Tourism Awards Recognise Local Achievements

The prestigious Queensland Tourism Awards recently recognised the achievements of local freelance Public Relations Manager Nikki Dudley from Nikki Dudley Freelancing when she was awarded the Young Achievers Award for 2016. This award, won by Bindi Irwin in 2015, recognises an individual, less than 32 years of age, working in the tourism industry and their contribution to the development of a vibrant and professional tourism industry. Nikki’s work includes promotion for O’Reillly’s Rainforest Retreat and O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards, also recognised at the Awards. O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards were awarded Silver in the Tourism Wineries, Distilleries and Breweries category and Bronze in the Tourism Restaurants and Catering Services category. O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat was awarded silver in the Self-Contined Accommodation category. This year, the Queensland Tourism Awards attracted approximately 160 entries from across the state. A total of 72 awards, including 24 Gold, 23 Silver, 20 Bronze and 5 individual awards, were presented at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre on 11th November where 900 guests gathered to celebrate Queensland’s tourism achievements. Tourism operators in the Gold Coast region collected a total of 12 awards. QTIC Chief Executive Daniel Gschwind said the 32nd Queensland Tourism Awards had attracted an outstanding array of tourism operators.

Paula Sproul, Sam Dusting, Tamil Mani and Ali Dougherty of O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards

“I applaud the winners of our 28 business, event and individual categories. These dedicated operators and their staff have shown the true spirit of our vibrant tourism industry,” he said. “Queensland’s tourism industry has emerged as a powerhouse of the state’s economy, contributing $22.8 billion in local expenditure and employing more than 233,000 Queenslanders, with enormous opportunities ahead for our regions and destinations. “Tonight’s winners are industry champions with the passion and innovative drive

that makes our industry what it is today. With that kind of commitment our tourism industry will continue to go from strength to strength.” The Queensland Tourism Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts who volunteer their time to assess written submissions and travel throughout Queensland to experience the amenities and services of nominated businesses. Queensland’s Gold Award winners will gain automatic entry into the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, which will be held in Darwin on 24th February 2017.

Moving

Address

Tom Sharp gave a moving address at the Remembrance Day Memorial Service in D Smith Park, honouring his Grandfather, Jim and Great Uncle Tom Sharp, both of whom fought in World War I. Jim joined up on 13th August 1915, along with his cousin George Rankin and mate John Veivers. They were shipped out soon after. Arriving in Egypt Jim was re-united with close mate Jack Bartle and the four; all members of C Company 9th Battallion, sailed from Alexandria and landed in Marseilles on 3rd April 1916. While billeted behind the front line at Rouge de Boot, C Company came under enemy bombardment killing 24 and injuring another 48 the first Australian casualties of the Western theatre. Jim was among those injured. His survival was due entirely to the courage and bravery of Jack Bartle who moved Jim to a dressing station. He was conscious but had a large lump of shell sticking to his head. He was evacuated to a hospital in London where a steel plate was inserted into the left side of his skull, which he carried for the remainder of his life. The damage to

his left ear drum was beyond repair and he remained partially deaf. He returned to Australia on 24th June 1916, was classified totally and permanently incapacitated and was discharged on 20th Sept 1916.

Day

Younger brother Tom enlisted 12 months after his brother and was a member of the 7th Machine Gun Company; 2nd Machine Gun Battalion, as was friend and neighbour Hector Cowling. On 20th April 1918 near the town of Villers Brettoneux, Tom Sharp crossed in to no man’s land to retrieve an injured comrade. In doing so Tom was cut down by enemy fire and in turn was himself saved by a fellow digger. He was then evacced by the 6th field ambulance to the 20th Casualty Clearing Station based at Vignacourt. Tom died on the 21st April 1918 exactly two years to the day from when his brother Jim was permanently disabled from the war. Tom paid the ultimate sacrifice and along with his best mate and cousin, Stanley McDonald Garrick, they were both laid to rest in Vignacourt Cemetery, France. Jim Sharp, Jack Bartle, Hector Cowling, George Rankin and John Veivers survived that war and returning to this district where they picked up their lives and made lasting contributions to the community. With thanks to Tom Sharp for allowing The Canungra Times to reproduce his Remembrance Day address.

Thieves broke into three businesses in Canungra on the night of Monday 28th November, with damage caused but little of value stolen. The young male offenders were caught on security cameras as they moved from Canungra Hardware, where they stole tools to break into the Canungra Bowls Club and later the Canungra Hotel. A door and window at the Bowls Club were broken to gain access, however the laptop computer and cash they stole were later discarded. New owners of Canungra Hardware, David and Rebecca Torrens, only took over the business the day before the break in. Rebecca said they expect to recover the tools that were stolen. The thieves were disturbed when the alam went off at the Canungra Hotel. They left several stolen articles in DJ Smith Park. Sergeant Craig Roberts said Canungra Police have been making inquiries in relation to these offences. “The three young males seen on CCTV footage obtained from local businesses are yet to be positively identified,” he said. “Fortunately the money stolen from the Bowls Club, which was from the Christmas raffle and Swear Jar, has been recovered after being found by a young local lady out for her morning walk. We are still looking for information from any members of the community who may be able to assist further with descriptions of people or vehicles in the area between 11.00pm and 1.30am”. If anyone has information please contact Canungra Police on 5543 5120 or Crimestoppers on 1800 333 000.

Save Our Sanity - Supporting Parents Three very special women have united to address the need for support for parents of children with special needs on the Gold Coast. Adreena Hunt, Karen Fitness and Judy Green recently started ‘Save Our Sanity’ a coffee group where parents can chat and find out about services available for their families. Canungra resident, Adreena, and her husband Bevan came over to live in Australia eight years ago from New Zealand with their two children, Ethan and Kaia. Adreena is very passionate about kids with ADHD and Aspergers Syndrome (now all grouped under the covering of Autism Spectrum Disorder). Her son Ethan showed signs as a baby that he was a little different from other babies. Adreena says over the years their journey has been one of education, understanding, frustration, perseverance and a lot of character building! “I hope this group will help other parents or carers who have a loved one dealing with mental heath issues,” said Adreena, “It can be very isolating and lonely at times, and you need support and someone with a listening ear to tell you are doing a good job, keep going.”

Adreena Hunt, Karen Fitness and Judy Green of Save Our Sanity Gold Coast

Both Karen and Judy have children with physical and mental special needs. Karen’s son has type 1 diabetes and her daughter has been labelled as ‘intellectually impaired’ and having a ‘global developmental delay’. Judy’s daughter Candice was born with a chromosomal imbalance and wasn’t supposed to survive in the womb. She was on oxygen for four and a half years, is intellectually and physically impaired, has scoliosis, low muscle tone and is described by Judy and her husband as ‘such a joy’ and a real character.

Although the needs of their children are very different, the three women say having each other to lean on was a great support. Finding services to help their children was one of the major difficulties they faced. “A lot of these services don’t talk to each other, so finding other parents who can tell you what services can be accessed is a huge help,” said Adreena. “We saw many reports in the media of parents resorting to suicide and this breaks our hearts, it’s terribly sad. It shows there is a need for people to reach out to one another and this is what Karen, Judy and myself want to endeavor to do,” she said. “There needs to be somewhere where you can be real with people.” Save our Sanity Gold Coast is free of charge for parents of special needs children. They meet for coffee on Saturday afternoons once a month at Southlands Christian Centre, Gaven Arterial Road. Adreena, Judy and Karen would also be interested to hear from medical professionals and people working in special needs fields who would be interested in giving talks or advice at the coffee afternoons. For more information like the Save Our Sanity Gold Coast facebook page or email sossouthland@gmail.com.

Girls Night In

The annual Wonglepong ‘Girls Night In’, which raises funds for Cancer Council Queensland, was held on Saturday 5th November. Over 55 ladies attended and a great time was had by all. This event has been held for several years and a total of $2,150 was raised this year. Lucinda Curtis supported the event for the second year running and sang beautifully; she is undoubtedly a star of the future. A raffle was held throughout the evening with impressive prizes, and a game of bingo went down well too. Organisers would like to sincerely thank all of those businesses that generously provided prizes in support of the event. Most of all though, thanks to all the ladies who turned up with plates of food and entered into the spirit of the evening. The night would not have been the huge success it was without your generosity and enthusiasm.

Japanese Kitchen in the Country

Walking into Ginja Ninja Sushi Cafe you could be forgiven for thinking you were walking into a trendy Melbourne hipster cafe. Josh Kennedy and Danielle moved to Canungra 12 months ago with a view to establishing a small business in the town and Ginja Ninja is a reflection of their dedication to healthy, tasty food and great design. The menu is a blend of popular sushi rolls which can be conveniently purchased from the cold display or made to order; healthy and delicious Japanese meals consisting of meat, vegetables, rice and salads; and innovative Japanese style desserts. Everything is freshly made on the premises by Josh and his Chefs Nobu Shibusawa and Dylan Davis. Josh says most of their food is MSG free and many dishes are also dairy and gluten free. Recently they have been delivering order to Canungra State School tuckshop which has been a popular choice for students and a welcome addition to the tuckshop menu! Ginja Ninja also have fresh juices made and bottled daily so you can quickly grab one to take away. Their coffee blend is exclusive to Ginja Ninja, with a mild roast kraft bean they they have been told by some customers is the best in town. Danielle says they are fortunate to have found experienced Japanese Chef, Nobu, and local Chef Dylan who, along with Josh and Danielle have become a close knit team who enjoy working together. The relaxed, welcoming vibe in Ginja Ninja certainly reflects this, making it a great place to go for a meal or snack. Ginja Ninja is open six days per week (closed on Wednesdays) for coffee and lunches and open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.

Thank You

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Time for some well overdue thanks! The last couple of years have been busy. Too busy. Busier than I am comfortable with and busier than I ever want to be again. Without the support of some key people, things would have fallen apart. So to the people who have kept things going, thank you: • The people who send in their columns every month - this benefits the community organisations you write for as well as the paper but you do it out of the goodness of your heart and for that I am very grateful. The Canungra Times could not be the voice of our community without your input. • Julie and Natasha who worked in the bank agency during the last two and a half years. • Everyone who took up the slack with the Show Society when it got a bit much! Especially Vanessa, Airlie, Michelle, Darrel, Shona and John. • All the businesses who advertise. Without you, the paper would not exist, and the people who support these businesses by ‘buying local’. • Sharleen, Ingrid, and Ben who help with Canungra Times deliveries and Mark and David who help with photos when needed - thank you! • My family and friends - Ben, Heather, Sophie, Ingrid, Tracey, Tracee, Julie and Becky - thank you for putting up with me being very vague! And finally, Beau - the new Canungra Times dog. It hasn’t been the same since Humphrey passed away. Beau is great company and his infectious smile means even people passing by stop to give him a pat!

Dear Editor, We hosted our very first “Vintage and Country Fayre” in your lovely country town. We just wanted to say thanks so much for having us and hopefully the cafes and shops benefited for having more visitors in town. We have plans to do it all again next year. Once again many thanks to the Town with a Big Heart for your valued support. Regards Pam Glucina

Life Savers

I sincerely wish to praise and thank the folks at the Canungra Ambulance - Neil, Carmen, Dave, Nick and Mark. Between them they saved my life twice this year - be reassured of their professionalism and expertise. Words are not enough to express my thanks on behalf of three generations of my family and myself. Thank you all lots and lots. In appreciation and heartfelt thanks. Jennie Mac

Volunteer Grants Open

Moving Forward at The Canungra Motel Canungra Motel is under new management with Grant and Fiona Forward taking up the lease on the motel in August 2016. Ideally located on the corner of Christie Street and Lamington National Park Road, Canungra Motel is one of the landmark builidngs in Canungra. With reasonable rates and a great location, it is ideal for housing visiting family and friends over the Christmas and New Year period. Grant and Fiona are living on site, making checking in easier and more convenient for guests. They have installed a new barbecue which gives guests the benefit of on-site cooking and dining. During the summer months the motel pool will be a welcome benefit and of course all rooms are air-conditioned and have ensuites. For enquiries and more information contact Fiona on 5543 5155.

Grants of up to $5000 are up for grabs to help community organisations from across the region support their volunteers. The funding is being provided under a $10 million Volunteer Grant funding round, which is open until 20th December. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz urged local groups to apply. “This is a great opportunity for community organisations in our region to apply for a grant of between $1000 and $5000 to support the important work of their volunteers,” he said. “It is well worth applying, because in the last round we gave a total of $98,856 to 27 groups in the Scenic Rim and Gold Coast Hinterland alone. “That money is already being put to good use, with groups putting it towards things like computer gear, training, fuel costs, first aid and storage.” Mr Buchholz said groups could also use the grants to help cover costs like background security checks or transport for volunteers who might have a disability. This funding is part of the Commonwealth Government’s $28 million over 2016-17 for the Strengthening Communities program. Regional and Indigenous organisations are particularly encouraged to apply. Tamborine Village Carols

Riding for Men’s Health

The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride was founded in Sydney by Mark Hawwa. It was inspired by a photo of Mad Men’s Don Draper astride a classic bike and wearing his finest suit. Mark decided a themed ride would be a great way to combat the often-negative stereotype of men on motorcycles, whilst connecting niche motorcycle communities together. It is a niche specific event for Cafe Racers, Bobbers and Classics. That first ride in 2012 brought together over 2,500 riders across 64 cities and is now a worldwide event held on 25th September every year. The success of the event encouraged the founder to consider how it could be used to support a worthy cause. Influenced by the tragedy of losing one of the ride hosts to depression, 2016 saw a change in the organiser’s health goals. Now, the funding of suicide prevention programs is a DGR focus, in addition to prostate cancer research through our new official charity partner The Movember Foundation. This year there were 57,905 registered riders, who raised $3,669,647 in over 500 cities across 90 countries, making it the largest charity ride in the world. Local rider, Craig Townsend, completed the ride with his team ‘The Back Creek Bikers’. The team placed 21st in the world and first on the Gold Coast ride for fundraising. Craig said they had 14 team members, including three female riders, who raised $9,583.00. “The top three Gold Coast fundraisers were members from our team,” said Craig. In Australia, funding from the ride goes to prostate cancer research and suicide prevention. Prostate is the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in men (after skin cancer). Suicide is the biggest killer in men aged 20-39 years. Globally, 510,000 per year die from suicide. DGR aims to curb these statistics. For more information visit gentlemansride. com.

Community Garden Growing

Canungra Village Garden Project team kept the ball rolling during November with lots of activity. The team built the water tank stand, and installed the first of a series of water tanks, thanks to a grant from the Scenic Rim Regional Council. The team is now raising funds for a shed to store tools and equipment. This has been kicked off by a generous donation of $1,000 from Canungra Services Club. Presenting the cheque to Alexandra Griffiths, Nerang Memorial Services Club Chairman Terry McDonald said they are proud to support such a great community initiative. The Project hosted its first free workshop, “Worm Farms and Composting”, followed by a delicious sausage sizzle at the Canungra Valley Markets, and we finished off with another workshop on building with pallets. The Project team would like to thank SRRC and Canungra Services Club for their financial assistance; Canungra Foodworks and Flessers Bakery for the contributon to the sausage sizzle; Liam Stevenson for the workshop; and the Canungra Services Club, The Canugra Times, Bendigo Bank, and Canungra State School for ongoing support of our community garden vision. Check out the Community Garden Facebook page for school holiday workshops.

Can we all increase our level of caution and care at this time of year; increased breeding and decreased precipitation is a recipe for disaster for our wildlife. There are lots of babies around and lots of animal movement in general, particularly wallabies, in search of food and water. Please slow down, and if you are unfortunate enough to come in contact with one, and it is safe to do so, take the time to check whether the animal is dead or still alive but injured. If deceased please check to see if there is a pouch Joey (easiest to check if boy bits present first and then you need look no further!). Do not remove the Joey from the pouch unless it is big enough to hop away. If it is still alive please call one of the numbers listed below and try to stay with the animal until help arrives. If you happen to see a ‘dead’ wallaby or similar, please follow same protocol as often a Joey is left to die in the pouch of his deceased Mum. If you are able, move the wallaby off the road to help avoid another accident. Remember that your own safety is paramount. For help with injured wildlife call: • Wildcare on 55272444, or if the lines are not ‘manned’ • Roy on 5543 4147/0421 644 156; • Bren on 5543 5917/0414 435 919; • RSPCA on 1300 ANIMAL. For any other wildlife issues, queries, interest in becoming involved in the care of our native wildlife in some way, shape or form please contact Wildcare on 5527 2444 or, preferably, visit our website at: www.wildcare.org.au. Wildcare is a voluntary organisation which relies on community support to operate an emergency telephone service. Their telephone service receives approximately 10,000 calls a year!

New Years Resolution... Know the Neighbours! How time races by and we get caught up in the fast pace of life’s rollercoaster of commuting, working, shuffling kids off to kindy, school, after school activities and so on. We forget to stop, breathe and enjoy our time in this wonderful place we’re lucky to call home. Some of us may have grown up here, some of us may have escaped the hectic lifestlye of elsewhere to live in a country environment away from all the craziness and disconnectedness. To become more connected. Yet we don’t. Too busy, don’t have time, another day, excuses and more excuses ... Oops another year has just gone by! Although it is a fantastic place to live here in the hinterland surrounded by the backdrop of Mount Tamborine and Lamington National Park, sometimes it can be a bit isolating, especially if you are a new comer. So, in the name of community spirit and fresh beginnings for the new year, I propose to introduce ourselves to our neighbours and form better relationships with in our community. To facilitate this, I am organising a neighbourhood get together event for January 2017. If you would like to assist with the planning or have some ideas, please call me - Tracy Rossi on 0468 635 099. Please watch for more details in January’s edition.

The Blue House - Best Friends Welcome Tucked away in Appel Street, is a little blue house that is a haven for those who want to escape the busy main street of town for a quiet coffee or to shop for a gift. Canungra residents who have fond memories of the Flutterby Fantasy shop that once graced our streets, will find the void has been filled. The Blue House carries several gift lines that Flutterby Fantasy held, and has a very similar theraputic feel. Owned and operated by the Baker family, The Blue House has carefully selected homewares, gift lines, Christmas decorations and jewellery. There are also a range of plants to choose from and ladies clothing. Everything is reasonably priced and during December the family are offering a 20% discount off all stock. In the Raw - Moving and Growing!

In the Raw Health Food Store are celebrating their first Birthday! When Linda Stollznow took over ‘In the Raw’ last year, it was a quaint friendly little store, but after listening to the local community Linda discovered there was a hunger for a healthier choice of food and for fresh fruit and vegetables. Since then Linda and the team have been busy sourcing a huge range of Organic & Natural foods including Organic & Gluten Free Breads and many general grocery lines. Shoppers will also find a wide range of sugar free, dairy free snacks and chocolates. By shopping at In the Raw you are supporting some wonderful local organic growers and are guaranteed to be buying the freshest of produce available. Linda said after many years of being involved with the Local Producers Association Farmers Markets, she has so many growers that can supply fresh produce every week from very few miles away. “The local community are very supportive and we wish to say thank you for shopping here and supporting your local businesses which is enabling the store to expand and bring a wider range of products close to home,” she said. And on the anniversary of their first birthday, the business has outgrown the current shop so the need for more space is a must! IN THE RAW ARE MOVING ... As of 1st December, 2016 In the Raw are moving to 8 Kidston Street, Canungra (Old Newsagent Building) so they can start to expand their range of grocery lines, fruit and vegetables, bulk products and a wider range of health care products. Once in the new premises, In the Raw will also be opening 7 DAYS A WEEK so come in and check out the new store and say hello to the friendly helpful staff.

Canungra Uniting Church and in conjunction with Canungra FoodWorks is running a Christmas Appeal where the goods will be distributed to people within our Scenic Rim community. Donna Tunbridge of Canungra Uniting Church is asking residents to purchase a gift for someone they don’t know by donating canned food items and toiletries. Gifts will be distributed to amilies and people who are on their own this Christmas and homeless, people who are doing it tough. Donations of the following items can be left at Canungra Foodworks: canned food; women’s personal products; toiletries - shaving cream, soap, tissues, deodorant, shampoo and soaps. Donations close on 14th December so that all gifts and food can be delivered by Christmas. These will be distributed by Canungra and Beaudesert Uniting Church and FSG Beaudesert. Donations can also be placed in the donation box at Canungra Uniting Church on Sundays at 10.30am. Donna said donations will put a smile on the face of someone who is doing it tough this year. “I met a Beaudesert family this week who had become homeless through no fault of their own. Mum and four children were alone and needed support, in this heat and with Christmas only six weeks away it really upset me. We can do more, all of us, it’s a time for caring for one another,” she said. If you or your business would like to support his appeal for the local community, please phone Donna 0425 301 241.

Witheren Local Rewarded for Innovation

A Witheren man who established an innovative guttering company to stem the number of deaths caused by people falling off ladders has scored more than half a million dollars to further develop the product. Local builder Alan Haley came up with the idea three years ago to make gutters which do not need cleaning. He established Eaves Water System International with business partner Bill Horton in a backyard shed at Witheren and demand for the product rapidly grew. Eaves gutters – the only product of their kind on the market – are designed to be enclosed so they don’t get clogged and don’t need to be cleaned but still collect water. Mr Haley and Mr Horton patented their product globally, established a factory on the Gold Coast and also set up an extra base in New Zealand. The gutters have generated strong interest locally, with people having them installed at Witheren, Tamborine, Tamborine Mountain, Beaudesert and Jimboomba. The company also has its sights set on America and Canada in 2017 and they have even been approached by potential customers in Dubai who are fed up with their gutters being filled up with sand and falling off.

Alan Haley from Eaves Water System International shows Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz the company’s lifesaving guttering product.

Now they have the means to keep up with their rapid expansion, with the $613,250 Entrepreneur’s Program grant tipped to take their success to the next level nationally and abroad. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz, who visited the Eaves factory to congratulate the company, said the product was a life-saving measure.

“We lose 500 people a year from people falling off ladders when they are cleaning their gutters each year and these local businessmen are doing an incredible thing in trying to address that,” he said. “It is a highly innovative product, and it gives me great pleasure to see these entrepreneurs being rewarded for their efforts.”

Nature’s Gems

Western Rosella (Paltycercus icterotis) By Melissa Whitby One of the best places to go bird watching in our amazing country is Western Australia. Two years ago I ventured there to see new bird species and I was not to be disappointed. One of the most beautiful birds that I was to observe was the Western Rosella. This stunning rosella is the smallest of all rosellas in Australia and is the only one to have yellow cheek patches. The male of the species has a red head and body with yellow cheek patches. The female is slightly different with green at the back of the head, red forehead, green back and duller yellow cheek patches. Two distinct races are evident throughout the birds’ range in south-west Western Australia. The nominate race can be located along the south-west coast and Race xanthogenys is located inland through the wheatbelt. Western Rosellas favoured habitats include open eucalypt forest, timbered areas, farmland and orchards. Their diet comprises of seeds of grasses, insects, flowers and fruit. Usually, the birds can be seen in pairs and small parties and feed in the foliage of trees or on the ground. The breeding season for the Western Rosella is from August to December and eggs are laid in a suitable tree hollow. I was lucky enough to literally stumble over a Western Rosella in my travels in south-west Western Australia. Whilst staying in a caravan park in Albany, I literally looked out my window one afternoon and saw several birds feeding on the ground. These particular Western Rosellas were familiar with people and I was able to approach the birds to get some amazing photographs. Western Rosellas are relatively common through south-west Western Australia, however, birds may be declining in areas such as the wheatbelt. For anyone interested in seeing Western Rosellas or other amazing birdlife in southwest Western Australia, I would strongly recommend staying in Albany and exploring the immediate vicinity. I was lucky enough to see an incredible array of birdWestern Rosella life and other wildlife in the area.

Empty Shelters this Christmas?

Ambassador Sally Pearson urges community to open homes and hearts to empty AWLQ shelters this Christmas Australian Olympic champion Sally Pearson OAM is calling on residents across South East Queensland to open their hearts and homes to shelter pets this Christmas during AWLQ’s annual Project Empty Shelter. The confirmed animal lover, AWLQ Ambassador and foster carer launched this year’s event, which will be held on Saturday 10th December and Sunday 11th December. “This is a chance to ensure every dog and cat in Animal Welfare League Queensland’s shelters has a home for Christmas,” Ms Pearson said. “Come on down and make a difference. “There is no greater gift to a shelter animal than a loving home.” Now in its fourth year, the annual event has become a popular way to support the animal charity, and the many abandoned and surrendered animals that come through its doors. “This is one of the most important weekends on the calendar for AWLQ dogs and cats,” Ms Pearson said. “We urge everyone who can to come down, meet some of the wonderful dogs and cats and get a bit of fur in the family. “If you have lost a dog or cat in the past year, consider adopting during Project Empty Shelter – you’ll be changing a life.” During the two day adoption drive adult dogs will be $50, adult cats $20. AWLQ Gold Coast, Brisbane (Warra and Willawong) and Beenleigh rehoming centres open their doors at 10am Saturday and Sunday. AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre: Shelter Road,

Cicadas, Singing the Songs of Summer By Susan Cully Cicadas are familiar insects with their conspicuous songs in summer and their empty shells discarded on tree trunks. Many cicadas, often with quaint names, were once collected and swapped on school grounds: Double Drummers, Razor Grinders, Cherry Noses, Bladder Cicadas, Green Grocers, Yellow Mondays, Floury Bakers, Black Princes and Cherry Noses. They are also known to anyone standing under a tree being showered with ‘cicada rain’, the numerous droplets excreted by these insects. The cicada relies on a liquid diet obtained by piercing the bark of plants and sucking up the sap with straw-like proboscis mouth parts. They consume sap at all stages of life, nymphs feeding on plant roots beneath the ground. Nymphs of individual species remain underground for between one and 17 years before emerging to sing for a partner. More than 50 species of cicadas occur in south-east Queensland Their song can be deafening, some can produce noise levels up to 120 decibels, which approaches the pain threshold of the human ear. This means that when many cicadas are singing together they produce a volume of sound that can become quite distressing to humans. The main function of cicada song is romantic. The male of each species has its own distinctive song designed to lure only females of the same species. Another function of this intense sound level is thought to be to drive birds away, a protective measure to reduce predation by birds. Different species have different ways of enhancing, modifying and amplifying the note produced. The bladder cicadas have air chambers in the abdomen causing resounding reverberations. Others flex the abdomen into different positions to change the note produced. Some clap their wings to produce song variations. See: Cicadas - Our Summer Singers Fact Sheet qm.qld.gov.au

I’ve gotten to this age because I don’t stress. See, look at me – still very cute – no stress wrinkles on this face! I have a cool and calm nature. I’m reliable, constant, and dependable. If you’re looking for a wise, independent cat, I am for you. I am low maintenance, low fuss; the perfect housemate. With that said, I still of course have plenty of affection to give. I’ll say hello in the morning, and go about my business independently. I’ve learnt how to occupy myself easily over the years, I am a great sleeper. So if you’re after some company without the ‘neediness’, I am for you! Maggie is $25 and is fully desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Huxley Domestic short hair cat, male, 2 years

Quick, what’s that? I’ll just go and investigate! Oooh oooh, what’s going on over there?! Did you hear that? This world is a very exciting place and I’m ready to check it all out! I’m a curious cat with lots of investigating to do. Nothing gets past me! No two days are the same if you’ve got me in your household. I like to play some days, do nothing other days, have a chat or keep quiet; mix things up a little. Life’s too short to be predictable! Excuse me now…I just have to go and check something out… Huxley is $25 and is fully desexed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Work on identifying who you are in the midst of the avalanche of messages coming from left right and centre, that would like you to be according to ideals that don’t fit. Individuation is what it’s all about right now for Rams. Get to know what’s in your heart and then let it shine.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

The temptation will be to get on your horse and ride. There’s a whole wide world out there that could do with one more random explorer. The other option is to have a good look at what it is that has got your wanting to run like the wind. The latter journey may be the more productive one.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

To progress, as you most certainly want to do, is going to take a whole lot of awareness. Forcing yourself to climb mountains will give you initial success but in the end you’ll rebound into lethargy. Real success is born from a relaxed, balanced stance. Be motivated by nature.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Christmas again. Already? I am sure many people make this statement every year as they wonder where time has flown. Are you excited as this special time approaches or does it create problems for you? For some it may mean too much spending, too much eating and drinking or worrying about how to entertain the children for those long school holidays. For others, it is a time of excitement as the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ brings a time of refreshment and renewal. It brings new hope and happiness. The chance to show our love to family, friends and neighbours, and the chance to pray for a new year with hope, faith and love being renewed. If you are worrying about not being organized with your cooking and gifts just come along to St Luke’s street stall being held outside the Butchers shop, on Saturday 19th December commencing at 8.00am until 12 noon. There will be plenty of home cooking as well as preserves, plants, and gifts. The raffle will include a decorated Christmas Cake as the major prize along with a variety of other prizes. Christmas Day for 2016 is on a Sunday so please feel free to come and celebrate at St Luke’s at the usual service time of 7.45am. We have a new sign outside the church to remind you of the service time each Sunday. Many thanks to Reg Rosenbaum for making and installing the sign. If you cannot make it on Christmas Day perhaps you might like to join us for drinks and food on Friday 30th December. This would be a great chance to meet some new people and prepare yourself for a peaceful and holy New Year. I take this opportunity to wish you all a blessed and wonderful Christmas and may 2017 bring peace and happiness to all.

Sport CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB By Kim Sami, Canungra Area Golf Club. A fantastic day was enjoyed by all at the Canungra Golf Club’s Pink Ambrose Golf Day on Saturday 29th October 2016! A huge thanks to Nora and the Shoe Vault for sponsoring the 3 person Ambrose event donating fabulous prizes for the day, the raffle and providing all players with a goodie bag to take home. Everyone had loads of fun and laughs. Congratulations to all the winners and for the effort made to have a successful event. $690 was raised and handed over to Nora on behalf of Cancer Awareness. We would like to thank the generosity of the Canungra Golf Club Community in supporting this event. Thanks to our amazing volunteers for ensuring a great day was had by all. Thirty-five golfers also attended the Terry Wall Memorial

Ambrose Day on Saturday 19th November, challenging each other for the much sought after privilege of having their name etched on the Memorial trophy. The day is always filled with great spirit and our winners, Gary Owen and Graeme Mulhearn were very deserving of the honour. The day finished with several of Terry’s mates sharing a beer and reminiscing of days gone by.

Sportsperson Awards

Sportsperson of the Year Awards will be held on Friday 3rd February at Moriarty Park. All monthly winners will be presented with their awards at the ceremony and special guest will be World Champion Hang Glider Johnny Durand.

Sportsperson of the Month - November

Sportsperson of the Month for November is the Under 9 Girls who received the - Bren Dalby Best and Fairest Award at the Canungra Owls Soccer Carnival in August. The girls played all boys teams at the carnival and their regular season was an all girls competition so this immediately had them out of their comfort zone, yet they showed no sign of fear, they were ready to get the job done. The first of eight games was against one of the leading under 9 boys teams. They lost the first game by a couple of goals and after the game the girls all wanted to know “are we playing any all girls teams today?“ The answer was no. Eight games, eight boys teams. It was hard to tell if they were worried, maybe a bit bemused but it was clear they were keen to play their best no matter what. Every team we played that day was amazed and surprised at the skill and determination of the eight girls opposing them, if they started the game with an easy win

mindset, they were quickly brought back down to earth. When the final hooter sounded in the last game, the team walked off with their heads held high, smiling, satisfied they had given everything they had. That was the proudest moment for me. After coaching these young ladies all season, and watching them develop their skills and grow their team spirit, this was the moment it all made it worthwhile. The girls won one game and drew another, and only narrowly lost the other six. The other teams, clearly impressed by the spirit of these girls, voted us to be best and fairest for the day, a perfect reward for their efforts. I want to say thank you to: Lily, Willow, Keely, Asiya, Phoenix, Alex, Ella and Paige for having me as your coach, hopefully next year we can keep this team together and I can once again be a proud coach..

Sportsperson of the Month - December

Kasey Wilson enjoys a variety of sporting and recreational events and strives to do her best and keep healthy. She was a member of the 13yr Girls Canungra Owls soccer team which was successful in reaching the finals this season, and hopes that the 2017 season will see Canungra Owls field another All Girl team. In addition to being a keen soccer player, Kasey is a talented middle-distance athlete. In 2016 she competed in an encouragement triathlon and fun runs, proving that getting out there and having a go is what matters most!

Moriarty Park News The introduction of middle distance running events at High School have seen Kasey’s athletics and crosscountry results improve. Kasey was successful over the past two years in winning her school cross-country and age champion athletics (drawn in 2016 with another talented sportsperson, Zali Young). In 2016 she represented her school at districts for both cross country and athletics events - 400m, 800, 1500m and javelin. She went on to qualify for Broadwater and compete at regional levels for cross -country, however sickness prevented her from competing at regionals for her qualifying events of 800m and 1500m in athletics. Her sporting success has seen her receive the Overall Junior Age Champion (Yrs 7-9) for both 2015 and 2016 at Tamborine Mountain State High School. Well done Kasey. Great to see girls keeping active through their teenage years!

Kasey at South Coast Regional Cross-Country where she placed in the top 30 out of 120 girls in the 13 girls event

Moriarty Park Community Sports Centre combined with Canungra Owls Soccer Club and presented a lovely plaque with picture of Moriarty Park grounds to Arkwood Christian Association ... aka Canungra Op Shop, for all their generous contributions to both organisations over the last few years. Bren said they are a wonderful group of people looking to help wherever and whenever they can and have helped out with lots of items on the organisations’ wish lists such as wonderful new lightweight tables at Moriarty Park, gazebos, soccer balls aplenty for the soccer Club, our annual Xmas Carols....the list goes on.... The Op Shop is a super place to shop and indeed to drop off any excess you have, or out grown clothes etc. If you haven’t been, please make an effort to go; you will be wonderfully impressed and all profits are split between our local community and overseas charities. And as part of this terrific community we live in, thank them and the volunteers who work there for all they do. We certainly would struggle without them!

Talicia

-

While most of her friends were getting ready for their Year 12 Graduation, Talicia Gosley was travelling around America, preparing to take on the world at the IBJJF No Gi Worlds and the SJJIF Worlds Jiu Jitsu Championships. Talicia travelled with her Coach, Geordie Lavers-McBain of Black Dragon Kai Martial Arts who has been training her for most of her career. She was extremely competitive, coming home with three Silver Medals and three Bronze Medals in the following divisions: • SJJIF Silver Medal in NoGi Openweight • SJJIF Silver Medal in NoGi Weightclass • SJJIF Silver Medal in Gi Openweight • SJJIF Bronze Medal in Gi Weightclass • IBJJF Bronze Medal in NoGi Weightclass • IBJJF Bronze Medal in NoGi Openweight Geordie said Talicia had been training hard for the World Championships and she had beaten World Champions in competition in Australia prior to going to the Worlds. Talicia began her training in Martial Arts at a young age and has trained and competed in several different disciplines, including Muay Thai, but has concentrated on Jiu Jitsu for the pastfive year. “She trains multiple times a day - running, classes and conditioning and has been competing in the Adult Divisions since she was 15 years old.” “She has great dedication to the sport. some very close matches means that she is a world class competitor,” he said. Returning to Australia, Talicia competed in the East Coast Australian Championship at Carrara on the Gold Coast on 27th November where she won four Gold Medals.

For this talented and dedicated young woman it looks like a Gold Medal at the World Championship is just a matter of time. “Everywhere we trained all the black belts were surprised by her skill. So I am very proud of her,” Geordie said.
