Goat Track Open Ahead of Schedule! Canungra businesses and residents are celebrating the reopening of Tamborine Mountain Road (known as the ‘Goat Track’ by locals) ahead of schedule. The road opened on Tuesday 9th July, almost six months after it closed on Australia Day weekend this year when a landslip made it impassable. During the closure some Canungra businesses reported a downturn of up to 30 per cent. Greg Henry of Blackbird Country Pies said the effect of the road reopening was immediate. “The afternoon it opened we had people coming down from the Mountain who we haven’t seen for six months,” he said. Canungra teacher, Sarah Hughes, who lives on Tamborine Mountain, said the reopening has decreased her travelling time from 35 minutes to 18 minutes each way. What’s On Tamborine, feature, page 15

QFS Fire Presentation By Alanna Phillips The Queensland Fire Service will conduct a community education presentation at Gardeners Park in Boike Road, Canungra on Saturday 10th August at 11.00am. The presentation will take around 40 minutes and will be followed by a barbecue. With fuel loads in the Canungra area reaching into the extremely high range, it is prudent that community residents prepare themselves for emergency bush fire situations. The Rural Fire Service volunteers will be conducting training and hazard reduction burns at Kokoda Barracks Military Camp prior to the bush fire season which kicks off toward the end of August. All Canungra residents are welcome to come along and listen to the presentation. For more information please contact Alanna Phillips on 0409 752 997.
The Australian and New Zealand contingent at the 17th Ippy awards in New York. Local author Mary Groves is second from the left.
Local Author Success in US
Best selling author, Mary Groves, recently returned from the United States of America where she spent six weeks promoting her novel, An Outback Life. “The damper and billy tea went down really well at my last signing, although it was nigh impossible to find a billycan in the whole of Jacksonville!” said Mary. The Americans seemed to have trouble with the concept of billy tea, but Mary introduced them to the Aussie tradition. “The idea of putting it on a campfire in the backyard was awkwardly accepted. Finally, although much different from their
usual iced tea, the guests concluded that it was an enjoyable experience and that it could probably start a new trend,” she said. On 31st May, while she was in New York, Mary was presented with a silver IPPY Award for Excellence in Independant Publishing in the Best Regional NonFiction (Australia/New Zealand) category. An Outback Life is the story of Mary’s life in the top end of Australia where she lived and worked for 40 years. It is available on-line and published in Australia by Allen and Unwin.

Libraries Embrace Technology
Scenic Rim library members can now browse and borrow bestsellers anytime, anywhere, thanks to a new digital lending service. BorrowBox is an online application that enables users to borrow, download and enjoy eBooks and eAudiobooks from their local library. The application incorporates a dedicated eBook reader and eAudiobook player, allowing users to read or listen to their favourite titles wherever they go. Library members can use the service online or download the free BorrowBox mobile application available on Apple iOS and Google Android devices. “Our local libraries are important community information hubs that are constantly evolving to meet the changing needs and expectations of today’s tech-savvy library user,” Mayor John Brent said. “We have almost 17,500 library members here in the Scenic Rim, many of whom will benefit from the whole new level of accessibility and freedom this technology provides. “BorrowBox is the latest addition to the libraries’ collection of online e-resources available to members.” Other online library resources include digital magazines, language courses and adult education. Council, in partnership with the State Government, will invest $225,000 in the renewal of print and electronic library resources over the coming year. This forms part of a $1.58 million total investment in the provision of library services throughout the region over the next 12 months. For further information on BorrowBox or other online library e-resources, contact your local library or visit www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/libraries.

$10 Return Fare to Gold Coast
Scenic Rim Transport has announced a return bus fare of $10 to the Gold Coast commenced in July and will remain in place until late January 2014. This follows an 18-month trial which provided free buses within the region on the third Saturday of each month and every Thursday during school holidays. The creation of Scenic Rim Transport was an initiative of the Scenic Rim Social Plan Steering Committee in response to requests from all sectors of the community to improve transport options. Committee chairman, John Bartlett OAM, said the social plan identified a lack of available transport to enable residents, in particular teenagers, seniors and young families, to access entertainment venues and other services. “The first thing we needed to do was assess the level of demand, so we decided to trial a range of free transport services including a bus from Beaudesert to the Gold Coast via Canungra,” Mr Bartlett said. “After monitoring passenger numbers for the past 18 months we are reasonably confident there should be sufficient demand to provide a subsidised service to the Gold Coast. “Obviously a free service could not operate indefinitely, and a return fare of $10 with a maximum of $20 for a family is great value.” Phone the Beaudesert transport co-ordinator on 5541 4176 for bookings or for more information visit the website www scenicrimtransport.com.

In Brief...
Have Your Say On Heritage Sites Council is inviting the community to contribute to the development of a Local Heritage Register for the Scenic Rim to help conserve places of historical and cultural significance for future generations. “The Scenic Rim has a rich and diverse history which reflects a strong connection to the land from our pioneering past through to the present day,” Mayor John Brent said. “The conservation of places of historical and cultural significance throughout the Scenic Rim will ensure important physical connections to our past are preserved for future generations to enjoy.” Local Heritage Register submissions close on Friday, 23rd August, 2013 and will be reviewed by Council prior to further community consultation on nominated places. To find out more about the Local Heritage Register, including the definition of a local heritage place, criteria for determining heritage significance and frequently asked questions, visit the Have Your Say section of Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/have-your-say. Be ‘Magpie-Smart’ During Breeding Season Magpies will soon be patrolling their territory but a few simple actions could help people avoid or minimise the chances of injury from aggressive birds. Environment and Heritage Protection Department Wildlife Management Director Rebecca Williams said it was important to be ‘magpie-smart’ during the breeding season. “Not all magpies swoop but when they do it can be frightening if you’re not prepared,” Ms Williams said. “The behaviour peaks from August to October but can occur anytime during the magpie breeding season which lasts from July until December. “If you can’t avoid the area it’s best to move through it quickly, but don’t run. Cyclists should dismount and walk through to avoid the risk of injury from a fall or collision. Ms Williams said walkers had found carrying an umbrella or wearing a hat and sunglasses were also useful in deterring magpie attacks. “Mums and dads should make sure their children are magpie-smart when going outdoors,” she said. “Explain that the male magpie’s aim is to drive perceived intruders away from the nest, not to cause injury. The swooping nearly always stops once you leave the area.” More information is available at www.ehp.qld.gov.au.

Obituary
Joan Grant Fitzgerald (nee Harrison) 10th February 1922 – 28th May 2013 By Pat Fitzgerald (Jr) and Janet Kan (nee Fitzgerald)
Joan was born near Adelaide in South Australia, on 10th February 1922. She was the only child of Edgar and Phyllis Harrison. Her father was a World War I veteran of the Western Front, serving in France and Belgium from 1916 to 1918. Her mother was a Domestic Science teacher until she married Edgar. Joan’s family life centred in and around Adelaide where she attended a Montessori School and later St. Peter’s Anglican Girls’ School. Walks in the Adelaide Hills held fond memories for Joan. Joan’s mother developed chronic asthma and a change of climate was recommended, so in the late 1930’s Edgar took up a position as a Survey Draughtsman in Darwin. Joan joined her parents when she finished school. For a time, she acted as Secretary and Personal Assistant to Mrs Abbott, wife of the (then) Northern Territory Administrator. Joan took up a position in the Darwin office of Guinea Airways . The evacuation of women and children from Darwin began in December 1941, with Joan and her mother leaving for Adelaide just before Christmas. Joan served in the Australian Women’s Army Service from 1942 until 1946. She played an important role in the organisation of troop movements throughout Northern Australia. After leaving the army, Joan completed a course at the Adelaide Kindergarten Teachers’ College. She was offered a teaching position at the Lady Gowrie Child Centre in Spring Hill, Brisbane, where she worked with toddlers and their parents until her marriage in 1950. Joan met her husband-to-be, Patrick Maurice Fitzgerald, at Binna Burra. They were married on 11th October, 1950, at St James’ Anglican Church in Toowoomba. Pat bought Beau View from the Leahy Brothers of the local timber industry. He and Joan had three children; Patrick (Jr), Janet and Richard. Pat (Sr) bought Killarney Glen from his uncle’s estate. He grew bananas there from 1958 to 1962, as part of his plans to use the site for public recreation and education. Killarney Glen had a long history of visitation for recreation dating back to the early 1900’s, with Killarney Falls and six other waterfalls on Back Creek identified on tourist maps before Binna Burra was established. However, Pat’s ill health intervened, followed by the compulsory acquisition of Killarney Glen and adjacent properties by the Commonwealth, at the end of the Vietnam War (1970 - 1971). Joan resumed teaching at Hillsdon Kindergarten, Taringa, in 1962. With her husband in and out of hospital, Joan became the
Joan in her 20’s in army uniform
family breadwinner until Pat (Sr) was well enough to return to Killarney Glen in 1965. During this time, Joan was appointed as Director of the Sherwood Kindergarten, where she taught for six years before completing a Graduate Diploma and continuing her career as a lecturer in Early Childhood at the Brisbane Kindergarten Teachers’ College (BKTC). Upon the sale of BKTC to the Queensland Government, Joan joined the Education Department, playing a key role in the development of the Pre-school Home Visiting Program. Joan taught in Brisbane’s Western suburbs until she retired in 1987, at the age of 65. She continued to be an active member of her community, serving as the Client Representative in the South West Brisbane Community Options Program. She was nominated for, and received, a Senior Australian of the Year award. In her 70s and 80s, Joan underwent two total knee replacements followed by two repairs. Moving in with her daughter’s family in 2004 enabled her to receive a high level of support while continuing a close relationship with her grandchildren, Dave, Matt and Tom. Joan enjoyed going for long drives and never lost her love of Beechmont. She was thrilled to celebrate her 90th birthday, both in Brisbane and at Beechmont, with her family and friends. In August 2012, Joan was diagnosed with myelodysplasia, meaning that her bone marrow had shut down and she could no longer produce her own blood. Joan spent the last 10 months of her life in Greenslopes and Canossa Private Hospitals. During that time she greatly appreciated the care she received from her doctors, nurses and other members of the hospital staff. Joan passed away peacefully at 3.30pm on the 28th May, 2013, with her family by her side.

Restoring Links from the Past By Nadia O’Carroll I was fortunate enough to have a private audience with the Dalai Lama in June. It was a privilege to meet him, in person he is kindly and witty but also impresses as a strong character and powerful intellect. It was also a pleasure to give him a set of photographs of eastern Tibet taken by my father in 1934/35. Such photographs are extremely rare since very few Westerners ventured into the remoteness of Tibet at that time. My father’s trip was an impulsive adventure and is an interesting story. His family had escaped from Russia to Shanghai in the nineteen twenties, Shanghai “the Paris of the East” although vibrant, decadent and exotic, could also be a desperate place for impoverished Russians and their life was harsh. The family established a marine salvage business and my father began diving at fourteen. Unfortunately my grandfather was killed in an explosives accident and relations between my father and his uncles deteriorated. After a chance meeting with an adventurous American, my father decided to travel to Tibet and had many exciting experiences. Fortunately he took a camera with him which captured images of the great natural beauty and unique culture of Tibet, which is unfortunately now sadly lost largely due to the Chinese occupation.
Nadia O’Carroll meets Tenzin Gyatso, Tibet’s Fourteenth Dalai Lama
My father never returned to Tibet but kept the photographs safe through many adventures, including sea voyages and shipwrecks, so I felt very happy that a long link had been completed when I was able to return to Tibetans some long lost images of their country and culture. In 1959, to avoid assassination, the Dalai Lama fled to India and established a Tibetan government in exile. Since then he has encouraged interfaith dialogue and the philosophy of individual responsibility, secular ethics and compassion. For more information about the Dalai Lama and Tibet vist the Tibet Information Office web site www.tibetoffice.com.au.
GLORIA WATTERSON The family of the late Gloria Watterson would sincerely like to thank the wider Canungra community for the overwhelming amount of support given to us on the recent loss of our beautiful wife, mother, mother- in- law and Ma Ma. We would especially like to thank Rev Valerie Hoare and the St Luke’s Anglican Church Guild. Also, the Canungra School of Arts Committee and the many people who helped in contributing to make Gloria’s farewell one that truly reflected the warm, loving person she was. The kindness and generosity of all of you has helped us through this very difficult time. We are deeply touched and so very grateful.

LETTERS
From My Window...
Thank You, Canungra! The initial heading for my column this month was ‘Where is our Humanity?’- you can imagine my state of mind at the time. Thankfully, Canungra came through for me. I received Rick Harrold’s moving letter which reminded me of the spirit of our town. I read through some of the ‘Why Canungra is the Best Town for Kids’ which were written by students from Canungra State School last month, and I received a phone call from someone about the Community Bank, full of support and positivity. What has stayed with me today is also a feeling of peace and calm from my class with Canungra Yoga. Something I haven’t tried before but would recommend. These might seem like small, insignificant things, but they are the things that lift me. It is the insurmountable big picture stuff that brings me down, the callousness of our federal politicians, the disregard for human lives. So thank you Canungra, you restored my faith in human nature. I might not be able to do much about some of the big picture stuff, but I can certainly appreciate the small picture from my window.

TO
A Letter This letter I write is to the wonderful Canungra community. Firstly, I’m sorry it’s taken this long to get this letter out, but I’ve not had the courage to do so until now. For all the people that didn’t know, my wife Joanne Harrold (Jo) lost her battle with cancer on the 26th April 2013. There are so many people who helped me and my boys through the past couple of months and I’m sorry that I can’t name them all. But I have to name some - firstly Bren and George Dalby. These two people are without a doubt the warmest, most kind hearted, ‘give the shirt off their back’ couple that anyone would be proud to call friends. I’m even luckier as I get to call them family ... I love you guys!!!! Jim and Desley Caswell and the wonderful people from the church for their support. Colleen Murphy and all of the staff at Canungra State School have helped so much it brings tears to my eyes just thinking about them. I’m so proud that my boys have a school like this to go to. Virginia West for going out of her way delivering food right to my door - I thank you so much. Dr Andrew Rees for coming up to our home to visit Jo when she was unable to get to him. John Wilson and the staff at the chemist - it was never a problem to stay back or to drop up the drugs that Jo needed to keep the pain under control. Without your help Jo would have been back in hospital more often so for that I thank you. Keer Moriarty from The Canungra Times for organising, producing and printing the order of service for the funeral. Without your help, Keer I wouldn’t have been able to do it !!! Thank you so much. Michelle and Caroline from the Canungra Op Shop - fantastic people - I love you both. Tracy Brose from Mount Tamborine High School has been fantastic support for

Trevor in helping him keep on track with his schooling through this terrible time. Tracy and her staff have supported us with food hampers and uniforms for Trevor. That sort of support is golden, thank you so much. Lastly but certainly not least my mum Elaine, my sister Debbie and my brother in law big Al. Your support through the whole ordeal has been overwhelming. Thank you for being there when we needed you most. I nearly forgot to thank two very important people David Barry who sang so beautifully at Jo’s funeral and my best friend Greg Caswell who has been by my side forever. I love you guys. I know there’s lots of people that I’ve forgotten to mention and for that I’m so sorry. I love this town and everyone in it. Hopefully when I get back on my feet I can repay our town some how !!!!! On behalf of my boys Trevor, Jack and Lucas, I thank you all. Rick Harrold

What’s On Tamborine?
There is a sign on Tamborine Mountain which describes the place perfectly. It reads ‘Tamborine Mountain is a Sanctuary’. Although I know it refers to a sanctuary for the flora and fauna which inhabit the area, it also describes the feel of the place. With beautiful rainforest walks, galleries, cafes and a range of boutiques and wineries, a day on the Mountain can be as relaxing or fun as you want to make it. The Curtis Falls walk is a personal favourite. Children will enjoy the hidey holes in the massive rainforest trees and the waterfall itself is a beautiful spot and a favourite for photographers. The park on Main Western Road, near the turn off the Main Road, is also a great place for a picnic or to let young children play during the day. Don’t forget to check out the fenced playground behind the information centre!
There are also a range of shops and businesses on the Mountain, some of which, like the newly opened Rouge Home Decor, provide products that aren’t available in Canungra.
Rouge Home Decor Situated in the new shopping centre on Main Western Road, Rouge Home Decor stocks a wide range of top quality home items, from kettles and toasters to decorative items such as cards, decorative knobs, wall decor and small furniture. Their range also extends to manchester such as quilts, blankets, throws, pillows and cushions, towels and bathrobes, saucepans, bakeware and utensils. With brands such as Sheridan, Canningvale, Dunlopillo Anolon, Esteele, Raco and Circulon you know the products are exceptional quality. Drop in to see Chris and Lesleigh for a browse or to get some ideas and advice for your home. Joseph the Greengrocer Joseph stocks a wide range of quality fruit and vegetables, including a variety of organic produce. The emphasis is on freshness The Last Tango Popular women’s clothing boutique, The Last Tango, is a must visit for any woman who loves clothes! New owner, Lynne McLean, has some hard to find labels in store including Lily White, David & Jesse, State of Mind, Sadie and Mavi Jeans.
Lily White Clothing is available from The Last Tango

Nature’s Gems
Greater Bilby (Macrotis lagotis) By Melissa Whitby One of the most interesting mammals I encountered in Western Australia earlier this year was the iconic Greater Bilby. This unique animal is familiar to many of us here who live in Queensland and eat chocolate at Easter! The Greater Bilby is best recognised for its long ears, long tail and blue-grey fur. Another species of Bilby known as the Lesser Bilby once also inhabited Australia but appeared to have become extinct by the late 1960’s. Bilbies are members of the bandicoot family. These iconic creatures are predominately nocturnal and dig deep burrows, which are used to reside in during daylight hours. Greater Bilbies are usually solitary and males are larger than females. These creatures have a varied diet, which includes bulbs, seeds, fruit, fungi, termites and ants. The Greater Bilby has a historical range that once extended throughout arid regions in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Northern Territory and Western Australia. Now, it is only found in western Queensland, the Tamaki Desert in the Northern Territory and parts of Western Australia. These creatures are a threatened species and one of the biggest threats they face are introduced pests such as cats and foxes.
Captive populations are kept in several facilities in Western Australia and Queensland. These populations are a safeguard and have also been used to release Greater Bilbies into predator-proof sanctuaries such as Scotia (Australian Wildlife Conservancy Property) and Dryandra in Western Australia. In Queensland, the Save the Bilby Fund created by Frank Manthey and Peter McRae, tirelessly campaigns to bring the plight of the Greater Bilby to the Australian public. For anyone interested in helping to save Bilbies, I would suggest visiting their website: www.savethebilbyfund.com These amazing animals are under serious pressure in western Queensland from feral cats. Recently, the state government undertook a program to remove feral cats from known Greater Bilby population sites. It is my hope that such programs are continued to protect this unusual creature. In my lifetime, I would hate to think that Australian native species such as the Greater Bilby become extinct in the wild. People such as Frank Manthey pass the message to the next generation in hope that through education, the Greater Bilby will exist for all Australians to admire in the future.

Support Projects
Applications are now open for Council’s Environmental Grants Program, with $77,000 funding on offer for projects that benefit the local environment. Mayor John Brent said the program aimed to encourage the community to take an active role in conserving the environment. “Council is keen to assist individuals and groups in proactively protecting and enhancing the unique environment and biodiversity of the Scenic Rim.” “Community members are invited to apply to receive funding for projects that support and improve the economic sustainability of the region through environmental stewardship.” Types of projects that may be eligible for funding include: • Run-off (sediment) reduction and water quality improvement. • Enhancement of our beautiful natural environment. • Tree planting and land restoration. • Bush regeneration. • Community environmental awareness. Deputy Mayor Virginia West said the program had funded a number of beneficial environmental initiatives in the past. “This program is one of the ways Council is able to support grassroots projects that achieve real on-ground results to help preserve our precious natural environment.” Applications for the Environmental Grants Program close Friday 9th August 2013. Application forms can be found on Council’s website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/ environmental-grants or phone 5540 5444.
Canungra Gets A Taste Of The Deep South.
Whether you are a country-rock, blues fan or just a music lover head down to the Canungra Rodeo at Canungra Showground on Saturday 10th August and sample some foot-stomping tunes with legendary guitarist Bo Jenkins and his band. If you like your music authentic then Bo is not be missed. A journeyman musician from Arkansas USA, Jenkins (who now resides in Canungra) performs music which reflects the richness of a life playing on River Boats and in the bars and clubs of
the famous Mississippi Delta region. This area has bred legends such as Sonny Boy Williamson, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and Charlie Rich. Jenkins’ show benefits from years of playing with the likes of Reba McIntyre to B B King. Bo has four albums out with the latest titled “Bo Jenkins Roadtrain”. He is a left handed up side down player, incorporating lots of slide guitar. Bo performs at Canungra Rodeo from 8pm.

Goat Track The Goat Track re-opened on 9th July after completion of its reconstruction. This project was an important priority for me to ensure Main Roads was on top of in the aftermath of January’s destructive storms. Motorists will notice that the section which was rebuilt is wider than the previous roadway. This road is an important link for Canungra area residents and businesses, and its rebuilding involved the use of over 26,000 tonnes of rock. While it is great to see the road re-opened, I take this opportunity to thank all residents for their patience during the closure and urge people to take care when driving up and down the Goat Track and to observe signed speed limits at all times. Phil Chadwick (pictured above with Cr Virginia West) of Canungra Auto Clinic became an Australian Citizen at a ceremony held at The Centre, Beaudesert on 6th June 2013. Phil was granted residency and moved to Australia in July 2008, with his wife Jacqui and their two daughters. They all now live in Canungra and Phil and Jacqui have owned and managed Canungra Auto Clinic since February 2012.
Conveyancing Tips Update Your Life
By Suzanne Roberts, Practice Director, Informed Conveyancing Lawyers Excellent!! Settlement has been completed! Whether you have just bought or sold a property, now is the time to make a Will; or if you already have a Will, consider updating it to reflect either the acquisition or disposal of your substantial asset. Phone your lawyer today to make an appointment. You should also consider choosing an accountant – someone who specialises in areas that impact you the most. If you have purchased an investment property, choosing the right accountant can help you maximize the tax benefits of that investment property. If you are unsure of which accountant
to use, then phone your lawyer or a good friend and ask them who they use – a referral is the best compliment any professional can receive. Also with an investment property, again to maximize the tax benefits, ensure you obtain a Tax Depreciation Schedule as soon as possible; and for your protection - you have a Landlord/Tenant insurance policy in place. If you are concerned a tenant will not maintain the property i.e. mowing of lawns, cleaning of the pool then we suggest you increase the weekly rent by say $10.00 or $20.00 to cover the cost of your entering into an agreement with a gardener/pool cleaning company.

Fire Ants Fire ants are still an issue in South-East Queensland, and all residents should be on the lookout for fire ant nests on or near their properties. While Canungra is not presently considered to be at risk, vigilance and early reporting of fire ants is vital to eradication of this pest which has the potential to significantly damage our agricultural and tourism industries as well as being a danger to pets, livestock and people. Further information about fire ants can be obtained at www.biosecurityqueensland.qld.gov.au or by calling 13 25 23. Queensland Plan Where do you think Queensland will be in 30 years? What should we all be doing now, and what plans should we be making, to ensure Queensland is ready for the challenges of the future? The Queensland Plan is a plan being made for Queensland, by all Queenslanders, and you have the opportunity to contribute to the plan by considering six questions which were drafted by a collective effort of over 400 Queenslanders from all over the state in May. The Queensland Plan is not just about the Beaudesert Electorate, or the Canungra region – it will be a plan for the whole State. I encourage all residents to have their say by going online to www.queenslandplan.qld.gov.au and answering the six questions. A paper survey can also be obtained for submission from the Beaudesert Electorate Office. The opportunity to have your say closes on 30 August 2013, and the plan will be finalised by a summit of Queenslanders in Brisbane in October 2013. JP’s and Comm Decs The Attorney-General and JP Branch recently sent letters to all JP’s and C.Decs asking them to ensure their correct details are updated on the register or requesting them to resign if they are no longer active within their role. If you have been a JP or C.Dec and have not been contacted would you please ring 1300 301 147 or email jp@justice.qld.gov.au. Contact Me Please contact me if I can be of assistance in any matter.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council Wonglepong CWA It is always a pleasure to attend the CWA AGM. This small group of dedicated women assist so many organisations and individuals both locally, nationally and internationally, while at the same time having lots of fun and laughs and making lifelong friendships. They are always happy to welcome new members, so if you are new to the area or looking to join a community group the CWA might be for you. Phone Joyce on 5543 5212 to find out more. New Waste Transfer Station Hours From 30th July the Canungra Transfer Station will be open from 9am until 5pm and closed on Thursdays. There is a new free recycling service there for Ewaste such as old computers and TVs. Grants The first round of Community and Environmental Grants for 2013/2014 are now open until 9th August if any community groups have items or projects requiring assistance. The Environmental Grants are available not only to community groups but also individuals who may have a project of environmental significance on their property. Goat Track Open Again By now most residents will be aware that the Goat Track repairs carried out by Dept of Main Roads have been completed ahead of time and Canungra retailers are very grateful for this. Our State member Jon Krause has been advocating strongly for our area to get this done as soon as was possible after the January storm that caused a section of the road to drop away. BorrowBox Have you installed the new BorrowBox app on your computer? This will enable you to download eBooks and eAudiobooks from your local SRRC library. It is simple to set up, but either phone or drop in to the Canungra Library if you require any assistance. Upgrade of Water Pipelines Queensland Urban Utilities will start work this month on a major upgrade of water pipes around the town. Stage one involves Pine St, Franklin St, Tamborine St and a portion of Appel St. QUU will inform residents who may be impacted during the work. Constitutional Recognition - The Yes Vote At the upcoming Federal Election you will be asked to vote in this referendum and local government encourages all residents to vote YES to ensure all federal funding to your local council comes directly to Council and not via another tier of government. A YES vote is about guaranteeing the flow of vital funds to our community which ensure essential infrastructure, especially roads, are able to be provided. Already this year Councils had to grapple with the loss of significant federal funding, a YES vote would help preserve this revenue for our community in the future. Your Stars - August 2013
By Phil Keeble - Answers page 31
ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
The light is dawning on the horizon. It’s been a tricky time for rams. The good news is that the worst is over. Before the sunrise comes ringing in, the experiences of the last few months will have to be integrated. Dust yourself off, do your hair and get ready for the next adventure.
TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20)
Your mojo has got you in a position of power. It wasn’t ambition that got you there. It was your innate strength shining through, when required. Now that you’ve become more conscious of where you are, you must watch out for the tricks of your mind. Stay as natural as you can.
GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Finally the stuckness moves. Life removes the log that was causing the logjam. There’s now a rush of wild activity that’s slightly delirious. Existence has been keeping you still and your nature is movement. The inevitable result is that you come back into action like a jack-in-the-box.
1
1
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The Sun is in Leo. If that’s not a reason to celebrate, nothing is. It’s birthday time for lions. Put on your party hat and go to town. Mars comes into Leo later in the month. That means that there’s a general strengthening of qualities that have been running a bit ragged of late. Be proud.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Mercury has gone direct, after an eternity of retrograde movement. No longer does it feel like life is delaying delivery, or that you are slipping around like a dog on tiles. Traction is a very satisfying experience for one so pragmatic as yourself. Venus adds delight to the equation.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Venus arrives midway through the month. Before she does, life feels a little flat. The moment she arrives, you come alive. Life sparkles and shimmers in ways that it hasn’t for some time. Do your best to have the experience without discombobulating it, by trying too hard to possess it.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
The feeling that something that was glued into place comes unstuck, surprises you. Perhaps you are glad for stuckness to break free. Perhaps something that you thought was certain proves to be less than certain. The river must keep flowing. You know that. Don’t react, respond!
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Jupiter is taking you to task over anything that you might be evading or protecting yourself from. He is in Cancer, which is the sign of emotional engagement. This doesn’t bode well for feats of escapology. It does bode well for a deepening of the truth, as you need it to be lived.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
The focus is mostly inner. Your interest is to be yourself. How you go about this is your business. No amount of wellintentioned help, or well-meaning advice, can prevent you from having to live the things you need to live, to wake up in your own way. Remain alert and sensitive.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Events have the feeling about them that something is being delayed. The speed of your imagination and the speed of life, are a little out of synch. Let go of any stress this causes before it gains traction. Use the time you have to hone your craft, whatever your craft is. Do it well.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Relationship is a merry dance indeed. Both Neptune and Chiron, who are both in Pisces, are retrograde, which means they appear to be going backwards. That means that you are inclined to think that things are going backwards too. It’s an optical illusion. Stay with what matters.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
The tendency to over-think your feelings is likely to ease off now. You can get back to having some faith in your emotions. It’s debilitating to second-guess matters that you thought were as solid as rock. Jupiter is around to give you a helping hand whilst expanding horizons.

Canungra Yoga
Have you ever wondered what that abandoned hall was on Appel St, just down from the pub? Well it is now Canungra’s first yoga studio. Kara and her friends and family have spent hours converting the run-down hall into a beautiful two story space for everyone to come and learn yoga. The classes are tailored for beginners at the moment, but many intermediate students are also coming regularly and working at their own pace. The line that is most often used when someone is asked if they are going to try yoga is: “I can’t, I am too inflexible!”. Well that’s exactly who these classes are designed for, and in a gradual and progressive way your body will be transformed toward greater strength, flexibility and balance. Local personal trainer, Stephen Crooks said he is attending classes to increase his flexibility which will assist his weight training. Some powerful benefits of yoga include it’s ability to slow down and reverse the ageing process, helps relieve stress, anxiety, mild

depression, back pain, headaches, insomnia, digestive problems, and menopausal symptoms. At this stage the timetable is: Tuesday: 9.30am and 6.30pm Thursday: 9.30am and 6.30pm Saturday: 10am
If there is enough demand there may also be a Saturday 8am class included. To see the latest timetable and FAQ’s please visit www.canungrayoga.com or “like” Canungra Yoga on Facebook.
CT’s DVD Review
SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK By Keer Moriarty Rated: M. Length: 176 mins. Director: David O Russell. Cast: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver.
Bradley Cooper plays ex-teacher, Pat, who has lost his job, his home and his wife. After spending time in a mental institution to treat his bipolar disorder, he ends up living with his parents, played by veteran American actor Robert De Niro and Australian Jacki Weaver. Pat meets Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence of The Hunger Games) and enlists her help to reconnect with his wife. From the start it is clear that these two share a common bond and the evolution of the characters and their relationship is ... Mental illness is a difficult subject to bring to the screen and Silver Linings Playbook addresses the subject well. Throughout the film we see characters
who may not have an official diagnosis but are certainly dysfunctional (Pat’s father for instance). At times I was left wondering whether Pat was the most sane one amongst his family! Jennifer Lawrence won an Oscar for Best Actress for her role and the remainder of the cast are outstanding. Bradley Cooper is probably better known as a ‘pretty boy’ but certainly proves himself as an actor in this film. Although I found some scenes a little confronting, I can not rate this film highly enough. Some younger viewers may not share my views but if you are looking for a really good film, you can’t go past Silver Linings Playbook.
Why not book yourself and a friend in to participate in a hands on cooking class using local produce and native food? Take advantage of our $20 local’s discount for our classes in September, October and November and enjoy a fabulous 2 hour cooking class followed by lunch with local wines. This is a fantastic local experience not to be missed!. Dates and menu details available at www.greentriangle.com.au or phone 1800 503 475.

3rd To 10th July - NAIDOC Week NAIDOC Week celebrations are held around Australia to highlight the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island people. The school is built on the traditional land of the Wangerriburra people, and the influence of the Wangerriburra Traditional Owners impacts on the school in many ways. This is acknowledged at parade each week and there is a sign at the front of the school, with the school sign, to ensure we all remember this important fact. The school has a Bush Tucker Garden between the two Bendigo buildings which has signage informing the community of what is planted in that garden. There is also a Cultural Trail on the creekbank which was created with the input and wisdom of the traditional owners.

National Tree Day 2013 By Jodie Clifford Planet Ark’s National Tree Day and Schools’ Tree Day provide all Australians with an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature. Hundreds of thousands of Australians planted over one million native trees, shrubs and grasses at more than 3,300 Tree Day events in 2012. Councils, schools and community groups became involved to make it all happen. Each year, around 2,500 preschools, kindies, primary and high schools across Australia take part in Schools Tree Day. Planet Ark’s 2013 Research Missing Trees: The Inside Story of An Outdoor Nation Planet Ark’s 2013 research, reveals shrinking backyards, screen time and long working hours have concerning implications for Australia’s renowned outdoor way of life and our health. The research shows that the outdoor culture we pride ourselves on is being eroded as Aussie backyards are shrinking, we’re working longer hours and kids are playing on-screen rather than outside. For every hour we spend outside, we spend over seven hours in front of screens Even pastimes such as playing cricket and football and having barbecues are in jeopardy as a result of our changing lifestyles.
Released in the lead up to National Tree Day on Sunday 28th July 2013, the research report, titled Missing Trees - The Inside Story of an Outdoor Nation, builds upon previous research commissioned by Planet Ark that shows a direct link between childhood contact with nature and a range of health and wellbeing benefits. CSS Green Team recognise these benefits and is again celebrating Schools Tree Day on Friday 9th August with a commemorative Green Team tree planting. The Schools Tree Program at CSS is focussing on installing advanced native shade tree species on the oval perimeter to ensure students into the future are provided with a recreation space that is functional, beautiful and has positive environmental outcomes. To find out more about National Tree Day visit http://treeday.planetark.org.
Adina to Compete in Trial des Nations
Motorcyclist and 2010 FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year, Adina Reed has been selected to represent Australia in the 2013 Trials des Nations (TDN) in La Chatre, France on 8-9th September. Adina has been competing in Moto Trials since 2008 and in 2012 placed first in the Open Women’s division Adina Reed at the Queensland Titles. In September 2012 she placed fourth at the Australian Moto Trials Championships in Perth, Western Australia. Adina said representing Australia in the TDN has been her goal since her first year of competition. “It is the most important motorcycle trials competition organised by the International Motorcycling Federation, with over 20 countries competing,” she said. Adina has also been given the opportunity to compete in round eight of the FIM World Trials Championship in Isola, France, the weekend before the TDN. A fundraising day will be held on 17-18th August at Hinchcliffe’s farm (approximately seven kilometres along Upper Coomera Road, Canungra) to assist Adina with the cost of travelling and competing overseas. The day includes moto trials coaching, camping, raffles, prizes, giveaways and dinner on Saturday night. For more information please contact Kale on 0430 518 433 or Adina on 0432 062 454 or book via email totaltrialsfun-raiser@mail.com.

Canungra Kids Achieve Excellence
The Canungra Swimming Club saw three of its swimmers awarded under the Swimming Queensland Junior Excellence Program. Joseph Sheppard (13 years) achieved a green level, his brother Thomas Sheppard (12 years) also achieved a green level and Erynn Phillips (10 years) achieved a bronze level under the scheme. The children have worked hard over summer, attending squad regularly and going to many of the local swimming meets. The coach, Alanna Phillips, hopes to encourage more local children to join the club and to compete.
“Swimming is an excellent sport to stay fit, make friends and have fun. We have a great 2013/14 season planned with a fun weekly program, some great fundraising activities and development weekends at the beach. If the children want to do well at swimming there are plenty of opportunities with learn to swim lessons offered at the pool and squad sessions every morning and afternoon,” she said. “The Canungra pool should open on 21 September and fun days are being organised to kick off the swimming season.” For enquiries about Canungra Swimming Club, contact Alanna on 0409 752 997.

Sport Canungra Teams in Finals Contention By David Baker Canungra Owls have two of our three junior teams and our only senior team in line for a berth in the finals in September. The women’s side are in clear second place on the ladder behind Gold Coast Knights. Please come and support the ladies on 7th and 21st August at 7pm to firm up the second place and a possible chance for a Grand Final. The Under 15 Gold Division 2 side are also in second place behind Burleigh Heads with Runaway Bay and Mudgeeraba breathing down their necks. Good luck for the four remaining games and the chance of a place in the grand final! The under 13s have had a great season so far in the Division 2 competition and with a bit of luck and good management they should also find themselves in the finals. These are great results for a small club such as Canungra and all the players, coaches and parents should be very proud. Well done to the under 9 Gold side that competed at the Surfers Paradise carnival on Sunday 21st July. The side enjoyed two good wins against Runaway Bay and Mudgeeraba and losses to a strong Robina side, Brisbane Olympic and Magic. Thanks to Peter Parry for being coach for the day and to the boys who tried hard all morning.(Will, Jonah, Jared, Jimmy, Murphy, James, Jake and Sam). With the season end approaching it is time for all members to think about how they can help out next season as either a committee member, coach, manager or canteen helper. The AGM will be held in a few months when everyone will have a chance to put their hand up to help in any way they can. From personal experience it is a great way to meet new people and forge new friendships in the Canungra community. Any men seriously interested in playing for Canungra Owls next season can register your interest with Will Sayer on 0437 434 955 or Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919 so pre season training can be organised before the end of the year. The Canungra Hotel continues to allow the club to conduct meat tray raffles every second Sunday lunchtime and we require volunteers to continue this vital fundraiser which allows our fees to remain low. Please call Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919 if you are interested in helping out one Sunday. Many thanks to Alesia and Bren for their efforts at the pub during July. Good luck to all the players for the remainder of the season!!!!!!

Community Swings Behind Local Charities By Keith Cogzell It was a day to be remembered by most and perhaps best forgotten by others. Sixty golfers turned out on Sunday 28th July at the Canungra Golf Club to raise funds for the Canungra Rural Fire Brigade and the local Ambulance station in a day marked by fun, fellowship and frustration. When the hooter sounded the start of the two man Ambrose competition, experienced golfers answered the call with long, sweet drives down the fairways towards the greens. The hackers, some with clubs worthy of a museum display, attacked the ball as if it was some sort of enemy. The good golf and the ball punishment continued side by side throughout the morning in an event where regular players united with good sports to have fun and help our local community. Fancy dress was optional for the players but the variety of outfits was as broad as the skills of the golfers. Fairies shot by in electric golf carts, surgical teams showed their precision with their clubs, Mexicans added to the mix while others like the firies opted to show the flag in their uniforms. Event co-organiser Vicki Eldrige congratulated those who took part and thanked local businesses for their sponsorship support. Trilogy
Over 60 golfers turned out for a memorable day to raise funds for local fire and ambulance services
Accounting, T Bones Butchers, Foodworks, Craig Staff, the Canungra Hotel, the RSL and Golf Club all got behind the event. She reported that around $1,000 was raised for the combined Fire Brigade and Ambulance cause. Vicki and co-organiser Sarah Kurz of Canungra RSL Services Club also thanked volunteer workers Rob Ennis, Liz Bobbermien and Graham Mulheran and Geoff Needham who drove the RSL courtesy bus. First Officer Stephen Geiger from Canungra Rural Fire Brigade expressed appreciation
to Canungra Golf Club, Canungra RSL, the sponsors and all who participated in this show of support for the needs of local emergency services. Competition winners were G Mulheran and G Owen, runners up were C Staff and L Staff, followed by B Mills and M Mills and S Stevenson and J Beaver. Best dressed went to the very courageous T Eldridge and D Batten.
Some players took their golf very seriously, but possibly not their outfits... Page 34
