Fundraising

Over 100 people gathered at the Canungra School of Arts Hall to see the latest in hair styles from Zanzibar Hairstyling and fashion from local boutique Holli Dolli - and to raise much needed funds for Drought Angels. Zanzibar Hairstyling owner Di Robson gave an emotional speech about the mission of Drought Angels - a charity that remains completely funded by donations. “We’ve all seen what is happening with our farmers, and Holli and I wanted to do something to help,” said Di. “Drought Angels helps those who would not normally reach out but prefer to battle it alone. One-on-one support aids in ‘breaking down the barriers’ of a proud demographic who quite often have never received a hand up,” she said.

“Life’s about a team, not about a solo person making their way on their own.” Di thanked the many small businesses in the Scenic Rim that gave prizes to raffle on the day, incuding Cafe Metz who provided morning tea for the crowd. “Holli and myself were proud of our efforts and could not have tried any harder. We gave it everything we had to achieve an amazing, successful day,” said Di. The models were all clients of Zanzibar Hairstyling who were keen to volunteer their time to raise funds for Drought Angels. “They were all nervous and excited but did such a great job for an amazing cause,” said Di. Di and Holli chose Drought Angels as the charity to support because they provide

individualised support to farming families affected by Natural Disasters Australia wide. The level of support consists of providing stock feed, financial support via prepaid visa cards and local produce vouchers from within the communities, moral support through personal face to face or phone contact and referrals to other support networks as needed. The fashion parade, raffle tickets and silent auction raised a total of $5,175 all of which was donated to Drought Angels. “Drought Angels has acknowledged our deposit to their charity account and were extremely thankful,” said Di. Celebrating 60 Years

On 23rd of May 2019, John and Audrey Morcus celebrated their 60th (diamond) wedding anniversary. They met in Australia after both migrating from the Netherlands when they were teenagers. They were married in the Uniting Church in Albert St Brisbane on the 23rd May 1959. John and Audrey were thrilled to receive congratulatory messages on their anniversary from Queen Elizabeth II, the Governor General, the Premier of Queensland and Australian Prime Minister, Scott Morrison. They celebrated with family and friends at O’Reillys Canungra Valley Vineyard and requested no presents, instead they had a donation box for Turning Canungra Pink and received $470. They said, “we don’t need any more stuff”, and believe Turning Canungra Pink is a great fundraiser that the town gets behind. John and Audrey lived in King Parrot Close, Boyland for a number of years before returning to the Gold Coast in 2010. In May 2017 they became permanent residents in Canungra at one of their Wagonwheel villas which they built in 2016, at the time John was 80 and Audrey 76. They wanted to be closer to their daughters Wendy, Monique and daughter in- law Karen and love the convenience of living in Canungra Township.

Proposed Development in the Rise An application for material change of use and reconfiguring lots in the Canungra Rise area has been submitted to Scenic Rim Regional Council. The application is for 12 blocks on the corner of Roxborough Street in the vicinity of the sewerage treatment plant. The application proposes the blocks would range in size from 293m2 to 725m2, plus over 5,000m2 of common property in the development. PlanIT Consulting states in correspondence with Council that the development is in line with Council’s medium density residential uses as the proposal seeks approval for a residential density of one dwelling per 827m2 of total site area. A previous application for shops, community garden space and a chapel and function centre was rejected by Council in 2017. Plans for the proposed residences show small lot detached house designs of four bedroom homes with double garages. A landscape plan incorporates a footpath from the development to the existing footpath onto Roxborough Street and Finch Road. It also identifies fencing treatment, landscape buffers and the intent to retain existing mature trees in the space between

The proposed development in Canungra Rise

the development and Sewerage Treatment plant. Entry to the proposed development would be via Beasley Way. A few residents on a community Facebook page were critical of the proposed development, with several stating that the previous application for shops would have been preferable; however, there is a shortage of lower cost, easy care housing in the

area, particularly for older residents wanting to downsize. Further information is available on the Scenic Rim Regional Council’s web site. The application reference is MCU19/024. Written submissions regarding the application can be made to Council by email to mail@scenicrim.qld.gov.au prior to 20th June 2019.

Bike Show Revs Up

Historical motorbike enthusiasts flocked to Canungra on 19th May for the Annual Ray Owen Classic Bike Show and Swap Meet at Canungra Showgrounds. The Ray Owen Bike Show has become one of the most popular events on the bike calendar, attracting entries from historial and vintage bikes, including a 1905 Indian Camelback, reportedly the oldest Indian in Australia. The Camelbak was almost a hybrid bicycle and motorbike, with pedals as well as a motorised engine and small fuel tank. The large crowd enjoyed stalls from the Ulysses Club, Ducati, Indian, Queensland Police, as well as organisers, Mt Tamborine Historic Motorcycle Club. Council Releases Fees

Scenic Rim Regional Council has adopted its fees and charges schedule ahead of the delivery of its 2019-20 Budget. Mayor Greg Christensen said, with the introduction of the State Government’s Waste Levy from 1st July 2019, Council wanted to ensure businesses had as much visibility as possible of charges likely to impact their operations so that they could plan ahead. “From 1st July, the State Government will be imposing a levy of $75 per tonne on commercial operators disposing of waste to landfill,” he said. “This is part of a new strategy across Queensland to increase recycling and the recovery of resources, wherever possible, to reduce the volume of waste going into landfill. “This levy will not affect residents who put out their domestic kerbside wheelie bins for collection, but it will have an impact on a range of businesses as it applies to solid waste, commercial and industrial waste and construction and demolition waste. “We appreciate the costs faced by businesses and will be communicating directly with them regarding the new waste levy being imposed by the State Government. “If anyone has any enquiries they should contact Council’s Waste Management team on 5540 5111.” Council’s own fees and charges, which apply to a range of services and facilities used by individuals and businesses, are levied to reduce the overall financial burden on ratepayers. These are outlined in Council’s 2019-20 Register of Fees and Charges which will take effect from 1st July 2019. One further major change which will be welcomed is the significant reduction in Council’s application fees for inconsistent use developments

New SRRC Deputy Mayor

Councillor Duncan McInnes has been elected Deputy Mayor of Scenic Rim Regional Council. Cr McInnes, who has represented the communities of Division 6 since 2012, has also served as Chair of Council’s Finance Committee since May 2017. At its 2016 meeting, Council resolved to review the Deputy Mayor’s position annually, . Since then, Cr Nigel Waistell and Cr Nadia O’Carroll have served as Deputy Mayor and Cr McInnes follows Cr Rick Stanfield (Division 5) who was Deputy Mayor for the past year under these arrangements. Mayor Greg Christensen moved a motion of thanks and appreciation for Cr Stanfield’s service as Deputy Mayor during a period of change for the Council organisation. Cr Stanfield thanked his fellow Councillors for the opportunity to serve as Deputy Mayor and wished Cr McInnes all the best in his new role. Cr McInnes said he was pleased to accept the nomination and thanked his colleagues for their vote of confidence. “Representing the residents of Scenic Rim is always an honour and I look forward to fulfilling the important duties of Deputy Mayor,” he said. While the annual appointment of Council’s Committee Chairs was due for review this month, it was decided to extend their term to 30 June as Council’s Standing Committees will be disbanded on July 1 when a new meeting structure takes effect. Until then Cr Michael Enright (Division 4) will continue as Corporate and Community Services Committee Chair, Cr Nigel Waistell (Division 1) will continue as Planning and Development Committee Chair and Cr Duncan McInnes will remain Finance Committee Chair.

Biggest Morning Tea

Over 100 people gathered at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard for Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea - a major fundraiser for the Cancer Council - on Thursday 23rd May. Organisers Samantha Dusting and Ali Dougherty said the support of local businesses and the community enabled them to raise over $2,300 on the day. In addition to the traditional morning tea and bake-off, duck races were held in the Canungra Creek and Mountview Alpaca Farm joined in the fun with several alpaca races held in conjunction with the Biggest Morning Tea. Cancer Council is hoping to raise over $13 million this year from Biggest Morning Tea events held across Australia during May and June. COMMUNITY COUNTS

On Wednesday 22nd May, the Canungra and District Community Bank® branch hosted an evening at The Outpost Café, to thank the wonderful volunteers who make the world we live in that much better. We invited local clubs, not for profit organisations and individuals who give up their own time and commit themselves to various establishments within our community. Our Board Chairperson, Janine Rockliff, thanked the clubs, organisations and volunteers who hold their accounts with us and encouraged those that didn’t to consider making the switch. “Banking with your local branch here in Canungra means that you are helping another small business grow. In turn this means that the branch can give more back to the community,” said Janine. Our Board members are community minded people who volunteer their time to help a variety of not for profit organisations. All of Canungra and District Community Bank® branch directors volunteer their time to ensure our business and community focus remain on track to be bigger and better – thank you! Volunteers are a vital part of many nonprofit groups. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures, if groups were to assign a dollar value to volunteer labour, volunteers are now worth $41.72 per hour. Without the help of Volunteers, many Clubs and organisations would not exist. If you’d like to know more about how you can make a difference to our community, come and say hi or give us a call, we’d love to see you! Optus

Customers

Optus mobile phone customers throughout Canungra were left without communication for days due to upgrades on the Tamborine Mountain towers. The mobile network was down from 7am on Thursday 9th May until Saturday 11 May and again from Friday 17th May until Saturday 18th May. In many cases, customers who contacted Optus about the outage were told the problem was their phone. Local resident Kelly Street said she lodged a report and was told there was no outage. “When asked to take off automatic for carrier the only carriers coming up on my phone were Telstra and Vodaphone services so she lodged a report,” said Kelly. A spokesperson for Optus stated that the telecommunications company undertook planned upgrades to its mobile sites in the Canungra region which will enable increased capacity and improve network service for customers. “Optus communicates to customers regarding planned upgrades via the Optus website, where they can view live service and network status updates,” she said. “All requests for compensation are reviewed on a case-by-case basis. Optus apologises to customers who were affected by the upgrades and thanks them for their patience.” Tracee Smith said she tried web options before calling Optus from a Telstra mobile service.

Without

Service

Optus web site on 17th May during the network outage shows planned work on the tower on Tamborine Mountain Road, but no live outage

“I spent 30 minutes searching every outage website, social media and the Optus website and zero mention of any outage in our area.” “I got a recorded message that the wait would be 30 minutes and that I should check out their website,” said Tracee. Optus customer service operators later advised the outage was due to planned maintenance. “I was told by some customer service person on their chat that we were all notified,” said Clare Flynn, “Nope ... this is the second time they’ve pulled a major outage without telling us ... I’m very annoyed.” Optus customers can apply for a credit on their account for the days the network is unavailable by phoning 133343. However, other carriers that use the Optus network

may not offer a credit and there is no compensation for economic loss for those running businesses from their Optus mobile service. Donna Tunbridge said she is with Dodo, who use the Optus network, and was advised there is no compensation for the network being unavailable. “We are running a business and communication is essential for our daily life,” said Donna, “If it is a planned outage, I don’t understand why they can’t send a blanket SMS to customers. If they had advised us we could have told our clients to contact us by email only during that time.” “Since the last outage our service has been worse - we have to go and stand in the corner of the yard to get service now,” she said.

EXPERIENCE THE FOOD & WINE OF OUR REGION

Eat Local Week Flavours are Extraordinary! Clear the diary from 29th June to 7th July, because Scenic Rim Eat Local Week has unveiled the 2019 program! Featuring more than 90 events, Scenic Rim Eat Local Week presents the opportunity to meet the people behind the produce and the flavours, in a celebration that features festivals, farm-gate events and culinary experiences for foodies of all ages. Set against the natural beauty of the Scenic Rim, a region of more than 4200 square kilometres of rich volcanic soil surrounded by ancient mountains and home to thousands of farmers and food creators, Eat Local Week is one of the most authentic food festivals in the world. Scenic Rim Mayor Greg Christensen said Scenic Rim Eat Local Week was a very real conduit between the paddock and the plate for the thousands who attend every year. “Over the past few years interest in the provenance of food has skyrocketed as people want to know the story of what is going in their mouths. We need people to value and understand the importance of our agricultural areas - so that they fight to celebrate them and to protect them.”

Sweet and sauerkraut at Canungra Hub. Photo: Susie Cunningham.

“Connecting our farmers and growers with chefs to create incredible dining experiences, and then witnessing the looks on people’s faces as they taste the produce, see the settings or meet the locals, is truly memorable. Paddock to plate is a term used

all too often in restaurants around the world, but it is practised first hand here during Eat Local Week, and indeed every week.” All Eat Local Week events are listed at www.eatlocalweek.com.au and bookings can be made via the website.

Hobbs Leads Community in Water Filtration Hobbs Building & Interiors swung open the doors to their new Canungra-based showroom to coincide with their first live education event, hosted at Platypus Valley. More than 30 community members participated in the afternoon, led by Puretec Area Sales Manager William Archer, Sean Lipke of Flux Plumbing & Gas Fitting and several Reece Plumbing Field Marketing staff. The keynote specialists discussed the importance and benefits of water filtration, including devices such as whole-of-house and backwash filters, plus maintenance tips to ensure healthy water. Director Luke Hobbs presented preventative measures including filters, gutter guard, leaf eaters, first flush diverters, water tanks and plumbing pipework, concluding simply that “filtration provides healthier and better tasting drinking water by removing chlorine, chemicals, pesticides, heavy metals and bacterial contaminants.

Handy Water Filtration Maintenance Tips from Hobbs Building & Interiors

1. Control foliage and trees surrounding the catchment area to reduce leaves and debris landing on your roof. 2. Minimise aerials or structures that may entice birds to land on the roof. 3. Inspect and clean your Leaf eaters/headers and tanks regularly, including smelling the water. 4. First flush diverters require periodical cleaning to ensure the dripper nozzle doesn’t block. (If this happens the chamber will remain full and the diverter will no longer work).

with Keer Moriarty, Editor

Development Planning...Again In the last week on social media, someone posted about a proposed new development in Canungra Rise, with a photo of the sign that had gone up, as per the regulations. There was the usual outrage that has become the mainstay of social media - because everyone wants to shut the gate and not let anyone else in, keep the small village feel to the town (which I agree with, although I wonder if it is too late for this already), not live next to medium density housing and why do things have to change anyway? In my case, I’ve seen this stuff come and go in the 20 years I’ve been in Canungra. There have been a few developments since I first came to town - Riverbend Estate for one - and the same thing happens every time. Outrage, resistance to change, acceptance. I’ve become a little detached from it. Having spoken to a few people around town, there is a need for aged care or smaller, easy care accommodation for older residents, who now have to move out of the area once they can’t keep up their own homes. I’m interested in speaking to people who are in this situation, or have family members in this situation. Also people who might have constructive, positive input to future development in the area. I believe it is possible if we work together to approach developers and maybe gain some benefit for our town from future developments. If you are interested in this please call or email the office. Let’s have a say in the future of our town.

Enjoying the Biggest Morning Tea at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard

O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard Biggest Morning Tea

Thank you to everyone who attended our Biggest Morning Tea at O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard on Thursday 23rd May. We raised $2,300 on the day for the Cancer Council which brings the total amount raised over the past eight years or so to approximately $25,000. These morning teas wouldn’t be possible, or as successful, without the incredibly generous support of the local business community who donate prizes for our raffles. We would like to thank everyone who has supported our Biggest Morning Teas by donating prizes, entering the bake-offs, buying raffle tickets, rubber ducks for the duck races on the creek, alpacas for the alpaca races and selfies and everyone who has come along each year. This year was our last Biggest Morning Tea and we sure went out with a bang! Sam and Ali O’Reilly’s Canungra Valley Vineyard

Rodeo Transport and Discount

Canungra Hotel Rodeo organisers are offering discounted tickets for locals as well as bus pickup within the Canungra area. Canungra AH&I Society Secretary, Sharon Rafferty said the bus is available from 10am until midnight on Saturday 13th July, with pickup and dropoff points located around Canungra. “We recognise that people want to be able to get to and from this popular event safely - without worrying about drinking and driving - so we have organised a courtesy bus for the day,” said Sharon. “We are hoping this will also alleviate some of the traffic congestion that occurred last year due to the large number of people attending the rodeo.” “Last year we turned away an estimated 2,000 patrons when the Rodeo reached capacity,” said Sharon, “So this year we will be limiting the numbers and selling tickets online only - tickets will not be available at the gate.” “For locals, we have a limited number of discounted tickets available online to keep the Canungra Rodeo affordable for local people,” she said, “To access this offer, go to canrodeo.org and enter the code ‘locals’ when asked for a coupon code.” For details about the Canungra Rodeo bus service, check the Canungra Rodeo Facebook page and the Canungra Rodeo web site canrodeo.org. Groups can contact Beaman’s Buses on 0405 139 049 to organise transport, subject to availability. EXPOSURE UNLIMITED Beaudesert Camera Club Celebrates 25 Years

The Beaudesert Camera Club is a small friendly group of like minded people who enjoy taking photographs and want to improve their photography. Last month members celebrated the Club’s 25th Anniversary with an annual mystery tour car rally which culminated in a BBQ at Moogerah Dam near Boonah. The Club meet each month with either a guest speaker or photo critique where club members have the chance to enter their photos for judging by accredited judges. The main critique is based on digital images, and the Club also has an enlargement category where prints are judged at Club meetings at least four times a year. There are different categories for judging of images so as not to favour one particular subject. This also encourages members to venture outside their comfort zone and try new topics! The Club regularly organises photographic outings and workshops that allow members to learn and improve their photographic skills. The Club is suitable for all levels of photographers from beginners to advanced ability, and all types of cameras. There are always Club members on hand to answer questions and assist people wishing to learn more about their cameras. The next Club meeting will be held on Tuesday 25th June at 7pm at the Beaudesert Community Arts and Information Centre, 2-14 Enterprise Drive, Beaudesert. To find out more about dates of meetings, workshops and outings, or just the club in general, please go to secretary@beaudesertcamera.org.au or for media enquires call Sue Rodwell on 0410 688 012.

The Canungra Times - June 2019

Sarabah Estate Vineyard has recently reopened after a short hiatus and is a great destination for those who want a quiet lunch or brunch within an easy drive of Canungra. An invitation to visit the Vineyard led to a quick succession of text messages to the Blonde Bombshell to make sure I had a lunch companion, other than the Large Labrador. Arriving at the Chalet, we quickly decided the Chef’s suggestion - Moroccan Chicken salad and a cheese platter - was the way to go. The next decision was where to eat. We decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and enjoy the ambience of the water fountain and a visit by the Vineyard’s pony, Harriet, in the Secret Garden. The food was fresh and plentiful! The Moroccan Chicken salad is one of the best things I have ever eaten - chicken, eggplant, tomato and feta, accompanied by fresh rocket; and the cheese platter was equally delicious. The service was friendly and welcoming, with meals brought out in good time. I decided to throw caution to the wind and have a glass of Sarabah Estate’s Brut Reserve Sparkling, which then led to two glasses, necessitating the Blonde driving back to town. Sarabah’s wines are now made by Witches Chase winemaker, Jon Heslop and, although we decided not to taste other wines, I can highly recommend the bubbles. Sarabah Estate Vineyard is located at 46 Rymera Road, Sarabah - a short 10 minute drive from Canungra via Lamington National Park Road. The Vineyard is open from 10am - 5pm Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for brunch, lunch and wine tastings. Bookings for meals are not essential but are recommended. For more information visit sarabahestate.com.au or email wine@sarabahestate.com.au.

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS)

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is an annual campaign that aims to encourage more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country. This year’s book is Alpacas with Maracas written and illustrated by Matt Cosgrove.

Broadwater District Cross Country Trials

Several students participated in the Broadwater District Cross Country Trials in May. Participating students had trained hard and ran their best race on the day. The behaviour of the 27 students was exceptional and their enthusiasm before and after their races was great to see. They can feel proud of their achievements.

CANUNGRA

Principal, Kylie Todhunter was pleased to announce that Asiya (6th) and Amy (12th) have been selected to represent the district at the regional trials on 4th June (top 14 go to regionals). A special mention to Courtney (17th), Lauren (18th), Leila (18th), Lochie (18th) and Will (18th) who earned points for the school as well (top 20 competitors earn points for their school). Luke, Harvey, Lily and James placed in the 20’s and Cooper and Cooper C in the 30’s. There are up to 100 competitors in each 10 and 11 year old race and up to 130 in a 12 year old race. “Well done to all of our competitors,” said Mrs Todhunter, “It is a hard, long run. You should all be very proud of yourselves for doing your best. Good luck to those two students going on to the Regionals.”

Welcome to the Orchestra! This is what members of the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra (TMO) have been saying frequently recently as they welcome new players to the orchestra. One newcomer to the Orchestra is Canungra local Lou MacLachlan, who is now the Orchestra’s lead flautist. Lou is a quiet, unassuming person; however, on reading her biography, she needn’t be. Lou began her musical career, on the recorder and in the school marching band, followed by the organ in primary school. A youth orchestra visited her small country town primary school, which was Lou’s first glimpse and listen to a live flute. It was then that she decided that was the instrument she wanted to learn. Lou says she was fortunate to have a very encouraging and inspiring flute teacher throughout high school, and she got involved in choir, chamber music, concert bands and a youth orchestra during those years. “I wasn’t sure whether to go on to study nursing or music, but chose my love of music, going on to complete a Bachelor of Music at University of New England, Armidale,” she said.

Flautist Lou MacLachlan

“During these studies I heard about Music Therapy, which seemed like the ideal career for me, combining music and being able to help people with it. So, I quickly learned the guitar, needing an instrument I could sing with, and completed a Graduate Diploma in Music Therapy at Melbourne University.”

Lou has since worked in the fields of Aged and Palliative Care, as well as with children in Special Education and Early Intervention, using music to help people in various ways. She says she feels incredibly privileged to have found this career and work in an area she loves. One of the potential downsides of being a Music Therapist, is that Lou no longer plays music for herself, as she spends so much time playing for other people in her work. “I was thrilled to discover the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra, when I moved to Canungra last year,” said Lou. “I’m thoroughly enjoying being a part of this very friendly and welcoming orchestra, with some wonderful musicians and to be part of a community group and making my own music again,” she said. Tamborine Mountain Orchestra’s next concert is “Music from Stage & Screen” which will be held at St George’s Anglican Church on Sunday 23rd June 2019, at 2.30pm. Admission is $10 for adults, with children free. Afternoon tea will be available for a gold coin donation. For more information about TMO, visit their Facebook page and website.

MOTORING -

Seven Years on and Still Fun - 86GT

Review by Lee McKenzie-McKinnon, Editor, carandbikenews.com.au

A decade ago the motoring world was a buzz with the talk of a new rear wheel drive sports car from Toyota. It was displayed at motor shows and drip fed to the media and public with photos of what was coming. In 2012, Toyota released the 86GT and 86GTS which was designed in partnership with Japanese company Fuji Heavy Industries (who supplied the engine and driveline) and also sold as a Subaru BRZ. The Toyota 86 was designed as a modernday version of the classic AE86 from the 1980s and seven years later it is still selling to a range of customers with focus still being the motoring enthusiast. The most recent upgrade for the 86 came in December 2016, which brought a mid-life restyle, retuned suspension, a minor powerboost and a shorter shift manual gearbox. Getting behind the wheel of the 2019 86GTS automatic, equipped with Dynamic Performance Pack consisting of Brembo Brakes, SACHS Suspension and unique black 17 inch alloy wheels, it was clear this is still a relevant car. The 86 comes standard with a 2.0L boxer engine with a 6-speed automatic

transmission (manual available) and produces 152kW. One thing we couldn’t fault is the handling and stopping. Toyota have done an amazing job on the handling and this meant the 86GTS could not put a foot wrong. Sitting really low in the 86 gives a wellbalanced car and good centre of gravity. The steering is very direct, and tight chassis and suspension with anti-roll bars combine superbly. The interior feels like you have stepped into a race car with air-conditioning. The dashboard design is elegant but simple with a clear gauge display and switches intuitively placed for easy reach.

The Canungra Times - June 2019

The steering wheel is nice and the paddle shifters on the auto are an easy reach and work when wanted. Overall the interior is nice and suits the style Toyota are going for. The fuel consumption rating from Toyota is mid 8s per 100kms, and this is achievable however driving it in a spirited fashion will see this increase. The Toyota 86GTS looks good from the outside and in and will do what you want on a daily basis and allow you to have a little fun when you feel sporty. Cost: $45,075 drive away (check local dealers for current pricing).

ANZAC Day 2019

By Sarah Moloney, Aussie Lifestyle Properties

Canungra Suburb Profile

Forming part of the Scenic Rim Region Local Government region, Canungra is attracting a greater population to its footprint with its current population of 1146 residents. House prices in Canungra have grown by 3.18% in the past three years and 4.10% last year. We have been experiencing a slight price adjustment in the Canungra and surrounds market. This is mainly due to restrictions on current borrowing making demand less, more so on the higher priced properties and in return houses are listed for sale for longer – as per the listing duration stats below. Canungra has a resilient local economy and is experiencing some major infrastructure developments, giving the town some favourable key indicators for growth. The table below gives statistics from Corelogic on the market for Canungra from 2013 - 2018 with its average rental yield being around 5.04%. Measurement...............................Houses......... Units Median Value................................$484,280..... $333,988 Median Weekly Rent (Gross).......... $435.............$393 Suburb Rental Returns................... 4.79%..........4.73% Annual Number of Sales.................... 16..................1 Average Vendor Discounting......... 15.57%.........6.07% Average Listing duration................ 88 days.......116 days Overall, with interest rates on hold and the election now out of our way, Canungra is looking positive.

By Col Lee, President, Canungra RSL Sub Branch The Canungra RSL Sub-Branch appreciated the support of the businesses of Canungra leading up to ANZAC Day, and the way they worked around the Dawn and Mid-Morning Services. Special thank you to the Canungra Branch of the Bendigo Bank, for the involvement of Candice Wright and her reading of “A Country Dawn Service”. Many thanks to the Commandant Kokoda Barracks and the Commanding Officer, Staff and Trainees, Defence Force School of Intelligence for their support during the Dawn and Mid-Morning Services. Army Chaplains Major Michael Poklington and Major James Pearce added the religious touch to both services and are to be congratulated for their participation. Bren Dalby was on hand at the Dawn Service and right on cue. Bren commenced piping as the wreath laying ceremony began. The sounds of her pipes filtered through the air and added a very sacred feeling for all those in attendance. Bugler, Mr Tim Hunt - thank you for your attendance and your delivery of the ‘Last Post’, ‘Reveille’ and ‘Rouse’. This is the most important part of any remembrance service and your bugle calls made all in attendance feel quite humble. The School Captains and students who assisted in the wreath laying ceremony are congratulated for their attendance and support to the Mid-Morning Service. The ANZAC Day reading went well and having the honour of leading the wreath laying ceremony, placed a special touch to the day. Excellent support leading up to and on the day from council, with the preparation of the park and their support in diverting the traffic whilst the march took place. Canungra Police and Ambulance members were on hand should they be required; their involvement is a critical part of the event and they do it in a very professional manner. Thank you. Chris Duncan’s version of ‘The Band Played Waltzing Matilda’ was excellent. The song tells us all about the horrors of war both at the front and at home. Rebecca Lloyd may sing the New Zealand and Australian National Anthems at next years ANZAC Day, although there are some rumours that the Australian Army Band Corps is trying to enlist her. Rebecca set the scene at both the Dawn and Mid-Morning Services with her rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’, beautiful. Finally, to all who attended in record numbers, thank you for supporting your ANZAC Day, the Canungra RSL Sub-Branch looks forward to seeing you once again on the 11th November, for a very special Remembrance/Armistice Day.

AWL Pet of the Month

Nature’s Gems

Buff-Banded Rail (Gallirallus philippensis) By Melissa Whitby

DEMI - ID 78923

Black - Domestic Medium Hair Cat

Female – 9 Years 4 Months. Cost: $50.00 Demi is a resilient companion cat. Her youth was spent living rough with a human companion who she was bonded to. She was then cared for by an elderly lady for a few years. Now at nine years old, Demi has found herself at AWLQ Gold Coast looking for a forever home and a life that will have her living safely indoors. A little shy when first meeting people, Demi is truly deserving of a loving home, one that will offer her a really healthy diet (to deter her old foraging habits). Sweet, poised and ready for some unconditional love, DEMI is vet checked and desexed.

I often have people contact me about bird species they have seen and are not sure exactly what species that they are looking at. Often, it is a common bird species that has become accustomed to living in manmade environments but is not obvious such as Magpies, Butcherbirds, fairy-wrens and honeyeaters. One such bird is the Buff-banded Rail. This bird species is strikingly marked with a striped black and white breast, white eyebrow and rufous stripe from the bill through the eye down to the back of the head. Male and female birds have similar plumage. Very young birds are black and fluffy. Juvenile birds have plumage that is similar to adults but duller in colour. A similar species that may be mistaken for the Buff-banded Rail is known as the Lewin’s Rail. The Lewin’s Rail differs from Buff-banded Rail by having a longer pink bill and no white eyebrow. Buff-banded Rail are usually seen singly. They will utilise a variety of habitats including road verges, edges of dense vegetation along watercourses, gardens, islands and marshes. When I observe the birds they are usually walking along the ground and I have rarely ever seen them fly unless alarmed. Buff-banded Rail not familiar with humans tend to have a very ‘skulking’ behaviour and will flick their tail if they become nervous. In areas where Buff-banded Rail encounter people, they can become very tame and will allow close-up views even with young chicks. These birds have an extensive range throughout Australia and beyond to places such as New Zealand and islands in the Pacific. When I visited Lord Howe Island in 2016, I saw Buff-banded Rails nearly every day I was on the island. The breeding season of Buff-banded Rail is from August to March, however, these birds will nest anytime after good rain. I have observed Buff-banded Rails with fluffy black chicks in November and April in South-east Queensland. Each time the adult birds had five chicks with them. Buff-banded Rail is a common bird species in South-east Queensland and from my observations continue to thrive. Their ability to adapt to man-made environments and tenacious nature has certainly added to their ability to survive. I certainly never tire at looking at this beautiful bird and I hope that by writing this article I have helped some identify that elusive bird that they have only been seeing glimpses of in their suburban garden!

A Weed With Native Cousins By Susan Cully

Corky Passion Vine Passiflora suberosa

This smothering, invasive weed will be familiar to most gardeners. It is native to south-east USA, Central America, the Caribbean and tropical South America. Like all of us it loves South East Queensland. Like so many weeds this species was cultivated as a garden ornamental in the past. If only those early gardeners had looked for the beautiful native passion vine species: bright red, strong orange, beautiful! This creeping vine will dominate and overwhelm the ferns and ground covers in closed forests, open woodlands, urban bushland, riparian vegetation, and disturbed, waste areas. And ... it comes with two other nuisance vines in its family, the Stinking Passion vine (Passiflora foetida) and the White Passion Flower (Passiflora subpeltata). There are distinguishing features: White Passion Flower has hairless leaves with three rounded lobes and Stinking Passion Vine has hairy leaves with three pointed lobes, while

Passiflora suberosa form. Photo: P Donatiu

Passiflora suberosa. Photo: P Donatiu

Corky Passion Vine (Passiflora suberosa) has hairless leaves with three pointed lobes. The flowers and fruit of Corky Passion Vine are also much smaller than those of the other species. True to its name the corky member of the family has distinctive corky stems as it matures. This species reproduces by seed, which are mainly spread by birds and other animals that eat its fruit. For management

information please visit Biosecurity Queensland for a fact sheet - dpi.qld.gov.au. The native species are host plants for the larvae of the beautiful, transparent Glasswing butterfly (Acraea andromacha). For information on the spectacular native species please visit the Land for Wildlife site: lfwseq.org.au/passion-vines-seq/ ... and become a passionate passion vine enthusiast.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)

The Sun’s passage through Gemini is an invitation to think things through. It’s all very well to imagine that you can live instinctively from moment to moment, but really instinct is reactive. It’s not responsive. Life is offering you the opportunity to respond. Shift your perception a little.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21)

Jupiter is retrograde in Sagittarius. It’s time to re-think, to reconsider. The subject at hand is relationship. Are you living your relationships in ways that are conscious and creative? Or are you caught in loops of habit? Give your curiosity full permission to run away with itself.

This month’s passage of the Sun through Gemini gives you the intellectual power to see where creativity lies and where it is lost. This capacity for discernment that is shifting into overdrive, will allow you to see what’s what and make appropriate decisions to get yourself back on track.

News from St Luke’s By Di Ayscough St Luke’s diary for the year is filling fast. Firstly, as mentioned in last month’s article, the period from 30th May until 9th June will be a dedicated time for personal prayer at St Luke’s. This is a time to pray for our world. Thy Kingdom Come, is seen by many Christians as a chance to pray, and to have our prayers answered. How often do we think we know what is best and God needs to listen to our input? To pray is to talk to God and trust him. His terms not ours! Rev Valerie recently quoted in a sermon (John 13.34-35) about loving one another. “We are not told to read the Bible, memorise texts, post messages on Instagram calling people to repent, or pray this prayer or say these words,” she said. Valerie pointed out there is no set of rules to follow, except to love one another. What a peaceful, loving world we would have if we just simply loved one another. Feel free to call at St Luke’s and pray, or simply spend some quiet moments surrounded by love at St Luke’s. I would love to see you come and enjoy our annual dinner on Friday 12th July. This is a great chance to enjoy the hospitality and entertainment of St Luke’s congregation. You will not be disappointed. Contact David on 5533 7070 to book your seat. Do you have a favourite hymn.? On Sunday afternoon, 21st July commencing at 3pm there will be an hour of requested music played by Anne King as a dedication to our new organ (kindly donated by our local branch of the Bendigo Bank). The music will be followed by a cuppa and a bite to eat. The afternoon is free and this will be a good opportunity to hear our music. You will be made to feel most welcome.

QCWA Wonglepong Branch

Turning Canungra Pink was started by a local resident in 2011, herself a Breast Cancer Survivor. Since then it has become a month long event, decorating the town in pink for awareness and raising money throughout businesses and community events all run by volunteers. Its a great effort for a small town!

QCWA Wonglepong Hall. Painting by Ralph Muller

By Joyce Libke Founded in 1925, the QCWA Wonglepong Branch has been a part of Canungra District for 94 years. For the first ten years the members met in their homes. In 1935 the hall was built on an area of land leased for 99 years from the Tamborine Shire Chairman, Edwin Franklin on the roadside of his property, ‘Sarah Vale’ in Wonglepong. His wife, Ann Franklin was the founding President and Emily Campbell, who lived across the Canungra Creek, was the founding Secretary. The Franklin Family was very involved in building the hall - raising most of the money, felling trees for posts and timber - one son milling timber while another built the hall with the assistance of members’ husbands. He also made the pews. From the minutes of the early years we know they assisted mothers and children in need in the area, gave a Lister cot to the hospital, supplied lunch for returned soldiers [WW1] and their wives on Anzac Day. During WW2 they were active in making articles for the soldiers via the Comforts Fund knitted balaclavas, gloves, vests while also sewing handkerchiefs[133 dozen] and hussifs [62]. Over the years catering for weddings, sales, ANZAC lunch, school sports was their main source of income. During the 1950-60s craft afternoons followed meetings. In 1935, when the hall was built, QCWA Tamborine Mountain Branch built a cottage that was let to far distance members for holidays, then as accommodation for QATB staff. Sadly the Branch closed in 1992 (and has reopened in 2019) and the Cottage became Wonglepong’s responsibility. Let to mothers with children over the past 20 years, it has recently been renovated. At the hall in the paddock, located at 2779 Beaudesert Nerang Road, Wonglepong, the Branch has for years struggled with the 1935 “out house” - or lack of. The Branch has recently installed a toilet system which means members can arrange visits from other QCWA Branches and the locals, many of whom have been intrigued with the “little hall on the hill”. The Hall was heritage listed in 1995 and almost everything in the hall has a history. The QCWA Wonglepong Branch is holding a free Showcase Event on Sunday 9th June from 11am to show what the Queensland Country Women’s Association does now, what it intends to do in the future and share some of the history of the QCWA Wonglepong Branch. For enquiries about the Showcase event or QCWA, contact the QCWA Wonglepong Branch by email wonglepongqcwa@gmail.com.

Funds raised are then donated both to Cancer Council Queensland and to “PINK ASSIST” which is a fund created by The Canungra Chamber of Commerce and used to provide support directly to our local families dealing with ongoing Cancer treatment (chemotherapy or radiation). PINK ASSIST offers vouchers to assist local patients with purchases such as pharmaceuticals, fuel, house cleaning, lawn mowing, basic mechanical expenses plus some other individual needs that may arise whilst undergoing treatment including hospital parking fees. Contact one of your local committee members to see if you or someone you know might be eligible for this assistance.

Moriarty Park News with Bren Dalby

Social

tennis

Social tennis coming along nicely but we would love to have a few more players at any level come along! Still playing from 6pm - 8pm on Wednesday nights but as the nights are a wee bit cooler now, we are happy to add some other times during the day if anyone would like to make a suggestion?

Trivia

Trivia with Stu and the crew is on 7th June at 6pm for a 6.30pm kick off at Moriarty Park; BYO drinks and nibblies; $5 per person, maximum 6 at a table. HAWAIIAN theme this month so get lei’d! Lei’s available on night for purchase for those who ’forgot’! Raffle of course so bring lots of shrapnel please. Announcing in advance that our following trivia will be on 12th July (please note this is the night before Canungra Rodeo so may be subject to change - check next month’s Canungra Times for confirmation) – same time, same place etc, but this special event will be a fundraiser for Fragile X, a genetic disorder affecting intellectual ability. The month of awareness for this condition is July and the colour utilised is ORANGE therefore please get out all your orange gear and get it on at trivia! Prizes will be themed also, so a very colourful and successful fundraising night is hoped for!! There will for both events be a prize for best dressed participant so don’t hold back!!

Meetings

Meetings are at this stage every third Monday of the month at 7pm. All very welcome to come along. Bookings are building up at Moriarty Park which is fantastic; have a squizz at our website and think about your next birthday party or family occasion being held there to save the aggravation at home!!!! Very very reasonable rates!!

Sportsperson Nominations

Please also we would like nominations for Sportspersons of the Month. Each monthly winner receives, on presentation night, a $50 Foodworks voucher and a $50 Sportys voucher as well as the chance to become the very prestigious SPORTSPERSON OF THE YEAR. As with all our events, this is sponsored by our unbelievably generous Foodworks; thanks to Tony and Anne and the crew at the shop for all they do for our special wee community.
