Laundromat
As businesses started to close for the day on Tuesday 27th June, the boom of an explosion rocked the normally quiet town of Canungra. From the Canungra Laundromat, located in Christie Street, the force of an explosion was felt across D J Smith Park, shaking windows, knocking items from shelves and damaging stock in neighbouring shops. QFES Lt Stuart Spalding said there was a build up of gas which then found an ignition source, causing the explosion. Fortunately, a woman who had come in to use the dryer had gone to her car outside when the explosion occurred.
Fire
Stops
The woman and her small dog, who was also with her, were shaken up but unharmed, however emergency services on site said it was lucky no one was killed. Neighbouring shops, KD’s Antiques and Bean In sustained some damage when the walls and ceiling of the laundromat pushed
out from the explosion. An ambulance, police and three fire engines were on the scene quickly. Christie Street was closed in both directions for over an hour while the site was secured and emergency services ensured there was no risk of further explosions.
the
Town
Lt Spalding said once the gas was isolated the fire went out. Vehicles were diverted to Coburg Road to avoid the scene, however this caused further traffic problems with the single lane causeway unable to handle the amount of traffic and a line of cars along Beaudesert Nerang Road in both directions. While inconvenient, it was quickly cleared once the road was reopened. Laundromat owner, Lawrie Phillips said there was very little structural damage and repairs were being carried out on the roof, walls and front doors. The Laundromat should reopen on Friday 7th July.

The Canungra Times - July 2017
What the Budget Means for Canungra
Scenic Rim Regional Council’s 2017-18 Budget was brought down by Mayor Greg Christensen on 15th June 2017.
Rates
The Mayor said he was pleased to announce Council is delivering the lowest rating outcome in nearly a decade for Scenic Rim. “Households with a modest 1.4 per cent rise in the minimum general rate for residential and rural categories. For a principal place of residence on the minimum general rate, it represents a difference of $16 or just over 30 cents per week,” he said. “Principal place of residence properties not on the minimum general rate will receive a two per cent rise. This year, 90 per cent of all rateable properties in the Scenic Rim will receive a rating outcome of three per cent or less.”
Road
and
Bridges
Council’s budget includes funding for the replacement of several timber bridges - Sharp Bridge and Botan Creek Bridge at Witheren, and Back Creek Bridge at Beechmont as well as Ferguson Reserve Bridge at Allenview. Sharp Bridge is to be rebuilt at a height of 2.8 metres above the current
bridge, greatly reducing the incidence of flooding over that waterway. “The renewal of these bridges will be welcomed not only by Scenic Rim residents but also the ever-increasing number of visitors to our region - mostly daytrippers - who currently contribute $150 million annually to our local economy,” Cr Christensen said. “I acknowledge the valued assistance of the Commonwealth Government in providing co-funding support through the Bridges Renewal Program to replace three of the four Scenic Rim bridges replaced in 2016-17. “Council has applied for similar support for nine bridges we have programmed for replacement over the next two years, including the four planned for 2017-18.” Council is set to ramp up the reconstruction process to restore local infrastructure damaged by storms and flooding during ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie. $43 million has been allocated in Council’s 2017-18 Budget for disaster restoration projects. This will be jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments under the National Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA) and auspiced by the Queensland Reconstruction Authority.
Continuing the focus on infrastructure, Beechmont Road will be upgraded from Millie Court to Upper Coomera Road at a cost of approximately $1.7 million.
Parklands
Mayor Greg Christensen said the allocation of $1.04 million to Council’s Playground Strategy in the Budget was part of a 10-year investment program in providing an educational and engaging experience for Scenic Rim families and visitors to the region. D J Smith Park at Canungra, Jubilee Park in Beaudesert and Billabong Park at Kooralbyn will be transformed by exciting new adventure playgrounds in 2017-18. D J Smith Park at Canungra will gain more open space as well as a play area featuring a treehouse, child-size mouse’s house and double swings. The starting blocks at Canungra Swimming Pool will also be replaced as part of upgrades and maintenance to parks and recreation facilities across the Scenic Rim.
Grants
Cr Virginia West said Council has increased their Community and Environmental, and Sport and Recreation Grants.
Council Notices Scenic Rim Regional Council Rates Council rates notices will be mailed to residents on 17 July and are payable by Thursday 17 August 2017. If you do not receive your rates notice in the normal course of post, please contact Council.

Cowboy
Preacher
Tim Kelly was a rodeo cowboy for 20 years. After winning the title of Under 21 Saddle Bronc Champion at the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Canada, at 19 years of age, he returned to Australia to win the 1979 All-Around Champion in the Southeast Queensland Rodeo Riders Association, now known as the National Rodeo Association. Tim competed in Saddle Bronc, Bareback Bronc, Bull Riding, Calf-roping and Steer Wrestling. Despite success in the rodeo arena and living out what he had dreamed of since he was five years old, Tim still wasn’t at peace. At the World Cup Rodeo in Melbourne in 1982, Tim heard about God in a way that he hadn’t before, in a way that held meaning for everyday life, and showed him real purpose for his life. In 1986, he began Rodeo Cowboy Ministries Australia, and for 31 years has ministered on the rodeo circuit and to the people who live and work on the land. Tim has a heart to bring hope and purpose to people in remote areas. Tim has also shared his knowledge and experience in saddle bronc and bull riding through clinics and schools for the past 35 years, and he and his wife Laura run rodeo schools at their property near Kingaroy, Queensland.

The Reality of Turning Canungra Pink
A new play, written by local resident, Becky Bell-McNee will be performed as part of Turning Canungra Pink and local performers are being sought to take part. Cancer has unfortunately played a major part in Becky’s life, with many older family members passing away from cancer related illnesses. Becky wrote the play after her son, Josh, had treatment for a brain tumour; and her good friend Lisa Fay, lost her battle with cancer in 2009. Josh recently celebrated his 21st birthday. The play follows the diagnosis and treatment of a woman with breast cancer and focuses on how she and her family deal with the illness. Turning Canungra Pink Coordinator, Keer Moriarty said the play will be an important part of the annual cancer fundraiser. “Turning Canungra Pink is all about raising money and awareness of cancer,” she said, “I can’t think of a better way to do that than by telling the story of someone battling the illness.” Auditions will be held at Moriarty Park Hall on 15th and 16th July from 2pm. Performers will need to commit to regular rehearals and assistance is also sought for back stage positions such as sets, lighting and sound. Becky hopes to hold performances

The Canungra Times - July 2017
TO 2nd JULY - IN THE SCENIC RIM A record 12,000 people flocked to the Winter Harvest Festival on Saturday 1st July to celebrate the Scenic Rim’s world class produce and the benefits of eating and drinking local, with an estimated total of 30,000 people attending Eat Local Week events throughout the region. The Eat Local Week signature event was a feast of the Scenic Rim’s produce and people and attracted visitors from Brisbane, the Gold Coast, Ipswich, Toowoomba and surrounding regions. Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk arrived with her father Henry, a former Queensland Minister for Primary Industries, and spent two hours chatting to locals and officiating the hotly-contested Tractor Pulling Competition. “The Winter Harvest Festival plates up a delicious array of food for visitors, highlighting the quality and range of produce available on Brisbane’s doorstep,” Ms Palaszczuk said. “I had the opportunity to visit the region following Tropical Cyclone Debbie and met with producers and toured the affected areas. It is particularly heartening to see such a bumper crop of visitors this year – three months after Tropical Cyclone Debbie hit the region.” Caudan Street Kitchen held a beautiful lunch at Sarabah Estate on Sunday 2nd July, finishing off Scenic Rim Eat Local Week with a fun, relaxing event combining local food with a Mauritian theme. Scenic Rim Eat Local Week 2018 will be held from 30th June to 8th July.
What a generous Community we live in!
While raising awareness of the Mater Little Miracles Foundation, we approached businesses in town for donations to make up an Easter basket to be raffled. Our local businesses contributed a fabulous selection of gifts which allowed us to make up three Easter baskets. Bendigo Bank held a Casual for a Cause fundraising day and our Branch Staff dressed in ‘Scrubs’ for some fun. All funds raised were donated to the Mater Little Miracles Foundation. On Tuesday 20th June we held a “thank you” morning tea at Canungra Hub to show our appreciation to all the businesses who donated. When you choose to be a customer at Canungra & District Community Bank® Branch, you make a decision that benefits you and your community. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch
Its Almost Show Time!
and Services Club By Col Lee President, Canungra RSL Sub-Branch RSL Clubs (many now known as Service Clubs) were set up around the time of World War II and was the social hub for ex-serving members who would gather in makeshift buildings built by RSL members. As clubs became bigger and with the introduction of liquor licenses, gaming licences and many corporate laws, Sub-Branches decided to lease the social side of the club to another identity by way of a board of management. Today, the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch and the Canungra Services Club are two separate entities, even though the Canungra Services Club is situated on land owned by the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch. The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch and the Canungra Services Club each have their own elected management committees, constitutions and by-laws, eligibility criteria and membership. Canungra Services Club’s membership is open to all eligible residents of Canungra and their families. The Canungra Services Club board of management is the same board that oversees the Nerang Services Club. Canungra RSL Sub-Branch membership is open to all serving and ex-serving members of the Australian Defence Forces and allied forces. The role of the Sub-Branch is to care for the welfare of serving and ex-serving members of the ADF and to organise / conduct ceremonial activities such as ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.

Members of the Canungra area wishing to participate are most welcome, and anyone wishing to lay a wreath are encouraged to do so. The service will finish around 11.00am.
Canungra Show is coming up on 26th August so it is time to start thinking about your entries. There is something for everyone this year - from the box utes for the youngsters to classic cars for the young at heart! The program will be available mid-July on the Canungra Show Society’s web site and from local businesses in hard copy. The most important thing about entering is to read the classes carefully. Entries are judged on a certain criteria which are uniform across all shows. Present your exhibit exactly as it is stated in the schedule. For example, in the cooking section points may be deducted if you have decorated your cake to make it look pretty when in fact your cake is judged on the taste. Chalking it up at My Country Escape
It’s not often you find that perfect partner ship, but that is exactly what has happened between local business My Country Escape and Mezzie + Frank. Mezzie + Frank is the success story of two Queensland women Merran Tedman (Mezzie) and Pam Burchill (Frank) with a background in homewares, interiors and a passion for upcycling furniture. Identifying an uprising in recycling and repurposing old furniture they found their niche in colours suited to the Australian decor and lifestyle. So with a vision they embarked on developing their own range of chalk effects paint and created a home grown brand to offer the Australian marketplace and to rival the international competitors. Mezzie + Frank has a similar business ethos to My Country Escape, with an emphasis on women supporting other women in business and a strong belief in good business ethics, so it was natural that My Country Escape owner, Michelle RoperDennis, was drawn to the paint company with a difference. My Country Escape has been stocking Mezzie + Frank Chalk Effect Paint for some time and they are offering regular workshops for anyone who would like to learn to use this remarkable product.
Michelle and Danielle from My Country Escape
Michelle says the classes are suitable for all levels, and are also a lot of fun. “We’ve been to some of the Master Classes run by Mezzie and Pam which are great fun and we like to run ours in a similar way. Danielle runs the classes and I just put my two cents worth in!” she said. Classes start at 9.15am and finish early to mid afternoon. The cost is $150 which
includes lunch, all materials (bring your own small piece of furniture) and lots of fun! Local silversmith Emma Dusting is also running Silver Workshops on the 8th and 29th August. For bookings and enquiries about the workshops contact Michelle or Danielle on 5543 4042.

Planning for the Future So, I’m not really a Canungra local. I’ve only been here 22 years on and off (a couple of stints in North Queensland and Beaudesert since I moved to Canungra in 1996) but if I had a dollar for every time I heard ‘I moved here because it is a small country town, I don’t want it to change’, I’d be a rich person. For better or worse, things in Canungra will change. The town is in close proximity to Brisbane and the Gold Coast so there will be developments. The trick is to ensure that these developments are in keeping with the aesthetics of the town and will be beneficial to the area now and in the future. Unfortunately we tend not to worry about things that won’t immediately affect us. So when new developments are proposed sometimes we can all be a bit lazy and not look into it too much, until the development is underway and we find we are living with less parking space in the main street, or buildings we think are not in keeping with the country feel of the town. While we have the opportunity, we should look into proposed developments and make sure we, as residents, are happy with what is being proposed. If you have concerns, put a submission in writing to Council. If you think it is a great idea, put that in writing to Council as well. Don’t just wait until it is underway, be aware of what is happening in our town and have your say!

Biggest Morning Tea
We held our annual Biggest Morning Tea fundraiser for the Cancer Council here at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards on Thursday 1st June. We were overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of our community and support by our wonderful local groups and businesses. Thank you to the ladies who come every year and also to the following for their fabulous donations of prizes for our raffles – particularly O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat, Lost World Day Spa, Hot Air, Paragliding QLD, Canungra Info Centre, Canungra Pizza & Pasta, Canungra Pharmacy, My Country Escape, Lydia’s Garden Florist, The Shoe Vault, Canungra Post Office, Canungra Hub, Bidfood, Burleigh Brewing Company, Allan Bass Norco Milko and Canungra Craft Ladies. Also a massive thank you to O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyards who donate Paula’s homemade scones, jam and cream plus the bottomless coffee and tea as well as the beautiful venue. The day was a huge success with over 100 guests and $2868.20 raised for the Cancer Council. Kind regards, Samantha Dusting and Alison Dougherty
Fossil Fuel Extraction in Wright Electorate
Following the Finkel Report release, an independent journalist asked our Federal MP Scott Buchholz to comment on whether the governments future energy policy would include fossil fuel extraction (like coal and coal seam gas) in the Electorate of Wright. Mr Buchholz declined to comment. As the Scenic Rim community has already spent two years fighting coal and coal seam gas (CSG) in this region, it is with profound disappointment that Mr Buchholz does not have a public position when it comes to his current position on future fossil fuel extraction in the Scenic Rim There was huge community opposition in 2012, mobilised under the community group Keep The Scenic Rim Scenic, to the proposed coal mines at Croftby and Barney View, and the drilling of CSG exploration wells at Bromelton, Tamrookum, Beaudesert, Silverdale and Kerry Valley (including the 10-day Kerry-blockade where 15 people were arrested while protesting), it should be pretty clear to Mr Buchholz what local sentiment is towards fossil fuel extraction in this region. But he is tellingly silent on this issue. Has he lost sight of his role as our Federal Member, a public servant who should always represent his constituents views as a priority? It speaks volumes that he has nothing to say on this subject today. In 2012, AFTER the community-driven success of preventing coal and CSG extraction in the Scenic Rim, Mr Buchholz was only too happy to display the signature “Lock the Gate – no coal, no coal seam gas, no gas pipelines” yellow triangle in his Beaudesert office window. His position was clear then, so what has changed? No comment” is not good enough from Scott Buchholz. Innes Larkin, Spokesperson, Keep The Scenic Rim Scenic

Congratulations to Senior Constable Nigel Allsopp (second from the right in photo above) who received the Queensland ANZAC of the Year Award. The award is to honour those who have given service to their fellow Australians and the community in a positive, selfless and compassionate manner. Senior Constable Allsopp has received this award in recognition of his work as the founder and director of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation. It was awarded for Nigel’s dedication to recognising the work of animals in war zones. Nigel was presented with the award at the RSL Queensland State Congress gala dinner in Brisbane. After starting his career as a military working dog handler in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Nigel rose to the rank of dog master and was responsible for all aspects of canine operations and training within the NZ Defence Force. Today he is Senior Constable in the QPS Dog Section Training Specialist Detection Dogs for various government departments. Nigel is also a noted author with who has written two bestsellers, Australian War Dogs and Cry Havoc. Other titles by Nigel include A Centenary of Australian Animals at War, K9 Cops: Police Dogs of the World, Animals in Combat, Smoky the War Dog and The Purple Poppy. One of Nigel’s passions is the history of animals in the Defence Force and he also heads up the Australian War Animals Memorial Organisation Inc. He has arranged for many animal memorials to be erected throughout Australia, to recognise the service that animals provide during times of war.
The culture of sedentary behaviour, (that is when there is little or no physical activity, both at work and during your leisure time) has been found to have significant negative health consequences. When you are seated for a long time (watching TV or at your computer) your muscles become tight. This muscle tightness can restrict optimal blood flow and consequently can cause neck, back and hip pain. As body circulation is impeded, so is the blood circulation to the brain, this can result in brain fog, which means you will have difficulty focusing and thinking. Research even shows that sitting for long periods increases the risk of developing diseases, such as type II diabetes, blood clots and heart disease as well as lung, colon and uterine cancers. Taking regular breaks from sitting is essential to better health. Regular walks to the printer, getting a glass of water or simply walking around the office will help stretch out your muscles and will improve blood circulation throughout your body and to your brain. Additionally, taking your eyes away from the screen will also help prevent eye strain (you can do this by focusing on an object further away every twenty minutes or so). As a result of this research, standing desks have become popular. Many users are reporting less pain and increased productivity using these desks. Some desks are even adjustable giving you the option to either sit or stand. If a standing desk isn’t an option in your office, you can always improvise. As I write this, I have my osteopathic treatment table at its highest setting so I can stand while typing. It is brilliant! This is how I improvised. Standing or height adjustable desks have become popular

Healthy Food, Turmeric Lattes and More!
After moving to new premises last year, In the Raw have morphed once again to include a new cafe within the health food store. Owners Linda and Mark Stollznow and their staff are now serving ‘Joy’ organic coffee along with a range of cakes, slices, savoury muffins all home made in their Boonah wholefoods cafe. For those looking for a delicious treat for lunch you can’t go past the Byron Bay pies - which have gluten free and vegan varieties as well as high quality steak and chicken pies. Linda and Mark have a strong commitment to providing fresh healthy food to their customers. Linda’s long involvement in the Green Shed on Tamborine Mountain, and their own farm, has provided the couple with a wealth of contacts in the local farming community. This means they can provide the freshest organic fruit and vegetables to their customers. They also source quality Australian organic grocery products. Store Manager, Kelly-Joe Uccetta said everyone in the store is passionate about providing our community with a local space where they can assess products they need. “We are happy to order in new products for people - they just need to ask!” said Kelly-Joe.

“It is great working for Linda and Mark because of their commitment to accessing affordable, local organic food from sustainable sources,” she said. “We are using items we stock in the health food store in the cafe such as Byron Bay pies and local raw honey in our hot drinks.” “We are also making some speciality drinks such as turmeric lattes which are really popular with our customers,” she said.
Linda and Mark have also recently opened an In the Raw store in Boonah, giving them greater buying power for customers and access to the range of healthy treats now sold at In the Raw’s cafe. In the Raw is located in Kidston Street, Canungra and is open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.30pm; Saturday from 9am to 2pm and Sunday from 9am to 1pm.

$2,000 for Queensland’s Next Great Young Writer
Entries are now open for State Library of Queensland’s (SLQ) annual Young Writers Award competition, offering $2,000 for the best short story from a young writer. Now in its 22nd year, the competition aims to launch the careers of the next generation of great Australian writers. Minister for Innovation, Science and the Digital Economy Leeanne Enoch said the Young Writers Award has become an integral part of uncovering young, creative writing talent in Queensland. State Librarian and CEO Vicki McDonald said State Library hoped the competition would continue to foster young writers and introduce them to the publishing industry. “The Young Writers Award helps writers find their voice, and gives them the confidence to work towards their literary aspirations,” Ms McDonald said. “In 2017 we are also proud to announce the inaugural Young Writers Conference held at SLQ in November, at which competition entrants and other aspiring young writers will have the opportunity to partake in a full day of skill and knowledge-building workshops, advice and support giving, and networking.” The 2017 winners of the Young Writers Award will be announced by Minister Enoch at an awards ceremony following the conference.

New Finch Road Development Proposed The property developers responsible for the Canungra Rise development, Winten Property Group, have put a development permit for a material change of use in to Scenic Rim Regional Council for further development on Finch Road, Canungra. The developers are seeking Council approval to allow a food establishment/ reception centre, market, retail shops and chapel. Plans for the development also include space for the community garden, a container style market space and animal farm. There is also car parking space, with coach parking bays included. Winten Property Group’s Andre Bondeson said the retail space would probably include a sales office for Canungra Rise. The chapel would be mainly used for weddings and functions and is non-denominational. Copies of the full application can be viewed or obtained from the assessment manger or on the Planning section of Council’s web site, using the application number MCBd16/085. Written submissions regarding the development must be lodged to Council by close of business on 13th July 2017. For enquiries regarding submission contact Council on 5540 5103.

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
COMMUNITY BUDGET 2017-18
The Community Budget was adopted last month, a progressive budget building on the continued growth and growing business confidence in our region while ensuring Council provides for the priorities of the Community Plan to make our region one of liveable communities that attract business, visitors and residents. This budget delivers the lowest rating outcome in a number of years and continues to invest in infrastructure, community programs, new playgrounds, the Vibrant and Active Towns and Villages initiatives and flood recovery. The Bridge Strategy implemented in 2011 continues with four new bridges, two of these in the Beechmont area - Back Creek Bridge and Botan Bridge - and Sharp Bridge at Witheren. Replacement of these aged timber bridges will bring the total number of remaining timber bridges to 70 - from 97 back in 2011. I understand that the new Sharp Bridge will be constructed at a higher level than the existing bridge so may be more resilient to flooding in times of high rainfall. Councils these days are legislated to provide extensive community facilities and services, and the demands of a growing region such as the Scenic Rim mean increasing pressure on the existing infrastructure, facilities and services. I urge residents to read the Community Budget Report on Council’s website or to obtain a printed copy from me. It provides a snapshot of Council’s operations, performance, policy and programs. A strong focus continues on the Long Term Financial Sustainability Strategy and this is also worth a read. I am more than happy to discuss any budget queries or concerns with residents.
OPEN STUDIOS SUCCESS
What a successful weekend the Open Studios were in Canungra! Well done to the artists involved and to the Canungra Chamber of Commerce which took on the pilot project of hosting the event in the centre of town. It takes a huge commitment from all concerned and the event certainly highlighted our beautiful town and its talents. The Design Collective Food Trucks were a new addition to town and proved to be a huge success, too. We hope to see them again later in the year.
EAT LOCAL WEEK
Once again, this event has become larger and more widely advertised by television and media outlets outside the Scenic Rim as we attract more visitors to sample the local produce and support local producers. Thank you to the local producers and businesses in the Canungra area who were involved in this Scenic Rim event.
WHAT IS HAPPENING IN DJ SMITH PARK?
The Park is getting a bit of a makeover. The hedges have been removed to make more room and Council is currently working with the Canungra RSL Sub Branch Executive to install some more pillars around the monument to commemorate the more recent wars. The monument will be more accessible and there will be new gardens and new bollards around the outside of the park. As part of the recently adopted budget, the play equipment at the back of the park will be replaced with modern, all-abilities equipment in line with the Playground Strategy. More on that in next month’s column.

WHITE LINE MARKING
Some residents, myself included, have been concerned about the new line markings on Pine St at the Finch Rd intersection and turning right into the School of Arts Hall. I have been advised by Sergeant Craig Roberts that it is legal to cross a single white line and painted island so long as you are entering a premises.
COMMUNITY SAFE PLACE DURING A DISASTER
A number of residents have asked about this, as there seems to be no designated place for residents to go if they need to leave their homes during a flood event. A group of us will discuss this matter with local disaster management personnel and determine where this might be and how it could be managed.

Hawaiian Monk Seal (Neomonachus schauinslandii) By Melissa Whitby
Rio - 60370 Champagne/White – Domestic short hair. Male – 3yrs, 2 months $99.00 Meet Rio! This happy and gentle natured guy is a curious cat that always wants to be exploring, playing, and making new friends! He’s a clever boy, with a bright mind- and he enjoys mental and physical activity to keep him happy. Rio is a loving boy who adores his humans. He doesn’t mind a cuddle but he’s just as happy following you around the house. Rio doesn’t mind other cats, either, and would make a wonderful companion for most homes. Frankie – 62079 – Aust Kelpie Male – Chocolate & Tan - 2 yrs. $300.00 Introducing Frankie a beautiful young Kelpie who came to the AWLQ as a stray and is now looking for a forever home that will embrace his every Kelpie need. As a breed that is a tireless worker, Frankie is a companion dog who will benefit from being with an active family who enjoy the great outdoors and who will meet his daily need for mental and physical exercise. Frankie will thrive on spending time playing ball games with you, a little hide and seek, BIG walks and weekend adventures, like visits to the beach. Frankie is smart, loyal and very willing to please any family who are considering offering him a new home.
Hawaii is not only home to threatened bird species. During my time on Kauai, I encountered one of the only two native endangered mammal species. My encounter with this particular mammal involved me on a kayak, accidentally getting a little too close to the Hawaiian Monk Seal. They are one of two monk seal remaining in the world, both are endangered species. A third monk seal species from the Caribbean has been classified as extinct. There are approximately just over 1000 Hawaiian Monk Seals left in the wild and all of these are found in the north-west Hawaiian Islands. This is the only species of seal to live only in US waters. Female Hawaiian Monk Seals are slightly larger than males. Usually, this seal species is solitary unless a female is with her pup or the animals are breeding. In the wild, Hawaiian Monk Seals live 25-30 years and spent most of their time at sea. The animals are predominantly bottom feeders with a particular taste for crustaceans, cephalopods and fish. Female Hawaiian Monk Seals usually give birth in March/April after a gestation period which lasts nearly a year. I was lucky enough to see three Hawaiian Monk Seals at two different locations. They are a protected species and people are not allowed to interfere with them unless authorised. Thankfully, all the people I observed were respectful of the seals and only approached at a distance. I was lucky enough to photograph the seals resting on the beach and swimming on the top of the water. For anyone visiting Kauai who wants to see the Hawaiian Monk Seal, I recommend visiting the Hanapepe Salt Ponds. It is worth keeping an eye out for areas that look like they have been cordoned off on the beach with signs. This is done to protect the seals from being disturbed. The Hawaiian Monk Seals certainly captivated me and I felt privileged to have had some amazing encounters with such an extraordinary animal.
To meet any of the animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre:

Saw Shelled Turtle, gourmet or gourmand? Myuchelys latisternum
By Susan Cully The Saw Shelled Turtle lives in our local waterways within the Coomera River Catchment. This turtle is an Australian endemic species, meaning found only in Australia. This reptile is part of the tremendous biodiversity to be found on our plateaus. This district is an overlap zone where northern and southern species of flora and fauna converge to give us more than twice the number of species found elsewhere. Male and female Saw Shelled Turtles can eat noxious, poisonous Cane Toads without distress and if the toad is too big they will simply shred it to pieces before gobbling it up. Described as ‘not aggressive’ it can, however, bite fiercely and defend itself by emitting a ghastly smell. Chiefly carnivorous, feeding on aquatic invertebrates, frogs, toads and tadpoles, it will also consume fruit and vegetation. This turtle lives in deep or shallow pools on permanently flowing waterways, particularly in the upper reaches and side channels of larger rivers. It can be found in streams from Cape York to the Richmond River, NSW. It is widespread and the population is safe and secure. Mature specimens are small to medium sized, measuring 287mm in females, 224mm in males. Females create nests in fine sand on banks close to the water, laying from 9 to 20 eggs from September to March, sometimes laying four clutches in one season. Like many other aquatic turtles, the Saw Shelled Turtle is able to obtain oxygen from water through skin, cloaca, and buccopharyngeal cavity, thus extending its ability to stay under water for prolonged periods.
Lease
Renewed
A community organisation working to improve the Beechmont environment has had its lease on Council land renewed for another five years. Corporate and Community Services Committee chair Cr Virginia West said Beechmont District Landcare Association Inc’s lease on the property on Binna Burra Road had been renewed until 30th June 2022. “In this way, Council is pleased to assist the efforts of a not-for-profit, community
Sixteen Scenic Rim residents celebrated Queensland’s birthday by becoming fair dinkum Aussies in a citizenship ceremony on 6th June. Communities in Aratula, Beaudesert, Beechmont, Boonah, Canungra, Tamborine Mountain and Tamborine are home to our newest Australians from Brazil, Canada, China, India, Italy, New Zealand, the Philippines, Romania, and the United Kingdom. Mayor Greg Christensen, who presided over the Queensland Day citizenship ceremony at The Centre Beaudesert, said becoming an Australian citizen meant something different for everyone. “It is an important day in your lives and I am glad you’ve chosen to share it with us in the Scenic Rim,” he said. “When we are finished here today, each one of you who takes the citizenship pledge will become an Australian citizen. You will have the same rights and responsibilities of those Australians who are born here.” One hundred and fifty eight years to the day after Queen Victoria declared Queensland a separate colony from New South Wales, the Scenic Rim’s newest citizens pledged loyalty to Australia and its people, to share its democratic beliefs, to respect its rights and liberties and to uphold and obey its laws. “Becoming an Australian citizen does not mean turning your back on your country of origin,” Cr Christensen said. “It does not mean you have to forget the language of the country or its customs or culture. “Instead, we ask you to share these valuable assets so that Australians can become more tolerant and understanding.

Beechmont Landcare works in partnership with Council and the local community, as well as other government agencies and private landholders, to preserve and improve the natural environment - a defining feature of the Scenic Rim region. “For a small group, Beechmont Landcare makes a big contribution to the liveability of our region,” Cr West said.

“It also works closely with other Landcare groups, including Tamborine Mountain Landcare. “The work they carry out on Council land not only helps to preserve and enhance our natural environment but also represents cost savings for ratepayers. “Through information nights, field days, information stands at local markets and various publications, the group also helps to raise community awareness of the part we can all play in caring for the environment.”

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough Have you noticed anything different about St Luke’s.? The workers are finished and St Luke’s is sparkling with a new coat of paint. Just like when we give ourselves new clothing, or a new makeover, we can feel very pleased with the results. That is exactly how we should all feel about St Luke’s. It is great to think this eighty year old building looks like new and holds a pride of place in Canungra. We have many people to thank, including you! All our street stalls, raffles, dinners, and car boot sales, have been supported by the community, providing funds towards this fresh look. Thank you for your support of our fund-raising activities. We are very grateful to the Scenic Rim Regional Council for their response to our application for a Community Grant. We were fortunate to receive a $2,200 grant which equates to 25% of the cost of the work. Thank you to Councillor Virginia West and the Council for seeing fit to help us. Next will be the replacement of the front fence. Now the painting is finished, you are welcome to come and have a closer look. Bill Gubbins has kindly offered to open St Luke’s Saturday mornings from 9am until midday, so anyone who wants to come along, just to see inside or spend a quiet moment in prayer or personal refection, is most welcome. Our sympathy to the family of Judy Morrison whose funeral was recently held at St Luke’s. Perhaps you would like to attend our Annual Fund-Raising Dinner to be held on 1st September. Our theme will be Spring and it is always a night of wonderful food and friendship. More details will be available in our next St Luke’s news. Until then enjoy our beautiful weather and safe holidays for all school children.

Moriarty Park News By Bren Dalby
Currumbin Wildlife Hospital
For a number of years Currumbin Wildlife Hospital have had a fundraising walkway in constant construction as a permanent thank you to those who make a donation to the hospital, without which the lives of many of our treasured wild species would be lost. CWH operates every day except Christmas Day from 8am - 5pm and is located on Millers Drive opposite the Sanctuary. I have been involved with Wildcare and the hospital for many years; we have our family pavers, and from funds raised at raffles on Sportsperson of the Year Awards nights we have previously acquired pavers for ‘Moriarty Park’. This year we decided it would be a lovely lasting reminder to honour the Sportsperson of the Year personally with a paver and so Murphy Baker as the 2016 winner is the first to receive this special award. We hope to continue with this tradition in years to come ... so get your Sportsperson of the Month nominations in!
Turning Canungra Pink
Moriarty Park is, in conjunction with the Turning Canungra Pink Committee, organising a spectacular launch day on 1st October at Moriarty Park, starting hopefully (weather dependant) with a hot air balloon launch and culminating in the Pink Bingo night. Keep your eyes peeled for the activities and keep the day free for a family fun day ... oh, and of course keep your change for the mega raffle that there has to be if I am involved !!!
Ants!
Moriarty Park has recently had a super ant treatment done at great expense but sensationally effective. Thanks to Scenic Rim Regional Council for $1000 grant to achieve this necessary treatment, and to Bridon Spraying for their professional and efficient service; great folk to deal with; very helpful and accommodating. They do residential pest treatments too so give them a call if you are thinking of a bug eradication !

Canungra Show
Canungra Show is coming up so lots happening at Moriarty Park on Show Day once again ... may also be a semi-final soccer game on too. Look out for any home games for our soccer players and get down for a hot chocolate and cheer them on.
Skate Park
We are in desperate search of someone who can help us with drawing some base plans for the next section of the skate park, a half pipe that Dave Staver has kindly offered his time and expertise to build, if we can get someone to do the plans ... if anybody can help or knows someone who can help please contact Bren on 0414435919.
Trivia Night
Trivia night at Moriarty Park on 22nd July at 6.30pm. Tables of 1-6 people only $10. BYO drinks and nibbles and money for the raffle! For bookings contact Bren on 0414435919 or bren.dalby@bigpond.com.
