ANZAC DAY 2009 CHAMPIONS
The Tamborine Mountain 4th Grade Cricket Comp was a resounding success for our Canungra lads taking out the Grand Final. The team finished 3rd overall in the season. In the 1/4 final they played Southport Labrador Black. Our lads scored 8/203 & won by 96 runs against 107 all out. In the Semi-Finals they played against Queens where the Canungra team scored 187 & Queens scored 9/185. The Grand Final was a whitewash in which our lads scored 122 & Broadbeach were only able to manage 71. The Man of the Match was Andrew (Peewee) Mahony. The guys would like to thank all the supporters during the season & would also like it known that the whole event was a team effort with great cohesion & unselfish teamplay. Team Captain Michael Mahony would like to thank all of his team-mates for a superb effort: Andrew Mahony, Thomas Mahony, William Mahony, Hugh Mahony, John Dougherty, Gary Stone, Benjamin Adkins, Daniel Rankin, David Moynahan, Aaron McCabe, David McCabe, Neil Brims & Matthew Lorenti. Most of the current players have been playing since they were juniors. The Canungra Times would like to congratulate the guys on their win & the best of luck next season.

Earlier in the year, The Canungra Times reported families in Canungra are struggling to find after school care for their children. Consequently, a working committee consisting of concerned parents, members of the school community & defence force representatives was formed to address the situation. The committee undertook a survey to assess the need for after school care & is currently conducting a survey to assess the need for vacation care. Survey forms have been distributed via Canungra State School, however more forms are available from the school if required. Please return forms to Kate Raymont ASAP (0413 681 380). Several organisations have been approached including the YMCA & PCYC (Police Citizens Youth Club – Nerang) who are quite keen to put something forward to provide an after school & vacation care service if sufficient numbers warrant it. The PCYC currently run an ASC service at Nerang State School & are setting up an ASC & Vacation Care at Mudgeeraba State School. Kate met with the PCYC & said they were very community focussed & keen to expand their ASC & vacation care service. The committee is also liaising with council regarding building certification for the service. Once all surveys have been compiled, numbers will be passed on to the YMCA & PCYC to assess the viability of the service. For more information call Kate on 0413 681 380 or read The Canungra Times for updates.

BE PREPARED WHEN GOING BUSH Scenic Rim State Emergency Service (SES) Local Controller Brendan Guy has encouraged bushwalkers to come prepared if they plan to tour the region's many National Parks over the cooler months. Mr Guy said while bushwalking is a great pastime, it does carry some risks even for experienced walkers & hikers. “Over the past 12 months, local emergency services personnel have been called on many times to respond to incidents where bushwalkers have been unprepared for the challenges of the region's wilderness areas,” he said. “It's easy to divert off the track & become disorientated when bushwalking, or to encounter bad weather, but the risks associated with bushwalking can be minimised simply by taking a few precautions.” “It's important to always tell someone about where you are going, your intended route & when you will be finished your bushwalk,” he said, “Make sure you check the weather forecast for the time you plan to be away. If storms or heavy rain are predicted in the area you're venturing into, it's best to leave your walk for another day. Careful consideration should also be given to taking suitable clothing & equipment when bushwalking. Wear solid footwear, take water, food, warm clothing & a torch. Particularly in dense hinterland areas, the weather can change rapidly, so it's important to be prepared for all weather conditions by packing some warm clothing. Hypothermia is a very real risk for bushwalkers.” Bushwalkers should also carry a mobile phone, whistle, matches, raincoat & first aid kit with them. He added that if bushwalkers do get into difficulties, they need to telephone triple zero (000) & give as much detail as they can about their location & any medical problems they suffer from. “Once you've alerted emergency services, stay where you are, make your location as visible as possible, & try & relax & conserve your energy until help arrives,” he said.

WHAT HAPPENED AT CANUNGRA STATE SCHOOL IN APRIL 2009
April Students of the Week: 31/03/09 Olivia Raymont (Year 1A) 7/04/09 Reilly Baker (Year Prep/1B) 21/04/09 Leah Hamel (Year 5A) 28/04/09 Samantha Torrens (Year 6A) Well done to these students for setting a fine example. March’s Tidy Class: Prep A (Teacher, Debbie Tenni) & Year 4A (Teacher, Susan Paterson). Thanks to Sue Warne & Canungra Hardware for the donation of a pot plant for our tidy class. 27th March – Interschool Swimming Carnival: Canungra State School was represented at the Interschool Swimming Carnival held at Mt Tamborine swimming pool. Well done to all those students who competed. Canungra had the following age champions: Girls 10 yrs: Cassandra Hampson Girls 11 yrs: Natalie Smith & Teah Craig (tied). Canungra won the overall Canungra & District Schools Swimming Sports Aggregate trophy. Fantastic effort! 30th March – 3rd April – Year 7 Camp: Year 7 had an action packed week at Camp Ainsworth in northern NSW. The weather got pretty wild & wet at times but everyone still had a great time. Thanks to the teachers for their organisation to make it all happen. See feature page 17. 30th March – 3rd April Computer System Upgrade: The entire school received a computer system upgrade called MOE (Managed Operating Environment). All state schools in Queensland are receiving this upgrade. The office staff & library had to contend with a few hiccups during the week, but it is hoped there will be many benefits for all users in the long term.
30th March – Rainforest Puppet Show: Kevin from Evergreen Children’s Theatre entertained students from Prep, Yr 1 & Yr 2 with his puppet stories, showing how the creatures of the rainforest live each day. See feature page 16. 31st March – Year 4 trip to Planetarium & Botanical Gardens: When we got to the planetarium we ate our morning tea under the shade of a tree. While I was eating I met a new boy named Ethan. After that we went inside the planetarium & did a worksheet. In there was a foyer & a gallery. The foyer had displays & a TV also a little shop & at the door of the foyer was a lifesize astronaut suit. The gallery had facts & photographs. When we finished the worksheet we were gathered near a big door. In there was a skydome & a star projector. The seats were leaning back so we could see the roof. When the show started it showed us all the planets, the moon, its craters & Saturn’s rings. It felt as if you were part of the rings it also felt like you were flying through space. He showed us a lot of the galaxies & the closest one to the Milky Way galaxy. When the show finished we went to the Botanical Gardens to have lunch. But it wasn't a pretty sight when the birds started pooing everywhere. Yuk. After we had our lunch we went for a walk in the Botanical Gardens & saw all sorts of plants. There was another huge dome full of plants & foul smells. It also had a huge tank with fish & coins in it. When we left the plant dome we went to the Japanese Gardens. While we were there I saw four bearded dragons. We also saw a gold chair with a head & some arms. Then we went over a bridge, under the bridge was some deadly little plants that looked like four-leaf clover. When it was time to go we walked all the way to the bus which wasn't a long way at all. When we were on the bus I sat next to Miss K & discussed what we were going to watch for our noodle reward. What I learnt from that excursion was don't sit under a tree full of birds, another thing I learnt was there is a galaxy close to ours but really that galaxy is two put together. FOCUS ON - PREP AT THE ENCHANTED RAINFOREST Prep students had a great time with Kevin, from Evergreen Children's Theatre, & his friends from the enchanted rainforest. They were introduced to some of the many birds that can be found: the bush turkey, the kingfisher & the bowerbird. Other interesting puppet characters were the green tree snake & frog. It was an entertaining way to learn how to care for the fragile environment of the rainforest.

FOCUS ON - YEAR 7 CAMP AINSWORTH By Kasey Marshall
On Monday 30th March, Grade 7 went to Lake Ainsworth at Lennox Heads in NSW. When I woke up that morning I was so excited about going to camp for 5 days. I got to school & I was really anxious to get on the bus & go. My friends & I sat down with all of our stuff at the fence just so we could get to the back of the bus. Everyone got on & we waved goodbye to our families. It was a long bus trip. At the camp we met our leaders, Nigel & Emily, & got into 2 groups. I was in the manta rays & Emily was our leader. We went snorkelling & I saw a sting ray, heaps of fish & some coral. It was fun but also windy & rainy. It was supposed to rain all week! When we got back to the campsite everyone was looking forward to having a hot shower. We had dinner then we had evening activities & supper & at 9.30 we went to bed. The next day we woke up at 7.00am & had brekky. We quickly got ready for rock climbing. It was so fun & when we went outside it was sunny. We had a screaming competition. Mrs Gosper did very well. After lunch we got ready for sailing which was really good. Sailing was my favourite activity on camp!! I was in a sail boat with Shanae, Paige & Beth. Then we went back & had dinner, did mini Olympics for night time activities, had supper & went to bed. The next day we cleaned the cabin before we went up to brekky. After brekky we went cycling for about 1 ½ hours on bush tracks & through the main street of Lennox Heads before we went up to the point. I got some really good photos. It was great fun. We rode back to the camp site, had lunch & got ready for surf skiing. Surf Skiing was pretty good other than the paddling which was quite hard because you tried to go left & it would make you got right. Renee, Sammy & I purposely capsized. Then we had to go back which was hardest because the wind was facing you & you had to try & paddle against it. We had dinner & went back to the stadium for night activities. Our activity was gambling kid version. Our group got about $378. After that we went back for supper then to the cabins & got ready for bed. Next morning we had brekky then headed down to the lake for canoeing. I paddled to the other side of the lake with Sasha & Eva then back with Beth. When Beth & I were going back we kept thinking of having a hot shower. After the shower we had dinner & then we had a disco in the stadium. When I got up on Friday I was cranky because the weather was gloomy again. We had to wake up at 6am because there was going to be cleaners coming in so we had to be out of the cabins by 8am. So I packed up everything & put it all in the museum. Our last activity was Archery. Unfortunately it was still raining but luckily it was under cover. Then we got on the bus & it took 2 hours to get back to Canungra. When we got there, there were parents already there, so everyone left before 2.50pm. This year's camp was the best EVER!!

The focus is set to be on 'things to do in your own backyard' & the many & varied activities that are on offer in the region. Mayor John Brent said: “It's important that we get this input from the local community & get a real understanding of those activities available within the region that people from the Scenic Rim enjoy so much. Whether it's a nice restaurant, a great place to visit or the best wine you've ever tasted – I encourage you to get in touch & let us know.” Council asks that those who wish to get involved email tourism@scenicrim.qld.gov.au with recommendations for things to do in their area. Contributors area asked to send their name, town & suggestion. Council Seeks Help To Find Missing Marquee: A Council asset which was well utilised by the local community has gone missing from its last known location at Rosevale. Council's marquee disappeared from Rosevale over the Easter long weekend where it was being used by the local church group. The marquee is 9m x 12m, is blue, yellow & white in colour & has the former Boonah Shire logo in the middle of it. Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent said the promotional tent was provided for use by community groups & it was disappointing to hear it was removed from the site without authorisation. “Anyone who knows where it is, is asked to contact council on 5540 5111,” he said. SCENIC RIM REGIONAL COUNCIL NEWS Infrastructure Funding Needed For SEQ: Scenic Rim mayor John Brent has backed a regional push by the Council of Mayors (SEQ) to secure a third of the Federal Government's $20 billion Building Australia Fund to support infrastructure spending. Cr Brent said with the Scenic Rim region, & south-east Queensland, contributing to a fifth of Australia's growth in the past 10 years, it had proved it was more than eligible for a slice of the funding. “Canberra needs to support the request for funding to boost infrastructure in the region at a time when the financial future is dependent upon generating business,” he said, “By doing so, the Federal Government will affirm its commitment to our region & ensure our part of the world benefits through continued growth.” Cr Brent said with many projects in the pipelines such as Bromelton, south-east Queensland was in a prime position to manage new infrastructure. “I have convened a three tiers of government forum for May where I will speak directly with federal members about a range of infrastructure issues,” he said. Scenic Rim To Host Traveling Exhibition: The State Library of Queensland's travelling exhibition, Broken Links: The Stolen Generations in Queensland, is on display at The Centre in Beaudesert until 7th June. Broken Links: the Stolen Generations in Queensland marked the passing of a decade since the publication of Bringing Them Home, the report of the Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission's national inquiry into the separation of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander children from their families. The exhibition was developed in consultation with an Indigenous reference group, whose members generously contributed their time & insights to the process of imagining the exhibition into being. The exhibition was opened with a blessing ceremony & viewing for local indigenous elders on 21st April. Entry to the exhibition is free. Help Name A Local Bridge: Scenic Rim mayor John Brent has called on local residents to help name three bridges in the Scenic Rim region. The three bridges are: · Crossing number seven on Running Creek Road · Wallace Creek on Boonah-Rathdowney Road · Steele Creek on Tamborine Mountain Road “For the many residents who travel across these bridges every day, it would be wonderful to see them given names with local significance,” he said, “Landmarks, local identities, historical personalities, indigenous names, or animals & plants found in the region would make ideal names.” Submissions will close on 22 May & can be made online at the Main Roads website at www.mainroads.qld.gov.au State Conference To Be Held By Council: After submitting a successful bid to Arts Queensland to host Queensland's inaugural Regional Arts & Culture Conference in February, council today confirmed its commitment to the event that is expected to attract more than 200 delegates in November of this year. The purpose of ARTSpeak 2009, presented in partnership with the Queensland Government, is to share excellence in regional arts & culture as well as to identify the direction & build capacity of Queensland's regional arts & cultural sector. Council will contribute $12,235 to presenting the event. Council's financial input will go towards the welcoming event for delegates as well as technical support, venue & equipment hire. ARTSpeak takes place from 18-20 November & will include keynote speakers, workshops, panel discussions & a program of artistic work. The four ARTSpeak themes are: encouraging community participation & engagement through arts & culture; building strong communities; supporting vibrant regional arts & cultural practice; & activating creative spaces. Planning for the event is due to get underway soon with staff from council's Arts & Culture department overseeing its organisation.
Corporate Plan Sets Council's Direction: Council adopted its Corporate Plan 2009-2014 which will set the strategic direction for council for the next five years. Mayor John Brent welcomed the approval of the plan which will be council's most important guide in the coming years, directing the development of the organisation & region. “We have considered the submissions we received & believe the final plan reflects the wishes of residents while providing council an opportunity to deliver our vision,” he said. Copies of the Corporate Plan are available for inspection at council's customer service centres & libraries, & on council's website at www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au\. Consideration Given To Skate Park 'Facelift': Tamborine's new skate park may soon receive some extra attention after councillors voted to consider spending an additional $12,000 on landscaping & maintenance. The park, which is already proving a great success with the young people in the area, may soon have a 'buffer zone' between it & adjoining properties, addressing one of the major concerns of its resident neighbours. Tamborine Councillor, Richard Adams said: “I'm really pleased with the way that the park has been received by local youngsters & this extra work will go a long way towards addressing some of the problems that were raised by concerned neighbouring residents.” “I know that some people in the area were concerned about the location of the park & I hope that the proposed additional work may alleviate some of these concerns. We will consider this petition but I would once again like to emphasise that this facility was established as part of a community initiative & at the request of young people in the area.” Cr Adams said.

COUNCIL COMMENT CR VIRGINIA WEST Infrastructure Symposium: I had the pleasure of attending the Local Government Infrastructure Symposium 2009 in Brisbane last week with my fellow councillors & council staff members. The theme of the symposium was 'community builder, community leaders – creating a new direction'. This conference provided valuable insight into infrastructure management, roads & transport planning, long term community planning & revenue raising & policy making among other topics. With council in essence creating a new direction since amalgamations just last year, the speakers provided some valuable insight which we as a council will now assess against our own existing policies & processes. Wadham Park: I recently visited Wadham Park with council to meet Queensland Racing officials & talk about their plans for the equine facility. During the visit we were able to gain a better understanding of Queensland Racing's development plans for the site & an appreciation of how council can work in partnership with their organisation to realise the development opportunities which will take place there. This was a wonderful opportunity to glean information directly from QR & to liaise & build a relationship with them which will benefit council. I am looking forward to continued communication with them as their plans progress. An open day was also held at the park recently which allowed community members to visit the site & speak with equine professionals Anzac Day: Residents across the region stopped to remember our fallen Anzacs on Saturday as the 91st anniversary of the landing at Gallipoli. This is an important date on the calendar when we can stop to remember those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. Prior to Anzac Day on April 25, Tamborine Mountain State High School hosted a moving ceremony on Friday. It was a lovely ceremony & the students should be proud of their efforts. It was wonderful to see so many local & neighbouring residents at the dawn service to pay tribute to the fallen. A huge thank you to Molly Eldridge & Luke Middis from Canungra State School who laid the wreath on my behalf as I was still traveling back from the service at Rathdowney. I also commend the RSLs & other organisations which organise these local services on a job well done. Thank you also to council's Canungra depot staff who gave freely of their time to control traffic in Canungra on Anzac Day. Their willingness to do so deserves a big thank you from the community. Cr Heather Wehl also traveled to Gallipoli & placed a wreath on behalf of the Scenic Rim region. Sculpture in Lions Park: What a wonderful addition it is to Lions Park to have a sculpture by Silvio Apponyi now on display. Silvio is from South Australia & he has made a beautiful platypus sculpture for us. I encourage everyone to go have a look at the artwork. It is a wonderful addition to our local park & something we should be very proud of. The sculpture is part of a BADCAP project. Contact Me: Please feel free to contact me anytime. I am always available on 0407 630 052 or virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au I am also at the Canungra Library on the first Saturday of each month from 9am to 11am.

Rating: ***1/2 out of 5 Reviewed by: O.C Rating: MA15+ Running Time: 112mins One general rule with movies is that the bulk of them have 3 acts; the first one is the set up & the 3rd is of course, the conclusion. The 2nd is simply the connection between these two & is more than likely where a film can start to drag a little. Some films don't utilize this tried & tested formula of the acts system, but it can be seen in a lot of motion pictures. Not something that most people probably look for but if one knows of the 3 act rule then the new war drama DVD Stop-Loss might make them see that there isn't an evident 3 act structure within the movie. Even if there are obvious structure acts; there isn't the common downtime in the 2nd act. Worth mentioning as the movie starts out a little slow & consistently gains momentum; but does it reach its destination? Announcements made further down the track! The title of the movie refers to the recalling of duty of war officers after their initial discharge for services. It took director Kimberly Peirce 8 years to follow up after her acclaimed first movie (Boys Don't Cry). During a talk show interview, Peirce revealed that she wasn't overly impressed with the offers from Hollywood studios during this time & wanted to wait for a project that she felt passionate about again. The beginning of Stop-Loss shows a montage of a small unit in the Middle East. The different slices of time gives a documentary feel to the film. We then see the unit engage in cross fire with their enemies. Following all of this we flash forward to Texas, USA where the troops are being welcomed home & honoured for their services. The main character is Sgt Brandon King (Ryan Phillipe), we have his best friend Sgt Steve Shriver (Channing Tatum) who is if anything an enthusiastic soldier & then there is Tommy Burgess (Joseph Gordon Levitt). Both Steve & Tommy are struggling with conduct whilst off combat duties. Main character Brandon's problems only begin when he actually gets stop lossed. Stop-Loss is a movie in which there isn't too much to comment about. There is no need to mention the lighting, sound or directorial shots as it doesn't focus heavily on these things. The film succeeds in its aims to highlight the intricacies of officers within the Iraq war. This is done in a way that the viewer instigates themselves by wondering about other people in similar situations. There isn't heavy handed preaching in affirmations of pro war or not. One thing that is noticeable is the acting, there are probably no award winning performances but they all seem to be in sync with one another. One of them doesn't try to act over the other or talk louder, quiter, more intelligently etc. Stop–Loss makes it to its goal destination. Obviously this isn't a movie for just entertainment value but it's a trip that most would be glad they took!

HEALTH NEWS - MADE IN CHINA Susie Cox Canungra Health Clinic
After many scares associated with manufacturers of food goods from China they are going to great lengths to avoid indicating the state of origin of their products. There are vague references such as 'made with Australian & imported goods' etc. The latest horror story with the chemical melamine in baby's milk should make us all very aware. The scandal saw 53,000 children sickened & four killed by milk laced with melamine, an industrial chemical normally used to make plastics. When added to milk, the toxic chemical can make it appear richer in protein. The European Commission has extended bans on Chinese milk products to include biscuits & chocolate. This includes a total ban on all products for infants containing “any percentage of milk. There is one sure way to check the origin of products, by reading the bar codes on any suspect foods. All goods must have a bar code & if the first three digits on the bar code are from 690 to 695 inclusive then the goods are made in China. Check Your Honey: Another Chinese scam, according to the U.K.Times newspaper, is that honey from China is being disguised & illegally sold as a product from another country. Drums of honey are shipped from China to a distributor outside the country, then repackaged. Unfortunately, Australia is on the list of guilty parties, a Melbourne company having been charged & fined. The Australian Honeybee Industry is horrified, particularly as the Chinese are known to treat their hives with an antibiotic. The antibiotic is chloramphenicol known to have serious side-effects. Best to double check the source of your honey. Refs.Michael Cambray, U.K Times newspaper, France International News 24/7

'ICE CAMPAIGN' We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory. If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence the 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign. The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As mobile phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency). The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents there were always mobile phones with patients but they didn't know which number to call. He thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognised name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel & hospital staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialling the number you have stored as 'ICE'. It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest.

DANIELLE’S GARDENS
SWINE FLU How Can I Protect Myself From Getting Swine Influenza from Infected People? In the past, human infection with swine influenza was generally mild but has caused severe illness such as pneumonia. None of the confirmed cases in the United States have had the severe form of the disease & the patients recovered without requiring medical care. In Mexico, some patients reportedly had the severe form of the disease. To Protect Yourself, Practice Preventive Measures for Influenza: ? Avoid close contact with people who appear unwell & who have fever & cough. ? Wash your hands with soap & water frequently & thoroughly. ? Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, & keeping physically active. If There Is An Ill Person at Home: ? Try to provide the person with a separate section in the house. If this is not possible, keep the patient at least 1 metre away from others. ? Cover mouth & nose when caring for the ill person. Masks can be bought or made but must be disposed of or cleaned properly. ? Wash your hands with soap & water thoroughly after each contact with the ill person. ? Try to improve the air flow in the area where the ill person stays. Use doors & windows to take advantage of breezes. What Should I Do If I Think I Have Swine Influenza? If you feel unwell, have high fever, cough &/or sore throat: ? Stay at home & keep away from work, school or crowds. ? Rest & take plenty of fluids. ? Cover your mouth & nose with tissues when coughing & sneezing & dispose of the used tissues. ? Wash your hands with soap & water frequently & thoroughly. ? Seek help for household chores that require contact with other people such as shopping.

REASONABLE RATES - 0418 984 679 A TAP ON THE SHOULDER
A passenger in a taxi leaned over to ask the driver a question & tapped him on the shoulder. The driver screamed, lost control of the cab, nearly hit a bus, drove up over the curb, & stopped just inches from a large plate glass window. For a few moments everything was silent in the cab, & then the still shaking driver said, 'I'm sorry, but you scared the daylights out of me.' The frightened passenger apologized to the driver & said he didn't realize a mere tap on the shoulder could frighten him so much. The driver replied, 'No, no, I'm sorry, it's entirely my fault. Today is my first day driving a cab. I've been driving a hearse for the last 25 years.’

BIRDING SPOTS OF SOUTH-EAST QUEENSLAND - SPRINGBROOK By Melissa Whitby
South-East Queensland is home to an amazing array of bird life. Last month, I wrote about a property “Glendon” just west of Warwick However, there are more places such as this that are worth a look. One such place is Springbrook. For those who are not familiar with Springbrook, it is located a stones' throw from the Gold Coast. Best Of All Lookout is the first place I would recommend visiting & is located at the top of Springbrook along the QLD/NSW border. If you are keen to see an Albert's Lyrebird, this is the place to go. The winter months are the best time to visit as this is when the birds are breeding & males are calling constantly & are therefore easier to see. You may even see one on the side of the road as you are driving to get there! It is also a great place to see White-browed Scrub-wrens, Eastern Yellow Robins & Logrunners. This area is also unique as it is where the ancient Antarctic Beech Trees from the Gondwana period can be seen. The place I would suggest visiting next is the Canyon area located adjacent to the Twin Falls Walking Track. There is a resident pair of Peregrine Falcons that regularly patrol the cliff line. It is also a local hangout for Crimson Rosellas, White-throated Treecreepers, Variegated Fairy Wrens & flocks of Topknot Pigeons that fly over. The Springbrook Information Centre is a piece of history that is worth visiting & can be found at the end of Old School Road. This is a beautiful spot where birds such as the Golden Whistler, Eastern Whipbird & Logrunners are regularly encountered. If you walk out to the end of the boardwalk, the Paradise Riflebird & Albert's Lyrebird can be regularly heard calling. This is also a great place to observe the montane heath that is another unique vegetation type to Springbrook. One common little furry creature which inhabits this area is the Red-necked Pademelon. These small animals can be seen feeding along the roadside in the early morning & late afternoon. Last but not least is the entrance to the Purling Brook Falls Track. This is a great spot to see the old favourites such as the Australian Scrub-Turkey, Satin Bowerbirds & Rainbow Lorikeets flying over. Pigeons such as the Wompoo Pigeon & Whiteheaded Pigeon can be seen & heard further down the track in the sub-tropical rainforest. If you also like scenery, Purling Brook Falls is a unique icon of the Springbrook experience & well worth viewing. Overall, Springbrook is a remarkable area to visit. For those who may be keen to stay overnight, there are several small bed & breakfast places that are suitable. After visiting Springbrook, your memories will be forever etched with the visions of Crimson Rosellas feeding on the roadside & Yellow-tailed Cockatoos flying through the trees!
NOT FORGETTING... An elderly husband & wife noticed that they were beginning to forget many little things around the house. They were afraid that this could be dangerous, as one of them may accidentally forget to turn off the stove &cause a fire. So, they decided to go see their doctor to get some help. Their doctor told them that many people their age find it useful to write themselves little notes as reminders. The elderly couple thought this sounded wonderful, & left the doctor's office very pleased with the advice. When they got home, the wife said, "Dear, will you please go to the kitchen & get me a dish of ice cream & why don't you write that down so you won't forget?" "Nonsense," said the husband, "I can remember a dish of ice cream!" "Well," said the wife, "I'd also like some strawberries on it. You better write that down, because I know you'll forget." "Don't be silly," replied the husband. "A dish of ice cream & some strawberries. I can remember that!" "OK, dear, but I'd like you to put some whipped cream on top. Now you'd really better write it down now. You'll forget," said the wife. "Come now, my memory's not all that bad," said the husband. "No problem - a dish of ice cream with strawberries & whipped cream." With that, the husband shut the kitchen door behind him. The wife could hear him getting out pots & pans, & making some noise inconsistent with his preparing a dish of ice cream, strawberries, & whipped cream. He emerged from the kitchen about 15 minutes later. Walking over to his wife, he presented her with a plate of bacon & eggs. The wife took one look at the plate, glanced up at her husband & said, "Hey, where's the toast?”

OLD GUYS................. I was in the supermarket the other day pushing my trolley around when I collided with a young guy pushing his. I said to the young guy, "Sorry about that. I'm looking for my wife & I guess I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.” The young guy says, "That's OK. It's a coincidence. I'm looking for my wife, too. I can't find her & I'm getting a little desperate. I said, "Well, maybe we can help each other. What does your wife look like?” The young guy says, "Well, she is 24 years old, tall, with blond hair, big blue eyes, long legs, big boobs, & she's wearing tight white shorts, a halter top & no bra. What does your wife look like?" I said, "Doesn't matter --- let's look for yours.” Most of us old guys are helpful like that.
BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR An old woman saved a fairy's life. To repay this, the fairy promised to grant the old woman three wishes. For the first wish, the old lady asked to become young & beautiful. Poof! She became young & beautiful. For the second wish, the old lady asked to be richest woman in the world. Poof! She was the richest woman in the world. For the last wish, she pointed at the cat she had kept for years. She asked that he be turned into the most handsome man on earth. After all, he had been her best friend for so many years. Poof! The fairy turned the cat into the most handsome man on earth. The old lady & the fairy said their goodbyes. After the fairy left, the handsome man strolled over to her & asked, "Now aren't you sorry you had me neutered?”

AN ATHEIST IN THE WOODS An atheist was walking through the woods. “What majestic trees!'What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!” He said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder & saw that the bear was closing in on him. He looked over his shoulder again, & the bear was even closer. He tripped & fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw & raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the Atheist cried out, “Oh my God!” Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent as a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don't exist & even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?” The atheist looked directly into the light, “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?” “Very well,” said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed & the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head & spoke: “Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.”
AWL APPEALS TO RESIDENTS TO BUY ONE, SET ONE FREE When was the last time you went for a Sunday drive? Animal Welfare League of Qld public relations manager Gabrielle Wheaton is hoping Canungra residents will revive the tradition this month & make the trip to one of the AWL Rehoming Centres at Coombabah or Stapylton. The shelters are currently at full capacity, & have been for two months, so Miss Wheaton is urging anyone considering adopting an animal to act now. “We're so full at the moment & it just breaks your heart to think we have no room for incoming animals in need,” Miss Wheaton said, “Besides the cats & kittens in our care, we have some beautiful adult dogs looking for loving homes. The sad thing is, not many people are adopting adult dogs, which is a shame because these dogs have so much love to give.” Miss Wheaton urged anyone able to provide a responsible, lifelong home to a bigger dog to visit either the AWL shelters & adopt. “Naturally the bigger the dog is, the more space they need, so we're reminding people that for every animal you buy, you are setting one free. Each dog & cat that goes home means another animal can move into the adoption pens.” She encouraged prospective owners to research the common myths of owning larger dogs. Not all big dogs need a lot of exercise, & just because they're bigger it does not mean they will eat you out of house & home. The most cost effective way of feeding larger dogs is with a home-made recipe, but be sure to consult your vet first to ensure your pet is getting all the necessary nutrients. It's true many big dogs have an appetite to match, however, they also have slower metabolisms than smaller dogs, so need fewer calorie & less fat to stay healthy. The AWL recognises the commitment involved in adopting a larger dog in the current economic climate, so has most big dogs available for adoption for just $200. Smaller dogs are also available for adoption from $250 & are a good choice if you have limited space. It costs about $400 to rescue & rehome every animal in its care, so while the AWL is losing money on every animal rehomed, the important thing is they are being rehomed at all. AWL is a not-for-profit animal welfare organisation dedicated to achieving its goal of zero euthanasia of healthy cats & dogs. The AWL also has a strong focus on educating the community about issues of responsible pet ownership hopes its focus on educating the community will mean a brighter future for more animals. To learn more about the range of great programs available, to seek advice from one of our experienced trainers, to offer your support or to adopt one of our animals, visit www.awlqld.com.au.
PETS OF THE MONTH Meow Meow: Meow Meow is a truly beautiful cat who will bring many smiles & contentment to her new owner. She is a twoyear-old Domestic Medium Hair with a beautiful tabby & white coat & would suit a family with children as she is quite affectionate. She has a charming little soul, a quiet nature, & is sociable & affectionate, yet enjoys her solitude & independence just as much. Meow-Meow is best suited to a dog-free home where she will be free to explore every corner of her abode & curl up with her new companion each night. Meow- Meow is $70 & comes desexed, vaccinated, microchipped & wormed. Lincoln: Lincoln is a big, beautiful wolfhound-mastiff cross looking for a new home. He has the sweetest nature, however is a bit of an escape artist. Because of this, & his rather large size, he will need the right kind of fencing & an owner who has experience with larger dogs. Lincoln is an obedient lad & does not bark much, gets on well with other dogs of all sizes (but not cats). He is good with children & adults & loves to play ball. Lincoln 14 months old, is $120 & comes desexed, vaccinated, microchipped & wormed. If you would like to meet Meow Meow or Lincoln, please drop by the AWL Rehoming Centre on Shelter Road in Coombabah, just off Brisbane Rd. You can call the AWL on (07) 5509 9000 or visit their website: ww.awlqld.com.au.

SCENIC RIM ESCAPES On Thursday 23rd April, over 30 members of Scenic Rim Escapes Inc descended on the Sarabah Estate Vineyard to sample local wine, network & listen to special guest speaker Gold Coast Airport CEO, Micheal Curtis. Sarabah Estate Vineyard has just past its first birthday & was a perfect venue for the meeting, showcasing the dramatic mountains of Lamington & the gentle green valley below with its meandering creek. Gold Coast Airport is a major sponsor of this year's Scenic Rim Tourism Awards, a Scenic Rim Escapes initiative that aims to increase pride in the region. The Awards are open to all tourism operators in the Scenic Rim Region & ten categories are available to enter. Entries open in the new financial year. Mr Curtis outlined the past growth of the Airport & its further expansion including how Scenic Rim Escapes collaborative culture could fit into the various markets now visiting the Gold Coast & new developing markets. Scenic Rim's unique product offers a refreshing alternative to those who have gone a bit stale after a few visits to the Gold Coast. Opportunities from the New Zealand & Asian markets with new routes & cheaper long haul flights will offer more incentive for budget wise travellers who wouldn't normally have the money or inclination to stopover at the Gold Coast for a few days. Mr Curtis said Gold Coast Airport continues a steady pattern of growth & expansion despite the recession. Stage 1 has just been completed in March & the final stage is expected to be finished in October/November this year. Scenic Rim Escapes is a tourism organisation dedicated to promoting the profile of this beautiful area & help local business learn, grow & achieve more as a collaborative group. THE GAY FLIGHT ATTENDANT
On the 5th of April owners Karen MacAndrew & Monique Morcus of Tiny Town Miniature Horse Stud headed for Sydney for the Miniature Horse Assoc of Australian National Show. Out of the 5 horses that competed in the 5 day event, all got at least Top 5 in the Nation with Tiny Town Carbon Copy getting National Champion for 3yo Stallion & yearling filly Little Dobbin Batiks Suay getting Reserve Champion. They planned on the way home to stop in Tamworth for the Independent Horse Registry National show. Monique said “we were on the road anyway so why not compete at both shows competing against the best in the Nation. Even with the busy schedule, it was well worth the effort, especially since our boy took out National champion at both shows! In Sydney there were approx 350 miniature competitors & around 450 in Tamworth. Out of the 6 horses competing in Tamworth, again all horses Tiny Town entered won top 5 in all classes. Tiny Town Carbon Copy won National Champion & the surprise was yearling filly Tiny Town 'J' Delta Cream winning 3rd out of approx 14 entries. I knew she had it in her, we were told not to take her she was just a broodmare but I was confident she was more than that and we proved it”. Monique & Karen are now concentrating on the IMHR Qld Youngstock & MHAA Foal futurities held on the 9th & 23rd May. You can visit the website www.tinytownstud.com .
My flight was being served by an obviously gay flight attendant, who seemed to put everyone in a good mood as he served us food & drinks. As the plane prepared to descend, he came swishing down the aisle & told us that 'Captain Marvey has asked me to announce that he'll be landing the big scary plane shortly, so lovely people, if you could just put your trays up, that would be super.' On his trip back up the aisle, he noticed this well-dressed & rather Arabic looking woman hadn't moved a muscle. “Perhaps you didn't hear me over those big brute engines but I asked you to raise your trazy-poo, so the main man can pitty-pat us on the ground,” he said. She calmly turned her head & said, “In my country, I am called a Princess & I take orders from no one.” To which (I swear) the flight attendant replied, without missing a beat, 'Well, sweet-cheeks, in my country I'm called a Queen, so I outrank you. Tray-up, Princess.” The Canungra Times, May 2009 - Page 37
