Local Pool Builder Takes Master Builder Award for the Second Year

Pool Builder, Jamie Bramich of J B Pool Construction has won the Gold Coast’s Best Swimming Pool at the Master Builders Housing and Contruction Awards on Saturday 25th July for the second year running. Based at Wonglepong, J B Pool Construction was awarded the 2015 Gold Coast’s Best Swimming Pool for a wrap around pool which also has two clear glass windows which look through from the pool into the home. The pool was created to address his client’s very specific needs - to be long enough to exercise, yet also matching the modern and sophisticated style of the home. Although the award winning pool was located on the Gold Coast, J B Pool Construction has a host of rural projects to their name. Jamie enjoys developing a plan to suit the client’s home, lifestyle and block, whether it is for an established or a new home. His attention to detail and ability go beyond expectations in the design and finish of the pools he builds make him a sought after name in pool building.

“Our clients want their living environment to reflect their own lifestyle. I understand this. I’ve obtained a reputation for a high standard of workmanship, affordable creations,” said Jamie. Jamie said he was very proud to go back to back with the Master Builders’ award, particularly in this highly competitive category. Above and right: J B Pool Constructions’ award winning pool. Left: This pool spans almost 16 metres of a previously unusable part of this acreage propery. Designed by Jamie and the property’s owner, it is complemented by a Balinese cabana, beautiful gardens and a man cave. The pool was created to suit the lifestyle of the client’s young family, as well as providing the perfect entertainment area for family and friends. Photos: Rix Ryan Photography

Lamington Grows on its Centenary

The Queensland Government announced a 586 hectare addition to Lamington National Park – the largest extension to the Gold Coast hinterland park since it was declared in 1915. National Parks Minister Dr Steven Miles, visiting Green Mountains to celebrate the park’s centenary said the extension is a forested area of mostly intact, natural vegetation along the eastern edge of the Lamington escarpment, next to the Gold Coast Hinterland Great Walk, extending north from Egg Rock. “The land contains a range of biodiversity significance, and it forms a corridor between Lamington and Springbrook national parks,” he said. “I’m thrilled to announce that such a large piece of land in Numinbah Valley will be added. The parcel is being transferred from Corrective Services to the Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing,” he said. The extension that gives the rugged World Heritage-listed park a total area of more than 21,000 hectares. For for a full story about the Lamington Centenary, see page 22 of this edition, or for more information about Lamington National Park’s centenary and World Ranger Day visit www. npsr.qld.gov.au.

Markets Seek Community Support By Sue McKenna

Canungra Valley Markets is in it’s third year and we thought it was time to revisit some of the more important details about our markets. We are a community based, not for profit market, with stall fees donated back to the Canungra School of Arts Hall. We have contributed to a lot of upgrades to the Hall since the markets began in May 2013. We have thoroughly enjoyed watching each upgrade the Hall has undertaken, and feeling a sense of great pride to know we have been involved in them. Some of the projects we have proudly helped along are: The upgrade to the outside of the hall with painting and the slats along the bottom of the hall, painting inside to the walls, major floor upgrade and resurfacing, and the new PA System. We feel that it is vital as a community to give back in some way, this is our way.

Customer numbers are falling this year and we feel the need to ask for community support. We have a lot of talented local people in Canungra and surrounds and their wares are some of the most beautiful and unique items you will find anywhere. Why go to a big chain store for “that special gift” when you can come along and purchase a truly stunning and unique gift that no one else has? We are also in desperate need of licenced baked goods stalls and fresh produce, both of which we have not managed to find for some time. We run on the last Sunday of each month, from 7am till 12 noon. All new stallholders welcome. Our next market is 30th August. For bookings and enquiries please call Sue or Judy on 5543 4345 or 0432 050 261. You can also find us on facebook under Cannungra Valley Markets or email canungravalley markets@gmail.com.

Beauty and Healing

Well known in this area as a massage and beauty therapist, Lynne Milner now has her own main street shop with a range of products and services available for her clients. Lynne had been working in Natural Beauty Therapies for 25 years when she saw a need for an Australian, natural skincare range. Lynne’s own range of natural skin care, Eve by Nature, was developed with her daughters, Jessica and Peta and is produced in Brisbane from all natural, Australian ingredients to Lynne’s strict specifications. Many of the ingredients are native bush plant extracts such as Lillipilli, , Kakadu Plum and Quandong. With their youth enhancing feel on the skin, you will not only feel close to nature, but enjoy vibrant and healthy looking skin. Eve by Nature is now available from Lynne’s newly opened shop here in Canungra. In addition to the skin care range, Lynne will be offering beauty services such as facials, waxing, spray tans, and relaxation, hot stone and remedial massage. Healing and psychic services will also be offered by The Healing Room - Lynne and a team of experienced healers and psychics whom Lynne has worked with for many years. Working with clients by appointment, the practitioners work together as a team to provide clients with a variety of energy healing therapies and gentle clearings for the etheric energy body and physical body. Each practitioner has their own style of healing, whilst they all combine the intuitive and psychic processes with various healding tools which they use throughout their sessions. Eve by Nature is open Tuesday to Saturday at 1/28 Christie Street, Canungra (next to In the Raw Health Food shop). For enquiries and bookings phone Lynne on 5543 5467.

Obituary

Dr Burnard Elliott - ‘Dr Burnie’ 15 June 1945 - 9th June 2015

Burnard James Elliott was born on 15th June 1945 in Sydney to Vera and Herbert (Bertie) Elliott. He spent his early years in Maroubra where his love of the ocean was formed. He loved to body surf and continued to do it as long as his back allowed. Some of his ashes were let go at Burleigh Heads which was one of his favourite spots for surfing. Some more of his ashes were scattered at Maroubra and some in the park in Canungra. These three places meant a lot to him. Burnie married Patricia Grieve in 1967 and together they had two children, Kirsty and Hamish. Burnie and Tricia moved to Matamata, New Zealand in 1972. This was Burnie’s first experience as a country doctor. Matamata is a small dairy farming and horse breeding town, a bit bigger than Canungra but not too dissimilar. After Burnie and Tricia separated he moved back to Sydney and set up practice there for a few years before deciding to take up some locum work in Darwin. This is where he and Sue Blacker met and fell in love, to be married in Nerang a few short years later. Burnie and Sue found a great opportunity in Canungra and he was able to resume his role as a country doctor. Burnie loved to be closely involved in the community and a small town allowed him this. He thrived on his relationships with his patients, it was important to him to follow their progress, many times from their first

Dr Burnie at his surgery in Canungra. Photo: Chloe Pickard.

moments in life through to becoming adults and having their own families. Canungra was a special place for Burnie and Sue, they experienced the typical warm welcome right from the start and made many enduring and deep friendships. Sue passed away on 12th November 2014 and this was a terrible loss for Burnie, who sadly passed away just six months later on 9th June 2015.

The Ambulance Service By Joe Rye, Officer in Charge, Canungra (retired) I first met Burnie in 1992 when I came to Canungra as the only Ambulance Officer in the station. Burnie and Sue quickly became friends who I could rely

on for backup when I needed and a chat and coffee at other times. As an Ambulance Officer it was a good feeling knowing that Burnie was available for patient stabilisation or pain relief enroute to hospital at the surgery or if needed at the location of an incident. Bernie was never too busy to help which was much appreciated. In 1994 the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee was formed. Burnie and Sue were at the original meeting. Bernie was one of the first to put his name up and was elected onto the original committee. This meant that when there was a meeting of other activity for the Local Ambulance Committee Burnie would have to drive home to Nerang after the meeting. With the LAC nothing was too much trouble for him. At the first annual meeting Burnie was elected as President and remained in that position until after I retired in 2008. I am unsure how long he stayed as President after I left. After I retired I lost track of the LAC but kept in contact with Bernie from time to time. The Local Ambulance Committee liaised well with the community and raised considerable funds to purchase the extra equipment to allow us, as Ambulance Officers/Paramedics, to deliver the best possible Patient Care to everyone. This was always well supported by Bernie and the Committee and Bernie’s attitude was always “if you need it, let’s get it”. Queensland Ambulance Service

Time to Turn Pink Again!

It’s almost time to Turn Canungra Pink again and raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council. Last year was a huge success with over $20,000 cash donated to the Cancer Council when the town turned pink during October to raise awareness. This year organisers Canungra Chamber of Commerce and radio station Breeze FM are hoping to include more events, to make the month even bigger and better! They have drafted a preliminary calendar of events in conjunction with businesses and community organisations. However they would like to hear from anyone who has an event they would like to add to the calendar or prizes to donate to a monster raffle. Any events should follow the ‘Pink’ theme, with profits donated to the Cancer Council “The community spirit for the event was unbelieveable,” said Breeze FM’s Sales Executive, Tim Flint, “It couldn’t have happened

Canungra is getting ready to Turn the Town Pink in October!

without the support we received from the people of Canungra.” For more information or to register your event, please contact Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Desley Bird, on telephone 0412 767 007.

Incentives To Jump Start Job Creation

Peter Geiger and Ian Taylor

Celebrating Great Service

There were celebrations at the Canungra Bowls Club on Friday 17th July to honour Captain Peter Geiger and Lieutenant Ian Taylor from Canungra Fire Station Peter and Ian are retiring from Queensland Fire and Emergency Services after long and valued service to the organisation and the community. Ian has 15 years service and Peter 35 years. They were joined on the night by Inspector Chris Robinson who congratulated them on behalf of QFES. “Well done to retiring Captain Peter Geiger and Lieutenant Ian Taylor. Thank you for what you achieved and gave to the Canungra community in your years of loyal service. Hang up the helmet ... stow away your turn out gear and have a cold beer ... enjoy,” Chris said. They were joined on the night by friends, family and colleagues who all showed their appreciation for the service the men have provided.

Job creation, growth and opportunity for the Scenic Rim community are at the heart of a new Council initiative aimed at stimulating the local economy. Mayor John Brent said new incentives introduced by Council represented an unprecedented pitch to attract employment generating development. “Scenic Rim Jobs Jump Start provides a significant and unprecedented catalyst for the activation of development, principally commercial and industrial but also accommodation classifications, which demonstrably contribute to longterm job creation,” Cr Brent said. He said Council would offer qualifying developments incentives including up to a full waiver of infrastructure charges, to a maximum of $400,000 per development application. To receive the full waiver eligible developments will need to be completed no later than the end of December 2016. Qualifying developments completed by the end of December 2017 would receive a 75% discount on infrastructure charges, while those finished by the end of 2018 would receive a 50% discount. “These three tiers of incentives represent a saving on potential project costs,” Cr Brent said. “Importantly, projects within the Bromelton State Development Area are eligible for these incentives.

“But it is not just about new development, local businesses going through the development application process to expand their facilities are also eligible. Cr Brent said Council is serious about fostering an environment which supports development and leads to sustainable future employment. “However, it’s a tough business landscape at present and while we can’t compel developers to act upon their approvals, I believe we’re making them an offer too good to refuse,” he said. “It’s crucial that we facilitate local employment opportunities for our current and future population which over the next two decades is expected to double. Cr Brent said the waiving infrastructure charges under Scenic Rim Jobs Jump Start would have no impact on residential rating outcomes, nor would the community be disadvantaged. “While these charges do contribute to the funding of Council’s total budget, they are not tie to an immediate infrastructure need in the community,” he said. “The total value of waivers which may be granted during the life of the program has been capped at $3 million which will be returned to the community in the long-term through growth in the rates base.”

New Standpipe Arrangements

Residents on tank water will be reassured to know that QUU (Queensland Urban Utilities) have completed upgrades on the standpipes in Canungra (Lamington National Park Rd), Rathdowney (Running Creek Rd and John St), and Beaudesert (Helen St) so water can now be accessed with a Visa/ MasterCard credit/debit card or a Smartcard rather than the old Itag system. The new filling stations have both a 75mm outlet (male camlock, bottom fill) and a 25mm outlet (threaded hose) and customers are required to supply their own filling hose. This will allow greater flexibility and access for all residents and travellers who wish to replenish their water supplies. For further information www.urbanutilities.com. au/filling stations.

Eat Local Week

They were all run off their feet with attendance. The grand finale and signature event, the Winter Harvest Festival, drew a crowd of 6,000 visitors, locals and from outside the region who enjoyed a day of fun and food. Congratulations to the two Canungra Teams in the Junior Tractor Pulling Competition; Canungra Crush and Canungra Cowgirls, who took out 2nd and 3rd places. You kept up the Canungra tradition girls!

Why Shop Local? The year has flown and as I opened a folder with ‘September 2015’ I feel like I’ve missed most of 2015 - where did it go? Before we know it, Christmas shopping will be on the agenda and the usual Christmas round of parties and celebrations will be upon us. Before it comes to that, take some time to consider where your money is spent. Sometimes it can’t be helped, but if you buy from a department store or supermarket out of town, does that mean the person who coaches your children’s soccer team will lose their job or close their business? The ramifications of chosing where to spend your money are greater than you think. As consumers we have a lot of power, particularly as a small community where local businesses rely on local trade and the flow on effects are long reaching. So that soccer coach who loses his job because people aren’t shopping locally, has to move away to get work. His kids have to move schools and the local school doesn’t have the numbers to keep the teachers. His wife has to close her business because they’ve moved, leaving her casual employees without work... Ok, this is a hypothetical situations, but you can see where it’s headed. Before you spend this Christmas (and before), stop and think about what your money is going to do.

A great Rodeo in July and the Canungra Show coming up this month. On behalf of the Police at Canungra I’d like to thank all those who attended the Rodeo for the exemplary behaviour displayed. There are not many large events that occur where alcohol is available and there are not at least a few problems. We don’t want to get in the way of anyone having a good time, and with no reported assaults, thefts, drink drivers or accidents there is no pressure from above to bring Police from outside of town to help which is good for everyone. The Rodeo and Show are family events and the Committee have done a great job organising and putting them on and should be supported. We’ve had some success in charging an offender responsible for breaking into the Albert River Winery in May. A Gold Coast man has been charged, and we believe the same person is responsible for the break-ins at the Canungra Golf Club and wineries on Mount Tamborine. Investigations are continuing with a view to having these cleared in the near future. Road Safety Week is running from the 17th to the 21st August. It will involve a combination of education and enforcement with a focus on a different theme each day. Themes for the week are: • Monday 17/8/15 – Distraction and Inattention which includes using mobile devices while driving. • Tuesday 18/8/15 – Speed and Risky Behaviour. • Wednesday 19/8/15 – Fatigue. • Thursday 20/8/15 – Share the Road. • Friday 21/8/15 – Impaired Driving. As part of the week we will be holding a Drink Rite event at the Canungra Hotel from 5pm on Friday 21st August. Simon from the Hotel will be organising a few volunteers to have a drink and submit to breath tests. We will show how the blood alcohol readings are different depending on the person and what they drink over time. We’ll be able to test anyone else who is curious about where they’re at after a few drinks and hopefully answer any questions you might have. If you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious please come and see us or contact the station on one of the below numbers: • Canungra Police 55435120, • Police Link on 131444 or • Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The Canungra Times August 2015

Join in the Fun at Canungra Show!

Organisers are urging the community to join this year’s Canungra Show by getting involved in activities on the day and entering craft, produce and arts in the various categories. Canungra AH&I Society President, Airlie Worrall said the Society would love to see more people helping out at the working bees on 15th and 21st August, and joining in the clean up on 23rd August. “We have a great group of people here and we appreciate every bit of help people can contribute,” said Airlie. “While we are here to provide a day for people to get together, it is also a great chance to meet new people, cement friendships and join in a group that works together to achieve a common goal.”

There are several new opportunities for people to get involved this year, with people needed to help taking entries and displaying them on the Friday afternoon and evening. The entertainment on the day includes many local acts - Matt Bird Chainsaw Carving, Dan the Magic Man, Inspire Dance Studios and Canungra State School will all be performing at the Show. “Canungra is a great show for families, in particular for those with young children. Our entertainment throughout the day has been designed with this in mind - people like Geckoes Wildlfie, Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express Show, Bubbleman, an animal farm, face painting as well as the carnival rides and ring events.”

“To finish off the day, and again with young families in mind, we will have the Bendigo Bank Fireworks at 7pm this year,” said Airlie. The fireworks time has been brought forward from previous years to allow those with young children to stay for the evening entertainment and watch the fireworks without making it a late night for young children. For people who want to stay on, local band Point O Five will be performing after the fireworks until late. To find out more about getting involved in the Show, call the Secretary, Lee McKenzie McKinnon on 0403 278 556. For more information about Canungra Show, visit www.canungrashowsociety. org.

Entertainment? Be Part of It!

This year’s Canungra Show entertainment will feature more crowd participation, with people urged to enter events early where possible. The Show will debut two new ring entertainment events - Bubble Football and Aussie Lifestyle Properties Dunny Races - as well as the arena spectacular, Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express Show. The Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express Show is a first class arena spectacular show that features fantastic stunts, true blue Australian comedy and awe inspiring horsemanship. Its loveable bush characters and amusing storyline encourages crowd participation and family fun. Canungra AH&I Society, Airlie Worrall said the Society, with the support of Canungra FoodWorks, is proud to be able to bring an event of this calibre to Canungra. Number are limited for the the Bubble Football and Dunny Races, so teams are invited to enter prior to Show Day on a ‘first in, first served basis”. Bubble Football is an increasingly popular sport for fun and fitness. Played in the main arena, teams will play out 10 a side games. Don’t have time to make a racing Dunny? Don’t worry, Canungra Show Society has a host of premium racing dunnies you can use on the day! Get your team of five together for a great laugh and an unforgettable experience. Entry is available on line or email canungrashowsociety@gmail.comfor entry forms. And if you can’t field a full team in either of these events but would like to have a go, contact the Society’s Entertainment Coordinator, Keer Moriarty on 0407 671 286.

Well Being

Locals in Ride to Conquer Cancer

Happiness

Would you agree that HAPPINESS is a big part of being truly healthy? You can be as slim and fit looking as you like, but if you’re not happy, can you really claim good health? It’s the reason I called my business Fit HAPPY Slim - because I really believe the happiness is a key factor in feeling, and being, healthy. It’s funny how the right message always comes to you just when you need it. As I planned this article I came across the following wisdom and thought it was perfect to share with you on the lines of happiness. It suggests the following ways to create a better life: STOP: • playing the victim card. • making excuses. • letting society tell you how to live. • trying to make other people happy. • relying on others to make you happy. • doubting yourself. START: • enjoying time alone. • positive thinking. • believing in yourself. • making your own happiness. • expressing your creativity. • acknowledging your desires/dreams/wishes. • make everything you want happen. • making your own happiness tips. • turning off gadgets and go outside. • helping others realise they can make their own happiness. I especially love the fact that we should stop relying on others to make us happy. It’s all too easy to blame others for our unhappiness, whereas it’s our own reaction to others’ behaviour that causes the unhappiness. Happiness comes when we stop complaining about the troubles we have, and give thanks for the troubles we don’t have! It’s not about getting what we want all the time, but loving what we have and being grateful for it.

• • • •

1 cup baby spinach leaves 200gm feta cheese, cubed salt and pepper 2 cups Arborio rice

Method:

Preheat oven to 200 degrees C). Brush a baking dish with olive oil. Place pumpkin in a steamer over 1 inch of boiling water, and cover. Cook until tender but still firm. Transfer pumpkin to baking dish, and brush with oil. Season with salt and pepper. Bake in preheated oven until golden brown. Meanwhile, heat olive oil in a saucepan. Cook onion and garlic until tender. Stir in rice, and cook for 1 to 2 minutes. Slowly add vegetable broth 1/2 cup at a time, stirring frequently and allowing all the liquid to be absorbed before adding more broth. Lamington National Park Celebrates its 100th birthday on World Ranger Day

The Gold Coast hinterland’s Lamington National Park celebrated its 100th birthday on Friday 31st July, which was also World Ranger Day. Minister for National Parks, Dr Steven Miles said the centenary was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate 100 years of conservation and the work of rangers. “Lamington National Park, covering more than 20,500 hectares of the McPherson Range, is an internationally recognised landscape valued for its natural and cultural aspects,” Dr Miles said. “The world heritage national park features one of the most diverse areas of vegetation in the country, and has found a place in the hearts of many who have visited over the last 100 years.” Dr Miles marked the centenary at Green Mountains with descendants of Robert Collins and Romeo Lahey who fought to have the area preserved as national park, and members of the Groom and O’Reilly families whose names have long been connected with the park’s conservation and tourism. Seven years after Mick O’Reilly was appointed the park’s first paid ranger in

Kit Krause with Minister for National Parks, Steven Miles and Jon, Angus and Rory Krause at the Lamington Centenary celebrations. Kit is the great-great-granddaughter (Rory and Angus the great-great-great grandsons) of Robert Collins.

1919, his family opened a guest house, now famously known as O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat. Third-generation Managing Director Shane O’Reilly said guests were educated on the importance of conservation and protection of the park and Lamington’s remarkable flora and fauna.

“Our continuing commitment to Lamington National Park has remained paramount from the day we opened our first slab huts at the Rainforest Retreat 89 years ago,” Mr O’Reilly said. “We are excited to be part of the Lamington 100th anniversary and look forward to celebrating the Park’s heritage, with presentations from O’Reilly family members and guided rainforest walks available to all visitors.” Lamington National Park Ranger in Charge Wil Buch said Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers continued to protect and promote the park. “You can still enjoy most of the original walking tracks, which were constructed in the 1930s with the establishment of the Binna Burra and O’Reilly guesthouses,” Mr Buch said. “Much of the track building was done by gangs undertaking Great Depression relief work, and we still use many of the same techniques today in track building and maintenance.” Visit www.npsr.qld.gov.au for more information about the Lamington centenary and World Ranger Day.

AWL Pets of the Month

Riddick is a special Bull Arab -Australian Cattledog cross who is also deaf so will need owners who are willing to put in the time and get professional training for him. He is not suitable as an outside dog and prefers to spend his time inside with his humans. He doesn’t like being alone for long periods of time, so would like to find someone who works from home or is retired. He walks beautifully on a lead and knows a few tricks like sit, drop and stay. Riddick is very sociable with other dogs and loves to play! His previous owners said he was very well behaved when inside and loves attention and cuddles from his human companions. He’s also been around children. Riddick is one year old and is only $150. He is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Shassa is a very sweet natured Pointer cross Weimaraner, who hasn’t had the best start to life, which has left her a little timid in new situations. She is unsure when first meeting dogs, but quickly relaxes around friendly canines. Shassa loves humans and would love to find a family who are willing to help her build her confidence and show her what love and affection truly is. Shassa is $250 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. To meet Riddick, Shassa or any of the other animals, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Nature’s Gems

Tasmanian Native-Hen By Melissa Whitby During my travels to Tasmania earlier this year, I encountered an array of fascinating wildlife. Recently, I have written several articles for the Canungra Times outlining the wilderness areas that I visited in Tasmania and the wildlife that lived in these specific regions. Several of the bird species I observed cannot be found anywhere else in the world other than Tasmania. One of the more obvious endemic bird species to Tasmania is the Tasmanian Native-Hen. This unusual bird was one of the first bird species I encountered on arrival in Tasmania. The only similar species to the Tasmanian Native-Hen is its mainland counterpart, the Black-tailed Native-Hen. The easiest way to distinguish between the two species is that the Black-tailed Native- Hen is smaller than the Tasmanian Native-Hen and has red legs. The Tasmanian Native-Hen is best identified by its brown upperparts, light coloured bill and white patch on its flank. Male and female birds have similar plumage. Immature birds have a grey bill. This species favours a variety of habitats including wetlands, open paddocks, lakes, roadsides and stream edges. These birds feed on a variety of food including insects, vegetation and seeds. The Tasmanian Native-Hen can be seen singly or in small groups. When disturbed, the birds will run and hide, as they are unable to fly. However, Tasmanian Native-Hens can be aggressive when interacting in small groups. The distribution of the Tasmanian Native-Hen is confined predominately to northern Tasmania. Throughout this range, the birds are relatively common. There were many locations where I observed this species in close contact with people in Tasmania. The best views I had of Tasmanian Native-Hens were on Bruny Island and Maria Island. I was able to approach the birds easily to observe them at close quarters and get some incredible photographs. For anyone travelling to Tasmania, I can guarantee that this will be the easiest endemic bird to find! I would also suggest that you spend some time observing the birds. For me, the Tasmanian Native-Hen quickly became one of Tasmanian Native Hen my favourite Tassie birds!

Winter Harvest Festival Pulls Record Crowd The 2015 Winter Harvest Festival attracted a record crowd of more than 6000 people, was a highlight of another successful Scenic Rim Eat Local Week. Visitors were queuing outside the Winter Harvest Festival venue by 9am Saturday morning, keen to be among the first through the doors. The organising team from the Scenic Rim Regional Council were thrilled by the crowd and the response to the event, now in its third year. Visitors bought Scenic Rim produce, wine, olives, jams, relishes, cheese and live crayfish from the more than 45 stalls.

The packed cooking demonstration schedule proved popular, with barely a spare seat for the demonstrations by all seven of the chefs. Kate Raymont of Hinterland Harvest Catering and Wild Lime Cooking School presented a cooking demonstration for her Verjuice and Rosewater Jelly with Macerated Strawberries, utilising many local ingredients. Canungra’s Greenlee Farm and the Visitor Informatoin Centre also held trade stalls at theFestival. Robyn and Paul Lee of Greenlee Farm were also busy with the Junior Tractor Pull which their daughters Morgan and Victoria competed in.

For Crafters who Love Fabric

After a small but enthusiastic meeting, a group of crafters are keen to establish a branch of ATASDA (Australian Textile and Surface Design Association) in the Scenic Rim. The Scenic Rim branch proposes to meet monthly on Wednesdays, from 9.30am to 2pm at a central venue in Beaudesert. Members can attend any ATASDA meeting or event, take part in workshops with tutors at very reasonable cost, network with artists and receive a quarterly magazine full of photos, projects and wonderful inspiration. Times are hard for small businesses across the state and Mt Cotton Retreat took advantage of the free ecoBiz program to help them with sustainable initiatives while keeping costs down. Caring for the environment is key to the way things are managed at Mt Cotton Retreat. Owners and ecoBiz partners Trevor Penson and Sue Panuccio have created a sustainable retreat in the heart of Queensland’s South-East. The retreat is on a private nature refuge, ‘Boom-BerPee’ (Koala), which was established in 2010 and has nine luxury cabins. In looking to reduce the cost of running the Retreat, Trevor and Sue took some key initiatives to minimise their footprint and preserve the environment as much as possible. The cabins are sustainably designed to make the most of breezes, which minimises the need for air conditioning. Rainwater is the sole water supply with around 190,000 litres of water storage which is filtered and UV treated. Wastewater is treated on site to advanced secondary standard and discharged via sub or surface irrigation. The cabins are fitted with key-power cards to minimise energy use by guests. They

have also been fitted with energyefficient LED lighting. Recyclable waste is separated for disposal and organic waste is composted on site. Through these initiatives and the help of ecoBiz, Mt Cotton Retreat made a 24% reduction (per booked night) in electricity use since 2012. As an ecoBiz partner, Mt Cotton Retreat understands that fostering a healthy, sustainable environment is important to the long-term sustainability of their business. ecoBiz is a free program that helps businesses save thousands of dollars across their energy, water and waste bills. The program delivers free workshops, webinars and one-on-one coaching to help all businesses across Queensland save money.

There’s a slow, building, emotional burn firing up. The more you tune into your heart, your being, the clearer your direction forward becomes. As this clarity arises, so you become more confident in all that you say and do. The Leo Sun is helping to keep it sensible. Keep sifting for gold.

Venus is retrograde in Leo. Getting in tune with who you are isn’t all about glamming up and putting on a show. That was never really you anyway. It’s more about taking time to sit quietly and figure out what’s going on in your heart – and then having the courage to express it.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

Mercury does a lot of travelling over the next month – as do you. He starts in Leo, full of hope, pride and vision. He then does his best to nail down all the practical details, as he traverses the plains of Virgo. Finally he ends up in Libra, with something resembling a finished product.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Before you get to the scary bit where you have to present your wares to the world at large, there is quite a bit of work to be done. Having envisioned your path, you have to open yourself to the inspiration required to get into action. It will come, even though you may sometimes doubt it.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

32

This is your month. Realise it early and make the most of it. Venus is around to give your libido a boost. Mercury is flying through, adding insight to your smorgasbord. Jupiter is inviting you to expand, and grow into all that you envision for yourself. Mars will be with you soon too.

Give yourself a fortnight to get into gear. With the Sun in Leo, the first couple of weeks will be ones where you get to play bridesmaid but never get to place yourself at the centre of attention. Once you are in gear, Mercury will flood you with ideas, plans and madcap schemes.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

The shiny, bright, Leo Sun helps you. The fire of Leo warms you without scalding you, the way the Aries Sun does. It gives you a sense of possibility. It makes you feel like you are ok just the way you are. It encourages you to get on with it. Work on getting your foundations down.

News from St Luke’s

By Di Ayscough

Our priest Valerie is taking a long earned holiday and while she is away we have been blessed with Rev John Corner and his wife Kay coming to lead our services. Thinking about Rev Valerie made me think of the words “Challenge and Courage”. For her holiday Valerie and her husband have flown to Central Australia to walk the Larapinta Trail, a walking journey of well over 200 kms in 14 days. While most of us are happy to travel to our holiday destinations by plane or car, Valerie and Doug are walking day after day through some amazing and beautiful outback Australian country. What a challenge! We all face challenges every day, perhaps it is finding enough money to pay the bills or provide food for our families. For others their challenge maybe to lose weight, to complete a special task or to contact a lost relative or friend. What challenges do you face? Will you find the courage to set goals to help achieve your challenges? Of course challenges can be like setting goals but finding the courage is the biggest factor. Getting started can be difficult. Have you ever thought maybe one day you will go to church or simply ask God to be part of your life? This in itself can be a major challenge which takes much courage. However if you want to take that first step and would like to step inside St Luke’s you will see that this step was definitely one in the right direction. Our Annual Fund Raising Dinner (funds used to maintain the Church) on the 28th August is already booked out. We look forward to a great night of fellowship and fun. Until next time I wish you and yours many blessings.

Solution page 35

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Sportsperson of the Month

The Sportsperson of the Month for April is local Muay Thai Fighter Zac Tilley. During July and August Zak, at 15 years of age, is in Thailand training and preparing for the 2015 World Muay Thai championships.

The Canungra Times August 2015

In December 2014, Zak competed in the Australian championships and after bringing home the gold was then selected for the Australian side. Zak has an impressive fight record with eight wins and three losses to date. Zak puts his heart and soul into his sport, training twice a day six days a week and squeezing school in between. Zak decided to go to Thailand with his trainer Jamie Tozeland for the weeks leading up to his title fight to put in some serious training! After competing at last years World titles in Malaysia and bringing home the silver, he knows just how tough the competition from around the world can be. Kids in Australia have a limited number of fights compared to other countries where you are faced with opponents with fight records into the hundreds. Zak will be stepping into the ring in Thailand determined to give it his all. He wants to come back to his country with the gold medal hoping to make his trainer, fellow gym members as well as his sponsors Bolo fightwear proud. Canungra Owls Soccer News

Canungra Bowls Club By Ray Hickson By Bren Dalby

Well, getting closer to pointy end of the season and all going quite well. Our Under 12 team pipped top of the ladder Tally Valley to a 4-3 win last Saturday under the coaching of Greg Mathers. They are a terrific young team and he is a terrific coach; Greg will be a big miss to the club next year when he whisks his equally super wife Rachel (Treasurer and Registrar) and family off to Sydney. The men have had another win since last column and a draw, so the are creeping up the ladder! Still trying to organise our Bingo night; put it high on my list now! All else fine and again thanks to all who help in any way with our club; always much appreciated.

Last Night Games!

The last ‘night‘ home games for Canungra Owls Soccer Club for the season will be the Under 15’s on 7th August at 6.15pm against Coomera and Men’s team against Pacific Pines on 12th. August at 7 pm. Everyone is invited to come and support our local teams, full canteen with fish and chips, curry etc. It would be great to have a terrific support crew for our last home games!!
