Out
A sell out crowd attended the Canungra Hotel Rodeo on 13th July with spectators enjoying action from some of the best bull and bronc riders in Australia. Over 300 competitors and a 6000 strong crowd packed the Canungra Showgrounds for the biggest one day rodeo run by the National Rodeo Association (NRA). The event was sold out with a decision to cap the crowd numbers following a sell out crowd in 2018. “We made some changes to the ticketing and general layout,” said Canungra AH&I Society President Roly Ethell. “We wanted to keep the country atmosphere. The online tickets worked well

One of the highlights for the younger competitors was the chance to compete for the Terry Sharland Memorial Buckle. Terry was integral to the Canungra Hotel

Rodeo for over 20 years and worked hard to promote the sport to juniors. The buckle went to Nash Jones who had an outstanding Canungra Rodeo, winning the Junior Breakaway Roping and Junior Steer Ride, then placed third in the Junior Bull Ride. Nash’s mother, Joanne, said he wore the buckle with pride when he flew out to the World Youth Bull Riding Finals in Abilene, Texas the week after Canungra Rodeo. “I would like to thank the Canungra Rodeo committee for sponsoring the Terry Sharland Memorial Buckle, the Sharland Family and Bill Wood for all the junior trophies,” said Joanne.

John
and
Jo
Celebrate
John and Josephine Wilson recently celebrated their milestone 60th wedding anniversary. John and Jo have lived in Canungra since 1976 and chose the township as the perfect place to raise their six boys. After 43 years in the township and 11 grandchildren later, the Wilson’s still call Canungra home and John remains the knowledgeable owner of Canungra Pharmacy, whilst Jo never misses a Canungra Craft Group catch-up! Josephine Elizabeth Stapleton met the handsome John McKellar Wilson in 1953 when she was working at the Caringbah Drug Store in Sydney. John was a serviceman in the navy at the time and Josephine fell for the tall dark sailor. Six years passed before John proposed to Josephine and they were married in the Christ Church of St Lawrence in Sydney on Saturday 25th July 1959. Josephine recalls the day fondly, reminiscing of the torrential rain that stopped the races at Randwick, but not the wedding to the man she loved. Sailing, swimming and the ocean were well loved by the family, and many would be surprised to know that John is a very accomplished sailor. Their home in Cronulla, Sydney backed onto the water and the boys spent their early childhood fishing, surfing and exploring the rock pools that surrounded their home. Family road trips to the Gold Coast resulted in the purchase of a holiday home in Budds Beach in 1964 and the subsequent move to the Boyland property ‘ADINA’ in 1976. John worked as a pharmacist in Boonah and as years passed owned chemists in Brisbane, Palm Beach and Canungra. Josephine remained a stay at home mum for her six boys, and has always been a creative soul with a love of arts and crafts. Both John and Jo are well loved, respected members of the Canungra community and after 60 years of married life their family and friends wish them many more happy years together.

Canungra Muay Thai had five fighters competing over three weekends in July, achieving amazing results. The fight blitz commenced on 6th July with the Siam Warriors Show. Canungra fighter Daniel “D9” Jones was competing for a Queensland Siam Championship belt. On 14th July, Canungra Muay Thai we competed at the ISKA Championships, Northlakes. Jesse “Bu$ta” Jones and Jared Clift both fought for QLD ISKA Championship belts. It was a weekend filled with high emotion and strong competition. Jared took to the centre ring, after meeting with his opponent on two other occasions, at one fight each. Both boys were ready to take this belt. Jared’s opponent had won a few major titles in the past, including a world title, so Jared and his trainer Dave Torrens knew this was going to be a war from the start, but went in strong. Jared followed his game plan and came away with the QLD ISKA Title Belt. Bu$ta was up next, again fighting the home team. He didn’t get the win today, but fought hard. On 20th July Matt Lorenti and Luke Clift were at Ignite the Fight, Hamilton.

A big month for Canungra MuayThai
Luke was up first, a night event with 300 people under bright lights. He took the unanimous points win. It was a great win for Luke. Matt was given an opportunity to fight an experienced fighter of over 20 fights. Trainer Dave knew Matt had been giving his fight prep 110% and Matt brought his A game, bringing home a strong and convincing win.
These fighters put in a lot of time perfecting their skills and eating well, many hours in the gym and on the road running. Thanks goes to sponsors, families and friends for supporting them. For more information regarding Canungra Muay Thai contact Dave Torrens on 0419 761 725.

Funding for Canungra District
Community groups in the Scenic Rim Electorate will share in over $168,000 of grant funding awarded through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF). Over 15 million dollars has now been allocated to community groups in the Scenic Rim Electorate through various grants since State Member, Jon Krause, was elected in 2012. On Tamborine Mountain and Beechmont, and in Tamborine Village and Canungra, five groups will share in over $120,000 in funding and Mr Krause said the money would make a huge difference to the successful local groups. “This terrific outcome would not have occurred without many hardworking volunteers giving their time and energy to complete the grant application process. It is wonderful to see that these community groups will be able to install facilities and purchase equipment to help them maintain their services.” “I commend these groups for the wonderful work they do and encourage other community groups to apply for Round 102 of the GCBF. Not-for-profit groups can apply for grants from $500 to $35,000 – applications open in mid-July and close on 31st August 2019,” Mr Krause said. To apply for the program visit: www.justice.qld.gov.au/grants or for more information contact Jon Krause’s office via email scenicrim@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone (07) 5515 1100. Local organisations to receive funding in Round 100 were: • Beechmont Tennis Club - $31,406.00 to upgrade kitchen facilities and paint the inside of the club house; • Canungra Hang Gliding Club - $35,000.00 to purchase a water bore and install kitchen facilities; • Tamborine Mountain Community Care - $9,394.00 to install blinds and purchase a BBQ; • Tamborine Mountain Men’s Shed - $12,654.80 to purchase new equipment; and • Tamborine Village Lions - $35,000.00 to construct a new storage shed.

Schools Invited to Apply for Funding
New equipment, minor building works, air conditioning or additional support to help students could soon be on the way for schools across the region, with the Australian Government providing between $1,000 and $20,000 for projects to improve the learning environment of local schools. Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said the Local Schools Community Fund offers grants to contribute to a variety of school projects and associated costs. “The Fund opened for applications on 25th July 2019 and I’d encourage all schools to think about what they could possibly do with a share of the funds,” Scott Buchholz said. “Projects could include small-scale extensions or classroom refurbishments, new computer facilities, mental health and counselling services, playground equipment, library resources, or sports facilities,” Scott Buchholz said. The Fund is open to Government, Independent and Catholic schools, eligibility conditions will apply, and proposed projects will be assessed by a local assessment committee yet to be appointed. Applications will be through SchoolsHUB – https://schools.education.gov.au/. Schools may submit one application for up to $20,000 funding for each of their campuses. Applications close on 30th September 2019.

From Kitchens to The Whole House
If you are not sure whether a job is too big or small for your builder, give Dril Construction a call. Dan and Vanessa have been operating Dril Construction for the past three years, and Dan has 30 years experience in the building industry. He started as an apprentice working for his father and has worked on residential and commercial projects, including fifteen years as a Project Manager on large high rise projects. As Dril Constructions, Dan and Vanessa are concentrating on residential and small commercial properties, with an emphasis on personalised builds and renovations. “We provide a very personal service,” said Dan, “While we are a full-service builder, we can do anything from extensions to a laundry or kitchen renovation or flat pack installations.” “We sit down and discuss the client’s needs and budget with them and work out what can best be achieved for their budget,” he said. “Of course we have a great team of subcontractors we work with when required, but we oversee the work personally so our clients know they are getting a quality job,” said Dan. Vanessa works with their clients to assist with colour consulting. She said she works with each client individually to find what they prefer and then tailors her recommendations to their needs. “I can help with paint colours, benchtops, tiles and cupboard styles and colours,” said Vanessa. “We pride ourselves on tailoring everything to what our clients need. Not everyone

with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Look Out for Wildlife There seems to be a lot of wildlife on the move at the moment. Dry conditions have brought more wallabies out onto the side of the road for grass, koalas are roaming and echidnas are looking for mates. Sadly, all this leads to a lot of carnage on the roads. Sometimes accidents are unavoidable but no matter how much of a rush you are in, please stop and see how badly injured the animal is. Unfortunately I was in this situation recently where a wallaby with a joey was hit by a car. I saw the wallaby on Beaudesert-Nerang Road near Boike Road, badly injured. As I tried to get onto the road to move the animal away, cars were still coming, not worrying that I was signalling ‘stop’ by putting my hands up in both directions. I’m not sure what they thought I was doing, but they certainly weren’t keen to stop, or to help. Two people stopped, one while the wallaby was still on the road who asked if I needed to call Wildcare, the other was El Hogan who recognised me and stopped to see if she could help. Thankfully, I had the number for the wonderful wildlife carer, Bren Dalby in my phone and called her, but the wallaby and joey passed away before she arrived. Please store the Wildcare number in your phone in case you are in this situation 5527 2444.

Myths and Facts about Funeral Services By Leigh Thompson, Thompson’s Funerals. Saying goodbye is never easy. And there’s never a good time to talk about it. To make the difficult conversation easier, let’s dispel some common misconceptions about funerals...
Funeral Directors are basically the same.
all
Fact: Not all funeral directors are created equal. Many people fall into the trap of picking the closest funeral company to where they live or one their family has used before. Comparing prices could save a lot of money without sacrificing service or quality. Also, if you value personalised service, then it definitely pays to shop around.
Funeral
insurance is a good idea.
Fact: Funeral insurance can often lead you to paying more. In order to make an insurance product profitable, companies lock you in to a policy which sees you paying year after year. And there’s often no way of breaking these contacts. You can lose your money if you cancel the policy of miss payments. Depending on how long you live you could end up paying more than you would ever spend on a funeral. The good news is there are other more cost effective alternatives to insurance. Do your homework and ask funeral industry experts for their views before you decide on any insurance.
All
funerals are pretty
standard, so planning is easy.
Fact: Whilst many people still prefer a ‘traditional’ funeral, today more than ever, people are choosing to say goodbye in more and more unique ways. In fact, the trend these days is for relaxed and reflective services rather than solemn and serious ones. As attitudes change, this is only going to grow so it makes sense to choose a funeral

director that is able to say good bye in a way that befits a unique life.
Monuments
are expensive and
unnecessary
Fact: One of the more difficult decisions people sometimes struggle with is what monument or headstone to choose. Of course, if you’re being cremated urn choice comes into it (see below). It is important the funeral director you choose has experience in monuments and is able to advise you on current trends and the costs involved so you can make an informed choice.
Flower
arrangements are
important, so the bigger the better.
Fact: Yes, flowers are important but similar to Myth#3, attitudes to flower arrangements are changing. Increasingly today, less is becoming more ... simple often works best. In many cases a single rose, flowers from your own garden, wildflowers or event potted plants on the coffin are more appropriate. Just be aware, some funeral companies have arrangements with florists so always choose a floral tribute that is meaningful for the person who is deceased and not what the funeral director wants to sell you.
You
have to have the coffin
offered by the
Funeral Director
Fact: Coffin prices vary widely. Caskets can be very expensive so be aware of sales pitches saying “of course you want the best for your loved one”. Some caskets cost in excess of $10,000, so make sure you shop around. Also, beware of coffins made of cardboard or other such material because as soon as the words environmentally friendly are used up goes the cost. The best advice is to choose the coffin that best serves your loved one without feeling guilt or pressure from the funeral director.
Cremations
are cheaper.
Fact: Another changing trend is that cremations are creeping ahead of burials. According to the Australian Financial Review, in cities cremations represent about 68% of all funerals, although the national choice between cremations and burials is 50-50. When it comes to cost, you need to shop around and consider all options so your loved one’s wishes are met within the budget you have. Urn choice must be considered here too and similar to coffins, you can be as functional or elaborate as you like. Just make sure you are aware of the price of the urn before you commit. The truth is, no one wants to even think about a funeral, let alone plan one, but working things out in advance can ease the stresses you naturally feel. Being prepared does, after all, bring peace of mind. Thompsons Funerals are located at Shop 4, Flame Tree Arcade, 16-18 Main Western Rd, North Tamborine. Restaurant Review
Fries, Salads and Dessert?
By The Full-Bodied Foodie
You know those times when you just can’t decide what to eat? When you think you should have a salad but you are really craving a deep-fried Mars Bar? When your deadline is less than two hours away and you haven’t started your food review? That’s when you call Canungra Takeaway. Previously known as Funky Dory Diner, but under new management, Canungra Takeaway has been given a fresh new look inside and out, as well as a makeover on the menu. Given I’m on a deadline and have been stress-eating all day, a quick healthyish dinner was what was needed. So crumbed whiting fillet, small serve of chips and a garden salad it was, more than I needed but less than I might have ordered had my conscience let me loose on the deep fried sandwiches and Mars Bar. The salads are made fresh daily and can be selected from the glass cabinet for as little as $3, depending on the salad. The whiting fillet was cooked to perfection and the crumb was crispy - delicious! Served in a cardboard takeaway container, the fish and chips was accompanied by tartare sauce and a slice of lemon, just what I needed! While I had to bring my order back to the office to finish off this review, there is comfortable seating there and the staff are happy to provide crockery and cutlery if you want to eat in. A minimum chips serve costs $2.50, with loaded fries from $7.50 and burgers between $7.50 and $11. Check the blackboard for daily specials. One thing I have to add about Canungra Takeaway ... the service is great. New owner, Rachel McGlashan and her staff are friendly and simply can not do enough for you. Service with a smile is what says it best. Canungra Takeaway is located at 28 Christie Street, Canungra. It is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner. For phone orders and more information, visit their Facebook page or call 5677 6684.

A group of Year 6 students were selected for reading sessions with the C&K children. Teacher Kim Baker said the Canungra State School students were amazing. “I was so proud of them,” said Kim, “They showed such kindness to the kindy kids, their expression was fantastic and it was wonderful to see confidence beaming from them.” “The Kindy teachers even commented on how great they were and they invited us back anytime, as well as having us at a scheduled time,” she said. Inter generational reading is widely accepted globally as promoting self-esteem, understanding and connection between people of different ages. While the Canungra sessions aren’t inter generational, the benefits to both the Canungra State School students and C&K children could be seen by teachers immediately.

Canungra Show Rocks with New Acts
Canungra Show will finish with a bang this year when Pink Tribute act, ‘Raise Your Glass’ perform in the closing stages of the Show. Canungra AH&I Society President, Roly Ethell, said the concert held last year was so well received by the community that it was decided to make it a regular event in the program. This year features new and upcoming acts from around South East Queensland. “Everyone enjoyed the acts last year and we are hoping we have found some outstanding performers,” said Roly. This year the music begins at 4pm with Gold Coast singer/songwriter Liv Heyer. Liv plays the guitar, ukulele, piano, and has won national and international competitions, and been globally recognised for her songwriting. She has played alongside artists such as Birds of Tokyo, Montaigne, and Cody Simpson. Playing live shows all over the Coast, Liv is well recognised for her original music. At 5pm Stage Two opens with dynamic five piece fusion The Wayward Suns. The band play a unique blend of hip-hop, roots, funk and reggae which is guaranteed to get the crowd up and dancing. Just before the fireworks, Fat Picnic will burst onto the stage with a soul-ska explosion that preaches punchy horn lines and bangin’ reggae beats - culminating in an energetic and infectious live show! Corrupted by an unquenchable lust for groove and outstanding noises, their music ranges across dub, funk, soul and ska. Simply put, there just ain’t no party like a Fat Picnic party! Fat Picnic’s highlights include playing at Caloundra Music Festival two years in a row, Splendour in the Grass and being featured heavily on Roots and All for their single “Best of You”.
Fat Picnic will perform at the Canungra Show
Fat Picnic will literally explode off the stage when the Canungra Show fireworks go off at 7.30pm. A favourite with the families, this year’s fireworks will be sure to thrill. Looking for a ‘big name’ to appear at the Show proved a little difficult, with President Roly saying the acts they wanted were a little out of the small agricultural show’s budget, so Pink and Lady Gaga were crossed off the list! However, the Society has managed to secure the ‘Raise Your Glass’ Pink. The performer behind the Australian Pink Show is Mount Isa born singer and musician Kim Boath. Kim is a powerful performer in her own right, accomplished and versatile with outstanding vocal talent. Kim is complimented by Queensland’s best musicians, the Australian Pink Show band who are consummate professionals, all with international touring experience.

All in all this guarantees a magical show spectacular, an experience of a lifetime! Ask the Physio Osteoarthritis (OA) of the Knee
Sufferers of knee pain know that nothing can kill your optimism for a recovery faster than a diagnosis of Osteoarthritis (OA). It’s not necessarily all bad news! Many of us see our bodies like cars. When a part ‘wears out’ it needs replacing with a new one or at least some sort of operative procedure. The truth is that we can often avoid surgical intervention due to the incredible ability of our bodies to adapt and change. Physiotherapists have always known that the pain and disability associated with arthritis can be mitigated with a targeted exercise program. In some cases, the pain which is attributed to OA is actually due to another, entirely treatable cause. In other cases, strengthening the muscles around the painful joint can have a significant effect by stabilising the joint and realigning it where necessary. Physiotherapists are highly skilled at identifying exactly what is causing your

pain to help you to reach the highest level of function. In fact, a recent study has shown that with targeted exercises and treatment many patients who were scheduled to have surgery were able to avoid it entirely and to
get back to enjoying their favourite physical activities. This is not to say that in some cases, surgery is the best and most effective option to improve your quality of life. Rather that there is a strong case to see a Physiotherapist at the outset to assess your knee. For exercise to be effective, you will need to have a full assessment to help to identify weak muscles and tendons, ligament damage, stiffness and the extent of joint damage so that your Physiotherapist can help you to restore movement, target strengthening and encourage healing. Your Physiotherapist can also identify any external factors that may be contributing to your pain such as unsupportive footwear, spinal misalignment, workplace ergonomics etc. So if you have had a diagnosis of OA in your knee, pop in to see if we think we can help you at the Canungra Professional Centre.

But they also have a reputation for building quality safe cars. The XC40 Inscription T4 is the smallest and most recent addition to the SUV line-up for Volvo and when it first arrived in 2018 it was praised. It won a car of the year award and is certainly helping change the way the general public look at a Volvo. It’s not just for glove wearing and hats on the parcel shelf people anymore. Design ques are something that seems to flow in the blood of the Swedes and the XC40 is no exception. Although the smallest in the range, there is a surprising amount of room inside that doesn’t show from the exterior. Although small, there is no issue getting in the XC40 and the front seats are some of the best you’ll find in any SUV. Showing that they care for their drivers, Volvo has given a wide range of adjustment for tilt and height, plus four-way electric lumbar adjustment on the driver’s seat. Inspiring The Next Generation of Scenic Rim Leaders
Canungra Times deadline for September is Tuesday 27 August
Scenic Rim civil engineer Sara Stanley recently joined city leaders from around the world, including Mayor Greg Christensen, at The Asia Pacific Cities Summit (APCS) and Mayors’ Forum in Brisbane last week. The event theme - Driving Cities through Business and Innovation - addressed four main topics including Innovation of Cities, Mobility of Cities, Liveability of Cities and Sustainability of Cities. As part of the four-day summit from 7 to 10 July 2019, The Young Professionals Program in which Sara participated has long been attracting the attention of the next generation of leaders across the Asia Pacific region. Scenic Rim resident and Civil Engineer Sara Stanley from ACS Engineers Beaudesert was among the 150 Young Professionals awarded a position to attend the forum. Humbled by her nomination by her employer ACS Engineers, Sara said, “It was a surprise to not only be nominated but also to win.” “I consider myself very lucky to be associated with a workplace that supports professional development and encourages me to embrace every opportunity,” she said. Sara also expressed gratitude to Scenic Rim Regional Council for providing her with the opportunity to attend the event and expand her professional networks. “Attending the event was an invaluable experience where I now understand that a community’s input into their city’s development and future is extremely important, including the community’s voice and how this ultimately shapes city’s planning, progress and future,” she said. “This was reiterated within the Young Professionals’ Forum and how our individual roles can make a difference.” Sara’s favourite keynote was Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph who provided great learnings about inspiring the next generation. Mayor Greg Christensen said Scenic Rim Regional Council was proud to be able to support the development of the region’s young professionals. “With 140 cities participating from all over the world, the biennial event has brought the world’s brightest professionals together in order for us as a region to learn, grow and effectively contribute to the success and sustainability of the Scenic Rim,” he said.

Council Introduces Acknowledgement Of Country Scenic Rim Regional Council marked NAIDOC Week by introducing an Acknowledgement of Country to open its fortnightly Ordinary Meetings. The first of Council’s new format Ordinary Meetings on Monday 8th July opened with prayers and Mayor Greg Christensen providing the Acknowledgement of Country in recognition of the Scenic Rim’s Indigenous heritage. “I also wish to acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands on which we meet and also that form the footprint of our great region,” he said. “I pay respects to their elders past, present and emerging and congratulate them on their continued nurture of culture.” Running from 7th to 14th July 2019, NAIDOC Week celebrated the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and provides an opportunity for the wider community to take part in activities that recognise Australia’s first nations. In March, Council moved to hold fortnightly Ordinary Meetings from July 2019 and disband its monthly Committee Meetings in line with the Refresh and Refocus of Scenic Rim Regional Council and its commitment to continuous improvement and enhanced service delivery to the community. Fortnightly Ordinary Meetings are held on the second and fourth Mondays of each month, with variations to allow for public holidays and community events. “The adoption of fortnightly Ordinary Meetings reflects Council’s commitment to continue to explore ways to be more efficient and productive to meet the needs and expectations of our community,” Cr Christensen said.

Dress: Neat casual, medals are not required. Time: 11am at D J Smith Memorial Park. Wreath Laying Ceremony: One large wreath is to be laid; however, if there is someone or a group who would like to lay a tribute, you are welcome to do so. BBQ Lunch: Following the service, a BBQ Lunch is to be held at the Canungra Services Club. Look forward to seeing you there.
D J Smith Memorial Park D J Smith Memorial Park is looking brilliant, and credit must go to Councillor Virginia West and the team from the Scenic Rim Regional Council. Plaques recognising all those conflicts that Australians have been involved in since World War II will be located on or around the present memorial, but to do this, certain protocols must be investigated. The Sub-Branch has several options on board and this stage of the upgrade will commence once all has been approved.
Lee-Enfield 303 Rifles & Bayonets On ANZAC Day, we are blessed with Defence Force Members on hand to participate as the Catafalque Party. On our other Remembrance Services, we cannot always expect the same with important courses being run at the same time. To overcome this and as a symbolic gesture, four (4) Lee-Enfield 303 Rifles with bayonets fixed could be placed at the four corners of the cenotaph in the “Rest On Arms Reverse Position”, Navy, Army, Air Force and Light Horse hats placed on top of the rifle butts. I may still possess a rifle with bayonet, and I am willing to donate my rifle for this cause. If this is the case, we will require three more. If you can assist, please contact the Sub-Branch. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Canungra’s History Edwin (Ted) Bode By Joyce Libke, Canungra & District Historical Society Edwin Bode was Canungra’s historian from the 1890’s with his paintings and from 1913 with his photography until his death in 1926. Paintings were of homesteads and landscapes - the photographs were usually of people well posed in an outdoor setting. The people, more often than not, held a small branch or a fern to help them stay still for the time it took for the glass plate in the camera do its job. Ted printed from these plates, often postcards. The chemicals he used were “super” - even after 100 years, the ones in the replica of his hut in D J Smith Park, Canungra, have not faded. This hut also contains copies of his paintings - the originals being scattered throughout the district in the homes of descendants of the original owners. His property, halfway down the Coomera Gorge Road on Mabury Creek, grew good oranges and Agnes and Ken Curtis “posing” for a photo 1914 mandarins which he brought up to Canungra on his horse, Theophalus, and his dog, Scofalot, and sold for 6 pence (5c) per dozen. In later years he lived in a hut almost opposite the Canungra Cemetery but still did the “orange”run. He was also regarded as an actor and entertainer when all entertainment had to be “home made”. In the 1970s Dave Lawton recalled the stage encounter:Ted asks “Do you know, Mr Johnston, why it is that no progress is ever accomplished at Canungra ?” Mr Johnston replies “No I do not” Ted answers “Well, I’ll tell you why - it is because there is far too much delay!” Explanation is that David Lahey was the manager of Lahey’s (sawmill) at Canungra hence D Lahey (delay). A man who suffered badly from asthma, Bode died at Dunwich in 1926. The Tamborine Shire Chairman, Edwin Franklin, with the assistance of other Councillors and public figures arranged to have him buried in the Wonglepong Cemetery and they erected a suitable headstone to honour a local identity. The replica of his hut was built in 1979 when Canungra celebrated its Centenary. On view every day that the Information Centre is open, it houses copies of some of his local paintings, also some of those original photographs.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
EAT LOCAL WEEK SUCCESS This signature event for Scenic Rim is now over and was again a resounding success with more than 14,000 visitors attending the grand finale Winter Harvest Festival at Aratula and all 90 events across the region booked out. Final figures are currently being collected as to the financial return to our region. Regional Flavours was again attended at Southbank in Brisbane over the weekend, an event which traditionally attracts more than 90,000 visitors over two days. A number of Scenic Rim accredited locavores were in attendance and selling their produce. Next up is the Ekka in a few weeks’ time and again a number of Council staff and councillors will be attending the Scenic Rim stand to promote the region and all it has to offer. If you are visiting the Ekka, make sure you come and visit us at the stand in the Agriculture Hall.

Nature’s Gems
White-throated Gerygone (Gerygone olivacea) By Melissa Whitby
INDI - 62101
Blue & White - Domestic Short Hair Female - 7 years 1 Month. $50.00 Introducing Indi, a very affectionate companion cat who has a quiet nature and enjoys gentle pats, zen time and a relaxing environment. Indi is a little unsure of herself here in the Gold Coast Rehoming Centre, but we know she will bloom in a calmer home, with no children where she is allowed her own space and is gently encouraged. Indi has a lot of love to give any home that adopts her and with nurturing she will embrace life with a big cat smile, lots of purring and confidence.
The dawn chorus of the Australian bush is a sound like no other. Many Australians are familiar with the calls of the magpies, butcher birds and kookaburras. However, there are also other sounds that are distinctive to those who have spent a lifetime in the bush. One such call is the musical notes of the White-throated Gerygone, or to many local bush people, the Bush Canary. This small bird producing a song like no other and I have had people contact me who have heard the call, marvelled at the sound and be very keen to know what sings such a beautiful song. White-throated Gerygones are very small birds, which have a bright lemon-yellow chest, red eye and grey upper parts. It can be quite hard to actually pinpoint this bird for close observation. These small birds live in a variety of habitats including gardens, paddocks, timber along watercourses, woodlands and open forest. Usually, they are seen singly or in pairs. They can be incredible active, hovering amongst hanging leaves of suitable food trees looking for food. The range of the White-throated Gerygone extends from coastal areas of northern Australia through to the southern states such as Victoria and South Australia. Some of the best views I have had of these small birds has been when I have found them nesting. The nest is circular in shape with a hooded entrance and is suspended from vegetation. Materials used to build the nest include spider’s web, bark and grass. Usually, if I find a nest I only stay for a short period of the time far back to observe the birds and then quietly move away so not to disturb them. White-throated Gerygones are common birds throughout their range in Australia. One must become familiar with their musical call to obtain views of this small bird. Once located, these birds are breathtaking and very rarely show fear if one is quiet whilst observing them. Finding these small birds is good practice for those who are ready to take their bird watching to the next level! Good luck on the hunt.
If you are a cat lover who understands that love needs time, then please come out and meet Indi today. To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough St. Luke’s has been celebrating lately. We recently celebrated the purchase of a new organ (with thanks again to the Bendigo Bank Canungra). We have also just celebrated a great evening of food, friendship and fun to raise $1,100 towards our essential funds to maintain St Luke’s buildings. Locals, Bill and Sonya, members of the congregation, celebrated winning the major raffle prize, a two-night stay with meals at O’Reilly’s. We all wanted to win that great prize, but there can only be one winning ticket. There is always next year! Yes, I will purchase tickets again next year! We celebrated Songs on Sunday, a chance for the local community to enjoy our new organ, beautifully played by Anne King and some favourite songs specially requested for the occasion. A hot cuppa and scones finished the very enjoyable afternoon. We also celebrated our Priest, Rev Valerie Hoare’s special birthday. This however brings a change for St. Luke’s because such a birthday has meant Valerie has now retired. While we celebrate and give thanks for Valerie’s dedication to St. Luke’s over the past seven years, we are saddened to see Valerie and her husband Doug leave us. However, we know God will provide for our needs. We will welcome in the interim a locum priest, Rev David Lunniss and through our faith we know a new priest will soon come to join our celebration of life. While working outside to provide the food for our recent fund-raising dinner, I was very excited to have a local gentleman call in to say how wonderful it was to see the lights on and lots happening. He said, “Never let the lights go out at St. Luke’s” Those inspiring words from a passer-by are reason for celebration! The lights will always burn brightly at St. Luke’s for the people of Canungra. Let us always celebrate our many blessings in this community.

Our trivia for Fragile X on Friday 19th July was a great success, raising over $600 for a great cause. Thanks to Kathy Morris for organising and liaising with the Fragile X crew and to all those who helped and attended; a fun night was had by all. Foodworks once again provided us with the winning hampers! Lots of others donated raffle
prizes so there was a great raffle table! Our next trivia will be on Friday 30th August $5 per person with maximum six at a table … and of course our raffle! BYO drinks and nibblies and if you don’t have a team please still come and we just swap and shuffle !!
