It’s Been A Long Road...
Jon Krause, Robyn Lee, Virginia West and Graeme Gutteridge looking forward to the Lamington National Park Road upgrade.
Lobbying by residents has paid off with funding of $787,000 allocated to a stretch of Lamington National Park Road approximately five kilometres from Canungra. This section is currently little more than a single lane of bitumen with wide gravel shoulders on either side. Local drivers move partially onto the shoulders when passing an oncoming vehicle, however the road is used by many tourists who are not familiar with this type of driving. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said it is a win for local residents who have been advocating for the works. “I am pleased to announce we have been able to bring forward these essential maintenance works, which are expected to start
in the first quarter of 2017, weather permitting,” Mr Bailey said. “Shoulder and pavement strengthening, and sealing will be undertaken over this two-kilometre section to provide two sealed traffic lanes similar to the others nearby.” “It’s estimated this work will be undertaken over two months with short delays during the construction.” “In the meantime, regular inspections of the road will be undertaken and maintenance works will be carried out as required.” “We are committed to keeping tourist drives safe and efficient for all road users,” he said. Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said after years of intense lobbying he was relieved the works would soon be underway.

In the past 18 months I have frequently raised concerns about the condition of Lamington National Park Road with TMR and the Queensland Government,” Mr Krause said. “My lobbying has been strongly supported by Division 3 Councillor Virginia West and the local community – I’m pleased that by working together we have secured the funds to widen the road shoulder and make things safer. “The roadworks should be finished mid 2017 which is a great outcome for locals, as well as for visitors who use the road to access tourist destinations such as Lamington National Park and O’Reilly’s,” he said.

Community groups were the real winners of the 2016 Canungra Show with prizemoney from the evening entertainment being distributed to a several local and national not for profit groups. Canungra A H& I Society President, Airlie Worrall, said teams at the 2016 Canungra Show competed in Dunny Races, Bubble Football and a Junior and Senior Tractor Pull. “Each team nominated a charity or community group to receive their prizemoney,” she said. “The biggest winners were the Canungra Owls Soccer Club who received $1,500 - half of which was from ‘Hogan’s Heroes’, Ben Hogan’s team who came second in the Tractor Pull.” Several schools and the Community Garden Project also receive prizemoney, with the Prostate Foundation of Australia receiving $1,000 (from Stevie’s Pullers, winners of the Aquis Tractor Pull) and the Starlight Foundation, Kids with Cancer Foundation and the Starlight Foundation also receiving funds. “This would not have been possible without the generosity of the businesses who sponsored the evening entertainment specifically Aquis, Canungra FoodWorks, Aussie Lifestyle Properties, Canungra Rise and Chesterfield Australia,” said Airlie. The Canungra Show will be held on 27th August 2017.

Red Dog at Home in Canungra
When Australia’s latest movie sensation, Red Dog: True Blue hit the big screen on Boxing Day, the star of the film was relaxing on his farm just outside Canungra. The canine star of the Red Dog prequel, Phoenix, now calls Canungra home, living on animal trainer Zelie Bullen’s farm with a plethora of four legged friends. Zelie, her husband Craig and son Colt spent two months with the Red Dog: True Blue film crew in the Pilbara, many of whom were part of the original Red Dog crew. Zelie said it was a pleasure to be part of such a tight knit group. She and three year old Kelpie Phoenix, bonded so closely that Producer Nelson Woss said he couldn’t imagine separating them. “That dog chose Zelie within 48 hours of meeting her,” said Nelson. Red Dog: True Blue tells the story of eleven year old Mick (played by Levi Miller) who is sent to his grandfather’s (Bryan Brown) cattle station in the remote Pilbara region of Western Australia. He prepares himself for a life of dull hardship and loneliness, but instead finds friendship with a dog that changes his life forever. The lead dog in the original Red Dog film was played entirely by a red cloud Kelpie, Koko, who passed away from heart disease in 2012. More animal action in the prequel meant that several dogs were needed to complete Red Dog: True Blue. “We used five dogs for the movie, including two who were trained just to do the running scenes in the film,” said Zelie. Canungra is now home to three of the five Kelpies used on Red Dog: True Blue. Beau travelled from Canungra to Western Australia to be used on the film and was returned to his owners after filming. Another of the Kelpies, Dodge, bonded closely with Colt Bullen and also lives on the Bullen’s farm.
Phoenix at home on the farm with Zelie, Blaze, Craig and Colt Bullen
Following filming, Zelie brought Phoenix home to continue his prepare him for the promotional work prior to the film’s release. “We took him everywhere - shopping centres, movie theatres, soccer games to get him used to being around so many people and distractions,” she said. Movie premieres and interviews can be taxing enough for humans, but Zelie said Phoenix rose to the occasion each time. He also showed the strong work ethic the Kelpie breed are well-known for, enjoying the busy schedule during the promotional tour for Red Dog: True Blue. Phoenix travelled around Australia to 18 movie premieres as well as promoting the film on television, radio and youtube.
The Canungra Times - January 2017
“Some days we had radio interviews, filming and visits to the Children’s Hospital, but Phoenix rose to the occasion every time,” said Zelie. “I always ask people not to touch him until he has finished work, but once he is finished he loves getting pats from people and meeting everyone,” she said. Zelie said she is very grateful to have Phoenix as part of their family. “The hardest part of my job is leaving the animals,” said Zelie. In this case, Zelie, Craig and their family will be happy to have Phoenix and Dodge live out their days on the farm - unless fame calls again to the new Red Dog. Red Dog: True Blue is playing at cinemas around Australia.

Killarney Glen Tragedy Members of the Police Dive Squad and a team of emergency services were called to Killarney Glen Falls the after a man failed to surface while in the water on Friday 30th December. Police divers retreived a body, believed to be the 19 year old man the following day. Initial information was that around 11am the teenager got into difficulties and became submerged under water. Another visitor to the waterhole at the time said the man tried to grab onto the rock wall and slipped underwater. “We tried to retrieve him but the water was too deep and murky,” he said. A report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Opportunities for Volunteers
Canungra’s community organisations are calling for volunteers to take up positions with Annual General Meetings for many key organisations coming up in the next three months. Canungra Show Society Secretary, Keer Moriarty, said unlike metropolitan areas, many community events and facilities are run by volunteers. “I recently saw a post on Facebook asking about New Year’s Eve fireworks in Canungra. The person came from the Gold Coast where there is a council funded fireworks display and they were surprised there is nothing here,” said Keer. “In our small community if you want something to happen, you have to be Volunteering is a great way to meet people in prepared to help organise it. The more the community. Photo: Mark Connop. people who help, the easier the load for everyone,” she said. The Secretary of the Canungra School of Arts Hall, Barry Day, is also the Bookings Officer and Web Site Manager for the Hall. Barry will retire from these positions at the Hall’s upcoming AGM on 8th February, but with few members on the Hall Committee, he is inviting interested people to contact him about taking on a position. “Since I became secretary, we have spent about $330,000 at the Hall. This has meant a lot of extra time with letting contracts, expressions of interest etc, but all the modernisation projects are now behind us, and the Hall practically runs itself,” said Barry. On average Barry spends about an hour and a half to two hours per week on his voluntary positions at the Hall. “Both tasks have been very fulfilling, and I get more out of the positions than I put in, friendships, meeting people etc,” he said. Canungra Owls Soccer Club held their AGM in December 2016 but still needs more people to join their management committee and help organise the Club’s 2017 season. To find out more about the Canungra School of Arts Hall, contact Barry Day on 0409 926 033 or for more information about volunteering locally, contact The Canungra Times on 07 5543 5532.

Traffic Management Changes to Rain on our Parade
State government changes to traffic management rules will put community events at risk and add thousands of dollars to Scenic Rim Regional Council’s budget. The Department of Transport and Main Roads recently adopted Australian Standard AS1742 Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) which creates a national standard at roadworks. This includes employing an accredited Traffic Management company to undertake and manage road closures. Previously, community volunteers have successfully controlled pedestrians and traffic for local events such as the ANZAC Day Parade, Canungra Rodeo and Show. Member for Beaudesert, Jon Krause described the changes as ‘simply ludicrus’ and said it will add a devastating cost to events which have been managed safety for years. “I’ve written to the Minister for Main roads and told him that I strongly object to these regulations and they should be looked at again,” said Jon. “It will put a lot of community events at risk. It is an insult to our community and its traditions,” he said. Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Cr Rick Standfield said Council estimates the

It is something that has to happen but the additional cost would be a major hurdle for us,” he said.

Christmas
An electrical storm necessitated a quick change of plan for the Carols in the Park, which were to be held at Moriarty Park on Saturday 3rd December. Organisers quickly set up the Hall for performers and a small but enthusiastic audience. The Moriarty Park Committee, in conjunction with Gospel Road Church, did a fantastic job setting up the stage, sound and events for the children - had the weather been kinder it would no doubt have been the best Carols event Canungra has seen. As Santa was unable to attend the Carols due to the storm, Moriarty Park Committee organised for him to visit at DJ Smith Park on Saturday 17th December, handing out lollies for children. Canungra QFES officers were also out and about in force just before Christmas giving Santa a lift around the streets, giving out lollies and calling out “Ho ho ho, to some very excited children (and adults). Great community spirit! Below: Lucy Stephens with Santa at DJ Smith Park. What’s in store for 2017 You may have noticed the new front cover design and new signage at the office in Lawton Lane. After the bank agency closed I felt a bit of rebranding was in order and coincidentally earlier this year, our Kelpie, Beau decided he no longer wanted to stay home alone. And he let the neighbours know. Loudly. The consequence of that was that Beau started coming to work with me. Now we all know what good working dogs Kelpies are and Beau is no exception. Happy to sit in the air con and greet everyone, he is the new PR DOG for The Canungra Times (as opposed to the stressed face you will see in my chair). With a little more time on my hands (hooray) I’m looking forward to chasing some more stories for the Times, and telling your stories. I’m especially keen to talk to people in our area who do or have done things that are a little different! I’ve come across a few people already who do some surprising things - animal trainer Zelie Bullen in this edition, for example. Maybe you know someone you think has a story to tell, an interesting job or an unusual hobby, or someone who does some charity work that we would like to know about. So get on the phone, email me, help create a record of the amazing people who make up our community. These are the stories I want in The Canungra Times - your stories, in your local paper.
Well, 2016 is now behind us. Hopefully everyone has had an enjoyable and safe Christmas with family and friends, and are not suffering too much for indulging in the Chrissy pudding. For those of us who worked over the Christmas long weekend I’d like to say a big thanks to the community that incorporates the Canungra Policing Division. While we would all rather be home spending time with our families, it makes the shifts a lot more enjoyable when the people we encounter are happy and wishing the best. Please remember to be responsible when attending celebrations and ensure you can party and then get home safely. Readers may have seen an increase in the number of Traffic Branch vehicles patrolling the Canungra and Tamborine Mountain areas of late. A number of motorcyclists have also found out, too late, that the vehicle they were overtaking over continuous double lines was an unmarked Police car with camera fitted. With four of the seven crashes reported in the last month involving motorcycles, and the major cause of these crashes involving speed and rider error, these patrols will continue. I urge caution to all drivers and riders not to become a statistic, either physically or financially. Crashes can be avoided, and so can fines through the behaviour of all road users. The number of users of Killarney Glen and Cedar Creek Falls has been on the rise with the warmer weather upon us. In years gone by this has led to opportunistic thieves to strike, breaking into cars and stealing easy to carry items such as mobile phones and money. If you area attending these or any similar location please ensure your vehicle is secure and all valuables are removed, and if you see anyone acting suspiciously around vehicles report it to your local Police. Please remember, if you see or hear anything that may be illegal or suspicious, no matter how insignificant it may seem, please come and see us or contact the station on one of the following numbers: Canungra Police 55435120, Police Link on 131444 or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. Letters to the Editor Letters should be less than 250 words and include the writer’s name (for publication), address and telephone numbers. Anonymous letters with no contact details will not be considered for publication. Email letters to: news@canungratimes. com.au or post to The Canungra Times, 1/1 Lawton Lane, Canungra QLD 4275.

Retaining Our History
The Canungra School of Arts Hall in its present form opened in 1956 but the history of the Hall goes back to 1886. The landmark building, located at 3-7 Pine Street has been community owned and managed by volunteers since its inception. On the 3rd of July, 1886, a public meeting was held to discuss the building of a public hall in Canungra. Three trustees were elected to oversee the project, being Mr J E Payne, Mr H J Delpratt and Mr John W Lahey. The building was completed late in 1886 by Louis Howells for the Lahey Brothers, owners of the (then) new Canungra Softwood Mill. In May 1887, a committee was formed to manage the hall for the benefit of the community. The Hall was constructed on the west bank of the Canungra Creek, and used as a recreation centre by local families and the many single mill workers. It was moved into town in 1900 and was used as a school for a short time until a new school was opened off Finch Road on land bought from Mrs Duncan. This left the hall to be used for its original purpose, that being recreation. The town at the time boasted a brass band, an orchestra and various performing groups with the occasional visiting “entertainment troop”.
In 1912 the community built a larger, elaborate School of Arts Hall in the Gothic style on the site of the present Hall. This building had stage facilities and was the centre of the town’s social life. Sadly, it burned to the ground on 3rd March 1946. A temporary building, moved from the dispersing United States Army at Camp Cable, and positioned in where the car park is now, was used for 10 years until residents began a project to build the present Hall. The Hall continues to be utilised for recreational purposes and remains the property of the community.
Today the Canungra School of Arts Hall is used for martial arts classes, dance classes, Canungra Markets, meetings and shows for the Orchid Society as well as a popular venue for weddings and parties. It is one of the most inexpensive halls to hire and one of the best maintained venues in South East Queensland. The Canungra School of Arts Hall will hold their Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 8th February and are looking for volunteers to assist with the administration of the Hall. For more information please contact Barry Day on 0409 926 033.

The Colours of Oriental Carpets
Everyone who admires oriental carpets has learned about how the relationship between design and colour will work. The more one learns about oriental carpets, the greater one’s interest becomes, and it is important to understand how the colours are obtained. Colour is science in itself and this is important to the understanding of carpets as works of art, and for assessing their value. Each colour has a different meaning which varies depending on where the carpet is made. Many differing statements are found in literature about the symbolism of colour, but whatever colours are chosen, they are usually gentle and easy to live with. White is the most open of all colours, representing peace and purity. Blue means tranquil peace, it is the colour of heaven, eternity and the night sky, and is often used to symbolise thoughtfulness and meditation. Green means constancy, the spring which always returns, Paradise green with plants and foliage. Green also means active desire to lead others to a more useful life. Green is the holy colour of The Prophet and renewal of life and hope. Red is the most vibrantly alive of the colours. It means great joy, happiness and success. It is a powerful energetic colour and represents leadership. Yellow is the colour of sun, used to represent plentiful burdens and attainment of hope for happiness. Orange means devotion, tenderness, sympathy and high regard for others. Brown is the colour of acceptance, the fruitful earth (harvest) and fertility is also man’s roots. In nomadic rugs brown is frequently used to represent a need for their own earth or home. The wool is dyed using either natural vegetable dyes, which give the more subtle hues or chromium dyes for more vibrant colours and improve with age, remaining rich and vibrant. Discover the beauty of oriental carpets - visit the UPR Carpet Showroom on Main Western Road, North Tamborine.

Beechmont Road Improvements Motorcycle safety improvements worth $1.6 million have begun on Beechmont Road. Main Roads and Road Safety Minister Mark Bailey said works planned include shoulder-widening on the one-way section between Elimbah Court and Jardine Road, and installing guardrails and rubrail. “I’m pleased to announce we’ve fast tracked funding to to install rubrail on the existing guardrail at six locations on Beechmont Road to improve motorcyclists’ safety. “Construction on the remaining upgrades will be undertaken in the 2017-18 financial year, following the completion of the detailed design mid next year. “Rubrail is an additional barrier that is installed below the guardrail to improve motorcyclist’s safety by reducing the severity of a crash and preventing impacts with the guardrail and supporting posts. “It’s often used in mountainous areas and winding roads like Beechmont Road. About 540 metres is being installed in sections on high-risk locations between the intersection of Nerang–Murwillumbah and Ingham streets.” “This road has a history of crashes and tragically this has resulted in seven fatalities on Beechmont Road since 2005.” Mr Bailey said. “Over the last fortnight we’ve had a high number of Motorcycle deaths on Queensland roads, so I urge everyone to slow down and take extra care over the holidays.”

Canungra Books and Art is a tiny shop packed to the rafters with vintage to contemporary books, studio pottery, LP’s, art and interesting things. A stunning selection of quality calendars is also available featuring favourite artists including Margaret Olley, Frida Kahlo, and Norman Lindsay. “People are always surprised to find the bookshop tucked away behind the Shoe Vault,” said shop owner Jan McGregor, “There is something about a bookshop that many people find special. It’s a place to disappear into another world for a few minutes or a few hours, and to enjoy a chat.” Every weekend is a fascinating mix of conversations. “I didn’t realise how popular the old books would be, like George Orwell’s 1984, Kurt Vonnegurt, Hemmingway and others,” said Jan. “People often come in looking for a particular book and they are delighted if they find it here or I ring them later to say I have tracked it down for them.” “As the bookshop is only small, I have concentrated on handpicking quality books across all genres from valuable old books to new release novels from authors worldwide,” said Jan. “In response to strong interest I have a special section for Australiana, old classics and war history books. They sit along shelves packed with the best crime, adventure and fantasy authors including Lee Child, James Patterson, Ian Rankin, Lynda La Plante, Clive Cussler, Terry Pratchett and more.” Famous books such as the Celestine Prophecy, books by the Dalai Llama and Kahlil Gibran, and astrology books are also regulars on the shelves in the spiritual, self-development and esoteric section. Children’s books have their own special section. “My small customers are very specific about the books they like and I am constantly on the hunt for Roald Dahl, Emily Rodda, Marvel, along with the latest fantasy books and all the vintage favourites,” said Jan. For the pottery lovers, the shop has a good selection of vintage to contemporary studio pottery and china. “It’s been a fascinating journey since the shop opened in early 2015, having the support of so many local people who pop in regularly, and meeting so many book lovers. I’m now looking forward to the shop moving forward in 2017,” said Jan. A blog is coming soon so that people can follow the story … Canungra Books and Art also buy selected books. Feel welcome to give Jan a call on 0418 792-161. Canungra Books and Art is located in the laneway behind The Shoe Vault, or enter through D J Smith Park. Bagg’s Bed and Breakfast is looking a bit different lately with new owners Andrew and Wendy Horchner taking over at the end of last year. The couple have happily returned to Canungra after several years away, and have renamed the accommodation house ‘The Odd Gecko’. Wendy said the house was originally transported to Canungra in 1998 from South Brisbane for the sole purpose of being a Bed and Breakfast. “We have already done a lot of work on the grounds and the house. We want to offer our guests a luxury accommodation experience with friendly, country hospitality,” said Wendy. The Odd Gecko is situated in a quiet area of Canungra, surrounded by lush tropical gardens. Each room has its own bathroom and their is also a family suite that is perfect for a small family. The gardens have been a popular place for wedding photos and Andrew and Wendy are keen to accommodate wedding parties as well as large groups. Guests also have use of the salt water pool, outdoor spa and barbecue area. The Odd Gecko is located at 12 - 14 King Street, Canungra. Welcome
to
2017
I would like to wish you all a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2017 and look forward to working together in the upcoming year.
Good News For Lamington National Park Rd Residents
In the lead up to Christmas DTMR announced funding to upgrade the section of road 1.8kms from town which is extremely narrow, a safety matter and continually breaks down following wet weather. The shoulders will be bitumen sealed allowing a white line to be painted on the road making travel safer for all motorists. The Federal Government announced just prior to Christmas that they will be funding a mobile phone tower to be situated on Lamington National Park Rd. This will be welcome news for residents who struggle with inconsistent or non existent mobile coverage and of course will improve communication for emergency services and visitors travelling in the area.
Lahey Crossing
The tender has been awarded for the replacement of this crossing over Lahey Creek on Upper Coomera Rd and work will commence in coming weeks. This project is co-funded by Council and the Queensland Government Community Resilience Fund to reduced the risk of isolation to residents up the valley in times of low level flooding.
Mollenhagen Bridge
Refurbishment of this aged bridge is now complete and the approaches have been sealed with a special asphalt compound to reduce damage during high water flows.

Nature’s Gems
AWL Pets of
Orange-bellied Parrot (Neophema chrysogaster) By Melissa Whitby Being the avid birdwatcher I am, there are particular bird species I have wanted to see for many years. One such bird is the critically endangered Orange-bellied Parrot (OPB). Recently, I flew by light plane to a remote section of the Tasmanian wilderness, Melaleuca, to see this beautiful, captivating bird species. For those lucky enough to see the Orange-bellied Parrot in the wild, the most distinguishing features of this bird species, is its small size, rich green colouring and bright blue around the bend of the wing. The male of the species is a rich green above with an orange belly patch. Female birds are duller and less blue in colour with no orange belly patch. These small parrots migrate across the Bass Strait to breed in South Western Tasmania around October and then migrate north to Victoria and South Australia in March. The preferred habitat of Orange-bellied Parrots in Tasmania is button grass plains with patches of forest or tea-tree scrub. These small parrots will nest in tree hollows and at Melaleuca, the birds are readily using the nest boxes to breed in. This year has seen the lowest number of Orange-bellied Parrots return to breed at Melaleuca with only four females returning. To boost numbers of the parrots in the wild, captive raised Orange-bellied Parrots are released to intermingle with wild birds and increase the population. Researchers, Tasmanian government employees and volunteers are in agreement that if nothing is done soon, Orange-bellied Parrots will be extinct in the wild. As a last effort ditch, a crowd-funding campaign was set-up and money raised so that researchers could undertake different approaches to increase the number of Orange-bellied Parrots in the wild. The success of this campaign will be seen when the number of returned Orange-bellied Parrots are recorded for the breeding season of 2017-2018. For me to have seen and shared the space of such a beautiful bird was an extraordinary privilege and it is my sincere hope that these small parrots do not disappear forever from their preferred Australian habitat. It is a timely reminder to all that many Australian wildlife species are on the verge of extinction and with the support of the Australian public, the fate of many of these creatures could certainly be turned from them going Orange-bellied Parrot extinct forever.

A True Role Model
Gondwana Gem to Grow in Your Garden Small Bolwarra (Eupomatia bennettii) Family: Eupomatiaceae
By Susan Cully Rainforest Plants, volumes I-VI, is a popular series of books by Nan and Hugh Nicholson. The following description of the Small Bolwarra is an excerpt from that book. This plant is plentiful in the rainforests on our plateaus. For less than one day this beautiful scented flower blooms in the low intensity light of the rainforest floor. In that time it needs to be pollinated by small weevils if it is to set seed. Each flower produces one fruit with dozens of seeds inside. The plant is a small shrub less than 1m with only one or two slender stems, and is found in moist volcanic soils from Nambucca valley near Coff’s Harbour in NSW to Gladstone in Queensland. This species belongs to an ancient and primitive family with only one other member, the shrub, Eupomatia laurina or Smooth Bolwarra. So despite its modest size, it is of enormous interest to world science. In the garden: It is a somewhat straggly and not alluring as a garden specimen but that does not prevent it being sought after by many enthusiasts for its lovely flower. When young it sometimes appears to die back but shoots again in the spring from a tuberous root. The seed is difficult to find, as the plant is uncommon, and it germinates slowly. Cuttings are usually successful. Nan, a trained botanist, and Hugh, a passionate photographer, are also known for establishing Australia’s first ever rainforest nursery. More recently, using a vast collection of images of plants in each life cycle stage, they have been partners in a collaboration to produce an interactive key to rainforest plants. This has been published in a USB format and in December 2016 became available as an App on the App Store.
Munruben resident Tayla Pearson has her sights firmly set on a career in the modelling industry. Only 17 years of age, Tayla will compete in the Grand Final of Australian Supermodel Of The Year 2016 in Bali which is held between 30th January and 5th February 2017. Tayla finished Year 12 at St Thomas More College in 2016. She has a part-time job and is undertaking a make-up course but primarily wants to advance her career as a model. “Not only am I doing this for myself, I am doing this to make my little brother proud,” said Tayla, “He was my number one supporter for everything I did but especially in my modelling.” “Sadly we lost Kodi five months ago due to suicide at the age of 14. I would also love to use this as a pathway to get his bullying message out and try and make a change as much as I possibly can. “Becoming an ambassador for youth suicide awareness and bullying is one of my life goals and at the start of 2017 I am hoping to start going out to schools and communities and presenting my bullying speech,” she said. “I have managed to get Red and White Foundation on board and they are assisting me in getting a website and brochures organised and pushing to get me a start in a school to talk about cyper bullying. Hoping if I can get into one school it may start a roll on effect,” she said. Tayla is one of 17 contestants who will be flown to Bali to compete for the title of ‘Australian Supermodel Of The Year’.

Mars spends most of the month in Pisces, which leaves you feeling decidedly becalmed. When you have too much time on your hands for introspection, your mind tends to lead you on a merry chase. The good news is, that near the end of the month, Mars enters Aries and you are on fire.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Christmas is over and the New Year has begun. Have you recovered from the celebrations, the overeating and making your New Year resolutions? It is a very good time to quietly contemplate what is ahead of us. There could be many changes to occur, such as your children, or grandchildren moving on in their lives, growing up, starting school, starting University. The list for those around us is endless, but what about you? Have you given some thought to your own self? What do you want to achieve in 2017? What do you want to do differently this year? Our annual Christmas street stall was a great success, thanks to you, the people of Canungra and district. The small group of worshippers at St Luke’s banded together to bring their produce and work as a team, to raise over $1,300. The raffle winners were thrilled with their prizes, especially David from the Canungra Hardware store, who won two of the prizes. It certainly was his lucky day! A big thank you must go to Jo from the Canungra Butchery for again kindly allowing us to set up in front of her shop. We appreciate the generosity of Jo and the people of Canungra and all the local businesses who are always so willing to assist in so many ways, including purchasing raffle tickets. I wish we could give everyone a prize for your continued support each time we set out to fund raise to maintain our church as an important part of the community. It is also very important to thank Keer Moriarty, as the producer/editor of this our local newspaper. Without this newspaper, the chance to communicate so widely with each other would not be possible. Thank you Keer and your team.

By Kim Sami, Canungra Area Golf Club.
Canungra Golf Club Wraps Up 2016!!
A great end to a fantastic year of golf was celebrated by the members of the Canungra Area Golf Club. Firstly was the CAGC Presentation afternoon on Sunday 27th November which was held at the Clubhouse. Several members were awarded well deserved trophies and then took the opportunity to take part in some karaoke. We discovered that our Club Champion, Ross Hewlett, could not only play a mean game of golf but wasn’t too shabby on the microphone either. Many thanks to Mark Byrne from FMK Entertainment for volunteering his time and equipment to make our evening so enjoyable. Secondly, the ladies from the Canungra Ladies Golf Club enjoyed a delicious Christmas lunch at the Canungra Services Club on Tuesday 29th November. Even a fire alarm with the expectation of a sexy fireman didn’t deter the 20 ladies from swapping Secret Santa presents, receiving awards and trophies and celebrating another successful year of golf. Thank you Canungra Services Club for providing a lovely venue and meal. Lastly, we had our much anticipated Gala Day on Saturday 10th December. Teams of three dressed up in crazy outfits and played a modified nine hole Ambrose event. After a breakfast of champers and chicken the teams made their way around the course before gathering together to enjoy a BBQ lunch. A great day was had by all and finished the fixture program for 2016. Our 2017 program kicks off on Thursday 5th and Saturday 7th January with a Monthly Medal. The ladies fixture program will begin on Tuesday 7th February 2017. We must thank the Department of National Parks, Sports and Racing Get Going initiative who provided our club with $5,534 to purchase IT equipment and provide training to support the Club’s One Golf Electronic Scoring Platform. We are also very thankful to the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s Community Grants Program for the $1000 we received.

Membership fees are only $385 per year plus a $100 joining fee, BUT - take advantage of our great offer for January and February 2017 where the $100 joining fee is waived for all new members. Come for the short drive to Alloah Road, Canungra and check out our hidden oasis. For more information contac the Clubhouse on 5543 4620, Guy on 0400 643 648 or Mark on 0414 395 578. Moriarty Park News
By Bren Dalby
Well unfortunately, once again, our Carols were comprised by the weather ... maybe we should try November next year?!! Huge thanks to Neil and Sadie from Gospel Road who utilise the Moriarty Park hall on Sunday mornings for pulling together a terrific day and even better evening for all who attended. The band and choir from our school sounded terrific, and all other entertainment was very well received. Santa didn’t make it to the Carols due to a huge electrical storm, however he did manage to fit us into his busy schedule with a visit to D J Smith park on 17th December where, much to his delight, about 30 to 40 children came along. Our Foodworks Sportsperson of the Year Awards will be held at Moriarty Park on Friday 3rd February at 6pm for a 6.30 start. All monthly award winners should have been notified by now, if you have not received an invitation please contact me as soon as possible. Guest speaker will be World Champion Hang Glider Johnny Durand. A barbecue will be held afterwards for all attending with food provided by Tony and Anne from FoodWorks. Moriarty Park Community Sporting Centre is run by a committee of volunteers. Meetings are held (generally) on the third Tuesday of each month at 7pm. Please come along if you can - all welcome. For enquiries contact Bren on 0414 435 919.
