The small country town of Canungra is going to be full the brim with show goers and rodeo fans because for the first time in the Canungra Show Society’s history, the Show and Canungra Hotel Rodeo will be held on the same weekend. Due inclement weather that forced the postponement of the Canungra Hotel Rodeo, Canungra will be alive with action on the weekend of 26th and 27th August with the Show on the Saturday and Rodeo on the Sunday. The Canungra Show is celebrating the 79th running and for the second year will be held over both the show grounds and Moriarty Park on Coburg Road giving show goers more show and events for the same price. The Show always provides an enormous amount of entertainment, engaging activities for people of all ages, fine street foods, ring events, cattle and other animal attractions, arts and crafts, show bags and so much more. 2017 promises to deliver bigger attractions, more forms of entertainment and activities for the whole family than ever before. A new attraction to the Show is the Retro Picnic by Design Collective. The Retro Picnic will bring all kinds of cars, entertainers, market stalls and plenty to see and do and is an exciting addition to the Show. Also at Moriarty Park is camel rides, billy cart races, flyball for dogs, a novelty dog show and the Brisbane Roar Inflatable soccer field. The showgrounds will hold many of the other fun and exciting events including

Perfect Canvas for this Artist This is something Alex Wilson won’t learn duirng his painting apprenticeship! The talented graffiti artist recently painted this unique mural for Paul and Shona Kraayvanger at Canungra Hub in only a few days. Alex said his background in art began during his teenage years when he began hanging with the ‘wrong crowd’ and got into a bit of trouble for graffiti around Nerang. “I could have gone one of two ways,” said Alex, “But fortunately I got into art and started learning new techniques with the spray paint.” At only 26 years of age, Alex spent 10 years working as a butcher and has recnetly started an apprenticeship as a painter, painting houses. The inspiration for the mural on the hub came from a picture Paul and Shona showed Alex. “It looks similar but I like to put my own spin on things rather than copying someone else’s work,” said Alex. The striking mural is of a young redhead girl with a watering can, seemingly watering the garden outside the Canungra Hub. Alex makes special nozzles for the spray paint to create different effects in the painting, such as the fine hair on the girl in the mural. Relief
Given
for
Flood
Victims
By Bren Dalby Just after the floods in March which left several families without homes to live in (some still don’t) and serious devastation to their houses and belongings, Moriarty Park held a trivia night and it was decided that the monies raised should somehow go to those families as a small token to let them know they were being thought of. This wasn’t a significant amount of course and so I approached the Op Shop to see if they might match the amount and make it at least a little more significant ... they blew us away with a no qualms offer to assist each family with a very significant amount which, to keep the ‘circle of life’ alive and well in our great community was turned into vouchers from Foodworks. They also donated vouchers for the Op Shop to each of those families. This was hugely appreciated by all recipients and I think it is wonderful that this gesture was made and just proves what a magic area we live in. Photo: Recipents of the Flood assistance from Moriarty Park and Canungra Op Shop. Inset: Canungra Op Shop Manager Caroline Andrew; President of Moriarty Park, Bren Dalby; and Treasurer of Canungra Op Shop Michelle Aldridge.

The Bower art installation ready to be lowered into position in the new park on Gallery Walk
michael.mitchell@kdvsport.com
Bower Has Landed
An artwork drawing on nature and inspired by the rainforest masterpieces created by Tamborine Mountain’s avian artisans, The Bower has landed in a park nearing completion on Gallery Walk. Lowered into place by a crane, the two elements - 5.8 metres high and crafted from Australian hardwood to depict a Satin Bower Bird’s nest - form the centrepiece of Rhoda Rushbrook Park, where The Bower will become a landmark gateway for the Scenic Rim region. Scenic Rim Regional Council received $100,000 for the Story Markers Project from the Queensland Tourism Infrastructure Fund. Mayor Greg Christensen said the artworks, co-funded by Council, will create regional gateway markers at Canungra and Tamborine Mountain for a new tourist trail under the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative. The Bower, created by Richard Howie and Nicole Jeske, was commissioned for Tamborine Mountain on the recommendation of the Scenic Rim Arts Reference Group following community feedback on a shortlist of designs. Chair Yoga Classes
Canungra Yoga has been getting some amazing feedback from their ‘Chair Yoga’ classes. These classes are tailored specifically for people with limited mobility but still have a desire to keep moving and increase their flexibility and coordination. The class is all done sitting in a chair (or supported by the chair). The participants who have been going regularly to the classes have noticed more ease of movement in their bodies while doing their every day activities and the breathing techniques they are learning have been very helpful in managing things like anxiety and pain. This month is a big month for Canungra Yoga as their team is expanding and they have several new classes on the timetable! There is now a Pilates class, a 6am “Yoga Shred” class and a Mums and Bubs/ Toddlers class - something for all ages and abilities.

Local Girls Sharing the Dignity
Brownies from the 1st Tamborine Mountain Girl Guides cooked up a storm on Sunday at the Canungra Valley Markets. Funds raised went to Share the Dignity, a not-for-profit organisation providing homeless women, and those in refuge, with hygiene and sanitary products. In addition to the sausage sizzle, the girls sold cupcakes, cookies and caramels to a hungry patronage, raising over $160 as part of their Community Service badge. August is #DignityDrive month, with collection points established across Australia from 1st – 31st August. Every pack donated goes directly to women and girls in need. Follow this link to find your nearest collection point. https://www.sharethedignity.com. au/collection-points.html
Record Grants As Interest Grows For Green Projects A record number of individuals and community groups will share in more than $100,000 of Council environmental grants to help preserve and enhance the Scenic Rim’s green spaces and wildlife habitats. Corporate and Community Services Chair Cr Virginia West said Council received a record number of 35 applications from schools, environmental groups, community groups and landholders for funding through Council’s 2017 Environmental Grants Program - 15 more than in 2016. “All but two of those applications, which were outside the scope of the Environmental Grants Program, were funded either fully or in part, which is a wonderful outcome for the region,” she said. “This year’s Environmental Grants Program provides funding for new projects as well as the continuation of existing projects, highlighting Council’s commitment to working hand-in-hand with the community on conservation initiatives.” Some 23 grants were allocated to landowners for Land for Wildlife projects on private property, while schools, landcare groups and community associations also shared in the $101,500 of available funding. “Council recognises the significant contribution of landowners to preserving habitats
for native plants and animals on private property through Land for Wildlife,” Cr West said. “It also values highly the work of community organisations such as Landcare, whose efforts to preserve and enhance our natural environment by maintaining Council reserves also represent cost savings for ratepayers.” Many of the grants were awarded for the control of invasive weeds and for tree planting, including projects by Tamborine Mountain State School and Canungra State School. “Council is pleased to support the efforts of the next generation of Scenic Rim residents who are growing up with an awareness of the importance of protecting the natural environment for which this region is renowned,” Cr West said. Initiatives funded under Council’s 2017 Environmental Grants Program include: LAND FOR WILDLIFE: • Craig Bourke, for the control of weeds and planting of trees on a property at Darlington Range Road Witheren which contains remnant rainforest. • John Daniel Hellyer, to undertake weed control in rainforest area located in Canungra.
• Garth Powell, for on-going weed control and tree planting in a land slip area on Beechmont plateau. • Gregory Luck, to treat riparian weeds along Canungra Creek to allow endangered gallery rainforest regeneration. • Trish Chadwick, to treat environmental weeds along Magpie Creek at Boyland. COMMUNITY GROUP PROJECTS: • Beechmont Landcare, for ongoing weed control in Denham Scenic Reserve. • Tamborine Mountain Landcare, to undertake weed management and revegetation works on more than fifteen Council reserves on Tamborine Mountain. • Biddaddaba Creek Group, for on-going weed control along Biddaddaba Creek. • Lamington Landcare, for contractors to treat weeds along Christmas Creek. SCHOOL PROJECTS: • Tamborine Mountain State School, for a boardwalk through a rainforest planting in the school and also some weed treatment in a significant remnant rainforest on the Tamborine Mountain plateau. • Canungra State School, for ongoing weed control and tree planting along Canungra Creek beside the school.

Council Forges Ahead With Vibrancy Vision Council is pressing ahead with the delivery of two key town centre vibrancy projects at Tamborine Mountain and Boonah. Mayor Greg Christensen today announced Council would fund the construction of both the Village Greens stages of the Main Street revitalisation on Tamborine Mountain and new Boonah town square precinct. “We will continue to pursue opportunities for co-funding assistance from higher levels of government to support the implementation of our Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative,” he said “In the meantime, however, we are not going to sit on our hands and will be forging ahead to deliver on the outcomes of these two projects during the 2017-18 year. “Council has reviewed its position and has sufficient funds in the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages capital budget to progress these town centre projects under our own steam. “While it was disappointing that we were unsuccessful in the current round of the Building Our Regions program, a lack of government assistance will not prevent us from delivering the work that needs to be done in our local communities over the longer term. “As I have said from outset, grant funding merely provides an opportunity for us to bring
forward or accelerate the timing of some of our planned projects. I’m excited that we are continuing to progress the next important stages in the transformative journey for our Scenic Rim communities.” Cr Christensen said the delivery of the Village Greens on Tamborine Mountain had been identified as the priority project as these works needed to be completed in time for the Queen’s Baton Relay and Commonwealth Games in April 2017. “At the same time, we will also progress the detailed design of the Boonah town square precinct with the objective of commencing construction works in the second half of 2017-18 and continuing into early 2018-19,” he said. “Similar to Tamborine Mountain we will be engaging with the Boonah community on the final design which will be drawn from the master plan concepts. The scope of this project will incorporate High Street, Park Street and the Council forecourt space.” Cr Christensen said there remained plenty of avenues for Council to pursue for grant funding over the life of the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative. “Thus far in 2017, we have delivered vibrancy projects in three communities with co-funding from other State and Federal programs.
Boonah’s Railway St and Rhoda Rushbrook Park on Tamborine Mountain are complete, while improvements to the Tamborine Memorial Hall precinct will soon be finished,” he said. “The positive feedback we have received from the community, particularly in relation to the vibrancy work which has been undertaken in Railway Street and on Gallery Walk, has been gratifying and has only strengthened my resolve to deliver our program of revitalisation. “The three town centre master plans for Boonah, Beaudesert and Tamborine Mountain will have a lifecycle of up to 10 years, not to mention the future master planning processes for other communities within this timeframe, so there will be many opportunities for higher levels of government to contribute further to our vibrancy vision. “These town centre master plans were recently lauded as Queensland’s best example of landscape planning by the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects which is a significant accolade for our region.” Cr Christensen said later this year Council would be considering the timetable for further master planning in additional Scenic Rim communities.

Damage Assessment Close To Completion
Council is close to completing a full damage assessment of the local road and bridge network as part of the Scenic Rim’s disaster recovery and infrastructure restoration process. “In the immediate aftermath of ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie we completed a rapid damage assessment with a focus on directing Council resources to restoring community connectivity during the emergent works period,” Mayor Greg Christensen said. “This included clearing almost 40 land slips and building temporary sidetracks around damaged bridges to help get our region moving again. “However, these priority works were just the tip of the iceberg and we are now moving into a long-term program of infrastructure restoration under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements, co-funded by the State and Federal governments.” Cr Christensen said a full damage assessment of the road and bridge network had been undertaken by Council staff and engineering contractors over the past few weeks. “This assessment has required a visual inspection of every road and bridge within Scenic Rim, which equates to about 1800 kilometres of road and 129 bridges, to document all damage and deterioration as a result of the storms and flooding,” he said.
“What we know at the moment is that 50 of our bridges have sustained damage and 530 of our local roads have been impacted. “Council is in the fortunate position that it had only just completed a full video assessment of the road network prior to ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie as part of its asset management program.

“As a result, we have a wealth of recent comparative data to illustrate the pre-disaster and post-disaster condition of roads, which will assist will the validation and processing of future claims under NDRRA. “We expect the timeframe for the completion of these works will be upwards of 18 months, so I do ask for the patience and understanding of the community.”

A Show of Community With the Show and the rescheduled Rodeo coming up on the weekend of 26th and 27th August we have the opportunity for our community to showcase the best of our area. Traditionally, agricultural shows have been the social event of the year, especially for small towns like ours. I always find it exciting on the Friday to see the carnival rides going up, entries for the pavilions coming in and to look at what everyone has contributed to the show. This year we were fortunate to have some lovely women involved in the Main Pavilion, Robyn Mahony and Linda Ashton, who have gone to the Canungra State School to take cooking and craft activities for the students so they can then enter their products in the Show. Robyn took on the daunting task of running the Pavilion last year and, with the support of a great team of (mainly) women, has done a fantastic job. Another mainstay of this section of the Show is Alison Koger, who has been instrumental in the running of the Pavilion and a great help to me as Secretary. All these people are volunteers, bringing two great days of entertaiment and tradition to our community with no expectation of a return for themselves. Get along to the Show and Rodeo and please put entries into the Pavilion to make it a real Show of Community

Hi Keer, Once again, this month, I have been reminded of the generosity that abounds in the Canungra community. Along with five others who have had homes significantly affected by flood waters, post-cyclone Debbie, I received vouchers from the Canungra Op Shop and Canungra FoodWorks as a result of a Moriarty Park fundraiser and much hard work on the behalf of tireless community volunteer Bren Dalby. Almost four months since the flood we are all still in the process of rebuilding our homes and dealing with the endless cleaning, packing, unpacking and reorganising. So, it was a great boost to know that we still have the support of this great community and I would particularly like to thank the Canungra Op Shop for their very generous donation. These are people who deserve all our support for their great contributions to so many in Canungra. Thank you again for your generosity. Sonya Gubbins
Vietnam and Veterans Day
Many Vietnam veterans have told me that on returning home from the Vietnam War, Second World War Veterans looked down their noses at them and pushed them to one side. Since the end of the Vietnam War, the Australian Defence Force has been involved in the following conflicts around the world: Somalia; Rwanda; East Kashmir; Cambodia; Namibia; Western Sahara; East Timor, First and Second Gulf War; Bougainville; Solomon Islands; Iraq and Australia’s longest war to date - Afghanistan. This year, the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch and Vietnam Veterans extend the hand of friendship to all those veterans who served in the aforementioned conflicts. The remembrance service to be held at D J Smith Park on 18th August 2017 at 10.30am will enable both Vietnam and the more recent or ‘New Age’ Veterans to gather, remember and honour those who we joined with, trained with and deployed with, but those who did not return home with us - those who paid the ultimate sacrifice. To my knowledge, this will be the first time that Vietnam Veterans have asked our ‘New Age’ Veterans to join us on this day. If this is the case, then a little bit of history will be made. I, therefore, encourage all Vietnam and ‘New Age’ Veterans, and the citizens of the Canungra Area to gather at 10.30am for this special occasion. I look forward to having the honour and privilege of sharing this day with you. Col Lee President, Canungra RSL Sub-Branch
Ormiston House
To Whom It May Concern, Historic Ormiston House, the birthplace of Queensland’s sugar industry, is celebrating the 50th Anniversary since the first Restoration Committee of Ormiston House was formed. We are holding a celebration in October this year, and we are trying to track down as many former committee members from Ormiston House as possible. We would like to put out a call for former committee members from Ormiston House to contact us. The original restoration committee was formed in 1967, and many former members have resettled throughout Queensland. We are attempting to locate as many people who have been committee members since that time, right up to the present day. We are asking people to get in touch with us via phone (0457 675 137) or email (administrator@ormistonhouse.org.au) if they have ever been on a Committee at Ormiston House, or if they know of anyone who used to be on a Committee at Ormiston House. Kind regards, Jessica Stroja, Historian | Historic Ormiston House

Canungra Heritage CANUNGRA POLICE STATION
By Joyce Libke An extract from “Canungra Heritage 1879 – 1979” published for Canungra’s Centenary in 1979 states :The Canungra Police Station was opened soon after the railway came [1915] and the present building was erected in Kidston Street. Some of the early policemen were Christie, Jack Miners (1917) and Adam Horn in (1930) and Bowles. The first two rode everywhere, being provided with beautiful horses to cover the large area under their control and always wearing leather leggings as part of their uniform. Many policemen have come and gone and perhaps the best remembered were the Dunnemanns who turned the area around the police station into a beautiful park-like garden with masses of trees and flowers – a joy to behold. The only other mention is accompanied by a photograph of the Armistice Day procession passing the Police Station, Kidston Street” with a photograph - the only photograph of the Station in the early days that is in the albums in the Canungra Information Centre. The house, part of which is still in use today, and the outhouse are clearly visible in this photo as well as two other buildings. It is not known what the one in the middle was used for - accommodation for a second officer or a store room perhaps. The building with a verandah, on the right of this photo, was the lock-up. Apparently it was lined with metal sheeting to prevent any escapes!
We are looking to record the history of Canungra and for any stories associated with this building -- has anyone in the past 102 years actually been “locked up”. If there is anyone who remembers being told about the use of the “lock-up” the Canungra & District Heritage Society would be very keen to speak to you.
Please get in touch with Joyce Libke by phone 5543 5212 or email djlibke@ bigpond.com. The next meeting of the Canungra & District Heritage Society is on Friday 11th August at 10.30am at Canungra Hub. All welcome.

Neville and Isabel Appleyard are back and they are not alone! They have been joined at Funky Dory by Dempsey and Jess Nutley to bring great fish and chips, burgers and more back to Canungra. Neville and Isabel are mentoring Dempsey and Jess through the business to ensure continuity and quality for their customers. Dempsey said they have plans to build the business back up with good quality ingredients and friendly service, as well as a family-friendly environment. “With a young son ourselves we understand what families with young children want when they eat out,” he said. “We are looking at creating more of a diner with more room for people to eat in. We will be starting hot chicken and chip meals, coleslaw and other salads,” he said. “Over time we will put in a kids’ corner, slushie machine and soft serve ice-cream machine. We are also looking at a local delivery service.” Dempsey and Jess have already made some small changes, bringing in a delicious

New Classes in the Pavilion Decorated Birthday Cake (any theme)
For the first time the Canungra Show is inviting competitors to enter decorated birthday cakes. Cakes can be based on any theme, from children’s cakes to elaborate cakes suitable for all ages. This is a great opportunity for our local cakemakers to get creative and show what they can do! The Juvenile classes also include decorated patty cakes for Middle and Secondary school children. It will be great to see the Pavilion’s cookery display cabinets full of colour and imaginative designs this year! For more information see the cooking classes in this program or contact the Pavilion Chief Steward.
Dark Rich Fruit Cake Competition
There are several new classes in the Pavilion this year, one of which is the Dark Rich Fruit Cake competition. The winner of this competition can, if they wish, go on to represent Canungra in the SubChamber (regional) Dark Rich Fruit Cake competition, the winner of which goes on to the State Final at the Ekka! This competition is a real test of skills in the art of baking a Dark Rich Fruit Cake for those who wish to maintain a heritage culture which has been renowned for generations. A set recipe is not provided - exhibitors are permitted to use their own tried and proven recipe in accordance with the Queensland Shows Rules. All the exhibits for the final must be a 500g mixture (25 1/2 cm tin) and are displayed on the Queensland Shows stand at the Royal Queensland Show. A suggested recipe is below:
DARK RICH FRUIT CAKE RECIPE INGREDIENTS 500g Sunbeam raisins 500g Sunbeam sultanas 500g Sunbeam currants 125g mixed peel 125g cherries 2 cups brown sugar
2 cups butter 12 eggs 3 cups plain flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 125g almonds 1 teaspoon mixed spice
1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 teaspoon lemon essence 1 tablespoon syrup 1 tablespoon (small) plum jam 1 cup rum or brandy
METHOD Soak fruit in rum or brandy overnight. Beat butter and sugar to a cream, add eggs (which have been beaten), add sifted flour, baking powder, spice, salt and a cup of prepared flour mixture, then fold in the fruit. Add a little more flour if it is necessary. If too stiff, add 1/2 cup orange juice. Place the mixture in a prepared cake tin 251⁄2 cm square. Bake in a slow oven (130°C-140°C) for approx. 5-6 hours or until cooked when tested. Allow the cake to cool in the tin.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
NEW REGIONAL GATEWAY PRECINCT OPENED It is certainly worth a trip to Tamborine Mountain’s Gallery Walk to see the new Scenic Rim Story Marker Project - Rhoda Rushbrook Park - with its fabulous five-metre high timber representation of a bower bird’s bower, sandstone play structures of flame tree seed pods and interpretive poetry by local poets. This area will be showcased to the world as the Commonwealth Games baton travels along part of Tamborine Mountain in the last stop before the Gold Coast. The next Story Marker Project to be installed will be the entry sign for Canungra to be placed in the gardens near the School of Arts car park. The artist has experienced a hold-up with materials but I am assured the project is nearing completion and installation.
CANUNGRA SHOW AND RODEO Make sure you mark Saturday 26th August and Sunday 27th August in your diaries for a huge weekend of fun in Canungra. The Show will be even bigger and more exciting this year and, as wet weather forced the postponement of the Rodeo in July, there will be double the fun with the Show and Rodeo over one weekend. Our country shows are very much part of our rural heritage hosted entirely by very dedicated volunteers to showcase our spectacular region.
ENVIRONMENTAL GRANTS ANNOUNCED A record number of landowners and community groups applied for grants this year and will all have a share of the $100,000 funds allocated to enhancing wildlife habitats and green spaces. It is particularly pleasing to see Canungra State School and a number of local landowners receive funding for their continued care of our environment. I thank all those involved for their hard work and commitment to our environment.
OFF-LEASH DOG PARK Local dog owners will be pleased to see the off-leash dog park has been rebuilt following its complete destruction by ex-Topical Cyclone Debbie.
DISASTER RESTORATION WORK Currently, data is being collected of Council’s entire road and bridge network, including culverts and drains, to present to the QRA as part of the NDRRA funding process. Council vehicles are travelling at reduced speed, photographing and videoing the damage, as part of this process. As a Council experienced in this process, we have already secured funding for the replacement of Haack Bridge at Lamington. If your road has deteriorated since the cyclone, or the subsequent wet weather, please report it by phoning Council on 5540 5111.

The top section of Lamington National Park Road, en route to O’Reilly’s, is still undergoing work and will be for many months as specialised crews continue to repair the cyclone damage.

On Friday 9th June the School’s netballers competed at the annual Netball Gala day as part of interschool sport between St Bernards, Tamborine, Beechmont and our school. The weather was terrific, with all teams (two junior and two senior) playing six games each. We were lucky once again to have our wonderful Tamborine State High School students come and umpire and score for us, many of them past students. This year we also had two development officers from Netball Qld who also umpired and gave guidance to our student umpires when needed. We were also privileged to share the day with Caitlyn Nevins (Qld Firebirds and Australian Diamonds player). She was a very approachable and friendly “star attraction”. All of the students got to meet her, have a chat, get signed posters and autographs and some were even lucky enough to have her umpire their games or even have her play on their team. This added to the overall excitement and enjoyment of the day. Our students should be very proud of their skill and effort. We held training for the month before and it showed on the court. Thank you to our staff who gave up their lunch times to give our teams some extra training. The level of skill from all teams has improved greatly. Beechmont once again won the overall trophy but this year we certainly made it much harder for them. It was great to see so much enthusiasm and sportsmanship displayed by our students with some students helping out other schools who needed extra numbers to fill teams. Well done Canungra.

The Jewel in the Rainforest
By Susan Cully The beetle pictured at right, Metaxymorpha grayii, has not been given a common name. It belongs to the large beetle family Buprestidae known as jewel beetles or metallic wood-boring beetles because of their bright and iridescent colours and decorative patterns. The habitat required by this beautiful jewel beetle is good quality rainforest. In Queensland this beetle is found in only a few localities, including Beechmont. Because of its preference for undisturbed habitat, the population is found predominately in protected areas and in National Parks. In these rainforests environments they join the bees and wasps as important pollinators of native and introduced plant species. The beetle is not endangered. The larvae of this beetle, Metaxymorpha grayii, are thought to be wood borers. The larval host tree remains a mystery. The adult beetle is nectarivorous, i.e. primarily feeding on the nectar of its preferred native species of host plants when those plants are in peak bloom. Its preferred native species of host plants include: Euodia, Leptospermum, and likely also the flowers of Angophora and Eucalyptus species growing near its rainforest habitats. The adult beetle will also feed at the flowers of the introduced pest, Privet (Ligustrum species) when in bloom. The beetle will not be found on the flowers of such plants that are not in peak bloom, even if only a day or two past peak bloom.

CCA & SCA Deliver Biosecurity Workshops
From 1st October 2017, sheep, goat and cattle producers will need to complete a Farm Biosecurity Plan (FBP) to maintain or obtain accreditation under the Livestock Production Assurance program (LPA). The LPA program is the Australian livestock industry’s on-farm assurance program covering food safety, animal welfare and biosecurity. It provides evidence of livestock history and on-farm practices when transferring livestock through the value chain. To assist cattle and sheep producers in developing and implementing a Farm Biosecurity Plan, a series of workshops will be rolled out across Australia over the next two months. More than twenty workshops will be delivered by Cattle Council of Australia (CCA) and Sheepmeat Council of Australia (SCA). These workshops are funded by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Animal Health Australia (AHA) and are designed to engage directly with producers to guide them through the development of a Farm Biosecurity Plan. The requirement to develop a Farm Biosecurity Plan follows the introduction of a biosecurity element into the LPA program. To meet the requirements of the LPA program, as minimum, each Property Identification Code (PIC) must have a formal, documented Farm Biosecurity Plan. Cattle Council of Australia President, Howard Smith said, “With the impending implementation of industry biosecurity changes, the impetus is on producers to manage biosecurity risks. To assist in this, it is vital producers are given opportunities to access the support needed to develop and
implement their farm biosecurity plans in the timeframes required”. SCA CEO, Dr Kat Giles said “Best-practice biosecurity prevents the spread of infectious disease and invasive pests or weeds between farms, helping protect Australia’s favourable animal health status. “Biosecurity procedures also provide significant advantages for access to international markets”. “Producers attending the workshops will be provided with an in-depth understanding of what is required for farm biosecurity planning, to protect their business and Australia’s animal health status. At the workshops cattle and sheep producers will be supported to complete the farm biosecurity plan, and will have the knowledge to carry out a farm biosecurity assessment and to finalise their plan when they return home. Additional to the Farm Biosecurity Plan, cattle producers can choose to also have a Johne’s Beef Assurance Score (J-BAS). This has been developed as a tool for managing Johne’s Disease (JD) to reduce the effect of the disease on production and avoid potential domestic and/or overseas live-trade implications from JD.
Deadline for September edition of the Canungra Times is Wednesday 23rd August Call 5543 5532 or email
news@canungratimes.com.au
for all enquiries.
Cattle producers who have already developed a Farm Biosecurity Plan as part of their approach to JD management will not need to complete another plan to meet LPA requirements. “Through these workshops we are aiming to provide cattle producers with assistance to develop a Farm Biosecurity Plan which incorporates J-BAS, and therefore meets the requirements for both LPA and JD” said Mr Smith. State Farming Organisations have been leading the way in providing producers with farm biosecurity information. These workshops have been designed to assist and further extend these activities. The workshops will include presentations from the Integrity Systems Company and the Livestock Biosecurity Network (LBN). This will be followed by practical, hands-on sessions to allow producers to develop their Farm Biosecurity Plans. For producers who can’t attend workshops, online support through webinars and other online resources will also be provided. For more information about the workshops and dates, visit: http://www.lbn.org.au/.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Where is the year going? Do you ask yourself this question every year as you suddenly realize we are already into the month of August? I know I do, but somehow 2017 seems to be moving faster than past years. The Canungra community activities coming up are endless with the Show, the postponed Rodeo and turning Canungra “Pink” all having their final plans put into place. For St. Luke’s, the focus this month is to plan our Annual Dinner. As mentioned last month this will take place on Friday evening the 1st September. You are welcome to attend for a cost of $25-00 per person (BYO) where you can enjoy a five-course meal. There will be lots of raffles, prizes, and free entertainment. With only 40 seats available it is important to book early by phoning David on 07 5533 7070. We must thank the local RE teachers who provided a lovely array of food and entertainment to fundraise for our local schools RE books. This is an important part of educating our young people as they face life and the many challenges which will be ahead of them. Thank you to all who supported this function. We have been pleased to welcome some fresh faces in recent weeks, as well as visitors who are drawn in by our bright new exterior and who find the blessings and warmth of God once inside. If you feel life’s challenges are becoming a burden, we are here to help in any way possible. We at St Luke’s can help lighten your load. Please don’t hesitate to ask, or come along and feel welcomed. You will find a friendly bunch of caring people who really do want to help.

By Luke Balcke Us Owls love this time of year! Blue sky days, crisp mornings and very little rain. It is great to see the smile on the kids’ faces as schedule training and game-days go off without a hitch. As self appointed Chief Line Marker there is an even bigger smile on my face as the Club took possession of a brand new line marking machine, courtesy of the continued support from our local Canungra & District Community Bank. Thank you! The Rolls Royce of line marking machines has cut the painting time in half and makes a dodgy painter like myself look good. With the end of season rapidly approaching there is still a lot of football to get through. The under 15 girls and the under 12 mixed team are in line for finals football in August/September if they can press hard for some wins in the last few rounds. Here is to wishing them the best of luck! We are excited to announce the date of the annual Bren Dalby Carnival on Sunday 20th August. The carnival will be open to
U9 and U10 teams currently playing in the Gold Coast Football Miniroos competition. We are expecting another hugely successful day for the Club and encourage everyone to come down and support our up and coming players of the future. Yet again, we’d like to extend thanks to Canungra & District Community Bank, who are sponsoring this event. Although we had a slow start to this season with prolonged rain delays and boggy fields
we are bracing ourselves for a strong finish and are happy to announce the end of season presentation for our Junior and Miniroo teams will be held on Sunday 10th September. Our Senior’s presentation is planned for Saturday 2nd September … mark it in your diaries! Let’s make the remaining few weeks of the season our best! Hoot Hoot!

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
Fitness Modules
Check out the new fitness modules at Moriarty Park! How good?! Please make good use of them and enjoy! Thanks to Scott Dalby for allowing his dear Mother to hijack him at super short notice to help her put the temporary fencing up to enable work to commence! Trivia was a fun night again this month and all new faces present! Tony and Anne from FoodWorks provided us with the super prizes which was appreciated greatly. Unfortunately Stu, our compere, was taken ill but Mum Jean took over the job and was brilliant. Stu is on the improve thank goodness. Next trivia night is scheduled for 23rd September, see notices closer to time but still BYO nibbles and drinks etc and sponsored by FoodWorks!! and there will be a PINK trivia night on 13th October. Talking of PINK ... Moriarty Park will be hosting the launch of Turning Canungra Pink on Sunday 1st October, so look out for all the activities that will be held throughout the day; gonna be HUGE!!!! Keep your calendar free !
Anyone
for
Tennis??
Break Point Tennis are keen to be involved in our community to expose us all to the joys of playing tennis and have organised a promo at our school mid August. Moriarty Park have recently, with help from Michael from Break Point tennis, had new nets and winders fitted ... huge thanks to Canungra Op Shop for footing the bill for this much needed upgrade.
Thanks also to Craig Martin for cleaning up the courts and I have to say the place is looking pretty schmick, ready for a great evening of fun and tennis at Moriarty Park on 18th August. Come along and join us and partake of the sausage sizzle provided generously as ever for us by Canungra FoodWorks. Keep an eye out for further info on happenings on the evening.
Book Club
Book Club on the second Tuesday of each month is proving popular and all welcome to come along with a plate (filled! ... don’t laugh, I have seen them come empty to previous events!) at 7pm.
Netball
Now come on you budding netballers.....still only have about four people interested but I am hoping as soccer season comes to a close that we may have a few more takers. Roll up you guys!
Pilates
Pilates is still available to all on Tuesday nights at 5.30pm and Thursday nights at 6pm ... numbers have dwindled somewhat presumably due to the cooler nights but these are fabulous classes run by Alanna Phillips and I can personally vouch for the benefits I already feel from attending. Come along and try; I am sure you will return!
Chairs
Thanks to the Canungra Bowls Club for providing us with some chairs that will be utilised downstairs for any events, and to the School of Arts for also donating to us a large quantity of chairs which will enable us to hold bigger and better functions and events ... watch this space!!! Oh, and thanks again to Scott Dalby for aiding his dear Mother to lug the latter chairs!
Sportsperson Paver
We have previously acquired pavers on the Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Walkway for Life for ‘Moriarty Park’. This year we decided to honour the Sportsperson of the Year personally with a paver and so Murphy Baker as the 2016 winner is the first to receive this special award.
Dog Park
Once again thanks to Scenic Rim Regional Council for getting our much missed dog park up and functional again ... my babies are very happy to be able to have their wild play dates again! Great work guys!
