Canungra’s Got Talent Canungra’s biggest Talent Quest attracted entrants from as far as Warwick as well as a range of local talent. Organiser Kerry Austin congratulated all performers on their acts and thanked everyone who assisted her in making the day a success. Judge Bren Dalby said the judges were all “sensationally impressed”. “Each of us was taken with different acts but there was one performance we all agreed on and that was Kailee the Contortionist. Unbelievable, and had the crowd totally absorbed,” she said. The winners on the day were: First half of the show: 1st place: Inspire Studios-Mini Jazz 2nd place: Tamiki 3rd place: Emma-Jane Collins Second half of the show: 1st place: Kailee Behrendorff 2nd place: Ashleigh Cosgrove 3rd place: Mercedez Austin, Emma Connelly and Monique Toohey. On the Canungra’s Got Talent Facebook page, Kerry made special mention of school bus driver Emily Spurr who formed the Pine Creek Bus Choir. The children sang on the bus on the way to and from school and performed with Emily (singing and playing guitar). For many of those children it was the first time they had performed in public. Country music duo Dubbo Turner and Annette Williams travelled from Warwick to perform several classic country songs for the crowd. Other performers on the day were: Mercedez Austin; Obie Austin; Chevy

Scenic Rim Welcomes New Australian Citizens

Twenty-four local residents took the final step in their journey to become Australian citizens in an extension to the 2015 Queensland Day celebrations. The ceremony was held at The Centre Beaudesert with Mayor John Brent officiating along with Deputy Mayor Virginia West and other Scenic Rim Councillors who each presented the new citizens with a plant and certificate. Cr Brent said he was proud to welcome the new citizens who come from countries including South Africa, India, New Zealand, Guam and the Philippines. "Becoming an Australian citizen means something different for everyone, but it is an important day in their lives and I am glad they've chosen to share it with us here in the Scenic Rim", Cr Brent said. "This ceremony is an opportunity for us to put things into perspective and reflect on the meaning of community, and I welcome you all as our newest Australian citizens."

Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause said the area has been very successful in this funding round with 18 community groups receiving grants from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund. “It is wonderful to see so many local organisations receiving grants to fund activities and facilities for our community,” Mr Krause said. “This outcome would not have occurred without volunteers giving their time and energy to complete the grant application process.” “The next round of Gambling Community Benefit Fund opens in mid-July and closes at midnight on 31st August 2015.” Local organisations to receive funding in Round 84 included: • Beechmont Tennis Club - $16,100.00 to Resurface the Tennis Court. • Canungra Bowls Club Inc - $19,650.50 to Install Bore and Water Supply System • The Beaudesert Gymnastics Club Inc $11,714.35 to Purchase Equipment. • Tamborine Mountain Croquet Club Inc $35,000.00 to Install Irrigation System. • Tamborine Mountain Sports Assoc Ltd. $13,631.82 to Purchase a Mower. “I am always happy to provide support for grant applications, contact my office by email to beaudesert@parliament.qld.gov.au or phone 5515 1100 for more information,” said Jon.

Council Delivers $79.4 Million 2015/16 Budget

Projects Put Towns On Right Path

Communities in Boonah, Harrisville and Canungra will benefit from upgrades to local footpaths in 2015-16, with Council to spend more than $250,000 on improvements for pedestrians. Mayor John Brent said in Boonah $84,000 has been allocated to replace the footpath in Railway St between High St and Yeates Ave. “These works will complement the upgrades Council is currently delivering in High St as part of our Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiative,” he said. At Harrisville, $116,000 will be spent on improvements in Hall St outside the local state school, while in Canungra $54,000 has been allocated for footpath replacement in Christie St. “These projects will certainly help to improve amenity and accessibility in those areas,” he said.

Libraries Continuing Improvements

Scenic Rim libraries will benefit from an investment of almost $250,000 in books and resources and the replacement of shelving units, in the 2015-16 financial year, including an approximate $164,000 recurring grant from the State Library of Queensland. Mayor John Brent said the replacement of aged shelves will also be funded to ensure the safe storage of library materials and to increase accessibility for library patrons. “Council will be investing $244,000 into purchasing and replacing books, magazines, DVDs and CDs, as well as digital resources,” Cr Brent said. “This is a significant investment as Council strives to create collections which reflect community interests and remain current by ensuring that at least half the collection is less than five years old.” Council’s catalogue of resources currently boasts twelve different types of digital material free for use by library card holders and includes an English literacy learning platform, online magazines, language learning facilities and a free driver education program.

Scenic Rim Regional Council has delivered a $79.4 million 2015-16 Budget with improvements to the region’s roads and bridges remaining a priority for expenditure. Mayor John Brent said in 2015-16 Council would inject almost $22.7 million into road and bridge maintenance and improvements. “Spending on roads and bridges will increase by 7% , another record commitment to building the infrastructure our region needs,” he said. “Over the past six years we have increased expenditure in this vital area by more than 40%. This is in addition to the support we have received under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements to restore damaged infrastructure. “Our focus remains firmly fixed on the delivery of core services and infrastructure to the Scenic Rim community, providing value for money outcomes for our ratepayers and the long-term financial sustainability of Council. “In 2015-16 we will continue to invest in the maintenance of our community facilities with an increase in expenditure of almost 4%, while community and cultural services will benefit from a 2.5% boost.” Key expenditure for Council 2015-16 includes: Roads and Bridges $22.68 million, Waste Operations $6.41 million, Facilities $5.83 million, Parks and Gardens $2.54 million, Community and Culture $4.80 million, Planning $2.79 million, Health, Building and Environment $4.31 million, Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages $1 million. Cr Brent said Council had sought to deliver a 2015-16 Budget which was both fiscally responsible and financially sustainable, and which allowed the organisation to continue to build for the future. “Council’s operating expenditure per capita has remained constant for the past three years. Additional revenues generated through rating outcomes and efficiency savings achieved by Council have been directed to new capital initiatives, such as our Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages program,” he said. Cr Brent said in 2015-16, there would be an increase in the minimum general rate of 2.5% for owner occupied residential properties. “The outcome of this determination means that in real terms more than half the households in our region will receive a rate increase of 2.5% and, in some cases, less than this,” he said. In accordance with Section 116 of the Local Government Regulation 2012 Council has introduced a 15% rate cap in the 2015-16 financial year on residential properties in order to limit the maximum general rate increase that could result from changes in land valuations and other factors.

Headling the entertainment at Canungra Show this year - Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express

FoodWorks Brings Rooftop Express to Town

This year grab your seats at the Canungra Show on 22nd August for a night time Wild West Show spectacular not to be missed. The Canungra FoodWorks Rooftop Express is a first class arena spectacular show that features world first stunts, true blue Australian comedy and awe-inspiring horsemanship. It’s loveable bush characters and amusing storyline encourages crowd participation and family fun. A must see for anyone who ever wanted to put on a cowboy hat. This Production has headlined at the Brisbane Royal Show 2013, the Royal Melbourne 2014 and performed for Her Royal Highness Princess Anne when she visited Queensland. The Production pays homage to our primary industries and shows how the bush will continue to prosper in today’s modern Australia. There is something for all ages with horses, cattle, comedy and quad bikes keeping everyone entertained. Many of the performers have performed in the Australian Outback Spectacular and will give one performance only in Canungra - a great opportunity for all the family to enjoy this world-class production for the cost of entry to the Show, thanks to Canungra FoodWorks’ sponsorship of the production. The fun doesn’t end there! Canungra Show has an amazing line up of entertainment this year with the old favourites returning as well as some amazing new attractions. Crowd participation is a must with entries called for the Bubble Football Teams and prior to the Show. This is a fun 10 a side game for two teams which will be played in the main ring following the horse events. For the first time at Canungra that great Aussie tradition, Dunny Races (sponsored by Aussie Lifestyle Properties), will be held. Teams of five will complete an obstacle course with their Dunny - one person sitting on the throne with the other four pushing and pulling it to the finish line! The evening entertainment will end with the Bendigo Bank Fireworks Spectacular at 7pm and music by the Point O Five for those who want to party on afterwards. For more information, check in the Show Schedule (available soon), web site www.canungrashowsociety.org and Facebook page.

The most important thing about putting entries in the Canungra Showon 22nd August, is to read the classes carefully in the Show Schedule. Entries are judged on criteria which is uniform across all shows. Present your exhibit exactly as it is stated in the schedule. For example, in the cooking section points may be deducted if you have decorated your cake to make it look pretty when in fact your cake is judged on the taste. The schedule will tell you what, if any, decoration is required. If you have any questions contact the Chief Steward beforehand. Fill out the entry form in the Show schedule or on our web page www.canungrashowsociety.org. If you need help we can give this to you when you bring in your entries. Take your entires to the Showground between 1pm and 6.30pm on Friday 21st August. The major prize in the Main Pavilion this year is donated by O’Reilly’s Rainforest Resort and is a night for two at the resort valued at $295. The prize is for the Champion Exhibitor of the Pavilion. This is awarded to the person with the most points achieved in the pavilion which covers cookery, needlework, photography, horticulture and fruit and vegetables. Each Section has prizes for the Most Successful Exhibitor and Champion Exhibit. There are also other special prizes for particular classes with details in the Show Schedule. However, any exhibitor will tell you it is for the fun of exhibiting and not the prize. The Canungra Show has two Pavilions – the Arts and Craft Pavilion and the Main Pavilion. We have around 1,000 entries each year and invite everyone to start exhibiting. Judging is done on Friday night and the pavilions are open on Show day from 9am until 7pm. Exhibits can be collected on Sunday between 9.30am and 10.30pm. If you would like to help on Friday afternoon taking exhibits and displaying them; or can assist in the pavilions on Saturday or Sunday please contact the Chief Steward on 0408 740 764 or the Show Secretary on 0434 274 795 prior to the Show. We will welcome anyone who would like to help.

Aletheia - An Immersive Theatre Experience

Aletheia is an immersive theatre experience that treats guests to a historical tour, preshow entertainment, canapés and performance (altogether totaling three hours) on the hauntingly beautiful Garden Hill property in Queensland’s Lost World. This gripping new work by Goat Track Theatre is the outcome of a community arts and cultural development project – “Cries of the Kalwun,” that has been operating across the region of Scenic Rim throughout 2014/2015. It has engaged more than 70 young people from the region in collaboration with museums, local high schools, military personnel and community service organisations. The Project has enabled young people to have a response to what they consider the utility of history and to speak to their concerns about how our stories are constructed. The result is not just an intelligent and compelling new work on the nature of memory but a terrifying “looking glass” through which we are compelled to question the substance of all history. After surviving an ambush Aletheia has returned form Afghanistan a hero. But she has lost a comrade, and her memory. Tomorrow she will be awarded the Victoria Cross for an act of bravery she knows nothing about. Now Aletheia is asleep. Her alarm will wake her in one hour. Her memories have been locked away and she must fight through the deepest recesses of her mind to reclaim her history before the alarm sounds and her memories are lost forever. She has left the war in Afghanistan to fight this new war – in her head. Piece by painful piece, she begins to reconstruct her story, leading her to a truth she would rather forget. Aletheia is suitable for audiences over 15 years and will be performed at the Historical Dray Shed, Garden Hill, Lost World, 3268 Kerry Rd, Darlington on 30th and 31st July; 1st, 2nd, 7th, 8th, 9th 14th, 15th August and 16th August. Tickets available at www.goattracktheatre.com/events.

Can You Help To Bring Them Home?

In May, the Australian Government announced an offer to pay to repatriate and rebury 27 Australian servicemen and eight family members of servicemen who currently lie in the Terendak cemetery. The Government is attempting to contact a number of families it has so far been unable to reach. The planned repatriation, organised by the Office of Australian War Graves, would take place in June next year, with the dead to be welcomed home with full military honours. However, no individual’s remains will be returned to Australia if there is not support from close family members. The government is attempting to contact the families of Gunner Thomas Checkley (131st Divisional Locating Battery, died 5/8/66); Private Norman Allen (7th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, died 10/11/67); Signalman Kenneth Charles Johnson (208 Commonwealth Signal Squadron, died 3/7/65); and relatives of Kathleen Patricia Ridley, wife of James Herbert Ridley (8th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment died 20/12/67). Families who do not take up the offer of repatriation from Terendak are assured the graves will continue to be maintained by the Office of Australian War Graves. Internship Serves A Priceless Culinary Experience

Three Scenic Rim culinary interns were selected as part of the Scenic Rim’s Eat Local Week partnership with QAGOMA. Local caterer Kate Raymont from Hinterland Harvest Catering joined Sam Slavery from The Royal Hotel Harrisville and Terri Taylor from the Tamborine Mountain Cooking School. The trio spent Friday and Saturday working alongside the GOMA Restaurant kitchen team led by Executive Chef, Josue Lopez, preparing the sevencourse Scenic Rim degustation for guests. Kate says the experience was inspiring and full of experiences that she will incorporate into her catering business, Hinterland Harvest Catering. “It was just totally inspiring to be in a kitchen full of energy and creativity, working with chefs who are really at the cutting edge of their industry,” says Kate. “It’s really inspired me to use more local produce and to use food in different ways through layering. It’s not longer about serving up some roasted carrots. I was thinking about how art and styling and decorating now goes into food. “It’s about developing layers, a bit like you would a painting. Colour has a big impact in dishes and some of the meals we produced on Saturday night were like works of art on the plate. “Josh was incredibly generous with his time and knowledge. Once upon a time chefs didn’t give away their secrets, but he said that’s not how he works. He likes everyone to enjoy food. He was so willing to share his knowledge of ingredients and technique with us. “I feel very privileged to have had this experience.” Josh is a keen supporter of local produce, in particular Scenic Rim produce. He included Kalbar carrots on the menu he prepared for the world’s leaders during the G20 Summit in Brisbane. As Scenic Rim Eat Local Week ambassador, Josh will lead a cooking demonstration at the Winter Harvest Festival at Aratula on 4th July. Guests at the degustation dinner enjoyed a full day of touring around some of the Scenic Rim’s producers. A bus left GOMA at 8.30am Saturday and travelled to the Towri Sheep Cheese farm at Allenview, then to Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard, to Fassifern Valley Produce and finally to Scenic Rim Olives. The bus returned to Brisbane at 4.30pm and the guests reconvened at 6.30pm for the seven-course dinner, which incorporated ingredients from the farms they had visited, as well as others. Scenic Rim wines were paired with each course and were sourced from O’Reilly’s Vineyard, Witches Falls Winery, Welgan Estate, Normanby Wines and Bunjurgen Estate Vineyard.

New Venue Brings Crowds to Zest Fest

Zest Fest’s move to the Beechmont Community Hall attracted a record crowd to the event. Organiser Wendy Trulson said they were blessed with the weather but the new venue also gave the event a more intimate, community feel. Wendy said the event was very positive with Zest Fest becoming Beechmont’s ‘main street’ for the day - a chance for people to gather together and enjoy the stalls and workshops on offer. “We had a lot of airplay on ABC Coast FM on Saturday morning as they were talking about Zest Fest,” said Wendy, “So we had a mix of locals and Gold Coasters which made for a great day.”

The 2015 Be Healthy & Active Program built on the success of last year with improved health outcomes for participants, social connections and highly regarded partnerships with sporting clubs and service providers. “Key objectives of the 2015 Be Healthy & Active Program included sustainability, increasing access for the broader community, and maximizing wellbeing outcomes,” Cr Waistell said. Many participants reported feeling better about their overall health and planned to continue with their classes and training sessions. “Many of the participants felt that the Be Healthy and Active program was delivering a number of health benefits including weight loss, stress reduction, improved cardiovascular fitness and increased strength,” he said. Service providers were equally impressed with the social and economic benefits of being engaged in a locally based health and wellbeing program that promoted sustainable partnerships with small business. “Leadership and investment at a local level is vital to achieving improved outcomes and I am pleased the Be Healthy & Active Program provided such positive health and social benefits for the Scenic Rim community. Council has committed to supporting the Be Healthy & Active Program into the future with $20,000 allocated to it in the 2015/16 Budget.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council

2015/16 Budget

Council has recently delivered a $79.4 million budget with a continued focus on improving our ageing roads and bridges and building strong community capacity. This will be the first time in six years that Council’s budget will not include significant funding under NDRRA or flood recovery funding. During this period, the program has resulted in six bridge replacements, 31 bridges repaired, 185km of sealed road repaired, 82km of gravel road repaired, 22 new floodways, eight floodways repaired and 26 slips and scours repaired. Certainly significant work on our transport infrastructure. More than half the owner-occupied residential properties will receive a general rate increase of 2.5% or less, the lowest increase since amalgamations in 2008. This equates to a rise of 54 cents per week or $28pa. A rates cap of 15% has been put in place on the maximum general rate to account for changing land valuation factors. This is a budget to ensure the financial sustainability of Council continues as it has in the past three years with Scenic Rim Council being ranked among one of the most sustainable councils in Queensland. A detailed version of the Budget and Financial Sustainability Strategy 2016-2025 is available on the website www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au and I am very happy to discuss this further with any residents who may wish to contact me.

Positive Youth ACTIVITIES

It was so pleasing to welcome a record number of 37 local high school students into the 2015 Youth Leadership Program recently. Under the guidance of former Olympian and professional development coach Selina Scoble, they will all attain confidence, maturity and leadership skills to set them in good stead for their futures. The Green Army teams have been making spectacular progress of clearing and regenerating the creek bank in the Canungra area, over the past few weeks. Most of the young team members are from Beaudesert and it has been very rewarding to see their confidence develop as they learn new skills and are able to see what a difference their hard work has made. I was pleased to recently visit the site with Mayor John Brent and Federal Member for Wright Scott Buchholz and see the progress the participants had made. The Green Army program is a Federal Government partnership with Council and Campbell Page to create jobs for young people who are in a cycle of unemployment but also to enhance the environment and create future job opportunities.

Eat Local Week

Once again this signature event in the Scenic Rim was a huge success with increased numbers of people attending all events. Thankyou to our local residents who were involved in this event which drew such a lot of media coverage throughout Queensland.

CONDOLENCES

I know the thoughts of our community have been with the family of June Randall and Dr Burnie Elliot, both who sadly passed away recently. June was like a mother to many in Canungra and enjoyed being involved with so many community groups over the years. Dr Burnie had left his practice in Canungra some years ago but was known and respected by so many families in the area. Our thoughts are with both their families at this sad time.

As Chairperson of this advisory group it has been pleasing to see the extensive community work these men have been doing over the last year which has saved community groups and residents considerable labour hours. This financial year, more than $700,000 of work (based on $22.70 per hour) has occurred within the Scenic Rim, Balonne, Maranoa and Murweh Council regions. This has been extensive mowing of show grounds, parks, church grounds, interior and exterior painting, construction of yards and ageing buildings and water quality monitoring.

Have Your Say! Biggest Morning Tea

From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor

What Really Matters Over the past weekend, I had a bit to get done. It was the weekend before the paper had to go to the printer, I was also supposed to get the Show Program done and wanted to get to Zest Fest on Beechmont to take photos for the paper. So, on the Saturday one of the kids starts coughing. Not too badly, but gradually worse until Sunday morning we’re making comments about Whooping Cough (it wasn’t) and Ebola (again, it wasn’t). Well, we ditched the idea of going to Beechmont and decided to stay home. Which was a good decision because at 11am another one of the kids starts vomiting. At this point I have no less to do but I realise what really matters. All I really needed to do that day was look after those kids. Everything else was incidental, everything else could wait. Sometimes I get so busy I lose sight of what really matters, but there is nothing like seeing a child sick to bring you back to reality. In the end, all we have is how we treat other people, how we respond to another person’s illness, suffering, need. Life isn’t about how much you got done or how busy you are. It’s about the times you hold their hand and listen, or hold the bucket and try not to listen!

Dear Keer, After holding another very successful Biggest Morning Tea on Thursday 28th May we would like to thank a few local business for their very generous donations. A huge thanks to My Country Escape, Café Metz, Canungra Post Office, Canungra Pharmacy, FoodWorks, Paragliding QLD, Emma Dusting Silversmith, Instyle Hairdressing, Retro Organics Beauty, Liam Taylor Author, Greenlee Farm, Jo Minnett Scentsy, Alan Bass Milko, Canungra Beauty, Canungra Visitors Information Centre, O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, Lost World Day Spa, Mark Culleton One-on-One Bird Experience, Riverlakes Golf Course, Bidvest and BnB Fresh. With the support of all these wonderful businesses we raised $1,450 for the Cancer Council. Get ready for the Biggest Morning Tea next year! Kind regards, Ali and Sam O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard

Well Being

Hinterland Urged to Get NDIS Ready

With Clancy Beck

The 80/20 Principle

As a business owner I always look for ways to be more efficient and one of my favourites is Pareto’s Law, also known as the 80/20 Principle. The Law was named after Vilfredo Pareto, an economist/ sociologist who lived from 1848 to 1923. He came up with a mathematical formula to demonstrate the uneven distribution of wealth in society, and found that the principle applied across all areas of life. Basically it states that 80% of our results come from 20% of our actions. How can this help with our health? 1. Which 20% of choices or circumstances are causing 80% of your health problems and unhappiness? Eg. a few alcoholic drinks every night, coffee and cake for morning teas, fish and chips or takeaway every week - all might only add up to 20% of your eating habits, but may account for 80% of your health problems like being overweight or lethargic. Which 20% of your actions or choices are resulting in 80% of your desired health outcomes and happiness? The 30 mins of exercise each day, the chicken salad you have for lunch, the 4-8 glasses of water you drink each day, the half hour of meditation etc would all be the things accounting for 80% of your good health. The principle can also apply to the people in our lives. If you look at your friends or family, which 20% of them cause 80% of your grievances, depression or anger? It might be time to prune some of those relationships - any reduction in stress is beneficial to your health! Conversely who are the 20% of people who give you 80% of your enjoyment and propel you forward? These are the rewarding relationships that are good for your heatlh. Aim to hang out with more with those types of people! It seems this principle can be applied to many areas of life. Try and reduce or eliminate the 20% of things which are causing the most grief, and do more of the 20% of things that bring the best outcomes. Less grief and more happiness certainly allows better health.

The Mental Illness Fellowship Queensland (MIFQ) is urging people in the Gold Coast Hinterland to make sure they are fully informed about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). MIFQ is holding an NDIS MI Way Workshop in Canungra, aimed at supporting individuals to ensure they have knowledge, confidence and control when the NDIS is rolled out in Queensland from July 2016. MIFQ Chief Executive Officer Tony Stevenson says the NDIS is a major shift from historic, charitable and welfare models, to a competitive market where people will be able to have choice and control of services and supports in their life. “We are talking about a major power shift that puts people with disabilities, including those with mental health concerns, at the centre of their supports and exercising choice,” says Mr Stevenson. “It’s vital that people who will use the system have a clear understanding of the changes and what their options are,” he said. “These sessions will support people living with mental illness, their families and carers by delivering the most accurate, up-to-date information in a range of formats. “The Information Session will give a great overview of the scheme, while the Workshop is a hands-on way to explore what your life is like now, what your goals and aspirations for the future may be, and how to communicate this to the NDIS.” MIFQ is holding information sessions and workshops in a range of local communities across Queensland for individuals, carers and their families. It has also launched a dedicated website, NDIS MI Way, to help people through the transition, and beyond. A Calendar of Events is also available on the website, showing NDIS MI Way sessions, and any relevant events across Queensland. People can also subscribe to a mailing list and follow NDIS MI Way on Twitter. Details: Workshop - Thursday 9 July, from 9am to 12pm - Canungra School of Arts Hall, Christine Street. Fight the Winter Bugs

Method:

Place 1 Tablespoon of the coconut oil with the onion and garlic into a pan and saute over a medium heat for 1 minute. Add the ginger and turmeric and stir. Add all vegetables and chia seeds, mix well and remove from heat. Place the chickpeas in a food processor and blitz for a few seconds. Add vegetable mix, Parsley, pepper, tamari and corn flour to the food processor and pulse until you have a firm mixture. Using wet hands, divide the mixture into 12, roll into balls, then flatten into patties. Taking care not to overcrowd the pan, fry the patties in the remaining coconut oil, over medium heat for about three minutes each side until golden. Serve with salad or as a burger and enjoy!

Winter is here!! And so are the nasty colds, flu, and tummy bugs. If you can find something natural that supports you through these sick times, you would jump at it, right? Well, here are two recipes you may find useful. Homemade Vapour Rub • 1 tablespoon of Coconut Oil • 4 drops Lemon Essential Oil • 4 drops Peppermint Essential Oil • 4 drops of Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oil • Combine in a small glass jar and keep in the fridge (in hot weather). Apply as often as needed to chest, back, and feet. Immune Support Roll-On • Roller Bottle • Carrier Oil – Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, Olive Oil, or any other carrier oil of your choice. • 20 drops Thieves Essential Oil (special Young Living Blend comprising Clove, Cinnamon Bark, Rosemary, Lemon and Eucalyptus Radiata Essential Oils) • Drop the Thieves Essential Oil into the roller bottle and top up with the carrier oil. You can also add 20 drops of Lemon Oil, 15 drops of Peppermint Oil, and 15 drops of Frankincense Oil for a super-charged immune support roll-on. Liberally roll onto the feet and/or back of the neck when nasty winter bugs are present.

Village Garden Project Grows

Canungra’s community garden, now named the Village Garden Project is still looking for a home, with several locations being investigated. Organiser Alex Griffiths said she is looking for council or community owned land that is easily accessible and centrally located. A launch for the project will be held on Saturday 12th September between 3pm and 6pm. Alex expects that the location will be established by then and she will give a presentation on the Village Garden Project with details of how the Garden will run. Seed and seedlings will be available for sale at the launch and stallholders are invited to come along and make it a market-style affair. Alex is also looking for a face painter and coffee van to be there on the day and for a local community group to run a sausage sizzle. If you have tools at home that aren’t being used, the Village Garden Project will have a space for tool donation at the launch. So put away those unwanted hoes, shovels, rakes and save them for the 12th September where - this is a great opportunity to give something to the community that can be used by all in the future. The Canungra Village Garden Project meets every Monday. For more information contact Alex on 0478 784 719 or email griffiths.a@internode. on.net or check their facebook page Canungra Organic Community Garden.

Feedback Invited On Flying Fox Strategy

The draft Scenic Rim Flying Fox Management Strategy will be released for public consultation following its endorsement by Council. Corporate and Community Services Chair Councillor Nigel Waistell said the purpose of the strategy is to provide direction for the management of the Scenic Rim flying fox population. “At the core of the Flying Fox Strategy is a commitment to ensuring the health and safety of the Scenic Rim community, balanced against the need to provide a habitat for our native wildlife,” Cr Waistell said. Council has identified 11 locations within the Scenic Rima where flying foxes are known to roost. “It is important to act within legislative requirements relating to flying fox roost management, which includes affording protection of the grey-headed flying fox, a species which often roosts within the Scenic Rim.” “This strategy seeks to provide a long-term solution to managing the impact from flying foxes across the region and Council encourages community participation in shaping this document during the upcoming consultation period.” The six-week consultation period will commence on Wednesday 1 July and conclude on Friday 14 August.

AWL Pets of the Month

Chase is a chunky monkey looking for a home to get him back to his optimum weight. He loves to spend a bit of time with his humans, and gets on well with his doggy friends, but is more than happy to spend his time by himself too. As he’s an older boy (9 years old) he won’t need a run around the block anymore, but would be very happy to get out every day for a walk to stretch his legs and keep him fit. He is only $150 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Sassy came in with her sister Cassie who has since found a home - they both had come through the council pound as uncollected animals. She is a sweet little girl who is affectionate and would make a lovely addition to any home. She has been waiting patiently for a few months now (early 2015) for her new home. We’re hoping someone will take an interest in this beautiful kitty soon... Sassy is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Last month’s cat of the month, Bella is still available for adoption. To meet Chase, Sassy, Bella or any of the other animals, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

Nature’s Gems

July is National Desexing Month

Travel Diary 2015 - Tasmania (Pt 2) By Melissa Whitby

Tamborine Mountain and Canungra Veterinary Surgeries in conjunction with the National Desexing Network are launching National Desexing Month in July. A special offer of 15% discount to all dog and cat desexings will apply to desexing operations performed during July 2014. In addition, every dog and cat desexed during this month will also receive a special discount on packets of Frontline for flea and tick prevention. This will be $10 off 3 packs and $20 off 6 packs..while stocks last. Research by the Animal Welfare League of Qld shows that 65% of people who surrender undesexed cats and dogs have not desexed them because they just didn’t get around to it or due to financial circumstances. Desexing promotion and reduced fees can be an important incentive for people to desex their pets and prevent unexpected kittens and puppies. Cats and dogs are safer and happier if desexed. They are less likely to roam, get into fights, be hit by cars or impounded and less likely to get mammary and testicular cancers. Owners often find it easier to care for desexed cats and dogs because they are more homely and affectionate, and are less likely to want to get out of yards and wander. NDN Director Sylvana Wenderhold stated that since the downturn in the economy, shelters and pounds around Australia are struggling with more animals being handed in and fewer animals being adopted. Tamborine Mountain and Canungra Veterinary Surgeries are happy to contribute to National Desexing Month to help prevent the tragedy of unwanted pets. Earlier this year, I travelled with a work colleague to Tasmania on the hunt for its 12 endemic birds. After a visit to Bruny Island and Maria Island, we had achieved our Tassie birding goal! However, we were not finished exploring Tasmania. From Triabunna, we headed north to Freycinet National Park. The township of Coles Bay is located at the entrance of the Park, this provides an excellent array of accommodation and we stayed at the BIG4 lluka on Freycinet. Before exploring the national park, we stopped at the Visitor Centre to obtain information about the walking tracks and wildlife. As time was limited, it was decided to do the Cape Tourville Walk and the Wineglass Bay Lookout Walk. Both of these walking tracks provided stunning views of what Freycinet National Park is known for: granite peaks and sandy beaches. Our views of Wineglass Bay on a clear, fine day were spectacular! After our short but magical stay at Freycinet National Park, we continued north towards Launceston. Being the avid birdwatchers we are, we took one last birdwatching foray at the Tamar Island Wetlands outside Launceston. The Tamar Island Wetlands is managed by the Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service and volunteers play a major role in running the visitor centre and providing information about the wetlands to the public. The Tamar Island Wetlands is home to a variety of birds including Chesnut Teal, Black Swan, Purple Swamphen, Tasmanian Native Hen, Australian Shelduck and Grey Teal. Access to the wetlands is via an extensive boardwalk network which allows all visitors to enjoy the site. For serious birdwatchers, a bird hide is available to observe the wetlands’ many bird species up close and personal! My short bird-watching foray to Tasmania proved to be an incredible experience. My travel companion and I visited some of the most beautiful national parks in Tasmania and we were blown away by the wildlife encounters that we experienced in a short period of time. This will not be the only trip that I do to Tasmania. It is place that I recommend all Australians should visit. Wherever we travelled, the locals were always incredibly friendly and always up for a chat. Tasmania is a nature lover’s paradise and my next trip there, will be on the hunt for the endanWineglass Bay gered Orange-bellied Parrot!

DESIGN BRIEF & RESPONSE Derived from the formal Brief contained in the Service Agreement 1. bring a sense of Structure, Order and Organisation over the whole site through an imaginative layout 2. allow for all the different recreational, productive and functional activities in a unified way 3. to express the site as a unified whole, with sub-zones fitting the overall theme 4. to explore ‘Productive’ practicalities within an imaginative configuration i) extensive perennial and annual beds including herbs, medicinal and cosmetic in raised beds and on ground, and to propose both an easier method and functional configuration ii) augment existing fruit trees in a cordinated way iii) expand the chicken / egg production iv) integrated compost processing location 5. Entries to be strengthened 6. Passive recreation areas to be formalised 7.more shade and coordinated mass planting 8. create a diverse range of nooks for a diverity of ways to use use and enjoy the site 9. propose a configuration for both pedestrian and vehicular access, including on-site garage and workshop. 10. explore the potential for income producing accomodation options with private courtyards

CONCEPT SKETCH

SITE FUNCTION

Radial zoning derived from the site analysis centred on the core of the site, the mid point betwen the house and the upper terrace area. From this point both functional and aesthetic

Activity zones that harmonised both the appearence and functionality of the whole site., as well providing a basis for Staged works depending on priorities

ZONES LIVING: Primary living area outside with Pavilion, higher viewing area and access to all areas further out into the yard OPEN SPACE: Central ordering and Recreational space from which all main aspects of the yard are accessible SERVICE: Carparking or garage space with frequently used elements from which the yard is accessible by vehicle. PRIVATE: Adjacent to the two main bedrooms looking east with potential access to individual private spaces. RAINFOREST: Existing vegetated space as Entry Feature and possible internal spaces. PRODUCTIVE: Planted Beds rfor annuals and perrenials with full exposure to sun PRODUCTIVE: Tree and Orchard crops grouped. Fenced with chook access all round. WORKSHOP: and storage area with access through to the Open Space area. Alternate hangout. VERGE AREA: Maintenance and Visitor Parking

OPTIONS

Option 2

MASS PLANTING

The Options show three alternate Layouts which integrate the Design Brief with the existing site conditions in a designed manner expressed through both the Concept Sketch and Function drawings. i) Option 1 organically irregular broad curves defining the main spaces establish a structured order over the whole site, whilst providing an informal feeling.

ii) Option 2 a more formal geomentric definition to all the main spatial zones imparts a more visually structured order and flow through the whole site with a crisper delineation between the different areas. A greater sense of unity of the whole site , this option would also experineced as far more informal on te ground iii) Option 3 pure rectilinear formality provides the most obvious and striking sense of visual structure and order. The scale of the site and the configuration of the sub--spaces still allows extended views ‘through spaces maintaning a ’big site feel’ within a more manageable layout. Each Option allows for maximised opportunities to include all the desired elements in a unified manner over the whole site The difference zones are structurally acheived by a broadly precise setout, attention to level ground planes, and the degree of edge definition. (eg: aim for pads with gradients of max1:50 falls. The configurations shown will require max 400cut and a similar fill in some locations only)

Green Team News

By Fiona Williams,

greenteamcss@gmail.com The end of another very exciting term for the Green Team. We have continued getting lots of children interested in Gardening Club and a couple of weeks ago we had a very exciting Cooking Club. Our Preps, Year 5, and Year 6 students enjoyed making Chicken Taco cups. Thanks to help from our mums and student leaders we were able to make around 100 healthy, tasty tacos that were enjoyed by all. David Walker of Tamborine Mountain Lions Club, presents Canungra State School Acting Principal, Sheree Maksoud, with a cheque for $5,000.

Lions Club Donation to Speed up the School

Tamborine Village Lions Club has donated $5,000 to Canungra State School to pay for significant upgrades to the School’s ICT systems. Deputy Principal, Cindi Dare said the Lions club have made the generous donation of $5000 to our school to assist with the initial payment for this year to increase the School’s internet bandwidth. “Currently we pay $4000 per year for our current speed,” said Cindi, “Unfortunately this speed does not cope with the everyday technology needs of our school and is a great frustration to our students and staff.” “We have applied to increase our bandwidth which will cost the school $10,000 per year but will allow for speeds at least twice as fast as we have now. “It is a great help to us for the Lions Club to assist with our initial increase in budgeting as that also allows us to free up some finances for other ongoing ICT expenses.” Tamborine Village Lions Club is often able to assist with community projects. For more information contact David Walker by email to tamborinevillagelions@live.com.

We have plans to do another of these days next term for the other classes at school. Next term we will be having a working bee to plant the front prep garden once the council has removed the large trees from that area, please stay tuned to the school newsletter for details.

Venus and Jupiter continue to waltz through Leo, taking you in their wake. This is a time of open-heartedness, openmindedness and general delight in all things. There may be a few growing pains – but hey, they’re growing pains. You are stepping up. Do it with grace and style.

The Sun, Mars and Mercury, are going to be spending time with you. The presence of the Sun ensures that it is your birthday that is leaping out of the calendar. You can cry if you want to. All responses to love and attention are permissible. Mars will drive you - Mercury enlighten you.

LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)

36 38

To get to the warm-hearted aliveness that makes your soul sing, first you will have to move your body. When the blood is humming in our veins, then our heart of hearts starts humming too. Traditionally, you are inclined to find it hard to get moving. Be inspired by the food of love. Mercury is going to spend an inordinate amount of time in the sign of Cancer this month. That means, you are going to discover a bubbling brook of emotion running through you. Accept your feelings as they surface and they will guide you. Reject them and they’ll get out of hand.

With Mars in Cancer, feelings, and what they have to say, are uppermost in your awareness. Are you comfortable with emotions as they surface? Do you dismiss them – or go over the top expressing them? To get to the relationship you want, you will have to enter the floodwaters.

Mercury will be spending most of the coming month in Cancer. You are much more comfortable with feelings than you are given credit for. When they are around, you sense realness, authenticity. And when there’s realness, there’s less likelihood of disruptive hidden agendas.

LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)

The presence of three planets in watery Cancer, ensures you won’t be able to charm your way out of dealing with either your emotions, or those of the people around you. Your sense of harmony and balance is only meaningful when it embraces realness and contrast. Drop your guard.

News from St Luke’s

By Di Ayscough

I am fortunate enough to be on holidays at the moment and therefore I have time to enjoy my home and garden. It also gives me time to stop and take in the beauty which surrounds us - God’s Creation. How lucky we are to live in this beautiful Scenic Rim area, to enjoy nature. Have you noticed some beautiful cloud formations, glorious sunsets and early morning temperatures changing from cold to winter warmth as the sun peeps over the surrounding eucalypt filled blue hills. It is moments like these I am reminded to be thankful for our peace and serenity and living in this area. When recently driving through Nerang I noticed a signboard which reads “This church is prayer conditioned”. This quote also applies to St Luke’s at Canungra. Yes we may wrap ourselves in rugs and turn on the heaters but the best warmth comes from our prayers for our nation, our world and all people. If you are feeling a little lonely or lost we welcome you to the warmth of St Luke’s. The many visitors who come to look inside St Luke’s always comment on the warm atmosphere. You could feel it too. It won’t be long before our Annual Fund Raising Dinner is on. Why not mark Friday 28th August on your calendar. A five course dinner, lots of fun, friendship and entertainment all for $25 per person BYO. Please phone David on 5533 7070 to book your seat. With school holidays upon us, we hope all young people can enjoy their break safely and happily. Until next time I wish you many warm blessings.

Suduko

Solution page 35

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

Aiden Bell-McNee

We are absolutely delighted at the improvement this will make to the facility, attracting more people to enjoy the area and spend time there.

Sportsperson of the Year

Aiden Bell-McNee has been a great sportsperson for many years across a wide array of sports: soccer, swimming, long and short distance running, and other field and track events.

The Canungra Times July 2015

He has excelled in swimming this year, qualifying from school, through districts to regional level in backstroke and breaststroke, and to district level in butterfly. In Cross Country, having won his age group at Tamborine Mountain State High School, Aiden placed 6th at District Cross Country, qualifying for Regional level where he placed a very healthy 24th. As well as these achievements Aiden is a terrific soccer player! He was awarded Best and Fairest by TMSHS for Under 14 soccer, and now plays for Canungra Owls Under 15 team for whom he recently scored a beautiful hat trick! Aiden has started refereeing for soccer and shows great promise as a super and fair referee as his brother Josh did before him. Apart from his sporting accomplishments Aiden, being part of a wonderful and very highly respected family, has impeccable manners and is one of the most charming and helpful young men I have ever had the pleasure to know and work with at soccer. He has many more events to compete in at school so we will hear more of him I am sure!

Canungra Owls Soccer News

By Ray Hickson

By Bren Dalby

The Under 15’s had a terrific win last Friday with the team really pulling together under coach James Tomlinson and manager Lana Rankin, with Chez Tomlinson helping out tremendously. They have battled with age differences and different skill levels as well as all Division 1 and 2 being grouped together at the start of the season but they have kept their heads high and now are on the turn around and we at the Owls are very proud of them. The Daniel Morcombe Day on 9th May was a great success with $490 raised. $5 donated by club for every goal scored on the day and a raffle with vouchers donated by Danny Gordon’s Seafood. Danny and Shelley donate vouchers for seafood for all major home days as well as three $40 vouchers for Daniel’s Day. They have just had a beautiful baby girl, Bella May , and we send them all our very best wishes for their new arrival. Keep an eye out for home games and come down for a $7 meal and support our local players and the club. Canteen helpers have been plentiful and sensationally appreciated! I am looking forward to not having to be in the canteen some Saturdays! Portable dug outs, 6 seaters, have been ordered and should be here soon. These will be great to keep subs, coaches, managers etc. out of the weather and although at this stage we can only afford two, we are hoping at some stage to acquire some more. Anyone who thinks they may be able to help out with a short fortnightly newsletter for the club so everyone knows what’s going on would be appreciated. Go the Owls !!

Canungra Fighters Shine at Siam Cup By Rebecca Torrens

On 6th of June Canungra once again hosted a Siam Cup Muay Thai series fight show, organised by Jamie Tozeland and The Hammer Muay Thai Gym. This fight show was a huge success with 26 fights in total. Canungra Showground was pumping, drawing in crowds of close to 500. Jamie says with the real Thailand feel of the venue it is a true draw card in the sport of Muay Thai. Then add in the fact it is a series based purely on the juniors getting in the ring and you have an awesome event. Hammer’s gym is just a tiny home based set up with only a handful of junior fighters training but each and every one of them give it 100% dedication and the result shine through. The Canungra show draws fighters and crowds from the big professional gyms such as John Wayne Parr’s Boonchu gym on the Gold Coast and also has fighters flying in from Australia wide to be a part of the action. In fact this fight show we even had two girls fly in from New Zealand to be a part of it. Four out of the six local fighters to step into the ring on the day came away with a win after all of them giving it all they had. Zak Tilley, Samantha Torrens and Jacob Kurz all won their fights.

Josh Torrens didn’t get a win this time but after an impressive fight he and his opponent were awarded fight of the night. Rowena Kurz also had her first fight at this show and even though she didn’t win she showed she has a bright Muay Thai future ahead of her. The youngest Hammer fighter, Alicia Kocsmar at five years old had her first Muay Thai fight experience in a demonstration match with a six year old boy. Little Alicia showed what a huge heart she has and after some serious training gave it her all in the ring. The main event was a showstopper - Cameron Torrens stopped his West

Australian opponent with a knockout in the third round of a five round fight. In August two of Canungra’s junior fighters, Zak Tilley and Josh Torrens, head to Thailand to fight in the world titles as part of the Australian team. Thank you to all the sponsors of the day: AQUIS farms, Gypsy ink tattoos beaudesert, Bolo fight wear, Supreme fire sprinklers, Marsden trophies, SRS gold coast, Russ Johnston concreting, action print services, D & R Torrens Carpentry, The Outpost cafe and Sharon Richards photography. The next Canungra Siam Cup will be held in December.
