Prospectus Brings Community Bank® Another Step Closer
There was a buzz at The Outpost Cafe on the night of 20th January, and if it weren’t for the Bendigo Bank marketing material adorning the premises, it could easily have been a birthday or family reunion taking place. It was the launch of the Canungra & District Community Bank® prospectus that had the group of invited guests so excited. Most of the guests were people who had pledged to purchase shares in the community enterprise, as well as the ten volunteer directors of the board and members of Bendigo Bank management. Deputy Mayor Virginia West, Mayor John Brent and state Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause were also in attendance. They are highly supportive of the project which aims to bring full banking services back to the Canungra, Beechmont and Tamborine district using the community banking model that has been a success throughout more than 300 communities right across Australia. Director for Canungra & District Community Bank®, David Baker, said “A community bank is unique in that it returns 100% of the profits back to the community by way of grants, donations and scholarships to their local community, sporting and charitable groups, as well as dividends to those who own shares in the public company formed to establish the bank branch”. In excess of 80 attendees listened to speeches from the Chairman of the
Members of the Board of Directors at the Prospectus Launch
Board Janine Rockliff, Cr Virginia West and Bendigo Bank Regional Manager Mark Lally which were greeted enthusiastically and resulted in 40 applications for the purchase of shares being received that very night. “Many people commented to me on the level of enthusiasm and community spirit evident in the room that night which is heartening indeed,”said David. Mark said the community has driven the campaign for the bank and it is a credit to the community of Canungra that they can see the widespread benefits and have shown great support. “I can see from the vibe in the room how excited people are about this
project and what it will do for the town,” said Mark. David said the share offer is open for a limited time only. The board is hopeful that the community will raise the minimum amount of $790,000 by the end of March in order for the branch to proceed. The current amount of shares sold is now over $200,000, with $150,000 sold on the night of the launch. David said anyone who is interested in reading the ASIC approved prospectus or in buying shares in this community enterprise can email him da.baker@ bigpond.com with contact details and he will send one by either post or email.

DAY AWARDS
Special Day For Australia Day Award Winners
More than three hundred guests attended the Scenic Rim Australia Day Awards at The Centre on Friday 22nd January, followed by the customary Australia Day citizenship ceremony. Barry Day of Canungra was presented with the Citizen of the Year Award for his contribution to the Canungra School of Arts Hall where his acquiring of monies from local, community and government funding sources enabled a myriad of projects to come to fruition for the benefit of the Canungra and broader community. “Once again it was a great pleasure to honour the hardworking members of our community and to have them receive their awards in front of such a large crowd including their family and friends was very rewarding,” Cr West said.
“I congratulate all winners and nominees for their outstanding achievements.” The Awards highlight the unsung heroes and groups in our community
who make a difference to the Scenic Rim through personal, sporting and cultural achievements, and for being role models to others.
Citizen of the Year: Barry Day (Canungra)
Barry Day was honoured for his service to the Canungra community as the 2016 Scenic Rim Citizen of the Year. Barry’s ongoing contribution to the Canungra School of Arts Hall over the past five years through leveraging funding from local, community and government sources has enabled a myriad of projects to come to fruition which has supported the hall as a critical asset for the Canungra community. Projects included the redevelopment of the façade, a total renovation of the
hall infrastructure and upgrades to the amenities including access ramps and panic safety doors. Barry also developed and maintained the Hall’s web site and bookings, giving his time freely to assist with enquiries for hall hire. Barry said he was very humbled by the Award. He thanked his wife Janelle for being a great support and very understanding of the commitment he made to this voluntary position.

SCENIC RIM AUSTRALIA Mayor’s Award: Turn Canungra Pink for October
This event began seven years ago when Cafe Metz owner Di Crooks wanted to raise funds for the breast cancer research. Breeze FM became involved to promote the event and for the past two years the Canungra Chamber of Commerce has encouraged all the businesses and community organisations in Canungra to turn the town pink. This altruistic community event is aimed at raising awareness and funding to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. The event has united Canungra together with most businesses sporting pink decorations, shop fronts and produce, and community groups hosting a myriad of pink-themed events. Every business in town was involved either by decorating their shop front or running a fundraising event or raffle. Community organisations such as the Canungra Bowls Club, Beechmont Tennis Club, Canungra Area Golf Club, Canungra Markets and even the Canungra State School got behind the event.
In this small town, everyone seems to know someone who has been affected by cancer. The month’s activities culminated in a dinner at Canungra Showground organised by Di and her staff which was attended by over 120 people.
Senior Cultural Award Barbara Lassiter (Tamborine Mountain)
Barbara has been an active volunteer in a number of community organisations using her varied talents to develop the cultural life of the Scenic Rim. Her contributions to the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra, the Tamborine Mountain Little Theatre, the Make a Wish Foundation Christmas in July event and a national lobbying group for returned Australian immigrants have been varied and sustained, drawing upon her
professional skills for the benefit of the wider community.
Senior Citizen of the Year Dinah Buchanan (Lamington)
At 84 years of age, Dinah’s drive to help others still burns strong. Her community involvements began with the establishment of Blue Nurses in the district and running a children’s club at Hillview in the 1970s. Page 6
Dinah is an active member of the CWA, knitting clothes for premature babies and items for Wongaburra residents. She assists in the running of Car Club stalls and catering, and is an active member of the Lamington Church. The Canungra Times February 2016
Chamber of Commerce members also decorated the town with pink ribbons, flags and signage. In 2015 and 2014 a total of $20,000 was raised each year towards the cause and donated to the Cancer Council.
Young Citizen of the Year - Kyle Wenzel (Roadvale)
Kyle Wenzel, School Captain of Boonah State High School, is a high achiever in both the sporting and academic realms. He was awarded the Caltex All Rounder Award, the ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Award, most valuable player for futsal and soccer and was also a winner of the prestigious Pierre De Coubertin Award. He has also represented his school at district levels for various sports. In addition to his academic and sporting achievements, Kyle was also a member of his school musical.
DAY AWARDS Community Event of the Year Springtime on the Mountain 2015 (Tamborine Mountain)
Junior Cultural Award Robert Matthews (Milbong)
Organised by the Tamborine Mountain Garden Club, Springtime on the Mountain Open Gardens festival is an annual event to raise funds for the maintenance and continuing upgrade of the Tamborine Mountain Botanic Gardens. In 2015, the event attracted more than 3000 visitors to the Mountain over the three days, educating and entertaining visitors about the joys of gardening and highlighting Tamborine Mountain in the Scenic Rim. This event is believed to be the longest running annual garden event of its kind in south east Queensland.
Robert is a very active member of the Fassifern Historical Society, especially with research and celebratory events. His unstinting efforts for the Premier’s ANZAC Competition earned him a place on the team to Gallipoli. He was then selected to assume one of fifteen spots, out of 70, to present an installation at the State Library of Queensland.
Junior Sports Award Benjamin Presser (North Tamborine)
Ben’s sporting achievements extend over a number of sports including AFL, Surf Lifesaving, triathlons and athletics. He received the Griffith University School Sports Excellence Award in 2015 and was twice a member of the Gold Coast Suns AFL Elite Academy Squad. He is a competent member of the Southport Sharks AFL Club and was the sports house captain at Tamborine Mountain State High School last year. Ben also ran and coordinated the TMSHS Elite cross-country training squad in 2015.

Restocking our Waterways
Over 3,300 Mary River Cod fingerlings were released into local waterways on Sunday 3rd January. Volunteers Kevin and Barbara Haack, and Paul and Virginia West released over 300 fingerlings in several locations along the Canungra Creek. Along with other members of Logan and Albert Fish Management Association (LAFMA), they release fingerlings in the Logan River, Wyaralong Dam and Running Creek. LAFMA Secretary, Lloyd Willmann said fresh water cod were once abundant in the Mary, Brisbane, Stanley and the Logan-Albert River systems. Cod lived in the Canungra Creek 40 years ago, however only the introduced Mary River Cod can be seen in the Creek today. The fingerlings were purchased by LAFMA, funded by carp eradication competitions at Wyaralong Dam and barbecues at Bunnings stores. The 2016 Wyaralong Dam Carp/Tilapia Eradication Competition is on Saturday 27th February. Fishing permits are not required and you can fish from the bank, canoe, kayak or boat; however outboard motors are not permitted on the dam. For entry forms and more information visit their web site www.lafmo.org. Kevin Haack releases Mary River Cod fingerlings into Canungra Creek at Geiger Road. Photo: Barbara Haack.

Tom
Sharp
Running
for
Mayor
Beechmont resident Tom Sharp will run for Mayor of Scenic Rim Regional Council at the Local Government elections on 19th March. Tom was born in Beaudesert in 1966 and spent his early years on the family farm at Beechmont. After completing his education with five years at boarding school, he worked in the finance industry, starting out with Paul Morgan in 1986 as a Floor Operator on the Brisbane Stock Exchange, he then moved to Sydney to work for English firms Barclays Bank and Cazenove Securities in stockbroking and funds management. In 1998 he purchased land on Beechmont and returned to live there in 2013. Tom believes his years of broking and finance have equipped him well in his understanding of public and private operations of finance, management and administration. The Sharp family background is strongly oriented towards community service and Local Government. His Great-Great Grandfather was Chairman of The Goolman Area Divisional Board and subsequently elected as Chairman of the Normanby Shire (based at Harrisville) and his Great Grandfather also served on the Normanby Shire as a councillor. Tom’s Great Grandfather, Grandfather and Father were all heavily involved in Tamborine and Beaudesert Shire Councils from 1922 to 1993. Tom is committed to creating a region which provides employment opportunities for the present and future and restricting the costs carried by residents to a manageable and affordable level. He is concerned about the current situation which has seen his rate bill rise by a factor of three since the formation of the Scenic Rim Regional Council in 2008, coupled with a reduction in service. Tom Sharp, if elected, is dedicated to the job of leading council and driving change that will: 1. Stop the rate gouge. 2. Force responsibility for the management and running of council on the elected representatives who have been elected by the people of this region for the people of this region. 3. Bring to the table key initiatives that will bring sustainable growth, value add jobs for all throughout the entire region. 4. Bring back the basic services that the people expect and the ethos and ethics that the people deserve.
Earthy Delights’ new owners - Paul and Shona Kraayvanger
They’re Back in Business!
If the new owners of Earthy Delights cafe look familiar, it’s probably because they are. Former Canungra News owners, Paul and Shona Kraayvanger, said they are enjoying being back in town after four years pursuing other career interests. Shona said although they intend to change the business name to ‘Canungra Hub’ they will keep the popular menu that Gunther and Lisa developed. “We want to keep the healthy, home cooked meals, salads and gluten free range that exists at Earthy Delights but meat has been introduced to the menu already, where it has been vegetarian in the past,” said Shona. “We are both enjoying being back in town again and we would like to thank Gunther and Lisa who started Earthy Delights two years ago. They created a wonderful business and we are very grateful to them for the support they have given us during the handover stage,” she said. Earthy Delights is open seven days a week.

Steve Moriarty Promises More From Council
Steve Moriarty of Canungra believes it is time for change in Scenic Rim Regional Council and he is the man to deliver it! Standing for election in Division 3 at the upcoming local government elections on 19th March, Steve said his goal is to give residents better service and value for money. “In recent years we have seen Council introduce rate rises and new fees and charges, yet at the same time the delivery of services has dropped alarmingly,” he said. Steve is Scenic Rim “born and bred”. The second son of Canungra identities Pam and the late Richard “Dick” Moriarty, he was born in Beaudesert Hospital in 1966. He completed his schooling at Canungra Primary and Beaudesert State High Schools. He currently lives with his daughters, Heather, 13, and Sophie, 10, at the family farm on Canungra Creek. The property was purchased by his grandfather, Les Gittins, a former Beaudesert Shire Councillor, more than 60 years ago. Steve was named the Beaudesert Shire Australia Day young citizen of the year in 1984. He was the Health and
Division 3 Candidate, Steve Moriarty
Physical Education head of department at Beaudesert State High School before becoming Dean of Students at St Andrews Lutheran College at Tallebudgera. A teacher at Canungra Primary School for the past seven years, he has degrees in Human Movement Studies (Ed), Business (Accounting) and completed a Master of Education in 2013. Steve was President of Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre Inc from 2008 until 2013 and counts the repayment of a $40,000 council loan as a key achievement. Improvements during his
time as President included resurfacing the tennis courts, upgrading the cricket practice nets, and the installation of a new cricket pitch, children’s playground and basketball half-court. He coordinated the Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year awards and was MC at the Canungra Christmas Carols for many years. Steve has worked as a ring steward at Canungra Show and is a leader of the Canungra Youth Group that meets fortnightly. As the Beaudesert District Uniting Church Council Chairman, he led the introduction of a new financial model to secure the church’s future in the region. A dedicated family man, Steve enjoys spending time with his daughters and is a self-confessed ‘netball Dad!’ He said the Scenic Rim’s potential was exciting. “We are within an hour of Brisbane, Ipswich and the Gold Coast, the fastest growing area in the nation. The potential for this region is huge. We need leaders with a vision for the Scenic Rim and the drive to get things done. Change is essential if the Scenic Rim is to reach its full potential!”
Local Government Elections - Scenic Rim Regional Council Saturday 19th March 2016 Vote 1 Steve Moriarty for Councillor, Division 3 Steve stands for responsibility, accountability and transparency in local government and will work hard to ensure ratepayers get more ‘bang for their buck’! Mayor John Brent to Stand for Re-election in Scenic Rim
Scenic Rim Mayor John Brent has announced he will stand for re-election in the upcoming council election, declaring, “The job isn’t finished!” Mayor Brent, who as former mayor of the Boonah Shire Council was elected eight years ago to lead the amalgamated Scenic Rim Regional Council, said he has delivered economic growth and jobs across the region but still had a great vision for the future. “I have delivered on my commitments which include the Beaudesert bypass, the first $30 million development of the Bromelton Industrial park with 125 initial jobs, new bridges, upgraded roads and new funding for parks and sporting facilities,” he said. He noted that a leading economist recently rated the Scenic Rim town of Beaudesert as the “best place in
Australia for residential investment”. “These things don’t happen by accident. We’ve turned this council and region around, from being officially labelled ‘financially weak’ to ‘financially strong’.” However he said there is “so much more to do to make Scenic Rim even greater”. “This is already the best place in the world to live but
we are on the brink of major new projects that will bring even greater prosperity and more jobs to our region, which in turn will enhance the lifestyle of our residents. “My message to voters is that now is not the time to change course. Let’s keep on track and continue the journey together.” Mayor Brent said he believed his experience and
proven leadership would continue to benefit the region. “I was born, raised and have always lived in the Scenic Rim, and I’ve been an advocate for our region across South East Queensland and Australia. I’m honoured to be able to say that I have friends and associates across the political and business spectrum, and this helps our region to attract the right development and investment.” The mayor said that this is not the time to experiment with people who have little or no experience in local government. “I don’t take support for granted, however I have been overwhelmed by the number of people who have urged me to stand again and I look forward to continuing to work hard and deliver for the region,” Mayor Brent said.
Could you tell if a work colleague, friend or family member was struggling? Would you know how to help someone experiencing a mental health concern? Scenic Rim Australia Day Event
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
We need a strong Chamber of Commerce Two events in January made me realise how important it is to have a strong Chamber of Commerce in our town. The first was the launch of the Canungra & District Community Financial Group’s prospectus. The progression of the campaign from an enquiry at a Canungra Chamber of Commerce meeting two years ago, to the formation of the company which will open the Canungra & District Community Bank is a great achievement in itself. Without the Chamber, there would not have been a viable way to voice the need for the bank or a group to follow through. Special mention should be made of the four people from the Chamber who have followed on to be Directors: Janine Rockliff, Shane Stevenson, Andrew Covino and Ken Hill. Everyone on the initial steering committee and the Directors are volunteers (not people working for Bendigo Bank) who can see the benefits of having a bank in the town, and the benefit of having profits distributed to the community through grants, sponsorship and Bendigo’s Marketing Development Fund, as well as shareholder dividends when the time comes. The other event was the Scenic Rim Australia Day awards at which Canungra Turns Pink in October won the Mayor’s Award. Started by Di Crook of Cafe Metz and Breeze FM seven years ago, in the past two years the Canungra Chamber of Commerce has coordinated other events and has ‘Turned Canungra Pink for October, raising over $40,000 for the Cancer Council in 2014 and 2015. The benefits of Turning Canungra Pink have also flowed on to tourism for the town with many people from the Gold Coast and Brisbane, as well as further afield, hearing about what has happened in the town and coming out to see the little town with a big heart. It can be difficult for businesses to cooperate in today’s competitive, time-poor environment but having a strong, functional Chamber of Commerce is a great advantage to the town. We can achieve so much more when we work together towards a common goal. Having a variety of businesses and community organisations in town makes it a better place to live, work and visit! Page 14
Congratulations to all involved in organising the Scenic Rim’s Australia Day event at The Centre in Beaudesert on Friday 22 January. It was great to see (a) all the ‘new citizens’ taking the huge step of adopting Australian citizenship; and (b) the nominations and awards to so many people in our community, over a wide range of activities. What a great place the Scenic Rim is for so many community contributions, from such dedicated, passionate individuals and groups. Particular congratulations to Canungra resident Barry Day, and to the Think Pink team, on their achievements! A major omission, however, was the lack of an Acknowledgement of Country. This was the case at last year’s ceremony, as well – whereas other Scenic Rim events do have such an Acknowledgement. The Indigenous people of Australia, and the Scenic Rim in particular (where there is such a living, vital Indigenous culture) ought to be acknowledged on this day of all days in the year. We would hope the Mayor will ensure this omission is remedied next year. Yours sincerely Janis and Warrick Bailey
Response from Council:
There was not a separate Welcome to Country but Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders were recognised as Australia’s first peoples as part of the citizenship ceremony.

Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Police Station It’s been a busy start to the new year with traffic accidents on the wet roads, lost or injured bush walkers and a few cretins from Brisbane coming in to break in to houses. Can I ask everyone to take a bit more care on the roads, particularly through this storm season. We all know that the gorge road in particular gets slippery when wet, and rain is not a reason to speed up as some people seem to think. Every crash I’ve been to on the gorge road has been avoidable. Killarney Glen is attracting a crazy number of visitors of late which is creating problems, particularly with parking. There is not a lot of space available for parking so people are using any verge they can find, sometimes leaving their vehicles jutting out onto the road. Any vehicles that have been found to obstruct the traffic on the roads are being issued with on the spot fines. Should they be parked in a way that could be deemed dangerous they can be towed at the owner’s expense. Please be careful when travelling through this area so as to avoid any unwanted crash with vehicles or pedestrians. A timely reminder to look out for your neighbours. Last week the area received a visit from a small group of criminals who broke into houses on the Mountain, Boyland and attempted to do the same in Witheren. The method
Canungra Police Watch
Kilarney Glen is attracting a crazy number of visitors, causing traffic problems in the area
used is fairly straight forward with the break ins occurring during the day when people are likely to be at work. Drive up the driveway to the house, knock on the door, if there’s an answer ask for some fictitious occupant and then leave. If there’s no answer, break in and take money, car keys and easily disposed of items like jewellery and move on. They are generally in stolen, newer model cars and are well presented, or are in utes or similar wearing high viz work gear, meaning people don’t take a lot of notice of them. The offenders in this latest incident were identified and have

been arrested in NSW and Brisbane, however we can’t rule out similar offences happening in the future. Please be aware of what’s going on in your area and report any suspicious behaviour as soon as possible. It was through the timely reporting of a Witheren incident, and the descriptions provided, that we were able to identify the offenders for these matters. It is believed that these thefts were committed to fuel an addiction to the drug “ICE”. This is an insidious drug that destroys lives and communities. I have personally known people to lose families, businesses and careers after being caught up in addiction to this drug. I have recently heard reports that there is an increased use of this drug in the Canungra community. While I hope this is not the case, we don’t help people in the long term by protecting their “secret”. Early intervention is needed as addiction takes hold quickly and the downward spiral can affect not only the user, but those around them as well. Scenic Lookout Restoration Fund
Council has nominated the Hang Gliders Lookout on Main Western Road, Tamborine Mountain for a funding grant through the Scenic Lookout Restoration Fund. The Scenic Lookout Restoration Fund is a $3 million Queensland Government fund to help locals revitalize existing lookouts and encourage tourism throughout the state by improving safety, accessibility and amenity on the road network. Corporate and Community Services Committee Chair Councillor Nigel Waistell said Council’s application proposes the establishment of a parking area and a connecting path. “Following a review of the program funding guidelines, it was considered the establishment of a constructed parking lane as well as a path connecting the parking area to the lookout was a suitable project for nomination, at an estimated cost of $100,000,” Cr Waistell said. “If successful, the project will provide for improved safety and greater accessibility to the lookout for locals and visitors to the popular hang gliding site. The nomination has been endorsed by the Scenic Valleys Regional Roads and Transport Group of which Councillor Virginia West is the Vice Chair.

The Scenic Rim environment will continue to benefit with the Federal Government announcing $170,000 in funding through the 20 Million Trees Programme for a further three projects across the region. Mayor John Brent and Deputy Mayor Virginia West visited the three sites at Back Creek in Beechmont, Canungra Creek in Canungra and Il-Bogan Reserve in Beaudesert, with Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz. Mayor John Brent said the 20 Million Trees project will utilise the Green Army teams and will provide them the opportunity to gain further experience in environmental work by helping Council to plant over 15,000 trees, a strong contribution to Council's Million Trees Program. "I have met with many of the Green Army participants who enthusiastically worked on improving the local environment and I am proud to sponsor this program that provides handson experience in conservation and land management for our youth and simultaneously benefits our natural environment." He said the partnership between Council and the Federal Government, through the 20 Million Trees and the Green Army programs are another example of different levels of government working together to deliver grassroots programs which improved local communities. "The environmental works already completed by the Green Army teams have included the removal of several tonnes of invasive weeds and plants and have provided much needed rehabilitation of riparian bushland," Mayor John Brent said. The Canungra site will target weed management and revegetation with endemic species while the Back Creek project in Beechmont will target restoration of the rainforest dominated riparian zone, providing important habitat linkage to existing reserves and World Heritage Areas for rainforestdependent species. Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz said federal funding for the projects was key to helping the environment and making a strong different in the lives of participants. “Seeing the progress of Green Army participants during the last project at Canungra, seeing their feeling of worth grow and seeing them learn valuable skills on the job – showed me just how much of a difference can be made through the 20 Million Trees and Green Army programs,” he said. The Green Army projects in Beechmont, Canungra and Il-Bogan will commence from 22nd February and continue through to July with two teams of nine participants covering the three sites.

Greg Says “Time To Put Ratepayers And Residents First”
Greg Christensen will stand as a Scenic Rim Mayoral candidate in the 2016 Local Government Elections. “This is not a decision taken lightly. However after discussion with a broad cross section of people across our Scenic Rim, I believe it is time for a fresh approach to lead towards a stronger future,” said Greg. Born and raised in the Scenic Rim at Moorang in the Bremer Valley, and now living in Tarome, Greg’s family has lived and worked in the area since the 1800’s. He and his wife Denise have been married for 38 years. They have three children and are grandparents to four. After completing his trade and working in Queensland power stations for some years, Greg completed further study and moved into areas which he is passionate about: training, change, business and process improvement and leadership. His career has included more than 15 years in executive roles across agribusiness, mining, manufacturing, and fast moving consumer goods and he is now a self employed Business and Executive Coach. His related service activity has included Industry Training Boards,

Community Development Alliances, Director of a Superannuation Fund and Secondment as Director for the Office of Manufacturing in South Australia. Greg believes his commitment to the community and his experience in the public and private sector has equipped him with a strong suite of skills and perspectives that he can bring to the role of Mayor.
The Canungra Times February 2016
It has always been important to Greg to be an active part of the community wherever he lives, and across the years he has taken on a variety of roles including secretary and treasurer of the P&C at his children’s schools, coach of junior and senior soccer teams, Church Elder, youth mentor, RFS volunteer, and Board Member and supporter for a Queensland prison chaplaincy service. “Einstein famously argued that we cannot solve problems from within the same mindset that created them. A new leader is also able to bring fresh eyes and fresh thinking to find new solutions. I believe I can be that leader, bringing a different set of perspectives and different approaches to invigorate our thinking at Council,” said Greg. Greg has established a website www. gregforscenicrim.com to share information about what he stands for. “Our Scenic Rim has great opportunities and challenges before it,”said Greg. “Management alone will not see us through to our best future. It will require leadership to communicate and engage with the community to shape a stronger future,” he said.

2016 Telstra Australian Business Awards
Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause has called on the community to celebrate the success of local businesses by nominating them for the 2016 Telstra Australian Business Awards. For 24 years the national Awards program has recognised the best of Australia’s entrepreneurial spirit and the courage of small and medium business, helping them reach new levels of success. “Our local businesses, and the incredible people who run them, are central to the strength of our local economy. It’s important for us to celebrate them and continue to encourage their growth,” Jon said. “It takes an incredible amount of sacrifice and tenacity to run a business, and we see this every day in businesses across the region. Nominating is a wonderful way to recognise our local success stories.” Mr Krause said nominating a business will give them the opportunity to be recognised among Australia’s best small and medium businesses. “I encourage everyone to get behind these often unsung heroes by nominating our brilliant local businesses to show the rest of the state the excellent operations we have here in the Beaudesert Electorate.” Every business that enters the Awards also receives a free individual 70-page Business Health Check report that evaluates their business performance and provides a platform to review business strategy and plan for future growth. Anyone can nominate a brilliant business they admire, with entries open from 3rd February until 23rd March 2016 across five Award categories: • New Business Award – for businesses operating for one to three years with up to 500 employees • Micro Business Award – for businesses with five employees or less • Small Business Award – for businesses with more than five employees but less than 50 • Medium Business Award – for businesses with more than 50 employees but less than 500 • Charity Award – ACNC registered with DGR status, between one and 500 employees and an annual income of between $250,000 and $10,000,000 State and territory winners will be named at gala events later this year. The Queensland dinner and Awards will be presented on 15th July 2016. To nominate or enter the Awards, go to www.telstrabusinessawards.com or call the Telstra Australian Business Awards on 1800AWARDS for further information.

Can you help find Yogi and Diesel?
Where are Yogi and Diesel?
Yogi and Diesel are missing. The two 11 month old Labrador pups have been missing from their home on the Northern Gold Coast since 30th November last year. Yogi and Diesel’s owner, Sharon, says the dogs were on her property and were out of her sight for a few minutes and then they were gone. Despite a widespread social media search, posters up throughout the Gold Coast and Brisbane and a $2,000 reward there have been no sightings of them since. “I believe that they have been stolen and could be anywhere,” said Sharon. “I am desperate to get them home as my three children are devastated.” Sharon says Yogi and Diesel may not be together anymore and asks people to look out for them separately as well as together. Both dogs are 11 month old, microchipped, desexed male Labradors. Sharon and her family are concerned for the welfare of their dogs and would be happy to hear from anyone who has a possible sighting. Please like their facebook page ‘Help Find Yogi and Diesel’ or contact Sharon or Lee on 0421 336 619.

A Canungra Op Shop donation assisted with entertainment for Christmas Carols in the Park
Op Shop Keeps Giving To Community
Canungra Op Shop has continued its support of local community organisations and residents, returning over $10,000 to the Canungra community in 2015. Canungra Op Shop Committee member, Michelle Aldridge, said the Op Shop has been greatly blessed in 2015 by the support of the Canungra community. “We would like to say thank you to everyone who has supported us by not only shopping there, but also by their donations,” said Michelle. “We finished 2014 off with a donation to the Soccer club for $2,400 for new balls and we were especially pleased to able to start 2015 off with support to other local areas and continue that through 2015,” she said. Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre President, Shona Kraayvanger said the Moriarty Park committee is very grateful for the assistance the Op Shop gave to support the Carols in the Park in December. “It was due to the Op Shop’s generosity that we were able to have the great entertainment we had for the evening,” said Shona. “It is a real benefit for community organisations to have this kind of support from a local business,” she said. The total support for the Canungra community for 2015 was $11,750: $650 Local swim club for equipment $2,900 Care packages for local families having difficult times $1,000 Moriarty Park for new tables and gazebo’s $3,200 Local swim club for defibrillator $2,000 Christmas carol programme in the Park $2,000 Free health DVD’s and books Michelle said December was a very busy time for the Shop, which itself is a not for profit organisation. “We have some amazing volunteers - without whom we could not operate,” she said. “Two of our volunteers had milestone birthdays, both turning 80 this year - extraordinary women!! We would like to thank all of our volunteers for their efforts. We would also like to invite anyone in the community, both ladies and gentleman, who may have some time, to come and volunteer. We are stretched pretty thin at times and it would be wonderful if anyone could help. So thank you everyone - all the very best for 2016. Canungra Op Shop volunteers can help sorting donations, doing odd jobs at the shop, assisting customers and many other tasks. Training is provided and the atmosphere is friendly and social. Whether you are looking for a few hours of social interaction or some experience to help you get back into the workforce, volunteering at the Op Shop will help you and the community. Canungra Op Shop is open six days a week (closed on Saturdays) at 1/4 Lawton Lane, Canungra. Phone 5543 5533.

The 2016 Showtime Carnival on Tamborine Mountain is shaping up to be the best ever! This year the Show will be held on Saturday 19th March (local government election day for those who haven’t twigged to it). Around the grounds, there will be a stunning line up of characters and events. The Super Heroes will once again be visiting the Carnival, just to make sure that all runs smoothly. Market Lane will be humming with fabulous traders, and the Stage will play host to the Wild, Wild West Pet Parade, Tamborine’s Got Talent, a roving Calypso band, artists, and some wonderful presentation from Tamborine’s very own Terri Taylor from Tamborine Mountain Cooking School. Of course, Terri is again taking us on a culinary tour of the Scenic Rim, with the Tastes of Tamborine demonstrations and tastings. Make sure you check out the activities for the smaller members of our community – last year’s buttermilk scones are still fondly spoken of. As always, the Pavilion exhibits showcase the great talents on the Mountain. Take a chance and enter the Pavilion competitions outlined in the Tamborine Mountain Show Schedule which is available on the Show Society’s website tamboriemountainshow.com What is a Carnival without rides and side show alley? This year on of the features will be lantern making sessions for children, who will then have the opportunity to participate in a lantern parade in the early evening. Top the day off with a wonderful fireworks display! Enjoy a (responsible) drink from the bar, and have a listen to some cool blues rock supplied by Showtime Carnival on Tamborine Mountain Band. We look forward to seeing you there!

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Local Government Elections
Saturday 19th March is the Local Government Election Day in Queensland and I will be standing for re-election for Division 3. It has been a privilege to represent the residents of Division 3 for the past four years (and the previous four year term) as together we have built a solid financial base for the Scenic Rim and the hard work and negotiations of years passed are finally becoming a reality. We have a very bright future ahead of us in this developing region and I think the recap below of recent announcements for the region is reflective of this.
Positive Beginning To 2016 For Scenic Rim
What a momentous beginning to 2016 for all residents in the Scenic Rim with so much positive progress towards future economic prosperity and local employment; we have waited a long time for this! The construction of SCT Logistics $30 million intermodal freight terminal at Bromelton is due to commence mid-year. This is the first project of a long term investment which will create 125 jobs initially and up to 1000 in future years. Council secured a $9.6 million Federal Government grant to facilitate this project. Over the Christmas week, the Queensland State Government announced a $3.3 million grant towards the $6.2 million water main from Beaudesert to Bromelton, to be constructed in partnership with QUU and Council. This project is another catalyst towards future development in the Bromelton State Development Area. Jobs Jump Start, an employment creating initiative launched late last year, has had a 25% uptake so far with up to 240 new jobs on the horizon at the completion of construction works. The $27.5 million Beaudesert Town Bypass is on schedule to commence construction in the second half of 2016 with the project going to tender in the coming months. Our signature event Eat Local Week has received ongoing funding of $75,000 over three years from Queensland Destination Events to support and grow this popular celebration of our agricultural and tourism businesses. A total of $525,00 in infrastructure funding has been awarded to six local sporting groups through the State Government’s Get Playing initiative. Congratulations on your success. SEQ Water announced late in 2015 the funding to build a new $4 million water treatment plant in Canungra to replace the current ageing structure and to provide capacity for future growth. Council has been successful in the Federal Government Bridges Renewal Programme with three new bridges to the value of almost $4 million. What a pleasing start to 2016. Scenic Rim Regional Council achieved financial sustainability results that are within the target ranges identified for the year ending 2014/15. This most certainly has been reflected in the confidence of other levels of government towards Council and is a tribute to Council and the community working closely together for the last eight years since the beginning of Scenic Rim.

Time Secret
“I haven’t got time!” Ever found yourself saying that instead of doing some exercise? You’re not alone. It’s probably one of the most common excuses around. I’m often asked how I find time to run a business, study, write books, keep fit and raise a family. So I thought I’d share my secret. We all have 24 hours in a day, and the fact that some people manage to fit in work, exercise, and a host of other activities a day and others don’t, is not a case of time management. You can’t manage time. Time is ticking at the same rate for everyone, it happens no matter what. What you can do is manage your tasks and activities, and get better at prioritising them. Maybe even cull a few out of your day. One of my favourite tips for managing tasks is the ‘Big Rock’ strategy. Imagine this for a minute: You have a large bucket. You also have five big rocks, 20 stones, and a bag of sand. How do you get it all to fit in the bucket? If you put the sand in first and then the stones, you’ll probably only have space for one or two big rocks. If you put the big rocks in first, then the stones will fill some gaps between the rocks. Add the sand last and it will fill all the remaining gaps between the rocks and stones. Same bucket, but you just fit way more into it! Imagine your day as the large container and decide what are the ‘big rocks’ that you want to get done in the day. What is MOST important for your health and happiness? Put them in first, either at the start of the day, or locked into your diary. Have a ‘no excuses’ policy about the big rocks. All the other smaller tasks will miraculously get done in the spare time that’s left. And if they don’t, you’ll realise they weren’t that important anyway. Try it! You’ll be amazed how much you get done, and how good you feel about your day.

Refurbishment of Memorial Tamborine Carols and Twilight Markets
Council is currently undertaking works in Graceleigh Park to refurbish the Beechmont War Memorial as part of Council’s Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative. Mayor John Brent said once finished, the $35,000 project will be a fitting commemoration to continue to honour the local lives lost at war. “The initial stage of removing the existing slate and concrete from the memorial is complete with the foundation and concrete work followed by the refurbishment of the stone mason memorial to take place in early February,” John said. Commemorating the eight local lives lost in The Great War will be eight Aurora granite pillars which will be linked by a stainless steel chain surrounding the memorial. The memorial’s slate base will utilise new Beechmont slate. Deputy Mayor Virginia West said she was happy the memorial will be completed in time for the ANZAC day commemorations. “Council has been working very closely with the Beechmont ANZAC Committee and I am glad we have been able to invest these funds into improving such an important monument to the community.” Landscaping which includes the establishment of gardens will complete the refurbishment scheduled for early March.

AWL Pets of the Month
Meet Rex! This handsome guy is looking for a family to call his own. Rex is a loveable, affectionate dude who loves to play. He’d fit in well with a family who has no small children and would love experienced owners who can put in the time and training with him. Rex is a bit exuberant around other dogs and would love to learn how to socialise properly and politely with them. He is a really intelligent dude who is eager to learn and picks up tricks quickly. He’d love an active family who will take him on walks and adventures (he walks beautifully on a lead.) Rex is an Bull cross Bull Mastiff and is only four years old, he is $250 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed.
Come and meet Whisker, a beautiful fluffy boy looking for his new loving home. He enjoys pats and head rubs. Whisker is one year old and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. He is only $99.00. When you adopt a pet through the Animal Welfare League QLD you are supporting an organisation that re-homes and cares for up to 15,000 strayed and abandoned animals a year. The AWL also has kittens looking for their forever homes. The kittens are $200 each and are all vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Exploring New Zealand’s Third Island: Stewart Island By Melissa Whitby I have spent much time travelling through New Zealand photographing birdlife and scenery. One location I was determined to get to was New Zealand’s third island: Stewart Island (Rakiura). Stewart Island’s history is a colourful one with the Maori people present on the island from the 13th Century and in the 19th Century, sealers, miners, settlers and explorers arrived. The island’s natural resources were a huge drawcard for both the Maori people and early Europeans. Today the island has a bustling community of about 400 people which is supported by tourism, conservation, aquaculture and fishing. Approximately, 85% of Stewart Island has been proclaimed as Rakiura National Park. Getting to Stewart Island is relatively easy. I flew to Invercargill where I stayed for a few days at Bushy Point Fernbirds to do some bird-watching, then caught a flight to Oban, Stewart Island. A ferry service is also available. The community at Oban township are a friendly mob and it is easy to get settled in with them at the South Sea Hotel for a beer! I chose to stay at the Stewart Island Backpackers whilst on Stewart Island and this proved to be a great experience with the lady-in-charge Vicki Coates being a wealth of knowledge and very helpful. I was on a mission to see the Stewart Island Brown Kiwi (tokoeka) in the wild. Stewart Island is one of the few places in the world where wild kiwi can be observed regularly going about their business. I was not disappointed with two very memorable encounters. One where I observed the birds feeding on a beach where Sir David Attenborough filmed the Kiwi for the Life Of Birds. The other involved some local advice and pure luck, where I had a Kiwi walk right up to my feet. I have encountered some incredible wildlife but this strange bird had me mesmerised! The native birdlife on Stewart Island is very prevalent and I was very keen to visit the open island sanctuary, Ulva Island. This small island is only a short ferry ride from Oban. Ulva Island is a predator-free island managed by the Department Of Conservation and the Ulva Island Charitable Trust. It is a birdwatcher’s paradise and is home to Brown Creeper, Tomtit, Stewart Island Robin, Bellbird, Stewart Island Weka, Stewart Island Kiwi, Yellowhead, South Island Saddleback, Kaka and Red- and YellowCrowned Parakeets. The short time I spent exploring Stewart Island was an amazing experience and I would recommend visiting over the Spring/Summer months. I hope that South Island Kaka I get back to visit it again one day!

Mars is in Scorpio, which is deepening your interests. What’s under the surface is becoming more interesting than what’s on it. The possibility of turning towards feelings that were once scary and turning them around, is becoming downright fascinating. Adapt to this change with bravado.

Relationship is your challenge du jour. The more you focus on it, the more you know that the major dilemma you are facing is that of freedom. Not only is your freedom important but it is important that you encourage those you dance with to embrace their freedom as well. Grow.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
Jupiter is in Virgo. He is retrograde. He appears to be moving backwards. This means that you need to turn around and dig into the subject of what it means to be genuinely empowered. Being a pussycat isn’t the way - but neither is narcissistic bravado. Honour the truth in your gut.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Give yourself a well-earned break. Since this is a time to lay low, give yourself all you need to be able to chill out and reflect. Perhaps you need time. Perhaps, a really gentle place. Perhaps you need good company and food. Surround yourself with all that feeds your sense of beauty.

Mars is fuelling your journey. Know he is there charging you up with high octane fuel. Give yourself plenty of avenues for expression - physical and emotional especially. If you move, you will thrive. If you don’t, you will drive yourself batty with your own energy. Embrace life.

Saturn is with you and he is not moving. He means business – and the business is growing up – as opposed to growing old. Up means up into the higher reaches of your being. It’s all very well being the rambunctious wild-child but there is even more to be gotten. Life is for learning.

News from St Luke’s
Suduko
By Di Ayscough
St Luke’s Guild has just held its Annual General Meeting to elect new office bearers for the leadership of the Church Guild. As the year develops the enthusiastic church members will again do all to ensure St Luke’s is self sufficient and maintained as an important part of Canungra. We will again have our important fund raising events during 2016, including a car boot sale and stalls in the church grounds, our annual dinner and a street stall in December. Such planning reflects the commitment we have towards St Luke’s. To those who attend, St Luke’s is a special place to worship God, meet friends, be part of the community and to serve others. Sometimes we are challenged by what we do in life. Challenges are important to develop our inner self and sense of achievement. I recently walked the Overland Track in Tasmania. A six day, 85km very challenging event. Had I known the degree of the challenge before me, I would not have believed I could succeed, but once faced with the task it was one step at a time and facing a new mountain each day. Do you ever feel the mountains ahead are too hard or the darker valleys of life are too difficult?. It is amazing what you can achieve if you do not have to face challenges alone. Through my involvement with St Luke’s, and the very helpful leadership team on my walk, I succeeded and was never alone. If you feel life presents too many difficulties and you don’t know where or who to turn to, there is always St Luke’s. You may find it is just the place to answer your needs. You are most welcome to join us.
Solution page 35
This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

He is an enthusiastic soccer player and this year was awarded Coaches Choice in his Canungra Owls Under 10 team. He is a competitive runner and whilst enjoying and doing well in all track and field events he particularly excels in shot putt. He is also a well mannered and helpful chap who is always one of the first to ask what he can do to assist at soccer and all other Moriarty Park functions and Ciaran McCabe events he attends. As the Sportsperson of the Month, Ciaran will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks.

Our full compliment of Sportspeople will be in next month’s Canungra Times and our Awards ceremony will be held at Moriarty Park at 6.30 pm on Friday 19th February. A light supper will be provided for all nominees, families and friends. Needless to say we will be running a small raffle so please bring a couple of coins to participate! Enquiries and RSVPs to Bren on bren.dalby@bigpond.com or 0414 435 919. By the way, Gabbie Wilson is actually 2015 November Sportsperson of the Month and not January 2016 as I mentioned in last month’s column. Sorry!
Sportsperson of the Month - January 2016
The January 2016 Sportsperson of the Month is Murphy Baker. Murphy has been invited to train in London at the West Ham youth academy as part of the 2016 West Ham United North American Academy Elite Player Trip held from 18th to 25th March 2016 staying on site at their football stadium . This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for an 11 year old boy to work with some of the most highly regarded youth football coaches in England. He will also have tickets to watch Chelsea versus West Ham at the historic Stamford Bridge, the week culminating with a game against the West Ham Under 12 youth team. Murphy Baker Murphy attended a West Ham regional ID camp in July 2015 with some of his fellow Canungra Owls, where he was invited to the West Ham Oceania Academy National Camp at Southport during September 2015. An invitation came later to join the North American Elite Players who had progressed through similar camps in the US. Murphy has played for the Canungra Owls Soccer Club since the Squirts program in 2010, winning Supporters Choice Awards in 2013, 2014 and 2015. He will be a fine ambassador for Canungra and it will be an incredible experience for such a young man. As the Sportsperson of the Month, Murphy will receive a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 sports store voucher kindly donated by Canungra Foodworks.

Free Yoga Classes for Ex Servicemen and Women By Keith Cogzell
Canungra Yoga and the Canungra RSL Sub Branch have teamed up to introduce the health benefits of Yoga to the veteran and ex service community. While conducting classes for serving personnel at Kokoda Barracks, Principal of Canungra Yoga, Kara Swift, received inspiring feedback about how the Yoga techniques helped the personnel physically and mentally. The physical, mental and emotional benefits of regular Yoga are now generally accepted in the medical world and Yoga is widely used in the treatment of post traumatic stress disorder. “These special classes for veterans and ex servicemen and women will be different from our general classes,” said Kara. “They will be tailored for those who may have restrictions due to past injuries or physical limitations due to age. These classes will provide an easy-going, relaxed space where veterans can learn and practice techniques which will lead to a stronger body, ease of movement and a calmer mind,” she said. Mark Pickard from Canungra RSL Sub Branch is hoping to attract veterans and ex service personnel from Scenic Rim to a free trial session on Wednesday 17th February to experience Yoga first hand. Mark took up Yoga 18 months ago to see if it would help reduce stiffness and pain in his back and legs caused by

years of PT and other physical activities both in the Army and life generally. “Only as you grow older does the reckoning truly come as the bent and worn out bits conspire to remind you of your past enthusiasm,” said Mark. “Yoga works on many levels. The cumulative effects generated by regular practice have significantly reduced my pain and rebuilt my flexibility. More importantly perhaps, it has improved my ability to cope with the root causes of mental and spiritual stress, whether they be past or present; something I wish I had known a while ago,” he said. Veterans and Ex Service Yoga is open to all who have served in the defence forces, regardless of age or physical limitations, and participants do not need to be members of the RSL to join the free trial session.
