Orchid Show Another Great Success
Beaudesert and District Orchid and Foliage Society President, Barry Cheeseman
By Peter Rice, BDOFS The Beaudesert and District Orchid and Foliage Society’s Autumn Show was another great success with 565 visitors passing through the doors over the weekend of 14th and 15th March. Many of these people attend the Shows because they will see some spectacular exhibits, be able to purchase quality plants, hear interesting speakers, willingly be given advice and partake of refreshments in friendly surroundings. The 117 Orchids and 124 Foliage Plants filled the Canungra School of Arts Hall with colour, form and texture. The
trade tables were varied and none of the vendors was unhappy with their sales. Many visitors were the happy recipients of products provided by our main sponsors - Amgrow, Yates, Seasol, Terra Firma and Neutrog – to whom we are extremely grateful. Our Giant Garden Hamper is always popular and the winners were: • First Prize: Chris Dore of Beaudesert. • Second Prize: Jacalyn Jones of Regents Park. • Third Prize: Frank Waldon of Mt Tamborine. Our Lucky Door winners were:
Your lifestyle counts!
• Lexie Felton of Graceville. • Lannie McLaughlan of Cedar Vale. All prizes have been received by their lucky winners. The residents of Canungra and its surrounds turn out in large numbers and give us such tremendous support for which our Society is ever so appreciative. Our next Show will be dominated by Native Orchids and there are some exhibitors at our Spring Shows who are expert in the growing of these Australian Orchids so pencil our Spring Show for Orchids and Foliage Plants which will be held on 12th and 13th September.

Jodie Moves On!
After 17 years at Canungra Newsagency, Jodie Devlin called it a day on Saturday 14th March. Jodie has worked for three sets of owners of the newsagency, each time it sold she continued on, showing Shona and Paul Kraayvanger the ropes when they took over from Norm and Jo Rose in 2002, then doing the same for Jan and Shane Stevenson in 2011. When Paul and Shona sold the newsagency, they joked that Jodie came with the shop. Over the years Jodie became well known for her forthright nature and her ability to find whatever it was you needed at the newsagency! Jodie has started her own business, Devlin’s Done N Dusted, which is already keeping her very busy.

Tamborine Mountain College would like to send a very big thank you to all of the families from the College who generously donated items to their Vanuatu appeal. Canungra resident, Lachlan Bartlett in Year 11 initiated this appeal and he was delighted with the support that was given, his exact words were “our families here at the College are the best” which Principal June Melbourne said is certainly true! The College managed to collect a lot of items that are now being sent to the people of Vanuatu who are in need following Cyclone Pam.

An Amazing Tale of Life in the Outback Jacqueline Hammar has lived an amazing life, and her story is one that publishers Allan & Unwin realised immediately would resonate with the Australian public and beyond. Daughter of the Territory is Jacqueline’s account of her life in the Northern Territory of Australia, an honest and adventurous
tale which makes for a great read. Jacqueline was born in Darwin in 1929 and lived in various remote bush settlements with her parents. She was sent to boarding school in Darwin when she was five, and later to Brisbane after the outbreak of the Second World War. After moving back to the Territory in her twenties she met and married stockman Ken Hammar. They lived most of their lives along the Limmen Bight River where they turned hundreds of thousands of acres of untamed country into a prosperous cattle station. Visiting Jacqueline and her husband Ken in their Canungra home, I was struck by the refinement and peace that emanates from the couple. They have

lived through conditions we would today consider harsh, but their experiences have obviously created a close bond between them. Daughter of the Territory took Jacqueline eight years to write, ‘on and off’ with Ken encouraging her to return to the novel when she became distracted by other things. She hand wrote the manuscript
which family friend Shona Kraayvanger typed for her before submitting it for publication. Jacqueline said her father was also a great story teller and parts of the book are stories he recounted to her throughout his life. Daughter of the Territory is a great Australian novel in the tradition of Sarah Henderson, and Canungra’s own Mary Groves. It is available in book stores and online.

ANZAC Centenary Celebrations By Keith Cogzell
A contingent of 100 servicemen and women from Kokoda Barracks will help mark the Centenary of the Gallipoli landing on Anzac Day in Canungra. Army, Navy and Air Force personnel in uniform will lead the march of veterans, community groups and school students along Christie Street and into D J Smith Park. Federal member Scott Buchholz will take the salute from the parade as it winds its way from the Canungra State School to D J Smith Park. The historic stone memorial in the park, established with public monies in 1938, has been the focal point of local Anzac Day observance for the past 77 years. The mid morning Anzac service will feature traditional readings and prayers, a keynote address, Last Post and the laying of wreaths by community organisations and individuals, concluding around 10.30 am. It was one hundred years ago this year that young Australians from all walks of life landed in the early morning dawn at Gallipoli Cove.
Servicemen and women march at Canungra in 2014
For many, the tradition of Anzac Day commemoration starts in the silence of the early dawn. Each year up to a thousand residents and visitors assemble in D J Smith Park at 5.30am to be part of a stirring Dawn service that remembers the brave actions of those who landed on that distant shore and suffered or made the ultimate sacrifice. Although a century has passed since those young men established the Anzac
legend in France and Gallipoli, observance of Anzac Day in the wider community has never been stronger. Australians right around the nation will gather on Saturday 25th April in cities and towns to remember and pay their respects to those original Anzacs and to those who have continued to maintain the Anzac spirit with its enduring ideals of courage and mateship.

QCWA Poppies for Remembrance
By Joyce Libke
After the formation of QCWA Wonglepong Branch in 1925 the members became involved in catering for the World War One returned servicemen and women on Anzac Day. During World War Two, austerity measures resulted in this activity being discontinued, however, the ladies became enthusiastic workers for the Australian Comforts Fund. Branch records show, amongst the many items made for the serving men, were 62 “hussifs” and 133 dozen handerchiefs.
In 2015, the members are busy making poppies for display in the Canungra Library. On ANZAC day they will also have a display of 306 poppies in D J Smith Park for the 306 service men who enlisted from this District in both World Wars as displayed on the Canungra War Memorial. These will include: • Set of 25 poppies for those who went to war. • Poppies for some of those who did not return. • 18 poppies for the 18 men who did not return from World War One.

The Young Cook
By Christine Manning. First published in Australian Family Tree Connections, April 2007
Many years after the end of WWII a story unfolded of a courageous soldier who risked his life to give dying soldiers comfort in their last days. Unknown at the time were his ties to the dying soldier’s family. After WWII, Lieutenant Colonel Coates visited Jack Chadwick to talk about his brother Allan, who died as a POW on the BurmaThailand railway on 15th December 1943. Lieutenant-Colonel Coates was a surgeon who looked after Allan so he was able to inform Jack of his brother’s time in the camp. When Allan became ill he was sent to hospital where he was locked in an iron railway carriage for five days and nights. The carriage was overcrowded with other sick men and only a bucket of water and rice for sustenance and a bucket for toileting. There was no treatment provided during these five days of incarceration. By this stage Allan’s legs were covered in tropical ulcers. When Allan and the other ailing POWs finally arrived at the hospital Allan was operated on and one of his legs was amputated as gangrene had set in. Lieutenant-Colonel Coates told Jack that while Allan was in hospital he witnessed a young Army chap, affectionaly called the ‘Young Cook’, crawling between the beds and feeding the sickest soldiers out of a bowl. When he came to Allan he spent some time talking and feeding him. The following night the young soldier came back and spent more time with Allan. Allan was operated on again and it was found the gangrene had spread throughout his body and he did not survive the day. When the young chap came back that night he was very upset to find Allan had died. The Japanese officers had forced the young cook to prepare their meals for them. He risked his life every night sneaking over to the hospital with chicken broth he pinched from the Japanese to feed the sick men. Nobody knew how he did it without detection

from the Japanese. The young cook didn’t tell anyone his name, so nobody could betray him under torture. Lieutenant-Colonel Coates informed Jack that he had never heard the young cook’s real name but hoped someone would learn of his courageous efforts for his fellow comrades in arms. Some years after hearing Lieutenant-Colonel Coates’ story, Jack Chadwick and his wife Edna were having a get-together at their family home and when Edna wanted to get Jack’s attention from across the room she yelled out his Army nickname ‘Chaddy’. Edna’s brother in law, Vincent Shears (who married Edna’s sister Rachel) came over to Edna and asked her what she had just called Jack. Vince told Edna he had known a chap in his POW camp that everyone called ‘Chaddy’ who had played in a band. Edna showed Vince a picture of

the Crows Nest Band in which Allan and Jack both performed before going to war. Vince pointed out Allan in the photo as the ‘Chaddy’ he knew from his POW camp. Edna asked Vince if he was at the hospital when Allan died. Vince’s reply was ‘yes’. Immediately Edna asked Vince if he was the young cook. Vince didn’t reply and wanted to know how she got hold of such a story. Edna told Vince about Lieutenant-Colonel Coates story and Vince admitted that he was indeed the young cook in the POW camp all those years ago. Vince was reluctant to acknowledge his heroic efforts, even though he knew if he had been caught by the Japenese he would have been tortured, or worse, beheaded. Edna tried to thank Vince for being with Allan in his last days and for risking his own life. Vince shrugged his shoulders and said, “Anyone would have done the same for his mates.” Vince did not want anyone knowing what he did, although he allowed Allan’s brother Jack to be told. Both Jack and Edna were sworn not to tell anybody else including Vince’s wife Rachel. The conditions in the POW camp were deplorable and dying in such a place away from loved ones must have been extremely hard on Allan. Because of Vince’s modesty no-one ever really knew what he did for Allan and the other soldiers and he probably never got the thanks and recognition he really deserved. What Vince did could have cost him his life. He gave so much comfort to Allan and for that I am sure Jack was eternally grateful. If Lieutenant-Colonel Coates were still alive I am sure he would be very happy to see this story finally be told. This story was provided by Vincent’s son Ray Shears with permission of the author and Australian Family Tree Connections

Changes To Scenic Rim RADF Program
Scenic Rim’s Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) program is being restructured. Scenic Rim RADF Committee chair Cr Rick Stanfield said under new guidelines being implemented for the forthcoming grants round, the majority of funding will be directed to projects which aligned to the strategic themes of Council’s community-based cultural programs. “In 2014/15 these strategic themes are War Stories and Our Town, Cultural Trails and Vibrant
and Active Towns and Villages, with 70% of RADF funding to be directly linked to outcomes which reflect these,” he said. “The remaining 30% will be directed towards the promotion of artistic excellence through the Scenic Rim Artist-In-Residence program and professional development opportunities.” For further information, visit www.liveatthecentre.com.au or call Council’s Arts and Culture department on 5540 5111.
Community Grants Program
Council will provide more than $42,000 in assistance to local community groups through the third round of the 2014/15 Community Grants Program. In total, 36 community groups will share in financial support totalling $42,672, with an additional 17 groups receiving in-kind support totalling $8,500. Four groups in the Canungra and Beechmont district will receive funding for projects. Council allocated $175,000 to the annual Community Grants program in 2014/15, with more than $122,000 provided to local organisations to date. Corporate and Community Services Committee Chair Cr Nigel Waistell said Council’s Community Grants provided important assistance for local organisations to undertake a range of projects integral to community building. “The grants are significant in assisting community groups with access to materials, repairing infrastructure or upgrading technologies, and supporting community events,” Cr Waistell said. Locally funded projects include: • Australian Army Training Team Vietnam Canungra - Promote Memorial • Beechmont Tennis Club - Purchase a tennis ball machine • Canungra Area Golf Club Inc - Purchase a security camera • Canungra Hang Gliding Club - Equipment for landscaping. Applications for the remaining round of the 2014/15 Community Grants Program close on 8th May. Things to know about Solar Power and things to consider:
We provide free energy audits and free quotes.
• Government Rebates are still in place to reduce the initial cost of your Solar panel system. • Even though the 8 cent feed in tariff from energy providers is low, every kilowatt hour you get from the sun is FREE! • The days are now gone for new customers to receive 44 cents and 50 cents feed in tariffs and getting refunds from energy providers. But you can drastically reduce your power bill with a solar panel system by maximising your day time power usage and minimising your night time usage. Example: running pool pumps or bore pumps during the day using the solar power. • Do you have a business premises that generally operates during the day light hours? Solar is perfect for off setting your day time usage, as generally there would be next to no night usage. • If you currently have a solar panel system? Has your system been checked that its working to its full potential with no issues and have your panels been regularly cleaned to maximise efficiency ? • We recommend a system service at least every 12 months. • Have you got energy efficient lighting? LED lighting now provides bright lighting with low power consumption. • What type of hot water do you have? If it is electric is it on off peak? • Do you require a generator change over switch set up connected to your switch board? Ready to power your house in case of a black out?

News from St Luke’s Anglican Church
By Di Ayscough The sun shone beautifully in Canungra for our recent Car Boot Sale and it was encouraging to see so many people come through the gates to enjoy a great day. From young children enjoying toys, to stall holders selling their bric a brac, furniture or old wares and others feasting on sausages, or Devonshire tea, everyone lingered a while in the grounds of St Luke’s. It was lovely to see Dawn Page enjoying the day and a coffee at St Luke’s. The ladies from St George’s on the mountain enjoyed chatter and book
sales inside our church and it was very pleasing to know people were impressed with our beautiful building. Thank you most sincerely to everyone who came, spent money, bought raffle tickets or just enjoyed being there. We really appreciate your support, for without you we would not have raised a substantial amount of money, which will always be put back into maintaining our building and its surrounds. The celebration of Easter is upon us and this is a very important time in the life of all Christian churches. It is a time to renew and refresh our Christian role in the community. It is not just about
attending church and sharing God’s word with others but it is a time to show peace, love and care for our neighbours. Breast Cancer Survivor Helping Others with Porta Support
By Jo Kelly
You know that phone call is coming, the one that could possibly turn your life upside down and back to front … I even wore a bright purple ‘LOL’ T shirt that day to help make myself believe I was invincible. Sadly I wasn’t, was told that I had breast cancer and to come in as quickly as possible to see the surgeon. Well, you could have knocked me over with a feather. It was like I was in a haze of muffling noises with bits and pieces going on, but not really hearing or understanding, it is a feeling I won’t ever forget. There’s the long chats with specialists, the ‘why me’ popping up, (pretty much thinking this is still not happening), stuck at home with my beautiful husband, not too sure whether I am ready for that lunch, or tea but may try breakfast tomorrow, would love to have a wine but pretty sure that will taste terrible. Chemotherapy does strange things to one’s taste buds, after short period of time I was driving myself and the family batty. After the operation of having the porta cath inserted into my upper right chest, I found driving in the car with this amazing catheter rubbing under the seatbelt really uncomfortable. My husband, Grant, thought that if he could construct something that attached to the seat belt to elevate it off my porta cath it would help. He tinkered for a while, we got the shape right then he sent me into my
sewing haven to work on a fabric cover so it could be attached to the seatbelt, but with the option of sliding the cushion where needed on the belt. And that is how Porta Support came to be. I wanted to donate to an association with proceeds I would make from selling these cushions. The Breast & Prostate Cancer Association of Qld Inc does amazing work and has been supportive from my beginnings. I could now drive to the day room on my own to have treatment as well as give some cheek to the nurses, find an amazing friend, make sure I kept nodding ‘yes’ to everything, remembering appointment dates, to eat and also drink those litres and litres of water. Remembering back now I really had a blast and a laughed a lot. I feel having the right attitude helped me through too. I was once a person who wanted to do everything myself, hence my husband giving me my very own chainsaw for Christmas. With this disease I learnt pretty quickly, and found I didn’t get my own way that often and had to ask for help but with the understanding it wouldn’t last forever and to just go with the flow, I called those days ‘The Speed Bump’. These days are grand, our family is closer, every morning is awesome, I smile a lot and I have found it is still very contagious. Spread the word, there is comfort out there for those who have a porta cath.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Canungra Golf Course New Clubhouse
It was a pleasure to attend the opening celebration recently for the new clubhouse following the removal of the old building due to asbestos issues. Congratulations to all members for banding together with such determination, applying for grants and favours to get the modern and more purpose-built clubhouse and verandah completed. It is a tribute to you all and quite the most picturesque golf course in the area. Congratulations also on receiving $1000 in the recent Community Grants Program for some security cameras.
Parking Outside Canungra Pharmacy
A quarter hour parking spot has been allocated just down from the pharmacy to enable customers to more easily access the pharmacy during business hours 9am until 5.30pm.
Canungra Pool
After another successful swimming season the Canungra pool will close for the winter months from Thursday 2nd April. Thank you to Karen and her team from BlueFit for again keeping the pool immaculate and well run.
War Stories
The War Stories and Our Town program continues throughout the year so don’t forget to check the Council website www.scenicrim. qld.gov.au or pick up a War Stories Centenary Program from the Visitor Information Centre or Canungra Library. There are so many workshops and events, all with a wartime theme for all ages. A spectacular display of handcrafted poppies is worth a look at in the Canungra Library. Further workshops are to be held to teach interested residents how to craft these commemorative tributes at 2pm, Wednesday 15th April at the Canungra Library. Further information on these is available at the Canungra Library.

Tourism Update
Scenic Rim Regional Council continues to work with the regional tourism organisations such as Brisbane Marketing and Tourism Queensland to promote our beautiful region and increase the tourist visitations. You may have noticed the “Give Me Scenic Rim Any Day” advertisements on TV recently and the themed bus shelters in the Brisbane CBD promoting our spectacular rainforest scenery. Following on in the coming months we have the Arts and Studio Trails then Eat Local Week which will culminate in Winter Harvest Festival and a shared stand at the Ekka again with our neighbouring councils.

To Get to the Next Stage...
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Are you living in fear? During World War Two, my mother’s father fought for Australia in Papua New Guinea. My father’s father, an Italian immigrant, spent most this time in an internment camp in Cowra. It was thought at the time that immigrants from countries Australia was at war with posed a security threat, so they were sent away from their businesses, families and established lives. My grandmother (who was Australian) had a baby to support and spent the war years working, bringing up their daughter and sending packages to the camp wrapped in brown paper and string! What worries me today is there is a similar veil of fear which pervades the media, our government and our society. Every time something happens, there is a knee jerk reaction to try to protect every possible scenario from happening. We need to accept that sometimes, things do go wrong. We need to trust people, even if they look or act a little different to what we are used to, and we need to have faith. Not everyone who is different is bad, scary or out to get everyone else. Race, religion, mental and physical illness and many other factors make up the people of the world we live in. Sometimes things go wrong, but imagine what you will miss out on by living in a small protected bubble. Mum’s father fought for us to be free, not to live in fear. Be free.
Dear Editor Thank you to the many residents, businesses and community groups who responded to the Canungra & District Community Bank survey held over recent weeks. The independent consultants, MGI who conducted the survey will report their findings to the volunteer steering committee on 10th April The committee are confident that the report will find there is a desire and a need for a community bank in our town, HOWEVER we cannot go to the next stage of forming a board of directors and registering a prospectus UNTIL we reach our shareholder pledge target of 300 pledges for a minimum of $750,000. Thanks to the over 200 pledges of support totaling $687,500 that have been received at the time of writing. This a fantastic show of support from the people of the district who realise the enormous benefits of a LOCAL bank OWNED BY LOCALS, servicing the financial needs of our community and returns its profits back to the community groups in the form of grants, donations and sponsorships, as well as dividends to its local shareholders. So to any member of the community who has not yet registered an interest in becoming part owners of a local bank, or if you wish to
increase your pledge amount, the TIME IS NOW. Simply drop by the Bendigo Bank Agency in Lawton Lane, Canungra Newsagency, In the Raw Health Foods, Corporate & Country Accountants, go to our Facebook page or talk to our friendly volunteer Steering Committee at the various stalls held around town about registering your interest and lets build a community owned bank. Have Your Say! The Jewel in the Crown
To the editor, Well it’s that time of year again and our pool is closing down for winter. It took me a couple of years to pluck up the courage to use it, me being a senior and it being a public pool and all. When I did I found all my fears were totally unfounded and I now try to use it every day. The benefits to my health have been numerous. There are many people from near and far that love to use the pool and many others who I don’t believe know what they are missing out on. It is a beautiful and underused facility which I personally believe is the jewel in Canungra’s crown. I encourage anyone holding back like I was, to give it a go; you may really enjoy it. The Canungra pool is a spotless and well serviced amenity and my congratulations go to Karen and her staff for providing such a fine service to the town. Cheers, Mary Groves
Thank You
On 11th February I had a fall at the Caltex service station in Canungra. I’d like to thank the staff and the gentleman who helped at the time for assisting me. Carlene Johnson I changed my password everywhere to ‘incorrect.’ That way when I forget it, it always reminds me, ‘Your password is incorrect.’ Anonymous
“Our Family Caring For Yours”
It’s holiday time again and we expect Canungra and surrounds will receive an influx of visitors including day trippers and campers enjoying all the area has to offer. With the increase in visitor numbers comes extra traffic on the road. As you will no doubt see broadcast in the various media platforms leading into the Easter period, Police will be out on the road tasked with traffic enforcement attempting to keep all road users safe from the reckless and inattentive few. Logan and Coomera Road Policing Units, along with local Police, have been active in the area over the past month or so and I expect that will continue during the holiday break. We ask that everyone shows a little more patience during this period and plan ahead so that you aren’t rushing to get to work, an appointment or event. Better to be a few minutes late than not turn up at all which is the sad reality for a few hundred Queenslanders each year. We have received a couple of reports of a young male exposing himself down at Lions Park recently. The person in question has been identified and will be attending Court in the near future. We do not believe that this was an isolated incident and there may be other occasions that have not been reported to us. Unless Police catch someone in the act, which is pretty unlikely for this type of offence, we rely on victims and witnesses to come forward and provide us with the information. Without this assistance we cannot act and the offending party gets away with it. It’s certainly disturbing behaviour and could escalate if left unchecked. Please come and see us or contact the station if you have information on one of the below numbers: • Canungra Police 55435120, • Police Link on 131444 or • Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Our hard working Administrative Officer, Robyn, is having a well-earned break and will be on leave until 1st June 2015. As such we will not be able to provide Department of Transport services, including driver licence testing or renewals. Licence renewals can be done on-line at www.tmr. qld.gov.au, by attending the QGAP Office in Beaudesert or one of the Queensland Transport offices in the surrounding areas. Have a happy and safe Easter.

Well Being With Clancy Beck
Water
Did you know the best secret weapon for good health is free? We try to fix things like fatigue, irritability, depression, water retention, insomnia, fear, constipation, or headaches by ‘taking’ something, but these conditions can be caused by simply not drinking enough water. Since your body is about 70% water, inadequate water intake each day can negatively affect your blood and every cell in your body. Everybody has different requirements, but if your urine isn’t mostly clear or you have any of the symptoms above, it’s likely you aren’t getting enough H2O. Some suggest 8 glasses a day, or around 50ml per kilo bodyweight. The Benefits of Drinking Water: 1. Increases Energy and Relieves Fatigue – Since your brain is mostly water, drinking it helps you think, focus and concentrate better and be more alert. It also helps with insomnia. 2. Promotes Weight Loss – Aids digestion and fat metabolism, reduces food intake (drinking before meals fills your stomach), reduces hunger, raises your metabolism and has zero calories! 3. Flushes Out Toxins – Eliminates waste through urination allowing kidney and other organs to function better and keep cells healthy. 4. Improves Skin Complexion – Moisturizes your skin, keeps it fresh, soft, glowing and smooth. Gets rid of wrinkles. The best anti-aging treatment around! 5. Maintains Regularity – Aids in digestion and prevents constipation. 6. Boosts Immune System – Water oxygenates the blood assisting all body functions to operate adequately. Water is used in the production of lymph and flushes out toxins which weaken the immune system. 7. Prevent Headaches – Helps relieve and prevent headaches, migraines and back pains which are commonly caused by dehydration. 8. Prevents Cramps and Stiff Joints - Proper hydration helps keep joints lubricated and muscles more elastic so joint pain is less likely. 9. Feel Happier – Water enables seratonin to be produced, relieving depression and irritability. 10. Save Money! - Water is FREE! Even if you choose bottled/filtered water, it’s STILL the cheapest drink out there. If you find water unappetizing then add a squirt of lemon or lime, a sprig of fresh mint, or a cucumber or orange slice. You may not need to medicate, just hydrate!

This month I will be talking about some therapeutic-grade essential oils that may ease back pain. Wintergreen - Wintergreen contains 85-99% of methyl salicylate the same active ingredient as birch and, as an antispasmodic, it is beneficial in massage for soothing head tension and muscles after exercising. It is great for inflammation and arthritis. You can apply 2-4 drops directly on the location, or mix with a carrier massage oil. Ginger - Ginger can be effective in alleviating joint pain, which is especially useful for anyone with rheumatoid arthritis. Massage 1 drop directly onto the affected area. Copaiba – Copaiba is potentially the highest anti-inflammatory substance known to man, naturally or synthetically made. It also doesn’t have the side effects of an over-the-counter antiinflammatory. It may be effective for Lupus, Fibromyalgia, MS, Arthritis and other inflammatory conditions. Apply directly to the area of concern or dilute with a carrier oil if it feels too ‘hot’. PanAway - PanAway blend was created by Gary Young (founder of Young Living) following a severe injury to the ligaments in his leg. It includes several potent essential oils, including clove, which contains eugenol, a constituent commonly used in dentistry for numbing. PanAway is a blend containing, Wintergreen, Helichrysum, Clove and Peppermint. Apply directly on the area of pain or add to an Epsom salt bath. This is also a great oil if you have children with growing pains. Morphine Bomb – This pain relief capsule was also developed by Gary Young as a way to manage pain internally. Put 3-5 drops each of Balsam Fir, Copaiba and Frankincense oil in a gel capsule and take daily. Raindrop Technique – Raindrop Technique incorporates calming, energizing, and soothing essential oils with traditional massage practices. By integrating gentle massage sequences with specific essential oils, the experience balances energy, releases toxins, and facilitates open energy flow in the body. I only use and recommend Young Living Essential Oils as they are an extremely high quality, pure therapeutic-grade essential oil. This information is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any illness or disease, nor is it intended to replace proper medical help.

AWL Pets of the Month
Eleanor is a beautiful looking girl ready for a quiet home. She is a friendly doggy with lots of love to give, and is very people focused. She doesn’t mind saying hi to other dogs, but also won’t mind being your one and only at home. She will make a great companion with regular exercise and some training, so ask to meet her today! Eleanor is a four year old Australian Cattledog Cross Staffordshire Bull Terrier. She is only $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Coco is a nine year old boy who is happy just to laze around. He loves to sleep in bed with you and he will sit on your knee for a cuddle on his terms - he is a smoocher. Coco has only ever been an indoor cat so will need to be inside or with access to an enclosure if possible. Coco is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Adopting a ‘Senior’ such as Coco can be a very rewarding experience. These animals can still provide many years of companionship as the average lifespan of a cat is now 16, with many living to 20+ years, if they are well cared for! Older cats are more settled, calm and considerable less destructive than a kitten, making them ideal pets for older people or even families. Please note that adoption fees are subject to change as they are currently subsidised through sponsorship by Von Bibra Motors. Check the web site or phone for updates. To meet Elanor, Coco or any of the other animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Having fun at the CSRG working bee
Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds Inc
Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds Inc pride themselves on keeping the Showground well-maintained. Works undertaken include maintenance and improvements to grounds and infrastructure. The grounds are situated on the banks of the Canungra Creek and flank approximately 700 metres of creek frontage. The committee regularly undertakes weed management and minor revegetation works along the riparian zone as part of their maintenance program. The CSRG has remnant mature riparian species that provide a critical seed source for natural regeneration locally and these trees were under threat from vine weed species. The committee were successful in receiving a Queensland State Government Everyone’s Environment Grant for funded works spanning three years. Weed management and supplementary planting works are currently underway and these will support a future supply of endemic species seed stock. These projects combine to have a positive regional impact, with a well-vegetated buffer zone becoming increasingly resilient to high water events and provide protection against erosion. Quality weed management and site preparation works are undertaken by specialist contractors. Volunteer Working Bees supplement these works and focus on planting local native tubestock. To date CSRG have facilitated three Working Bees installing approximately 1500 stems. The CSRG Inc Committee would like to thank all those people who have been involved in this project. Thanks also to the funding support from Queensland Government and supply of plants from Scenic Rim Regional Council. The next working bee will be held in Spring and everyone is welcome. Dates will be confirmed later in the year. For more information about the CSRG Canungra Creek project please email ecojodie@hotmail.com.

Nature’s Gems
Travel Diary 2014 - Rottnest Island, Western Australia By Melissa Whitby Upon arriving home from Africa, I took a short break to see family and friends and then continued my wildlife journey closer to home. Western Australia is well-known for its natural wonders and that was where I travelled to next. \My first stop in Western Australia was to be Rottnest Island just off the coast from Perth. The easiest way for travellers to get to Rottnest Island is by boat or ferry. Rottnest Island is rich in history and a haven for wildlife. Many of the old buildings on the island date back to the colonial period and these are now used for accommodation for holidays-makers. One of the main reasons that I had travelled to Rottnest Island was to encounter the Quokka. This small, furry marsupial has declined in numbers on the mainland and islands such as Rottnest provide a safe environment. Within minutes of arriving on the island, I was to have the pleasure of encounters several Quokkas at close quarters thanks to a Rottnest voluntary guide. I also joined the Quokka Walking tour on my day visit, which provided an amazing insight into Quokkas, and more amazing close-up encounters!
Rottnest Island is also a haven for birds. Several large salt lakes are located on the island and these are full of brine shrimp. The brine shrimp provide a stable food sources for birds such as Banded Stilts, Ruddy Turnstones, Red-capped Plover, Australian Shelduck, White-fronted Chat and several tern species. Consequently, most of my day visit on Rottnest Island was spent photographing the amazing array of birds and the Quokkas. Rottnest Island has something for everyone to experience. I went to Rottnest Island to encounter the wildlife, but realised that one day is just not enough to experience this amazing island! So, for anyone interested in visiting Rottnest Island, I would recommend booking yourself into accommodation on the island and let the exploring begin!

The Scenic Rim Cultural Centres’ School Holiday Program is open for bookings - it is recommended to get in early as numbers are limited. The program for the April school holidays, runs from Tuesday 7th to Friday 17th April, includes five movies to choose from along with workshops and educational, hands-on projects. As with many of this year’s activities, these workshops have an Anzac theme. The very popular cooking classes with Kate Raymont from Hinterland Harvest will have children creating biscuits and slices using the recipes of yesteryear with Anzac biscuits, taking centre stage. These workshops for ages eight years and over are at the Centre Beaudesert, Boonah Cultural Centre and Vonda Youngman Community Centre at Tamborine Mountain, at a cost of $12. Children will learn how to draw in the Anzac Animals Cartoon Workshop at Beaudesert and Boonah. Phil Judd, of Footrot Flats fame, will take this workshop. Seven years and over are able to attend this workshop also for $12. Council’s Be Healthy & Active program has a Hip Hop Workshop with Lyrical Equations. There are limited places in these free workshops, so registrations are required. There are a range of kids flicks on at both Beaudesert and Boonah cultural centres: The Boxtrolls (PG), Dolphin Tale 2 (G), The House of Magic (G) and Paddington (G). Pudsey the Dog: The Movie (G) is also showing, however only at the Boonah Cultural Centre. Paddington will screen three times on Friday 10th April at Boonah as it coincides with the regular Friday Flicks. The libraries will be hosting many more activities, from storytelling to skateboarding tuition, so there is something for everyone in this World of Fun School Holiday Program. Pick up a brochure from Canungra Library or download it from www. liveatthecentre.com.au.

NUDE FOOD DAYS
Green Team News
By Fiona Williams, greenteamcss@gmail.com
As part of Canungra State School’s commitment to encourage students to be environmentally aware, the School has NUDE FOOD days. For those of you who are new to the school, NUDE FOOD Days are when we ask everyone to bring RUBBISH FREE lunches. Some ideas for NUDE FOOD • Bring fruit and put the peelings in the compost bin. • Bring drinks in reusable drink bottles. • Bring unwrapped sandwiches in reusable plastic containers. The School asks you to support our NUDE FOOD (Rubbish free) Days, Tuesdays and Thursdays.
We had another busy month during March. We had a fantastic response to our first working bee, thanks to you all for coming out on such a hot day and helping out for our Clean up Australia Day event. We have just held our Connect to Your Creek celebrations and I would like to thank everyone who joined in and helped to make it another successful venture this year. Kara from Canungra Yoga held the attention of some of our younger students for Yoga by the Creek and from all accounts it was very successful! There is a rumour it may become a regular event but stay tuned to Canungra Yoga’s

DESIGN BRIEF & RESPONSE Derived from the formal Brief contained in the Service Agreement 1. bring a sense of Structure, Order and Organisation over the whole site through an imaginative layout 2. allow for all the different recreational, productive and functional activities in a unified way 3. to express the site as a unified whole, with sub-zones fitting the overall theme 4. to explore ‘Productive’ practicalities within an imaginative configuration i) extensive perennial and annual beds including herbs, medicinal and cosmetic in raised beds and on ground, and to propose both an easier method and functional configuration ii) augment existing fruit trees in a cordinated way iii) expand the chicken / egg production iv) integrated compost processing location 5. Entries to be strengthened 6. Passive recreation areas to be formalised 7.more shade and coordinated mass planting 8. create a diverse range of nooks for a diverity of ways to use use and enjoy the site 9. propose a configuration for both pedestrian and vehicular access, including on-site garage and workshop. 10. explore the potential for income producing accomodation options with private courtyards
CONCEPT SKETCH
SITE FUNCTION
Radial zoning derived from the site analysis centred on the core of the site, the mid point betwen the house and the upper terrace area. From this point both functional and aesthetic
Activity zones that harmonised both the appearence and functionality of the whole site., as well providing a basis for Staged works depending on priorities
ZONES LIVING: Primary living area outside with Pavilion, higher viewing area and access to all areas further out into the yard OPEN SPACE: Central ordering and Recreational space from which all main aspects of the yard are accessible SERVICE: Carparking or garage space with frequently used elements from which the yard is accessible by vehicle. PRIVATE: Adjacent to the two main bedrooms looking east with potential access to individual private spaces. RAINFOREST: Existing vegetated space as Entry Feature and possible internal spaces. PRODUCTIVE: Planted Beds rfor annuals and perrenials with full exposure to sun PRODUCTIVE: Tree and Orchard crops grouped. Fenced with chook access all round. WORKSHOP: and storage area with access through to the Open Space area. Alternate hangout. VERGE AREA: Maintenance and Visitor Parking
OPTIONS
Option 1

Option 2
MASS PLANTING
The Options show three alternate Layouts which integrate the Design Brief with the existing site conditions in a designed manner expressed through both the Concept Sketch and Function drawings. i) Option 1 organically irregular broad curves defining the main spaces establish a structured order over the whole site, whilst providing an informal feeling.

Option 3

GRAVEL PATH
CONCRETE PATH
CONCRETE PATH
ii) Option 2 a more formal geomentric definition to all the main spatial zones imparts a more visually structured order and flow through the whole site with a crisper delineation between the different areas. A greater sense of unity of the whole site , this option would also experineced as far more informal on te ground iii) Option 3 pure rectilinear formality provides the most obvious and striking sense of visual structure and order. The scale of the site and the configuration of the sub--spaces still allows extended views ‘through spaces maintaning a ’big site feel’ within a more manageable layout. Each Option allows for maximised opportunities to include all the desired elements in a unified manner over the whole site The difference zones are structurally acheived by a broadly precise setout, attention to level ground planes, and the degree of edge definition. (eg: aim for pads with gradients of max1:50 falls. The configurations shown will require max 400cut and a similar fill in some locations only)

Facebook page for more info. We had the Year 2’s and Canungra Community Kindergarten also spent time with us on the creek which we thoroughly enjoyed. We also had our first workshop for Up the Creek and Down the Drain which is an Australian Curriculum and C2C aligned education unit that uses a Storythread approach to teach primary school children (Grade 4-6). The unit provides a powerful tool that allows students and teachers to engage emotionally and intellectually with a local waterway, in ways that encourage positive action and behaviour change. The Green Team is very excited to be able to support this type of learning in our school and we will be hosting another workshop at school later in the year.

Before you truly get into gear, there needs to be rather a lot of prodding. With a series of planets wending their way through the fires of Aries, you are truly blessed with existentially gifted motivating factors. Every reminder to move you get, is a gift of love. Dance, don’t fight.

Even though it will appear that life has you in a pressurecooker, there is a strong shift away from having to be endlessly disciplined. Moments of senseless beauty will slip through, like breaks in the clouds. Treasure these islands of clear vision and aesthetic wonderment, like gold.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The Sun journeys through Aries, adding an added adventurous edge, to your already passionate nature. Not only will you be feeling so alive that it’s scary, you will be prone to setting yourself into action, in feisty and unexpected ways. Do things, make mistakes - and learn for real.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Clues: Across 2 Keeping a firm hold of principles etc
As Mercury wends his way through Aries, so he sets off a series of fire-crackers in your heart and mind. Possibilities open up. Whilst so impassioned, limits that you had previously set on yourself will suddenly disappear. With this, comes a time of experimentation and real-life learning.

This is a very good month for Aries. The Sun, Mercury and Uranus are all in Aries, giving you vitality, clarity and an unrequited desire for freedom. Mars, your planetary motor, is in Taurus, ensuring that you harness your impulses and put them into meaningful creative activity.

Canungra Rainfall - March 2015
You will eventually settle down into something resembling ease – but before that happens Mercury will transit through Aries, bringing all sorts of sudden, disorienting shifts and changes. You have somewhere wished for these things. To know this, makes them welcome adventures.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
The Moon will be full in Libra this month. This behoves a highly-charged reflective time, in which to assess your achievements up to now. You are challenged, that’s for sure. This Moon should give you the strength to meet these challenges head-on. Be fortified and beautified.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Slowly, life is leading you back into the three-ringed circus of relationship. That which you have needed to attend to on your own, is near enough to completion for you to be able to look outwards to the world at large. Seek the connections you need to set in place, to expand the next step.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Saturn is retrograde in Sagittarius. This is a time for shedding old skin. It is a once in thirty year cleanout of the non-essential. Old patterns of escape and long distance travel are going to be on-line for change. Saturn means business, and the business is entering wisdom, at all costs.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
Pluto continues to appear to go backwards. He is digging you deeper and deeper into the ground of your being. It is time to mine into discovering the true nature of your motives, especially around work and career. Are you being driven by the pure gold of your essence? If so, great!

An exhibit from the Beaudesert and District Orchid and Foliage Show
With Uranus in Aries, your passion for freedom can only really be explored and expressed in action. The time for sitting around and eloquently cogitating, is long over. Life is leaning on you in no uncertain terms to have the adventures that in one way or another, will liberate you.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
To be a healing force for another human being, one has to at least have a cursory sense of one’s own healing journey. The presence of Chiron, the wounded healer, in Pisces, keeps your attention on the whole journey of healing. Make it personal and it will deliver you a thousand gems. © M.J.Dean 2014

T20 Cricket Continues
By Stu Comley
Another brilliant day of T20 cricket was enjoyed by all on Sunday 16th March, with the crowd swelling to about 50 this month. Team Rhys were beaten by Team Richard in a day full of laughs and amusement. April’s game will be held on Sunday 26th April. Man of the Match was Mick “Cracker” Mahony. It has been suggested that the Match fee be raised to $5pp, which will cover the costs of trophies, advertising and will also provide for a FREE feed for the players between innings. Spectators can purchase food, drinks and snacks on the day. Notable performances on the day were: Team Rhys 84 All out Brian H. b Dan 20 Rhys b Kieran 34 Extras 8 Page 32

Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month
The FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month is for January is Josh Aiken. Josh has for many years been an outstanding athlete and great all rounder. Having suffered an injury last year Josh has fought back to be seriously ‘on track’ with his sport once again. Josh plays top level NPL in his age group in the Gold Coast Zone for soccer and is also a budding referee, being keen to learn and improve and always happy to help out at Canungra Josh Aiken Soccer Club. He represented Queensland last year in Futsal and represents Beaudesert High School in soccer, Futsal, volleyball and touch football. He is an enthusiastic, determined and well mannered young man and I am sure he will excel in whatever he chooses to pursue. As the Sportspeople of the Month, Josh receives a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks. To nominate someone you know for the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Month, contact Bren Dalby on 0414 435 919 or pick up a nomination form from The Canungra Times office.
Canungra Owls Soccer News
By Bren Dalby
With the first weekend of games under our belt I think we are easing in to the enjoyable part of the season with most teething issues resolved ... and there have been some beauties this year that I have fortuitously never had to address before. I thank all those who helped with the dilemma of the Under 15 team issues in particular. Our new Bendigo Bank strips were worn by the Under 15 team on Friday night and looked great. Thank you to all parents who helped and offered yet more help in the canteen etc - when we get set up properly the gig is yours! Saturday morning was full on with 11 teams playing at home! A huge thank you to Danny and Shelley Gordon of Danny Gordon Seafoods who supplied us with a $60 seafood tray voucher to raffle ... this raised the club $147 and was won by Dave Aiken who was pretty happy to say the least!! Page 36
Danny and Shelley have also sponsored our Under 12 team this year which is magic! The canteen was a bit of a whirlwind on Saturday with over five dozen bacon and egg rolls made as well as the usual chips etc. Our referees were great ... couple of new refs had their first run - well done Mitchell and Aiden! Connah dealt wonderfully with an opposition parent who seemed adamant he knew the rules better than the ref!! Josh Bell McNee was hijacked to ref when he just came along for a cruisy morning and Josh Aiken had a crack at centre ref! Thank you to you all! Anyone wishing to get involved with refereeing please see Bren at soccer anytime for more info. Let’s get into our soccer in whatever way we can and keep this integral part of our community a happy and healthy environment. Go the Owls !!

Opening of New Clubhouse for Canungra Golfers
Almost 100 people gathered at the Canungra Area Golf Club for the official opening of the new Clubhouse on Sunday 15th March 2015. The Club faced a challenge two years ago when the old Clubhouse was condemned by the Department of Defence, who own the golf course and building. Club President John Grimshaw congratulated the Club members on the work they had put into the new building, thanked the State Government fro the grant the Club had received and thanked local businesses and residents for their contributions. The Clubhouse was primarily constructed with volunteer labour, with Club members donating their time and working bees held regularly over the past two years. The new Clubhouse is situated behind the first tee, overlooking the course and the mountains behind. It is air-conditioned and also has a verandah overlooking the course. Lt Col Mark Fletcher of the Department of Defence cut the ribbon on behalf of Col Dave Hafner. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause, Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent and Deputy Mayor Virginia West all attended the opening and praised the Canungra community for the support they have given the Golf Club. John Brent said it is occasions like these, where the community has really pulled together to make something happen, that makes him proud to be Mayor of the Scenic Rim. “Canungra has always been a close community and a community that makes things happen, he said. For more information about the Canungra Area Golf Club, contact the Club on 5543 4620 or visit the Club at Alloah Road, Canungra.
