Cleaning Up Canungra
Getting ready to clean up our streets
A small band of volunteers gathered early in the morning at Monarch Drive for Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 1st March. Cr Virginia West organised the day, with volunteers concentrating on Monarch Drive, Manor Court, Coburg Road, Lions Park and Moriarty Park. “We concentrated on a small area so that it wasn’t too difficult with a small group of people,” said Virginia.
Virginia said it the area was surprisingly clean, particularly the skate park and play areas which have been harder areas to clean in the past. “It is good to see that people really are looking after these areas in town,” she said. Volunteers were provided with gloves and rubbish bags through the Clean Up Australia Day initiative. Rubbish collected included drink cans and bottles, confectionery wrappers, cigarette butts,

a hub cap and shopping trolley (which was returned to Canungra FoodWorks). 2015 is the 25th year of Clean Up Australia Day. An estimated 526,268 volunteers cleaned up 13,563 tonnes of rubbish at 6,165 clean up sites across Australia on 1st March. Canungra State School will hold a Clean Up Australia event on Sunday 8th March.

New Show Committee Calls for More Volunteers
The Canungra Show and Rodeo are set to be the town’s two biggest events with a blend of experience and fresh talent on the Committee, but they would welcome more volunteers. At the Society’s Annual General Meeting on 4th March, elected office bearers were: Airlie Worrall (President), Jason Ward (Vice President), Darrel Biss (Vice President), Chris Ward (Treasurer). The Committee are investigating making the Secretary’s role a paid position due to the workload and commitment involved. Canungra AH&I Society President, Airlie Worrall said she is hoping for two really good events this year. She would also like to see all volunteers to have fun organising the Show and Rodeo, with dinner meetings and social events planned for the Society. She also thanked outgoing President, David Wilson for stepping in last year after the Society struggled to find office bearers to form the Committee, putting the future of the Society in doubt.

Services Club to Continue Under Nerang RSL & Memorial Club
Canungra’s RSL Services Club will continue as a different entity after a motion to wind up the Club was approved at a meeting on Saturday 28th February. Nerang RSL & Memorial Club. received its final approval from the members bringing to an end the uncertainty surrounding the Canungra Club’s future. Members approved a motion to transfer the Canungra RSL Services Club’s assets to Nerang RSL & Memorial Club Inc who will operate the new Canungra Services Club, initially for a 10 year period. In a deal negotiated by the committee, Nerang is also paying the outstanding debts of the Canungra RSL Services Club. About 60 members attended the Special General Meeting voting unanimously for the asset transfer and wind-up of the old Club entity. The Canungra RSL Services Club has struggled financially over the past five years. In November 2013 a motion to wind up the Club was withdrawn after a
rescue package came from Nerang RSL & Memorial Club. However Canungra was not able to operate profitably and the Club closed briefly in November 2014, reopening after negotiations recommenced with Nerang. In a letter to Club members, the Nerang Secretary Manager Andrew McInnes described the change as the beginning of a long and positive association between the two Clubs. Memberships have already been rolled into the new Canungra Services Club.
Canungra RSL President Keith Cogzell welcomed the change saying the financial and managerial experience of Nerang RSL will lift the Club, expand member services and improve the customer experience. He thanked the committee for its persistence in finding a solution, the loyal staff who soldiered on in difficult times and the Club’s creditors for their patience and support during the eight months it took to finalise all approvals.

Want an Adventure? By Stephen Crook
Get fit and see France and Northern Spain! I am organising for my second time a trip to walk part of the Camino Frances in April 2016 (As seen in the movie ‘The Way’). The Camino is walked by thousands of people every year for many different reasons. Some walk for religion, some for the adventure and some to keep fit and lose weight. I am looking at taking a group of ten people to walk for ten days on the Camino Frances. The walk starts in St Jean Pied De Porte in France , crosses over the Pyranees into Northern Spain and finishes 780km at Santiago de Compostela (it takes about four weeks to complete the entire walk). The part of the trip I am organising will be to walk the first ten days. From there, you can either continue the walk individually, return home with me, or travel Europe at your leisure. As a Personal Trainer I will be there purely to guide and motivate you and get you- through the walk, however the journey is yours to take and you can walk at whatever pace you want as long
Walk the Camino Frances
Stephen Crook’s 2013 Camino Frances Walk Group in Spain
as we all arrive in the same town at the end of each day. I will be organising preparation walks leading up to the trip so that we are all well prepared. Each day will be different but the average day will consist of walking approximately 20km, give or take, from town to town through the beautiful Spring scenery of France and Spain.
The cost is approximately $3500 which includes my fees, return flights, transfers to the walk and back. If you are interested or want to find out more details then please call me on 0431 208 588. I will organise an information session for those interested if I get enough people.

Tamborine Village Lions News By Rayna Bond
On Saturday 31st January, Tamborine Village Lions undertook a BBQ at the Election Polling Booth in Tamborine Village. We ran a meat tray raffle and the lucky winner was Geoff Alcock. Thank you to all that supported us not only with the raffle but by buying our sausages. On Sunday 1st February we welcomed back all our stall holders to the first markets of the year. Meat tray raffles were won by 2 stallholders, Scherrie and Chrissy. Again we thank all that support our markets, both community and stallholders. Without either we would not be able to continue. Don’t forget we are back the first Sunday of every month from now on. On Saturday 14th March we will be holding an information night about the proposed ANZAC Centennial Memorial project. We would appreciate any discussion regarding the Cenotaph, in particular what it will look like and the preferred location. Any interested people are welcome to attend the evening which will be held at the Tamborine Memorial Hall, 2682 Waterford-Tamborine Road, Tamborine from 6.30pm. Come along and share your thoughts on this historic ANZAC memorial and ensure the ANZAC spirit lives on in Tamborine. For anyone interested in what Tamborine Village Lions do and who we support we are holding our first dinner meeting of the year on Thursday 26th February at the Bearded Dragon. For further information please contact 0487 770 114 or email tamborinevillagelions@live.com.
Community Information Flyer
The Lions Club of Tamborine Village is proposing to undertake an ANZAC Centennial memorial project with selection and installation of an ANZAC Cenotaph and suitable Car Park area within Tamborine Village Precinct. This vision, in the ANZAC Centennial year, is a significant project for Lions and is the largest undertaken by the Lions members, in association with Scenic Rim Regional Council and other important stakeholders. This community information flyer is provided to enable some discussion and consultation with members of the Tamborine Community. As such, the Lions Club proposes to hold an Information Night, to discuss initial plans and seek feedback on how and what the Cenotaph should look like and discuss the preferred location within the Tamborine Community precinct. The Lions Cenotaph project needs to recognise all 3 armed forces and the history of our local service men and women in the armed forces and the Lions seek your feedback on any history of our locals.
Please come along and share your thoughts on this historic ANZAC memorial and share in ensuring the ANZAC spirit lives on in Tamborine.
Venue: Tamborine Memorial Hall 2682 Waterford-Tamborine Rd, Tamborine. Date: Saturday 14th March 2013. Time: seated at 6-30pm, for a 7-00pm start Tea and Coffee provided.

Tale of Clancy @ The Overflow
With apologies to AB ‘Banjo’ Patterson I had written him a text Which I’d sent, hoping the next Time he came in mobile coverage He’d have time to say hello. But I’d heard he’d lost his iPhone, So I emailed him from my phone, Just addressed, on spec, as follows: clancy@theoverflow And the answer redirected Wasn’t quite what I’d expected And it wasn’t from the shearing mate Who’d answered once before. His ISP provider wrote it And verbatim I will quote it: ‘This account has been suspended: You won’t hear from him no more.’ In my wild erratic fancy Visions come to me of Clancy: Out of reach of mobile coverage Where the Western rivers flow. Instead of tapping on the small screen, He’d be camping by the tall green River gums a pleasure That the town folk never know. Well, the bush has friends to meet him But the rest of us can’t greet him: Out there, even Telstra’s network Doesn’t give you any bars. He can’t blog the vision splendid Of the sunlit plains extended Or tweet the wondrous glory Of the everlasting stars. I am sitting at the keyboard And I’m too stressed out to be bored As I answer all the emails By the deadlines they contain While my screen fills with promotions For ‘Viagra’ and strange potions And announcements of the million-dollar Prizes I can claim. But the looming deadlines haunt me And their harrying senders taunt me That they need response this evening For tomorrow is too late! But their texts, too quickly ended, Often can’t be comprehended For their writers have no time to think They have no time to wait. And I sometimes rather fancy That I’d like to trade with Clancy: Just set up an email bouncer Saying ‘Sorry, had to go.’ While he faced an inbox jamming Up with deadlines and with spamming As he signed off every message: clancy@theoverflow

Cathy and Shana Ride to Conquer Cancer
Local riders Cathy Cecil and Shana Geiger will take part in the 2015 Ride to Conquer Cancer on 15th and 16th August. Their team, Riders for Razzel is a cycling team that started out as a tribute to Rae “Razzel” Twidale. Rae was a long term resident of Canungra and Tamborine Mountain who passed away on 13th December 2010 after a long battle with leukemia (CLL). She was a much-loved Aunty to Shana and lifetime friend to Cathy so it was an honour for the girls to join the team. “Lets be honest, we are all seeing Cancer occur far too regularly in one form or another,” said Shana, “We all know somebody receiving treatment, awaiting results or have lost someone dear.” The Conquer Cancer ride is a 200km cycling journey throughout Queensland’s scenic countryside over two days with all funds raised going to critical cancer research at the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, one of the largest research institutes in Australia and across the southern hemisphere. Since 2011, funds raised by the Ride to Conquer Cancer have supported 66 new research projects, including a $2.7 million Flagship project which will bolster QIMR Berghofer’s groundbreaking work harnessing the power of the immune system to fight cancer.
Cathy Cecil and Shana Geiger
To qualify for the ride the girls need to not only to do a stack of training, they also need to raise $2,500 each to qualify. If you would like to help Shana and Cathy to reach their fundraising goal, go to: http://br15. conquercancer.org.au/site/TR/ Events/Brisbane2015?team_ id=13986&pg=team&fr_id=1180 or drop a donation into the fundraising tins at Foodworks or the Canungra Hotel.

Things to know about Solar Power and things to consider:
We provide free energy audits and free quotes.
• Government Rebates are still in place to reduce the initial cost of your Solar panel system. • Even though the 8 cent feed in tariff from energy providers is low, every kilowatt hour you get from the sun is FREE! • The days are now gone for new customers to receive 44 cents and 50 cents feed in tariffs and getting refunds from energy providers. But you can drastically reduce your power bill with a solar panel system by maximising your day time power usage and minimising your night time usage. Example: running pool pumps or bore pumps during the day using the solar power. • Do you have a business premises that generally operates during the day light hours? Solar is perfect for off setting your day time usage, as generally there would be next to no night usage. • If you currently have a solar panel system? Has your system been checked that its working to its full potential with no issues and have your panels been regularly cleaned to maximise efficiency ? • We recommend a system service at least every 12 months. • Have you got energy efficient lighting? LED lighting now provides bright lighting with low power consumption. • What type of hot water do you have? If it is electric is it on off peak? • Do you require a generator change over switch set up connected to your switch board? Ready to power your house in case of a black out?

Crime Stoppers Committee Takes In Canungra Community Fundraising for SIDS
A new division of Crime Stoppers has been established that includes Canungra. Crime Stoppers Queensland has launched a new Volunteer Area Committee covering the northern parts of the Gold Coast and southern parts of the Logan area in what is a rapidly expanding population corridor in Queensland. The move follows growing community support for increased community safety and crime reduction initiatives and the recent extensive Police enforcement activities. The existing large Gold Coast Committee will be divided up, split to engage more localised corporate and community support in the existing and new areas. Volunteer Area Committees help the state-wide organisation to reach local communities and encourage increased reporting of suspicious and criminal activity to the Crime Stoppers hotline 1800 333 000, website via www.crimestoppersqld.com.au or via the mobile App. New ‘Gold Coast North’ Committee Chairperson Roberta Cava encouraged residents in the new area to be alert against crime in order to help achieve an increase in community safety. “Crime Stoppers is a grass roots community volunteer organisation working directly with the public to help stop, solve and prevent crimes and protect our Queensland lifestyle. The program achieves outstanding results and we hope that a heightened focus on crime and reporting in the area, through our Volunteer group activities, will help continue efforts to protect our families and loved ones,” Ms Cava said. Potential local volunteers are invited to contact Ms Cava by sending an e-mail to cavaconsulting@ozemail.com.au if they wish to attend their initial meeting to be held on 16th March at 5:30 at the Upper Coomera Community Centre, 90 Reserve Road, Upper Coomera.
The Canungra and Tamborine communities were in shock after the passing of baby Riley, the son of a local family who are heartbroken by the loss. Riley passed away suddenly on Tuesday 24th February at his family day care home in Tamborine. The tragic death is believed to be caused by Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. The community has come together to raise funds for SIDS and Kids in honor of baby Riley. SIDS and Kids is dedicated to saving the lives of babies and children during pregnancy, birth, infancy and childhood and supporting bereaved families. Laura Quinn said there will be donation tins in Canungra and Tamborine during March. Larger donations can be made by contacting Laura on 0403 587 648.

Community Steps In
From My Window with Keer Moriarty, Editor
Contributing Sometimes you don’t realise what someone does until they aren’t able to do it. Ray Hickson has been a great contributor to The Canungra Times for many years. Not only does Ray send in rainfall figures for Wonglepong every month, she also compiles the news, results and photos for the Canungra Bowls Club. She does all this on a voluntary basis, because she sees a benefit to the community and to the Club. Unfortunately Ray had a fall recently and has needed some subsequent surgery. Even when recovering from surgery she asked her daughter to send the rainfall through! Ray operates in the way I’m sure she does everything else - quietly, calmly with so little fuss that many people probably don’t even realise she does it. Where I do everything with a maximum of panic and overreaction, Ray quietly sends an email a day or two before the deadline with results perfectly set out, photos captioned and photos. I know she does a lot more for the Bowls Club and that she and her husband, Peter have been driving forces in the Club. I try not to take the help and community contribution to the paper for granted and what Ray has done over the years is exceptional. Have a speedy recovery, Ray, and thank you, for everything.
Hi Keer, Recently, the Canungra Bowls Club participated in a massive clean up of their Club house in response to the graffiti on the exterior walls. It was an enormous effort from all our club members and the job could not have been successful without the help from Canungra’s community members and businesses. We would like to especially thank the Canungra Hardware store for supplying the paint at cost price to help revamp the club house. It was also noted that many members of the community approached the Canungra Bowls Club offering their assistance with the clean up. A big thank you goes out to all of you. As a club that has been part of this small town for over 60 years, we have relied heavily on community spirit and support. It never ceases to amaze me the comradery and generosity of our community. Thank you Canungra. The Bowls Club will continue to provide a welcoming club for families and its members. Cheers, Bronwyne Brown Secretary, Canungra Bowls Club

Trilogy Accounting Group is a CPA Practice
From St Luke’s Anglican Church
By Di Ayscough
It is that time of the year when many groups hold their Annual General Meetings and despite the thought of AGM’s being arduous, they are vital to put committees in place to lead the appropriate club or group for the forthcoming year. St Luke’s Guild had a pleasing attendance of people for their AGM with a light meal being served beforehand. Office Bearers for the coming year include Diane Ayscough as President, Anne King as Secretary and Sonya Gubbins as Treasurer. The support by the Guild members is always valued and positive. It was with some sadness, but mostly excitement we farewelled Sasha Gubbins who has moved to Brisbane to pursue her chosen University course. A special morning tea was held and we look forward to seeing Sasha on her visits home. St Luke’s Car Boot Sale will be held on Saturday 14th March, commencing at 7am. Apart from the stallholders, St Luke’s will also have a cake and homemade goodies stall, bric a brac and an Easter raffle. There will be a sausage sizzle and Devonshire Tea available so why not come along ready to find a bargain and enjoy some mouth watering scones or a barbequed sausage. Hot and cold drinks will also be on sale. Inside the Church will be a bookstall where you may find great reading and or that long lost book you have been looking for. If you would like to sell your wares on this exciting occasion please phone David on 5533 7070 to book a site, just $10. We plan to have a great day. I encourage you to be a part of that, and funds raised always go to maintain the church building. May you all enjoy many blessings.
Craig Roberts, Officer in Charge, Canungra Police Station A big thanks to those community members who responded to my last article relating to the damage and theft of property in Canungra last month. As a result of the information received we were able to positively identify the youths responsible and take action in accordance with the Juvenile Justice Act. I’d also like to acknowledge the mature way in which the parents of those responsible handled the situation. Finding the balance of looking out for and protecting your child, while ensuring they accept responsibility for mistakes and know there are consequences for their actions, can be difficult. While it’s easy for some parents to protect their child’s rights at all costs, this can set them up for failure down the track as these lessons are best learnt early before offending behaviour becomes the norm. There have been a number of break and enter offences reported over the last week. The offenders are again targeting acreage properties in the Tamborine, Witheren and Beechmont areas during day time hours. There are a number of things that you can do to make your property less attractive to would-be thieves. This can be as simple as closing and locking your gate, or the installation of CCTV or alarms, anything that would make entering your property more difficult or riskier proposition. The other thing we can all do is look out for our neighbours and report anything suspicious. We ask that if you see anything suspicious day or night, make a note of what details you can and contact us as soon as possible. We have received a number of reports hours, and in some cases, days after the suspicious vehicle or activity has occurred which can make it difficult to follow up. Can I also ask that prior to attempting to solve a crime via Facebook you contact us at the station with the information on one of the below numbers: • Canungra Police 5543 5120, • Police Link on 131 444 or • Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Well Being With Clancy Beck
The Problem Behind Weight Gain Have you ever done an 8 week or 12 week challenge, had amazing results, but then put the weight on again after the challenge had finished? Pretty frustrating isn’t it? Many people struggle with yo-yo weight loss and weight gain because they are doing what they think is the right thing - changing their eating habits and exercising a lot. They are of course the right things to do, but there is an important factor behind these things that is missing from the equation. Behind all our surface behaviours, are our unconscious thoughts and emotions. You can change temporarily by consciously changing your actions, i.e. following a strict eating plan or exercise program, but if you don’t address the underlying problem of WHY you put the weight on in the first place, then once you stop the program, it’s likely you head back to square one, and will resume the old patterns of eating, not exercising and the consequent weight gain. Being overweight is not the problem. WHY someone is overweight is the problem, and if that is not cleared then the weight will keep coming back. You could say the problem is simple, they just ate too much. But why did they eat too much? So as well as the healthy eating and fitness program, it’s vital to know how to change the ‘behind the scenes’ reason for the weight gain in the first place. As a weight loss coach I find some amazing stories running in people’s minds, but by using unconscious re-programming techniques, it’s not a hard process to help people shift their blocks around health. It all starts with becoming aware of the thoughts they think on a regular basis. Have a look in your own mind. What stories do you repeatedly tell yourself?

Get Hungry For Eat Local Week 2015
Scenic Rim farmers, producers, retailers and eateries are being encouraged sign up for the upcoming Eat Local Week and Winter Harvest Festival. Expressions of interest are now open for businesses or groups wishing to serve up a local event in conjunction with the annual celebration of the food and produce of the Scenic Rim. This year’s event will be held from 27 June to 5 July, with the Winter Harvest Festival signature event to be held in Aratula on Saturday 4 July. “Eat Local Week and the Winter Harvest Festival were a huge success in 2014 and have become an important fixture in the Scenic Rim calendar,” Mayor John Brent said. “Last year, participation exceeded 15,000 people across a calendar of 80 interconnected local events. This was more than double the level of visitation from 2013.” Cr Brent said Eat Local Week was an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the high quality food, wine and beverages produced locally in the Scenic Rim and to recognise the importance of agriculture to the region. “If you are a grower, producer, retailer, vineyard, brewery or any other business that grows, sells or uses local food products I would encourage you to get involved in Eat Local Week,” he said. “Throughout the week-long event, participants will indulge in the wide range of flavours and experiences on offer from fine dining, producer dinners, wine tasting, farm tours, bush tucker experiences and low-cost activities for kids, locals and visitors.” The Winter Harvest Festival signature event on the final Saturday of Eat Local Week is a chance for farmers, producers, locals and visitors to celebrate the Scenic Rim’s premium food and wine, and good old fashioned country hospitality. “Whether you’re a die-hard foodie and just looking for a great family outing during the school holidays, don’t miss your chance to immerse yourself in the flavours of the Scenic Rim during Eat Local Week 2015 and the Winter Harvest Festival,” Cr Brent said. Application forms are available online at www.scenicrim.qld.gov.au/eatlocal-week. To participate in both events please submit a separate application form for each event. Please ensure you submit application forms by 13th March. For further information please contact 5540 5314 for Eat Local Week enquiries or 5540 5263 for Winter Harvest Festival.

AWL Pets of the Month
Mojito is a sweet girl who is rather shy at the moment. She is only two years old and is a Border Collie - Kelpie cross who is very tolerant of other dogs and once relaxed loves to play. She would love to find a wonderful family who will be patient with her while she discovers herself and will be happiest rehomed with another furry friend, or to be allowed as an inside dog. She would make a wonderful inside companion as she is quiet and well mannered. Mojito is only $50 and is vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Gabby is an eight year old girl who would like a quiet household to spend her days. She would prefer to be inside the home with you where it is nice and safe. As an older cat, she enjoys the simple things in life and would like nothing more than to gaze out the window and keep your couch warm. Gabby will definitely let you know when its dinner time! At the moment there is no adoption fee for Gabby Von Bibra Motors is subsidising the cost of some animal adoptions to help the AWL find homes for their animals. She is still vaccinated, wormed and desexed. Please note that adoption fees are subject to change as they are currently subsidised through sponsorship by Von Bibra Motors. Check the web site or phone for updates. To meet Mojito, Gabby or any of the other animals available for adoption, visit the AWL Gold Coast Rehoming Centre.

AWL Pets Find Canungra Homes
Almost 200 Animal Welfare League animals found their forever homes in Canungra residences in 2014, with an array of pets and farm animals making their way to the Hinterland. AWL Communications Manager, Brooke Whitney, said she hopes many more will be adopted in Canungra and surrounding areas in 2015. The 191 animals adopted included a cow, sheep, goats, chickens, goats, a guinea pig as well as many cats, dogs, kittens and puppies. With the shelters currently at capacity, Animal Welfare League QLD has waived adoption fees on some cats over six months of age as they attempt to make space for another 200 cats waiting to find a home. Brooke said fee waived adoptions have been very successful in shelters overseas and she is looking forward to seeing families from all over the Gold Coast find a new furry friend. “Our Rehoming Centres are at capacity we have almost 100 cats available for adoption and there are another 247 cats behind the scenes being treated for illness, in foster homes and waiting for space in the adoption pens”. Kitten breeding season is in full force and while kittens are being adopted quickly the cats are overlooked. “AWLQ Rehoming Centres have 68 kittens available for adoption and more than 300 in foster care that will be available for adoption in coming weeks, it’s easy to see why such a campaign is needed to effectively rehome homeless cats as quickly as possible”, Ms Whitney says. Von Bibra has been a financial supporter of AWLQ for three years and will cover the adoption costs. The Autovillage is encouraging the community to adopt a cat that has been desexed, microchipped, vet checked and vaccinated. Canungra is in the enviable position of having rural and residential areas which means many of the animals which are traditionally harder to rehome have ended up with Canungra families. In particular, AWL farm animals as well as older animals and larger breeds of dogs. Canungra Times Editor, Keer Moriarty adopted an adult dog (fifteen years ago) and a cat (five years ago). “With an adult animal you know immediately what their behaviour is like,” she said. “In my case I’m not very good at training animals so adopting an adult dog who already had basic training and a cat that was house trained was great. There is also the knowledge that you gave an older animal a chance at a new life.”

Nature’s Gems
Travel Diary 2014 - South Africa By Melissa Whitby After an extraordinary three weeks in Madagascar, my travel companions and I parted company and headed for different locations. My destination was Johannesburg, South Africa. Here I would meet up with my very good friends, Mike and Jean Rex. With their help, I planned to embark on one last safari before flying home to Australia. This was to take place in the Pilanesberg National Park, less than two hours from Johannesburg. The Pilanesberg National Park is situated in a crater of an extinct volcano and shows an incredible array of rock formations that would capture the imagination of geologists worldwide. It is also home to the Big Five (Elephant, Lion, Buffalo, Leopard and Rhino) and over 300 bird species. As with all South African National Parks, an array of facilities is located within Pilanesberg. We stayed at the Kwa Maritane Bush Lodge which provided excellent services, luxurious accommodation and the best wildlifeviewing hide I have ever seen. I was in heaven. Over the next five days, we were to be blessed with some amazing wildlife sightings. Although this was my 4th trip to South Africa, I was privileged to see many new bird species, observe extraordinary behaviour that I had never seen before from elephants, hippos and rhinos and catch a glimpse of the elusive Klipspringer for the first time!
For anyone wondering what a Klipspringer is, it is a small antelope that is adapted to living in rocky environments. Another incredible sighting was spotting two cheetahs enjoying a mid-afternoon rest. Cheetahs are incredibly hard animals to observe and this was only my third sighting in all my trips to Africa. As mentioned, I had an amazing time bird watching in Pilanesberg.
Thankfully, my two South African travel hosts were as keen as I was to look at and photograph the birds that we saw. Overall, Pilanesberg National Park was an extraordinary wildlife haven and I would strongly recommend a visit to this amazing place. After ten magical days in South Africa, I boarded a flight home to Australia. My African wildlife odyssey was coming to end. I had experienced wildlife encounters that many people only dream about. However, my travels were not over just yet and once I set foot back in Australia, the next part of my journey was about to begin‌

DESIGN BRIEF & RESPONSE Derived from the formal Brief contained in the Service Agreement 1. bring a sense of Structure, Order and Organisation over the whole site through an imaginative layout 2. allow for all the different recreational, productive and functional activities in a unified way 3. to express the site as a unified whole, with sub-zones fitting the overall theme 4. to explore ‘Productive’ practicalities within an imaginative configuration i) extensive perennial and annual beds including herbs, medicinal and cosmetic in raised beds and on ground, and to propose both an easier method and functional configuration ii) augment existing fruit trees in a cordinated way iii) expand the chicken / egg production iv) integrated compost processing location 5. Entries to be strengthened 6. Passive recreation areas to be formalised 7.more shade and coordinated mass planting 8. create a diverse range of nooks for a diverity of ways to use use and enjoy the site 9. propose a configuration for both pedestrian and vehicular access, including on-site garage and workshop. 10. explore the potential for income producing accomodation options with private courtyards
CONCEPT SKETCH
SITE FUNCTION
Radial zoning derived from the site analysis centred on the core of the site, the mid point betwen the house and the upper terrace area. From this point both functional and aesthetic
Activity zones that harmonised both the appearence and functionality of the whole site., as well providing a basis for Staged works depending on priorities
ZONES LIVING: Primary living area outside with Pavilion, higher viewing area and access to all areas further out into the yard OPEN SPACE: Central ordering and Recreational space from which all main aspects of the yard are accessible SERVICE: Carparking or garage space with frequently used elements from which the yard is accessible by vehicle. PRIVATE: Adjacent to the two main bedrooms looking east with potential access to individual private spaces. RAINFOREST: Existing vegetated space as Entry Feature and possible internal spaces. PRODUCTIVE: Planted Beds rfor annuals and perrenials with full exposure to sun PRODUCTIVE: Tree and Orchard crops grouped. Fenced with chook access all round. WORKSHOP: and storage area with access through to the Open Space area. Alternate hangout. VERGE AREA: Maintenance and Visitor Parking
OPTIONS

Option 2
MASS PLANTING
The Options show three alternate Layouts which integrate the Design Brief with the existing site conditions in a designed manner expressed through both the Concept Sketch and Function drawings. i) Option 1 organically irregular broad curves defining the main spaces establish a structured order over the whole site, whilst providing an informal feeling.

ii) Option 2 a more formal geomentric definition to all the main spatial zones imparts a more visually structured order and flow through the whole site with a crisper delineation between the different areas. A greater sense of unity of the whole site , this option would also experineced as far more informal on te ground iii) Option 3 pure rectilinear formality provides the most obvious and striking sense of visual structure and order. The scale of the site and the configuration of the sub--spaces still allows extended views ‘through spaces maintaning a ’big site feel’ within a more manageable layout. Each Option allows for maximised opportunities to include all the desired elements in a unified manner over the whole site The difference zones are structurally acheived by a broadly precise setout, attention to level ground planes, and the degree of edge definition. (eg: aim for pads with gradients of max1:50 falls. The configurations shown will require max 400cut and a similar fill in some locations only)

Canungra State School’s much loved Principal, Colleen Murphy, will retire this year after over 20 years of service to Canungra State School, 18 years as Principal. Mrs Murphy’s retirement was announced in the school newsletter on Wednesday 4th March. In a letter to the school community, Colleen said, “It has been a privilege to be principal of this fantastic school and I can’t thank you enough for your support during the 18 years I spent in this role.” “Students, you have always been the light of my professional life, thank you. Be happy, healthy and keep learning.” “The staff of this school are an amazing group and I will be forever grateful to you for working so hard for our students and for me.” Colleen has been an integral part of the Canungra community for many years. In addition to her role as Principal of Canungra State School, Colleen and David have assisted with the Moriarty Park Discos and with many other community events. Colleen is well known as a Principal who takes her job very seriously, often working long hours before and after school. Her dedication to the students is obvious. The Sun is in Pisces, tending towards calmness. Venus and Mars are in Aries, tending towards creative mayhem. The clash between the desire to do absolutely nothing and the desire to get into gear, will consume your attention. You will eventually move towards romantic adventure.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)
Mercury will start by inspiring you to social action. Then he will take you into a lake of emotion; the kind that always arises when idealism hits reality. At some point he will then decide that being becalmed has its limitations and will roar back into gear. Be prepared to learn through doing.

You have Venus and Mars together as guests this month. If there’s not some action on the relationship front, that would be amazing. What kind of action, is a mystery. Venus will be hell-bent on delight. Mars will be going hell-for-leather for adventure. Do yourself proud.

ARIES (Mar 21 – Apr 20)
CANCER (June 22 – July 22)
There’s not much earthiness and pragmatism in the air at the moment. You are one of the one’s who is going to have to identify this fact and do something about it. Heat and passion doesn’t always head in creative directions. Fantasy also doesn’t often get traction. Put things in order.
LEO (July 23 – Aug 22)
The Sun is in Pisces. Cats are not fond of large expanses of water. In this moment, you could easily mistake having to be patient with floundering. Be patient, creatively. Don’t let having to wait turn you into a puddle of lethargy. Wait as if you are expecting a call from your beloved.

Though you will eventually find the kind of natural order that makes you feel comfortable and safe, it will take some time and quite a few adventures, to get there. No perfect, imposed order, is going to work in any way. You will have to entertain chaos before balance presents itself.
LIBRA (Sept 23 – Oct 23)
Though in the long term, life is heading in your direction, the direction of peace, in the short term it’s all looking anything but. There’s a lot of action in Aries, making impulse king. There’s a lot of action in Pisces, inspiring all sorts of nebulous longing. You will have to be patient.
SCORPIO (Oct 24 – Nov 21)
With barrel-loads of fire going off in the astrological sky, and barrel-loads of water too, this could be a confusing time – but for you. You are the one to translate these contradictory influences, into understandable and digestible terms. Offer a hand to those who are wondering what’s up. SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 – Dec 21) Though there’s the promise of passion in the air, Jupiter is going retrograde, and there’s a heap of planets in Pisces, which serves to stop that passion in its tracks. Introspection will serve you better than any heroic attempts at action. Display the understanding required in contrary times.

This is a good time to identify the friends who have held true, as a variety of big changes have rolled through your world. Your friends are a tangible reminder that you are perfectly wonderful, just the way you are. If you can get that, then real change will come. Be wildly generous.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 – Feb 18)
The window of opportunity is narrow. Before long, you will be in the lived experience of your wishes coming true. The days for honing those wishes and making sure they are all constructive, creative and positive, are few. Passion, action, emotion and longing, are ready to sweep you up.
PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar 20)
Coburg Road crossing flooded on 23rd January 2015
The Sun will be in Pisces for most of this month. This will give you the self-respect and awareness required, to deal with the fact that there are many tricks and changes, surfacing all around you. Life is in a process of birthing the new. Birth is as tumultuous as it is miraculous.

Hinterland Celtics Rugby Football Union Club members after their Beaudesert Country Cup win 2014
Rugby Union Club at Home on the Mountain
Founded in 2007, the Hinterland Celtics Rugby Football Union Club have reached the final series in every year except one, playing in the Gold Coast Rugby 3rd Grade competition. Up until 2015 the Club has not had a home ground and have relied upon player subs, sponsorship of associated members and fundraising to run the Club. They now call Tamborine Mountain home and are seeking local players. In 2013 the Club raised and donated over $7000 to the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia through meat raffles at their Sponsors Pub (100% of proceeds were donated). The Club is a part of a wider sports club called ‘Celtic Sports’ and founded on the principals of mates helping mates. Their motto is Neart Tri Iobair translated to Honour through Sacrifice. The Club is looking for new players for 2015 with their first game being held on Saturday 7th March. Their first home game is Saturday 14th March. Club President, Carl Snowling said, “With us now having a home ground at Mt Tamborine we are very excited about what the future holds for the club’s growth and believe it is a golden opportunity for players and potential sponsors to get on board now.” For enquiries about the Club visit www.celticsports.com.au or phone Carl on 0488 052 500.
Canungra Owls Soccer News
By Bren Dalby
Sign on is well under way and a massive thanks to Rachel and Greg Mathers who are orchestrating all areas magnificently! I hope for soccer’s sake Greg doesn’t get posted anywhere else! Please register interest if you are thinking of playing soccer this year as teams are to be nominated very soon and the season starts in three weeks. It is an awful feeling when about 10 people say to me: “ we were waiting to see if there was a team first” when if they had all registered, at no financial commitment, they would have had a team!! We have had a number of coaches come forward but always need more and will run a Grass Roots basic coaching course soon which we would like all coaches and all prospective coaches to take part in; it’s a lot of fun and very useful. Looks like a great year of soccer in store for us and I am looking forward to season start ! Go the Owls! Page 34

Get Fit, Get Flexible - Taekwondo In Canungra
Canungra is home to one of the longest running Taekwondo Clubs in Queensland, operating at the Canungra School of Arts Hall for 25 years. Master Instructor John Callegari is one of the highest ranking black belts in Queensland and the Master Instructor of the Australian Freestyle TKD Academy. He is fully certified by the Australian government and internationally recognised by the world Taekwondo Federation in Korea. John’s classes are structured to cater for the individual and are suitable for men, women and children. Every lesson is different so students don’t get bored. John says Taekwondo instills discipline and respect, and his classes also specialise in fitness, flexibility, self defence and the opportunity to achieve a fully certified Black Belt. “Most importantly we encourage students to have fun while they are learning, so they will be keen to keep on training”, said John. The club welcomes new beginners and if you mention the Canungra Times, you can have the first lesson free! Classes are held at the Canungra School of Arts Hall on Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm to 7pm, enquires to John Callegari on 0418 210 880.

On Friday 13th February, the FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Awards were held at Moriarty Park with a light supper provided by the award sponsors from FoodWorks - Tony, Anne and David. The event was well attended and I would like to thank everyone who partook in the raffle to raise funds for Wildlife - we raised $121. An impressive crew of monthly nominees made the judging especially hard; we have an unbelievable array of sports sensationally represented by our local youth ... and those not quite so youthful also; Sheila Mills is a marvellous lady (and a pretty hot golfer too) and is cruising through her nineties!!! Inspirational indeed! She also brought along an entertaining entourage (dubbed “the naughty table” before the evening had really begun!) who fairly well cleaned up the raffle table! This event is sponsored in entirety by FoodWorks Canungra and all monthly nominees receive a $50 Foodworks voucher, a $50 Sporty’s Warehouse voucher and a medallion. Thankyou to Canungra Owls Under 12 team coached by Leanne Collins who kindly donated their vouchers back to the soccer club. Thank you very much to Amanda Thorogood for being the MC for the evening. Amanda also helped with several nomination sourcing adventures throughout the year. Thanks must go also to Robyn Lee for being our photographer extraordinaire on the evening! If anyone reading is interested in helping the Moriarty Park Committee organise next year’s Sportsperson Awards, please call Bren on 0414 435 919 or come along to a Moriarty Park meeting on the third Tuesday of the month at Moriarty Park at 7pm. Until further notice however any super athlete nominations can go to Bren at bren.dalby@bigpond.com.

AWARD WINNERS!
By Bren Dalby
Achiever of the Year
The extremely talented and versatile Nicholas Larson was awarded the FoodWorks Achiever of the Year Award. Nicholas was already an award winning rugby and basketball player when he developed an interest in Athletics in the last couple of years and excelled there too. Nicholas has competed at State level where he won the 400m, was sixth in the 200m and seventh in Triple Jump. Nicholas has recently competed in New Zealand, having been selected by Queensland Little Athletics to attend. Nicholas has his sights set on the National Athletics Championships in Sydney this year. We wish him all the very best and a huge congratulations on his achievements so far.
Sportsperson of the Year
Joshua Torrens won our FoodWorks Sportsperson of the Year Award with a unanimous decision from the judging panel. Josh won The Australian Muay Thai Junior Champion title for his age and weight group in January 2014 and earned the opportunity to travel to Malaysia to fight for the World Junior Championship. Josh proudly came home with a Silver medal! In December 2014 Josh defended his title at the Australian Championships and came home with Gold once again. This means this amazing young man is off to Thailand this August to challenge for the World title in the home town of his art, Muay Thai. Throughout the year Josh has also competed in the Siam Cup, a Junior competition often held in Canungra so keep your eyes open for that one and come along and support our terrific group of Muay Thai fighters. Josh was awarded the Siam Cup, therefore giving him the opportunity to fight for the Siam Belt, a prestigious award indeed. To top Josh’s year off he was recently presented, by his trainer, the ‘Hammer’s Outstanding Achievers Award’. This is a young man we will hear much more about, I am sure. A deserved local award to add to his expanding collection! Good luck with your endeavours Josh and congratulations on your achievements to date.
