able to last the full two halves even though we still look enviously at other teams who often have a full team of subs.” “Aidan, Quinn, Nathan and Heath’s skills have really come a long way from the start of the season and even though we don’t keep score, the boys have all kicked some great goals and managed quite a few wins,” she said. Alice Dykes, ably assisted by her husband, Matthew, said, “The Under 7s are a mix of boys and girls this year and have welcomed three new players to their side. Our year has been progressing well with improvements all round amongst our players. Great work U7s. Go Canungra Owls!” The Under 8’s competed in their first football carnival on 22nd July at Surfers Paradise Apollo Club and finished the day in third position out of their group of six. This was a great effort with two wins, two losses and a draw and with a little bit more polish could easily have finished with four wins. At the end of the day there were a lot of tired boys and equally tired parents. Carnivals like these give the players a great football experience and there was enthusiasm to attend another before season end. The Under 9s coached by Glenn Googe and professionally managed by Kellie Linnehan are having a good time and enjoying their footy. Many thanks to Brian Harrison who took on the under 10s this year. Even though they compete in a lot of games with no reserves they fight out every game and have come away with some stirring victories. Well done Brian, Danelle and the team. Lana Rankin, the manager of the Under 11 team, remarked that the heartening thing about the season is how well the players new to the game have performed. It is not easy being thrust into an age group with players who have known the game for many years. Even though the team will miss the Spurgin boys who are off to Africa, I’m sure they can finish the season off with a flurry. The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to raffle meat trays every second Sunday afternoon, which allows fees to be kept to a reasonable level. Anyone interested in helping out in this regard please ring Bren on 0414 435 919. It only takes an hour or two! Go the Owls!
