Water Trucks have Residents Stumped Canungra residents were scratching their
heads over the appearance of water trucks filling up the QUU water storage facility on Darlington Range Road following heavy rainfall in the region in December and January 2018. With a multi-million dollar water treatment plant recently completed, many residents assumed that the trucks were taking water from the storage facility, however one resident was told by a truck driver that they were actually filling the storage facility. According to Seqwater, the new treatment plant, located on National Park Road, has not yet been commissioned. DAY AWARDS Awards a Shout-Out For Quiet Achievers
SES flood boat crew members whose bravery and commitment came to the fore during Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie and volunteers who are vital threads in the fabric of their communities are among recipients of Scenic Rim Region Australia Day Awards for 2018. The awards were presented at The Centre Beaudesert on Wednesday 24th January, following a citizenship ceremony. The awards recognised the contribution of community groups and individuals who were nominated by residents of the region as unsung heroes who make the Scenic Rim such a great place to live. Before presenting the awards, Mayor Greg Christensen congratulated the nominees from all eight categories for their outstanding achievements. “They are all of an extremely high calibre and those of you who were nominated should be proud of the contribution you have made to your community,” he said.
Cr Duncan McInnes with SES representatives and Mayor Greg Christensen
“Choosing just one recipient for an award is never an easy task and the judging of this year’s awards was no exception. “Scenic Rim Regional Council is proud to present these Australia Day awards, acknowledging that those who give so much to their community also contribute in their unique way to our Australian way of life.”
“The calibre of this year’s nominees was outstanding and it was a tough decision to choose just one recipient. Importantly, this award recognises someone who has made a significant contribution to their community over many years without any thought of personal gain, and shows the community foundation we aspire to,” Cr Christensen said.

Community Event of the Year: Turning Canungra Pink Turning Canungra Pink began in 2009 when local business owner Dianne Crooks wanted to raise funds for breast cancer research. Since then, the event has been coordinated by the Canungra Chamber of Commerce with the aim to raise awareness and funds for all types of cancer. In 2017, Turning Canungra Pink involved most of the businesses and community organisations in Canungra and several from nearby Beechmont. The event has united Canungra with most businesses sporting pink decorations, shop fronts and produce, and community groups hosting a myriad of pink-themed events from raffles to markets and a car rally. The month’s activities culminated in a community dinner at Canungra School of Arts Hall, attended by almost 200 people. In 2017 alone, the event raised more than $45,000. Half of these funds were donated to Cancer Council Queensland. The remainder of the funds have been held in a fund to assist local people affected by cancer. Page 6

Beechmont Site To Evolve As Community Hub
The Beechmont Community Centre will continue to grow and evolve as a community hub and visitor destination following Council’s approval of a development application. The application by Beechmont Area Progress Association Incorporated (BAPA) will allow the Council-owned site of the former Beechmont State School to be used for markets, festivals, entertainment, indoor sports and recreation activities, weddings, church services, shared gardens, and community group functions and meetings. Planning and Development Committee Chair Cr Rick Stanfield welcomed the formalisation of arrangements which had existed between Council and BAPA for the past 10 years. Leased by BAPA, the community centre site on Beechmont Road incorporates the former state school and Headmaster’s Cottage, which now has approval to operate as a café, and is suited to a wide range of uses by individuals, clubs and community organisations. “Although the site has been used in many ways over the last ten years or so on an occasional basis, the development approval will allow for even greater focus on the longterm use of the space,” Cr Stanfield said.
“The site is an attractive visitor destination with spectacular views and much to offer as a community hub and arts and crafts precinct. “This is an exciting development, not only for Beechmont in meeting the needs of locals, but also the wider Scenic Rim
community by encouraging more people to visit our region.” The approved development will allow for 17 car parking bays, a service vehicle parking bay, and overflow parking.
WE’RE HAVING A BALL HELPING LOCAL CLUBS!
Canungra & District Community Bank© are proud to be named as Canungra Owls Soccer Club’s Major Sponsor for the next three seasons. The local soccer club has been the main sporting club in our community for many years and is growing. We asked the club President, Lana Rankin, about how our sponsorship money will make a difference: “The bank’s sponsorship over the next three seasons means that the committee can focus on what needs to happen to grow our club and make improvements, without the worry about where the money will be coming from. Our main focus this year is to have all of our teams kitted out in matching uniforms – something that will bring us together as a club and allow us to be recognised whenever we play on the Gold Coast. The past couple of seasons have seen teams wear different versions of uniforms, some as old as seven years. We’re really looking forward to the younger kids being able to keep their playing strips so they can wear them in the off season. “Over the next 12 months, we’ll be in talks with Bendigo Bank to discuss improvements we can make, both at Moriarty Park and for our players. It’s exciting to think how our club will be moving forward. We’re very grateful to our local bank and hope the community supports them in return.” Canungra & District Community Bank© are also proud to be supporting Tamborine Mountain Eagles Soccer Club for their 2018 season. We look forward to sharing their achievements with you all. If you are part of a community based club or not for profit association and would like more information about how we can help, please visit the branch, or give us a call. Be Part Of The Dialogue
Scenic Rim residents are invited to be part of the dialogue when Mayor Greg Christensen presents a series of Community Conversations throughout the region. Beaudesert, Tamborine Mountain, Beechmont, Boonah and Canungra will be venues for the community forums which will run from Tuesday 6th February to Thursday 15th February. Mayor Greg Christensen urged Scenic Rim residents not to miss an important opportunity to learn more about Council’s role in the community and to have their say to help guide future planning. “These Community Conversations aim to provide a clearer picture of how we operate and what informs our decision making,” he said. “For those who have not already done so, it’s also a great opportunity to meet their local Councillors, as well as to provide feedback on what they see as priorities within the scope of our operations. “Our challenge is to balance financial sustainability against community demand for services as the decisions we make today will have an impact, not only on this year’s Budget or the next, but also will represent a legacy for future generations.” Also up for discussion at the Community Conversations is the current review of the Scenic Rim Community Plan 2011-2026, which was developed as a shared vision between Council and residents of the Scenic Rim. “As we’re now at the mid-point in our 15-year journey, it’s worthwhile to pause and reflect on how we are travelling and to update some areas of the plan to take us forward,” Cr Christensen said. Community Conversations will run from 6pm to 8pm (doors opening at 5.30pm) at the following venues on these dates: • The Centre, Beaudesert, on Tuesday 6th February • Vonda Youngman Community Centre, Tamborine Mountain, Thursday 8th February • Hall on Graceleigh, Beechmont, Monday 12 February • Boonah Cultural Centre, Tuesday 13th February, and • Canungra State School, Canungra, on Thursday 15th February.
Safer Roads Grants
Applications are now open for Round Six of the Australian Government’s Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz encouraged local councils to work with residents and industry stakeholders to identify and prioritise upgrade projects and submit an application. “The Program provides funding for upgrades that will improve productivity and efficiency for our local businesses and road safety for all motorists,” Mr Buchholz said. “Funding is available for road improvements such as the construction of extended acceleration lanes from heavy vehicle rest areas, major intersection upgrades, sealing and road widening works, and road realignments.” Grants of up to $5 million are available under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program to meet up to 50% of the total cost of each project. Applications under the Heavy Vehicle Safety and Productivity Program close on 30th March 2018. “A strong regional roads network is crucial to ensure a safer run on the roads for residents and meet the needs of our local businesses making freight from supplier to market more efficient,” Mr Buchholz said. More information about the assessment process, critical dates, and key contacts, are available at: http://investment.infrastructure.gov.au/infrastructure_investment/heavy_vehicle_safety_and_productivity.aspx.

Keep Canungra Small
From My Window
with Keer Moriarty, Editor
When it all gets too hard...speak up My aim with The Canungra Times is always to report local news, but there are some topics that carry further than our area. In this edition I have included an article written by Emma Bogie, a former resident, about the aftermath of her partner’s death by suicide. Emma would be well known to many people in Canungra. I worked with her at O’Reilly’s Vineyard and she managed the Canungra Services Club for several years. Her daughter attended the school here and she has a lot of friends in the community. Emma wrote the story to break the stigma attached to mental illness, depression and suicide in men. She told me that she hopes it will make a difference to someone. That maybe someone who was thinking about suicide would read her story and change his mind. It can be hard to find the courage and motivation to speak up if you are struggling, and harder still for men who have to battle the stigma associated with mental illness. More so with men than women, there seems to be an unwillingness to ask for help and discuss problems. If you can’t talk to your partner or mates, try the local GP or Lifeline. There are always options. And yes, you might need medication, or it might take a long time to sort things out...but surely that’s better than leaving your family to live with the nightmare that Emma now lives?

Dear Editor, As a member of the Canungra community, I am appalled by our Council’s apparent determination to continue along the path of supporting more and more housing development projects in our town. Council needs reminding that Canungra is a small, historically-based village, proud of its long traditional heritage. It is a vibrant little village and a stop-over point for travellers and tourists alike. Driving down into Canungra from the Nerang side, one cannot fail to see in the distance the horrible, ugly scar that has been gouged out of the side of the mountain at the end of Regal Drive. The residents abutting this development are not happy to say the least. The number of houses allotted for this new development is anybody’s guess, but most likely in the hundreds. Many Canungra residents would not even be aware that this development is happening – it is clearly urban development through stealth. This particular development project is in addition to the somewhat completed Canungra Rise Estate situated near the sewerage works (a fitting place for a new development I would say, particularly during flood time!) Council would do well to realise that the Canungra community wants to keep our rustic charm and village atmosphere intact. This is what makes us unique. This is why we choose to stay here. I urge all Canungra residents to be active in voicing their concerns about this insidious, profit driven, urban development tidal wave (obviously supported by Council) which is threatening our beautiful village. Let us all “stop the urban sprawl – keep Canungra small”. Jeremy West, Canungra

New Faces at Blackbird Pies Blackbird Country Pies is under new management, with Loretta Thomson taking over the business recently. Loretta worked with the previous owners, Greg and Fern Davis, before buying the business to allow Greg and Fern to retire. Loretta has renamed the shop Blackbird Country Pies and Sweets, keeping the same delicious range of wood fired pies and adding to the range of sweets previously available. The famous salmon and brie pies that Blackbird is well known for are still available, and of course customers can add mushy peas to their pies as well! The range of sweets includes many traditional favourites such as vanilla slice, apple pies and custard tarts. Loretta has already updated the signage and added EFTPOS to the shop. She will be assisted by her partner, Richard East and her son, Rhys Beloe. Blackbird Country Pies and Sweets is located next Richard East, Loretta Thomson and Rhys Beloe to the Canungra Motel at 2/47 Christie Street, Canungra. Cold party packs and pre-orders are available for all pies. They are open seven days a week from 7.15am until 5pm, for orders and enquiries please phone Loretta on 0419 732 110.

Regions At The Heart Of Community Plan Pulse Check
Council is seeking community feedback to renew the focus of the shared vision for the future of the Scenic Rim during its Community Plan Pulse Check in coming weeks. The Community Plan 2011-2026 was developed by Council following extensive community consultation during 2011and reflects the aspirations of Council and the community for the growth and development of the region. Corporate and Community Services Chair Cr Virginia West urged Scenic Rim residents to offer their feedback on proposed amendments to the plan, either at a series of Community Conversation public forums in February or by mail or email in written submissions to Council. “The review of the Community Plan takes account of the significant changes which have occurred in the Scenic Rim during the past five years,” she said. The Community Plan was initially developed as a legislative requirement under the Local Government Act 2009. “Although the Act was amended in 2012 so that this was no longer a legislative requirement, Scenic Rim Regional Council remains committed to advocating for the implementation of a long-term vision for the area focused on the unique beauty, heritage and landmarks as reflected in its Community Plan 2011-2026,” Cr West said. “We recognise the vision of the Scenic Rim community embedded in the Community Plan and regard it as a valuable document to provide long-term direction for the region.” Submissions on proposed amendments to the plan and any other feedback will be accepted until 5pm on Friday 9 March 2018. “Council is the custodian of the Community Plan for members of the Scenic Rim community but community feedback is vital for the development, implementation and life of the plan,” Cr West said.

Mountain Tennis Club Scores Lease
It’s game, set and match to Tamborine Mountain Tennis Club Inc, which has scored a new five-year lease from Council on premises in Beacon Road. Corporate and Community Services Chair, Cr Virginia West, said that since the club’s first entered into a lease agreement with Council in 2010 it had made significant improvements to the property which included a tennis court, clubhouse, toilet block, storage room, water tanks and car park. “From its founding in 2001, the club has experienced strong growth, particularly in recent years, of around 20 per cent annually, so that membership now stands at around 140,” she said. “It’s not only a high quality sporting facility but also a social hub for the local community. “The tennis courts are hired by club members, the general public and the neighbouring Tamborine Mountain College.” Cr West said the club’s mission to encourage participation in tennis and social interaction aligned with Council’s vision for a healthy and active Scenic Rim community. “The club is continuing to plan ahead for future generations of players and administrators so that more juniors, seniors and volunteers can enjoy being part of a highly successful community tennis association,” she said.
This Story Might Just Save a Life
The following was taken from ‘A Chance for Change’ Facebook page. The page is dedicated to fighting for men’s mental health. ACFC offers a lived approach to the prevention of depression and suicide. It was written by former Canungra resident, Emma Storezenko and reproduced with permission. My name is Emma, I’m 40 years old with a 16 year old daughter and a 16 year old step daughter - the lights of my life. In 2013 I met Mark online, we chatted for a year before we met. Christmas 2014 was when I first got to see the love of my life. He looked at me and said “you pass with flying colours”. We were pretty much inseparable from that day on, weekends away, lazy nights at home, everything was perfect. Fast forward one year and Mark said to me “I need more time with you”. We decided to move in together. He was caring, generous, loving, romantic and best of all he was going to be my husband. Fast forward to 2016, the year started off perfect, we were happy and secure, the kids were great, it really was perfect. In July, out of the blue he was anxious and sad. He kept talking about work - how much he hated it and everything was stuffed. I tried to talk to him but it didn’t really make sense to me, he kept talking about all the problems at work and that it was no use. I called his Dad to let him know something was wrong. I took him to the doctor who said it was work related stress - this all happened in just one week. He took time off and I continued to work, making sure his Dad checked on him. On 7th July I got home from work, he was still anxious but not as bad as previous days. We talked so much that night, looking back now
Mark and Emma
I know why. He was making sure he knew every single thing about me. On Friday 8th July I had a massive day at work. I was woken by Mark very early (he couldn’t sleep), we spoke for a couple of hours which seemed to calm him down, then I went to work. We spoke several times that day by phone. I told him to keep active and busy, I said “I got you babe” he told me everything would be ok. At 11pm I arrived home. It wasn’t normal. It was all dark. At 11.05pm I called 000. I found the love of my life had taken his own life. I screamed for help. I tried to help him but i was too late... From that moment on life changed. I just sat in his chair for days, everyone around me doing things and talking, yet I just sat there wanting to be with my man. I wanted to die too - I wanted to be with him. I planned his funeral with his family, I was meant to be packing as we had a holiday
booked for my 40th but no holiday now just heartache. I laid my man to rest on 21st July, overwhelmed with devastation. Knowing I will never get over this. On 25th July I turned 40. I didn’t celebrate I cried. I cried for him, I cried for me, I cried for the kids. His suicide ended his pain, but it gave me, the kids and his family a lifetime of heartache and pain,. I have to live with the fact that I couldn’t save him, the memory of finding him, and with a pain so deep I sometimes wish I would die too. We share millions of memories but they are clouded by that one night. His suicide has ruined me. I’m not the same person anymore, I feel like a robot half the time, just trying to make it through the day. The nightmares are constant, the fake smiles, someone says how are you, you say fine, but deep inside thats wishful thinking. What I would give to be fine. They call it the AFTERMATH I can tell you now suicide does not end your problems. You take the life of your loved ones as well. Your suicide will destroy the ones who love you the most, your suicide will leave scars so deep in your children that no doctor or shrink could ever fix. Your suicide leaves your wife or partner so traumatised that they barely survive, the person you love the most you actually destroy by taking your own life. Suicide doesn’t fix or end your problems you just give it to us left behind. Just talk to someone anyone, your not a coward if you cry, you’re not weak for letting out your issues, there is light at the end of the tunnel, fight for it.

Flood Recovery Update
Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie in early April 2017 was a one-in-500 year flood event for the Scenic Rim affecting half our road network, including three quarters of the gravel roads and a number of bridges. A damage bill of $38.500 million. To date the QRA have approved $29.7 million in restoration funding and a further submission has been lodged for $14.3 million in Betterment funding so damaged assets can be reinstated with greater resilience.

Canungra Heritage Wonglepong Railway Station By Joyce Libke The areas of Henry Franklin Family Park and Mahony Reserve, Wonglepong, were public land from the earliest days of settlement. When the railway line from Logan Village was built to Canungra in 1915 a piece of this public land was taken to accommodate the necessary station. This station was named “Sarah Vale” - using the name of the adjacent Franklin property. On speaking to elderly members of the then local families it was apparent that a neighbourhood row was brewing over the choice of name. I do remember being told that my Grandfather, Arthur Campbell (who owned the property across the creek) did not have some piece of essential equipment arrive on the train (remembering there were daily train runs then). On investigation it was found at Laravale. Maybe this episode gave the warring factions a chance to lobby for a change of name. Whatever the reason, the name was changed to Wangalpong in later 1915 and remained so until 1928, when the spelling was changed to Wonglepong. These name appear to have originated on the eastern side of Tamborine Mountain - maybe the authorities deliberately chose a name that had no local connections? In the heyday of the timber industry, Wonglepong was an important station with a double line. This meant that logs from the side of Tamborine Mountain could be loaded ready to be picked up when the train passed through, or two trains could pass there. I only remember it during its dying years before the line closed in 1955. Wonglepong was then only one line and a little open shed under the Moreton Bay fig tree. When I came in the bus from Brisbane on Friday nights in 1954, the driver would point out to his tourist passengers that the name was longer than the station. The QCWA Wonglepong Branch that was founded in 1925, had ladies that came to the monthly meetings by train. In the old minutes we find that, as the frequency of trains declined, every so often they would change their meeting day to fit in with a changed timetable. Records show that the first school in the district was opened in 1884 - where the plaque is in Henry Franklin Family Park as Caningera no 423 and closed in 1893. It reopened in 1898 as Caningera Lower no 836 which remained the school’s number until it closed in 1935. Canungra Schools: Caningera - 1884 to 1893; Caningera Lower - 1898 to 1915; Wangalpong - 1915 to 6/2/1928; Wonglepong 6/2/1928 to 15/9/1935
Nature’s Gems
Common Wombat (Vombatus ursinus) By Melissa Whitby Much of my writing is dedicated to Australian wildlife species that are declining and need the Australian public to be aware of their plight. One such animal is the Common Wombat. This incredible creature is easily recognised by its stocky frame, large claws and coarse grey-brown fur. The Common Wombat has a distribution, which includes South-east Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania. This species can be found in a variety of habitats including coastal scrub and heath, wet forest and dry forests. The Common Wombat certainly does not mind living in the snow either! Much of the Common Wombat’s time is spent sheltering in large burrows and feeding at suitable times of the day and night. Their diet includes tubers, grasses and other coarse vegetation. Common Wombats are usually solitary unless a female is accompanied by a youngster. Usually only one young is born over a two to three year period. In Queensland, another wombat species known as the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat does exist but it is endangered and is only known in a few locations. Some populations of Common Wombats suffer from Wombat Mange. The mange is a disease caused by a parasitic mite, which burrows into the skin of the wombat and causes hair loss and crusty skin. If members of the public come across Common Wombats that are visibly suffering from chronic mange, authorCommon Wombat ised wildlife carers should be contacted immediately. I have had the pleasure of seeing many Common Wombats in my travels to Tasmania. The best place to observe them at close quarters is Cradle Mountain. Care should be taken and their personal space respected. For those wanting to encounter Common Wombats in Queensland, it is a little harder. The best place to look is in areas such as Girraween National Park near Stanthorpe. In my travels to these areas, I have only seen evidence of the wombats’ burrows. Common Wombats are an iconic Australian species found nowhere else in the world. I never cease to be amazed by these extraordinary creatures and hope that their presence in the Australian bush continues unaltered for generations to come.

Splendid Summer for Richmond Birdwing Butterfly
By Susan Cully This yellow egg cell was laid by a Richmond Birdwing Butterfly. In our hinterland, the summer of 2017-8 has been a spectacularly successful year for this vulnerable butterfly, many sightings of males and females having been reported. When the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly emerges as an adult, the male will travel six kilometres, and the female will travel 30 kilometres to feed and to mate. The female will live four to six weeks and will lay between 60 and 100 eggs. She will need to find the correct leaf for her eggs. Most plants are unsuitable for her offspring to eat. A garden vine, the Dutchman’s Pipe, will kill the babies with their first bite. She must find a Pararistolochia vine, one of two species only. When she lays the egg it needs enough leaf cover to remain safe for ten to 13 days. Then the larvae need to be safe from spiders, bugs and birds for between two and ten months. The rest of the story is about the vines. They have special requirements as well. Their existence relies on an unknown insect to pollinate the flowers, probably a fly or a wasp. Two thirds of their original range has been lost due to land clearing and urbanisation. Without these vines, the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly will cease to exist. The butterfly does not use the flowers, only the leaves, for egg laying and for caterpillar food and habitat. In Queensland the conservation status of this butterfly is ‘VULNERABLE, and that of the vines is ‘RARE, (Nature Conservation Act 1992). The butterfly is ranked as a critical priority for the Department. of EHP Back on Track species prioritisation framework. Habitat loss, population fragmentation and inbreeding weakness are the key threatening processes, all exacerbated by climate change. Do you want to help this butterfly? The Canungra Times - February 2018
The Australian Veterinary Association (AVA) is warning animal owners about the dangers of leaving pets in vehicles. AVA President Dr Paula Parker said every year, numerous pets are found confined to vehicles during hot conditions, which is a major animal welfare concern. “The temperature inside a vehicle on moderate to hot days, even with the windows partially open, can rise quickly and to dangerous levels. An animal exposed to these extreme temperatures is likely to suffer serious heat-related illness or in some cases, it could result in the death of a beloved family pet.” “Even relatively mild ambient temperatures (eg 22°C) where the windows are partially lowered to provide ventilation can still cause an animal to experience hyperthermia (increased body temperature), which is a serious health and welfare issue.” “Animals that are exposed to the elements on the back of utility trucks may also suffer hyperthermia during hot conditions,” Dr Parker said. Signs of hyperthermia and heat-related illness include lethargy, excessive panting, breathing problems, collapse and unconsciousness. “It’s important that animals are removed without delay from these situations, even if the owner cannot be found immediately. Intervening early by removing the animal, cooling them with continuous running water (avoiding the head) and getting them to a veterinarian immediately can be life-saving.” “If members of the community notice an animal locked inside a vehicle and believe it is at risk of hyperthermia, they should report the case immediately to police, animal welfare officers or firefighters who can take action to rescue the pet,” Dr Parker said. Any pet that suffers hyperthermia should be taken to a veterinarian as soon as possible for assessment.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Have you ever been asked to give up your seat for anyone? Or have you ever wished someone would move along a little so you could sit down? Sometimes we tend to claim ownership of a certain seat or position because we feel that is where we belong. If we buy a ticket to a show we know exactly which seat it will be and we hope it will maximize the view and quality of whatever we are attending. Have you ever gone to a function and hoped you weren’t sitting in someone else’s seat? The congregation at St Luke’s has grown in recent times and when a newcomer or visitor comes along we are all very happy to give up our seats. Yes, we do tend to sit in the same place each week but everyone is very welcoming to see new faces and is only too happy to move along and make room. How important is it in whatever we do in life to make room for an extra person or other people? Apart from demonstrating a sense of caring it is also giving us the opportunity to meet someone new and learn from that experience. Imagine how much better the world would be if we took the time to get to know someone new. You are all invited to join in at St Luke’s. There will always be a seat there just for you; and the friendly, down to earth atmosphere may be just what you are looking for. The cuppa and morning tea afterwards could be a great way to start your Sunday. St Luke’s Sunday service commences at 7.45am. Listen for the bell, jump out of bed and come along. A seat awaits you.

An early start to the season has seen the community come together and get organised well and truly before we were ready to. A huge thank you to the parents and players who have come out of holiday mode early ready to face the season ahead, we welcome your enthusiasm for this great game. Moriarty Park Sportsperson Awards By Bren Dalby The Sportsperson of the Year Awards will be held at Moriarty Park Hall on Sunday 11th February 2018 from 6pm. 2017 Nominees
Saxon Matena Patrick Mathers Harvey Mahony Bently Mahony Canungra Owls U12s - Most of the Canungra Owls U12 team (coached by Errol Irvine and managed by Ang Mackenzie) have been playing together for a couple of years and until now, have not had many winning experiences. In the first few games in the 2017 season, not only were they kicking goals, but they were winning by large margins. As a result, they have changed division and
are now playing (and winning!) against tougher teams on the Gold Coast. • Amy Mathers - In November 2016 Amy gained entry in to Galaxy FC Academy so for 9-10 months of the year, on top of her usual soccer commitments, Amy has been training with a team of professional futsal coaches. Although Amy is an U9 player, she is training with the U10 Development team. She has been a member of the Canungra Owls since 2013 and in 2017 played in the mixed U9s competition. Amy refereed her first U7 game in June and is looking forward to being a referee in the future! • Asyia Hickey - Asyia had been Muay Thai training for about eight months and not yet thought about heading over to the fighters class, yet when given the opportunity she jumped at it and won her first fight on Friday 10th November. She has since won an Australian Title.

He is a very good runner and has also represented the school in AFL, rugby and athletics. • Charlotte Flynn-Grant - Charlotte’s achievements in 2017 include achievements in girls rugby league, athletics, cross country and AFL. She was Sarabah Sports House Captain 2017.

CANUNGRA AREA GOLF CLUB By Kim Sami Canungra Area Golf Club has been very busy over the past few months with our Turn Canungra Pink Ambrose Golf Day followed by our Canungra Open Golf Day. We also had the announcement that our Club has been successful in securing the Queensland Governments Get Playing Places and Spaces Grant. The Canungra Area Golf Club would like to thank and acknowledge the Queensland Government who provided $148 272 to our Tee upgrade and Machinery/Cart Shed upgrade project to enable Queenslanders to participate in sport and recreation activities. The Pink Ambrose Day on Saturday 14th October was a huge success with the day attracting about 40 players dressed in an array of pink attire. We would like to send a massive thank you to Nora and The Shoe Vault for sponsoring the day which netted $700 to the Turning Canungra Pink campaign. The Winners and Grinners on the day were Team Brechbuhl (Greg, Dylan and Chatchi), Runners Up were Gary Owen, Ross Hewlett and Tobes Uccetta and of course the most fabulously dressed team was Team Firth with Steve Firth, Roger Harriman and Kenny Gear wearing their finest pink tutus!! A great day was had by all for a very worthy cause. Another fantastic day in paradise with the Canungra Open Golf event held on the 28th October in perfect conditions. Thanks to our major sponsors including Fujiclean, Titan Garages, Binna Burra Lodge and Clouds Accommodation packages and all of our other sponsors and volunteers who made the day so successful. Congratulations to all of the players and the winners of the day.

On Saturday 9th December we celebrated the years’ achievements with our traditional Gala and Presentation Day. Members and their families dressed up in some crazy outfits and played a jumbled up game of golf. A delicious lunch was shared by all. It was a fantastic way to finish up the official 2017 calendar of events. We are back again now for our 2018 season with the official fixture competition for the Mixed and Men’s competitions underway. The ladies will start their 2018 season on 6th February. Lastly, on a sad note we would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the Mills and McAllan families on the recent passing of Sheila Mills. Sheila joined the Canungra Area Golf Club as a young 70 year old. She played competitive golf, representing Canungra Golf Club on several occasions, still swinging that club up until mid 2017 at 95 years of age. She was an inspiration and will be truly missed within our club.
