Polling Booth Mix Ups Frustrate Voters

The Scenic Rim Division 3 Election has been a cliffhanger, with both candidates on 1288 votes at close of counting on election day, Saturday 19th March. At the time of printing the Division 3 Councillor’s election has Virginia West 56 votes ahead of Steve Moriarty. Virginia is expected to be declared Councillor by the Returning Officer on Thursday 31st March. However, several Division 3 voters came forward saying they had been denied the right to vote for Councillor at the Canungra and Tamborine Village polling booths due to mix ups at polling booths. The confusion seems to have been caused in part by some Electoral Commission officials at the booths working with an unfamiliar computer system and, while there was an election for Councillor in Division 3, the incumbent Division 2 Councillor Nadia O’Carroll was running unopposed. Ken Gear of Canungra said he visited the polling booth at approximately 3pm. Ken was unsure which Division he was in and approached the Division 2 table, giving his name and address to the Electoral Commission official at the table. He was told he was in Division 2 and was given two ballot papers, one for Mayor and the other for the four year term referendum. When he asked for the Councillor ballot paper he was told by the Electoral Commission official, “She is running unopposed.”

Ken Gear - told he was in Division 2

Ken says he thought Steve Moriarty must have dropped out at the last minute and then went to vote. After he placed his ballot papers in the boxes, he spoke to his wife, Maree, and realised a mistake had been made. Ken returned to the Division 2 table and told the same worker he had seen a few minutes earlier that an error had been made. Ken says the worker looked his name and address up again and said “Whoops” but when Ken asked for a Councillor ballot paper he was refused because he had “already voted”.

Another voter at the Canungra booth (who did not want to be named) had the same experience at approximately the same time as Ken, and realised that evening that a mistake had been made. At the Tamborine Village polling booth, Maxine Daley says after identifying her, the official peeled voting ballot papers for the referendum and mayoral voting. She waited to receive the third ballot paper for the local division councillor and was told by the official that Division 3 was unopposed. Continued page 5

Polling Booth Mix Ups Frustrate Voters Continued from page 3

Maxine says she questioned this as she knew two people were standing for election for Division 3. The official repeated what she had said but did not say any name. “I presumed one of the contenders must have withdrawn,” said Maxine. “As there was no voting ballot paper available, I therefore lost my right to vote for Division 3.” “I completed the other two electoral voting forms and placed them in the appropriate boxes. “There was no box provided for Division 3 ballot papers because from my experience, and I presume other voters eligible to vote for Division 3, no voting ballot papers were handed out to voters for this Division at this polling booth,” she said. Maxine said she has voted at the Tamborine Village booth for Federal, State and Local elections and has never had a problem.

When contacted about the incidents at the Canungra booth, the Electorial Commission replied by email, stating that the incident has been investigated.. ‘As a result of our inquiries we are confident that every voter who came to that booth that day was given a vote in their correct division. Furthermore, official records for the booth have been examined and there are no irregularities in the paper work.” The Commission is satisfied that no anomalies exist and the matter will not be taken any further.’ The Commission did not ask for details of Ken Gear or the other person at Canungra who had been unable to vote for Division 3 Councillor and did not contact them. The Canungra Times has since contacted the Electorial Commission of Queensland regarding Maxine Daley’s experience at the Tamborine Village booth and is awaiting a response.

New Mayor for Scenic Rim

Business Coach Greg Christensen is set to be the new Mayor of the Scenic Rim Regional Council. Greg took the lead in the Mayoral votes after preferences were counted with former Beaudesert Shire Deputy Mayor, Dave Cockburn ahead on first preferences. Greg made the following statement on his Facebook page on Tuesday 29th March: “I’d like to acknowledge the other candidates, and particularly Dave Cockburn. Dave and I have sat in the counting room together for the last 9-10 days, and it’s been hard work for both of us to watch and wait. I wish Dave the very best for his next endeavours.” “Finally today, I want to express deep thanks and appreciation to all of my supporters. To everyone who’s been part of the campaign: thank you so much. Denise and I have been humbled by the diversity of people who have made this their campaign.” “The challenge for us all from here, is to move beyond the competitive atmosphere of an election campaign to a focus on collaboration to build the future of the Scenic Rim. I look forward to working with you all to do this.” This result includes votes counted up to and including Tuesday 29th March, when postal votes were closed. It is expected to be declared by the returning officer on Thursday 31st March.

Anzac Day Services in Our Region

Last year, Canungra’s Dawn and Main Services set new attendance records and this year troops in uniform from Kokoda Barracks and a Drum and Pipe band will add military precision and spectacle to the Anzac Day march on Monday 25th April. Stepping off at 9.30am from Canungra State School, an estimated 120 serving personnel will lead Canungra RSL Sub Branch members, veterans, community groups

and State School students along Christie Street to the historic memorial in D J Smith Park for the Main service and wreath laying. For many, the tradition of Anzac Day observance will start in the silence of early dawn at 5.30am in Canungra’s D J Smith Park. A stirring Dawn service with lone piper will remember the brave actions of those who landed on the distant Gallipoli shore and those who suffered or

made the ultimate sacrifice on the Western Front. In Beechmont, a Service will be held at Graceleigh Park with registration and parade at 11.15am and the Service commencing 11.30am. World War One letters from Beechmont soldiers on the Western Front will be read and Beechmont State School students will give tributes. The Beechmont State School Choir will also perform.

Most Successful Orchid and Foliage Show O’Reilly’s 90 Years of Eco-Tourism By Peter Rice, Secretary, BDOFS

Beaudesert and Districts Orchid and Foliage Society’s Autumn Show was the most successful ever held. Over the weekend of 12th and 13th March, more than 780 visitors passed through the door to be met by a magnificent exhibition of orchid blooms and foliage plants. There were 156 orchids and 135 foliage plants benched for judging, whilst on the stage was a massed display set amongst a myriad of ferns in hanging baskets and bromeliads on the floor. Society member, Lee Thorneycroft, won Grand Champion Foliage Plants of the Show. Merv Stewart from Logan and District Orchid Society won Grand Champion Orchid. Approximately $2,400 in prize money was handed out this show, much of which was raised by the Garden Hamper Raffle. The prizes for the raffle are primarily provided by sponsors,

including Rocky Point Mulching, Terra Firma Fertilisers, Beaudesert Mitre 10 and Seasol with Searles, Cedar Creek Estate Winery, The Cobble Patch, Scott’s Fertilisers and Botanica Garden Products. The prizewinners were: • First: D Zonka of Rothwell. • Second: J Balmer of Beaudesert • Third: N Church of Redcliffe. • Lucky Door Prize was won by P Kennish of Mt Gravatt. I would like to express my gratitude to all who contributed to the Show’s success. It was marvelled at by members of larger societies and appreciated by ordinary visitors who visit every show and realise that ours really is a show and an event well worth attending.

Queensland’s iconic eco-tourism property, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat today celebrates 90 years since first opening the Guest House doors in 1926. To thank the 960,000 guests they’ve welcomed over the past 90 years the family operated Retreat is rewarding travellers with 90 free holidays. Simply submit an online entry to oreillys. com.au and state in 50 words or less why you or someone you know deserves a holiday to escape, experience and connect. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat third generation Managing Director Shane O’Reilly said the anniversary is a significant point in time for his past and present family members and he is extremely proud of the business’ accomplishments. The Minister for Tourism and Major Events Kate Jones congratulated Mr Shane O’Reilly at the Roma Street Parklands – once the starting point for a two-day journey via train to Beaudesert and horse and cart to experience the World Heritage-listed Lamington National Park. The 90 Holiday Giveaway runs until to 30th of December with winners being announced regularly until then.

Canungra FoodWorks Epic 9th Birthday Party

On Saturday March 19th Canungra FoodWorks celebrated nine years in the community with an extravagant Birthday Party featuring an off the truck sale. The atmosphere was electric as customers were in awe of the never before seen specials inside and outside of the store. Inside the store you could see Chicken Drumsticks for $1, barbecue Chickens for $4, Chicken Breast for $6 and hundreds of other great specials. Outside, the Supermarket’s own Farmer Darryl brought a huge array of fresh produce straight from his farm and spent all day spruiking on the microphone to let the local community know what bargains the Supermarket had. Farmer Darryl and the Canungra FoodWorks team, including local cowboys and girls, were busy as the prices dropped to 20c for a bag of carrots, 50c for a whole watermelon and the prices continued to get crazier as the day wore on. A sausage sizzle was run by the Canungra Owls Soccer Club with all supplies donated by Canungra FoodWorks. Hungry customers couldn’t believe their luck when they realised they were giving away the sausages for FREE. In fact, for every sausage given away Canungra FoodWorks donated $2 to the Club. Thanks to the local community a total of $1,540 was raised on the day. This is not the first time Canungra FoodWorks has supported local community groups, events, clubs and initiatives. Since the Supermarket opened in 2007 more than $30,000 has been given to the local community each year totalling nearly $300,000. Other recent initiatives include sponsorship of Moriarty Park Sportsperson of the Year award and Canungra Owl’s Soccer Away Jerseys. Tony Nguyen (Owner) said: “This is a fantastic day. We are proud and humbled to receive such great support from our local communities over the past 9 years. This is our way of saying thank you.” “We are in the process of a $1 million dollar major refurbishment to strengthen our position whilst increasing the shopping experience of our valued customers.” “We are embedded in the local communities and we will be here for many years to come.” Bren Dalby, a local and ex-president of the Canungra Owls Soccer Club, said, “The community is appreciative of Canungra FoodWorks invaluable support and is excited to see the store’s refurbishments. We will continue to support FoodWorks into the future.”

Pool Closure

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Doing Nothing... While families were filling their cars with camping gear and heading to Canungra Showgrounds over Easter, we had a quieter plan. We did nothing. Well, when I say we did nothing, I worked from home on and off, walked the dogs, pottered about the garden and spent time with the kids. One child had friends over and the other spent most of the four day Easter break in her PJ’s her favourite way to spend her holidays! My partner studied and pottered about and when I think about I’m not really sure how we filled out time in, but I know it was good. There was no pressure to do a lot of stuff, no hassling about going places and who is doing what and do we have everything and what did we forget and who forgot it. I was a relief, I can tell you. I discovered we have space for more vegetable gardens at the house, and spent time with the dogs. Read a great book (Anh Do ‘The Happiest Refugee’), watched a movie with my daughter, and we had Easter Sunday barbecue breakfast together. Finished off the weekend catching up with friends up the road. We slowed down. It was great! I hope to be doing more of it. In this media-drenched, data-rich, channelsurfing, computer-gaming age, we have lost the art of doing nothing, of shutting out the background noise and distractions, of slowing down and simply being alone with our thoughts. (Carl Honoré)

Dear Keer, As I write this our votes are still being counted, but I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our successful Councillor. We are looking forward to an action packed and transparent term ahead. I have recently contacted council regarding the pool closing a month before the end of their, Be Healthy and Active, program. This leaves many locals in the lurch, having to bypass a perfectly good facility and drive an hour return for remedial swimming. This is obviously an oversight. As rate payers in 2016, we are naturally unhappy about this and are hoping that this situation can be subsidised and rectified to include the month of April. With Canungra’s new subdivision, it is probably time to look at further development at the pool and longer seasons, perhaps with the many grants available. After all, why would anyone bear the cost, labour and water wastage of a home pool while this beautiful facility is available near by for all to enjoy. We poolies anticipate positive action once the elections have subsided. Regards, Mary Groves

Canungra & District Needs You.

Without your support right now the Canungra and Districts Community Bank® will not happen. A local bank can do amazing things for our community. This is how it works - Individuals, families, businesses, SMSF, trusts etc from the local community buy shares in the locally owned company that partners with the Bendigo Bank . The capital is used for branch fitout, expenses and franchise fees. When the local bank business becomes profitable, part of the profit is returned to the shareholders as dividends and most is returned to the local community. This is what the Community will get. The following are extracts from news letters from existing Community Banks®: • In late 2015, the Hervey Bay Community Bank® issued 17 sports bursaries valued at $250 each to assist local families with the costs of junior sports participation, including membership, uniforms, equipment and travel. • Milton and Districts & Sussex Inlet Community Bank® branches zippy little Toyota Yaris ensures that locals needing to attend vital appointments and events can get from point A to point B without any hassle. • A dollar matching grant from York Community Bank® Branch has enabled the York Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service (YVFRS) to buy state of the art equipment to improve safety and efficiency. So imagine the benefits to our local area. In fact, Bendigo Bank has already been supporting the local community by paying for fireworks for Canungra show, sponsoring the bowls club, providing a community EFTPOS machine for the local sports clubs sign on days, paying for the rego on the local RSL community bus and paying for the jerseys for the local soccer club. It will take a couple of years for the local banking business to be profitable, so in the mean time Bendigo Bank immediately supports the local community by offering us funds to support community projects. The local community benefits as soon as the local Community Bank® branch opens. This is only possible with the opening of the full services Canungra & District Community Bank®. Our capital raising is half way there to getting the bank open. Shares are $1 each and as little as $500 can make a big difference. So where the bloody hell are you? Please support yourself and the local community and buy shares in the local Bendigo Community Bank®. See the agency for further details. John Fortescue

Canungra Police Watch

Another busy month in and around Canungra with traffic crashes, domestic disturbances and a few break and enters. Two break and enters occurred at unoccupied houses on Main Western Road which falls into the Canungra Police Division. The other was in Riverbend Drive on 11th March. Most concerning about this break-in was that it happened in a very short space of time while the occupants were taking the kids to school and attending to morning errands. If anyone sees people or vehicles in their street that don’t look right, please make a note of what you see and let us know as soon as possible. Sometimes it will be nothing, other times it could be the vital piece of information we need to solve or preferably stop a crime occurring. In this case we’re waiting on the results from forensic testing and will hopefully have a result in the near future. Shame it doesn’t happen as fast as on CSI. I’ve pulled over a few drivers for travelling too close and driving too slow along with the usual speeders and hoons. Tailgating is the cause of many accidents and shows a lack of patience and consideration for other drivers. While drivers travelling well below the speed limit aren’t lacking in patience, they don’t show consideration for the line-up of cars behind them that sometimes take unnecessary risks to get past. Be aware of your surroundings and drive with consideration and we go a long way towards everyone getting home safely. Seven people were picked up for drink driving and two for driving with a relevant drug in their system in the last month. This is way too many. Some of the drink drivers were coming from the pub while others had been at

Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Police Station

home or elsewhere. The Canungra Hotel and RSL both have courtesy buses so there is no excuse to drive home. You will see that we drive through the carpark and the streets surrounding the licenced premises, and yes, part of the reason for that is to see what cars are there so we know who to pull over when we see them later. The drug driving tests are conducted by Police from other areas. The test shows if a relevant drug (read illegal drug) is in the driver’s system. Under the current legislation there is no requirement to show levels of drug in the system, just that it’s there and has

been used. Traces of drugs can remain in the system for 48 hours or more, so if you are a regular or occasional user of drugs it is best to avoid driving or risk losing your licence for a minimum of one month plus the associated Court fine. On Sunday 6th March, the Canungra Village Garden Project (CVGP) team hosted a Clean Up Australia Day activity followed by the inaugural Watermelon Feast. Canungra State School Principal Kylie Todhunter let the team use the beautiful creek-side amphitheatre and surrounds for both events. There was a great turn out of adults and children, and the CVGP team want to thank everyone who volunteered their time and muscle. As it happens, the school staff and students maintain the area impeccably, so the job wasn’t a tough one ... some of the kids were actually racing to be the next person to find and pick up a piece of rubbish. It was encouraging to see so many from within our community participating to keep our Scenic Rim scenic. After the Clean Up Australia Day activity, the team hosted our first Watermelon Feast. There was a lovely gathering of people, with lots of watermelon to be had. The highlight of the day for the kids was the watermelon relay, and finishing with a final hurrah of smashing watermelons. There were chunks of pink juicy watermelon hoisted high in the air for the victorious, as the kids scrabbled for the biggest piece they could sink their teeth into, and big watermelon smiles all around. The produce competition saw two winners: Austin Anthony for his golden watermelon, and Jack and Summer O’Brien for their beautiful produce. Next year’s Feast will be even bigger and better - don’t miss it!

Well Being With Clancy Lee Beck

Live Your Life To better serve clients with their health goals I’m currently doing a 12-month coaching program to discover the issues behind weight gain. Last week I had to answer the following question “If you were to teach and speak about something for the remainder of your career, what would you teach and speak about?” I was somewhat surprised with my answer:“Life is not a rehearsal! Get out there and experience everything you can. Follow your dreams, however crazy or scary they seem. Because something amazing happens when you step out of your comfort zone - you realise you are more than you first thought. You find a strength and ability you never knew you had. You realise that qualities you thought belonged to others, are actually your own. More things are achievable than you think, so never stop turning over stones or looking for answers - there is always a way to make your desires happen. Grab life by the horns, and don’t let ‘life’ or excuses hold you back!” Although not strictly a ‘health’ message - it summed up exactly what’s needed to bust through the weight loss or fitness barrier. Every single sentence applies to your health journey. You’ve got to get uncomfortable. You’ve got to want it like your life depends on it - because it does. I’ve cycled across Australia, scaled mountains in Nepal, kayaked shark-infested waters, and walked alone through central Australia. All of those things made me want to cry, curl up and hide, and caused me so much pain and exhaustion I wished I’d never started. But those were the things that made me who I am. And they are the experiences now that I cherish the most. Because I discovered the message that forms the answer I gave. Life is there for the taking, whoever is brave enough to take it!

Welcome to the New Raw

New owners of Canungra’s health food store In The Raw, Linda and Mark Stollznow, have been locals for many years. They have been growing organic fruit and vegetables and looking after their bees at Linmar Farm in the beautiful Biddaddaba Valley. They took over In The Raw in October 2015 and now they are supplying their own shop with fresh, raw honey and their own produce. Having been involved with The Green Shed on Tamborine Mountain for many years, Linda and Mark understand the demand and need for fresh, local organic produce. “We know many great growers and suppliers and we are able to bring their produce to be sold in a very short time frame from being picked, meaning the customer is getting the freshest and healthiest food possible,” said Linda. They have already increased the range of products available, with the focus on local produce such as Greenlee Farm’s macadamia nuts, nitrate free bacon and ham and organic milk. People with specific dietary requirements including gluten free, dairy free, vegan and paleo can drop into In The Raw to pick up a range of foods available. Linda and Mark have also recently added a range of bulk foods in bins which will help keep prices down and reduce packaging waste. Customers can bring their own containers in or paper bags are available. There is a great selection available or, if you don’t see what you want, ask if they can get it in for you. In The Raw is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm and Saturdays from 9am to 2.30pm.

Richmond Birdwing Butterfly Ornithoptera Richmondia

By Susan Cully Our butterflies are big, beautiful and bountiful. Bountiful because, in the valleys and mountain tops of the Canungra district there is an overlap of northern and southern species. More than 100 species are represented in this locality. The Richmond Birdwing Butterfly is certainly big and beautiful. With a wingspan of 16cm, the male is iridescent green and marked with yellow and red on the underside; the female is black and white and marked with ruffles and dots of colour on the underside. This butterfly once existed in vast numbers in eastern Australia. With loss of its subtropical rainforest habitat, its numbers have become dangerously low. Action has been taken by the EPA to restore wild populations by breeding the butterfly in captivity and releasing them in the wild. The Richmond Butterfly Conservation Network has planted thousands of host vines, Pararistolochia praevenosa and P. laheyana, the only source of food for the caterpillars. If you wish to introduce this butterfly to your own garden you will need to: 1. Remove any Dutchman’s pipe Aristolochia elegans in your neighbourhood. The leaves are toxic and kill the butterfly caterpillar as it tries to have its first meal, 2. Plant Pararistolochia praevenosa in sheltered spots in your garden where it can be allowed to climb, 3. Plant nectar plants such as lilly pillies, bottlebrushes and pentstemons. In Queensland, populations are now concentrated in two centres: To the north, in the hinterland of the Sunshine Coast; and to the south, in the hinterland of the Gold Coast, including Tamborine, the Land Warfare Centre and Beechmont. Amazingly, a single vine in Beechmont is providing such robust, healthy butterflies that individuals are regularly captured in Beechmont and taken to the Sunshine Coast sites for breeding purposes, in much the same way that cattle breeders use prize-winning animals to produce the best animals. In Queensland, it is illegal to capture Male (top) and female (bottom) Butterfly. Photo: Gunther Schmida a protected species without the relevant permit. The Richmond Birdwing butterfly is a protected species. If you have sightings to report or would like further information contact Caring for Plateaus (michaelandsusancully@skymesh.com.au).

News from St Luke’s

Suduko

By Di Ayscough

Easter has just been celebrated in many homes and at St Luke’s. Does this mean you ate too many Easter Eggs or does it mean you feel the sense of new life and a new beginning? I have been astounded by the number of Easter eggs, rabbits, trains and many other pieces of chocolate all packed onto the supermarket shelves for Easter sale. Do you ever stop and wonder what this is all about, or just how expensive the chocolates were and yet by Easter Sunday the shelves were bare? Somehow we feel the pressure to buy these items and yet with little thought to the reason why. The egg was adopted around the 13th century by the Christian Church to represent the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the symbol of new life. The rabbit was also associated with new life due to their rapid rate of breeding. So what does this all mean to us? Let’s hope that somewhere amidst the chocolates, the excited children and the empty pockets from such spending, we do all think about the resurrection and the chance to start afresh with life. The recent Car Boot Sale at St Luke’s was a wonderful success both financially and for the number of people who came, purchased an item or two, enjoy the social atmosphere or just simply to see inside St Luke’s. Thank you to all who came, spent and enjoyed the day. Thank you to Irene for being the “Raffle Queen”. Once again Irene did an amazing job selling tickets and she was very pleased to deliver the prizes to the winners in our community. This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB With Mary Groves Sheila Mills, Canungra’s 95 year old golfer, played like a pro and took out the multiplication game at the Canungra course on Tuesday with her partner, Gail Jarvis. Sheila’s 90 year old sister Irene’s team came in third. Canungra Area Golf Club are very proud of the Mills ladies and their golfing prowess, but particularly Sheila who didn’t take up the game until she was 70. After losing her husband she found herself isolated at home until she joined the club. Not only did she find a sport that she soon mastered, but a regular social activity with a group of friendly, younger, ladies who she inspires when the going gets tough. It is also inspirational for new players to learn by watching these senior ladies play as they are a great example of what golf is all about. It is training in patience, tenacity, honesty and sportsmanship with bragging rights at the 19th hole. A truly addictive and enjoyable pastime.

Beaudesert Showgirl Open

Entries are now open to ladies aged 18 25 years for the Miss Showgirl Beaudesert competition. Organiser Rhiannon Taylor says the Miss Showgirl competition is in no way a beauty contest as it has sometimes been perceived. “It is a way for young ladies to refine their public speaking skills and build self-confidence as well as making connections with people that can assist them both personally and professionally. It is far more than a competition, it is an experience that can benefit every entrant for the rest if their lives. A Miss Showgirl event will be held in conjunction with the Beaudesert Cup at Beaudesert Race Course on 25th June. Tickets for the public are $65 which includes entry to the race course and private marquee, a two course meal as well as the entertainment of AFL legend Richard Champion who will be attending as guest speaker. Tickets can be purchased from the Beaudesert Show office at Beaudesert Showgrounds, Tuesday to Thursday between 9am and 3pm. For more information about entering the Miss Showgirl competition contact Rhiannon by email to riomajik@hotmail.com or by phone (outside business hours) on 0409 727 616.

Canungra Area Golf Club Results

By Stephen Mills Soccer season kicked off with both the under 12s mixed and under 13s girls team playing at home. Great efforts by both teams tasting sweet victory on a very hot day. Congratulations to both the teams and our coaching crew and also the Committee involved in getting things rolling. Our Major Titanium Sponsor, FoodWorks had their birthday celebrations on 19th March with the soccer club sizzling away on the BBQ and with every sausage sandwich given away FoodWorks generously donated $2 to the soccer club. A total of $1540 was raised and a huge thanks to Tony and Ann, Gary, Shelly and her team of volunteers. Also some further great news with the incoming new Club President Stephen Mills the club has also secured several more Gold sponsors, including Aquis and Canungra Hotel, bringing much needed funding to the Club. Several other sponsors are also bringing in financial support to the club. From the funding we will secure a Professional Head Development Coach giving both the kids and the coaches that added experience on the field, along with brand new playing Jerseys for this season, and minor upgrades to the canteen.

FoodWorks donates to Canungra Owls

Other new initiatives at the club are our Tuesday training sessions followed by a supper put on by the Committee allowing mums, dads and siblings to stay and enjoy the club atmosphere with the soccer kids - a gold coin donation covers the cost. Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby

Sportsperson of the Month

Sportsperson of the Month for March 2016 is Canungra Crusaders Futsal team: This is the second season The Canungra Crusaders have competed in the U12 Monday night competition at Assisi College, through Gold Coast Futsal Association. Last season they finished third on the ladder and went that step further this year, finishing second after losing only two of their matches all season. The semi-final game against Ormeau resulted in a one point win after extra time; but they went down fighting to The Dream Team in the Grand Final. The team is coached by Rod Nicholson and Neil Stoddart, managed by Leonie Nicholson and are a great bunch of players, who played with the highest level of sportsmanship you could ever ask for. The team is made up of: Patrick Mathers, Will Nicolson, Sam Stoddart, Jake Stoddart, Jimmy Tomlinson, Aidan Hill, Dylan Dante, Jonah Parry. April’s Sportsperson of the Month is ten year old Jonah Parry. Jonah took up sailing at Paradise Point Sailing Club, three years ago. He started junior sailing in a Terra training boat, two up. He mastered tacking and gybing and moved up to the intermediate classes as well as junior racing in O’pen Bics which are self draining open hulls. This means any water that comes in the boat flows down and out of the open back. In September last year Jonah sailed his second Regatta, the Queensland titles in the O’pen Bic Class. Jonah was second in the first race and first in the three other races. Overall Jonah became first which makes him Queensland Junior Champion in the O’pen Bic Class! On 21st February, Jonah got second place for the overall 2015 Club Championship at Paradise Point Sailing Club. Well done Jonah!

Morgan

Makes

the

Nationals

Canungra swimmer Morgan Lee has been selected for the 2016 School Sport Australia Swimming Championships in six events – four individual events and two relays - after having placed in all five of her events at the Queensland School Sport Swimming Championships in March. Morgan, who is also Junior School Captain at Tamborine Mountain State High School, won a gold medal in the 50m backstroke; silver in 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m freestyle; and bronze in 50m butterfly at the Sleeman Aquatic Centre in her U16 age group. Morgan qualified as an S7 (which is a disability ranking) and it was the first time she had competed in this type of competition after battling for three years to be accepted by Swimming Australia as a multiclass swimmer. Morgan said she was “so stoked” with her results at the Queensland School Sport Swimming Championships. After learning to swim at Canungra, Morgan joined the Canungra Social Swim Club and later took part in the regular squad sessions. She has trained hard this year, swimming three or four mornings and one afternoon each week under the tutelage of Canungra Pool Manager Karen Nixon. Morgan would like to thank her parents for their support, and for taking her to training and swimming events, and would also like to thank Karen Nixon and Rackley’s Swimming for their support.
