Budget To Drive Local Economy And Jobs Growth
Key infrastructure projects and initiatives to help drive the regional economy and generate local jobs growth headline Scenic Rim Regional Council’s $98.91 million Budget for 2019-20. Mayor Greg Christensen said the Budget continued to build on Council’s core commitments to sustainable service delivery, its strategic focus on the renewal of public spaces and support for employment growth while maintaining overall ratepayer revenue increases at just 1.8 per cent in line with the national Consumer Price Index. Council’s 2019-20 Budget features $13.13 million for initiatives under its Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program with $10.72 million, including a Queensland Government contribution of $5 million for the expansion of the Beaudesert Business Park in Enterprise Drive. “I am excited to be able to pursue this project as it offers a strong opportunity for the activation of new and novel employment prospects for both our existing workforce to escape from the commuter trap and for our young people as they move from high school,” Cr Christensen said. “This 11-hectare business park will be an expansion of the existing business park
and when fully developed will be a significant contributor to our regional economy, supporting larger scale enterprises at the Bromelton State Development Area.” The Beaudesert Business Park is a landmark project that will provide added momentum to the revitalisation of the Beaudesert Town Centre which has been allocated $1.75 million in Council’s 2019-20 Budget. The Budget also reflects Council’s commitment to its focus on the upgrade and renewal of key infrastructure, with $16 million allocated to the Scenic Rim’s network of roads and bridges which help to drive the regional economy. “This will include 13 road projects and eight bridge replacements, some of which will be possible only with matching funding from the Australian Government,” Cr Christensen said. Council’s $36.70 million capital works program in 2019-20 includes $11.98 million for roads, $530,000 for drainage, $754,000 for footpaths, $4.08 million for bridges, $1.25 million for Council facilities and, $13.13 million for the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program. Council’s operational expenditure of $80 million, including depreciation, provides
for its wide range of services and community facilities in addition to environmental programs, community grants, grants for sporting and active recreational groups and funding for the Be Healthy and Active program to be extended from a six-month program to run throughout the year in 2019-20. “Council has budgeted to collect a net amount of $55 million through rates and charges and for most rates categories has capped minimum rate increases to just one per cent. This is consistent with Council’s objective to slow the increase in its minimum rate threshold, particularly for principal place of residence and rural principal place of residence properties. “For an owner-occupied residence on the minimum general rate of $1,215 this represents an increase of $12 annually or 23 cents per week,” Cr Christensen said. “Around 32 per cent of residential properties, including principal and non-principal place of residence, will not experience an increase in general rates in 2019-20. The Rate in the Dollar for principal place of residence properties will reduce a further 3.78 per cent which is back to the lowest value for five years.”

Businesses Must Prepare For Waste Levy
Scenic Rim Regional Council has been working with businesses across the region to raise awareness of commercial impacts associated with the introduction of the Queensland Government’s waste levy on 1st July 2019. Mayor Greg Christensen said information about the new charges for commercial waste has been provided directly to businesses which are known generators of commercial waste and to users of Council’s waste facilities. “As everyone will be aware, the Queensland Government has implemented a zero waste strategy for the state which includes the introduction, on 1st July, of the waste levy of $75 per tonne on commercial operators disposing of waste to landfill,” he said. “This is part of a new strategy across Queensland to increase recycling and the recovery of resources, wherever possible, to reduce the volume of waste going into landfill. “It is important for the community to realise these charges have been mandated by the Queensland Government and will have an impact on a range of businesses as they
Page 6
apply to solid waste, commercial and industrial waste and construction and demolition waste.” While the levy will impact commercial gate fees at waste facilities, it will not directly affect residents who generate domestic household waste. In addition to Council gate fees, the levy rate of $75 per tonne will apply to general mixed commercial waste, including treated timber, sawdust and shavings. Fees of $155 per tonne and $105 per tonne respectively will apply to the disposal of materials classed as Regulated Waste Category 1 and Regulated Waste Category 2 under the Environmental Protection Amendment Regulation 2018. The fee structure for vehicles delivering waste to Council’s facilities commences at $12 for a commercial car. The levy portion of these fees is based on the weight measurement criteria allocation determined by the Queensland Government. Council has been working to provide information to businesses on how they could reduce their disposal costs.
The Canungra Times - July 2019
“Good separation of recyclables from general or ‘co-mingled’ waste and not presenting both in a single load at a waste facility is a key to reducing cost,” Cr Christensen said. “Smaller operators delivering waste in utilities or trailers are encouraged to stockpile materials until they have a full load to achieve best value for their disposal fees.” “The levy aims to encourage Queenslanders to reduce waste and reuse and recycle more materials so that only waste that cannot be recovered is sent to landfill,” Cr Christensen said. “I acknowledge there is clearly some financial pain in the waste levy for commercial operators, however I believe the longterm goal to be more responsible stewards of the environment is widely shared across our Scenic Rim community which has been keen to embrace recycling.” Commercial operators can contact Council’s Waste Services team on 5540 5111 for specific details on how the waste levy will impact their business.
Army Assistance to Youth Program
Each year at Kokoda barracks, Canungra, soldiers from the Australian Army’s Land Warfare Centre assist the Queensland Police Service in an initiative called Project Booyah. This program is facilitated by the local Police Citizens Youth Welfare Association to empower disconnected youths (ages 14 – 16 Years) and help them re-engage with their families, the community and the education system. The program aims to reduce the kids’ involvement in anti-social behaviour, substance misuse, self-harm and crime. In May 2019, Project Booyah joined forces with the Land Warfare Centre (LWC) to help the kids develop an understanding of community values, character, teamwork and leadership. The development days are delivered by staff and instructors from LWC and involve interactive theory and physical group activities. In the morning, the Booyah kids have discussions with Defence members from similar backgrounds who have overcome some of life’s obstacles and are now inspirational leaders. Discussions also centre on teamwork, leadership and society’s

expectations. The main focus of the morning activities is to be relatable and provide the Booyah participants with a general

understanding of the Australian Army’s core values of Courage, Initiative, Respect and Teamwork. The second half of the day gets physical and involves some of the Army’s Physical Training Instructors (PTIs). The PTIs put the youth through a number of physical and critical thinking team activities and finish off the day with the renowned Kokoda Barracks Confidence Course (Obstacle Course) and water tower. The Confidence Course exposes the Booyah kids to physical challenges where they can put into practice those recently learnt core values in a unique environment that will bond them into the future. The success of the character building and leadership day is attributed to the Defence members, who are brave enough to tell their personal stories, and the staff from LWC with special mention to the PTIs. By drawing on their own professional and personal experiences they provide the Booyah kids with new skills and knowledge that builds their confidence and plants the seed that ‘leadership starts from within’.

Scenic Rim Regional Council Management and Councillors at the Budget Launch
$1 Million Deficit Due to Accounting Adjustments Two significant accounting adjustments have impacted Scenic Rim Regional Council’s 2019-20 Budget. Council considers the resulting deficit of $1 million, when balanced with other factors, presents the best outcome for the community at this time. Visibly emotional at the Council Budget launch, Mayor Greg Christensen said changes in asset valuations and a reversal of the accounting treatment for road
re-sheeting had produced a negative nett effect of $3 million and an overall $1 million Budget deficit for 2019-20. “Scenic Rim Regional Council’s 2019-20 Budget was prepared in the context of challenging conditions currently being experienced in parts of the community due to drought declarations and residual effects from significant weather events,” he said. “We could have cut programs or had additional rates increases, however I believe our

decision to accept the deficit achieves the right balance. “These adjustments reflect accounting best practice and compliance with Australian accounting standards. “In any case, we expect to return to surplus in the 2020-21 financial year, and savings achieved through the ongoing work of Council’s Refresh and Refocus program will help to bridge that deficit as the 2019-20 year progresses.”
Accounting Adjustments the Cause of Council’s $1 Million Deficit Council’s prior valuations, undertaken in 2013-14, were based on significant underrecognition of road assets, both in length and width. There have been significant increases in unit rates for valuation calculations of most asset classes, including roads and bridges, since that time. The change in unit rate, particularly for roads, has been driven by design changes to match the durability demands for modern high pressure tyre systems used in freight movements. “As a result of improvements in asset management, which have given us an accurate profile of all of our roads, our latest asset revaluation has required a substantial increase to recognise road assets not previously recorded in our valuation,” Cr Christensen said. “The combined impact has resulted in an increase to our Fair Asset Valuation of roads, bridges and drainage of some $142.59 million and subsequently increased depreciation costs of $3 million in the 2019-20 Budget. “Whilst in the short term this will cause some negative flow-on impacts through

increased depreciation expense, we believe that adopting this approach satisfies our accounting and legislative responsibilities and properly recognises the challenges we face in managing our significant asset base.” To maintain accurate data, Council will revise its revaluation schedule to occur at least every three years. The second budget impact resulted from the reversal of a decision made by Council in 2010 to treat road re-sheeting as a capital expense. Following a review by the Queensland Audit Office and Council’s Audit and Risk Committee, this will now appear as an operating expense, as a proper and accurate accounting practice consistent with other local governments within Queensland. “This change in accounting methodology will not alter the substantial amount of work we do in road re-sheeting across our region. However, it does have a significant impact, increasing operating expenses in the 2019-20 Budget,” Cr Christensen said. “These changes are further evidence for our community that this Council is prepared, and remains committed, to improving the
accuracy and integrity of all aspects of its operations. “This Budget shows the benefits of robust planning and analysis, clarity of prioritisation through strategic focus and commitment to sustainable service delivery and good governance.”

Family
Designs
Architect Chris Collier and his partner Bronwyn Edwards run their small family architectural practice out of a studio on their property on Beechmont. Their aim is to deliver a personal, high-quality design service from a location that meets their lifestyle goals. After two decades of working for other practices, Chris founded Resonance d+a in 2014 out of the spare bedroom of their 1970s West End apartment in inner-city Brisbane. The practice quickly completed a range of projects from small domestic renovations to large commercial developments, but with a focus on educational architecture. With a passion for environmentally sensitive and socially responsive design, Resonance d+a soon built up a repeat client base including universities and schools, allowing the business to move to office space in West End with full time and part time employees. After the birth of their first child, Bronwyn was diagnosed with a rare and progressive autoimmune liver disease and it was the wake-up call the pair needed to bring forward their dream of moving to acreage in the country. Bronwyn left her engineering career alongside their inner-city lifestyle and started working with Chris to run the family business from their home on the picturesque Beechmont plateau. The practice now focuses on residential and educational architecture, with a client base moving closer to their new home. Coupled with a strong network of other businesses, including interior designers, project managers, engineers and other small

architectural practices, Resonance d+a has immediate access to specialist resources when required without the burden of maintaining full time employees. This flexible approach is critical to maintaining a small business which services varied clients. The small family business model also allows for the attention to detail and director involvement that is lacking with larger architectural firms, and it’s what keeps their clients coming back.
Part of the attraction of moving to a house in the country was the space for Chris to start flexing his creative muscles and experimenting with new ideas, slowly transforming spaces in their house and property. The other main bonus? Time traditionally spent commuting the pair instead gets to spend enjoying country life with their young family – gardening, beekeeping and learning to bake a mean sourdough. New Type of Dog Showing Debuts
Last year a Dog Section was added to the Canungra Show to celebrate the 80th Anniversary and a tail-wagging good time was had by all, so much so that the Show Committee has decided to hold dog classes again in 2019. In 2018, dogs and owners alike enjoyed the opportunity to have some fun in the Moriarty Park show ring. After their competition the four-legged friends were given a special tag and were welcome to wander around the main show ground with their owners and families. This type of ‘recreational’ dog showing is new and different to mainstream dog shows in that there are no championship points and the atmosphere is fun and supportive. Most importantly, the judge is friendly and helpful while you are in the ring so there is no stress or pressure to perform. It is an ideal platform for children who are interested in showing or for people with dogs that haven’t been shown before. Beautiful trophies and sashes were awarded to the Champion Mixed-breed and Junior Handlers. The Purebreds competed for the Canungra Cup, a perpetual trophy donated by the sponsors of this event, Canungra Veterinary
2018 Canungra Cup winner Emily Johns and her Golden Retriever Marlow, with Vanessa Jamieson.
Surgery. The events are for both adults and children with the emphasis on getting dogs out of the yard to come and spend a day with their family. Everyone had fun and learnt a few new things too. Crowd favourites were the Puppy Sweepstakes and Pimp My Pooch (entrants have 10 mins to deck out their dog
with supplied costume items). A huge effort was made by the competitors in the Cutest Couple and Fancy Dress. Dog Classes will be held from 9am on Saturday 24th August at Moriarty Park. Check the Canungra Show program available in Canungra stores now or visit the website at www.canungrashowsociety.org.

A Call for Understanding
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Eating Local Eat Local Week has been running for many years in the Scenic Rim and it was great to see so many events in Canungra and Beechmont this year. The media attention the event has gained was reflected in the number of visitors to the region during that time. The last weekend of June was crazily busy in town with the Canungra Food, Beer and Music Festival livening up the street, even a few showers couldn’t keep people away. It is great to see local businesses doing well and people supporting not only the food trucks from out of town on the day, but also the retail shops and local cafes and food outlets. Although these days can cause some angst for local shops, there is a worry that food trucks take away custom from the locals, it is good to remember that the visitors to town will usually come back, tell their friends about Canungra and Beechmont and support your local store when they return. It is always beneficial to support local businesses where you can, the more grassroots, the better. Who doesn’t love to grab some potatoes from Dale Mahony’s little store/shed on Coburg Road, or some local honey from the Visitor Information Centre or Blackbird Country Pies? Scenic Rim Regional Council should be congratulated on the job they have done organising and promoting our region through Eat Local Week this year.

Dear Madam Editor, I know what I am writing will seem entirely trivial to many but to myself and many others it is an important issue. This issue would be some members of the general public’s fascination bordering on obsession of the lives of the LGBTQI community. One would have thought that since the approval of the same-sex marriage laws this obsession might have lessened, sadly this hasn’t happened. People are still concerned that our same-sex marriages are denigrating to heterosexual marriage. Funny thing about that, I’ve been with my husband now for 11 years and married for 18 months, a relationship that has outlived many heterosexual ones. Apparently our way of life is all about dragging children away molesting them and brain washing them to become like us. Well in all honesty more children are sexually abused by a close ‘straight’ family member than by a random LGBTQI community member. Recently, Gillette razors copped a lot of flack on social media because of a campaign they ran of a teenage transgender male being taught to shave by his father. Some people say this is child abuse; that this brave young lad was being forced into playing a role, that he was being manipulated by his parents. Other comments wanted to know if he was going to shave his private parts too or what his breasts look like. I was disgusted with some of the comments some too crude to type here. I copped a fair bit of abuse from people for voicing my support of this advertisement on social media. I didn’t see a transgender male, I saw a brave inspirational young man being taught something natural by his father. I beg people, please think before sprouting off narrow minded rhetoric that you believe is right. No two people are the same and each of us live our lives the best we can. Being a transgender young person can be a highly emotional and anxious time and many are drawn to self harm and even suicide due to the words of others. So I repeat, please think before opening your mouth and making detrimental comments. Regards, Christopher Duncan

Reconstruction A Milestone In Road To Recovery
The completion of two Scenic Rim bridges damaged extensively during ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie represents another major milestone in the Scenic Rim’s road to recovery. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said the completion of Jerome Bridge on Upper Coomera Road at Ferny Glen and nearby Bennett Bridge, which replaces Bennett Crossing on Illinbah Road, will provide greater resilience to future extreme weather events. “Two years after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie dealt a devastating blow to the region with widespread flooding, the Scenic Rim’s journey to recovery is almost at an end,” he said. “Scenic Rim was one of eight Queensland councils hardest hit by this extreme weather event which impacted large sections of our local road and bridge infrastructure, including Jerome Bridge and Bennett Crossing.” “Once a culvert, Bennett Crossing has been reconstructed as a bridge and, along with Jerome Bridge, will be more resilient to future flooding.” More than 500,000 tonnes of gravel have helped to pave the Scenic Rim’s road to recovery. More than three quarters of the Scenic Rim’s network of gravel roads were damaged during the flooding and all of this repair work has now been completed. Cr Christensen said the forecast final cost of the reconstruction effort was $61 million, including Council funding of $3.4 million to the flood recovery program with further contributions yet to be finalised.
Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen (right) and Cr Virginia West mark the completion of Jerome Bridge with Member for Wright Scott Buchholz.
“We have not just recovered, we have made great improvements to our roads, thanks to the joint funding from the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments and Council’s contribution,” he said. “We are committed to ensuring the best value to our ratepayers through our investment in infrastructure that provides the impetus for the ongoing growth and economic development of our region and stands the test of time.” Federal Assistant Minister for Road Safety and Freight Transport, Scott Buchholz, welcomed the progress of the work and the benefits for local commuters.
Servicing Scenic Rim and Gold Coast
“This region was smashed by Cyclone Debbie, all three levels of Government came together and delivered millions in infrastructure investment to get the region back up and running again. “The cooperation of the Commonwealth and Queensland Governments ensured projects such as the Jerome Bridge reconstruction and Bennett Crossing upgrade could go ahead. Mr Buchholz said he was pleased with the progress and thanked locals for their patience during construction and reiterated the importance of these local projects.

Winter Market Creates Opportunities
The Winter Solstice Market at The Blue house gave new market stall holders the chance to showcase their products in a friendly, relaxed environment. Nicole Krause, who also organised the Autumn Equinox Market in March, was on hand to help new stallholders settle in. “We were really happy with the day,” said Nicole, “It is a great venue and a very relaxed vibe, everyone is happy to be here and helping each other out.” Stallholder Waimarie Joy was at Canungra for the first time. Her range of natural beauty products were inspired by a project she undertook at Silkwood Independent School. Waimarie Joy developed Clay’d Superfood Facemasks which are specially blended to nourish the skin and help in different skin benefits. “We had to find a mentor to who help us explore something we are passionate about,” said Waimarie, “I was lucky to find a naturopath who helped me a lot in developing my products and my brand,” she said.
Ray Adolphus, Kylie Anthony and Abi McAndless at the Winter Solstice Markets.
“I’ve always been passionate about health, wellness and the environment and these were the things that were most important to me in developing my products.” Waimarie primarily sells her products from her web site waimariejoy.com but the 18 year old Beechmont local was excited to be part of the Winter Solstice Market. There were a range of crafts, art and plants on offer. Magician Dan the Magic Man also kept the crowd amused with card tricks and a variety of magic displays throughout the day. Nicole said they hoped to host markets at The Blue House every three months, with the next pencilled in for September this year. “We would all like to see the Markets continue to give small local businesses and
emerging cottage industries the opportunity to showcase their products,” said Nicole.

Following A Passion for Cycling and Family
Tim Wakeman is a man following his passion. A keen cyclist, Tim worked in the construction industry for over 20 years, but wanted a better work/life balance. “I could see there was a real need for a bicycle repair and maintenance business in the area,” said Tim. “I understood the problems people in the Scenic Rim had getting their bikes to a repair shop in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast when they have to work, and of course I was still working, so I started working on the business after hours,” said Tim. “I offered an after hours pick up and drop off service and repaired the bikes at night and on the weekend.” Today, Tim operates Direct Service Bicycle Maintenance full-time, adding new bicycle sales to the business and operating from his home at Cedar Vale. “I can repair everything from a bike with a flat tyre to high end road/mountain bikes and electric bikes,” he said. Tim prides himself on giving customers outstanding service. For one customer, a last minute decision to ride in the MS 50 km had his in need of some urgent attention. Tim collected the bike on a Wednesday, dropped it back Thursday and the customer completed a training ride Saturday and had success on Sunday with the MS 50 km ride completed. The business is a family affair, with Tim’s daughter designing the logo and his 13 year old son, Ashley also helping out. “Ashley has Down Syndrome and I have always had the idea of starting a business that will give him a future as well,” said Tim.
Ashley and Tim Wakeman
“I incorporated the Down Syndrome colours of blue and yellow into my logo people who know Ashley and I always know what is behind it when they see it,” said Tim. At the beginning of 2019, Tim began to volunteer at Yarrabilba Community Centre with Traction, a not for profit organisation that empowers young people by engaging them in projects at school or through other community groups. Tim teaches 10 -15 year olds to pull bicycles apart and rebuild them.

The Canungra Times - July 2019
“A lot of these kids are disengaged with school and the community,” said Tim, “ I can see a real difference in their attitude and engagement with us over the weeks we work with them.” Tim is happy to collect donated bicycles on behalf of Traction for young people to work on. For enquiries and more information contact Tim on 0404 470 110 or like Direct Service Bicycle Maintenance on Facebook.

Restaurant Review
Great Chinese, in the Most Unexpected of Places By The Full-Bodied Foodie I have to confess, my favourite places to eat are not high end restaurants in big cities. Not even trendy looking places anywhere - far too out of place in those establishments these days! My absolute favourite places to eat are those little restaurants, the ones with plastic tables, where you walk in and you’re never sure what it is going to be like. The service is often a little bit ordinary. Friendly, but maybe a bit slow, or just a kid who hasn’t had a lot of experience and is a bit shy. The delight is when I find somewhere like this that has really good food at a great price. Which is exactly what I’ve found just down the road at Golden Lor Yarrabilba. I’ve ventured in there a few times now, always with friends from Canungra who are hankering for something we don’t have in town here, and every time the food is amazing. Not just OK, but amazing Chinese in a place I was not expecting to find it. The Mongolian Beef is one of my favourites but the most outstanding dish is definitely the Honey Chicken - probably the best I’ve ever tasted. There is a good range of vegetarian dishes available as well as a large range of beef, lamb, pork and seafood dishes. Golden Lor operates primarily as takeaway restaurant, but there are a few tables for people to dine in. If it is atmosphere you are looking for, maybe go with the takeaway option and eat at home. The food is prepared quickly so it is definitely a good option for people who work in Brisbane and are able to stop in on their way home. Prices are very easy on the pocket, with family packs between $45 - $75. Priced for the number of people to serve, the family pack has all the favourites - Spring rolls, Prawn Chips, Lemon Chicken, Honey Prawn, Mongolian Beef, etc and of course a Large Special Fried Rice. We ordered two of these one night to feed about 12 people and honestly could not finish all the food. On that occasion the bill ended up the princely sum of $15 each! They also have lunch specials available for only $8.50 each. Golden Lor is located at Shop 7, 16-22 Yarrabilba Drive, Yarrabilba. It is open seven days a week for lunch and dinner, and is BYO, however there is a bottle shop conveniently located next door. For bookings and more information, visit their Facebook page or call 5608 1011.

Scenic Rim Regional Council has adopted a policy and procedure for the use of body cameras to be worn by key staff and contractors when engaging with members of the public. In late 2017 and early 2018, Council conducted trials of body cameras worn by staff in delivering waste, health and compliance services and will introduce use of the devices to maintain a safe working environment and enhance operational outcomes. An interim policy and procedure for the management, ethical, lawful and efficient use of body-worn cameras was approved following trials by staff in 2017. The new Body Worn Camera Policy and Procedure adopted by Council also addresses issues of accountability, and the management and secure storage of data ahead of the introduction of body-worn cameras by Council staff and contractors. It complies with legal requirements including the Criminal Code, Invasion of Privacy Act and Information Privacy Act. Notices will be displayed in prominent locations and entry points on Council premises to alert visitors and members of the public to the use of body-worn cameras by Council staff. As a courtesy, employees wearing body cameras will inform members of the public when recording is taking place. It is important to note that use of the cameras will be triggered to record specific activities and will not be used to record an employee’s entire shift. Recorded data may be used by Council to respond to incidents of abuse or violence by members of the public towards Council staff in the course of their duties and to gather evidence for compliance matters. Where an incident occurs and is reported to Queensland Police Service, data can be requested by police relating only to that incident. Data collected may also be used for staff training and performance coaching, however it will be stored securely and the privacy of anyone recorded through the use of body-worn cameras will be protected.

Holden Arcadia LTZ-V
Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The growth of the Australian SUV market continues and is one that all manufacturers are really trying to get their claws in. None more so than Holden who keep throwing cars at the category. Come late 2018 the addition of the boldlooking, comfortable, and well-built sevenseater Holden Acadia joined the line-up. Made and converted to right-hand drive in GM’s Spring Hill plant, Tennessee, the Acadia replaces, thankfully, the Captiva and is available in three trim grades – LT, LTZ and LTZ-V with two drivelines, either frontwheel drive or all-wheel drive. The look is not for everyone as the Acadia was never designed for Australia. This is the second series of the American GMC Acadia and was chosen by Holden as it fits Australian conditions. Though many don’t like it, I think it is a wonderful looking SUV. There is no escaping how big the Acadia is; because it’s big both in and out. It is a seven-seater with enough room in the third row to comfortably seat two adults. It feels wide when in the driver’s seat and there is so much room all around that even the tallest of people would find comfort.
There is a mix of leather and plastics in the LTZ-V and for a change the interior actually has a really nice feel and look about it. Having an 8” enhanced driver information display, dual-panel sunroof, Tri Zone Climate Control and so many more features, the driver and passengers are always informed and comfortable. The engine – a 3.6-litre petrol V6 – mated to GM’s nine-speed auto, has an output of 231kW@6600rpm and a tidy 367Nm@5000rpm. With a petrol engine

Being an SUV and not a people mover, you still get to keep some respect with your friends and move the whole family around. Although Holden is on a bit of shaky ground right now, it is hard to walk past this SUV. Holden Acadia LTZ-V 2WD from $63,490 plus on-roads.

More to CWA than Tea and Scones
The Wonglepong Branch of the CWA held their Showcase event at the Hall in Wonglepong last month. The Open Day was a great opportunity for members of the public to find out more about what the QCWA does and how it operates. Since 1922, the QCWA has been about women from all over Queensland coming together for many different reasons, whether it is about meeting new people, making new friends, learning new skills or getting involved in the community. Whatever the reason, it is friendship and the overall desire to help others that has banded the women of this organisation together. The QCWA vision is simple: for the women of Queensland to come together to support communities, while celebrating their interests and forging friendships in a respectful and caring environment. This is achieved by advocating and providing opportunities for women centering around education, health and community throughout every phase of a woman’s life. Recently, the QCWA has launched a ‘Healthy Kitchens’ campaign, aimed at educating people about healthy eating and promoting healthy recipes. QCWA runs the Public Rural Crisis Fund. As at 30th May 2019 over $10,615,617 has helped 4820 families. The support is in the form of grocery vouchers, store credit or being able to pay some overdue accounts e.g. electricity, phone, doctor. Every dollar that is donated to the Fund goes directly to those in need.

One Million Trees Program Continues To Grow Scenic Rim Regional Council has adopted a new policy to improve the delivery of a program which aims to plant one million native trees throughout the region by 2025. Council’s One Million Trees Program Policy reflects the shared Community Plan vision for the Scenic Rim as a region known for its spectacular scenery and natural environment and supports the preservation and enhancement of the region’s unique biodiversity. Mayor Greg Christensen said the program comprised four initiatives - Rural Trees, River Trees, Community Trees and Habitat Trees and has seen the planting of more than 300,000 trees by schools, community groups, local organisations and rural landowners since its commencement in 2015. “This financial year the One Million Trees Program has received more than 90 requests for plants between the Rural, Community, River and Habitat initiatives and in total more than 47,000 trees have been provided under the program and partnerships in 2018-19,” he said. “River Trees is the newest initiative and proving popular throughout the region with private property owners requesting plants which achieve bank stabilisation and protect valuable topsoil for agricultural uses, helping to maintain water quality. The restoration of riparian vegetation also helps to establish corridors for native wildlife. “Interest in the River Trees initiative is expected to grow along with increased public awareness of river systems and initiatives being undertaken by organisations including the Council of Mayors South East Queensland.” Council’s 2019-20 Budget includes $50,000 to support the One Million Trees Program in the next financial year. “Planting just one tree is a simple way to enhance our environment, however planting one million trees has the ability to create real environmental change,” Cr Christensen said. “Although our region is home to many large national parks, much of the native habitat in the Scenic Rim is found on private property so maintaining our natural values is very much a partnership between Council and members of the community.”
RSL News By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch
State Congress
This year’s RSL State Congress and Annual General Meeting (AGM) was held on Saturday, 22nd June 2019 at the Royal International Convention Centre. 192 Sub-Branches from all over Queensland gathered and 300 delegates were in attendance. Unfortunately, the main topic of the AGM, the new draft constitution failed to be approved for the third year in a row, missing out this year by one vote. Overall, the congress was well attended, ran smoothly and some very good information came out of it. Information that will enhance the advancement of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch and the wider QLD RSL community well into the future.

Veterans Day 2019
Last year at Canungra, Vietnam Veterans Day was renamed ‘Vietnam and Veterans Day’. The reason for the change was to invite those veterans who since joined the Australian Defence Forces following the Vietnam War to share a day where they could remember those they served with, who died in the service of their country. This year, it is planned to go one step further with a relaxed service at D J Smith Memorial Park, followed by a BBQ lunch and refreshments at the Canungra Services Club. Canungra’s ‘Vietnam and Veterans Day’ will be held on Saturday, 17th August 2019 with the following: • Dress: Neat casual, medals are not required. • Time: Commencing 11am. Please check the August edition of Canungra Times for further information about the day. I look forward to seeing and sharing the company of veterans from Vietnam to Afghanistan conflicts on this day.

The Queensland Ballet is returning to the Scenic Rim to reprise its popular fourday dance camp during the winter school holidays. Students from five to 16 years of age will be kept on their toes learning the three main dance techniques of ballet, jazz and contemporary in a program catering for all levels of skill and experience. Scenic Rim Regional Council is featuring the dance camp in its July school holiday line-up after calls for an encore following the Queensland Ballet’s program in Beaudesert in October last year. This year, Tamborine Mountain will take centre stage with the dance camp to be held at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre from Tuesday 9th July to Friday 12th July from 9am to 3pm. Since its inception in 1960, Queensland Ballet has been dedicated to the pursuit of artistic excellence, dance education and the innovative presentation of classical repertoire. A vibrant and creative company connecting people and dance across Queensland, its vision is the development of future artistic talent. Participants in the dance camp will be split into two groups - juniors five to 10 years of age and seniors 11 to 16 years of age. No minimum dance experience is required as all levels of expertise will be catered for. Payment of $180 per child for the four-day camp, which includes a souvenir t-shirt, is required in advance, with tickets available online through the liveatthecentre.com.au website. Participants need to bring a drink bottle, morning tea and lunch and wear clothing suitable for physical activity. With limited places that will fill quickly, early bookings are encouraged for this headline holiday activity. Book online through www.liveatthecentre.com.au or phone 5540 5050

Turning Canungra Pink was started by a local resident in 2011, herself a Breast Cancer Survivor. Since then it has become a month long event, decorating the town in pink for awareness and raising money throughout businesses and community events all run by volunteers. Its a great effort for a small town! Michael Pate and Wendy Gibb in Sons of Matthew
Sons of Matthew By Joyce Libke, Canungra & District Historical Society In 1949, a Charles Chauvel film Sons of Matthew, inspired by local history was released. Most of the filming was done in the hinterland - especially in the then Beaudesert Shire. During the wet, cold winter of 1947, for three weeks he brought his cast and crew to Canungra to film a night campfire scene in a small patch of scrub on the East bank of Canungra Creek, six kilometres south of Canungra. As the picture and sound were recorded at the same time, and there was no electricity available, Chauvel hired a large generator and set it up 500 metres down the road to power the large lights required on the ‘night set’, thus eliminating its noise. The Curtis family went down most evenings to watch and they soon learned to stay still and quiet when Mrs Chauvel “clacked her board” saying “Scene 4 - take 3 - ACTION!” One evening, the scene was a conversation at the campfire between Cathy (Wendy Gibb) and Terry (John Unicombe). As was normal, they rehearsed – and rehearsed – and rehearsed. Shane (Michael Pate) then had to make his entry several times before the Chauvels were ready to film – again – and again –and again. Walking home across the frosty paddock I could recite the dialogue perfectly! As the filming continued this small girl’s ambition of becoming a film star was waning. The final straw came the night that Shane’s thick black hair was reflecting too much light for the camera to cope with. Mrs Chauvel picked up a black bean pod, filled it with good scrub soil, walked over to Shane and rubbed it in his hair! To honour this work of the Chauvels 70 years ago, there will be a screening of Sons of Matthew by the TMPA (Tamborine Mountain Progress Association) at the Zamia Theatre on Tamborine Mountain on Saturday 27th July 2019 at 2pm. Ric Chauvel Clarlsson, the Chauvel’s grandson, will be there to introduce the film. All are welcome to come to share memories or learn details of a local cultural event of the past.

Skatepark Reno Lodging Your First Tax Return By Bren Dalby, Two lovely and enthusiastic young men came along to the Moriarty Park meeting in June and a proposal for an upgrade to the skate park was very impressively presented. The improvement of the skate park has been on the backburner of our list of projects for some time but the enthusiasm and ideas that these boys exuded has led us to ‘get on with it’! We have the offer from one of the boy’s Fathers to get involved and start getting the info and permission requirements from council together. Please if anyone thinks they would like to get involved in this project contact us at Moriarty Park - bren.dalby@bigpond. com. It will be a big job and relatively costly, and will need more people to be actively involved to make it happen, but we have a little over $2,000 sitting waiting for just this project that was raised many years ago when, in conjunction with Canungra State School, we held a fundraising drive ... then nothing was ever done due to the afore mentioned ‘enthusiasm’ fizzling out and a spate of vandalism in the area that put the Moriarty Park committee’s nose out of joint a bit. I trust that we can work with the youngsters who enjoy skating and promote their respect of not only this facility but respect for property and people in general, whilst creating a great ‘activity centre’ for themselves and others. These same young men, together with Dad, have volunteered their time and efforts to cook a sausage sizzle at the markets whenever they are able to, and FoodWorks as part of their contribution to the skatepark funding project will supply the sausages. They are also going to present the skatepark funding project to the Canungra State School in the hope that we can work together again on this.
If you had tax taken from any income you received during the financial year, you need to lodge a tax return (unless you fall within certain exceptions). If you are unsure whether you need to lodge a tax return, visit the Australian Taxation Office web site www.ato.gov.au and use the ‘Do I need to lodge a tax return’ tool. If this is your first year lodging a tax return, follow these tips to make tax time simple.
How
Lodge
online with myTax
If you are preparing and lodging your own tax return, the easiest and fastest way is online using myTax. To lodge online you’ll need a myGov account linked to the ATO. As a first time lodger, there are a few steps you need to follow: Step 1 – Have your tax file number (TFN) handy. Step 2 – Create a myGov account. Include your mobile number when you set up your account. To link your myGov account to the ATO you need to sign-in to myGov using a security code. Step 3 – Phone the Australian Taxation Office on 13 28 61 and enter your TFN and date of birth when requested. Select 1 at the prompt to get your unique linking code to verify your account from an operator. Each unique code will expire after 24 hours. Step 4 – Sign in to myGov, go to the Services page and link to the ATO. Select I have a linking code and follow the instructions as prompted. Step 5 – You’re now ready to use ATO online services and start your tax return using myTax.
When
is my
Tax Return Due?
If you are preparing and lodging your own tax return, you have from 1st July to 31st October to lodge. According to the ATO web site, if you lodge online in August or September, most of your information will already be pre-filled in your tax return. You’ll be less likely to leave something out.
How Do I Know What I
can
Claim?
If you are lodging your own claim, it is worth checking the deductions you can claim on the ATO web site at www.ato.gov.au/Individuals/Income-and-deductions/Deductions-you-can-claim/.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
CONTAINERS FOR CHANGE FOR CANUNGRA I have been approached by a number of Canungra and surrounding area residents who were previously using this service initiated by the State Government and hosted by Council at the Canungra Transfer Station. Unfortunately, the service ceased suddenly and Council’s Waste Officers have been working closely with GDR Truck Parts & Mechanical who took over the Containers for Change scheme in Beaudesert to extend it to Canungra. Currently, Saturday is the only day they can pick up in Canungra and a venue is being considered.
SMALL BUSINESS WEEK SUCCESS Small Business Week was celebrated throughout the region last month and the Canungra Chamber of Commerce hosted a very successful Networking Drinks Evening at The Hub which attracted some new Chamber members. If you are a small business owner in the area who would like to be kept updated with regional business news, please let me know so I can add your contact details to the mailing list. The Canungra Chamber of Commerce is a very progressive local business organisation which welcomes new members.
CONGRATULATIONS QCWA WONGLEPONG AND BEECHMONT What a hugely successful Country Showcase Wonglepong QCWA hosted last month - a festival of food, fresh produce, crafts and history all in the grounds surrounding their historic hall. It was a great family day. Congratulations also to the QCWA Beechmountain group which has graduated from a sub-branch to a branch and celebrated this milestone at Beechmont last Sunday.
BUDGET 2019-20 Council recently adopted the Community Budget for the coming financial year. This is a budget that continues to build on Council’s core commitments to sustainable service delivery, a strategic vision to renew our public spaces and support and encourage employment growth, at the same time holding the required average rate increase at just 1.8 per cent in line with national CPI. A copy of the 2019-20 Community Budget Report is available on Council’s website. I am happy to talk with any residents who may have questions arising from this.
NEW ORDINARY MEETING DATES From 1st July 2019 Council will now hold two Ordinary Meetings a month; on the second and fourth Monday commencing at 9am. This new schedule aims to streamline Council process and achieve community outcomes in a more timely manner.

Nature’s Gems
Scarlet Robin (Petroica Boodang) By Melissa Whitby
MAX - ID 80415 American Staffy Cross. Blue/Brindle Female – 3 Years 10 Months. Cost: $315 Hi, my name is Max. I’m a happy and enthusiastic staffy who loves a good exercise and a good play. I’ve lived with kids and another dog in the past and if that is your living situation I’d love to meet them just to make sure that you are the one who will take me to a new comfy home surrounded by joy and cuddles. I am fully vaccinated, wormed, desexed and health checked and am looking forward to meeting my new family.
Australia is a country that is home to an astounding array of bird species. One group of birds that has always delighted and fascinated me, is the Australian Robins. Sixteen robin species can be observed throughout the country. One of the most beautiful, in my opinion, is the Scarlet Robin. The male of the species can be easily identified by a vivid orange-red breast, white bill patch and bold white strip on the side of the wing. Females tend to be duller in colour with only a pale orange-red chest and grey upper parts. Similar species to the Scarlet Robin are the Flame Robin. Flame Robin males have a bright orange breast rather than the reddish orange breast of the male Scarlet Robin. These birds can be seen singly or in pairs. Whilst foraging, they can be very active by dropping to the ground and snatching their prey to then be consumed. The most common prey for these birds which I have observed them feed on is insects. These small birds utilise a number of natural and man-made habitats. These include watercourses, closed woodlands, foothill forests, gardens, urban parks and orchards. Scarlet Robins can be seen in southern Western Australia, South-east Queensland, coastal New South Wales and Victoria and throughout Tasmania. The breeding season for this species can be from August through to January. Nests are usually well hidden and are cup-shaped made from a variety of materials such as bark, grass, spider’s web and lichen. Throughout their range, Scarlet Robins are relatively common. Scarlet Robins are relatively easy to see in Tasmania and can be observed to remain in a locality for several days. Patience is the best way to get the perfect view of these birds. Once you have established that you are looking at a Scarlet Robin, move slowly and quietly and you will be amazed at how close you may be able to approach. I can guarantee that it is an encounter you will not forget!

Art on the Footpath: Tweed City By Susan Cully This sidewalk mosaic celebrates our hinterland rainforests. These two panels are just part of a long, sinuous mosaic at the main intersection in Tweed City, just across from the Tourist Information office, at the bus exchange. Tweed City could provide only these details on the artist: H & K Broadhurst – (Arts for All) Highgate Hill, Brisbane. A spectacular fruit-dove, the Wompoo Fruit-Dove, with its green upper body and back and plum-purple breast, highlighted with canary yellow on the belly and underwings. Even with this bright coloration, Wompoo Fruit-Doves are often hidden amongst the leaves high in the canopy of tropical and subtropical rainforests, found only by the sound of falling fruit and their distinctive call: ‘wompoo, wompoo’. In this mosaic the dove is looking right at home on a fruiting rainforest tree, with a fern underfoot and the blue sky overhead, punctuated by the beautiful pink flowers of Alloxyolon pinnatum, the Dorrigo Waratah. Each one to be seen in the rainforests of our plateaus, a Protaceae, a descendant noble Gondwana lineage.
The Regent Bowerbird is a small, slim bowerbird with a long, straight slender bill. The male bird is glossy jet black with bright gold on its head, nape and wings. The male’s bill and eye are yellow. The female is brownblack, mottled brown. The immature male is similar to the female on its underparts and to
the male on its upper parts. The male’s tail is shorter than that of the female or immature birds. Male Regent Bowerbirds’ eyes become yellow in the second year. This bird is shown in his ‘bower’, it is not a nest but rather a stage for serious displays enacted for the purpose of attracting a mate.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Responsibility, Reliability and Trustworthy. These three words keep coming into my mind as I ponder over this month’s article for St Luke’s. When I think about their meanings, I think they go hand in hand and we all need to consider what they mean in our lives. Do you have any responsibilities? I’m sure none of us can avoid being responsible for something or someone. In fact, for multiple things, and people. After all, if you are a parent, a sibling or a spouse, you will have a long list of responsibilities. If you work, you drive a vehicle, if you are a member of a group, your responsibilities will be endless. Tied in very closely with responsibility is reliability. Do people rely on you for some reason? Maybe for your leadership, your guidance, your support, your friendship, or much more. The third word is trustworthy. We all want to trust each other. We all want to feel a sense of belonging and support and know people can trust us, just as we want to trust them. At St Luke’s we rely each week on Rev Valerie as our leader and our guide as we listen to her message about trusting in God and about having faith. We trust Rev Valerie to deliver God’s word in a true and meaningful manner. On Friday 12th July, St Luke’s will come together, to put on our annual fund-raising dinner. There will be a delicious five course meal, raffle prizes, a lucky door prize and wonderful entertainment, costing just $30pp (BYO). Why not come along, enjoy dinner and friendship, have a laugh, win a prize (bring some extra money for raffle tickets) and feel the sense of pride we have in our beautiful church. You can certainly rely on St Luke’s to put on a great night. Trust me, you will not be disappointed. Phone David on 0459 51 8387 to reserve your seat.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby
We are having more and more functions and events booked at Moriarty Park which is a long time coming and great to see as it is a fabulous venue and very reasonably priced. Scenic Rim Regional Council have very kindly installed a terrific new oven and cooktop for us which will make catering for functions all too easy.
Markets
We are now hosts to the Canungra Village Markets which will be held on the last Sunday in July and on the 24th August as part of Canungra Show from 8am. Kids can play on the playpark while parents browse (still keepin’ an eye on ‘em of course!) ... or bring a tennis racket (see below!).
Tennis
The tennis courts are $6 an hour to use, at this stage on an honesty system where the money can be left in Vicky Rayner’s letter box at the top of Monarch Drive or Bren’s at 199 Lamington National Park Rd. Grant funding is currently being sourced to enable us to install our new locking and online booking system. Wednesday nights from 6-8pm is still the social tennis time but if anyone would like a hit during the day please contact us as daytime is often a better option for some of us.
We are hoping for a great turnout on Friday 19th July (not 12th as previously advertised) at 6pm for a 6.30 kick off. Cost is $5 per person, maximum six at a table and a great raffle table with tickets this time being $5; 3 for $10 or 8 for $20 ... I like to mix it up a bit to keep you thinking, lol. Will be some super prizes and a very worthy cause, affecting one of our local community members. The month of awareness for this condition is July and the colour is ORANGE so get dressed up in yer best orange gear and come on down!! If you can’t attend but would like to contribute in some way please contact Bren on 0414 435 919 or email bren.dalby@bigpond.com.
Children’s Disco
After years of no discos we are going to have a go with a new system and a fabulous, Owen, helping us technologically challenged numpties (that’s me!) pull it together! It will be a Xmas in July Disco on Friday 26th July. Anything Christmassy or Wintery
is theme for night with prizes of course. 5.45pm - 7pm for under 8 ; 7.15pm - 8.45pm for up to 12’s. Entry $4. Sausage sizzle $2 and lollies/drinks available for purchase.
XMAS
in
July Bingo
XMAS in July Bingo will be on Friday 2nd August as there are no available nights in July! Starts at 6pm. Loads of Xmas themed prizes provided by Foodworks and many, many chances to win! This will be a fundraiser in support of the All Abilities Relay on 10th August on Tamborine Mountain. Half a book $8; whole book $12. Always a fun night for all ages !
Meetings Meetings are still on third Monday of the month at 7pm and all are welcome. Check out our new website for more information too www.moriartypark.com.au.
More Activities
There will soon be walking soccer and Pilates at the park as part of the Be Healthy and Active program, and we have a new Pilates class at 9am on a Thursday too. Keep an eye out for info on these. Of course Margot has her yoga class on Monday mornings and soon we will have karate and self defence classes on Monday and Wednesday nights. Get involved and enjoy this wonderful community facility!!
Trivia
Trivia this month will be an extra special one - for Fragile X - a genetic disorder affecting intellectual ability.
