Canungra State School Students Named Water Warriors for 2014
Canungra State School received the Water Warrior Award - presented by Target at the 14th Annual Healthy Waterways Awards on Friday 20 June for their ‘Cool2BeGreen’ initiative. The Cool2BeGreen project directly engages community members, school children and staff to contribute to the management of the school’s local environment. The school has celebrated a variety of achievements through the project including the management of a commercially sized worm farm on school grounds, one of the first of its kind in an Australian school, and integration of sustainable education into the school curriculum. The project maintains and celebrates the Wangerriburra cultural trail and bushtucker garden and included a Canungra Creek restoration initiative and outdoor education zone. The Canungra State School Green Team said the Cool2BeGreen project is an exciting part of school life and it feels great to lead the school into being more environmentally aware. At the Awards Principal Colleen Murphy acknowledged the traditional owners of the land in her speech. Colleen said the Green Team has put a lot of work in to getting students involved with environmental issues and is well supported in the community during working bees and parents voluntarily assisting with projects. Businesses in the town are also involved with the Green Team’s efforts. “Canungra FoodWorks are a major sponsor of what we do,” she said.
Jodie Clifford, Colleen Murphy, Fiona Williams, Linda Riggs and Kate Raymont at the Healthy Waterways Awards
“They supply food for every working bee we run. Scenic Rim Regional Council have also provided grants which enable us to carry out many of the projects. Both organisations have been incredibly supportive of the school and the Green Team’s efforts.” Healthy Waterways’ Chief Executive Officer, Ms Julie McLellan, said the Awards play a key role in engaging more people to contribute to a clean, green, sustainable South East Queensland.

Wayne and Canungra Hotel - Keeping Bluecare on the Road
Blue Care community nursing vehicles will be on the road in the Scenic Rim thanks to ongoing fundraising from Wayne Reiser and the staff and patrons of the Canungra Hotel. Wayne has been fundraising at the Hotel for over 10 years and estimates he has raised over $40,000 in that time. This year, Wayne donated $4,000 to Blue Care Beaudesert’s Auxillary which goes toward the running costs of vehicles for Blue Care community nurses. The nurses cover a wide area from the NSW border to Boonah, Beaudesert and Canungra to help care for people in their homes. Blue Care started as the Blue Nursing Service in 1953. It provides health care and community nursing, assisting individuals, families and communities. Wayne has also donated $500 to a Breast Cancer charity and $500 to Motor Neurone Disease research this year through the same fundraising venture. Wayne said he is very grateful to the management, staff and patrons of the Canungra Hotel for supporting his fundraising efforts.

Agency Open But the Community Bank Campaign Continues
Volunteers from the Canunga and District Community Bank Steering Committee celebrated two milestones in their Campaign on 20th June - the opening of the Canungra Agency and achieving over 50% of the share allocation being filled in pledges. The agency opened eight new accounts on the day, with Monique Morcus and Karen McAndrew the recipients of the draw for a $50 credit on their Bendigo Bank account. All new account holders from the day the agency opened where eligible for this draw. Agency Principal and Steering Committee member, Keer Moriarty, said she was encouraged by the suppor the agency has seen over the past month, but reminded residents that the Agency is not the end of the campaign for a Community Bank. “The Agency has been established as part of the campaign for a community bank - it will be here until the branch opens,” said Keer. “At this stage, people still have the opportunity to pledge to buy shares in

a full service community bank which will return profits to shareholders and local community organisations.” “This is a long term investment for residents and people with a connection
to Canungra. It is an investment, and with over half the share allocation filled, now is a good time to pledge to own a part of your own local community bank,” she said.

Tamborine Village Lions run Meat Trays raffles at Canungra Hotel
Tamborine Village Lions Club Changeover Dinner
On Friday 16th May Tamborine Village Lions ran two meat trays raffles at Canungra Hotel. This was a very successful evening, helping to raise $139.00 for the Canungra Community. This was the Lions Club’s first venture into fundraising this way and they learnt a lot from the experience. They are returning the Canungra Hotel every Friday from now on. Tamborine Village like to get funds raised back into the community through supporting local families or activities. Previously they have helped build fences for a family with a child with autism, purchased a specially built push bike for a child with Cerebral Palsy, purchased a sleep alarm for a teenager with Cerebral Palsy and the list goes on. If you or anyone you know requires assistance or if you have any requests for local community support please contact Tamborine Village Lions Club Community Officer Richard Wright on 0414 554 268 on or email tamborinevillagelions@live.com.

On Friday 27th June Tamborine Village Lions Club held the 2014 Changeover Dinner at Thunderbird Park. This year the theme was Pyjama Party. What a fun night! The incumbent President Paul Krahnen was re-elected as President, along with Vice President Phil Sherriff and Richard Wright sworn in along side of the new Secretary, David Walker, and Treasurer, Linda Mulgrew for 2014. Congratulations also to Gary Hamblyn on being awarded Club Member of the Year and Richard Wright on being awarded Lion of the Year. Both of these members are very much deserving recipients of these awards. They give tirelessly to the club and their community and have done so for many years. The club cannot thank them enough for all they do. The Club would also like to thank Tamborine Mountain Lions clubs members who attended and joined in the pyjama party theme. Also thank you to Nadia O’Carroll for attending the dinner.

Beechmont’s Zest Fest Locals and visitors took advantage of the opportunity to catch up with each other and enjoy the food and music at Beechmont’s Zest Fest on Sunday 29th July. Organiser Wendi Trulson said there were more stallholders this year and the crowd was approximately the same as previous years, estimated at 600 people during the day. “It’s more about what’s in the community and what is sustainable,” said Wendy, “Really, it’s our Main Street for the day.” Despite cold temperature and high winds, stallholders said the festival was a success with people rugging up to brave the weather. Drum Pulse’s workshop was popular with young and old and the sustainable gardening talks by Beechmont’s Community Garden was another highlight.

Family FUNdraiser at Canungra Bowls Club By Shane Stevenson
On Saturday 7th June, Canungra Bowls Club and the Wonglepong Branch of the QCWA combined to raise money to help families affected by severe drought. When the gates opened at 9am families enjoyed pony rides, lawn bowls, face-painting, guessing alpaca weights and curiosity stalls. The pig racing and cent auctions attracted great interest, as did the barbecue. In the afternoon, Mr Murray Dover drew the first prize ticket in the major raffle which included $4,400 in prizes. An exciting live auction followed in the clubhouse with bidders going head-tohead for handmade quilts, accommodation, wines, firewood and even a framed 2014 State of Origin Jersey and Football signed by the QLD team up for grabs!
True community generosity will see over $8,500 donated to the Public Rural Crisis Fund for distribution. It’s Official! Tamborine Mountain College Goes Primary in 2015!
Tamborine Mountain College is an independent, co-educational, nondenominational school serving the hinterland community since 1995 as a secondary campus. The College successfully negotiated the purchase of the adjoining property in 2013, which created the opportunity for expansion. Having established that there is a demand on the mountain for private primary independent education, the College made application for accreditation to enable it to offer years Prep to 6 – this has been approved. Council has also given approval with conditions, which the College intends to meet in order to establish the primary campus on the recently acquired property. The College will now be a P-12 campus in 2015, which completes what is the natural progression of an independent school. Yr 7 will become part of secondary education in 2015. Tamborine Mountain College is accommodating this by implementing Stage 3 of its Secondary Master Plan - four fabulous new classrooms, which will be opened in October 2014. The Primary campus also has a Master Plan which begins with the refurbishment in 2014 of the existing premises on the property with stages of development planned, following similar architectural design as the secondary campus, but all on ground level.
Drawing of the new Tamborine Mountain College primary school campus adjacent to the existing high school campus
For the Primary campus the College will adhere to the Australian Curriculum and Early Years Curriculum Guidelines, with play as a context for learning. In addition, French will be introduced to the College to offer a language which is aligned with our Pacific neighbours and forms part of the College European trip, which is on offer at secondary level. Starting French in Primary will have College students well equipped for
such a wonderful experience overseas. Performing Arts will be a focus area, with Drama, art and Music developed through an excellence program. The College has an excellent reputation, academically and socially. It has a philosophy of a student-centred, safe learning environment with a family-like feel. Each year level is restricted to two classes only, bearing the College’s motto “Victory & Valour”, thereby students belong to either Vic or Val Form right through to Year 12. The College boasts an academic core with the majority of students going onto university, however they do cater for individual needs, offering traineeships and apprenticeships as part of the Yr 10 career set plan. They also value tradition and students are groomed in good manners and politeness in a family-like atmosphere. Mr Nicholls, who founded the College in 1995, had a dream for a complete campus but it was not possible to achieve it in his lifetime. The College Board, headed by Chairman Mr Michael Kyle, along with the Principal Mrs June Melbourne and her staff, have worked tirelessly to make the development of the primary school happen. Many of the College families have wanted a complete campus of P-12 for many years and now the dream has come true.

Watercolours Capture Hinterland History
Exceptionally detailed watercolours featuring familiar Hinterland scenes and forgotten local history are on display in Edwin Bode: Pioneering Artist of the Gold Coast Hinterland at Gold Coast City Gallery. The exhibition features more than 42 works by Hinterland artist Edwin Bode, showcasing his exceptional ability to capture the beauty of the Gold Coast Hinterland landscape with almost photographic realism. Rarely seen private paintings from the descendants of the pioneers are on loan for this special exhibition allowing audiences a unique perspective into Bode’s artistic development not usually on display beyond private walls. Landscapes, homesteads and farms near Canungra, Wonglepong and Mt Tambourine all feature in the exhibition, as well as early artwork capturing familiar scenes from Brisbane, Sydney and nearby Burleigh. The exhibition gives insight into the Gold Coast’s pioneering history and features the Hinterland community at work, play and off to war in 1914.
A special inclusion in the exhibition is Bode’s interest in the emerging medium of photography. Prints made from his photographs will be shown alongside his paintings, allowing viewers to compare his visual approaches. Bode’s blackand-white photographs were once used to as postcards to promote Hinterland tourism, as evidenced by the signature stamped on his commercial photographs. English-born Edwin Bode (18591926) arrived in tropical Queensland plagued by poor health in 1882. The itinerant artist worked at odd jobs including at the Ipswich Lime Pits and Burley Sawmills in Coomera, and eventually owned a 160-acre orange grove where he planted 300 trees, shipping the produce to Brisbane. The exhibition continues until Sunday, 27th July 2014 and features a number of public programs including an artist masterclass on watercolours lead by Owen Thompson.

Q – The tenancy agreement is about to expire and we want to move back into the property. Will the tenant automatically have to vacate the property? A – For a tenant to lawfully vacate the property the tenancy must be terminated in accordance with legislation requirements. There have been situations where both the tenant and landlord have assumed that when the tenancy agreement has an end date then the tenancy automatically terminates. This is not the case. A tenancy can be terminated if: • The agent/landlord gives the tenant notice • The tenant gives the agent notice • The property is abandoned • The Tribunal orders • By mutual agreement There are also different notice periods that must be given at different times of the tenancy and depending on the reason i.e. end of fixed-term tenancy, periodic agreement, property sold or landlord moving into the property. If you want to move back into your rental property it is important that you discuss this with your property manager. Or, if you would like more details on the notice periods, please go to the RTA website. Disclaimer: This article is intended for general information only and no person should rely on its contents. It's a Dog's Life with Beau Kenny, Dog
It’s all about being friendly ... Last week, I jumped into the Editor’s chair. Admitedly my leash was tied to the chair and there wasn’t anywhere else to go (except the floor which wasn’t as comfortable). Now some people would say that it wasn’t a good place for a dog to be. Fronting the local paper, keeping and eye on what is going on, greeting both the bank and newspaper clients on arrival. Well, let’s look at it this way ... who else is going to greet you with the love and enthusiasm of a friendly, human-loving Kelpie? No offence meant (sure sign I’m about to say something offensive) but I’ve never seen a human give a complete stranger the welcome I can give them! So why is that? Well, maybe it’s because we dogs don’t care if we show people we love them. We don’t event think ‘do I look dumb being this affectionate?’. We just do what we feel. I wonder what the world would be like if people acted more like dogs? More affection, or just a lot more sniffing posts and things? Thank you to all the people who were in the shop that day and gave me lots of pats. It was great to meet you all! And if you see me sitting on the floor in The Canungra Times office, put in a word for my own chair, will you?

Your Chance to Own a Bank
On behalf of the volunteer members of the Canungra & District Community Bank Steering Committee, I would like to thank everyone who has supported the campaign to date, with pledges to buy shares and moving banking business, and also to Keer Moriarty for opening the Bendigo Bank Agency. I am also greatly appreciative of the members of the Steering Committee who are volunteering their time to the project. The recent opening of the Agency is a major stepping stone within the campaign and is located within The Canungra Times office. This is a convenience centre for your banking needs with over the counter transactions, account opening and banking enquiries, and Mobile Manager, Gay Hider, who can look after your lending and banking needs. Gay is available by appointment through the agency. The Agency will remain in town until the next phases of the campaign are completed and the Branch opens. The campaign to get a full service Canungra & District Community Bank®
is still progressing and receiving great support, with increased interest since the opening of the Agency. The campaign has two major parts, the first is to seek pledges from you, our community, neighbours, friends and relatives, to purchase shares in our local Community Bank®. We have a target of $750,000 in pledges that we have to reach to move to the feasibility study phase. To date, there is over $390,000 pledged. This is a community based model and as a shareholder, you own shares within the local Canungra & District Community Bank® and the benefits stay within our community. Once the prospectus is issued and the share allocation filled, the only way to buy shares will be via a waiting list. Don’t miss your opportunity to be a foundation shareholder, with pledges starting at $500, and register your support today by filling out a pledge form available from The Canungra Times, Canungra Newsagency, The Outpost Café, the Facebook page or one of the street stalls held around town. The second part of the process is banking business. With the agency now
open in town, it is convenient and easy to open accounts and do over the counter transactions. Once the Bank opens, more “business on the books” will provide a solid foundation for the business and the sooner the bank becomes profitable. Profits are then returned to the community through grants and investment, and to shareholders through dividends. With 80% of the net profit being returned to our community, imagine what that could do for local groups and organisations. So the next time you see the Bendigo Bank stall or banners around town, come and say hello, we are volunteers who already know the benefits of the Bendigo Bank Community Bank Model and would love to talk to you about it. To keep up to date with events and where we are up to with meeting our targets, have a look at our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/CanungraCommunityBank, or visit our recently opened agency in the Canungra Times Office open Monday, Wednesday, Friday 9:30 am - 2:30 pm. Time for Health
Are you constantly rushing? Juggling meetings, family, work, school pick-ups, sporting events, promising yourself you will get organised next week? The constant stress we inflict on ourselves to get everything done affects our mental state and ultimately our physical health. Are you in charge of your time, or is your life running you? Disorganised? Leaving something half finished to move onto the next thing? There’s a saying “fail to plan, and plan to fail”. At the start of each day spend 10 minutes to plan your day. Prioritise what needs to be done, clear the clutter around you and remove distractions turn off Facebook! Finish one task fully before moving on, or the unfinished business clutters your mind, leave you feeling overwhelmed and unable to be fully productive on the next task. Are you ‘saving time’ on a takeaway dinner yet diminishing your time because you are affecting your health? Plan meals in advance, buy groceries for the week, get something out of the freezer for dinner, take food with you if you are out for the day. Grabbing a takeaway seems like you are saving time, but time how long it takes to drive and wait for your order, and notice how sluggish you feel afterwards. A quick nutritious meal prepared at home is faster, cheaper and leaves you with more energy to live life. Do you grab a coffee or soft drink to give you energy? The insulin spike these cause leave you feeling sluggish again later. Drink water instead which flushes toxins out of your body, keep your brain alert, meaning you can be more productive and have energy for longer. Prevent your life from affecting your health by sometimes saying NO. Some things can wait. What’s the hurry?
Over weight or Unfit?
Director: Josh Boone. Stars: Shailene Woodley, Ansel Elgort, Nat Wolff. Rated: M. Run Time: 126 minutes.
It’s been a long time since I cried in a movie, but with a storyline as moving as this one, it is difficult to hold back the tear. Based on John Green’s sixth novel, The Fault in Our Stars is the story of Gus Anzel Elgort) and Hazel (Shailene Woodley), two teenagers affected by cancer. Hazel has thyroid cancer which has spread to her lungs (consequently she carries oxygen at all times) and Gus had osteosarcoma, but he is now cancer-free after having his leg amputated. The pair meet at a cancer support group and their sense of humour and keen wit sees an immediate attraction. The chemistry between the two works very well in the film. In fact all of the cast are outstanding in their roles. Special mention must go to Nat Wolff who plays Gus’ best friend, Isaac. Isaac loses his girlfriend (they break up) and then his sight (due to cancer). Wolff manages to portray his character in such a way that the viewers never pity him. But they can empathise with his pain and bravery.
All the characters in this film are brave. But they also embrace life. They live and breathe every day like it is their last - because they know it could be. There is some wonderful dialogue in The Fault in Our Stars and the storyline is very close to John Green’s novel. While I’m sure there it will appeal to Green’s readers and to the teenage market, as an adult I found the interaction between Hazel and her parents an interesting aspect of the film. How does a parent deal with a child with a terminal illness? Green has an uncanny insight into this world. Some of the storyline is quite far fetched, but the basic premise of girl meets boy, fall in love etc is engaging and moving. You will think about this film afterwards, you will be moved by Green’s dialogue, by the interaction between the characters and by the story itself. Unless you have a heart of stone, you won’t be able to help it. That’s the thing about this film. It demands to be felt.

CANUNGRA HOTEL Rodeo - Saturday 12 July
It’s Time for the Bulls!
As the weather cools, it’s time for the bulls, and in true country fashion the Canungra AH&I Society (Canungra Show Society) will host the Canungra Hotel Rodeo on 12th July. The town’s annual Rodeo will open the gates at 11am with the main events from 2pm at Canungra Show Grounds on Coburg Road, . Being affiliated with the National Rodeo Association, this local event brings out the best competitors in multiple events, offering some of the greatest riding in Australia. There will be a wide range of thrilling true grit events with bull riding, bareback and saddle bronc
riding, steer wrestling, rope and tie, barrier race, team roping, poddy ride, junior and ladies events and more, so there is something to keep everyone entertained. To see all of the action, be sure to bring a blanket or chair and get set up on the grassy hill overlooking the arena. There will is a licensed bar, food and drink stalls and live music as well as entertainment for the kids. Entry is $20 for adults, $5 for children (under 15 years) and aged pensioners and a family pass for two adults and two children is $45. Tickets are available on at the gate on the day.
Canungra Rodeo is Close to Terry’s Heart By Chloe Pickard
Although he’s never lived in Canungra, the town and its people are close to Terry Sharland’s heart. It’s the place of the rodeo he calls his ‘hometown rodeo’, and he has been involved for approximately 20 years initially as a participant, then judge, then chief organiser. He first became interested in rodeos while in agricultural college in the 1960s, where he, along with some friends, playfully rode on the bulls and horses they were caring for. After college he dabbled in various jobs before joining milk company Pauls and moving to Darwin in 1970 with wife Marilyn, where he both took part and helped organise the Darwin Rodeo. Both his son Brett and daughter Kim were born in Darwin. The family moved back to Brisbane after ten years and then to the Gold Coast, where Terry became President of the Currumbin Horse Club. He and Brett took part in camp drafting there together, which led them to participate in the Canungra Rodeo. He has acted as the chief rodeo organiser since 1993, and it had benefitted from his vision and new ideas. Instead of the usual two judges, he placed two judges down each end of the arena to make judging more efficient. Former Canungra AH& I Society Page 20
Canungra Rodeo Organiser Terry Sharland
Secretary Shona Kraayvanger said Terry Sharland has everyone’s interests at heart. “Terry is a genuine, kind, generous person,” she said. “He would do anything for a friend.” As well as his work in Canungra, Terry has belonged to various rodeo organisations like the National Rodeo Association and has judged rodeos across Queensland. Not even a bull smashing his leg while judging a 2002 rodeo in Gympie has The Canungra Times, July 2014
stopped his passion for the sport, and he has high hopes for the future of the Canungra Rodeo. “It just keeps getting better and better, and we keep pushing it along,” he said. His favourite part of the rodeo are the horse events, particularly the saddle bronc riding which he he took part in when younger. “You get a good cowboy who knows what he’s doing and it’s poetry in motion,” he said.

Pale-Yellow Robin (Tregellasia Capito) By Melissa Whitby For anyone starting out as a birdwatcher, the hardiest birds to identify are the “little brown birds” that are just too quick to be focused on by binoculars! Identification of Australian birds is a skill that takes many years to perfect and requires constant practice. Over the years, I have encountered many bird species, which I have had to spend a lot of time observing before I was confident of identifying them. One such bird is the Pale-Yellow Robin. The Pale-Yellow Robin is a bird species that one literally stumbles across. This small bird is wellknown for being unobtrusive and keeping to the shadows of its tropical rainforest domain. One of the best places to see this robin is at Lamington National Park. Their most noticeable trait is to make a
Pale-Yellow Robin
short flight through the forest and to land sideways on the trunk of a tree. These birds are incredibly bold and are not fazed by human presence. This small bird has a yellow chest and throat, whitish colouring between the beak and eye and an olive-green back. It is worth noting that the Pale-Yellow Robins in North Queensland have brownwhitish colouring between the beak and eye. The Pale-Yellow Robin may be confused with the Eastern Yellow Robin. However, the Eastern Yellow Robin has a distinctive yellow rump. The Pale-Yellow Robin can be seen in tropical North Queensland and coastal Queensland/New South Wales. As mentioned, their favoured habitat is rainforest within these regions. This small robin is relatively common throughout its range. Nesting in South-east Queensland spans from September to December. The nest is cupshaped and decorated with bark, lichens and other plant materials. Two eggs may be laid. Overall, this small bird can be cryptic but is well-worth taking the time to look for. As with all wildlife, once you become familiar with their haunts, they become a lot easier to find and recognise!
Bellah is a friendly girl who loves to have a snuggle every now and then. She prefers her own company, but has previously lived with a cat and dog. She would suit a quiet household and as such, would love a home that is childfree! Ask to meet this sweet girl today- she’d love to welcome you home after a long hard day at work. Bellah is eight years old and is only $80. She is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. Happy Jimbo loves to smile and interact with his human buddies. He is a handsome boy who gets on well with his furry friends, but doesn’t mind being by himself at home for periods of time. He is a big boy and will require a strong owner who will be consistent with his boundaries and rules. He would love trips to the beach and daily exercise will be appreciated. Jimbo is a Boxer cross Irish Wolfhound and is $240. He is vaccinated, desexed and microchipped. With the Sun spending most of the month in Cancer, life is home-like and nurturing. The gods are focussed on feeding you, hugging you and making sure you are properly tucked in when the stars come out to shine. Comfort is your forte. Venus will join the Sun soon, increasing delight. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) Venus spends the first part of the month sailing through Gemini skies. She fills you with mischief and edginess. There could be some clashes between your hankering for delight and your love of comfort and nourishment. Venus doesn’t avoid life for the sake of reputation and security.
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
With the Sun illuminating the constellation of Cancer, you are filled with warmth and vitality. As the weather cools, so your heart warms. Jupiter leaves Cancer later in the month. He has been quietly encouraging you to step out of your comfort zone and grow. His work is done.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

Mars moves into Scorpio. Though it comes as some relief for Mars to leave Libra, it is a case of out of the frying pan into the fire. Libra frustrated you for the lack of impulsive action and the amount of awareness required. Scorpio asks you to dive into emotion with eyes open.

A very exciting astrological event happens towards the end of the month - Jupiter arrives. He is the emperor of the gods. His role in our lives is to bring us empowerment. He is likely to instigate a flare-up of all that is strong powerful, rich and real in you. In the meantime, get ready.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22)
The Sun is in Cancer, encouraging homely pleasures. You are in your comfort zone. Life will look like it is out to settle you down and let you get on with your thing. Relax the fear that existence is out to derail you. It’s not. Let yourself be emotionally swept up and engaged.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Mars leaves Libra this month. This will come as a great relief. Mars, the macho adventurer, is a fish out of water in Libra. He is likely to have gotten antsy in your ambience – and made you antsy in response. Your adrenal glands can settle now. You have had enough fire for now.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
Mars arrives in Scorpio later this month. This will really set the cat amongst the pigeons. Mars is of course the planet of masculine fire. Though he is full-on, he’s not an entirely foreign fit. On a good day, his job is to encourage you to have the adventures that are important to you.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)
Jupiter moves out of Cancer, where he has been swamping you with feeling, into Leo. This completely changes your sense of hope, optimism and possibility. As he heads into fiery Leo, so you sense the possibility of golden opportunity. Be empowered, minus any power trips.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19)
As the Sun goes into Cancer, life invites you to look at your soft underbelly. Goats are hardy animals. The moment hardiness turns into hardness, their life energy goes awry. Hardiness has to work hand in hand with sensitivity and softness. Here is a golden opportunity to be whole.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
Uranus is retrograde. He appears to be going backwards in the sky. He is your guiding light. Uranus’ job is to lead us to a genuine experience of freedom. When he appears to be going backwards, we can truly understand that the freedom we seek is on the inside, not outside.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Drinks on the fourth tee at Canungra Area Golf Club. Photo: Wendy Brown
Neptune is retrograde. He appears to be travelling backwards. The effect this has on you, is to make you reconsider some of the expectations you may have been putting on life. Expectations tend to go hand in hand with disappointment. Once removed, we can get back to our bliss. © M.J.Dean 2014 The Canungra Times, July 2014

Desexing Discounts in July
The National Desexing Network (NDN) is collaborating with vet clinics throughout Australia this July offering discounted desexing prices to encourage people to desex their pets before the spring breeding season. The program was created to help put a stop to the huge numbers of stray and surrendered cats and dogs in Australia’s pounds and shelters. Canungra Veterinary Surgery is participating in this program. St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough, Guild President I recently had the opportunity to catch up with family members whom I do not see all that often. It was a lovely time of bonding and togetherness. Not everyone has family they can catch up with and this can lead to loneliness or emptiness. Do you have a close connection with family and friends? Is there someone you can offer a word of encouragement to, or lend a helping hand, or do a random act of kindness for. Everyone needs to feel wanted and loved. I encourage you to think about your neighbour or someone in need. Remember whatever you give will be given back threefold. Part of the National Council for Reconciliation prayer reads: “you who created all people in your image touch the hearts of the broken, homeless and inflicted and heal their spirits.” This is a very good reminder for us to apply to all people we know or meet. If you feel the need for acceptance, companionship or someone to talk to, St Luke’s is a church offering friendship where just belonging will make you feel good. Come along any Sunday to enjoy the service and a warm cuppa afterwards. We would truly welcome you and make you feel at home. We recently welcomed Jack Peter Lord, his parents Jason and Shannon and their families as Jack was baptised at St Luke’s. Our annual fund raising dinner will be held in St Luke’s on Friday 29th August. This is a great night of fun, friendship and delicious food. All are welcome to attend but you need to book early. Ring me on 5533 7070 to book a seat.

They did well with Mary Groves and Wendy Brown in the Ball Run down. Wendy also won the Most Accurate Drive, (not the longest however). Next Siam Cup Announced for September 2014
The next Muay Thai Siam Cup will be held at Canungra Showgrounds on Saturday 20th September 2014. The first Siam Cup was held on 5th April with seveal local fighters achieving great success and going on to compete at the World Championships in Malaysia. This Cup will be a lead up to the Australian Championship to be held on the Gold Coast in November. Local fighters, Cameron, Joshua, and Samantha Torrens are expected to compete as well as Brodie de Jonge and Zak Tilley. Organiser Jamie Tozeland said these events have been held to enable the
teenagers to fight in front of a local crowd, and also as a fundraising event to help pay for training and travelling costs for the fighter’s families. Jamie trains all five of the local fighters, as well as many more up and coming youngsters, some of whom are training for competition and some for fitness and fun. He is excited about the prospects of all of the fighters and is looking forward to another very successful event on 20th September. For all enquiries about Muay Thai training or the Siam Cup please contact Jamie on 0431 412 488.
Canungra Owls Soccer News
Canungra agency now open
By Bren Dalby
All teams are going quite well and I hope enjoying their soccer! Unfortunately the fundraiser with Ilumimated Water was sadly a flop so anyone who would still like to purchase bottles (and bottles and bottles) of flashing bottles of water complete with pretty snazzy lanyard can do so at any time from soccer! Nothing major to report although I would like people to think about what they might like to take on in the way of a committee position or a task for next year as we are very short in that department! Huge thanks to Trish and Chris O’Connell for organising photos for us this year ... great job and very very much appreciated! Please support our local teams and come along for a canteen snack and brew and help us keep registrations for players at least a bit lower than our competition clubs for next year. Go the Owls !
