Years of Service to the Community
After 35 years as Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Captain for Canungra, Peter Geiger has retired. Peter spent many years doing community service in a myriad of groups, including Moriarty Park, the Lions Club and Canungra RSL. In 2009 he was awarded Citizen of the Year at the Scenic Rim Australia Day awards for his service to the community. Peter said he intended to retire from the QFES five years ago, but with only half of the allotted crew at the Canungra Station, he stayed. Peter was there when the Canungra Auxiallary Fire Brigade started in the early 1970’s. They met in Herb Flesser’s backyard, without a fire truck and only the most basic of fire fighting equipment. Training started once a week at Beaudesert Fire Station until they were competent in basic
fire fighting, then on 12th December 1979 the Canungra Auxillary Fire Brigade was officially commissioned, with a station built in Pine Street, across from the Canungra School of Arts Hall. Peter was appointed as Captain, Murray Cecil as Lieutenant and eight other firefighters worked from the station. At first the men were all volunteers, later they were employed on an on-call basis, including training. In the early years the firefighters’ main turnouts were for structual fires - haysheds and houses, later they attended more traffic accidents. Peter attributes this change to the increase in traffic travelling through town. “One year we had nearly 100 turnouts and over 90 of those were car crashes and over 10 of those were fatalities,” said Peter.
“Auxillary firefighters see things other people never see - things people should never see,” said Peter, “We do vertical rescues, swift water rescues, fires, car accidents. It can be a lot to handle.” On 14th November 2003, the existing station was officially opened, giving the firefighters access to better equipment and services, as well as increased opportinities for training close to home. “I would like to thank all the blokes who worked under my Captaincy,” said Peter, “For their companionship, service and their dedication to fire and rescue support in the community.” “I would also like to congratulate Cameron Spalding who is taking over as Captain and wish him all the best. I hope he will find it as pleasurable and fulfilling as it has been for me,” he said.

Logan Community Bank has thrown its weight behind the Canungra & District Communty Bank Campaign®, contributing $7,000 to the cost of the Community survey. The Chairman of Logan Community Bank, Jason Luckhardt, said it is good that Logan is able to help adjoining Community Banks become established. “Logan Community Bank® was opened almost 11 years ago, starting with one branch and has grown to five branches, returning over $200,000 back into the Logan Community, each year,” said Jason. “When considering the great outcomes we have achieved through the Bendigo Bank model it simply made sense to support Canungra’s campaign,” he said. “Community isn’t just about your backyard, but also what is happening just over the fence. We look forward to seeing, and sharing, in the success of the nearby Canungra and district community as they support the bank,” said Jason.

Students Enjoy Military Museum Visit Mothers Day Raffle Winner A recent visit to Kokoda Barracks provided a brief opportunity for Charlotte Stubbs (left) and her sister Alexandra to walk in the footsteps of their Great Grandfather, Thomas Mills. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 12th Light Horse Regiment (reserve) in 1935, Mills enlisted in the Army at the outbreak of World War II and, serving with the 6th Division Cavalry Commandos in the Middle East, was the first Australian of the war to be awarded the Military Cross and Bar. On returning from the Middle East, Mills (soon to be promoted to Lieutenant Colonel) was among the many Australian soldiers Charlotte and Alexandra Stubbs to pass through Canungra, where the hard learnt lessons of jungle warfare from the Kokoda campaign were being imparted to troops headed to New Guinea to fight the Japanese. Photographed with the plaque listing the battle honours of their Great Grandfather’s regiment, Charlotte and Alexandra were among Tamborine Mountain College’s Leo Club members to visit the Kokoda Barracks and tour its fascinating Museum of Australian Military Intelligence.

Nepal Receives a Boost from Canungra By Ricky Smith
I’m writing to you from Pokhara, Nepal where I’ve been since the Earthquake hit. I’m a young traveler from Canungra and earlier this year I began a three month trip with friends, starting in Sri Lanka, through India and to Nepal where I completed Everest Base Camp - one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The last destination of my journey was Pokhara. I was travelling solo as my companions had returned to Australia. When the earthquake struck, I was planning what part of Nepal I would travel to next. I had about a week left of my journey and wanted to make the most of it.
My Earthquake Experience
I was lying in bed reading, when my bed started to vibrate like an out of control massage chair. A growing roar filled my ears as the whole room began to shake. I ran for the door toward the sound of screams and shouts. My guest house was a hundred metres off the main street, a little way up a mountain side with views of Pokhara lake and the surrounding peaks. As I scrambled out of my room my initial thought was “avalanche”, having seen and heard a few on my trek the week before. The low rumble emitted by the tectonic plates shifting beneath the ground grew louder and the shaking became more violent. I huddled amongst a group of fellow backpackers on a grassy area away from any structures. As I looked around the group for reassurance, all I saw was fear. Then, as quickly as it started, the earthquake stopped. I was trembling from head to toe.
Ricky at a Red Cross Camp in Nepal
The Aftermath
I slowly learnt of the seriousness of the quake through online media. Aftershocks were felt for the next two days, some stronger than others. I was sent running from my room several times that night, making sleep near impossible. The biggest of the aftershocks came while I was searching for news in an internet café. More screams echoed out as everyone hurried to the streets, including myself. This time there was no running for safety. Three story concrete buildings surrounded the crowded street and the mess of power lines on each side of the road looked as though they would fall right on top of us. This tremor caused further landslides and reduced more houses to rubble, bringing more death and injury.
Out of Harm’s Way
I’m all too aware of how lucky I am to have been out of harm’s way during the earthquake. Pokhara itself has suffered minimal damage but surrounding villages have fared much worse. I’ve been
touched by the people of Nepal who have shared their culture with me and I’m doing what I can to help the situation. Since the earthquake I have been spreading awareness and visiting some of the affected villages. A few days after the quake I hired a motorbike and rode out to the epicenter in Gurkha. The scenes were devastating. What I saw were wonderful people in dire need of help. A storm set in while I was in the mountains and I was forced to leave my bike and shelter under a tarp with twenty Nepalese people who had lost their homes. Despite their circumstances they welcomed me as one of their own. I was offered food and shelter despite their lack of both. The selflessness of these beautiful people left me baffled and amazed. I was extremely moved and knew I had to reach out and help.

The sixth Beechmont Zest Fest will be enticing visitors with new ideas on Sunday 28th June. The festival celebrates the value of Scenic Rim fresh produce, arts and crafts and musical talent. Festival goers can also explore green alternatives and ideas for sustainable living, such as growing and creating their own food. Demonstrations on subjects like aquaponics, community gardening and cheese making will be running throughout the day to show how easy it can be to begin to create self-sustainability. Organiser Wendi Trulson said the day was a chance for people to see what was happening in their community and to become inspired. “I’d like people to try something for themselves at home, whether it be tasting something new or taking a step towards more sustainable living,” she said.
There’s something for all the family, with free children’s activities including music making, mask making and mandala painting. Beechmont Zest Fest is part of the Scenic Rim Council’s Eat Local Week, which promotes the Scenic Rim’s fresh food and its makers. This year it will be held at the Beechmont Community Hall, starting at 9am and ending at approximately 3.30pm. Entry is $5 for adults, with children free. We supported some great causes in the last year, not only locally but in Queensland and overseas. We have given two donations locally, one to the Canungra Owls Soccer Club for $1,800 worth of new balls and the second to the local swim club for $700 in equipment. There was also a donation of a roll of wadding ($500) for the local quilting ladies to help with a project they were doing for a good cause. The Op Shop has donated $1,000 to Drought Angels on behalf of the Canungra community to help our farmers who are doing it tough. We have invested funds to improve the shop with a container for storage and a new sorting room. This has improved the appearance and operation of the shop.

Overseas, toward the end of 2014 the Op shop purchased a $4,500 motor bike for Dr Silent Tovosia in Honiara, Solomon Islands to help with his work treating bukua. It is not easy getting around Honiara so this has enabled Dr Silent to work more efficiently, for which he is very grateful. Bukua is a fungal skin disease, basically turning sufferers into social outcasts. Frontier Outreach supply all the medications and Dr Silent educates and treats sufferers without charge. Our latest donation will be $3,000 to Nepal, via Asian Aid, without administration costs, direct to an agent on the front line of Nepal. The Op Shop still has funds ear marked for the local community and we would love some feed back about what is needed. We really want to thank our fabulous volunteers, without whom we wouldn’t be able to operate. There is always room for more if you have a little spare time (see Op Shop Manager, Caroline!).

Council Comment By Cr Virginia West Scenic Rim Regional Council
Eat Local Week
This celebration of local farmers, food and fare is now in its fifth year. Running from 27 June to 5 July with an action packed week of events, Eat Local Week culminates with its signature event the Winter Harvest Festival, in Aratula, on 4 July from 10am till 4pm. This year Council has partnered with Queensland Art Gallery/ Gallery of Modern Art (QAGOMA) to showcase our food and produce to our city neighbours at their world class venue in the heart of Brisbane. Josh Lopez, Executive Chef at QAGOMA and chef for the G20, is the 2015 Event Ambassador. He has a great passion for cooking world class produce from Queensland and in particular the Scenic Rim. Look out for him at the Winter Harvest Festival. The program of events for both ELW and WHF are available at the Information Centre or Canungra Library. Congratulations to our own Kate Raymont from Hinterland Harvest who is one of three local ambassadors chosen to work with Josh during this week.
Council Sustainability
Scenic Rim Regional Council has again been ranked among the most financially sustainable local government areas in Queensland for the third consecutive year. In it’s report to State Parliament on the results of council audits for 2013/14, the Queensland Audit Office (QAO) rated Scenic Rim as having a lower risk of sustainability concerns. Council has become a lean organisation and one which is continually reviewing it’s resourcing and considering the most efficient ways to deliver services to ensure the most cost-effective outcomes for ratepayers.
Arts Trail
Congratulations to local artists for their spectacular working exhibitions as part of the Arts and Studios Trail. The Canungra/ Beechmont weekend was extremely busy and all the studios hosted more visitors than in previous years. We have such talent in our local area.

Green Army Arrival
Green Army recruits have started work along the Canungra Creek with a weed clearing program followed by tree planting as part Council’s Million Trees initiative. Council has successfully partnered with the Federal Government to sponsor eight teams over a two year period who will work in a number of areas to improve environmental outcomes while simultaneously building on the skills and confidence of the young recruits. They have already made a huge difference to the area below Moriarty Park and down on Riverbend along the creek bank.
New Section Of Footpath
The Canungra Works crew have done a great job in constructing the new footpath outside the C & K kindergarten and repairing the section under the large fig tree. This was an extra project they fitted in with their normal road maintainance duties. It’s worth a look! You will also notice the new Disabled Parking bays and ramp on Christie St outside the school.
Biddaddaba Action Group Workshop
The group recently hosted a very successful Saturday workshop with a focus on weed and pest management,an increasing issue in our south east area. Over 30 residents attended and their feedback about the day was very positive. The group are more than happy to assist new residents to the Biddaddaba valley with any pest and weed issues. They have a very successful baiting program in association with Council.

Gallipoli - A Personal Experience By Jan Sanchez
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Contribution and Achievement Occasionally we come across people we look up to and admire - often this will be a high profile actor, sportperson or model put forward by the media, but this month I discovered an ex-local who has really made a difference. Ricky Smith emailed me after the Nepal earthquake. He was backpacking there when the quake hit, and rather than packing up and leaving, he was so touched by the plight of the people of Nepal, he stayed on as long as funds would allow, helping the local Red Cross and raising money for the people of Nepal. In his own words, he doesn’t ‘pretend to be a budding journalist or a fearless do-gooder out to save the world but I truly believe we have the power to help, if only a little’. Ricky and his friends have raised over $17,000 US dollars so far, but they have also spent their own time visiting and helping people in the villages where they are staying. Unfortunately I didn’t have the space to run all of his amazing story, but he is certainly a young man who set out on an adventure and got a lot more than he bargained for. It should be noted that Ricky chose to stay in Nepal when the Australian Air Force was evacuating Australians to Bangkok. His humility and willingness to help in the face of personal danger is an inspiration.
April 25th, 2015. We waited throughout the night. It was approaching 4.30am. I looked out to sea. The sky was a deep shade of blue and the sea was black. Gradually a strip of golden light appeared on the horizon. The only noise came from the gentle lapping of tiny waves on the shore. It was exactly 100 years since our soldiers jumped into that black, icy water and waded ashore. Some never made it. They were shot dead even before they had time to leave the boats. That was the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli. I’ll always remember the colour of the sky, and the silence, apart from the gentle lapping of the waves. The silence was profound, a time for deep contemplation. That is the impression that it left on me. My father was an ANZAC. He was on the second wave of boats on Gallipoli and jumped off with Ned Hanlon, who later became a Premier of Queensland. I visited the battlefields, walked through the trenches, walked on the beach at Anzac Cove and in Shrapnel Gully. I walked around Lone Pine, especially all the places I knew my father had been. At Lone Pine I stopped to remember 23 year old Lieutenant Joseph William Costin, a neighbour’s relation, who was manning a machine gun trying to protect his men as they scrambled for cover. A shell landed in his dugout and he was killed in
action on 25th April 1915 by that shell on the ‘400’ (Lone Pine) Plateau. He was a Brisbane boy who belonged to the 9th Battalion, AIF. There is no known grave. As we walked around the battlefields we were told we could be walking on body Jan’s father, parts. That was a James Millar, horrible realisation. in 1916 In 1915 the wind each day was freezing cold. The ships found their way to Anzac Cove in inky darkness. Steamers took the boats near the shore and the soldiers rowed in from there. They jumped into black, icy cold, chest deep water and waded ashore. They suffered dreadfully from the cold, rain, mud, lice, rats, snow, and lack of shelter. My father was shot in the eye. I wish he had never had to go. I wish that none of “our boys” had to go. My father lived. Although badly injured, he came home. I help people do their family history, but nothing could prepare me for what I saw at Gallipoli. There were not a few crosses or tombstones, there were thousands of them. I took photos as a reminder of a sad event in our history. The youngest Australian soldier killed was 14 years old. The carnage on all sides was enormous. The ANZACS sacrificed everything and their sacrifice must never be forgotten.

Soldiers’ Families to be Recruited for ANZAC Centenary Project By Lisa Stubbs
Some 100 years after the men of the then Tamborine Shire answered the call to fight for king and country, their relatives and descendents are being recruited for a Centenary of ANZAC project to mark their place in history. With a Federal Government ANZAC Centenary grant, the Canungra RSL Sub-branch is establishing a website to tell the stories of the 135 men and

a nurse honoured on the township’s memorial for having “Enlisted in the Great War 1914-1918”. The memorial recognises not only the contribution of those from the Canungra community but also the surrounding areas of Tamborine Mountain, Tamborine and Beechmont. Eighteen of those who enlisted paid the supreme sacrifice, being killed in action or dying of their wounds.
While the 18 fallen will be the focus of the When Canungra Answered The Call project, the website aims to profile each of the 136 who served. Photographs and information will be compiled on each, putting faces to the names on the roll of honour, so that those who served will be remembered as individuals with their own stories. To contribute to the project, email canungrarslsubbranch@outlook.com or phone Keith Cogzell on 0418 887 762.

Well Being With Clancy Beck
Technology Overload Have you tried unplugging lately? You have all heard it before, I’m sure, but our attachment and dependency on electronic devices creeps up on us time and again. Our fascination with social media means that some are rarely ever without some sort of device in their hand. But everyone needs a break from TV, iPads, mobile phones, video games and computers now and then. Research suggests that constant use of our favourite gadgets contributes to fatigue, mineral and vitamin deficiencies, memory loss and sleep problems to name a few. You may notice the kids cranky after too much exposure? Time out from technology could improve your health and give you a much needed energy boost. I recently finished writing and publishing my first ever Ebook - an exciting endeavour that required intense focus, and many hours of staring at words and photos on a screen. A labour of love. But I can tell you first hand, a little time away from the screen is well and truly overdue. The horses and dogs agree with me - they’ve been quite put out by my reclusive behaviour! Our bodies need a balance that includes a good dose of fresh air and sunshine as well as high quality nutrition, sleep and exercise. It is vital to maintaining good health, that we stay connected to nature and our surroundings. This can be as easy and local as you like...a good walk with the dog, taking off your shoes rolling up your jeans and wading through the creek. Or perhaps you’re more of a Weekend Health Retreat type. Even taking your lunch break outside, tech free, is a perfect mini recharge. Why not take a look at your google calendar and find a gap?! Schedule yourself and your family a screen-free 24hrs when you can take full advantage of the beautiful weather that constitutes a typical Queensland winter. Recharge your spirit and enthusiasm, detox from devices, bump up your vitamin D levels while reconnecting with your family and friends. Honestly, the hardest part might turn out to be NOT TAKING A SELFIE while you’re doing it.
Tracey Davis with Chris Hartley, the songwriter and producer of her number one song Lover Come Back to Me
Tracey is Living in the NOW
The Time is NOW for Canungra’s local singer, songwriter bass player and recording artist Tracey Davis who is still pinching herself after receiving her first number one for her song Lover Come Back To Me written by Chris Hartley, on VRadio Nashville Top 40 Chart in April 2015 in Nashville. It’s been a wild ride for Tracey since releasing her album NOW on New Years Day 2014. The album has achieved five charting singles in Australia and overseas. Tracey is also excited to have filmed another music video in Canungra in May for her song I Let Myself Down, also from her album NOW which will be on CMC and YouTube soon. Tracey is looking forward to sharing her New Country Meets Bluegrass Show at the Canungra Hotel on 14th November 2015 with the Tracey Davis Band featuring Chris Hartley and Dale Robbins and the amazing Owl Valley Bluegrass Band as well as many other surprises on the night. For more information about Tracey’s music, follow her on Facebook or visit her web site www.traceydavis.com.au or keep an eye on the Canungra Times for updates.

Brrrr, the weather is getting colder and the air dryer. I love the winter in Queensland, however, all of this dry air does make my hands rough, scaly, and itchy at times. So, I decided I was going to make my own hand cream and cuticle cream, and here are the recipes. Nourishing Hand & Body Cream • ¼ cup Coconut Oil • 1/8 cup Shea Butter • 1/8 cup Cocoa Butter • 1 tablespoon Aloe Vera Juice • 1 tablespoon Liquid Oil of your choice (ie. Sweet Almond, Jojoba, etc) • 5-10 drops of Essential Oil of your choice (lavender, orange, or jasmine smell nice!) 1. Heat the Shea Butter, Coconut oil, and Cocoa Butter over low heat until melted. 2. Remove from heat. 3. Add the Aloe Vera Juice, liquid oil, and essential oils, and stir to combine well. 4. Store in a container of your choice. If the cream is a little bit runny, then you can store it in a pump bottle. Cuticle Cream • 2 tablespoons Shea Butter • 1 teaspoon Beeswax • 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil • 7 drops of Lavender or Myrrh Essential Oil 1. In a small glass container, combine Shea Butter, Beeswax, and Coconut Oil. 2. Place the glass container in saucepan with 1-1.5 inches of boiling water. 3. Stir ingredients until combined (around 5-10 minutes), use an iceblock stick for easy cleanup. 4. Once melted, remove from heat and let rest for 3 minutes. 5. Add essential oils and stir. 6. Pour into a container. Let harden for 2-3 hours and you’re done!

Did someone say GORGEOUS?! Meet Bella! This sweet 9 year old was surrendered to the Animal Welfare League as her previous owner could no longer look after her. Bella LOVES head scratches, she pushes her head into your hands for more pats. Her previous owner told us that she likes to be the one and only cat of the house. She came from a home with older children and doesn’t seem to mind them if they take their time in slowly getting to know her. Bella is fully house trained and would love a new home soon. Bella is $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Please note that adoption fees are subject to change. Check the web site or phone for updates. Nature’s Gems
Travel Diary 2015 - Tasmania By Melissa Whitby
Carpet Python. Photo: Ron Bloxham
Uninvited Guests
By Michelle Plant
When bird feeding goes horribly wrong, no longer are birds being fed, they have become the main course! Attracting rodents and predators such as snakes and carnivorous birds are unexpected complications for well-intentioned bird feed providers. Few would be comfortable dealing with a gate crashing python, nor the long term distress of witnessing the snake’s successful dining experience. Several actions could help discourage the uninvited guests: moving the feeder around the yard, stop providing feed for a while, staying to monitor the feeder whilst the feed is out, removing the feed after a period of time, and ensuring left-over feed is removed to a secure, vermin proof rubbish bin. Let’s think about this, the bird feeding station is only a hop, skip or a slither to the front door. Where’s the uninvited guest going to rest after its meal?
After my travels overseas last year, I thought I would stay closer to home in 2015. After much agonising about where to go, I decided to go to Tasmania, bird watching with a work colleague, on the hunt for the 12 Tassie endemic bird species. We decided to go straight to the areas in Tasmania known to have all these 12 species. Our first stop was Bruny Island. Over the next couple of days exploring the island, we were able to see 11 of the 12 Tasmanian endemic birds: Yellow Wattlebird, Scrub-tit, Tasmanian Scrub-wren, Strong-billed Honeyeater, Forty-spotted Pardalote, Yellow-throated honeyeater, Green Rosella, Dusky Robin, Tasmanian Thornbill, Black-headed Honeyeater and Tasmanian Native Hen. Other wildlife highlights on Bruny Island included views of the rare white Bruny Island wallaby and visiting the local Blue Penguin and short-tailed Shearwater breeding colony. Overall, Bruny Island is a birdwatcher’s paradise, but if your taste is more gourmet, I would recommend it is worth a visit to sample the food and wine that the island has to offer. From Bruny Island, we headed north (passing through Hobart) towards the town of Triabunna. Our next destination was Maria Island. This particular island can only be reached by boat or plane. Accommodation is available on Maria Island but it requires being completely self-sufficient. We stayed in Triabunna and travelled to Maria Island via ferry. Maria Island is the site of a 19th century convict settlement and is rich in history. It is also a haven for wildlife. It was here that we saw the Black Currawong (our last endemic bird) and other birds such as the Hooded Plover and Pink Robin, which completely fulfilled our bird-watching ambitions! Maria Island is also home to Cape Barren Geese, Common wombats and a population of re-introduced Tasmanian Devils. The landscape of Maria Island is beautiful and the cliffs around the island are stunning on a fine, clear day. After visiting Bruny and Maria Island, our plan was to continue north towards Launceston. This part of the journey I Green Rosella will have to write about for next month!

DESIGN BRIEF & RESPONSE Derived from the formal Brief contained in the Service Agreement 1. bring a sense of Structure, Order and Organisation over the whole site through an imaginative layout 2. allow for all the different recreational, productive and functional activities in a unified way 3. to express the site as a unified whole, with sub-zones fitting the overall theme 4. to explore ‘Productive’ practicalities within an imaginative configuration i) extensive perennial and annual beds including herbs, medicinal and cosmetic in raised beds and on ground, and to propose both an easier method and functional configuration ii) augment existing fruit trees in a cordinated way iii) expand the chicken / egg production iv) integrated compost processing location 5. Entries to be strengthened 6. Passive recreation areas to be formalised 7.more shade and coordinated mass planting 8. create a diverse range of nooks for a diverity of ways to use use and enjoy the site 9. propose a configuration for both pedestrian and vehicular access, including on-site garage and workshop. 10. explore the potential for income producing accomodation options with private courtyards
CONCEPT SKETCH
SITE FUNCTION
Radial zoning derived from the site analysis centred on the core of the site, the mid point betwen the house and the upper terrace area. From this point both functional and aesthetic
Activity zones that harmonised both the appearence and functionality of the whole site., as well providing a basis for Staged works depending on priorities
ZONES LIVING: Primary living area outside with Pavilion, higher viewing area and access to all areas further out into the yard OPEN SPACE: Central ordering and Recreational space from which all main aspects of the yard are accessible SERVICE: Carparking or garage space with frequently used elements from which the yard is accessible by vehicle. PRIVATE: Adjacent to the two main bedrooms looking east with potential access to individual private spaces. RAINFOREST: Existing vegetated space as Entry Feature and possible internal spaces. PRODUCTIVE: Planted Beds rfor annuals and perrenials with full exposure to sun PRODUCTIVE: Tree and Orchard crops grouped. Fenced with chook access all round. WORKSHOP: and storage area with access through to the Open Space area. Alternate hangout. VERGE AREA: Maintenance and Visitor Parking

ii) Option 2 a more formal geomentric definition to all the main spatial zones imparts a more visually structured order and flow through the whole site with a crisper delineation between the different areas. A greater sense of unity of the whole site , this option would also experineced as far more informal on te ground iii) Option 3 pure rectilinear formality provides the most obvious and striking sense of visual structure and order. The scale of the site and the configuration of the sub--spaces still allows extended views ‘through spaces maintaning a ’big site feel’ within a more manageable layout. Each Option allows for maximised opportunities to include all the desired elements in a unified manner over the whole site The difference zones are structurally acheived by a broadly precise setout, attention to level ground planes, and the degree of edge definition. (eg: aim for pads with gradients of max1:50 falls. The configurations shown will require max 400cut and a similar fill in some locations only)

News from St Luke’s Anglican Church By Di Ayscough
We are thankful to have the new extension to our pavilion finished. John King and Bill Gubbins worked tirelessly to double the size of the existing pavilion and we now have the much needed extra space to store our wares. Thank you John and Bill for all your magnificent work. I recently attended a discussion where the theme was “are you prepared to get out of your boat”. This discussion was led by teenagers and they really were asking those present to think about getting out of their comfort zone to help others. It led me to think how much do I do to help others? Whether it be neighbours, my friends or someone I may not even know, everyone is in need from time to time. Even if we do something small for someone else it may mean a great deal to the recipient and while it may have cost us nothing more than a little time, it could make a huge difference to someone’s life. Such a small act of kindness could be like tossing a pebble in a pond, where ripples spread to the outside edges. Acts of kindness or helping someone in need not only makes you feel good but it is good. We are grateful to the Scenic Rim Council for upgrading the footpath and trimming the tree outside St Luke’s. A valued act of kindness. Our deepest sympathy go out to the family of June Randall whose funeral service took place at St Luke’s. You are in our thoughts and prayers. Wishing you all enjoy many blessings and a peaceful and healthy month ahead.

Anzac Centenary Community Grants
Member for Beaudesert Jon Krause has encouraged local organisations to apply for third round funding through the Queensland Anzac Centenary grants program. Mr Krause said the program provided funding for communities to commemorate the sacrifices made by community members to assist Australia’s involvement in the First World War. “Australia’s national story for the First World War is made up of many local stories, and these are the stories we want to recognise and commemorate through the community grants program,” Mr Krause said. “The breadth of those stories spans the efforts of individuals who signed up to fight on far shores and the contribution of people working on the home front to support that overseas effort. “In this funding round, priority will be given to projects that focus on community research and have the potential to expand our knowledge of activities on the home front. “I look forward to working with local organisations to create an important legacy for generations to come in honour of those who sacrificed so much in the past.” Mr Krause said applications for round three will close at 4pm, on Tuesday 9 June 2015. For more information on the Anzac Centenary grant program visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100.

Green Team News
We had a very exciting visit from the team at The Great South East a couple of weeks ago. They came out to follow up on our Healthy Waterways award last year. Laurel Edwards and her crew came out to chat with myself and the Green Team leaders. Julie McLellan, CEO of Healthy Waterways was also there on the day to talk about the upcoming Healthy Waterways Awards and how important they are in recognising the work that community groups put into our waterways. If you would like to check out this year’s finalists go to their website,
you can even go in the draw for prizes if you place a People’s Choice vote. The website is www. healthywaterways.org/Awards. The Great South East segment was scheduled to air on Sunday 31st May. The school will receive a copy and we will show this on parade at some stage soon. It was a very proud moment to see our kids being acknowledged for all their hard work. The Green Team would like to thank Mick and Jenny Corcoran for their kind donation of the fence in the Prep Playground. We will be having a working bee on Saturday 13th June to do a planting in this area. Again watch the newsletter for details.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20) With the Sun and Mars in Gemini, most of this month is for fooling around. Strangely, the more you fool around, the more you learn – and unlearn. Play is the perfect path to a true experiential education. There’s no need to play hard. It’s not a macho education you are after, after all. TAURUS (Apr 21 – May 20) Though Venus begins the month in Cancer, lulling you into a state of nurturance and security, it’s not long before she moves into Leo, which is a whole different ball game. Within a week or so, the game will change, to you being coerced to stand your ground and express yourself. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) For most of the month ahead, the Sun, Mercury and Mars, are all in Gemini. This should give you self-assurance, vitality, willpower and intellectual dexterity. This is all dependent on you keeping your sense of possibility wide open, and your ego well out of the way. Be lively and humble. CANCER (June 22 – July 22) From the journey through emotional intensity you have been on, the outcome should be that you now have a greater handle on truth, and a slightly altered philosophy of life. There is no point in compromising one’s receptivity to all the great adventures that come from being fully alive. LEO (July 23 – Aug 22) The presence of Jupiter in Leo, is offering you the chance to grow your passion for being who you are, as you are, right out there in the world at large. Add to this the fanning winds blowing in from the three planets now in Gemini and there will be no stopping you. Grab it by the horns. VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sept 22) The universe is pointing you in the direction of home and family. With Mercury going backwards and forwards in Gemini, this should lead you on a wandering path of reflection, with alternating periods of insight and befuddlement. Find the thread that helps you figure out what you need. LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23) Venus has been dragging you through a deep emotional undertow, as she traverses the sign of Cancer. She will continue to do so for another week or so. Then she will blast off into Leo. As she turns into a growling lioness, so your scales will become delightfully dynamic and alive. SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21) Saturn returns to you this month. He has been in Sagittarius, preparing the ground for Centaur persons to get wise. He is back to make sure you are still on the straight and narrow. If you are up for deepening the discipline of mindfulness, then this, his latest visit, will be a real treat. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Saturn reverses out of Sagittarius and leaves you alone for a couple of weeks. He has given you a taste of what is required on the next step of your journey of trance-endence - increased awareness! This short time without his company, is a good time to have a holiday, relax and get ready. CAPRICORN (Dec 22 – Jan 19) Pluto continues to go backwards. His transformative force is pointed at you, not at the world at large. It is you and all your blind spots that are up for his treatment. The world is not going to change, without you confronting what you see in it, identified in the mirror of your own soul. AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18) The presence of three planets in fellow air sign, Gemini, will give you a boost. You are host to both fire and air. Ideas that you have been carrying around in germinal form, are suddenly given all the energy required to make them manifest. Put what means most to you, into practise. PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20) Chiron is in reverse in Pisces. He is leaning on you to attend to your own health and healing. Neptune is in reverse in Pisces. He is pulling you like a big oceanic magnet, towards all that lights a fire in your heart and soul. Go with the passion you are feeling inside. Desist from resisting it.

This is a ‘classical’ sudoku puzzle - a grid 9 squares wide and 9 squares deep. The lines of squares running horizontally are called rows, and the lines running vertically are called columns. The grid is further divided by the darker lines into nine 3 X 3 square ‘boxes’. Some of the squares already have numbers in them. Your task is to fill in the blank squares. There’s only one rule: Each row, column and box must end up containing all of the numbers from 1 to 9. This rule has an important side-effect, which is the basis of all solving techniques: Each number can only appear once in a row, column or box.

By Bren Dalby A successful AGM was held last month and whilst no new faces, the old ones are a pretty dedicated lot and we are happy to have ‘em! An even more successful disco was held and we thank all involved in helping with proceedings, and all who attended the pyjama theme was terrific and a lot of fun. Huge thanks must go to Jason (from Canungra Hardware) of Oz Worx Entertainment who has taken over as the disco DJ from the wonderful Mr Murphy who has retired. Jason has filled those shoes magnificently and the disco went brilliantly. Jason can be contacted on 0447 410 029 for your entertainment needs. Over the last month Moriarty Park has hosted a course in Mental Health First Aid, a government funded opportunity organised by Partners in Recovery, for locals to equip themselves with the knowledge to be able to assist anyone they think may be having some problems in that area. It was very well attended (not least because Kate and Leigh from Hinterland Harvest Catering were cooking the meal and this, of course, was superb!). Having spoken with several attendees, this course was very informative, enjoyable and has given all the confidence to be able to take some initial steps to help someone in need. There may be another course run in July so keep an eye on the Canungra Times date claimer and Facebook page for details. Moriarty Park will be holding a Trivia night sponsored by FoodWorks in the coming months. Flyers announcing the date will be outside FoodWorks soon. Still lacking in Sportspeople nominations but I know this is generally a quieter time and soon we will be inundated !! The Green Army have been working on the creek bank; they are a group of young people who, with co-ordination from council are cleaning up our overgrown creek bank and planting native flora. It’s going to look great and will create an even more family friendly facility. Council having kindly organised the exterior of the building to be painted which has made the inside look a bit ordinary, so a working bee will be held shortly where any help would be greatly appreciated, to ‘ schmicko’ the place up - and hopefully have more functions booked.

Canungra Owls Soccer News
By Bren Dalby
Well, our goals are painted and ready to put into action! Some interest has been expressed in purchasing the old goals and if you are interested please let me know. Canteen helpers have been wonderful and I look forward to seeing more new faces offering their services on game days and nights and training days. We have several new referees starting out and I commend them on their enthusiasm and great work. Any others considering a referee
course should contact me ASAP please. We will be holding a Bingo night in a few weeks so look out for that date on advertising at Foodworks and the Newsagents and have a fun, prize packed night out! This is the easiest part of the season when everything is basically organised and we can all enjoy the playing and the spectating. Don’t forget curry nights on Wednesday nights when the men’s team are playing at home! Go the Owls!!
Sunday 17th May saw the first of a mini Test Match at the CCG (Canungra Cricket Ground). Team Ash scored 0/171 off their first ten overs. Andrew “PeeWee” Mahony smashed his way to an unbeaten 103, solidly supported by Tommy of the Mahony Clan who scored 65 not out. PeeWee’s ton included eleven sixes and seven fours. Tommy thumped seven sixes and four fours. Mick Mahony’s bowling was punished with 58 runs scored off his two overs! Team Kieran racked up 1/182 with Mick “Cracker” Mahony scoring 128 not out and Matt Boland 36 not out. In their second ten over innings, Team Ash scored 4/110, notable batting scores were Glenn McLeod 22 (2 sixes + 1 four) and Tommy Mahony 42 not out. Jake Knight was rewarded with 2/22 for his precision bowling. This set up a target of 281 for Team Kieran which was surpassed with two overs to spare. Notable batting performances were Jake Knight 37, Rod Thoroughgood 49, and of course, we had to mention a brave 20 not out by Dave Staver. Player of the Match was Andrew “PeeWee” Mahony for the first ton of 2015. Canungra T20 Cricket Day is held on the third Sunday of each month at Moriarty Park. New players and spectators are very welcome. The day out is a lot of fun and is entertaining for families. The cost to play is only $5 per person. Next game is Sunday 21st June. Feel free to visit the Facebook page: T20 Cricket Canungra. All enquiries can be directed to myself, Stu, on 0422 986 208 or email stumagoo65@gmail.com.
