This Little Device Could Save a Life!
A joint initiative from several community groups has made a potentially life saving device available at Canungra FoodWorks. An Automated External Defibrillator (AED) is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses life threatning cardiac arrhythmias. The AED applies electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia and allows the heart to re establish an effective rhythm. Queensland Ambulance Service, Officer in Charge of Canungra Station, Jud Hart, said AED’s are simple to use with audio and visual commands once turned on, similar to a Navman. “AED’s are taught in many First Aid and First Responder and basic life support and CPR Courses,” said Jud. “AED’s are basic to use once turned on. In cardiac arrest, after three to five minutes irreversible brain damage may begin to occur. For every minute a person goes without being successfully treated by defibrillation the chance of survival decreases by 7% in the first three minutes and 10% per minute beyond three minutes. This is why defibrillation by an AED, administered by any community member can be a life saving act and is paramount. All clothing such as bras with metal underwire must be removed prior to defibrillation.” The defibrillator will be located inside Foodworks, mounted and clearly signed near the trolleys.
Members of the Local Ambulance Committee, Canungra Bowls Club, Canungra Lions Club and Canungra FoodWorks with the AED installed at FoodWorks
Once the AED is turned on it tells the user to connect the pads to the patient. It continues to guide the user through audio instructions. “I’d like to thank the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee, Canungra Bowls Club and the Lions Club of Canungra who kindly fundraised and donated funds to the Canungra Local Ambulance Committee which has made the purchasing of this AED possible,” said Jud.

“If you see the LAC members around town and have any questions please don’t be shy to ask.” Jud said in the event of any emergency situation and even if a member of the public is unsure if the issue is an emergency, do not hesitate to contact 000 immediately. 000 must be contacted prior to the use of the AED. An AED has also recently been placed at Canungra Swimming Pool.

The Canungra Times December 2015
A strong commitment to environmental sustainability saw Tamborine Village’s Beard and Brau Brewery take out the Environmental Sustainability Award at the Scenic Rim’s Business Excellence Awards for the second year running. Husband and wife team Tanya Harlow and Chris Herring (pictured, page 1) established Beard and Brau Farmhouse Brewery in South Australia in 2008 before relocating to Tamborine in 2011. The Brewery captures its own water and uses locally grown malts. The sustainable philosophy of ‘from the land returning to the land’ is integral to the brewery, with world leading water usage (less than 3 L water per 1 L of beer). Waste grain is provided as feed to local livestock and waste water is treated (without chemicals) at the farm and sprayed over the pasture for the four legged lawn mowers. Clouds on Beechmont took out the Customer Service award on the night. Wilson Gaythwaite, Christine Langford and their two sons began their journey into the world of hospitality and accommodation in 2003 when they fell in love with a dilapidated church on the Beechmont Plateau. After a painstaking year-long renovation they opened the doors of Old Saint John’s Church to guests. Such was the success of the old church that a few years later they purchased the property across the road and rebranded both venues as Clouds on Beechmont. Not content with offering just two styles of accommodation, the ground floor was remodelled a year later and Clouds Silver Lining apartment was launched. Deputy Mayor Virginia West said all businesses and individuals who took out an award should feel very proud of themselves. “Jasmin Skincare took out the Platinum Award this year, the most prestigious award representing the most outstanding entry from all winners,” said Virginia. “Well done to all finalists on what was another outstanding group of Scenic Rim Businesses, you should all be very proud of your accomplishments.” The Business Person of the Year was awarded to Jasmin Skincare’s owner Lihua Song. Ms Song was unable to attend on the night as she was overseas on business. Both awards were accepted on her behalf by Jasmin Skincare’s Chief Operations Officer Gordon Chalmers. Jasmin Skincare is a natural, certified organic skincare company, established in Brisbane in 2002, moving to Tamborine Mountain in 2005. They have since opened offices in Hong Kong, Japan, China, USA and Europe and achieved international recognition with four independent organic certifications for their range. Page 5

Apprentice of the Year - Bricklaying
Local Apprentice Bricklayer, Cameron Bodey has been named Gold Coast TAFE Apprentice of the Year for Bricklaying at their awards night held at Jupiter’s Casino on Wednesday 25th November. Apprenticed to Peter Teveluwe for most of his time, Cameron credits Peter for teaching him everything he knows. “I started with Pete and he was a Apprentice of the Year, Cameron Bodey hard boss but a very good bricklayer. He taught me well and I learned a lot from him,” said Cameron. Cameron then worked for a commercial bricklaying company in Brisbane which he said it was good experience, but not as good as working for Peter in terms of the learning opportunities available. During his apprenticeship, Cameron took part in the ‘Golden Trowel’ competition in Sydney and came second in the Weld Skills event on the Gold Coast, both of which he said were great opportunities to learn and meet people in the trade. Peter described Cameron as a top guy to have on the building site. “He has experience in other fields of building as well,” said Peter, “His bricklaying skills come from me. I got him through his TAFE school training, but later he wanted a change so we both agreed for him to work around a bit with other employers, and that freed me up to travel a bit.” Cameron finished his apprenticeship on 1st December and is working in earthmoving at present for a change but said he will probably go back to bricklaying.
Are You Storm Ready?
Storm season is here and there have already been several severe storms in surrounding areas, as well as local dogs lost after running from approaching storms. In the event of a severe storm, residents may be cut off by flooding, or debris cutting road access. Althought the SES, Energex and Council workers will do their best to minimise the time people are without power or access, during a major storm you could be isolated for several days. It is essential that residents have enough drinking water and food to last for at least three days - bearing in mind that power outages may affect water pumps and water sources. Even if you live just around the corner from a shopping centre, you may not be able to get there. And even if you could, the shops may be closed due to damage. Where a large number of people are affected, emergency services will be focused on assisting the most vulnerable in the community during an event. For more information about getting storm ready, visit the Council web site www.scenicrim. qld.gov.au or pick up a brochure from your local library.

Residents Urged to Contact Federal Member About Internet Access
Scott Buchholz, Federal Member for Wright, has asked residents with ongoing communications issues to contact his office for assistance. Many Canungra residents are currently struggling to access ADSL internet services as there are ‘no ports available’. Businesses have also been affected. Funky Dory Diner Owner Jamie Quetcher was told by Telstra she could face a six to nine month minimum wait time for ADSL access for the business. Illinbah resident Loretta Mineo has satellite internet at home, however she said the speed is at times so slow it can take up to five minutes to load one internet page. Loretta’s two children are studying at University and living at home but will have to move to Brisbane because the internet service was unsuitable for them to study at home. The cost of wireless or satellite is also greater than ADSL, with less bandwidth offered for the price, thereby putting residents who cannot access ADSL at an economic disadvantage. The Government reports that superfast broadband is coming to more than

38,000 homes and businesses in the Wright electorate under an accelerated three-year rollout of the NBN. “I understand internet access is important for our community, from business to education to healthcare. The release of the plan is a huge step forward for the NBN as the company works to speed up the rollout and make the build as cost efficient as possible,” said Scott.
According to the NBN rollout plan, approximately 1430 homes in Wright will be connected to the NBN in 2017, however this includes Canungra, Boyland, Wonglepong, Barney View South, Boyland, Cainbable, Canungra South, Lamington North, Mount Tamborine. It is not clear whether these will be existing or new homes. Scott Buchholz said he has over 1000 local residents come to his office with communication issues which they have endeavoured to address. “We have had plenty of success in resolving problems and in our collaboration with Telstra we have directed their attention to evident areas of concern where funded upgrades can be justified,” said Scott. Residents who have issues with their internet access or other communication issues are urged to contact Scott Buchholz’s office by email at Scott.Buchholz. MP@aph.gov.au or 5541 0150. The Canungra Times office is happy to assist with email access for this purpose. For more information about NBN rollout see www.nbnco.com.au/rolloutplan
E-Petition to Queensland Parliament There is an e-petition to pass new legislation in Queensland called “NO BODY - NO PAROLE” which when passed will make killers reveal the whereabouts of their victims before they are elligible for parole. If you could please follow the link, take a few minutes, sign it and share. The purpose of this petition is to help ensure that future families never have to go through the heartache of not being able to put their loved ones to rest. Subject: Eligibility: Sponsoring Member: Principal Petitioner:
No body no parole rule Queensland residents The Cerk of the Parliament Fiona Splitt, PO Box 966, COOKTOWN QLD 4895
Number of Signatures: Posting Date: Closing Date:
2743 as at 1 December 2015 13/10/2015 07/01/2016
Please use the following link to sign this petition on the internet: http://www.parliament.qld.gov.au/work-of-assembly/petitions/e-petition?PetNum=2473 TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that under the current law persons convicted of murder may receive parole even though they refuse to disclose the whereabouts of the victim’s body. This prevents the family of the victim from gaining any closure. There is a need to amend the Corrective Services Act 2006 to provide that persons convicted of murder and other offences cannot obtain parole without disclosing the location of the victim’s body. By making parole contingent upon the location of the body, it is hoped that this may give some closure to the victim’s family and provide incentive for prisoners to co-operate with police and other authorities. Your petitioners, therefore, request the House to amend Corrective Services Act 2006 to provide that an application for parole may not be processed where a prisoner has been sentenced for murder and no remains of the victim have been found. Under the rule, murderers who refuse to assist police with information regarding the remains of their victim will be denied parole. Page 8

Ladies’ Night In
The annual, ‘Ladies Night In’ fundraiser for Queensland Cancer Council was held in Wonglepong on Saturday 14th November. Around fifty ladies arrived in various shades of pink, and a great night was had by all. The highlight of the evening was a few songs sung by the brilliant 12 year old, Lucinda Curtis. She has appeared at Twin Towns and undoubtedly has a great future ahead. The quiz, bingo and raffle went down well and contributed to a fabulous $1400 raised for this worthy cause. Many thanks to all the ladies for their generous donations, and for entering into the spirit of the evening. The organisers would also like to thank businesses for their generous donations: Bean In?, Canungra Yoga, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, Canungra Beauty, the Canungra Craft Group, Smart Hair Robina, My Country Escape, Canungra Information Centre and Maureen Williams for her readings on the night. Treasure Chest of Books and Art Proves Popular
Over the past few months Book End Art & Intrigues has been quietly developing a following of locals and travellers who have taken a few steps off Christie Street to discover this weekend treasure chest of quality pre-loved books, beautiful art and collectibles. Set in the quaint rustic marketplace behind the Shoe Vault shoe shop, Book End is open every Saturday and Sunday until 2pm. The tranquil setting with pathway through to D J Smith Park provides the ideal spot to browse the hand-picked selection of Australian and international books, including beautiful children’s classics and collectibles. “People drop in from the local area, day trippers from Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and travellers from the other side of the world. We are getting great feedback”, said Jan McGregor, who started Book End earlier this year. “It’s a lovely way to connect with people and share a conversation,” Jan said. “In this digital age people are rediscovering the pleasure of a hard copy book, from a new release novel to a well read classic or a beautiful cooking or gardening book.” Book End also displays paintings by local artist Pam Timmers who was friends with Margaret Olley and in the same artists’ network.

Pam’s work has been influenced by her time living in China and France and has been shown in galleries from France to Australia. With a variety of intrigues including pottery and china collectibles, furniture, LP’s, Aboriginal artwork and more, this tiny shop is a delight to visit. The marketplace is home to a small group of shops including Treechange children’s clothes, toys and furniture, all lovingly handmade or “upcycled”, and

With another new shop opening soon the little marketplace is growing in popularity and variety, offering something different for the Christmas present shopping. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to find that perfect gift for that special someone in your life. Access and Inclusion
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Good Bye 2015! Well, at the end of 2014 my only New Year’s Resolution was to do less in 2015. I’m not 100% sure if I managed that or not - I seem to be busy no matter what. For 2016 I think I’ll stick with ‘to live for another year.’ Hasn’t failed me yet. The Bendigo Bank agency operating from my office is crazy busy. The Branch should open in the first half of 2016. Once that happens I’ll be plodding across the road to do my banking with everyone and else and skipping back to my newspaper office! My children insist I’ll just find something else to do, which I intend to - travel (with them)! The paper rolls out each month and I am very grateful to all the people who contribute articles, columns, rainfall, photos and information because without them there would be no paper. So thank you to Bren Dalby, Ray Hickson, Bronwyne Brown, Mel Whitby, Barry Day, Lindell Grimshaw, David Baker, Kim Sami, Wendy Brown, Liz Bobermein, Craig Roberts, Diane Ayscough, Virginia West, Fiona Williams, Ange Maddaford, Peter Rice, and Irene White. Also to Sharleen Mills and Alesia Clark McCabe who have been helping with distribution. Of course the paper could not exist without the support of the local businesses who advertise. I know it benefits our community when we have a strong vehicle for news in our area and I am very grateful for the support. I’d like to thank local papers for sharing artwork, articles and photos - Tamborine Times, Tamborine Mountain News and Gold Coast Hinterlander. It is great to have the independents supporting each other! My dear friend Julie Walker helped whenever the call went out. My children, Heather and Sophie get dragged around to events and asked to proofread the paper, but never complain (well, rarely)! I’m so grateful to my parnter, Ben Kenny who is not only a great support to me and has seen me through some challenging times this year, but also eased the workload by coming into the office to help out. And of course, the readers who pick up the paper each month - there would be no point without you! Thank you everyone, have a safe and happy Christams and I look forward to seeing you all in the New Year! Page 14
Dear Keer, Once again nothing surprises me when it comes to the Scenic Rim Council this time it involves Canungra. Have you seen the new garden installed under the Town Beautification Program? It looks like it belongs to the home behind it. Council has courteously even supplied pavers to the homeowner’s gate. If I didn’t think this was so absurd I’d be laughing. I find this absolutely disgusting there are people in this community that don’t have safe access to town but yet we have an ugly sandstone garden which does nothing to enhance the character of our town and benefits one ratepayer. Maybe incorporating a footpath would have been more beneficial. Have you heard of Human Rights and the QLD Disability Act do you understand what Access and Inclusion means? Most Council’s are incorporating Access and Inclusion into their town planning. Don’t you think people with disabilities have a life and want to live it like everyone else? The footpath from the corner of Christie and Kidston Streets to the Pie Shop - Canungra residents have been requesting that it be redesigned for ten years!!! Council has known how unsafe it is that whole time. If you have a wheelchair, walker or scooter you can’t access it without tipping over and seriously injuring yourself. I was told that this footpath will be repaired after the holidays but that remains to be seen. The only way people with mobility aids to access the doctor is to go on the road and they are stuck between parked vehicles and vehicles coming down the hill. There are two young adults that I have the pleasure of knowing, my son Scott and a young girl named Maddie, they are both 18 have scooters and want to be independent. Maddie has already come off second best, after moving out of the way of a car on Lawton Lane she tipped over in the gutter breaking the arm of her scooter. Really is that the best you can do? I was under the impression that Councils and Main Roads have a working relationship. Cheryl Kingsman
Response from Council
Editor’s Note: I contacted Council regarding Cheryl’s letter as it raises several issues of interest to the community. It is also the policy of this paper to give Council the opportunity to respond to any pertinent correspondence. This is in the interest of mediating a result, rather than adding fuel to the fire. Cr Virginia West said Council undertook beautification works on Christie Street beside the Arts Hall to enhance the entry statement to the town. It should be noted that the gate on the property adjoining Pine Street has been there for some time, and it would be remiss of Council to landscape without regard for the owners’ existing access to the property. “A component of this required ground levelling for landscaping purposes. As such, an existing entry stairway to a residential property at the rear of the landscaping area was removed,” said Virginia. “Council placed pavers through the landscaped gardens to provide appropriate replacement access through the landscaped area and avoid damage to the new gardens.” “The issue relating to the need for a disability-friendly footpath from the Pie Shop on Christie Street to the doctor’s surgery has been previously addressed with the resident in question.” “Funding has been allocated for the renewal of this stretch of the footpath, to the value of $54,000 with construction intended to commence from April 2016,” she said. Virginia undertook a ‘walk around’ Canungra with Maddie and her mother on Thursday 26th November (this was arranged prior to the receipt of this letter) to identify and discuss other issues for disabled people in the town.

The Magic Suitcase Comes to Canungra
Specialising in both magic and mentalism, Gold Coast Magician, Fabrice, can create a mood for any occasion using unique tactics to enchant his audiences. Canungra residents will be treated to a one night only show at the Canungra School of Arts Hall on Monday 28th Decmeber at 7pm. Coming from a long line of magicians, with his father an amateur magician, and his grandfather an amateur hypnotist, it’s safe to say magic runs in his veins. His original material in his performance is sure to wow any audience from young to old. Fabrice has re-invented the 16th century art form from France originally known as “Le Chapeau De Tabarin”, where a piece of material is used to transform the performer into different characters. The modern title for this entertainment is “Chapeaugraphy”. Only a few chapeaugraphers exist today and Fabrice is proud to be among that number. Tickets for The Magic Suitcase are $15 and are available from www. fabrice.com.au/gigs. From each ticket sale, $5 will be donated to Aussie Helpers, a charity which assists Australian farmers. The Canungra Times has two tickets to give away to readers - to win email news@canungratimes.com.au and tell us why you would like to see The Magic Suitcase.

The Canungra Times December 2015
This month has seen further changes at Canungra Police Station. Senior Constable Ben Sawden has just completed the Police Dog Handler course and will be leaving us for Mackay. We wish Ben, his family and new dog, Chief, all the best up north. We have also seen the arrival of Senior Constable Andy Williams who has taken up a posting with us after spending a majority of his career working in and around Surfers Paradise. Andy is relishing the change of pace and is keen to become part of the greater Canungra community. School is nearly finished for another year. The holiday periods, particularly during the warmer months, can lead to idle minds getting up to mischief including causing damage to, or stealing from, schools. On the weekend of 13th-15th November there was an attempted break-in at the canteen of the Beechmont Primary School. The offenders damaged a roller door and left empty alcohol containers behind. Unfortunately it looks like they haven’t been fingerprinted yet and we haven’t been able to identify those involved, although that may only be a matter of time. If you know anything about this attempted break in, or see anyone on school grounds over the holiday period, either at Canungra or Beechmont, please give us a call. There has been an increase in the number of drink drivers detected over the last month. We are well and truly in party season but that is not an excuse to get behind the wheel of a vehicle after having a few too many. The Hotel and RSL both have courtesy buses and if that is not an option look at having a designated (sober) driver or walk home. It’s not worth the risk of being picked up for drink driving, or not making it home at all. There will be a number of traffic operations conducted over the school holidays. Don’t be the driver caught out. Focus will be on the Fatal 5 – Speed, Impaired (Drink/Drug) Driving, Seatbelts, Distraction (mobile phones/ texting) and Fatigue. There will also be continued focus on motorcyclists, some of whom have no regard for themselves or anyone else on the road I’m not sure why some riders think 196km/h is an ok speed on any roads. Please remember, if you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please come and see us or contact the station on one of the below numbers: Canungra Police 55435120, Police Link on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Have a happy and safe Christmas from all the staff at Canungra Police Station. Page 15
Phone Book Delivery Cancelled
State Opposition Leader Lawrence Springborg has called on phone book distributor Sensis to reconsider its move to cancel automatic delivery to Queensland households. Mr Springborg said many households, especially in rural parts of Queensland, rely on the books for accurate contact information. “Many Queenslanders believe there is still a place for the printed phone books and that they are critical in rural and remote communities,” Mr Springborg said. “There are still many parts of Queensland with poor internet coverage, so to be expected to rely on an app or search engine just won’t work. “The bottom line is the White and Yellow Pages are easier and more accurate to read but rural and regional Queenslanders now miss out on the most reliable source of contact information available to them.” Mr Springborg said he was also concerned local charities, who received funds for distributing the phone books, would miss out. “Local Scouts, Rotary and Lions Clubs will now have to make up for the much-needed funds they will lose through Sensis’s cancellation of deliveries,” he said. “I call on Sensis to reconsider its position so rural and regional Queenslanders still have reliable access to this information. “Sensis should at the very least have informed Queenslanders of these changes.” Queenslanders wishing to order a phone book, free of charge, could do so by phoning Sensis on 1800 810 211.
Nikki Dudly, Tamil Mani and Shane O’Reilly at the Queensland Tourism Awards
O’Reilly’s Trumps at Queensland Tourism Awards
O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat was recognised at the Queensland Tourism Awards on Friday 13th November, 2015. The family owned and operated Rainforest Retreat and Canungra Valley Vineyards accepted gold, silver and bronze at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre attended by over 900 distinguished guests including Minister for Education and Minister for Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games the Honourable Kate Jones. The 48 architecturally designed Villas received the top gong as the best self-contained accommodation in Queensland. The strata titled development, once utilised as a dairy farm in 1911 by Herb O’Reilly, accepted the prestigious gold award. Retreat Operations Manager Brendan Long spoke on behalf of his team and thanked Managing Director Shane O’Reilly for his mentorship. Shane O’Reilly said, “We look forward to our winning Villa application now progressing to the anticipated Australian Tourism Awards in Melbourne on 5th February, 2016.” Second place was also awarded to the Retreat and Lost World Conference Centre for the best Business Event Venue – playing host to hundreds of corporate conferences, meetings, incentives and retreats. Third place resulting in a bronze accolade was awarded to General Manager Tamil Mani and his team at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards. “The awards and recognition come at an opportune time with preparations underway next year to celebrate 90 years since opening our guest house doors in 1926,” said Shane.

Tamborine Mountain College - High Hopes
It’s been a year of High Hopes for Tamborine Mountain College! “The hopes and aspirations of TMC students are in all of our hands”, said Mrs Melbourne – TMC teachers and parents alike, working together to bring out every TMC student’s absolute best. 2015 is the College’s first year as a complete campus Prep – Yr 12. Constant wet weather, including a cyclone at the start of the year, delayed the 20 Year Anniversary celebrations, but they maintained high hopes and the celebration was a huge success later in the year. Delayed building works impacted on the College but still they had high hopes. It was high hopes, Valour – that united the College – yes the entire campus came together to face these difficulties. Students, teachers, staff and parents – together they achieved Victory: Prep – Yr 12! It was a fitting achievement to have occurred this year – 20th Anniversary. High hopes created the College back in 1995 and high hopes created a complete campus in 2015. Andy Sawden was the important guest speaker as a Foundation Student from 1995. This year: • Yr 12 success educationally is highlighted by guaranteed entries into university before OPs even come out – 15 offers to students were made from Griffith, Southern Cross, Bond and New England universities. • Debating Teams and Public Speakers competed successfully. • Sporting achievements have again been many. As part of the Independent Sporting Association for the major carnivals of swimming, cross-country and athletics, several students went onto Regional representation.
Tamborine Mountain College students at Speech Night
• The Arts Night for seniors and juniors displayed a quality of work that would rival any main event or exhibition, anywhere in the world. • The HIA (Hinterland Independent Alliance) with Hills and Kooralbyn Schools continues to grow with the addition of Primary. • Drama Excellence presented “Cluedo”. Written and performed by this group and presented in a theatre restaurant setting. • Leo Club has been busy raising funds and serving the community. • House Captains were directly involved in sport with the Primary. • Sports Excellence achieved Certificate III in Fitness for several students. • First Graduating Yr 6 class – a wonderful dinner planned next week. • Graduating Yr 12 class – the Formal at Versace.
• One of the greatest highlights for Mrs Melbourne personally was ANZAC Day – commemorating100 years this year and seeing an entire college - little ones from Prep holding hands with older senior students - march to show respect. 2016 Yr 12 Leaders were announced: • Captains – Charlotte Stubbs, Harry Simington • Prefects – Eden Knight, Lachlan Bartlett, Jack Arbuckle • House Captains – Rebecca Emmonds (Nicholls), Ashleigh Cooper (Kyle), Riley Davis (Walton). College Chairman, Mr Michael Kyle, Board Members, teachers, staff and parents were thanked for their time and efforts this year. Without their vision and confidence, the College would not have achieved great things from high hopes.

Green Team News
By Fiona Williams, greenteamcss@gmail.com
I can’t quite believe I am writing the last Green Team News for 2015! Wow has this year flown! I would like to say a big thanks to all our volunteers for keeping our wonderful team going for another year. Without the dedication from our Green Team kids, parents and Green Team members our wonderful achievements for the year would not be possible! Another big thanks needs to go to the Teachers and staff of Canungra State School who are always behind us 100% and help us to achieve and support all our ventures. A special thanks needs to go to our school Groundsman Trevor who spends much of his own time helping us at working bees and other events. It is with much sadness that we say goodbye to our Year 6 Green Team Leaders this year. Charlie and Mia have been wonderful advocates of our team and also fantastic role models for our younger leaders. We wish them all the best at High School and hope they’ll come back to visit from time to time. Thanks again for all the community support we have and we hope to see you all again next year for more Great Green Team Fun!

Tips for a Healthier Xmas
If you’re worried about the effects Christmas over-indulgence might have on your waistline - you may like to try a couple of these ideas to stay fit and healthy. Plan your treats. To prevent over-indulgence you can make yourself a cheat sheet - a personal reminder of how many treats you’re going to allow yourself every week and what you’ll do to earn them. So the more treats you want to have the more exercise you’re going to need to plan into your week! Don’t starve yourself before a party or Xmas lunch, or you’ll eat like a starved wolf. A few small healthy meals during the day is best. Book a few activity days or adventures in the local area. Put on your explorer hat and stay active - if you’re having fun it won’t feel like a workout. Cycle for miles, get lost in the wilderness or try a sport or activity you’ve never done before. How about a day up Mount Warning to challenge your body both physically and mentally? Go crazy with vegetables. Pack in the veggies (especially green leafy ones) as they’re super nutritious and filling, leaving less space for the naughty stuff. Eat mindfully - take time to eat slowly instead of shoveling it in. Thoroughly chew and enjoy each bite until you’re 80% full, not 120% full! Go light on the alcohol. Seriously? Yep, each glass of wine packs around 150 calories. Stop making excuses! They are the death of many fitness programs, especially with the craziness of Xmas. Bottom line - just do it! It only takes 30 mins. Dance around the living room. Take time out to let your hair down and relieve the stress of Christmas shopping and family gatherings - it’s great exercise, and releases loads of feel-good endorphins in your body. Who cares if anyone’s watching? And lastly give LOVE. It’s the best gift to give yourself and others. Have a great Xmas everyone!

Free Breast Screening at North Tamborine
BreastScreen Queensland is set to return to Tamborine Mountain in the new year to provide free breast cancer screening. The free mobile service will be available at the Vonda Youngman Community Centre, North Tamborine, for three weeks from 4th January. BreastScreen Queensland Gold Coast Service Director, Dr Ellen Dooris, invites eligible women, particularly those aged between 50 and 74, to book this important life-saving health check. Women are eligible to attend this free service from the age of 40. A doctor’s referral is not required. Earlier this year, 328 women took advantage of this free service which visited Tamborine Mountain. Most of these ladies received the good news that there were no signs of breast cancer present at the time of screening. “A breastscreen, or screening mammogram, is an X-ray that can detect small changes in the breast tissue before they can be felt or noticed. For women over 50, a breastscreen is the best way to detect most breast cancers in the very early stages, giving women a better chance of successful treatment and survival,” Dr Dooris said. “It is still important for all women to be breast aware and remain vigilant, even if they have regular breastscreens, and to see their doctor if they notice any new or unusual changes,” Dr Dooris said. BreastScreen Queensland is screening at Beaudesert Hospital until mid December, before the mobile unit heads to North Tamborine for 2016. It will then visit Nerang from the end of January. Services are also permanently located at Helensvale, Southport and West Burleigh. Eligible women can book an appointment at their preferred location by phoning 13 20 50.

He is a real sweetie and loves pats. He has lots of energy to share with his new family and would love to get out everyday for a sniff around the block. He will make a wonderful inside companion! Dusty is seven years old, he is $250 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed.
Hello, is it me you’re looking for? Puddy is a very sweet girl with lots of love to give. She was surrendered to our shelter through no fault of her own and is looking for just one thing - a forever family. She is cuddly and sociable, she is quiet initially but once she gets to know you she LOVES to smooch all over you and sus out what you are doing. She is extremely gentle and would do well in a home with children or other animals, as long as she is introduced properly and given time to settle in. If you’re looking for a new furry family member and are wanting to give an adult cat a chance then come down and meet Puddy today! You won’t be disappointed! Penny is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. To meet Dusty, Puddy or the other animals, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:
Shelter Road, Coombabah Ph: 5509 9000 www.awlqld.com.au Merry Christmas!
In October, I travelled to North Queensland to re-visit some areas that I had seen incredible wildlife many years before but at the time had no chance to capture these creatures on film. As everyone knows, I am a devoted bird lover but I also have a deep love of Australia’s native mammals. One mammal that I had encountered in North Queensland that I never forgot was the Mareeba Rock-wallaby. Rockwallabies are a distinct group of macropods, which have adapted to living in rocky environments. Australia is home to sixteen species of Rock-wallabies The Mareeba Rock-wallaby lives within a small range in North Queensland that includes Mt Carbine, Mt Garnet and the Undara Lava Tubes. Throughout this range, the Mareeba Rock-wallaby appears to be common. This species is highly variable with respect to fur colour and this is usually dependent on the particular environs where the animals are residing. Similar Rock-wallaby species to the Mareeba Rock-wallaby include the Unadorned Rock-wallaby and Allied Rockwallaby. As mentioned, Mareeba Rock-wallabies live in rocky areas surrounded by open forest. This particular species lives communally and is usually active in the early morning and late afternoon. During the heat of the day, Mareeba Rockwallabies take shelter in the shade of their rocky environs. The best location to observe the Mareeba Rock-wallabies at close quarters is at Granite Gorge near Mareeba. This population of Rock-wallabies has become habituated to humans due to being fed. To be so close to such a beautiful animal was a privilege, however, I did refrain from feeding them. For anyone wishing to view the Mareeba Rock-wallaby in other areas with relative ease, I would suggest visiting the Undara Lava Tubes. Although my time was short with the Mareeba Rock-wallabies, I was able to finally take the photos that I had always dreamed about. These incredible animals are a remainder of how unique Australian wildlife is and how we must do everything to ensure that their future is protected for the next generation of wildlife photographers to marvel at! FINALLY, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Stay safe and treasure every moment Mareeba Rock-wallaby with friends and family…

News from St Luke’s
By Di Ayscough
It is almost Christmas and this means a time to celebrate the birth of Christ and the chance for us to share special times with family and friends. It does not have to be a time of over spending or using our credit cards to purchase beyond our means. That is not what Christmas is about and maybe now is a good time to stop and think what Christmas really is. For some people Christmas will bring added loneliness and stress, for others it will mean eating and drinking too much. The question we should ask is “what does it mean to you?” How can we help show what Christmas really means.? Why not remember the special words of Love, Hope, Faith and Joy. Help to make someone happy, have faith to know God is real, celebrate with joy the birth of Jesus and demonstrate your love, not just through words but through actions. Give people hope. St Luke’s will hold our Christmas street stall outside The Butchery on Saturday 12th December commencing at 8am so be early to purchase your special treats and buy some raffle tickets. Saturday 19th December we will gather in the Church for a delicious lunch and time of celebration. We will welcome any visitors for our Christmas service, to be held at our normal time of 7.45am on Christmas Day. We farewelled Mary from New Zealand Air Force last week. Mary was returning home after seven months in Australia and she will be sadly missed by the congregation. May you all celebrate Christmas in a special way, remembering the true meaning with love for all.
Merry Christmas!

Solution page 36
This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Sport Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
Sportsperson of the Month - December
The Sportsperson of the Month for December is Trad Sutherland. Trad, a Year 6 student at Canungra State school, is an all round sportsman who has achieved the following results over the past two years: 2014: • Cross country - 11yrs boys champion, 4th Gold Coast North districts and 24th at South Coast regionals. • Athletics - 11yrs boys champion, competed in 200m and discus at Gold Coast North districts. • Swimming - 11yrs boys champion. • Played for Canungra Owls Soccer Under 12’s grand final winners (played up a year level). 2015: • Cross country - 12 yrs boys champion, competed at districts. • Athletics - 12yrs boy champion, Canungra district age champion, competed in 100m, 200m (3rd) and 800m (2nd) at Gold Coast North districts, competed in 200m and 800m at South Coast regionals. • Played for Canungra Owls Soccer Under 12’s, made semi finals. • Trad is also the captain of Canungra State School’s rugby league team who have had a good season this year.
2014, Pheobi went on to be selected to attend the 2015 West Ham United International Elite Girls Academy in London in April this year. In January this year Phoebi trialled for Palm Beach Sharks Under 15 Girls National Premier League Team and was asked shortly after to join them. Her training and playing schedule was naturally jam packed but still Phoebi was keen to do more - this is where Canungra Owls met Phoebi! We were lacking, at the outset of the season, a coach for our Under 15 mixed team and Phoebi offered her services and expertise. This was a tremendously gutsy offer, to coach a team of youth the same age as herself, and we were all superbly impressed with the way she dealt with the training and challenges. It turned out that we were able to ask Phoebi to coach our Under 7’s instead as that would fit better with the demands of her own game and she relished this task too. A very versatile and confident young lady who gets on with the task in hand and is a superb achiever in all that she does. This, whilst an extraordinary list of achievements is only a smattering of all that Phoebi has had success with and I look forward to hearing of her continuing successes. Good luck Pheobi! As the Sportsperson of the Month, Trad and Pheobi will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks.
Sportsperson of the Month - March
The Sportsperson of the Month for March is Phoebi Clissold. Phoebe is an incredible athlete having last year performed through to the highest level in State (NSW) in Cross Country, 800m, 1500m and 3000m as well as being on the Representative State team (open girls) for Touch Footy, before relocating to our area in January this year. Soccer, however is Phoebi’s real passion and she excels in that arena also! Having been invited to attend the West Ham United Oceania Elite Academy on the Gold Coast in September Merry Christmas!
