CANUNGRA SECURES POSITION IN ‘RACING’S KINDERGARTEN’

Canungra State School was awash with colour on Tuesday 24th March for Shave for a Cure. Students wore plain clothes & coloured their hair in return for a gold coin donation to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. In addition to colouring their hair, students also watched as local residents participated in Shave for a Cure held at the school at 2pm that day. Hairdressers Prue Sammartino & Lorrae Tatton shaved the heads of: ! James Blogg ! Joel Clayton ! Glen Gittins ! Justin Graham ! Tracey Keough ! Ashton KeoughVanderzee (Yr 4B) ! Kelvin Martin ! Morgan Ritter ! Peter Teveluwe Organisers were extremely happy with the $6,000 which was raised on the day. Elsewhere in the Shire, Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent looked a little different after dyeing his locks bright red in the Shave for a Cure event. Cr Brent said he was happy to take part in the event & thanked people who contributed to his fundraising efforts for their support. “I lost a dear friend to leukaemia last year & I knew this was something I could do to help raise money for leukaemia patients,” he said, “It was the least I could do to help out but I also thank the people who gave money for the cause.”

Canungra will gain from Queensland Racing Limited's (QRL) purchase of the prestigious Wadham Park training complex & veterinary hospital for an industry training centre according to QRL Chairman Bob Bentley. Mr Bentley said he anticipates the handover will take place on 1st July 2009, & it is intended to have each facility up & running as soon as possible. QRL is currently in the process of developing a staged development plan, which is likely to see ongoing development at each facility for a number of years. "Wadham Park will ensure south-east Queensland has up-todate training facilities to accommodate continued expansion of the industry," said Mr Bentley, "It’s only 40 minutes to the Gold Coast & one hour to Brisbane & is much like the industry centre in Victoria which is based at Cranbourne," he said. “Wadham Park is ideally situated, being in close proximity to the regional high schools of Beaudesert, Boonah, Canungra & Jimboomba. These schools are already providing a comprehensive agricultural curriculum but lack dedicated facilities to complement the student's enthusiasm for the industry in providing future horse technicians, trackwork riders & jockeys. The securing of Wadham Park will allow the transfer of QRL's already successful training department to take advantage of this exceptional resource base.” Continued page 37.
