A Small Slice of Scotland

For many years Bren and George Dalby and some like minded mates have talked about resurrecting the Burns Supper event they were involved with on the Gold Coast from 1999 til 2009 as a fundraiser for The Cancer Council. Burns Night is annually celebrated in Scotland on or around 25th January. It commemorates the life of the bard (poet) Robert Burns, who was born on 25th January 1759. The day also celebrates Burns’ contribution to Scottish culture. Burns’ best known work is “Auld Lang Syne”. Being the day before Australia Day, so soon after Christmas and just as the kids are returning to school ... George, Bren and their friends found it just all too hard. However this year they, together with that same group of great friends, pulled it together. With Moriarty Park providing the venue, Tony and Anne from Foodworks very generously donating all the food (other than the traditional haggis) ... and Gordon and Venessa Lonie from Complexions Skin Care donating all the haggis required, a terrific night of bagpipes, poetry, eating , dancing, singing and much laughter was had by all. For people not familiar with the Scottish traditions, the piping in of the haggis was a great experience, as were the traditional dances after dinner. Stu Comley entertained with a short Scottish quiz and provided the prizes ... this served as a source of more information about Scotland too! A raffle was held of course (much as you can’t have an event in Canungra without a

Kilts and kids - a small section of the people who celebrated Burns night in Canungra

quiz from Stu, you can’t have one without a raffle from Bren) and Go Ballooning kindly supplied two vouchers for Hot Air Balloon Rides! Leanne Hill was the lucky lass who scored those. Everyone from the children to the older attendees had a great night, with one 82 year old saying it was the best night she has had in ages, and some of the children asking their parents why they hadn’t been to one before! Most attendees have already expressed their desire to come again next year, and it

is hoped this will become an annual event as a fundraiser for The Cancer Council of Queensland. Just over $1000 was raised on the night and whilst there is a wee bit of tweaking and fine tuning to sort out before next year, organisers are hoping to accommodate more participants and make it a huge event. It is something quite different for most people and a lot of fun. Thanks to all who attended and to all who helped create the whole event! Book in early for next year!

Bridge Delivered

Canungra postie Tammy Hinchcliffe is one of many road users celebrating Council’s delivery of the refurbished Mollenhagen Bridge at Illinbah. The timber bridge over the Coomera River at Gray Road has been recently upgraded, lifting previous load limits, and its approaches treated with a special bitumen seal to better withstand future flooding. Council’s Capital Works Program provided for improvements to the bridge while its approaches were upgraded through Community Resilience Funding from the State Government in partnership with Council. The final finishing touches to Mollenhagen Bridge included the placement of steel plates which show the completion date of the bridge, one of 79 timber structures in the Scenic Rim’s network of 129 bridges. Marking the completion of Mollenhagen Bridge are (from left) Senior Supervisor Justin Storey, Canungra postie Tammy Hinchcliffe and Division 3 Councillor Virginia West.

Be Healthy and Active at Canungra Pool

Canungra Pool has secured funding under the Scenic Rim Regional Counci’s Be Healthy and Active Program for the ‘Trio Water Fitness’ classes. Pool Manager, Karen Nixon, said the classes are a blend of aqua aerobics, pilates and yoga. Held on Thursday mornings at 8am, the classes run for six weeks commencing 9th February and are only $5 per person. They are ideal for people wanting to start swimming or aqua aerobics and needing to build their fitness, or for people with injuries who need low-impact exercise with the feeling of weightlessness in the water. Karen also runs aqua aerobic/deep water running classes on Mondays at 6pm and Fridays at 8am at a cost of $10 per person (includes pool entry). Canungra Pool has also been acknowledged as Rackley’s Swimming’s ‘cleanest pool’. Rackley’s, who run swimming pools across South East Queensland, conduct a monthly audit of all of their pools and Canungra consistently gained the highest points for cleanliness both last swimming season and in the audits this season.

SCENIC RIM AUSTRALIA Young And The Young-At-Heart Honoured In Australia Day Awards A sprightly Meals on Wheels volunteer, a woman whose tinsel touch helped light up Beaudesert and a teenager who beat the odds to fulfill her dreams were among recipients of Council’s 2017 Australia Day Awards. Mayor Greg Christensen said the awards, announced at The Centre Beaudesert on the eve of Australia Day, are a shout-out for the quiet achievers whose year-round contribution to their communities makes the Scenic Rim such a great place to live. “This year’s nominees are of an extremely high calibre and those whose names were put forward should be proud of the outstanding contribution they have made to their communities,” he said. “It’s always a tough task to choose just one recipient for an award but this year’s high standard of nominees made the judging so much more difficult. “The awards highlight the value of volunteers and, with nominees ranging in age from eight to eighty, it’s clear that you’re never too young or too old to make a difference in your local community.” In each of the following categories the award winners are: Junior Sports Award: Caitlyn Hester (Allenview). For Caitlin, 2016 was a record-breaker. She broke a 33-year record for discus at Beaudesert State High School, and numerous other records at athletics competitions in Townsville, Emerald, Brisbane and the South Coast. Caitlin represented Australia at the Oceania Melanesian Games Regional Championships in Fiji where she was awarded a silver medal in the Under 18s group for hammer throwing. She is a member of the Beaudesert Little Athletics committee and a member of Queensland Athletics.

Senior Sports Award: Jessica LaversMcBain (Beaudesert). A martial arts instructor, Jessica has been a Queensland, Australian, New Zealand, South Pacific, Oceania and International champion across a range of martial arts disciplines. She is accomplished in judo, kudo, Brazilian jiu jitsu, Muay Thai, full contact karate and submission wrestling and has represented Australia in New Zealand, Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Algeria and Singapore. Junior Cultural Award: Taylor Murphy of North Tamborine Taylor has achieved international success, received offers from overseas dance schools and has been admitted to the Australian Conservatoire of Ballet in 2017. In ten levels of ballet examinations over 11 years, she achieved the highest grade attainable. Through her discipline and love of dance, Taylor has been an inspiration and mentor to many young girls. During 2016, she successfully balanced her own dancing

with her senior studies and teaching and mentoring younger dancers. Senior Cultural Award: Finella Loch (Beaudesert). In 2014, Finella composed a song for A-Choired Taste to perform at ANZAC Day ceremonies and, with a grant, the song was recorded and published as sheet music which is available for the wider community to use, free of charge, in ANZAC commemorations. Finella’s involvement in local theatre and music and her support for local events, such as Eat Local Week and Arts in the Olives, has helped to enrich the Scenic Rim community. Community Event of the Year: Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular (Boonah). Inaugurated in 2013 by a small but dedicated group to promote a breed of horse which played a key role in the development of south east Queensland, the Scenic Rim Clydesdale Spectacular has evolved from an equine event into a highland gathering celebrating the Scenic Rim’s Scottish heritage.

DAY AWARDS Not only has it become a signature local event, attracting more Clydesdale entries than the RNA and regional shows, it offers an insight into the region’s history through demonstrations of skills and trades of a bygone era. Young Citizen of the Year: Kaitlin Bell of Gleneagle A member of the Queensland Youth Parliament, Kaitlin won the prestigious Country to Canberra leadership competition and, despite her extensive involvement in a range of community activities, achieved an exemplary school record with high achievements in dance, drama and film and television. As Vice-Captain of Beaudesert State High School last year, Kaitlin was an inspiration to her peers. Kaitlin, who celebrates her 18th birthday the day after Australia Day, was born with a rare bone and kidney disease and has overcome adversity to achieve awards and recognition. Senior Citizen of the Year: Elsie Wood of Beaudesert Elsie may be older than many of her Meals On Wheels clients and residents at Wongaburra where she works as a volunteer, but she is young-at-heart. For more than 12 years Elsie has been a volunteer driver - using her own vehicle with no assistance - as a deliverer for Meals On Wheels. She is so dedicated that once, when she experienced car problems on her delivery route, she abandoned her vehicle and was found taking meals to her clients on foot. Elsie is also a volunteer at the Beaudesert Golf Club and an active member of the Anglican Church’s Old Friends fellowship. Mayor’s Award: Betty Pugh of Tamborine Mountain Betty Pugh has worked tirelessly for 30 years as a full-time volunteer, refusing to allow bouts of ill health to slow her down. She has provided much-needed support to drought-stricken Queensland farmers and flood victims, running garage sales and operating fortnightly market stalls to raise funds to pay for the postage of her packages of clothing and essentials for needy families. Betty’s dedication over many decades has spread the charity of Scenic Rim residents throughout Queensland.

Citizen of the Year: Finella Loch of Beaudesert Finella has walked the streets, doorknocking local businesses, and worked with schools, community groups and service clubs to encourage participation in the celebration of Christmas. She has a long history of involvement in local community theatre and music and arts and cultural events but since late 2015 has channelled her energies into the Beaudesert Community Christmas Committee to boost the town’s festive spirit. Finella’s tinsel touch could be seen throughout Beaudesert in the lead-up to Christmas and she played a leading role in lighting up the town during the festive season.

Visitors to national parks in Queensland are breathing easier with smokers needing to move 10 metres away from most visitor facilities when smoking under new restrictions. National Parks Minister Dr Steven Miles said the new restrictions applied to picnic tables and barbecues, toilet blocks, jetties and information shelters, as well as occupied camp sites. “These restrictions will protect the health and well-being of park visitors, and we hope smokers will consider their own health and the health of others and observe the new restrictions,” Dr Miles said. “We want to support people who want to stop smoking, and protect those who choose not to smoke. “While the focus will be on educating visitors about the new rules, rangers do have the power to issue on-the-spot fines of $243. “The restrictions will apply to parts of 272 national parks, including 245 formalised campgrounds and 150 day-use areas, and bush camping sites. “New no-smoking signage is being installed, with signs striking a balance between informing people and avoiding visual pollution of these natural areas. Visitors will also be reminded of the new restrictions via messages on camping tags and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service web pages,” Dr Miles said. The national park smoking restrictions are part of Queensland Health’s recent changes to the Tobacco and Other Smoking Products Act 1998, to make more public places smoke-free. Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young welcomed the start of the national park smoking restrictions. “Smoking is the single largest preventable cause of death and disease in Australia,” Dr Young said. “Even passive smoking – breathing in the smoke from other people’s cigarettes – can adversely affect your health, causing cancer and other life-threatening diseases. “Experience shows that strong smoking bans increase people’s enjoyment of smoke-free public places and provide smokers with a clear understanding of where they should not smoke. “This is one of several Queensland Health initiatives to reduce smoking rates in Queensland, limit people’s exposure to second-hand smoke and decrease the likelihood of young people taking it up. “Queensland’s smoking laws are among the toughest in the world. Smoke-free public places, coupled with quit smoking services, have resulted in Queensland’s adult daily smoking rate dropping to 12 per cent,” Dr Young said. Dr Miles said the national park restrictions were also expected to help cut down on litter, and reduce the risk of wildfires.

Shopping Local is Cool for School

Shopping locally for back to school book lists is literally cool for school with Canungra Post Office owner Cheryl Davies giving Canungra State School P&C Association a 10% rebate on all booklists purchased through the Post Office. Canungra State School booklists have been outsourced to a Gold Coast company for the past few years, but Cheryl’s rebate offer, combined with the her experience with the stationery companies has returned the service to the town. Cheryl said she spent hours preparing the book lists for Canungra State School during 2016 and made sure the school and students will benefit in the long term. A post on the Canungra State School P&C Association’s facebook page said the rebate would contribute to air conditioning in classrooms. “The P&C will receive a cheque shortly from the Canungra Post office for an amount which will go a long way to helping us add air-conditioning to the remaining classrooms which don’t have any yet.”

“Thank you to Cheryl, her husband and her staff for their continued support of our school. I love knowing that the money I had to spend ‘somewhere’ on stationary for my kids - has helped our school in some way and benefits all our children. Thank you also to the families who used this service.” A national stationery retailer had advertised a discount on any booklist that was brought in to their store, however this offer meant that not only did Cheryl and her staff spend their time preparing the lists for a competitor, but the school did not benefit from the rebate Cheryl is providing. “Some people wanted the booklist to take to the Coast because of that discount,” said Cheryl. “I really appreciate the support many people have given by buying their back to school stationery from Canungra Post Office,” said Cheryl. “It is great to be able to give something back to the town,” she said. A cheque from Canungra Post Office for over $1521.15 was presented to the P&C Association from Canungra.

Upgrade for Springbrook Visitors will find it easier to get in and out of the popular Gwongorella picnic area at Springbrook thanks to upgrades by the Palaszczuk government. National Parks Minister Steven Miles said QPWS had recently completed repairs to the entry road, including filling potholes, and would soon reconfigure the entrance to the car park to make a more practical loop road. “$148,500 has been committed for the project and planning for the works is underway. QPWS anticipates the project will start in the second half of 2017 and be finished in the first half of 2018,”Dr Miles said. “This will make it easier for vehicles to get in and out of the busy carpark,”Dr Miles said. “Resurfacing of the road will also be completed. Options to improve the parking and the day-use area are also being considered. “Gwongorella is one of the most popular spots in Springbrook National Park. It has a lovely picnic area, and it’s where most people park to access the famous Purling Brook Falls lookouts and the Purling Brook Falls walking track circuit. He said all work would be done in a way to reduce inconvenience to visitors. More information about Springbrook National Park is at https://www.npsr.qld.gov.au/parks/springbrook/index.html

Roads Survey Rolls Out

High tech laser measurement and video imaging is being used in a survey of the Scenic Rim’s 1730-kilometre network of roads now underway across the region. Two distinctive white vehicles, both with high-definition video cameras to record images of the pavement and road reserve, and one with a laser profiler to assess the condition of sealed roads, were rolled out this week and will continue their surveys for the next fortnight, weather permitting. Mayor Greg Christensen said the surveys will help Council to improve its planning and the maintenance of the Scenic Rim’s network of sealed and unsealed roads for increased safety and connectivity across the region,. “This is an excellent example of Council using innovative technologies to achieve the best value for ratepayers as the survey will help us to better manage and prioritise our capital works programming and maintenance activities,” he said. “The imagery and profiling data will be used to assess the condition of our region’s roads by identifying the type and severity of any structural defects and also the condition of the kerb and channel, line marking, signage and guardrails.” The assessment vehicles are being driven by experienced operators travelling at normal traffic speeds with hazard lighting and other warning devices operating during the laser measurement and video recording of the road network. “However, we ask drivers who may find themselves behind one of the survey vehicles to keep at least a full car length’s distance to provide the rear cameras with a clear view of the road surface. “We thank drivers for their patience during the survey and we look forward to the results which will have wide-ranging benefits for all road users.”

Mixing Cultures I was lucky enough to attend the Burns Supper held at Moriarty Park last month and got a wee insight into a culture I’m not really familiar with! Whilst the people of Scotland have no doubt been part of Australia for many years, the Burns Supper with the address to the Haggis, is something I haven’t come across before and it was a great night with lots of laughs and really good fun! So, this made me think about the wonderful mix of cultures we have in Australia and how lucky we are to live in this amazing multicultural melting pot! Not only do we have an indigenous culture that spans thousands of years, but we have many traditions from the mix of immigrants drawn to our country over the past 200+ years including food, and cultural norms and beliefs that have blended in to our own Australian culture. My own experience is more from the Italian heritage but it is always a privilege when someone invites me to share their culture. Whether it is an experience Burns Supper, food from another country, a story about a place someone has been or a few words of a new language, sharing where you come from is a gift. It’s like inviting someone into your home and saying “this is us, this is who we are”. Be kind to each other. Like you would be to a guest in your home, like you would be to your hosts if you were the visitor. Just be kind to each other.

New Citizens Celebrate Australia Day Australia Day 2017 will have special significance for 22 Scenic Rim residents celebrating the country’s national day as fair dinkum Aussies. Twenty two migrants pledged their loyalty to Australia and its people in a citizenship ceremony following the 2017 Australia Day Awards presentation at The Centre, Beaudesert on the eve of Australia Day. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said that since Australia Day 1949, when legislation brought the concept of Australian citizenship into being, more than 4.5 million people from around the globe had taken the pledge to become Australian citizens. “The history and culture of Australia has been forged over thousands of years, from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to people from the four corners of the earth,” he said. “I thank everyone here this evening who is taking the important step of becoming an Australian citizen and I hope you enjoy a very special Australia Day tomorrow as a fair dinkum Aussie. “You are not only becoming an Australian but also a part of a great community here in the Scenic Rim.” The Scenic Rim’s newest Australians are: Mark Ewing of Tamborine, Antoinette Ihlenfeldt of North Tamborine, Christian Ihlenfeldt of North Tamborine, Alexander Ihenfeldt of North Tamborine, Taeyoung Lee of Canungra, Walter Nielsen, of Mount Tamborine, Vanda of Kalbar, Madhavi Sharma of Kalbar, Robert Brooks of Boonah, Gabrielle Collet of Beaudesert, Camille Dalencon of Tamborine Mountain, Jonathan Dodd of Kalbar, Brett Germon of Veresdale, Nuala Hayes of Tamborine, Jeffrey Hunt of Tamborine, Ariel Hunt of Tamborine, Amanda McPhee of Glenorie, Oliver Straton-McDonald of Eagle Heights, Cassandra Van Vuuren of Veresdale Scrub, Deon Van Vuuren of Veresdale Scrub, Emma -Reese Van Vuuren of Veresdale Scrub and Steven Whatley of North Tamborine

Community Garden’s First Planting

The Canungra Village Garden Project had a busy day on 31st January with the first planting in the site on National Park Road. Alexandra Griffiths said the group did some more of their mulch pathways and

started their very first bed, ‘lasagne style’ (layers), “We planted in sweet basil, thai basil, dark opal basil, oregano, rosemary, parsley, garlic chives - just because that’s what I had, but

it’ll be a nice Mediterranean herb garden soon,” said Alexandra. The next planting day is Tuesday 7th February with an 8am start on site at the garden to continue make more garden beds.

BROMELTON INLAND PORT UPDATE

History was made on Monday 21st January when the first SCT (Specialised Container Transport) train rolled into their new depot at 3.02am from Perth. It was certainly a historic moment for Beaudesert and the region that this project is finally a reality. With such a strong anchor tenant will come numerous other businesses associated with the logistics and transport industry and already a number of local residents are employed on site.

GREEN ARMY

This project has sadly come to an end but SRRC has been lucky enough to have had two years of valuable input from these young recruits and they have certainly left an impressive legacy of environmental regeneration and tree planting behind them. The surrounds of Moriarty Park and a lengthy section of creek bank along Canungra Creek are among the areas the teams have transformed. Thank you to all who have been involved - community members, recruits, environmental staff and Campbell Page recruiting agency.

Cadets coming together

Air Force Cadets Recruiting

221 Squadron, Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) are now recruiting! Are you looking for an outside of school activity for your teenager or maybe you, the parents? Then the AAFC is for you! The Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC) is a youth oriented organisation administered and actively supported by the Royal Australian Air Force. The AAFC started 75 years ago as a means of attracting youth interested in aviation who would lead the cadets to any career and possibly a step in the right direction for a career in the Australian Defence Force. The AAFC teaches youth valuable life skills and will help them develop qualities including leadership, self-reliance, confidence, teamwork and communication. Activities undertaken by the AAFC include powered flying, field craft, adventure training, firearms safety training, drill and ceremonial parades, service knowledge, aeromodelling, navigation, local visits to points of interest and gliding to name a few. Activities are conducted through the year and could encompass some weekend or week long camps. AAFC’s aim is to foster qualities that will enable cadets to become responsible young adults, who will make a valuable contribution to the community. No matter what career they choose, the AAFC provides a foundation of knowledge and skills to assist cadets in their future. Even though the senior cadets conduct some of the training, adult guidance is not far away. With so many cadets in the squadron, they are always fully supervised by adult staff from current or ex-serving Defence Force members, police, teachers, nurses, bankers, commercial pilots, labourers and retirees. Each instructor brings a different skill set and knowledge to the cadets’ lives. The staff are an essential aspect of cadets as they provide a constant for the cadets and assist in many areas of youth development. All instructors are well vetted prior to enrolling as a staff member whose passion for the cadet organisation makes the squadron run smoothly with enjoyable results. All cadets must be aged between 13 (or 13 by mid-April 2017) and 18 years, and be an Australian Permanent Resident. 221 Squadron is based at the 25/49 RQR Army Reserve compound at 49 Commercial Drive, Ashmore. Cadets parade each week of the school term on a Monday night, from 6:00pm to 9:30pm. Cadets are told that school work is the priority as the staff are aware of when the schools have exams and extra-curricular events usually do not clash – in fact it could even help by boosting the self-esteem and self-discipline of your child. We have limited vacancies for new recruits (or adults that would like to become a staff member), that will close around mid April, so please contact us to register your interest! We also have three other Squadrons around the Gold Coast area (Merrimac, Upper Coomera and Elenora) if parading Monday night does not suit you. Please contact ACW (AAFC) Tamara Freeman via email on admino.221sqn@aafc.org.au Please feel free to also visit our Squadron or AAFC web pages, at www.facebook.com/221sqnAAFCparentinformation/www.AAFC.net.org.au

Cosmetic Injections

Tamborine Mountain Medical Practice is pleased to present a range of cosmetic injectable treatments to address your aesthetic concerns. We strive to achieve natural-looking results with subtle enhancements that refresh and rejuvenate.

Muscle Relaxant Injections:

Anti-wrinkle or muscle relaxant injections are a simple, non-surgical procedure that soothes the deep, persistent facial lines that develop over time. The injection relaxes the muscles that cause those lines to form and keeps them relaxed for period of time – usually 3-6 months. The results are often quite dramatic creating a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance usually apparent within days of treatment. The typical areas treated by cosmetic injections include: • Crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes • Frown lines between the eyebrows • Worry lines which run horizontally across the forehead • Deep smile lines which run from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth • Smoker’s lines or lipstick bleed lines which run vertically around the mouth • Marionette lines at the corners of the mouth

Hydration, Dermal fillers and PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma):

Dermal fillers are made up of hyaluronic acid, a substance that is naturally found in the skin and decreases with age. Hyaluronic acid attracts water and creates plumpness. There are lots of options to erase lines and create smoother contours to the face – the type and quantity of the filler will determine the cost. We stock a range of different fillers to meet everyone’s budgets. Results generally last around four to twelve months, depending on the filler, the technique and the area that is being injected. PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) is also a popular treatment option for tightening and smoothing difficult to treat areas. PRP is a natural product created from your own body that stimulates your own collagen to grow, regenerates tissue, and thus acts to naturally smooth and tighten the skin. Common treatment areas include: • Cheek enhancement • Lip enhancement • Nasolabial folds • Tear troughs • Chin augmentation • Nose augmentation • Mouth corners, and wrinkles Arrange a consultation with Dr Deanne Hummelstad to determine a package that suits your needs and your budget.

Nature’s Gems

AWL Pets of

Eastern Quoll

(Dasyurus

viverrinus)

By Melissa Whitby Australia is home to an astounding and diverse variety of mammals, some of which are found nowhere else in the world. Recently, I travelled to Tasmania in pursuit of several unique bird species but I was also on the lookout for a very special mammal, the Eastern Quoll. Australia is home to four Quoll species, each of which is declining in numbers and threatened. The Eastern Quoll has become extinct from the Australian mainland and can only be seen in Tasmania. Another species, the Spotted-tailed Quoll can also be observed in Tasmania. The easiest way to distinguish the two species is Spotted-tailed Quoll are larger than Eastern Quolls and have many spots on the tail whereas Eastern Quolls have a soft fluffy tail which lacks spots. Eastern Quolls have two distinctive colour morphs: black and a pale yellow-brown. Unfortunately, the Tasmanian population of Eastern Quolls is declining. In all my travels throughout Australia, I had never seen a ‘live’ Quoll. Whilst travelling in Tasmania in 2015, I was to learn that there was a Quoll species which resided on Bruny Island (just south of Hobart) and appeared to doing very well. After some discussion with Bruny Island residents and doing some research, it was obvious that the species was the Eastern Quoll. A whirlwind trip to Bruny Island proved very worthwhile and I saw the Eastern Quolls there in the most unusual location - arriving at the Bruny Island ferry terminal just before dusk, I was rewarded to see three Eastern Quolls! Many would be surprised that these animals would be drawn to such a place, however, food was the key. The lights of the ferry terminal attract insects for the quolls to feed on. Unfortunately, the Eastern Quolls were also eating discarded food left behind by people using the ferry. To see the Eastern Quolls in such numbers is amazing considering the species has severely declined throughout Australia. One major factor for the Eastern Quolls doing so well on Bruny Island may be due to the fact that it does not have to contend with pest species such as Cane Toads and Foxes. Overall, Bruny Island is possibly one of the few places to see the endangered Eastern Quoll. If an encounter with an Eastern Quoll is on your bucket list, I would be booking a Eastern Quoll trip to Bruny Island, Tasmania.

Make This Litter the Last

An Australian Native Land Snail – Lamington NP

Neither Pest nor Escargot By Susan Cully Australian native land snails won’t be found in your lettuce patch: they will be under a log or in the leaf litter, eating lichen, fungi, and algae. Some specialist species, carnivorous rainforest snails, will be found feeding on insects and other snails. Malacology is a branch of zoology that includes the study of land snails. The evolutionary story of their transition from marine environments to terrestrial environments is of particular interest to scientists who study the mechanisms of their adaptations as land animals, their evolution and fossil records. As a reflection of their marine ancestry, some species ‘breathe’ by absorbing oxygen directly through their skin. For this reason, the snail must retain as much moisture as possible. Consequently, these snails live in wet, rainforest environments and are active at night and after rain. Moisture retention is assisted by the production of a coating of slimy mucous, used to resist desiccation and to assist movement. There have been many uses of snail slime in traditional as well as in modern medicine. Lamington National Park represents a relict refuge for many Gondwana species, replicating cooler temperatures more consistent with the Gondwana landmass before it broke away from Antarctica. The presence of the Gondwana species that survive in the higher elevations of our local National Parks has been an important feature contributing to the overall uniqueness of these ecosystems and a significant attribute in qualifying for World Heritage listing. The Mt Warning plateaus are a hotspot for study by malacologists from all over the world. The border ranges have a great diversity, up to 100 species, of land snails. Some rainforest snails are the size of a pin head (2 mm) but the Giant Panda snail is the size of a tennis ball (90 mm). If in danger of drying out, the snail retracts deep within its shell and waits for better times. It may, however, be found by a Lyrebird, Noisy Pitta or Scrub Turkey for whom it is an appetizing morsel.

Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) has launched its Last Litter Revolution across South East Queensland in an effort to reduce the number of unwanted puppies, mothers, and mothers-to-be. “We are urging anyone with a litter to contact us and we will desex the mother dog free of charge, and rehome her puppies,” State Rehoming Manager Melinda Phipps said. AWLQ pioneered the ground breaking Last Litter program back in 2002 for cats. Since then thousands of cats have been desexed. This program is now looking to target dogs and puppies. Last year AWLQ cared for and rehomed nearly one thousand puppies and more than 2,500 dogs. “By desexing dogs, particularly females, we’ll reduce the number of unwanted puppies who become unwanted dogs,” Ms Phipps said. “Certain dog breeds are also prone to difficult births and smaller breed mothers can face complications if their puppies are big. “The mother dog remains with her family and is desexed for free after having her last litter.” Animals which are desexed are also less likely to stray, contract disease, fight or spray, in and around the home. “AWLQ has a 58 year tradition of looking after stray and abandoned pets, and finding them homes – these puppies are in safe hands.” Anyone who is interested in the Last Litter Revolution can head to awlqld.com.au for information or sign up to be part of the project. “We can only make a difference with community support,” Ms Phipps said.

The Sun is in your opposite sign, Aquarius, which means that your focus is on relationships. It also means that within your relationships, you will be asked to look at all the qualities that you judge and shy away from. It is time to look at what you react to, in new and creative ways.

VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)

Life is inviting you to renew yourself. The time is up on those places where you find yourself clinging to old dreams or ancient resentments, and are therefore not able to move on. The Aquarian Sun is demanding that you shed old entanglements and find new vistas, new growth.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough St Luke’s is about to hold the AGM of the Church Guild. The words Annual General Meeting often form an image of a boring, long drawn out debates among those in attendance. This is never the case at St Luke’s. Our AGM commences with a delicious meal, followed by vibrant, fast moving discussions and reports. This year the same committee members have happily agreed to stand for election so St Luke’s will continue to be in dedicated hands. Decisions are being made about improving the exterior of the church. It is planned to have the exterior painted during the year and hopefully the deteriorating front fence will also be replaced. St Luke’s will certainly shine forth to the community with such a new exterior but one must also ask does that make it a good church? The answer is no. The outside image of things, or people, does not necessarily reflect the inside. A person can look great on the outside but be carrying many burdens and pain on the inside. How do you feel? Does your exterior reflect your interior? There is a saying “What you see is what you get” and this can often be true. At St Luke’s we are always the same inside and out. Looking on the outside will form an image of reverence and beauty, but seeing and hearing about the inside will lead to a better understanding of why St Luke’s is so important to the people who form the Guild. You are welcome to come along on Tuesday 7th February, join in the meal and hear what it is all about. Maybe you would like what you find.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby We have had a great start to the year with Arkwood Christian Association - our very own Canungra Op Shop - offering to help us out at Moriarty Park with a set of new crockery to enable us to hold more functions with food involved. Our previous stocks have dwindled away over time so this is a huge bonus for us. Help is also offered to get the last lap of the tennis court nets in tip top nick! Canungra Owls Soccer Club have also been helped out in a big way by the Op Shop who have offered to purchase this year’s soccer balls and strips for the girls/ladies teams playing in 2017. Moriarty Park committee at third attempt have also been the successful recipients of a grant from the Queensland Government and Gambling Community Benefit Fund to install fitness modules at Moriarty Park. So a ripping start to 2017! As a fundraiser for The Cancer Council of Queensland, Moriarty Park held their first Burns’ Supper on Frday 27th January. We hope our feedback will be positive and that we can turn this test run into an annual bigger and better event. What could be better than an evening of Haggis, whisky infused oranges, bagpipes, poetry and wild dancing? Or am I a wee bit biased ?? At going to print, we are preparing for our Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year Awards on 3rd February. Watch this space next month for the results! Look out also for some more activities / classes at Moriarty Park this year and consider getting involved: Pilates? African Drumming? Yoga? Our meetings at this stage are still on the third Tuesday of every month at Moriarty Park Hall at 7pm. Everyone welcome!

Taekwondo Is Back!

The Canungra Taekwondo Club restarted classes on Thursday 2nd February. The club has been here for over twenty five years. All ages are welcome, you will get fit and flexible as well learn real self defence techniques. It’s not all about you fighting some one off you, here is an example of of how to fight off some attacks without having to use any fighting or harm to yourself.: You are going towards your car when someone jumps in in front of you. He has a knife in his hand and he tells you to give him your wallet or your purse. You say hold there and I’ll give it to you. you look for your best point of exit (not towards a dead end) take your wallet and through it to the left and run fast to your right screaming help!! You may lose your wallet or purse and some money, and cards, but you will live to wake up the next day... Come along any Tuesday or Thursday to the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Instructor John Callegari will give new students their first class free so see if they like it. For times and more information contact John on 0418 210 880.

Open Day

The 2017 season is only weeks away…have you signed up?

AGM and Vacant Positions

In December last year, the Owls held their AGM. We are very thankful to the small group of consistent volunteers who raise their hand year after year to help the Club do everything that needs to get done before the season starts. This same group of people will also work tirelessly throughout the season so you and your children can enjoy this great community Club. Despite this small group of dedicated volunteers, there are not enough helpers to ensure that our Club can run as efficiently as possible. With this in mind, we are appealing to the local soccer families to raise their hand as we need a Canteen Coordinator – without a person in this position, the canteen will not be open regularly. When open, we will only be able to sell cold drinks, tea and coffee. This means there will be no bacon and egg rolls on Saturday morning; no hot chips on Wednesday night; no oranges provided for half time. Are you able to help? Do you have a reliable teenager who can volunteer their time and in return, gain some valuable experience and a reliable reference? We’d love to hear from you. Having an efficiently run canteen is a great way for the Club to raise crucial funds – please consider volunteering and remember, being the Canteen Coordinator doesn’t mean that you have to work in the canteen – it means you will be responsible for ordering food, conduct regular cleaning and coordinating the roster.

We’ll be holding an open day on Saturday 11th February at Moriarty Park – come down from 8.30am until midday to purchase socks and shorts, order training shirts or participate in the boot swap and ask us any questions you may have about the upcoming season. You’ll also be able to pay fees (full or partial) via cash or card. Fees need to be paid in full prior to game one.

Canungra Owls are looking for assistance to run the Club in 2017

Coaching and Managing

As with every year, we also need volunteers to coach and manage teams. Are you able to help? If you can’t make training, but can make Saturdays, perhaps team up with someone who can’t make it to the games and co-coach with them. The Canungra Owls Soccer Club will support you and fund any coaching course you participate in under the Football Gold Coast umbrella. If you’re planning on helping out in any way, you will need to hold a Blue Card. Completed applications can be handed to any committee member, or post to PO Box 45, Canungra.

Registration and Fees

The Canungra Owls are extremely proud to announce that fees for this year remain unchanged! Head to myfootballclub.com.au before 17th February to register – you can also nominate which team you’d prefer your child to play in. It is extremely important to ensure you register yourself or your child before this date – late registrations will only be accepted if there are spaces available in a team. Please note although registration needs to be completed by 17th February, registration fees are not due at the same time.

Referees

Are you eligible to play in an U13s competition? Would you like to earn some pocket money? We’re hosting a small sided referee course which will allow participants to referee a Miniroos game, as well as an assistant referee course which will allow you to run a line for Junior games…and get paid for it! The course will be run before the commencement of the 2017 season, so if you’re interested, please contact us via email (canungraowls@outlook.com) or leave a message on our Facebook page.

Keep up to date!

To keep up to date with what’s happening at Canungra Owls, please visit our website https://sites.google.com/site/canungraowlssoccerclub/ or our Facebook page. We look forward to a great 20147 season – Hoot Hoot! Page 38

Sport Canungra Bowls Club By Ray Hickson Canungra Bowls Club members are ready for another busy year of Lawn Bowls with the Men’s Summer Nines Competition starting on 4th February and Men’s Pennant later in the year. The Ladies Wall Plaque Competition will start on 15th February, the Scenic Rim Competition, and the monthly mixed fours days, along with many other days as the year goes on. The Club has been fortunate to have members volunteering their time to renovate the Clubhouse. Many thanks to Brian Lawrence, Gary Matheson and all the members who worked hard during the hot weather to complete the renovations in time for the Club to reopen on 22nd January. The Green was closed over the Christmas/ New Year period is also looking and feeling fantastic. There is a great feeling in the Club, with older members mentoring many of our new players and great feedback from other Clubs when they come to Canungra to play. The Club also recently received an owl carved by Chainsaw carving artist Matt Bird. The owl has pride of place on the Club’s bar (where it can keep an eagle eye on everything!). Wayne Reiser donated the silky oak wood for the carving and members Gary and Michelle Matheson paid for the carving. The owl was accepted by long term members Joyce Libke and Herb Flesser and Club Chairman David Gill.
