Nikki Dudley accepts the Top Women in Building Award
Top Women in Building Award
Canungra local Nikki Dudley of prestige buildings and interiors company Hobbs took out the top award for Women in Building at the Master Builders Queensland Housing and Construction Awards at Jupiters Gold Coast. The media publicist turned Interior Designer was commended on her contribution to the construction industry, including DIY renovation blog nooks and cranny and the Hobbs team’s recent million dollar commercial build - Windaroo Veterinary Surgery Animal Hospital - located at Bahrs Scrub, near Beenleigh. Hobbs Director of Interior Design Nikki Dudley says, “I am extremely honoured to be recognised within the industry as a leader and role model for other women in construction and design, and look forward to diversing my skills, as there’s just so much more to learn.” “Credit for this award also goes to my partner Luke for his continued support of my wild ideas and daily focus on building our business to now include interior design services such as new build selections, soft furnishings, for sale advice and in-home styling,” Nikki said. For more information about the Scenic Rim’s steel frame custom build specialists, visit www. hobbsbuilding.com.au.
Capacity Crowd at Canungra Rodeo
The weather, quality entries and a capacity crowd combined to create one of the biggest rodeos Canungra has seen on Saturday 9th July. Canungra AH&I Society’s Rodeo Coordinator and National Rodeo Association (NRA) representative, Terry Sharland said the 2016 Canungra rodeo was a huge success “With over 300 competitors, Canungra is one of the biggest rodeos for the Association,” he said. Terry said the NRA competitors love Canungra grounds, and since the Rodeo he has had many cowboys & cowgirls rave on about the event. Terry has been involved with Canungra rodeo for over 20 years, both as a judge and now arena co-ordinator. “It was one of the biggest crowds I have seen, and by all accounts, well behaved,” he said. Organisers said increased radio advertising and social media presence contributed to the 6,000 strong crowd, but the weather was the real defining factor. A mild evening and no rain made for much more comfortable environment than the usual freezing temperatures. “I’d like to pass on a massive thank you to all the committee, workers and volunteers who helped make this the success that it was,” said Terry, “See you all there next year, bring on 2017 Rodeo.” Results, more photos pages 8 and 9

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards recently hosted Scenic Rim’s Eat Local Week Longest Lunch. Almost 100 guests enjoyed a sit down meal showcasing the best of local produce. Share platters consisted of succulent meats from Boonah’s Fassifern Quality Butchers of slow cooked roasted pork belly, greek lamb and chicken breast. Dishes were topped with the likes of Canungra Valley pumpkins, local Dale Mahoney potatoes and fresh herbs straight from the Vineyard’s own garden. Of course, all washed down with O’Reilly’s very own award-winning wines. Staff member Alison Dougherty pictured above. Photo: Susie Cunningham. Complimen ta Orthodon ry Consultatiotic n

MorePoliceVehiclesNeeded
Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause is fighting for additional police vehicles for North Tamborine and Canungra police stations. Mr Krause said North Tamborine Police Station has a single Ford Territory to share between eight officers, while Canungra Police Station has eight police to a lone Toyota Landcruiser. “I’ve received reports of officers having to attend incidents in their private vehicles or even on pushbikes because there weren’t police vehicles available,” Mr Krause said. “I explained these concerns to Police Minister Bill Byrne in a pre-budget letter.” Mr Krause said that $32 million had been allocated in the budget for the purchase of 700 new police vehicles. He called on the Police Minister to ensure North Tamborine and Canungra were allocated an additional vehicle each. “It is simply not good enough to have officers using their own private vehicle or not attending incidents because of a lack of police cars – this situation must be rectified as soon as possible. “Our region is growing and covers a large geographic area - I will keep pressure on the government to deliver the police resources our region needs.”

Wayne is Keeping Blue Care on the Road
Fundraising for the past 10 years has kept Wayne Reiser busy and active in the community, and is helping Bluecare nurses to do the same. The lastest cheque presented to Bluecare for $2,500 bring Wayne’s fundraising total to approximately $50,000. The money is used to pay for running costs for Blue Care’s community nursing vehicles which travel across South East Queensland, and in the Scenic Rim in particular. Wayne said he is grateful to the Canungra Hotel and the patrons who support his fundraising efforts. In addition to the Blue Care donation, Wayne’s 2015/16 fundraising also supported Turning Canungra Pink and Care Flight.

Green Army Marches On
The latest crop of graduates in the Green Army program received their certificates of appreciation from Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen and Cr Virginia West at a morning tea and presentation on Thursday 21st July. Earlier this year the Federal Government announced $170,000 in funding through the 20 Million Trees Programme which has seen Green Army participants working on three projects throughout the Scenic Rim region. At Canungra, Moriarty Park has benefited from the planting of native trees and shrubs and works to prevent erosion of the creek bank. The Green Army program helps to create employment opportunities for young people as they gain experience working on environmental projects which benefit local communities. Page 6

Lest We Forget
A century after one of the bloodiest battles of World War One, the Canungra’s connection to Pozieres is not forgotten. Of the 135 individuals named on Canungra’s war memorial, 13 fought at Pozieres on the Western Front during late July and early August in 1916 – one, Joshua Jenyns, making the supreme sacrifice. Joshua (Ern to his family and friends) was killed in action the same night his brother, Edmund Jenyns, was wounded in action at Pozieres. The brothers were among the more than 23,000 Australians either killed or wounded in action at Pozieres in just a few weeks – more than during the entire eight-month Gallipoli campaign. Many of those who fought or died at Pozieres were Gallipoli veterans and the loss of life and bloodshed prompted historian Charles Bean to write that Pozieres “is more densely sown with Australian sacrifice than any other place on earth.” Also named on Canungra’s memorial is Stanley Howard, whose spine was severed by a bullet at Pozieres. He eventually died of his wounds 20 years after World War One ended. Also wounded in action at Pozieres were Herbert Phillips, William Birley, Stewart Franklin and Hector Cowling. Joseph Blunt and Robert Alford fought at Pozieres but were both killed in action in subsequent battles on the Western Front. Neil McKillop, George Rankin and Patrick Gorman also saw action at Pozieres. For his bravery in his first major action of the war, Frank Kasper was awarded the Military Medal for carrying despatches during heavy machine gun and rifle fire during the attack on Pozieres Ridge on July 28 and 29. The full stories of those named on Canungra’s memorial to those who served in World War One can be found on the website, canungraansweredthecall.org.au a Centenary of ANZAC project commissioned by the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch with Federal Government funding.

Where were the Snags?
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
That’s what it’s all about! This month a few things clicked into place, because of my involvement in Canungra Show. This year the Show is different. We are using more area (Moriarty Park and Canungra Showground), involving more community groups and working with a larger number of people. It could be challenging, but it isn’t. It’s uplifting. There a lot of good coming out of it. Businesses have been very supportive with sponsorship which means we can provide quality entertainment. Canungra Bowls Club, Canungra Owls Soccer Club and Gospel Road church group are helping out with food and music on the day. There has been compromise by all groups to enable to the Show Society to use Moriarty Park, provide food and entertainment and make it all work. We’ve had great support from Canungra State School reps Paige and Brooke and their family; and from Tash at the Bendigo Agency and my daughter Sophie who have been busily sorting show ribbons. Valley View Equine Group will also run some equestrian classes on the day. There are also a number of car and machinery groups and emergency services bringing equipment to display. It’s looking good. So as the month progresses towards 20th August, I’m hoping the pieces will continue to fall into place. See you at the Show!
This may seem like a trivial issue to many but to me it is a big opportunity gone missing. At both of our recent elections I was very disappointed to see that the Canungra State School P&C or any other community group didn’t have a sausage sizzle and/or a cake stall at the polling booth. These little stalls could raise much needed funds for our local state school and other local community groups. These stands require very minimal outlays as I’m sure that Foodworks would gladly supply goods to the school for a sausage sizzle. Our next election isn’t for a couple of years hopefully either the school or a community group will step up run a stall and earn much needed funds. Christopher Duncan

New Water Treatment Plant for Canungra
Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause says construction of a new $4 million water treatment plant at Canungra will begin this month with planners on site and construction due to start in early September. Mr Krause said the new plant will more than triple the capacity of the existing facility from 0.4 to 1.5 megalitres per day. “Since being elected in 2012, I have fought for Canungra’s water infrastructure to be upgraded and improved,” Mr Krause said. “I’m pleased Seqwater will soon be commencing construction and by this time next year the project should be complete. Demand for treated water from the Canungra plant is projected to reach about 1 megalitre per day by 2045 and construction of this new facility will ensure this need is met.” Mr Krause said the main components of the existing plant, which was constructed in 1970 and upgraded in 1982, were nearing the end of their life. The existing plant will continue supplying drinking water throughout construction and will be demolished once the new plant is operational.

Flying Fox Dispersal
Canungra Police Watch
Council’s environment team conducted a dispersal of the flying-fox roost at Lions Park, Canungra during July. The dispersal program was undertaken in two four-day cycles, commencing on Tuesday 19th July and concluding on Friday 29th July. These operations involved the use of noise, smoke and light as deterrent methods. The original number of flying-foxes at the Lions Park site was estimated at between 700 and 1000. However, Council’s dispersal activity has been effective to date with no flying foxes returning the roost site at present. The majority of these flying-foxes appear to have relocated to the established Witheren colony area with the remainder scattering elsewhere. Additionally, there have been no reports of dispersed flying-foxes roosting in backyards or other neighbouring areas. The program has now moved to a monitoring phase to measure the effectiveness of the dispersal Ad specs:program in A: 10cm h x 7.3cm w for the Canungr affecting changes to roosting patterns. B & C: 13cm h x 9.2cm w for the Tam Tamborinecommunity Mountain News. Council thanks the Canungra D: 18.8cm h x 12.9cm w for the Alber for their patience and consideration during the dispersal activity. For further information regarding dispersal efforts, residents are encouraged to contact Council’s Environmental Policy and Services section on 5540 5111.
With Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Police Station It has been a busy couple of months in Canungra with the re-emergence of grubs coming in to do break in’s, wanted felons being apprehended during routine traffic stops, missing bushwalkers, and the usual traffic crashes and complaints that make up our days. That said, the weather’s been great and the turn-out and behaviour of the Rodeo crowd was appreciated by the crews who worked that night. A credit to the organisers and all who attended. With the Show fast approaching we’re hoping for more of the same. On the recent break and enters, two offenders were apprehended in relation to the incident in Tamborine, while we are looking at a different group for the offences in Boyland earlier last month. While the offences don’t appear to be linked the targets and methods are similar. It’s great to get a result and catch the culprits, but we prefer that the offences are prevented in the first place. A few simple steps to make your property less attractive to would-be thieves include closing and locking gates, if you have a security door – lock it, let your neighbours know if you’re going to be away and look out for strangers and vehicles in your neighbourhood. If you see anything suspicious, have a stranger attend your house claiming to be looking for another address or random person, note as much information about person and vehicle as you can and contact us as soon as possible. Road Safety Week is 22nd to 28th August. There is a daily theme for enforcement and education strategies based around Distractions and Inattention, Speed and Risky Behaviour, Fatigue, Share the Road and Impaired Driving. On Friday 26th August we will conduct a “Drink Right” program at Canungra RSL. The session will provide information about drink driving, with demonstrations of the Road Side Breath Testing equipment with a number of test volunteers to show the correlation of alcohol consumed and the resulting breath alcohol concentration. I encourage as many people as possible to attend this event, it can be informative and a bit of fun. Please remember, if you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please come and see us or contact the station on: Canungra Police 5543 5120, Police Link on 131 444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000..

TMC Prep Build Underway!
Tamborine Mountain College Prep purpose built classroom is currently being constructed for 2017 occupancy. What a fabulous addition to the College! The two building project includes four new Primary classrooms, styled along the same lines as the secondary campus, Masterplan, with bright colours, space and light. The rock walls and columns are designed with the rainforest in mind and the names of the buildings will also suit this theme. The Prep building will be named “Platypus” and the other Primary building will be “Kookaburra”. At Secondary level there are only two classes per year level and this will be the case in Primary over time. The reality is that it may happen quicker than expected as many families are seizing the opportunity to have an education for their child on a complete campus, right through from Prep to Yr 12. With the advent of two classes in Primary the College will in essence be “self-feeding”. Some Primary classes may become two streams next year depending upon demand, but classes are filling fast. The College will, however, maintain its philosophy and policy of a small, student-centred campus. Enrolments are filing fast for all year levels and places are limited due to this two stream design. Prep Open Day on Friday 12th August 9.30am – 11am is an ideal opportunity to have a look at the College. The current Prep class will buddy with new students for 2017 so that they can meet the teacher, Mr Fern and get a real taste of life at the College. It will be a fun and educational morning. Parents can see first-hand how TMC operates and ask questions directly of Mr Mark Stevens, Assistant Principal Primary, as well as the College Principal, Mrs June Melbourne.
Show Asks Charities to Compete
Canungra Show is inviting teams to compete for up to $1,000 in prizemoney at the Show on Saturday 20th August. Canungra AH&I Society President, Airlie Worrall said these events would be a major part of the evening entertainment. “We ran bubble football and dunny races last year for the first time,” said Airlie, “They really got the crowds going and we are looking forward to being able to give some great prizemoney to local community organisation as part of our show.” Competitions are available for teams of either five or eight, depending on the competition. Entry is free prior to 15th August (does not include entry to the Show). New Rescue, More Lives Saved
Dog and Cat Animal Rescue Inc (DACAR) became active earlier this year with the main goal to rescue animals needing to find forever homes. With so many animals being dumped, DACAR believes every animal deserves to have a loving home. Caring, helping, rehabilitating, rehoming and actively promoting the care and protection of all animals are what DACAR stands for. Working with other animal rescue groups, DACAR aim to help and care for as many animals as they can. As a not-for-profit and no-kill rescue, DACAR need the help of donations to keep going with their work. The team will be attending the Canungra Show on 20th August to help promote the work they do.

BUDGET 2016-17
Space does not allow me to write as much as I would like regarding the recent budget but please feel free to contact me directly if you wish to discuss it further. A copy of the Community Budget Report is available on Council’s website or on the Mobile Library or I can email you a copy at your request. This Budget is about preparing our region for the future as one of the fastest growing areas in South East Queensland to maximise our growth potential and prosperity for future generations and quite simply ensuring that Scenic Rim is a place we all want to live, work and play. This sentiment reflects the values of the Community Plan - the community owned document underpinning our direction.
BE HEALTHY AND ACTIVE

CANUNGRA SHOW
The 78th Annual Canungra Show is scheduled for Saturday 20th August and will be an expanded event now including Moriarty Park where the Fine Arts will be displayed and miniature goats, dogs, camel rides and vintage machinery will be showcased. If it’s anything like the recent Rodeo, with gate entry the largest in 25 years, this event looks to be one not to be missed. Congratulations to Airlie and all the Show Society members for hosting such a successful event, these events don’t happen without a lot of hard work behind the scenes.

Picturesque St Luke’s Church on Kidston St will be celebrating its 80th anniversary this month. The footpath outside The Pie Shop is now complete and so much safer for all pedestrians. Thank you to all for your patience during the construction phase. Nature’s Gems Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica)
By Melissa Whitby Recently I attended an interesting bird talk with Tim Low as the guest speaker who wrote the incredible book Where Song Began about Australian birdsong and how unique Australian birds are. Mr Low mentioned Australia has one of most unique and largest number of pigeon/dove species in the world. So, that got me thinking a great article for the Canungra Times would be about one of the beautiful pigeon/dove species that lives in South-east Queensland. The species I decided to write about is not always seen but is very easy to identify and is known as the Emerald Dove. Emerald Doves are a relatively small bird with emerald coloured wings and pinkish-brown head and breast. Two races of the Emerald Dove exist with slight plumage differences, however, the distinctive identification of emerald wings and pinkish-brown head remain the same for both races. Usually, this small dove is seen singly or in a pair foraging along the ground in shady cover. Emerald Doves can become very habituated around human settlements. However, birds encountered in natural areas tend to be more cautious and will startle easily and retreat before an observer has the chance to admire their beautiful plumage. These birds can be found in a variety of habitats, which include offshore islands, rainforests, subtropical scrubs, coastal heaths and gardens. The distribution of the Emerald Dove extends along the east coast of Australia down to near the NSW/Victorian border and it can also be seen in the Kimberleys, WA and in the Northern Territory. The breeding season of the Emerald Dove varies throughout this distribution. Emerald Doves build a very basic platform of small twigs in a tree or shrub and lay two eggs. This bird is noted in literature as being common, however, I have found in my travels that the Emerald Dove is not always easy to see and observe. One of the best places to see this beautiful bird is at Natural Emerald Dove Bridge, in Springbrook National Park. Mornings are usually the best times to see the birds out foraging along the track and the road into Natural Bridge. Even after all these years of looking at Emerald Doves, I still marvel at the incredible colour of their wings. I sincerely hope that I continue to see them at Natural Bridge in Springbrook National Park.

Ghost Fungus By Susan Cully
Omphalotus nidiformis Border Track, Binna Burra, Lamington National Park
David Attenborough’s recent program, Life that Glows, was enchanting. Everyone seems to have a fascination with flora and fauna that light up on dark nights. Canungra, Beechmont, Tamborine and Springbrook all have a wealth of bioluminescence; that is … things that glow in the dark emitting phosphorescent light. This glow can be blue and green and even orange. The Ghost Fungus, pictured above, can be found in clusters on old stumps, standing dead trees and fallen trees within the region’s rainforests. The smell, and possibly the light, is very attractive to a multitude of invertebrates, snails, small insects and crustaceans. These can be found devouring the fruiting bodies. There are also luminescent glowing animals to be found on these plateaux: earthworms, caterpillars, gnat larvae and firefly beetles. Glow worms, Arachnocampa spp, are the larval stage of a tiny primitive fly found in caves and moist overhangs. Fireflies, Lampyridae spp, light up our gardens in the spring. These small beetles emit light to communicate with potential mates. The research centre in Springbrook is currently studying Luminous Caterpillars and Luminous Earthworms, not yet identified for science. On a warm summer night you can walk up the road or into the forest and see a myriad of beautiful sights, with the torch on or off.
Maya (ID: 48822) Torbie, domestic short hair cat, female, 3 years. Maya is a beautiful Torbie girl who is looking for a forever home that offers her a safe place to eat, sleep and play. Ideally her new home would see her sharing time between your lap, the sofa and some plush cushions. As an adult cat, she won’t being jumping or climbing your furniture, but she will still enjoy some enrichment playtime each day with you, perhaps playing hide and seek in cardboard boxes. She enjoys human company and being cuddled but is independent enough not to be underfoot. Maya is $50 and is fully desexed, vaccinated and microchipped. Stewart (ID: 52379) Australian Kelpie/Border Collie, Male, 2 years. Stewart is an active young male dog with working dog bloodlines, so he is seeking a forever human friend or a family that will keep him active, interested with enrichment toys and out and about with long daily walks. Stewart has a lot of energy to burn to he would love to find a large property to live on. A willing learner, Stewart has already started training and if he is rehomed to a larger property home continuing his training will help with his enrichment and reward based training. Stewart is sociable with other dogs and will integrate well into a home with an existing dog. Stewart is just $99 to adopt. Included in the adoption fee is his de-sexing, vaccination and microchipping. To meet Maya, Stewart or other animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

News from St Luke’s
By Di Ayscough
In last month’s report, I wondered whether I would fit in with a group of strangers as I went on a camping tour of the Kimberley’s in WA. I am pleased to inform you it was a wonderful experience and the group bonded together through our similar interests and the goals we set out to achieve. Sometimes we can be unnecessarily burdened down by our worries and doubts. Have you ever let worry override your hopes and plans? I know I have and then I realize I don’t have to allow this to happen, If I trust in God. That does not mean God always answers our prayers in a way we hope, but it does mean we can feel an inner peace and know he hears our every word. Bishop Alison came to St Luke’s as planned on 10th July. She delivered a clear message about loving your neighbour. If we all showed care and concern for each other, imagine how much better our world would be. With so many terrible things happening around the world we all need some hope and happiness in our lives. This month we will be celebrating St Luke’s 80th birthday at the annual dinner. It is already fully booked out, the menu and entertainment are planned and we look forward to a great night. I will write about this event next month and there will photos on “Facebook” and the website, so check them out after the 26th August. We have enjoyed welcoming some visitors recently and they have all left St Luke’s feeling pleased they came. Everyone is always welcome.

The Canungra Times Moriarty Park July Sportsperson of the Month - Racheal de Jonge
Racheal de Jonge has only been riding her new horse for just over 18 months, neither of them coming from a jumping or eventing background. They have been training most days and in this year she has achieved so much He was once a polo horse and now competes most weekends in eventing and Hunter Trials.
They competed at Waterford Open Hunter Trials recently taking out first place in their height class. At the Waterford Combined Training Day they placed first in Presentation, Combined Training Prelim 1a Dressage and 60cm Show Jumping; second in Walk trot b Dressage and fourth in Walk Trot c Dressage.
The sport of Hunter Trials is a very competitive/ high risk sport jumping numerous different obstacles through a field course against the time and without being eliminated. Racheal ‘s dedication, commitment towards learning this sport has paid off and will only become better over time. Coming from a girl and her horse who have never competed in Dressage before.
Moriarty Park August Sportspeople of the Month - The Magnificent 7!
By Chris Jarvis (Coach) Under 10’s gold play 9 a side with 2-3 subs but on 9th July we started against Pacific Pines with only six players. The boys realised we were very short on numbers, likely to get beat and I just told them to enjoy themselves, play no set positions but play for each other as a team. I said missing a goal 10 times between them will not feel as bad as one person letting 10 goals in so we need to defend as a team and attack when we can as a team. That was all I said. They let a goal in from the very first attack against them but rather than letting their heads go down you could see them respond together. They scored a fantastic goal to equalise from a passing move involving four of the six kids and defended like their lives depended on it. Page 26
After 10 minutes they were 3-1 up and playing the best I have ever seen my team play. Another player arrived 10 minutes in. As he was putting his shirt on I explained how short we were, that there is no positions today and we are all playing where we need to at the time and to defend and attack together. He ran on the pitch, scored with what seemed like his first touch and got back defending from the kick off. With seven players, no subs and no rests the boys won 11-3 against a team with rotating substitutes and fresh legs. I was so proud of what I watched these boys do for each other together I can’t put it in words. All the boys played everywhere including three different goalkeepers with no complaints or not wanting to go in the net.
The Canungra Times August 2016
It was special to see but more was the maturity in their play. Instead of trying to run past players and do things on their own they just passed the opposition off the park and as a coach it was so rewarding to see such young guys playing with such confidence, purpose and skill. I won’t forget the performance for a long time and my only regret is I never took a photo of their worn out but smiling faces at the end. The man of the match award went to the entire team and I know the mums and dads watching were blown away. My magnificent seven were Luke Clift, Nelson Browning, Chase Della, Dylan Jarvis, Jayden Hughes, Brock Garrett and Patrick Bennett. Seven players, 11-3 win! Brilliant!!

By Lana Rankin, Vice President It’s hard to believe there are only a couple more rounds to go before the kids hang up their soccer boots for another season! For those who are not aware, Stephen has stepped down from the Club President role – on behalf of the Canungra Owls Soccer Club, I would like to take this opportunity to thank Stephen for his time and the enthusiasm he showed as President. As Vice President, I will take on the role for the remainder of the season. Although soccer season finishes this month, it’s an exciting time for the Owls, as we are hosting our very first carnival! The Bren Dalby Carnival will be held on Sunday 14th August at Moriarty Park and is open to all U9 and U10 teams currently playing under Gold Coast Football. If you’d like more information, please contact us via email (canungraowls@outlook.com). We’ll look at extending the invitation to more age groups in the future. This year’s end of season Presentation for our Squirts, Miniroos and Juniors will be held at Moriarty Park on Sunday 28th August, from 9.30am. Mark it in your diary! Our Men’s team will have a separate presentation night with details being promulgated to the individual team members. We’d like to extend a huge thank you to Alpha-h Skin Care for donating a couple of skin care packages worth over $400, which we are utilising for an end of year raffle. The canteen will be selling tickets ($2 each/ 3 for $5) up until the Presentation Day. If you’re a business owner and would like to donate a raffle prize, please let us know! Good luck to our U12 team, who have made it into the Finals – well done to Jake and the kids for a fantastic first competition season …Hoot Hoot!

Fighters Head to Ireland
Next month local Muay Thai fighters Samantha and Cameron Torrens are heading over to Ireland to represent Austrlia in the WAKO world kickboxing championships. A select group of fighters from around Australia will train for a week training in the Swiss Alps before going to Ireland. This competition is something a little different to their normal fight style of Muay Thai, however both fighters are prepared for the challenge. With a few speed bumps thrown in the way of their strict training regime they managed to overcome the hurdles and the brother and sister say they are really looking forward to the trip and are prepared to show the world what Australia has. Cameron earned his selection in the Australian team after enduring a tough fight to take out the Wako Australian title belt while Samantha, who has made herself a name taking on tough opponents in the ring, was also offered the opportunity to fight for her country. The teenagers will spend the next few weeks giving their all to their training in the hope that their determination and dedication pays off and they can bring home gold.

Moriarty Park News
By Bren Dalby (Sportsperson Awards see page 26)
Things are popping along quite nicely at Moriarty Park (MP), not least the balloons at the disco on Friday 22nd July - which was a rip roaring success! It would seem all involved had a great night! Thanks to all those who attended and especially to those who made a terrific effort dressing up for the theme: anything beginning with an M or a P! There were some fabulous outfits with Princesses, pirates, mice, monsters and even a mime artist who could have doubled as a Parisienne, and my particular favourite! Parents were a wonderful help, and a huge thanks to the staff from our school without whom we couldn’t have held such a night. A few special dance moves were demonstrated by Miss Dare too I might add! Will Nicholson as one of our Moriarty Park representatives at the school was a tremendous help, even after I trampled him in the canteen in my haste to get to a sour gecko!, and I am certainly hoping he will risk life and limb to help at the next one! Jason from Ozwerx disco delivered the goods beautifully, with assistance from Jacob and his mate (who’s name I missed to be fair as the volume was right up there!); btw, any disco requirements anyone may have please see Jason at the Hardware in town. Thanks to the crew from MP for helping organise, run, and then clean up! Needless to say, Foodworks, as always, helped us out in the food and beverage department, supplying sausages, bread, drinks etc. and therefore making the night an even bigger success. Hard to imagine life in Canungra without Tony and Anne and the team from Foodworks! A new ‘happening’ at MP will be dog obedience classes run by Peter and Julie from von Ambach kennels, as well as more advanced canine activities. This is a great service Peter and Julie are offering the community, giving of their knowledge and expertise and of course their time to educate our local dogs and owners. For those who know me, you will understand why I am so supportive and grateful for this to be on offer here and I hope we can be seen as an example for other areas to promote a similar practice. There are many who can benefit in so many ways; an obedient well mannered dog is a pleasure to own and a well mannered dog owner who knows even the basics is a pleasure to encounter. Soccer season is nearly over, so if you get a chance, pop along for the last few games and support our local teams. Great club with amazing helpers volunteering their time. This year MP is involved with some of the activities for Canungra Show on 20th August and this is pretty exciting for us. Gonna be a great show so book out the day for a fun filled family affair! We are starting to plan our Christmas Carols on 3rd December. We would love any assistance and are setting up a sub committee to put it all together. If anyone is interested please contact Bren on bren.dalby@bigpond.com or 0414 435 919. We are also in search of local talent to perform on the night so please come forward and make it a great night!
