Somewhere for the Blokes to Go! Canungra’s blokes finally have somewhere to go to connect with each other.

The Canungra Men’s Shed Inc was recently formed by a small group dedicated to the well being of the community, especially the men.

President Norm Graham said they were pleased to have 23 financial members on their books to start the organisation.

“It has taken a bit of work to get the paperwork done but we are now incorporated and insured and we have a home!” he said.

“We have secured a premise, via the Canungra Sports and Recreation Grounds Committee, a huge hurdle, made a lot easier by Wayne Reiser and the whole committee.”

“There have been many offers of donatable goods and items, to assist in the future viability and direction of our shed.”

Rachel McGlashan is well known as the face behind Canungra Takeaway, but in her earlier years she pursued a singing career in country music. She has sung in country music festivals across Australia and studied music at college in Texas! If you’re lucky, you might hear her singing at work...

You’ve had Canungra Takeaway for two years but what I wanted to ask you about was ... what are you laughing about?

Have you been talking to Terry?

Yes, Terry dobbed you in! He told me you’re a country music whiz.

Mostly a singer. I play guitar, not really good at it - well enough to back myself up at a gig...

Better than me in that case! But tell me everything about singing, when did you start singing?

I was about 12. We moved from a farm in Mildura, next door to the President of the Country Music Club. My Dad always loved country music - at the time it was Lee Kernaghan and Gina Jeffries, and Olivia Newton-John’s ‘Let Me Be There - that was one of the first songs I learned to sing.

Did you have lessons?

No, the next door neighbour was testing out his PA system one day and we asked what

he was doing. He invited us over for a sing. So I grabbed my Spice Girls CD and we jumped over the fence, my brother and I. He said to my mum and dad, you should bring them to the country music club.

So you weren’t into country music then?

No as much as my dad or my brother, I’d heard a lot of it.

Which Spice Girl did you like best?

I think Baby Spice because she had the cute little dresses. I’ve always been into cute little dresses. When I was little I called them ‘Ta-Das’, because I’d put a dress on and come out going ‘ta-da’!

You’ve always been a performer!

I went along to the local Country Music Club and learned ‘Girl’s Night Out’ by Gina Jeffries (sings a few bars of the song - she actually can really sing!). I was very nervous and forgot my words but after that we met the other kids that

were doing it and kept going from there.

We met the other kids who were doing it and just took it on from there. Ended up going to lots of different country music festivals and it was a whole new world.

I think Terry also said you went to the US? I went over there to go to College in Texas in a country town called Levelland. They had a highly renowned Commercial Music degree. A few people I knew had been there so I decided to go after I finished Year 12.

I only did one semester. I did subjects like songwriting, performance. I was in an audition only band and we did live recorded music shows. This is all back in the day before Australian Idol and those music shows.

Was that what you wanted to do at the time for a career?

Definitely. I wanted to be a singer and becoming a chef was my back up career to pay the bills in between. I thought

Did you get any ideas about food from your time in Texas?

There were some different things there. Like Chicken Fried Steak...

We did a skit about that on stage once.

So that’s chicken?

No, it’s a beef schnitzel.

But you said chicken...

You know my Crunchy Fried Chicken? It’s a piece of steak and its fried the way you do chicken, so its called Chicken Fried Steak.

That makes my brain hurt - that is so confusing - why wouldn’t you

call it what it is?

I know (laughs).

Do you still sing?

I haven’t for a long time, but I really want to get back into it because I do miss it. I do sing a bit at home.

I guess it is hard with the business (she has owned Canungra Takeaway for two years)?

I am starting getting a bit more time now so hopefully ...

Maybe we can get you up at Canungra Rodeo. I know the band...

At the Rodeo! I didn’t think of that! That would be great!

A good friend of mine is in Darwin gigging up there so maybe when he’s back in town we can do something.

Bank Backs Community Projects

A bank that returns profits to the community is a foreign concept, but that is exactly what Canungra has in the Bendigo Bank.

Bendigo’s Community Bank model has been successful around Australia, especially in towns that lost banking services due to the closures of the ‘Big Four’. The Community Banks, including Canungra, are owned by local shareholders and run by a Board, in conjunction with Bendigo Bank - currently Australia’s fifth largest retail bank.

Chairperson of the Canungra & District Community Bank, Janine Rockliff said the Bank was an initiative of the Canungra Chamber of Commerce and opened after a huge push from the local community.

“It took a couple of years for people to understand the concept of the

“We had to raise the capital through shares which took about two years. We are now committed to providing banking services in Canungra and also to returning the bank profits to the community through grants and sponsorships - community partnerships.”

Canungra farmers gained insights and inspiration about the future of farming and agritourism when they attended the recent Farm2Plate Exchange in Beaudesert.

It was a coup to be able to attend the highly anticipated annual event, which was launched in NSW in 2019, so close to home.

Simone Jelley from Pretty Produce and Robyn Lee from Greenlee Farm and Cottages attended from Canungra and surrounds.

They were among farmers from across the Scenic Rim and beyond in attendance at the conference, which extended from 17 to 20 May, including workshops.

Much of the conference was hosted at The Centre in Beaudesert and Towri

Sheep Cheeses at Gleneagle, Tommerup’s Dairy Farm at Kerry and Kooroomba Vineyard and Lavender Farm at Mt Alford, also hosted events.

Farm2Plate Exchange was produced and facilitated by food innovation and regional development agency Regionality, with support from Scenic Rim Regional Council and the Commonwealth Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangement.

Key topics of conversation, under the theme of ‘Renewal’, included the impact of climate change on farming, intergenerational equity, connecting with the conscious consumer and making food provenance a way of life for Australians post-pandemic.

Share Your Story of Resilience

A project by Griffith University aims to gain a deeper understanding of how communities can prepare for, respond to and recover from natural disasters with a focus on enhancing resilience.

The interdisciplinary project (including tourism, architecture and environment), led by Associate Professor Karine Dupré and Dr Margarida Abreu Novais is run in partnership with Binna Burra Lodge, Mount Barney Lodge and Scenic Rim Regional Council.

The project was jointly funded under the Commonwealth/State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements 2020.

The project started in August 2020 and the first stage involved the collection of memories and stories of those who were impacted by the

2019 bushfires through interviews.

A moving exhibition was created to showcase key findings of the research, to share and collect memories, to increase awareness and foster discussion about post-disaster recovery. It was on display at Binna Burra and has now moved to Mount Barney Lodge. It will then continue to other locations within the Scenic Rim. Stories gathered emphasised the power of the community in dealing with crises.

The bushfires ignited a stronger sense of community. People made a more concerted effort to know each other in their neighbourhood, listen to everyone’s experience to build a deeper sense of belonging in the community.

Turning Canungra Pink to Return

Canungra is set to turn pink again this October after a scaled down COVID event in 2020.

Joanne Kennedy has volunteered to take on the role of Coordinator this year and said she is looking forward to connecting with the community and helping people promote their events.

“We have several events in the pipeline at the moment - from dinners to trivia and bingo,” said Joanne.

“Turning Canungra Pink raises funds for all types of cancer with fifty per cent of money raised donated to Cancer Council Queensland and the other half goes to help people in the community who are having treatment for cancer.”

Turning Canungra Pink began in 2011 when a local cafe owner,

Di Crooks began running fundraising events for Cancer Council Queensland.

The Canungra Chamber of Commerce became involved and many businesses and residents run events which are promoted under the Turning Canungra Pink banner.

Canungra Chamber of Commerce President, Monique Morcus said the Chamber and Turning Canungra Pink Sub Committee are busy preparing for this year’s events.

“After a year off due to COVID, everyone is excited,” she said, “We have some new faces and people putting their hands up to volunteer and make this year’s fundraising another success.”

The success of the

month of fundraising, which has previously raised over $40,000 in a year, depends on the support of volunteers and local residents.

“We need the support from the community, not only to support and attend the events to make them successful, but we could really do with some help throughout the month and before,” said Monique.

“If anyone has a few hours here and there to help out, it would be appreciated.”

Joanne said she is happy to discuss fundraising ideas with members of the community and is looking forward to a huge month in October.

Could You Be the 2021 Beaudesert Showgirl?

The Beaudesert Show Society Showgirl committee are on the lookout for Beaudesert Show Society’s ambassadors for the 125th Beaudesert Show.

Showgirl committee member Rhiannon Taylor said the Society are looking for Beaudesert Showgirl, Beaudesert Junior Show Person and a Beaudesert Rural Ambassador.

Entrants are welcome from Beaudesert and surrounding areas. Canungra residents are invited to enter as Canungra Show Society does not currently run this competition.

The categories are: Beaudesert Showgirl - female aged from 18 to 28 years (can be married or have children).

Beaudesert Junior Show Person - 12–17 years – male or female.

Beaudesert Rural Ambassador – 20 – 30 years – Male or female.

Ms Taylor said these contests aim to recognise and promote the role the next generation will play in sustaining rural and regional communities.

“The Showgirl competition is certainly not a beauty pageant, the women are judged on personality, confidence, ambition and life goals, general knowledge, show knowledge, rural knowledge, presentation and speech,” she said.

“Finalists are also asked to demonstrate knowledge of their local community and current affairs.

“It is exciting that married women, as well as women with children, can now enter the Showgirl Competition after a rule change was accepted by the board of Queensland Ag Shows.”

The winners of these competitions will be the faces of the 125th Beaudesert Show, on 3 and 4 September.

The 2019 Beaudesert Showgirl, Caitlyn Hester said the Showgirl experience was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“There was never a dull moment walking around with the Rural Ambassador, Junior Show Person and the Miss Showgirl Runner Up,” she said.

Countdown to Scenic Rim Eat Local Week has begun Beechmont’s Rosewood Estate is set to host one of the dining events of the year that will see Scenic Rim’s Regional Food Ambassador Chefs pooling their creative talents to create a delicious menu celebrating 10 years of Scenic Rim Eat Local Week.

Mrs Thomson took 24 students to the Broadwater District Cross Country Championships.

It was a bright sunny day but the track was very muddy and wet (which I’m sure some of the students loved!). All students ran their best and should be very proud of their efforts. We compete against 35 other schools.

The top 20 get points for our school and the top 14 go on to compete at the South Coast Regional Championships in June.

We didn’t place in the top 14 this year but both Brooklyn and James placed 19th and got points for our team. Congratulations boys that’s a great effort. A special mention to Cooper Mac who placed 28th. There are well over 100 participants in each race.

Readers Cup

By Camryn Simpson On Tuesday night the Readers Cup team, Camryn Simpson, Minnie Tapia and Reagan and Piper fletcher travelled to Hillcrest Christian College along with Mrs Morgan and Mrs Foster. The night involved our team answering 30 comprehension questions over six rounds based on five novels which we read leading up to this event.

Although we didn’t come away with a win we all had a great time and got to read some wonderful books and be a part of such an amazing experience. A massive thank you to the teachers that came along and gave up their time to come and support us. Also a thank you to all the siblings and parent that came along.

Saying Good-Bye! Canungra Pharmacy’s Vicki Finch said goodbye to customers and co-workers after 31 years working at the Pharmacy.

Vicki’s last day was Monday 31 May 2021.

She said she will continue to be involved in more community events and organisations - she is currently involved with the Canungra School of Arts Hall - and is looking forward to spending more time with her husband Derek and her family.

TULLAMORE FARM If you would like to be more sustainable then one of the most valuable things you can do is to add at least two or three laying chickens to your backyard or property.

High quality chickens should provide six eggs a week. Check with the Council to see how many for your area and consider your egg requirements.

You don’t need a rooster to get eggs and the neighbours may not be very appreciate being woken in the morning.

We purchased our girls locally and I checked recently and point of lay fowls were around $25 each.

Invest in quality hens because the feed and housing costs will be similar regardless of the

type of purchase.

You can minimise your feed costs and reduce your household waste by feeding them a lot of your fruit and vegetable scraps plus give them some of the plants you have growing around the yard.

Our birds love Arrowroot, Thistle, Comfrey, Warrigal greens, Sweet Potato leaves and any type of legume. They are free range and enjoy the grubs and bugs that are available to them.

Chicken manure is one of our most prized inputs for our significant compost production.

All the kids who visit here love collecting the eggs and we know we eat healthier with our own chickens.

Two or three laying chickens can be great if you want to be more sustainable.

Some people build or purchase mobile chook pens which can be used to help keep the grass down and reduce costs plu.

Others consider a permanent cage and the number of chickens you have will have a bearing on the size of cage need-

ed. You can purchase ready built or have one made.

We have a pet Cockatiel named Shylah who has just turned 24.

We love her (even with her bad attitude) but she supplies no fresh eggs and 100% of her diet

comes from the aisles of Woolworths.

It still comes as a little bit of a surprise to see how many people comment to us here at Tullamore Farm that their chickens have become great pets.

Governor-General Returns to the Scenic Rim

Beechmont residents and Councillors appreciated the return visit from the Governor-General of Australia and his wife.

The Governor-General, David Hurley and his wife, Mrs Linda Hurley, visited Beechmont on Tuesday 25 May to reconnect with the community impacted by the 2019 September bushfires.

Canungra’s History A pupil at Witheren School, Jasper Jerome, at 14 years of age, drove his own bullock wagon – carting logs for Lahey’s Sawmill at Canungra. He parked his team outside the school on Friday afternoons so that his name was on the pupil roll to keep the necessary number of pupils required to have a teacher appointed.

In the afternoon, if they heard the locomotive coming, the school was quickly closed so Miss McConnel and the children who walked with her in the morning, would get a ride home.

One day, a log jammed and Miss McConnel fainted before they got out. The tunnel was hand hewn through sandstone just wide enough to allow the loco engines to move through - no space

even for a child.

Sophie (pupil 19201930) told of the morning she was walking with Miss McConnel across a tramway bridge over a gully, when Miss McConnel slipped and was saved from falling through by her umbrella.

Sophie then got into trouble for screaming as her teacher was disappearing!

In the 1930s and 1940s, children who lived miles away from Canungra school rode their horses to school.

A corner of the school grounds was fenced off and the saddles were usually left against a tree.

In wet weather they were put under the school building.

If there was a storm brewing, those with horses were sent home early.

We set off but as we went south up Canungra Creek and the storms usually came from the south west, my sister and I often got soaked!

Before school transport was introduced, children who were more isolated received weekly lessons by mail from the Correspond-

ence School in Brisbane.

‘Mum’ became the home teacher and some of the papers were returned for correction and comment.

The Planning Process I am often asked by residents how the planning process works and I will try to explain it in the limited space available.

When a Development Application is lodged with Council, the planning team have the role to assess the application under framework set out in planning legislation by the Queensland Government which includes: State Planning involves the Planning Act 2016, State Planning Policy, Queensland Infrastructure Program, Priority Development Areas, Community Infrastructure Designations, State Assessment & Referral Agency (SARA) and Development Assessment

Rules.

Regional Planning which includes the South East Queensland Regional Plan 2017 ( Shaping SEQ) Local Planning includes Scenic Rim Regional Council Planning Scheme 2020 which is the statutory local planning document that provides local controls and planning provisions for development applications within our local government area.

Council must comply with the broader planning frameworks and legislative provisions. Development applications are generally either Code Assessable or Impact Assessable and only Impact Assessable applications are publicly advertised for public submission.

Following approval or refusal of an application the applicant and/or submitters have the right of appeal through the Queensland Planning and Environment Court.

Goat Track The Department of Transport and Main Roads officers took the local councillors onsite last week to view the damage and work to date.

The site remains very unstable and persistent rock falls require clearing to even expose the road site.

Work continues and the road is not expected to reopen until later in the year. DTMR have agreed to keep our local commu-

nities updated on a regular basis.

Canungra was not a winner this time, beaten by Agnes Waters but the staff at the Canungra Visitor Information Centre will be entering our beautiful town again next year having gained a wealth of experience on how best to lodge a winning entry.

This one was so poorly advertised I doubt there were many “smart” submissions, which have now closed. You didn’t miss much – 36 pages of motherhood statements.

Deputy Mayor Congratulations to Cr Enright upon being appointed to the position of Deputy Mayor, under contentious circumstances.

Given his appointment was a Mayoral nomination, seconded by Cr West, and in the absence of Cr Chalk who therefore did not get a vote,

the outcome was a forgone conclusion.

Cr Enright voted for himself. Crs Swanborough, McConnell and McInnes abstained from voting on the basis of a lack of procedural fairness.

Abstentions count as a vote against.

The Mayor had the casting vote.

Given that rotation annually through the role as Deputy Mayor is aimed at providing opportunities for Councillor personal development, presumably this will be Cr Enright’s only bite at this particular cherry.

Expect plenty of jockeying for position for the role for the 12 months leading up to the next election - always good to have your avid supporter in that role.

I was offering odds of 100,000 to one for Cr Swanborough but there were no takers!

Court Cases Involving SRRC: The number has increased to 12 current cases; new cases relate to appeals relating to Enforcement Notices.

Tamborine Mountain You will have all heard by now that Div 1 Councillor Derek Swanborough has financed his own household plebiscite to see if residents on the Mountain wish to move to the Gold Coast.

This vote is only one per household and not every resident.

This vote is non-binding and is not official, if the vote does come back with a majority ‘yes’ vote that does not mean that the Mountain will move.

There is a rigorous government process that will still need to be followed with community forums, information nights and another full vote by all Tamborine Mountain residents followed by Government approval or not. nicRim #OneSce

Biddadaba Creek Action Group It was great to meet up with this Group again last week who are passionate about preserving the environmental diversity in Biddadaba. Most of the group are local farmers who conduct weed clearing and management along the creek and other areas assisted by both State and local grants.

The group are also loud advocates for the improvement of roads.

If you are interested in joining this group, please contact George Massam on 0409 622 190.

When speaking with the Manager, I requested that the culvert at the intersection of Biddadaba Road and Beaudesert Nerang Road be inspected as some locals have suggested that it has sunk over the last few years.

I also requested that consideration be given to its urgent replacement to improve access during rain and storm events.

Inspecting work on the Goat Track. and over 13,000 tonnes a lot of restoration work of rock and rubble has to be completed, so not been removed off the opening any time soon, cliff face. There is still I’m afraid.

Council is seeking public comment on proposed corrections to a rural road numbering error affecting eight properties on Chinghee Creek and Mount Gipps Roads, Chinghee Creek, south of Beaudesert.

Council proposes to rename the incorrectly numbered portion of Mount Gipps Road to Chinghee Creek Road.

Further, Council proposes to relocate the existing Mount Gipps Road sign to a new location.

SPONGES AND ARTHRITIS As a Physiotherapist I like to be able to explain scientific facts in terms which are easy to understand so I often use analogies.

One of my favourite analogies is ‘sponges and arthritis’.

Just like a wet sponge our joint cartilage is mostly made up of water and relies on the movement of water in and out of it to keep it healthy.

Too little movement can allow a build up of dirty water in our cartilage and can cause degenerative changes.

Too much movement with inadequate rest or recovery can squeeze too much water out and also cause degeneration.

Just like a sponge which is too dry or too dirty is no good to anyone, joint cartilage that’s too dry or too

dirty is also not any good for anyone.

Regular movement and loading with sufficient rest and recovery is essential for good joint cartilage health.

The message to take from this is to listen to your body and make sensible choices regarding how much exercise to do or forces to place on your body when you have any amount of damage to your cartilage, be it in your knee, back or foot for example.

Ask your Physiotherapist to devise an appropriate exercise program to help you to protect your damaged cartilage at the same time as stimulating healing so that you are not suffering from further deterioration as you progress through life.

NATURE’S GEMS Birdwatching Around Chinchilla

By Melissa Whitby Recently, I decided to do a short birding trip out to Chinchilla. This was a trip back down memory lane as I have been bird watching in the area since I was ten years old.

After all the recent rain, the area was exceptionally green. The first morning out I was on the hunt for a parrot species known as Blue Bonnets.

Unfortunately, the Blue Bonnets did not show themselves but I was to encounter Budgerigars, which I had not seen in the area before.

Seeing wild ‘Budgies’ is always an amazing experience and I was surprised at how close I was able to get to them.

That morning, I also saw Striped Honeyeater, Yellow Thornbill, Zebra Finch, Nankeen Kestrel and many other species that I had encountered on other previous trips. My first day had started well.

My second day out was to be the day of finches.

Early that morning, I encountered Zebra and Double-barred Finches.

I also had nice views of Red-rumped Parrots and Yellow-rumped Thornbills.

All these birds I observed feeding on the

ground, which was quite a concern for me as I had seen several feral cats in the vicinity.

To my delight, I heard an unusual call and it turned out to be a Plum-headed Finch.

This is another bird that I had not seen in the area before but I know that my hosts had them come into their bird-friendly garden in previous times.

Later that day, my friends took me to a huge dam, which turned out to have a flock of several hundred Plum-headed Finches around it with some Chesnut-breasted Mannikins present as well.

The dam also provided sights of Black-necked Stork, White-breasted Seaeagle, Australian Pelican and many oth-

er waterbird species.

It was obvious that the Plum-headed Finches had bred very well which is a good sign as it is not often that I had seen them in such numbers. The Blue Bonnets were in the area as I had heard them but with no great views.

My third and final morning, I had amazing views of Cockatiels, White-winged Choughs, Brolgas and Red-winged Parrots. The photos that I had hoped to get of the Blue Bonnets were not to be but I am hoping to get some later in the year when I head back out to Chinchilla.

In a few short days, I had seen an amazing array of birds and it was very good to see bird species still in the same area after all these years.

Prickly Alyxia Hear us Roar!

By Susan Cully A shrub with bright orange fruit, a galaxy of star-shaped, beautifully fragrant flowers and impenetrably spiky leaves that provide protection for nesting birds ... what could be better in the garden?

This shrub, the Prickly Alyxia, is also known as Chain Fruit because the orange fruits are often arranged in end-toend clusters, or ‘chains’. It is also known as Native Holly and as Moonya.

This shrub grows along the Southwest Road in Beechmont, often under a strand of fencing wire, apparently having been delivered by a resting bird. It grows most commonly in rainforest margins from Wollongong to North Queensland and New Guinea.

It enjoys areas of high precipitation from sea level to 1200 metres and can be found as an understorey species in rainforest, monsoon forest and wet sclerophyll forest plant communities.

It is useful in regeneration plots and in gardens large and

It has been found growing in NSW on rocky cliffs subject to high winds and snow. In revegetation it is considered a useful replacement for Lantana.

In landscaping projects it will grow well under large trees. It is valuable despite being slow to establish and slow to mature.

Growing to five metres high and one metre wide, it fits into the small garden. It can be grown from fresh seed or from cuttings. Allow up to two years to germinate.

This author tried soaking very fresh seed in fresh chicken droppings and noted sprouts within two months during the warmth of summer.

The fruit may be poisonous, all parts of the plant exude milky latex when cut.

News from St Luke’s

It is with some sadness I write to say farewell to our faithful priest.

Father Ken Spreadborough has been St Luke’s locum priest since November 2019.

He has been a real blessing to our congregation and has devoted much time and energy to ensure St Luke’s continued to thrive, despite COVID and not having a permanent priest. Ken and his wife Betty have become our friends and we will officially farewell them on Sunday 27 June.

Fr Ken is returning to retirement and we thank him for all he has done.

Fortunately, we will welcome Fr Harry Reuss who is coming to be our locum priest. Fr Harry has been at St Margaret’s Nerang before being appointed to Canungra and Tamborine Mountain. Despite not having a permanent priest since mid-2019 we continue to feel blessed as we enjoy many activities and God’s presence among us. At our recent Guild meeting it was made clear we are financially stable and continue to move forward. The annual fund-raising dinner which was not held in 2020 will be back, being held later in August.

This is always a night of fun, food and entertainment. Little Lukies continues on Monday afternoons (term time) for our Primary school children and the end of month social gathering on the last Friday of each month enjoys not only the warmth of friendships but the warmth of a glowing fire, thanks to John King.

Wonglepong CWA in conjunction with St Luke’s is offering a cuppa, a bite to eat and a chance to have a chat. Everyone is welcome, on the second Wednesday of each month.

Yes, St Luke’s is achieving great things and you are welcome to join in some or all of these activities. You will not be sorry.

Hung Li (of Foodworks fame) has been nominated as Sportsperson of the Month by one of his fellow players in the Metro Men’s Soccer Team. They have noted a huge change in the quiet young lad who first came along to training , chatting only to one other initially, to an outgoing pivotal (and fast!!!) component of the mens team – recently scoring an amazing goal from well outside the box to give us a 1-0 lead in the first half over a Nerang team, which culminated in the whole team pulling out everything in the second half to maintain that score for a great win. He is a popular young man on and off field and on so many levels just a ‘top bloke’. Good on ya Hung and congratulations on a well deserved accolade

Cobi Gordon Cobi has been playing soccer since he was three years old, when he started out playing for Canungra Owls Soccer Club. Since then, his love and enthusiasm for the game has continued to grow and he now plays for a number or Soccer and Futsal Teams including Tamborine Mountain, Gold Coast United and Force Futsal Academy His commitment sees him travel all over the Brisbane and Gold Coast area for training every week as well as playing in competitions from Brisbane to Sydney and many places in between.

Earlier this year Cobi was selected to represent QLD City and travelled to Sydney to compete in

Cobi Gordon. the 2021 National Club Futsal Championship where unfortunately his team did not make the finals but was a great experience and achievement for him. He competes regularly in local competitions with his clubs and recently won the Gold Coast Futsal 10s Intertoto Cup with Force Futsal

Academy.

Cobi is a keen supporter of Southampton football club in the UK and aspires to play for them one day.

Aside from soccer Cobi enjoys many other sports and has represented his school many times, most recently at district cross country trials.

Moriarty Park News Well we hope everyone who attended the Food Trucks/Classic Cars and Bikes etc event on May 15th enjoyed themselves and a massive thank you to all who supported us very well in the process!

No final definite amount raised yet – which will go towards our new skate park project – but more than last time and all thanks to a fantastic community get together!

To the minority who opted to enjoy the event and not support it by bringing their own drinks, and sadly in glass bottles – to a field where we play sport regularly – that was disappointing, but ‘c’est la vie ‘ and all we can do is thank tremendously everyone else and hope next time they think better of it and help too.

The downstairs bar ran like a well oiled machine under the charge of Jo, Sharon and Bronwyn; Samuel and Toby conquered the COVID sign in table; Sarah, Peter and Kenny ran around restocking and ‘whatev-

er needed doing’.

Canungra Hotel were terrific with our drinks needs and returns and the wonderful Simpson family loaning us a mobile cold room just made everything soooooo much easier – and colder!

As our ute was attached to cold room I had no car to ‘do a pub run’ for extra supplies so big thank you to Hung from Foodworks who took me in his flash Mercedes and loaded her up with beer, bourbon and ice!

We still have some fine tuning but think we were better prepared this time around and appreciate all the positive feedback. There was a bit of damage to the fields but Jason Wilson from JW Earthmovers came to the rescue with sand , barra, roller … and graft – thanks mate !

Tennis The new tennis court Book A Court system is ‘live’ so get yer racquets out and have a game!

Lighting Thank you to SRRC for promptly responding to our request for more sensor lighting around the stairwell and exit door from hall with winter and dark nights approaching, and many user groups utilising the facility in the evenings. This was up in a flash (lol) and is greatly appreciated.

We are working with Council to have more lighting in the carpark without affecting adversely the occupants of houses on Monarch Drive, but they absolutely pulled out all the stops to get the first and most crucial lighting issues dealt with and we thank them.
