Guide to ‘Living in Beechmont’ Released Beechmont District Landcare Association has launched a new publication: Living in Beechmont: A guide for residents living in a diverse ecological environment. The publication was produced by volunteers on a pro bono basis and was funded by a Scenic Rim Regional Council Environmental Grant scheme for 2015. It will be delivered to every household in Beechmont over the coming weeks and will also be provided to new residents, as stock is available. The booklet focuses on the custodianship of the four classical elements: Fire, Earth, Water and Air. In addition there is synopsis of the work done by Beechmont Landcare, an introduction to the history of Lamington National Park and a two page spread on environmental weeds. Pictures and words from many contributors have been collated to create a booklet introducing and celebrating the unique natural wonders of the Beechmont Hinterland.

Living in Beechmont is a great addition to any household in the Beechmont area. Photographs have been carefully selected to provide a publication which is not only informative, but also aesthetically pleasing. Something to keep as a coffee table reference book. The Landcare movement developed nationally in 1989 as a result of farmers and environmentalists uniting to care for our land and water. The Scenic Rim Regional Council Environmental Grants Program provides for projects that encourage community involvement in the achievement of environmental sustainability. Beechmont Landcare would like to thank Scenic Rim Regional Council, Cr Virginia West and Michael Cully for their advice and support. Pictured right: Cr Virginia West receives the first copy of Living in Beechmont from the Management Committee of Beechmont Landcare Secretary, Susan Cully on behalf of the President, Craig Perkins and the Treasurer, Toni Telfer.

You’ll Find Joyce in the White Pages

If the lady on the cover of the White Pages looks familiar, that’s because she is! Long term Canungra resident Joyce Libke says she was ‘dobbed in’ by other QCWA members along with Louise Goodman to enter a competition to find Beaudesert’s Undiscovered Baking Legend. Queensland Country Women’s Association (QCWA) member and baking enthusiast, Joyce, was featured on the front cover of this year’s 2017 Beaudesert Yellow Pages and White Pages directory, along with her winning recipe; her family-famous date and nut loaf. The competition was a result of a partnership between the Yellow Pages, White Pages and the QCWA. A first of its kind venture that will see all Beaudesert District directories used to celebrate the phenomenal achievements of the state’s largest volunteer women’s organisation, the QCWA, their love of food and the areas’ finest baker. Joyce Libke won the hearts (and mouths) of a panel of judges from the Yellow Pages, White Pages and QCWA, after she entered the online competition, but she is characteristically humble about the competition. “Louise Goodman and I were “dobbed in” by the other members of QCWA South Eastern Division last year and we had to give our President a recipe with story,” said Joyce. “We would have been the only two nominated in the Beaudesert area. Louise sent in her grandmother’s maderia cake recipe and I sent in my Mum’s date loaf.:

“Whether anyone tried baking them I

don’t know but they chose mine.” “I spent a morning last October being professionally photographed in my kitchen. I think he ended up with dozens if not hundreds to chose from,” she said.

Not only does Joyce feature on the front cover of this year’s Yellow Pages Beaudesert book, but her Mum’s tantalising date and nut loaf recipe and ingredients also appear on the inside front cover for local residents to enjoy, alongside details of the phenomenal work that the QCWA does in the area. Talking about the campaign, Sensis spokesperson, Erin Williamson said, “We are extremely proud to partner with the

Country Women’s Association for this year’s Yellow Pages covers program.” “It is a fitting partnership as we share a common goal of helping, supporting and connecting the community with the things that matter. We also have a mutual love of food – and cannot wait to see the nation’s undiscovered bakers revealed across our directories over the coming months.” While working tirelessly for over nine decades to provide a voice and improved life conditions to women and children in regional and rural Australia, the Country Women’s Association (CWA) through its network of 1,500 branches, has also built a strong reputation in baking and empowering one another through the love of food, and the 2017 Beaudesert cover will celebrate this aspect of the CWA. State President of QCWA, Joy Coulson said, “Food is a very powerful thing; not only for the obvious reasons, but it has the ability to unite people. As most will know, we’re quite famous for our scones, so to have the opportunity to showcase some of our members and their amazing baking delights on the covers of the Yellow Pages books, along with details of our recent work is an incredibly exciting thing.” The 2017 Beaudesert Yellow Pages and White Pages book featuring Joyce Libke has already been distributed to most households in the Scenic Rim area. For those in need of a Yellow Pages and White Pages directory they can be ordered at www.directoryselect.com.au.

Social media reports of horses and cattle lost in floodwaters saw several owners reunited with the horses, but many unfortunately found deceased. A Community Centre was set up at Tamborine Memorial Hall where volunteers worked tirelessly to give food, clothing and other essential items to people who had their homes inundated by floodwater or who were unable to get home. Canungra Op Shop Manager, Caroline Andrew encouraged people affected by the flooding to let the Op Shop know so they can assist with clothing, kitchen items and furniture. “I had one lady donate a lot of bedding that she specifically wants to go to flood victims,” said Caroline. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said financial assistance was being administered by the Queensland State Government with support from the Federal Government through the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), and is flowing through to local councils to help with the recovery process. “It’s heartening to see all levels of Government working closely together and I will certainly continue to ensure our Councils get the assistance they need,” said Scott. “Local residents who have been impacted can also directly access a range of immediate hardship assistance to help with costs.” Eligible local residents affected by the wild weather and flooding may be able to access assistance and should contact Department of Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services: www.qld.gov. au/community/disasters-emergencies or call the Community Recovery Hotline on 1800 173 349.

National Park Road Update Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence works to improve the road shoulders and surface of Lamington National Park Road between Curtis Road and Double Crossing Road early this month. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said after years of lobbying he was relieved the works would soon be underway to widen and improve the 1.9km stretch of the road approximately 4km from Canungra. “My lobbying has been strongly supported by Division 3 Councillor Virgina West and the local community – I’m pleased that by working together we have secured $787,000 to widen the road shoulder and make things safer,” said Jon. “Weather permitting the roadworks should be finished by late June which is a great outcome for locals, as well as for visitors who use the road to access tourist destinations such as Lamington National Park and O’Reilly’s.” Mr Krause said the work will take place from 6am to 6pm Monday to Friday, with Saturday works as required. The speed limit will be reduced through the workzone with stop/slow traffic control in place. “I remind residents that road worker safety is everyone’s responsibility – please obey the speed limits in place and make sure to leave plenty of room when driving past road workers.”

Back Creek Tree Planting Day By Susan Cully On the morning of Sunday 26 March, over 40 people attended the Back Creek Tree Planting Day, planting 600 trees. This was a joint initiative of Tamborine Mountain Landcare, Caring for Plateaus, Beechmont Landcare, Scenic Rim Regional Council, their members, staff and visitors. Additional support came from the Gold Coast Bushwalkers and convenors of the Syd Duncan Park project in Lower Beechmont. Truly co-operative! Trees were provided through a SRRC Million Trees application. Throughout South East Queensland, community revegetation projects along riparian corridors are common, these are supported by regional catchment authorities. Animals need vegetation corridors to move safely across the landscape. Loss of habitat has forced many animals onto roads. The existing reserves along the Back Creek currently provide bird watchers with at least 160 bird species to enjoy, as well as koalas, gliders and Richmond Birdwing Butterflies. Half a morning was all that was needed for the planting. This was followed by a fabulous morning tea provided by the sponsoring organisations.

Roslyn Lodge Saved

The last minute sale of Tamborine Mountain aged care facility Roslyn Lodge sees it remain open under new owner Beaumont Care. It was announced in February that Roslyn Lodge would close on 31st March 2017 after PresCare had investigated possible sale and expansion options – none of which had come to fruition. Several residents had already been relocated during a stressful time between the announced closure and the news that the facility had been saved from closure. Many of these resident have returned to Roslyn Lodge. Beaumont Care is an Australian family owned and operated accredited provider of aged care services on the Redcliffe Peninsula. They will take over the residential care service on Tamborine Mountain in the coming months. Greg Skelton, PresCare Group CEO, said, “I want to recognise that it has been a difficult few weeks for the residents of Roslyn Lodge and their families, as well as our staff. The announcement that Roslyn Lodge will continue is a positive outcome for everyone.” Linda Beaumont of Beaumont Care, said, “We believe that Roslyn Lodge is our kind of care facility and are very happy to welcome the residents into our family. As an energetic Australianowned, family focused operator, we believe that Beaumont Care can offer the Tamborine Mountain community, aged care services that align to their lifestyle and needs”. “We are pleased to also advise that the current personnel will be most welcome at Beaumont, and we will be working with PresCare to achieve an orderly transition to minimise any impact on those who live and work at Roslyn Lodge”.

Call for Certainty on Police Vehicles Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause has called in Queensland Parliament for the Government to deliver extra police vehicles for Tamborine Mountain and Canungra. On Thursday 23rd March, Mr Krause addressed Parliament and called on the Government to act. “Both stations have eight officers, but there are only two police cars permanently based there. This is simply not good enough.” “The Logan police district has had a third police vehicle on loan to these two stations that they have to share. I call on the police minister and the Police Service to make that allocation permanent.” “Ideally, we need another vehicle as well. Having three vehicles for 16 officers in the area that the Canungra and Tamborine Mountain police stations cover is simply not good enough today. We need an improvement in resources.” Mr Krause invited Shadow Minister for Police, Tim Mander, to the region earlier in March to hear first-hand about the issues facing police across the region, including at Canungra and Tamborine Mountain. “I wanted Tim to see for himself, as the alternative Minister for Police, what is actually going on in our region,” Mr Krause said. “I’ve been lobbying the State Government for a long time to address the police vehicle shortage which has been plaguing officers at Tamborine Mountain and Canungra police stations.” “Previously we had one vehicle for each station which was ridiculous - I’d received reports of officers having to attend incidents in their private vehicles or on pushbikes because there weren’t police vehicles available. This wouldn’t happen in Brisbane” “Our region is growing and covers a large geographic area - I will keep pressure on the government to deliver the police resources our region needs.”

One Year On

It has been one year since the old School Building arrived in Kidston Street Canungra. “It has taken a little longer than expected to obtain the approvals we needed, but now they are all in place, things will begin to quickly take shape”, said Samantha and John-Paul Lo Giudice, who are both registered osteopaths. While work is happening on site Samantha will be practising alongside Kym, Steve and Jane at Canungra Beauty and Acupuncture every Thursday. A bit about osteopathy: Osteopathy is a handson approach to healthcare. Osteopaths recognise the important link between the structures of your body and the way it functions. They focus on how Sammy Lo Giudice the skeleton, joints, muscles, nerves, circulation, connective tissue and internal organs function as a holistic unit. Using skilled evaluation, diagnosis and a range of hands-on techniques, osteopaths can identify dysfunction in your body. Osteopathic treatment uses techniques such as stretching and massage for treatment of the soft tissues (muscles, tendons and ligaments) along with mobilisation of specific joints and soft tissues. In Australia, osteopaths are government registered practitioners who complete a minimum of five years university training in anatomy, physiology, pathology, general medical diagnosis and osteopathic techniques. Osteopaths are primary healthcare practitioners and are trained to recognise conditions that require medical referral. They are also trained to perform standard medical examinations of the musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous systems. Osteopathy is covered by most private health funds and by Medicare’s Chronic Disease Management (CDM) Plans. Some of the conditions osteopaths may be able to help with include: Headaches and migraines; Neck and back pain; Jaw pain; Respiratory conditions; Hip and knee problems; Ankle and foot problems; Hand and wrist problems; Elbow and shoulder problems; Digestive conditions; Sports injuries; Injury rehabilitation; Occupational problems eg. repetitive strain injury; Pain from trauma; Stress and anxiety; Women’s health; Pre-natal; Post-natal; Pregnancy. A bit about Samantha: Samantha became an osteopath due to her fascination and respect for the human body. After spending nine years at universities in Australia and South America she graduated from Southern Cross University with a Bachelor of Clinical Science & Masters of Osteopathy. She has worked in health clinics on the Gold Coast and Northern Rivers. Samantha is a committed and compassionate osteopath who tailors her treatments to suit the individual needs of each patient. Anzac Day 2017 By Colin Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub-Branch

BY NATURE

Eve By Nature Day Spa

Special for April and May: • 90 minute pamper package includes - foot scrub, half hour massage, express facial, eyelash tint, foot massage. Glass of Champagne included all for only $85.

What about a Gift Voucher for Mother’s Day for your Loved Ones?

More than a century has passed since young Australians from all walks of life established the Anzac legend, yet the observance of Anzac Day in the wider community has never been stronger. Australian around the nation will gather in cities and towns on Tuesday 25th April to remember and pay their respects to those original Anzacs and to those who have continued to maintain the Anzac spirit with its enduring ideals of courage and mateship. Last year, Canungra’s Dawn and Main Services were once again well attended by the citizens of Canungra and surrounding area, and wonderful people who were simply travelling through. Troops in uniform from Kokoda Barracks and the Pipes and Drums added a military precision and enhanced the Anzac Day March. This year, stepping off at 9.30am from Canungra State School will be members of the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch, veterans, serving members of the Australian Defence Force, community groups and State School students. The march will move along Christie Street with a salute taken at the Canungra Post Office, and then to the memorial in D J Smith Park for the main service and wreath laying. For many, the tradition of Anzac Day observance will start in the silence of early dawn at 5.30am in Canungra’s D J Smith Park. A stirring Dawn service will remember the brave actions of those who landed on the distant Gallipoli shore and those who suffered or made the ultimate sacrifice on the Western Front.

Tapping into Commonwealth Games Potential

Tamborine Mountain Chamber of Commerce has launched an exciting project to help the local community tap into the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games celebrations. The project, to be known as the Commonwealth Community, has matched 70 businesses with a competing Commonwealth country - learning about them and their athletes and becoming ambassadors for them. Each selected business will be asked to identify with its chosen country and support its athletes and their achievements. Five Canungra Businesses have joined the Commonwealth Community: Canungra Hotel - Saint Lucia; The Outpost Cafe - Andrew - Ghana; The Shoe Vault - Bangladesh; Ginja Ninja - Isle of Man; GreenLee Farm and Cottages - Uganda. Other Commonwealth Community businesses are located on Tamborine Mountain and Beaudesert. The Gold Coast Commonwealth Games organisation has endorsed the project, and sees it as a wonderful opportunity to involve the Gold Coast Hinterland in the spirit of the Games.

Canungra Hotel is one of five Canungra businesses that has joined the ‘Commonwealth Community’

The Commonwealth Community will be launched this month, one year before the Games begin and will run for the whole year before the Games start. Each business will have a country flag to display, indicating its involvement. Committee spokesperson, Gordon Chalmers, said tear off maps will also be printed and given to visitors to encourage them to visit as many ‘countries’ (businesses) as possible. “A ‘passport’ is currently under development and will be available for sale by

participating businesses and present an opportunity to them to offer a discount of voucher to encourage shoppers. Each business will also be issued with a country/date stamp for stamping visitors’ ‘passports,” said Gordon. The Commonwealth Games will run from 4th to 18th April 2018. It will be the single biggest event in a decade in Australia and the biggest sporting event ever held on the Gold Coast. It is expected to attract an additional 220,000 extra visitors to Australia, in particular the Gold Coast.

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Working Together A few days before the floods, I wrote From My Window about community groups working together. Since then we have seen a huge number of people banding together to support others. From Canungra Motel and The Odd Gecko and other community members helping with accommodation; Wayno from Canungra Pizza who took pizzas out to flood affected families at Tamborine Village; people who have donated and helped with clean ups; and of course the emergency services personnel who risked their own lives to save or assist others - these are the people who make a huge difference to those affected. Part of living in this area - whether it is Canungra, Beechmont, Tamborine Mountain or elsewhere - is living with the forces of nature that result in power outages and being cut off from other areas, sometimes for days. I wonder whether we need a ‘Disaster Management Plan’. I’ve seen flooding like this at least four times since I’ve lived in Canungra and while people always help each other, maybe it’s time we had something else in place. A plan so people being evacuated know where they can go, and others know where to take food or blankets if needed. There were constant updates on social media (which was great) but when your power is off and your internet is down, knowing where to go might make all the difference. What do you think?

International Women’s Day

Canungra Chamber of Commerce held their inaugural International Women’s Day Breakfast at Canungra Hotel on Wednesday 8th March. Over thirty women gathered to hear local publicist, Nikki Dudley, speak about her career. They were joined by several men, including Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause and Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christiansen, who accompanied his wife, Denise. Nikki has worked in several areas, notably real estate, marketing and interior design and has achieved a lot in her 30-- something years. Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Desley Bird said it was significant that many of the businesses in Canungra’s main street are owned and run by women. Nikki’s speech concluded with some valuable marketing tips to the attendees: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9.

Bringing City Sophistication to the Country

Cafe Metz has brought city sophistication to Canungra with Chef Jarrod Branson creating a fresh menu which combines the old favourites with a selection of new innovative dishes. Owner John Strickland and Manager Suzi West said customers are able to order their favourite dishes, such as the Club Sandwich and Eggs Benedict, but the new menu provides more choice and a greater selection of home made dishes. “One of our customers said the menu takes the cafe to a new level, by bringing city foodie sophistication to the country,” said Suzi. John purchased Cafe Metz in April 2016 and added Chef Jarrod to their staff shortly after. The revised menu has all quiches, pies, sausage rolls, frittata and filo pastries made fresh on the premises. It has already received five star reviews from customers through Facebook and Trip Advisor. “We have taken the best of what we had and added to it,” said Suzi. The all day breakfast menu includes The Euro (Grilled Sourdough with Bacon, Poaches Egg, Baby Spinach, Grilled Haloumi

Still serving their popular Merlo coffee blend, Cafe Metz has refreshed their menu

ad Salsa Verde), Smashed Avo (with Cherry Tomato, Marinated Feta and House made Dukkah), and The Canadian (House made pancakes with Maple Glazed Bacon, Caramelised Banana and Vanilla Cream). Lunch is a great selection of gourmet burgers, including 250 gram Rump with Dianne Sauce, flathead fillets, steak sandwich, house made lentil and chickpea veg burger and the option to create your own toastie, sandwich or wrap. Jarrod has also

added the popular Salt and Pepper Calamari and Chicken Parmi to the menu. For the first time Cafe Metz is also offering a Kids Menu with a selection of $9 meals for children. Suzi said she is also looking at opening Friday and Saturday nights for dinner and drinks - watch this space for updates! Whether you are looking for a morning coffee, a hearty breakfast or lunch or a snack on the run - drop into Cafe Metz!

Display of Colour at Orchid and Foliage Show

Canungra School of Arts Hall was a blaze of colour during the recent Autumn Show for Orchid and Foliage Plants. Beaudesert Orchid and Foliage Society Secretary, Peter Rice, said they saw many of the usual faces return. A total of 756 visitors attended the Show over the weekend, 501 on Saturday and 255 on the Sunday, a little short of the 782 that attended in Autumn 2016 but still the second highest attendance at any of the Society’s Shows. “Our shows have a better, more relaxed atmosphere comparred to many of the larger shows and many of our visitors prefer what we have to offer - a good display of show quality orchids and foliage plants; a huge assortment of sales plants; a knowledgeable and entertaining guest speaker and the chance to sit down and talk with quality growers who will try to sort out any problems visitors might have with your plants,” said Peter. The Grand Champion Orchid was a Vanda grown by Michael Billiau and the Reserve Champion Orchid was a Dendrobium grown by Ruby Brown. The Grand Champion Foliage Plant was a magnificent hanging,

Dot Peel, Pamela Walden and Vicki Rayner enjoying the Orchid and Foliage Show

small-leafed Hoya entered by Lee Thorneycroft and Reserve Champion Foliage Plant was a magnificent multi-stemmed Aglaonema exhibited by Ron and Esme Horsey, long term members of the Society. Esme was presented with a Life Membership badge at the commencement of presentations. The Society offered $3,000 in prizemoney, made possible as a result of their sponsors

who donate regularly . These include Scenic Rim Regional Council, Scott Buchholz. Jon Krause, Terra Firma Fertilisers, Seasol, Brunnings and Rocky Point Mulching. The Society will hold their Spring Show at the Canungra School of Arts Hall on 9th and 10th September 2017 where Peter says Native Australian Orchids will hold centre of stage.

Congratulations - we have a Winner! Congratulations to Jenny Pack who listed her business for sale during our December/January promotion and has won the major prize of a $1000 Westfield Gift Card!

From November to January anyone listing their property or business for sale; rental property to manage; and referrals with Aussie Lifestyle Properties, went into the draw to win a $1000 Westfield card which was drawn in early March. Monique from Aussie Lifestyle Properties said she ran the competition because they are in need of properties to rent to fill the demand and have a shortage of properties to sell due to their sales success last year. “We had a great response to our competition!” said Monique, “We are still in need of properties to sell and have qualified buyers in our database. Some properties we sold didn’t even make it to the internet! Properties that are priced correctly are not lasting long on the market.” If you are looking to sell your property or have your investment property professionally managed call Aussie Lifestyle Properties today and they will be more than happy to help and offer a free no obligation appraisal.

Canungra Students Cooler than Ever! By Canungra State School class 5M

This term, the students of Canungra State School were fortunate to receive awesome air conditioning throughout the whole school. On behalf of the entire student body, 5M would like to thank all of the contributing local businesses for generously donating their hard earned money to make our dream of having air conditioning in all classrooms come true. We have found that having consistently cooler classrooms has created a better learning environment for both the teachers and students. It has kept us cool and alert during this humid weather and has helped us to concentrate more. No longer do we have to put up with the whizzing from the noisy fans which used to blow our papers everywhere. The glorious air conditioning has improved communication so we can hear our teachers better, even though it’s now easier for them to catch us out if we’re having a sneaky chat! We would like to acknowledge the following business for their kind donations and for playing a huge role in making the teachers and students of Canungra State School happier and ready to learn!

The picturesque Queenslander building first on the left in Kidston Street is wellknown to local Canungra residents and visitors. Popular in past years as the Flutterby’s gift shop and Possums Café, the building will now house Canungra Books and Art. Jan McGregor, who started the bookshop two years ago in the Shoe Vault Marketta weekend market, is delighted to be moving to the new premises. “The market has been wonderful fun and a great learning curve. The new shop will now provide a new opportunity to showcase the extensive range of vintage to contemporary books, studio pottery, LP’s and art,” Jan said. “We will be open five days a week from Wednesday to Sunday.” A local group of talented artisans will also be occupying part of the building. The Artisan Group are very happy to be joining Jan for this new venture. It will bring a real living economy to the region with the income going entirely to the artists. Their handcrafted Textiles & Homewares, Pottery and Jewellery will be available for purchase from the 8th April. Come in for a browse and say hello to the makers: Australian Made, Individual, Unique Gifts and Wearable Art. Keep an eye out for their Mini Makers Sessions coming soon. With the In the Raw healthfood shop next door in the old Newsagent building, and the cottage industry hub in Appel Street, this part of town is developing as a new and exciting part of Canungra township. Canungra Books and Art opened on Saturday 1st April and will be open Wednesday to Sunday. The Artisans Group will be open from Saturday 8th April.

AWL - Going Grey Program The AWL ‘Going Grey’ program is about transitioning racing greyhounds to domestic pets. If you’ve been looking for a relaxed, placid companion to snuggle up with, then a greyhound may just be for you! These gorgeous dogs have had a tough start to life as racing dogs, but they don’t let that stop them! They really shine as companion animals, and most owners will agree that they are one of the easiest dogs to own! Contrary to popular belief, Greyhounds do not need much exercise. They are sprinters, and a daily walk of about 20-30 minutes will often do the trick; then they are ready to sleep for the rest of the day. They are inside companions and most Greyhounds are easily toilet trained within a few days. They are low shedding, friendly, well mannered, gentle, and do not tend to bark. Many greyhounds also get on with small breed dogs, cats (and even rats!) when introduced correctly. Although greyhounds have often never seen a couch in their life, they know exactly what to do when one appears and will happily curl up beside you (or sprawl out all over you) to watch Friday night footy. Adopting an ex-racing rescue greyhound is one of the most rewarding things you may ever do! If you’ve thought about adopting one of these amazing greys, then come talk to our staff today! Native Water Rat - note the white tail

Native Water Rat (Hydromys chrysogaster) By Susan Cully

Monday Mornings from 9.30am - 11.00am Cost: Only $13.00 per class

Phone Shirley on 5543 4047

Is it a Rat (Native) or a ‘Plat’ (Platypus)?

There are only two native animals that live in fresh water, the native Water Rat and the Platypus. The Native Water Rat is often mistaken for a Platypus while swimming on the surface of a watercourse or dam. These two animals have even been known to re-use the same burrows. These animals are shy but relatively plentiful, apparently coping well in the urban fringe as long as food and habitat are not cleared. Adapted to their watery world they are streamlined in body shape with webbed hind paws and a rudder-like furry tail. Their body design resembles that of the otter family. They have a body length of 300mm; tail length of 270mm, they have small ears and an attractive ‘square’ head, the fur on their back is brown-black, the belly is golden. Most distinctively, they usually have a white-tipped tail. They are active day and night. They can cope with polluted and brackish steams and are found Australia-wide. These animals do not deserve the stigma that attaches to feral, foreign, pest rats, they are an appealing native animal. Formerly hunted for its fur, it is now a protected species in Australia. It forages by swimming underwater and feeds on a wide range of prey including large insects, plants, crustaceans, mussels, fish, and small mammals and water birds. In irrigation districts this animal is useful in controlling yabby populations, thus reducing damage to dam and water channel walls.

What can you do to help this species?

Protect water rat habitat by leaving vegetation around watercourses to prevent bank erosion and maintain healthy waterway ecosystems. Please send any water rat observations to the Australian Platypus Conservancy.

Your Stars - April 2017

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)

The Sun moves into Aries. Mercury reverses back into Aries. Venus stays relatively motionless in Aries. Your vitality is likely to increase. Your capacity to follow your impulses is likely to be superior to your capacity to explain what you are doing. Venus helps you find beauty anyway.

The Sun is in Aries. There is high-octane fuel in your tank. This is not a time for standing back and reflecting on past glories. It’s a month in which you will find yourself following your impulses, and then wondering where you found the courage. This will help release the past.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Our recent Car Boot Sale was a huge success in so many ways. The weather was perfect, and the continuous stream of visitors to St Luke’s grounds were happy to spend some money, buy a bargain or just enjoy the

atmosphere. We were pleased to see the raffle prizes won by three local people and we are very grateful to Irene Sim and Kay Upton for cheerfully selling the tickets both on the day and prior to CBS around town. Thank you everyone for your wonderful support, the Guild members appreciate the acknowledgement of what St Luke’s means to the wonderful people of Canungra. Decisions, decisions? Do you ever stop to think about how many decisions you make each day? From the minute you get up until you retire at night, you are making decisions, some are very simple, while some require much thought and consideration. Generally, we hope we have made the right decision. We at St Luke’s are deciding about painting St Luke’s and replacing the front fence but there are so many factors to consider. We need to make wise and long term decisions which will help to maintain St Luke’s value to Canungra for many years to come. Do you have any major decisions to make in your life? Perhaps you are considering whether to attend a church service during Easter, or maybe asking yourself, why we celebrate Easter when it is based around the death of Jesus on the cross. Sometimes we would like to do something new or different but find there are too many barriers or it is all too daunting to make a decision. I recently read these words, which may help “We can live without many things, but we cannot live without hope. Hope enriches and empowers us, connecting us with God. Hope is the essence of our faith”. (Words by Debora M Coty) May you feel blessed this Easter.

The Canungra Times - April 2017

We trust everyone is recovering from all our flood dramas ... Moriarty Park fared quite well with only the submersible pump failing and the usual store room washouts; George raced down the coast on Saturday to get a new pump and that was quickly fitted and working. We are in search of nominations for Sportspersons of the Month...it is April already and we only have one nomination so far this year. Nominations to Bren or through Canungra Times please. We would love to see some new faces at our meetings which at this stage are still on the third Tuesday of every month at Moriarty Park at 7pm. Don’t think if you come along you will be given a task (necessarily!!) but more interest in what we are planning and more local input/ideas would be great. There are a number of new residents in town and I hope the community spirit will remain and indeed grow on the strength of this and not wain by dilution. This is a great place to live and we make a fabulous community team! Moriarty Park held their first Trivia Night on St Patrick’s Day and a fun night was had by all. We raised $150 on the night with special thanks to Foodworks for providing the prizes, Stu Comley for the questions and answers, donations of raffle prizes from Stu and Jean, David Baker and Tracey Beggs from Glittering Glass n Gems ... Tracey has kindly offered to provide a raffle prize for our next trivia night too. Which brings me to our next Trivia Night! This will be held on Saturday 22nd April at Moriarty Park at 6.15pm for 6.30pm kick off. Prizes once again provided by Tony and Anne from Foodworks, and questions by Stu. Tables from 1-6 people; $10 a table; byo nibbles, drinks etc, although there will be a selection of beverages available for purchase and more than likely a scone or six! Get a table together and come along for a laugh and some learning!! I love trivia as it matters not if you know the answer when you get there as you will know it when you leave!! There will of course be a raffle so bring your shrapnel! This will be for a good cause announced on the night. I can recommend personally the Pilates classes run by Alanna on Monday and Tuesday nights at Moriarty Park, with hopefully another night after Easter too. I can already feel the benefits particularly with my dodgy back. Once again I have been asked about netball in the tennis courts; each time I have previously brought this up, a small number of people have come forward to say they were interested ... we just need to get ‘em all to come forward at the same time and we are up and running!! So expressions of interest on any level please let Bren know (bren.dalby@bigpond.com). Don’t forget the Triv night !!!! See you there! Page 35

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB By Kim Sami

Iconic Swinging Bridge Washed Away

The wrath of ex Cyclone Debbie has been felt by the golfing community of the Canungra Area Golf Club! The Golf Course has been literally cut in half with the powerful Coomera River breaking its banks and smashing the iconic swinging bridge in half. The power of the river then took its toll on the Tinny Crossing causeway washing the concrete completely away leaving access to holes 2 - 7 impossible. The Alloah Drive crossing was also flooded, making the entire golf course inaccessible for several days. The never give in attitude of the Canungra Golf Club Members and Staff have managed to gain access over Alloah Rd Causeway with the assistance of Ben from Earth fleet and his trusty excavator. We were pleased to find the clubhouse and surrounds intact and are now preparing the front three holes for play. Our first official altered game will be on Thursday 6th April. Please drive carefully when accessing across Alloah Road as the road is very rough. Also please be aware that our phone

line has been washed away so we don’t have EFTPOS at this time. The Club’s Committee are working closely with Defence Support to rectify the access to the back of the course and will have the Golf Course back in full swing as soon as we can. In the meantime we would like to thank the Canungra Area Golf Club Members and community for your patience, support and offers of assistance throughout this weather event.

Sport

By Rachel Mathers How crazy has the start of the 2017 football season been? We had cancellation after cancellation due to weather and some draws had a lot of restructuring due to reasons outside the Club’s control. Thank you to all the Owl families for your patience. Due to the rescheduling there will be some catch up games required and while the Club tries to make it as hassle free as possible, there will be times where you are wondering why you committed to such a sport. The answer: because you love it . Love the thrill, excitement and commitment that the players display every week for their team and Club. The positive energy throughout the Club is contagious and we are looking forward to a wonderful season ahead. The small-sided and assistant referee course conducted by local referee personality Glenn Russell was well attended. Those skills are currently being utilised by the individuals to benefit our club. Thanks Glenn and thanks to the individuals who are giving

up their time to become junior officials for the fastest growing national sport. We’d like to welcome Steph Stanyer to the Canungra Owls. Steph is a WPL referee who now lives locally and has offered her services to mentor our upcoming referees – thank you so much Steph, we hope you enjoy working with our great Club! At the beginning of last month the Club held a Grassroots coaching clinic, facilitated by the Football Queensland Women’s and Inclusive Football Development Officer, Sarah Willington, and the Football Gold Coast Development Coordinator, Pat Hedges. Both individuals were impressed with the turn out. They thanked all participants and unofficially opened the Women in Football week for Queensland a day earlier than scheduled. Thank you Sarah and Pat! Term Two sees the return of the Squirts program, a football development program aimed at three to five year old children. The program is being supported by the Canungra & District Community Bank and has limited spots. Local gardener, father, bank board

member (the list goes on) and all-round community orientated decent bloke, David Baker, has offered his services and skills to facilitate the program and is looking forward to getting back on the paddock with a ball at his feet. Look out for our draw to see when we are playing at home (Wednesday and Friday nights, weekends, plus some alternative evening catch up games). Remember to like us on Facebook and check out our website. We are at Canungra Hotel on Sundays, once a fortnight, conducting Meat Tray raffles and occasionally for a wet weather senior coaching session. Be prepared for an influx of weekend (and some weeknight) visitors when there are games scheduled. Keep an ear to the ground for goal keeper training in the school holidays and first aid training to be held at Moriarty Park in May. The community is always welcome to come down and support the Club. We would love to hear you all hooting for the players as they give their best for their team and your Club out on the field.

Peter Teveluwe has been awarded Life Membership of Moriarty Park

Life Membership Awarded By Bren Dalby Local icon Peter Teveluwe, aka Pete Tiv, is an amazing and talented bloke; generous with his time and expertise for many years whilst also holding positions of President of Canungra Owls Soccer Club and then President of Moriarty Park. All the Teveluwe offspring - Danielle, Kelly, Chelsea and Adrian - are terrific athletes too and great young talented people. They all played soccer in Canungra from very early ages and Pete was always on hand to help with anything at all, from raking grass to concreting, brick work, cooking chips, coaching soccer etc. Nothing this bloke can’t turn his hand to! Pete has recently moved to the coast but still pops in to see what’s happening and ends up doing something to help somebody while he’s here. Difficult man to pin down but Bren caught up with him on a rainy day to finally present him with the plaque that has been over a year in the pipeline. Pete was delighted and said he was honoured to receive the award - “thanks to everyone at Moriarty Park”. A prestigious award indeed, being held by only one other at the present time, that being Joane Hopley who has been known for years as ‘Mrs Moriarty Park’. Joane was the driving force for many major projects such as the field lights and the cricket pitch ,and her huge efforts and success with grants etc will be appreciated by Moriarty Park and the wider community for many years to come.

Shelby Turner on her Procycle Dyno Kawasaki Ninja 300

Local Hairdresser Tops National Motorcycle Race InStyle Hair Canungra owner Shelby Turner, cut her way through a field of over 30 riders to win the outright Woman’s Supersport 300 class. Shelby, on board her Procycle Dyno Kawasaki Ninja 300, pitted her skills against

Australia’s best men and women at Wakefield Park in NSW, for round two of the Australian Superbike Championship. The massive field of riders included five women. Battling horrendous weather Shelby proved she could mix it with the best.

The Canungra Times - April 2017

Her consistent results in each race placed her ninth outright and first in the women’s class. Shelby is now looking forward to the next round at Winton, Victoria on 22nd April. You can follows Shelby’s progress on her Facebook page @Shelbs#52.
