Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards

Australia Day Awards Celebrate Community Champions Canungra resident, Nigel Allsopp is the Scenic Rim’s Citizen of the Year. Nigel has campaigned for public recognition of the wartime service of animals and their handlers and was instrumental in the erection of the wartime animal memorial in D J Smith Park. The 2019 Australia Day Awards, presented by Mayor Greg Christensen at The Centre Beaudesert on Thursday 24th January, honoured the contribution of community groups and individuals.

“Scenic Rim Regional Council is proud to present these Australia Day awards, acknowledging those who give so much to their community,” he said. Before presenting the awards, Mayor Greg Christensen congratulated the nominees from each of the four categories for their outstanding achievements. “They are all of an extremely high calibre and those of you who were nominated should be proud of the contribution you have made to your community,” he said.

“Choosing just one recipient for an award is never an easy task and the judging of this year’s awards was no exception.” Awards were presented to the winning nominees in the categories of Community Event of the Year, Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year (16-30 years), Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year (31-65 Years) and Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year (65+ years) and the Mayor’s Award.

DAY AWARDS Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year (31 - 65 Years): Nigel Allsopp As the Founder and President of the Australian

War

Animals

Memorials

Organisation, Canungra resident Nigel was a driving force in the establishment of a memorial, commemorating animals and their handlers who served in times of war, which was unveiled on Remembrance Day last year at D J Smith Park Canungra. AWAMO has established 25 memorials around Australia. Nigel has a long history of working with animals and first conceived of AWAMO while serving alongside military dogs in Mogadishu in 1993. Prior to that time, none of the Australian animals who served overseas had been allowed to come home. He has worked with animals his entire life, including more than 30 years professionally. He said he feels a calling to speak on their behalf as they have no voice of their own. “They have given this nation so much,” he said, “We could not have gone to any war without them; even today, they save Diggers’ lives by detecting roadside bombs.” Nigel also lectures at universities and has written several books about animals

SCENIC RIM AUSTRALIA Citizen of the Year (65+ Years): Margaret Manthey A recent recipient of the Meritorious Service Award from Scouts Australia, Margaret is dedicated to ensuring the Scouts continue to operate in Beaudesert and is a role model for the group’s young members. She is a quiet achiever, showing the scouting spirit and overcoming challenges with determination and good humour.

Citizen of the Year (16 - 30 Years): Laura Ross Laura appreciates the value and contribution of everyone in her team and has demonstrated excellent leadership abilities, participating in social service activities at Tamborine Mountain State High School. She worked as a volunteer with the road safety program and her book drive. Laura was nominated for an award for her exemplary values in all facets of life and for taking the lead in achieving tasks.

Mayor’s Award: June Herbohn and Kodi Sawtell The Mayor’s Award, recognises personal achievement across all categories and was shared this year between two exceptional nominees. “As always, the calibre of this year’s nominees was outstanding but this year it was not possible to choose just one recipient,” Cr Christensen said. “This is an award which recognises aspects of selflessness as hallmarks and attributes which we should celebrate, as they are in short supply across society.” Like many of the Scenic Rim’s community champions, June Herbohn works behind the scenes and shuns the limelight - so much so that it was only recently that her committee, the Beaudesert Branch of the Cancer Council, managed to photograph her at her charity work. She has volunteered for 40 years with the Uniting Church Auxiliary, 15 years with Blue Care Auxiliary and, more recently, as a volunteer with Chicks Conquering Cancer. June’s energy and willingness to have a go are an inspiration to others as she tackles all her tasks with enthusiasm and grace. Kodi Sawtell has been a volunteer for nine years within the Scenic Rim at events including the Boonah Arts Festival Youth Showcase, Boonah Bookfest and the Winter Harvest Festival. Her efforts have helped the Boonah Chaplaincy raise funds and contributed to an education bursary to help students in financial need.

DAY AWARDS New Citizens To Mark Australia Day As Fair Dinkum Aussies Australia Day 2019 had special significance for nine Scenic Rim residents who celebrated the country’s national day as fair dinkum Aussies. In a special ceremony celebrating 70 years since the birth of Australian citizenship, nine migrants pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people at The Centre Beaudesert following the 2019 Australia Day Awards. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said that since Australia Day 1949, when legislation brought the concept of Australian citizenship into being, more than 4.5 million people from around the world had pledged to become Australian citizens. “The history and culture of Australia has been forged over thousands of years, from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to those who have come from every compass point around the globe,” he said. “We have another nine people standing before us to pledge their loyalty to

our country and its people, our democratic beliefs, our laws, our rights and our liberties.” The Scenic Rim’s newest citizens have come to Australia from the United Kingdom, the Philippines, Ireland, Thailand, the Czech Republic, and New Zealand. To mark the 70th anniversary of Australian citizenship, the Scenic Rim’s newest

Australians were presented with a special commemorative coin. “It was only on Australia Day,1949, that the concept of Australian citizenship came into being, when the Nationality and Citizenship Act of 1948 took effect, introducing a unique national identity for Australians beyond their previous status as British subjects,” Cr Christensen said.

SES Scenic Rim’s January Rescues

State Emergency Services (SES) are well known in the Scenic Rim and beyond for the work they do. January proved to be a busy month for the SES personnel who hiked 11 kilometres through bushland to rescue an injured woman near Binna Burra on Monday 21st January. An SES spokesperson said the call came at 7pm and under the direction of Queensland Police Service, SES members carried out the rescue, along with Queensland Ambulance Service staff. “It was an 11 kilometre round hike while carrying the stretcher across difficult terrain,” the spokesperson said, “They began at 8.30pm and finished at 1.30am. Most of the members from SES Scenic Rim and SES Gold Coast involved in the rescue made it home by 3am.” A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the fall took place approximately six kilometres into the Lower Ballanjui Falls Track at Binna Burra. On 27th January SES crews were called out to rescue a 60 year old woman with a suspected broken leg from the Border Track at Lamington National Park.

SES crews carry out a rescue in Lamington National Park

During this callout, crews were called for a second activation to rescue another 60 year old woman experiencing heart palpitations at Bullants Track, near O’Reillys Rainforest Retreat.

The relatively small team on the Border Track covered a total of 10 kilometres in extreme heat. The crews were quick to reach both casualties and successfully delivered each of the patients to waiting Queensland Ambulance Service units. SES crews are all volunteers, many of whom who work full time and have family commitments. “We are incredibly proud of the commitment, professionalism and dedication of these members, they volunteer their time because the are passionate about helping others in need,” said the spokesperson. SES Beaudesert and Scenic Rim Groups are looking for new recruits for 2019. They are trying to expand their volunteer base and specifically looking for people who love to help support the community. Recruits are not required to have prerequisites, just a willingness to help, a sense of adventure, a love of an active and healthy lifestyle and enthusiasm. If you would like more information visit the SES Scenic Rim Unit on Facebook or contact the SES South East Office on 5547 3108.

What

Really

Residents in the Boyland area have been on high alert following reports on social media of animals being mutilated. The first such report was Josie, a 16 month old blue cattle dog who went missing from her home on Thursday 3rd January. Josie’s owner, Tess Wills said Josie never left the yard and was a very timid dog. “As soon as we saw she was missing, we thought someone had taken her,” said Tess. Tess and her husband found Josie’s body on Saturday 5th January, about 200 metres from their home in a place they had searched several times. Tess immediately noticed marks on Josie’s body that she thought were the result of mutilation. Although she took photos, she didn’t take Josie to the vet. “We did exhume her body after talking to a vet but she was too decomposed to get an answer about the cause of death,” said Tess. Tess also took the photos to Canungra Vet Surgery where the vet assessed that a traumatic event was the cause of her death, but could not say if it was a car accident or mancaused traumatic event. Canungra Police Sergeant Craig Roberts said inquiries with local residents lead police

to believe that Josie had died as a result of involvement with other dogs. “Residents have reported seeing what appear to be wild dogs roaming the areas backing onto bushland in Boyland and Wonglepong,” said Craig. “These dogs have been seen chasing wallabies and other animals, and this has been the case for a number of years. There are also cats, foxes, snakes and vehicles that can contribute to the injury or demise of animals in all areas. There have been no reports to Canungra Police about other dogs or, as has been reported on social media, horses being mutilated.” “Canungra Police do not believe that there is currently a person or persons going around in the Boyland or surrounding areas mutilated or killing animals. This fear is unfortunately spread through social media. While social media is a great tool for keeping in touch with people and spreading news, it’s content can often be fuelled by emotion and opinions, sometimes contrary to what the evidence shows,” he said. Tess said that two of her neighbours reported seeing a silver Hyundai Getz or similar in the area around the time that

Josie disappeared and again on Saturday afternoon. Canungra Police recommend that all animals be contained within their enclosed yards or paddocks to minimise the possibility of the death of a beloved pet.

New Plant Meets Canungra’s Future Thirst

Canungra’s long-awaited new treatment plant is fully operational, treating almost four times more drinking water for the local community. Acting Natural Resources Minister Mark Furner said the $4 million plant would cater for future increased water demand for the growing Canungra community and had been built in line with Seqwater’s 30 year water plan for South East Queensland. “The new plant will be able to produce 1.5 million litres of treated drinking water each day, which is almost four times the production capability of the old plant, ensuring we can meet the community’s future water needs,” Mr Furner said

“The previous water treatment plant had been operating for almost 50 years and some of its structural components had reached the end of their service life.” Scenic Rim Regional Council Mayor Greg Christensen and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West today joined Seqwater Chief Executive Officer Neil Brennan to officially open and tour the new treatment plant. Cr Christensen said the new plant would be essential to supporting the community and local businesses into the future with Canungra’s population expected to more than triple to 3000 people over the next 20 years.

“A secure and reliable water supply is critical to Canungra’s continued prosperity and the health of its residents and environment,” Cr Christensen said. “This project complements Seqwater’s plans to connect Beaudesert and Wyaralong Dam to the SEQ Water Grid for the first time to ensure the future water supply security for the Scenic Rim. The Canungra Water Treatment Plant is a stand-alone water supply system providing water to the township of Canungra and Maurita Court. The network also includes several Queensland Urban Utilities–owned reservoirs located at Appel Street and Maurita Court.

The Canungra School of Arts Hall held a little piece of Scotland as the Burns Night, commemorating the life of Scottish poet Robert Burns was held on Friday 25th January. The crowd enjoyed a three course Scottish dinner, poetry and traditional Scottish dancing, with many donning their tartan for the evening. Organiser Bren Dalby thanked Canungra FoodWorks for donating the food for the evening and Canungra Bowls Club for assisting with the catering. “Without their help it would not be possible,” said Bren. Bren added that this would be the last Burns Night for Canungra but she hopes to run another Scottish themed evening in June or July.

A New Chance:

At 1am on 1st December, Chris Duncan got the phone call he had been waiting two years for. Chris had been on the waiting list for a double organ transplant for two years. He was removed from the list several times when he became ‘too ill’ to have the surgery. After five hours of surgery at Sydney’s Westmead Hospital to transplant the donor pancreas and kidney, Chris immediately noticed a difference in how he felt. “The surgeons were surprised by how quickly I recovered. The kidney started making urine immediately and that alone is better than the doctors expected,” said Chris. Chris is urging as many people as possible to register as organ donors. “In 2018, 554 deceased organ donors saved 1544 lives - and I was one of those,” he said, “My donor alone saved 10 people through tissue and organ donation.” Currently, only one in three Australians are registered organ donors. There are 1400 people on the transplant waiting list, but 15% of those will die while waiting.

Chris’ Transplant

“Only 10% of deaths are suitable for organs to be used, which is why it is so important for people to be registered. Of those deaths not viable for organ donation body tissues can still be donated,” said Chris. It is also important that people discuss their wishes with their families, as the family can override the donor’s wishes. Prior to surgery, complications arising from Type 1 Diabetes meant Chris was having dialysis three times a week. He was frequently nauseous, had no energy and was very limited in what he could do without having to rest. Today he has more energy, doesn’t need insulin or dialysis, is free of the highs and lows associated with diabetes, and has had no nausea since the surgery. “I still have days when I feel like crap but I’m only eight weeks out of surgery now and it takes six months to recover,” he said. Chris says the stories of strange cravings after a transplant appear to be true, as he now has chilli sauce on everything - something he rarely ate previously. The first 12 months following an organ transplant are the most critical. Chris is

The Canungra Times - February 2019

taking drugs which lessen the chances of rejection but compromise his immune system, making a return to his previous career, nursing, unviable. Instead, he has enrolled in a Diploma of Tourism and Travel Management and taken on voluntary work in the community, as well as raising awareness of organ donation. “Being an organ donor does not mean health professionals are less likely to try to save you in an emergency situation,” said Chris, “Age and medical history are considered, but no one should assume they are too young, old or unhealthy to be a donor.” Chris recommends the documentary ‘Dying to Live’, available on SBS on Demand to anyone interested in being a donor. For more information about organ donation, visit donatelife.gov.au or speak to your doctor. Below, Chris’ Journey (photos left to right): having dialysis on his birthday prior to surgery; five hours post surgery; four days post surgery; two weeks post surgery; six weeks post surgery.

Changes at Canungra State School

From My Window

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Remember to Support Your Local Businesses I’m writing this on the Monday of the long weekend. Canungra has been hot and busy. The heat is pretty oppressive, with no real end in sight. It is the kind of weather that promises rain, but none comes. The local campgrounds are full, the main street is busy and, despite this being the last week of school holidays, there seem to be plenty of people still enjoying the last few days of family time. In the midst of this, there are still many of the local businesses who know that February in particular is always a slow month. For some, the Christmas and school holiday takings will tide them over, but it is at this time they will rely on local support. So if you want services to stay in town, if you want people to have time to coach your child’s soccer team, sponsor the school fete, donate to raffles and prizes for various local causes, remember that these businesses are relying on you for your support too. Rather than heading down the coast to shop, check out what is in the local clothing and gift shops. Instead of going to the larger chain hardware stores, drop into Canungra Hardware and see if they can help. Visit local attractions like the Lamington National Park and Mountview Alpaca Farm. Take the opportunity to see what your town has to offer and support the people and businesses who are supporting you!

Dear Editor, I wish to advise the Canungra community that after 10 years teaching at Canungra State School I have decided to take up a position at McAuley College, Beaudesert, in 2019. This was not an easy decision to make as the Canungra State School has been important part of my life for many years, firstly as a student in the 1970s, and for the last 10 years as a parent and teacher. I would like to thank everyone in the school community for their friendship and support during my time at the school. I would also like to apologise to those students and their families who were expecting me as their teacher this year. I wish you all the best for Year 6 and beyond. Perhaps I may even see some of you at McAuley College in the future! Kind regards, Steve Moriarty

Scenic Horse & Carriage Co

Stephen Pack and Chris Ward driving through Canungra

Heads turned as Scenic Horse & Carriage Co took their new carriage out for a training run through Canungra in January. Owned by Jen Pack and Chris Ward, the company has been training the horses for the last five months and have started bringing the carriage into town as preparation for carriage rides at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards and special events. Jen said the carriage is fitted with disk brakes, hand brake, indicators and is road compliant. There is a roof canopy and side panels for hot or wet weather. “The carriage was custom made in Poland to meet our requirements for the size of the horses and number of passengers,” said Jenny, “Chris and I designed it from scratch including the paint colour, seats and details.” “Riding in a horse drawn vehicle brings back memories of a simpler life! It is a great way to unwind and give the kids a little taste of the past,” she said. Scenic Horse & Carriage Co has three carriages in total with a white wedding carriage currently under restoration which should be ready for the 2019 wedding season. Jenny and Chris are currently training a black Friesian horse for this carriage which will look magnificent! Carriages are available for private bookings for weddings, events and private trips (up to one hour) and can accommodate up to six adults or four children and four adults. The Informed Conveyancing team: Rochelle Armstrong, Suzanne Roberts, Joanne Millett, Cliff Kroesen and Hailey Lilley.

Keeping Informed

Informed Conveyancing has been providing legal expertise since Suzanne Roberts established the business in 2009. Over the past 10 years it has grown to a staff of five, with Lawyer Cliff Kroesen recently taking over ownership of the business. Originally from Beaudesert where he also owns Kroesen and Co Lawyers, Cliff specialises in wills and estates, criminal and traffic matters, family property law and commercial litigation. Cliff also has a practice in Railway Street, Southport and is able to offer clients the convenience of seeing them in any of the three locations. Prior to studying law, Cliff studied Animal Nutrition at Gatton College and worked in this area for several years before changing careers. After graduating in Law he worked in general practice in both city and country areas before specialising in litigation and dispute resolution. He opened the Southport practice in 2015 and the Beaudesert practice in 2016. Cliff says laws today change so rapidly and are so numerous that even good lawyers need to be diligent in order to stay across them. Cliff and his team aim to help clients through their legal issues as simply as possible. “We aim to offer solutions to our client’s legal problems in clear plain language,” said Cliff. Suzanne, Rochelle, Hailey and Joanne are all staying on and will continue to provide Informed Conveyancing’s clients with the same friendly and efficient service. The practice will continue to offer conveyancing services for clients locally, around Australia and overseas. “Having Cliff here means we have been able to expand the range of services offered in Canungra,” said Suzanne, “As well as continue to offer our existing clients the services they have come to expect from us. We have always been a boutique firm that offers personalised service. We are not a high volume impersonal conveyancing firm and so we pride ourselves on being approachable and knowledgeable.” Two members of staff are also available for Justice of the Peace services every day. Informed Conveyancing is open five days a week, Monday to Friday, at 27 Christie Street, Canungra. For appointments or enquiries phone 5543 4996.

An Apple a Day Advice from Dr Dave Dr David Christensen, Canungra Valley Medical

Starting School

When it comes to primary school readiness, academic skills are significant but developing one’s social sills and emotional competence is important. Skills that help may make the transition to school easier for your child include: • Can follow a routine, • Interact positively with peers, • Sit and listen during group time, • Be able to sit relatively still and concentrate for a period of time. Early education, which includes childcare and preschool or kindergarten, provide children with the skills and confidence to start school. Adequate sleep is vital for school - it’s essential for both good behaviour and concentration. The early days of school can also be exhausting, so good sleep habits should be started in the weeks before school. It is helpful for children to be able to use the toilet independently by the time they start school. Supervise practice using public toilets and explain that at school there are separate toilets for girls and boys.

High

The transition from primary school to high school is significant. For kids who don’t stay at the same school, it means a new environment, new friendship groups, new routines and new ways of thinking and learning. Even the most organised kids can find it hard to keep on top of their books, materials and other belongings. Fostering independence is closely tied to organisation. Taking time to help your child create a dedicated place at home to do high school homework and assignments encourages self-reliance and responsibility.

Garden Essentials Now in Canungra

Every good gardener knows how important it is to get good advice, healthy plants and great fertiliser in the garden, especially in the current hot conditions. Another essential for plant health is native bees. Native bees are a vital part of the Australian bush and are important pollinators of Australia’s unique flora. Canungra is now fortunate to have a native bee demonstration garden and nursery, run by Alex Griffiths. Alex was one of the driving forces behind the Canungra Village Garden Project which established the Canungra Community Garden. A self-confessed ‘bee geek’, Alex has created a beautiful space behind OWL Wholefoods where she is selling a range of plants which attract native bees as well as native bee hives. She has named the garden “Little Bee’s Secret Garden’. Alex can also help with information about attracting native bees to the garden and their importance in our eco-system. One of the major benefits of some native bees when compared to the European honey bee is the ability of some species to ‘buzz pollinate’ crops. Blue-banded bees (Amegilla spp.) are Australian native buzz pollinators that have been shown to effectively pollinate glasshouse tomatoes. This specialised process involves bees transferring vibrations through their body via rapid contraction of their indirect flight muscles, releasing pollen. Buzz pollination is critical for the production of some fruits. Further research may also demonstrate a usefulness of native buzz pollinating bees in other field-grown, or other glasshouse crops such as melons, pumpkins, capsicums, chillies and eggplants. Complementing Little Bee’s Secret Garden, Mark Stollznow has opened Canungra Mower & Garden Centre next to the demonstration garden.

Alex Griffiths in Little Bee’s Secret Garden

Canungra Mower and Garden Centre offers servicing and repairs for all mowers and outdoor equipment from ride on mowers to chainsaws and everything in between. They also stock a range of organic fertilisers and a range of seedlings, fruit trees and other gardening supplies.

Little Bee’s Secret Garden located on the corner of Lawton Lane and Kidston Street and is open Wednesday to Friday from 9am to 4pm and weekends from 9am to 2pm. For enquiries about Canungra Mower & Garden Centre, call Mark on 0438 970 270.

Rural

Aid

Rural Aid has announced an influx in hay deliveries to drought-affected NSW as blistering conditions are forecast to continue throughout 2019. The NSW Department of Primary Industries’ (DPI) recently confirmed that help is desperately needed as large parts of western and central NSW remained in drought or intense drought categories of the NSW monitoring framework, despite some isolated storms providing some relief throughout December. CEO of Rural Aid, Charles Alder, said the NSW DPI report reinforced the feedback that Rural Aid has been receiving from farmers across NSW over the past few months. “Over 1,700 farmers in NSW registered for assistance in the last quarter of 2018 and our charity has received almost 70 applications for assistance in the first week of 2019,” Mr Alder said. “Rural Aid has commenced hay and water deliveries to many of the areas impacted, particularly in Western NSW.” “In the last four months Rural Aid delivered over 21,045 tonnes of hay to drought affected areas of NSW and QLD. With 915 trailers transporting over 30,000 bales.”

Rural communities are still in desperate need

“We cannot be complacent in thinking this drought will go away anytime soon, so we ask all Australians to continue to support our rural communities.” The Bureau of Meteorology confirmed that 2018 was Australia’s third-hottest year on record, with rainfall down 11 per cent on average consequently culminating in “severe drought” in the second half of 2018 in large parts of Australia.

The Canungra Times - February 2019

As the long-term weather forecasts predict a torturous summer, Rural Aid’s primary focus is to support rural communities by delivering as much assistance as possible each week across New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia. For more information on Rural Aid’s upcoming projects and how you can support farmers and rural communities visit www.ruralaid. org.au

Ask the Physio: Bursitis of the Hips

The muscles surrounding your hips keep your pelvis level and control your hip joints. They are organised in layers, and the deeper muscles are separated from the outer muscles by sheets of connective tissue, to allow easy gliding. Certain points in your body are more prone to experiencing tension and friction during movement. For this your body is scattered with tiny sacs of fluid, or Bursae, which release a natural lubricant. Occasionally these become irritated and painful especially over the greater trochanter, the bony part of your outer hip. If you’re unlucky enough to have trochanteric bursitis you’ll experience a pain on the outside of your hip, which may radiate over your buttocks down to your knee. You will feel it when lying on that side as well as when you get up from sitting. The most common cause of this is a combination of faulty biomechanics and overuse. If you have great posture, control and strength everything moves smoothly. When you have poor biomechanics, some structures have to work harder to compensate and are put under more stress, potentially leading to irritation. Some things that contribute to poor biomechanics around the hip are weak, muscles, tight muscles, flat feet with unsupportive

Trochanteric Bursitis

footwear, difference in leg length and scoliosis. These can all lead to irritation of the bursa around the hip. Some things that contribute to poor biomechanics around the hip are weak or tight muscles, flat feet with unsupportive footwear, difference in leg length and spinal scoliosis. These can all lead to irritation of this bursa.

How Can Physio Help?

As there are many other conditions that can cause pain at the outer hip, correct diagnosis is essential. Once diagnosis is confirmed, the first phase of treatment is to reduce the pain and irritation and then treat the biomechanics to stop the irritation.

This can be done with Muscle Release Techniques; Spinal Manipulation; Laser Therapy; Interferential Therapy; Ultrasound Therapy, Acupuncture; fitting you with Orthotics and helping you to improve your posture. Your physiotherapist will evaluate the causes of the irritation and prescribe a suitable treatment program to change your biomechanics. Serious cases can be treated with a corticosteroid injection or even surgery, but with thorough physiotherapy treatment you can usually get back into action within six weeks.

MOTORING

Creek Crossing MU-X Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au The Isuzu MU-X first hit Australian shores at the end of 2013 and has taken the familysized SUV market to new boundaries. As a real 4WD, the MU-X can be used as an everyday driver before it can smoothly transfer into a go anywhere adventure vehicle with the only thing stopping you being your imagination. The styling comes from its well know cousin, the D-Max, and when looking from the front it is very muscular with flared wheel arches, high nose and a wide stance; yet is easy to drive despite its size. Inside the LS-T the first thing you notice is the touch-screen in the dash. This has a satellite navigation system with live traffic updates, six speakers, iPod and Bluetooth phone connectivity. LS-T provides an unparalleled entertainment with an additional two “Sky Sound” roof-mounted speakers and 10-inch screen. The leather-appointed interior, climate control air conditioning, reverse camera DVD entertainment makes this feel that little bit classy. Isuzu UTE made life easy on themselves by optimising most of the same running gear as the D-Max. The 3.0 litre turbo-diesel power-plant has had its maximum torque output increased to 430Nm from 380Nm. A newly designed differential has also been introduced.

The automatic transmission has been improved a great deal from the previous model. The new 6-Speed with “lock-up” torque converter provides a more efficient gear selection to suit a wide variety of driving conditions and includes the adaptive-learning function. Towing with the MU-X is never going to be a hassle as the LS-T can handle 3-tonne when the trailer is braked. The LS-T 4x4 is the top of the range and has all of the features you require. When heading off road, the MU-X has a number of under body protection areas to protect the engine sump and transfer case. The MU-X

offers 230mm of ground-clearance and a 24 degree approach angle. Isuzu Ute say that the automatic 4WD averages 8.3 litres per 100km on a combined cycle. We never got that high and stayed in the sevens. MU-X 4x4 LS-T 7 Seat Auto costs $52,990 drive away. Huebner Motors currently have a 2018 Isuzu plate clearance with competitive finance available. Owl, possum, playtypus and kangaroo in the Canungra School of Arts Hall

Canungra’sHistory - The Owl in the Hall By Joyce Libke The owl, kangaroo, platypus and possum and lizard were part of the decorations for a Ball held on Saturday 7th July 1956 to open the newly built Canungra School of Arts Hall. Some people commented that, no matter where they were in teh hall, the owl was watching them! Back then the owl was where the clock is now and the other four were on the pillars beside the dance floor.

Page 28

These pictures, painted on thick, rough cardboard using indian ink, white shoe cleaner and poster paint, were the work of Joyce Curtis, Assistant Teacher at Canungra State School. They were not original, being enlarged illustrations from chidren’s story books, ie kangaroo and lizard from May Gibbs’ ‘Snugglepot and Cuddlepie, the platypus from Leslie Reeves’ ‘Shy, the Platypus’, possum from ‘Digit Dick

and the Tasmanian Devil’ also by Leslie Reeves; and the owl from Robbi’s Trip to Fairyland by Phyllis Johnston. This latter book still, in 2019, has the pencil lines on the owl, used to guide the enlargement. The cardboard was very coarse and the drawing pins and tacks used to secure them to the pillars (and later the walls) gradually disintegrated the card and they were taken down and stored under the stage. Some years down the track the ‘Junior

Farmers’ retrieved them for one of their dances, putting the possum and the kangaroo on the wall in front of the rest rooms and the platypus and owl either side of the clock above the front entrance. In 2009 the edges of the card had become so fragile that Trish and Allen Hansen used old palings as frames to attach them firmly to the wall. The owl still watches everyone in the hall some 63 years on.

WOULD YOU BE READY?

Would you and your household be ready in the event of a natural disaster? That is the question we must all ask ourselves! This simple guide can be downloaded on www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/disaster-preparedness or you will find a copy at your local library or Customer Contact Centre. With the wind event and widespread power outages just before Christmas, a number of residents were taken by surprise, especially in areas where they rely on electric pumps for their water supply. There are ways to manage in the event of a more lengthy power outage but you need to be prepared.

NEW BUSINESSES IN CANUNGRA

Welcome to the two new business ventures that have opened in Canungra on the corner of Lawton Lane and Kidston St - Little Bee & Me and Canungra Mower and Garden Centre. Little Bee & Me is a nursery and native bee demonstration and education garden established with a view to promoting these very valuable but unappreciated pollinators of native plants. Canungra Mower and Garden Centre brings a much needed mower repair and service business to our region but also the opportunity to buy locally grown plants and seedlings and other garden products.

BUSINESS EXCELLENCE AWARDS 2019

Turning Canungra Pink was started by a local resident in 2011, herself a Breast Cancer Survivor. Since then it has become a month long event, decorating the town in pink for awareness and raising money throughout businesses and community events all run by volunteers. Its a great effort for a small town! Funds raised are then donated both to Cancer Council Queensland and to “PINK ASSIST” which is a fund created by The Canungra Chamber of Commerce and used to provide support directly to our local families dealing with ongoing Cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation). PINK ASSIST offers vouchers to assist local patients with purchases such as pharmaceuticals, fuel, house cleaning, lawn mowing, basic mechanical expenses plus some other individual needs that may arise whilst undergoing treatment including hospital parking fees. Contact one of your local committee members to see if you or someone you know might be eligible for this assistance.

Business owners have until 18th February to nominate their business in this prestigious awards program. There are seven categories to choose from, including Trainee/Apprentice of the Year, and if you need further advice the Economic Development Officer is happy to talk with you on 5540 5111.

CONTACT ME

I am always available to talk with residents on 5540 5403 or 0407 630 052 or email virginia.w@scenicrim.qld.gov.au. I am at the Canungra Library on the second Saturday of the month, the next Saturday being 9th February.

AWL Seniors Pet Support

The Animal Welfare League QLD’s Golden Hearts™ Seniors Pet Support Program is a unique program to support people 65 and older with pet ownership. It is free to join and supports a senior-aged person through pet ownership whether they adopted their pet from the AWL or not. Golden Hearts™ supports its members with emergency foster care of their pet if they have to go into hospital. Members can also receive 50% off annual vaccinations through AWL Community Vet Clinics, plus 10% off everything else. There is also discounted pet grooming and a pet-matching service if you don’t have a pet. The Program also supports older people who need to transition into an aged-care facility that does not allow pets. Animal Welfare League Qld understands this is a very difficult time and offers a free surrender of a person’s beloved pet and try and match it with a loving new home in a similar environment to what it had. Golden Hearts™ also has annual social events where members get to enjoy the company of like-minded people.

Some of the most loved birds of the Australian bush are the Fairy-wrens. South-east Queensland is home to several species with the most conspicuous being the Red-backed Fairy-wren. Male birds of the species are easily recognised by their fiery red back and rump and black body. The spectacularly coloured male cannot be confused with any other Fairy-wren species. Females and juvenile are a drab brown colour and careful observations must be made to identify them from other female/juvenile Fairywren species. These birds are often seen in pairs or small families and are quite vocal when interacting with each other. Around human dwellings, these small birds can become bold and easy to see. Red-backed Fairy-wrens are seen in habitat where there is tall grass. This can include paddocks, watercourses, gardens, open woodlands, low scrubs and Spinifex. The range of the Red-backed Fairy-wren extends through New South Wales, Queensland, the Top End of the Northern Territory and the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Red-backed Fairy-wrens are common throughout their distribution in Australia. These birds can be prolific breeders and build a small, round shaped nest, which is placed low down in grass or shrubs. The season that the birds breed depends on where they are located in Australia and in arid areas, the birds may breed after rain. Around Canungra, the best places to see Red-backed Fairywrens are open paddocks with tall grass, grassy road verges and tall grasses along watercourses. Learning their call, also helps to pinpoint these small birds. Though not as bold as the Superb Fairy-wren, one usually knows when a family is located when the beautiful male appears. These petite birds never cease to amaze me with their beauty and vibrance. They are amongst the most beautiful and loved of all Australian birds and I hope that I continue to observe them for many years to come.

How Do I Join Golden Hearts?

You can sign up online at https://www.awlqld.com.au/goldenhearts; call or email AWL QLD and they can send an information pack in the mail, or collect one of the Golden Hearts™ booklets from any of our Rehoming Centres, Vet Clinics or Op Shops. Call (07) 5509 9033 or email goldenhearts@awlqld.com.au to learn more. To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough More traffic on the roads, children heading off to school and many parents sighing with relief that their children are back to the normal routine associated with a school year. Yes, Christmas is well and truly over and the month of January has gone. Yes, there are Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns in the shops. We certainly are people of routine and habit but is that necessarily a bad thing? I think we all feel better knowing what is ahead of us. We like to be able to divide our days and our years according to habit, whether it be breaking up the day with meal times or planning our year according to family birthdays, holidays, seasons or work situations. What ever it is you do to plan the year ahead; will the joy of giving be part of your plan? While Rev Valerie and husband Doug are away on a well-earned break, we have had Rev Martin Hunnybun as our visiting priest. Martin has spoken about the pleasure of giving. The immediate thought that springs to mind is giving money, but there are many other ways of giving to your family, friends, community or country. Giving brings so much pleasure and appreciation to the recipient, as well as a special sense of purpose by the giver. So, what can we do to give to others? The following list may help to spark your generosity. We can all give of our time, advice, wisdom, expertise, strength, moral support, talents or simply a helping hand. But most of all we can give through hope, encouragement and love. God loves us all unconditionally and he gave himself freely to save us all. What can you give to help someone this year?

We would like to welcome our new members and look forward to sharing some great times with them out on the course. We recently had the launch of Scenic Rim Golf with a photo shoot on the 8th hole. There are exciting times ahead for golf at Canungra. An Introduction to Golf for Beginners is being run as part of the Scenic Rim Be Healthy & Active campaign. We will kick start this program on Wednesday 27th February at 9am at the Canungra Area Golf Club. This is a great opportunity to come out and give golf a go – as well as have some fun and enjoy a cuppa afterwards. Please contact either Gael (0487 665 689) or Kim (0417 775 741) to book your spot. Our Ladies will resume their Fixture program on Tuesday 5th February with a nine hole event followed by some serious morning tea and a catch up. Memberships are available, social groups and individuals are welcome, phone 5543 4620 for all enquiries.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby We are rather hoping to see a few new faces from our ever and rapidly expanding community at some of our meetings. As the Rural Fire Brigade have their meetings on the same night and we don’t want to stop from anyone joining that fine and much needed organisation, we have moved our meeting as of February to the third Monday of the month - still at 7pm. Please feel free to pop in and see what its all about; don’t be nervous, the AGM is not until April (then be nervous !!!!!). It would be good to have more than about four people at a meeting and this facility could be so much more if there were more people involved. No major tasks but sometimes the same couple of folk get a bit ‘over it’!! The team we have is a great one but many hands make light work! The President is technologically inept so any help in that department would be appreciated! Tennis courts are our big gig for this year with a new payment/booking/locking system in the pipeline as well as a ‘hitting’ wall. We would like to get back into some kiddies / youth discos too, now that we have a new fandangled machine.
